This's been on my mind for awhile and i just wanted to know if im the only one: im both a hard and soft stan for all the bangtan boys but I just can't read any y/n x hobi kind of fics cause it feels weird?? Like I thirst over him (im not saying i dont think he's sexy, handsome or anything, cause he is!!) but it doesnt go so far from that. i cant picture myself dating or *being intimate* with him the way i do with the others..but why?? Maybe its the image he transmits?Wanted to hear your thoughts

as a general note first. it could be any member that a fan might feel more platonic about: simply a matter of character, looks, perceived connection. as you say, it might be that he sends out something else to you. that being said —there are two components to talk about here.

I. ON HOSEOK WRITERS

you’re very right about how sometimes, there’s a strong lateral portrayal going on if an idol fits a particular stereotype. you might be able to picture yourself in a scenario with a member, but it’s not something that’s written in the fandom. maybe because authors didn’t think about it. or maybe it’s unpopular. or not agreed on. several reasons can coincide.

fact is, image can for sure steer the way x reader fics are made. a lot of stage, photoshoot, and MV moments inspire many writers. you do have to say that it’s not all there is though. there’s a portion that gets ideas from backstage anecdotes. and a third fraction comes up with something on their own. a fourth wildly mixes everything. a fifth portion has someone else in mind but writes person XYZ instead. a sixth uses a mainstream porn or twt/tiktok trend as the basis of the character (... uncomfortable). a seventh author uses their life experience. another author replicates a popular book/movie. and so on.

hobi x reader writers have good reasons to get the first of inspo from his performance work where he shines. he’s the most stage-savvy member after all. they might get stuck there and not go any further because there’s already a lot to say about him going all out there. you might feel a way different atraction if someone wrote about a more private hoseok, or not, who knows? if there was some material about that. it’d be interesting to see how it plays out. advocating for some domestic hobi right here 😄

II. ON J-HOPE AND THE FANDOM

another fandom dynamic and bighit strategy that contributes to the effect. i always get the feeling he’s shown to us or shows himself in a more restricted, media-conscious type of way. more professional, less transparent. he’s not yoongi baring his most hidden concerns all day. he’s more sleek, not a target sphere of vulnerability or directness.

it’s not about privacy, but opinion: we know his family and hobbies and personality, but seemingly not the innermost hoseok. he’s the member that projects the most out but nobody can venture in. extroversion is a better shield than most people think. even if he says something very intimate, or raps about it, he keeps his smile on, and it takes the attention away. namjoon lets us gaze into his mind and strikes that tone, hoseok remains more elusive. his role in the team fortifies that, he doesn’t have to do the concept work that RM/suga do as producers.

a fanfic plot needs some degree of that innermost being in any kind of portrayal to really get to a reader. jimin is so desired as a date by many because he carries a lot of things about him on his sleeve. someone who decides not to do that will leave people guessing and unsure. it’s not always the looks: the idol who’s the least blank slate in a group is often the most beloved.

they’re easier to picture as your counterpart, an emotional bridge is easier to build. again then — some advocating here: doesn’t his professionalism make hobi even sexier? i find that mature and reasonable of him. you can imagine how seriously he’d take a relationship, and he can separate between his different worlds very well. hobi treats being an idol like an idol.

the prevailing problem is. hobi’s already shown in body focus, that he’s the dance headquarters of bts doesn’t help, and fans can only pick that up, or spin a 2D narrative of him. it’s been discussed often that hoseok handles stardom and self-reveal with more distance, he chooses to protect himself more than the rest. so what i think is that you have problems going past superficial thirst because

a) hobi hardly shows himself past his performer self by choice

b) the company promotes him that way

c) the fandom can’t go deeper than that either, on what basis. so, his stage presence and thirst potential becomes overhyped instead.

which is a testament to his talent but also a tale on how you can fetishize someone: as is often pointed out when people only look at hoseok based on how he can grind his hips in choreography omitting everything else about him. it’s because there’s no going further and deeper from either side. it’s agreed upon and part of the game, but it’s also sad that hoseok uses that blank slate to stay safe, or whatever reason is behind it. it’s business right there.

honestly, it IS a strong kind of strategy to prevail and keep your grind. a lot of idols could benefit from having even a tinge of hoseok’s approach to fame. if he becomes less in reach that way but he rather enjoys him image and fans go along and he’s okay with that, it’s something to deal with in a manner of, hey we see the actual point of it.

he doesn’t have to feel reachable or as vulnerable as other members opt to be, and the idea of hoseok is that he’s the sun in the first place. it does you good but getting so close isn’t the purpose 😉 some people are more meant to shine from way above. you see how namjoon is the moon man, much nearer to earth, revealing itself up close. you get the analogy, and we get back to the first paragraph like this, it always comes down to character after all.

Thomas groaned, stretching his aching back. He had spent the morning bent over a pile of books, sorting out the ones he knew, writing summaries for the card index afterwards, handwritten of course. The few typewriters they had were needed elsewhere in the camp. In the headquarter and in the school mostly. But the library was on the waiting list for one of the next typewriters Carson was about to fix.

Kasey looked up from her own pile of books, taking off her reading-glasses, rubbing her eyes. "Lunch break?" she asked him.

"That's music to my ears, boss." Thomas said with a big smile. He got up from his chair and started searching through his backpack, fishing out a lunch bag, presenting it to Kasey like a precious gift.

"What's that?" she eyed the paper bag curiously making sniffing noises. "Do I scent food?"

"Yeah." Thomas laughed, waving it in front of her nose

Normally they went to the canteen for lunch, meeting up with their friends, but Thomas desperately wanted to spend more time alone with her when they were not working. So today he had paid Frypan a visit early in the morning before work, convincing him to draw up kind of a menu for him and Kasey. He unpacked the bag, placing it's contents on Kasey's desk, commenting on each piece mimicking a posh waiter, giving Kasey sweet little smiles and winks which made her laugh.

"For starters our chef has created a delicious tomato salad with sweet onions and fresh herbs and as the main dish I proudly present the 'Frypan deluxe', a luxurious sandwich with grilled vegetables and chicken."

"Wow, that looks heavenly, Tommy." She was all smiles and seeing her so happy meant everything to him.

"That's not all. If you're a good girl, I may even have a little dessert for you." he said, presenting her a bowl with fresh fruits. He smirked, his facial expression flirtatious now.

"Oh, I'll be a little angel, Daddy." she said with a wicked, sexy smile. Thomas raised an eyebrow, giving her a surprised look. She saw his tongue move around in his closed mouth before a mischievous grin appeared on his handsome face. It was incredibly hot.

Kasey swallowed hard. The words had left her mouth without thinking and his reaction was giving her feelings she shouldn't have, her body reacting in an indecent way. Her pussy was throbbing at the thought of Thomas praising her for being his good little angel. She had promised herself to keep things between her and Thomas strictly professional and friendly. But her subconscious mind obviously tried to manipulate her.

"So let's eat, huh?" he said, licking his lips still grinning.

"Yeah." Kasey replied blushing, grabbing the little box with the salad and the fork Thomas was handing her over.

Interesting, Thomas thought looking at her without another word. Very interesting. The sexual connotation of her words were both - a surprise and a progress. Over the last weeks he had flirted with her a lot and she had flirted back, but always in a way that was more funny than sexy, casual - a harmless flirt between friends. But never like this, there had always been a line she obviously wasn't willing to cross, the line that seperated an innocent flirt from a sexy one. The line that divided friends from lovers, friendship from love, a platonic relationship from sex. He couldn't help but wonder if she was finally beginning to see him in a different light.

They sat there, enjoying their meal in silence until it started to grow uncomfortable. Kasey was the one to break it.

"So...did you choose some books you wanna read?" she asked. They had sorted the books through, dividing them into different categories: A was books Kasey already knew, B was books Thomas already knew, C was books neither of them knew. As expected pile B was the smallest and Pile C the biggest. They had decided to read books from pile C in their spare time to increase piles A and B.

"Yeah." Thomas said, turning around, grabbing a few books he had laid aside."I picked these." He gave her the books and she looked them through.

"Kafka! That's a fantastic choice!" He took the book from her hands. "The Metamorphosis...you already know that? Then it must have been on the wrong pile."

"Yes, I know it but you should read it anyway. It's great."

"What is it about?"

"Well...the first sentence actually says it all. 'As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect..."What has happened to me?" he thought. It was no dream'."

"Wow, you know that by heart?" Thomas was impressed.

"Only the beginning, because I love it so much." Kasey laughed, starting to relax again. Books were her safe space, far away from flirting and sexy thoughts.

"So the guy wakes up and is a bug or something?"

"Exactly. And he and his family have to deal with it. It's basically a story of an alienation, of loneliness, despair, family issues and losing control. At least in my humble opinion."

"Wow...that sounds depressing."

"It is, in a way. But it's also very touching and intense. You should give it a try."

"I will." Thomas nodded with a smile.

"I'm surprised you've never heard of it. As a booklover, I mean." The look she gave him was challenging.

"Yeah…" Thomas cleared his throat, smiling sheepishly.

"But you know Kafka?"

"Sure."

"Which books?"

"What?"

"Which books by Kafka do you know?"

"Umm...I can't remember the title…"

Kasey raised an eyebrow.

"The Sword? Do you know that?"

"Yes! That's it. Loved it." Thomas said, all smiles.

"Really?"

"Yes. Really…"

"You recommend it?"

"Absolutely."

Kasey started grinning.

"Then I have to read it. Did you read it here? Is it in your pile?" She got up and walked over to Thomas' desk.

"Ummm..no...I read it years ago...somewhere…"

"Oh...what a pity."

Kasey made a sad face but her grin was still shining through.

"Maybe it's somewhere in the unopened boxes. You should look for it and put it on my pile. I mean..you must know the cover."

She burst out laughing, not longer able to stay serious.

"There is no such book, huh?" Thomas rolled his eyes with another sheepish grin.

"No, Mr. Booklover." she sobbed, crying from laughter now. "I'm sorry, Timber, but it was too tempting to test you a little."

"Obviously." he joined in laughing, like he hadn't laughed for the longest time.

"So you admit it? You're not a real bookworm?" Kasey giggled.

"Well...I may have exaggerated a bit when I said I like books."

"You said you love books."

"I did?"

"Yes you did. And I said 'really?' and you said 'absolutely!' as far as I remember." A big smile played on her pretty lips. Kasey seemed to have a lot of fun, roasting him.

"Okay. I exaggerated a lot." Thomas couldn't help but burst out again and Kasey joined in, holding her belly that hurt from laughing.

"So why did you volunteer for the job in the first place?"

She asked after they both had calmed down. Looking at him curiously she took a big bite of her 'Frypan Deluxe'.

"Well, it was completely spontaneous. It sounded fun and you are a lot prettier than Gally." He gave her one of his irresistible smiles.

"That's what it's all about for you in life, huh? Good looks and fun?" She sounded very serious all of the sudden.

"Umm...no…of course not." Thomas was pretty irritated by the sudden change in tone and atmosphere.

"I volunteered because your enthusiasm was somehow infectious. I really wanted to work here. With you." He looked her deep in the eyes getting a little closer. "And not only because you're beautiful."

She held his gaze for a short moment before leaning back and lowering her eyes on the last crumbs of her sandwich. "I see." she tried a smile. "Well, thanks, I guess."

Thomas took a deep breath, relieved that she seemed to relax again but still confused.

"So what about dessert now?" he asked to ease the tension.

"Bring it on!" Kasey said, not feeling the good mood she was trying to fake.

I know life can be rough and gets you down but don’t let it keep ya there ok? You are a precious being that the universe spent thousands of years planning for. You are here and if you remain you will find your starlight again, even if it all seems dark right now.

Point is you don’t gotta do it alone so here’s Nims abc’s of self-care, self-love, and respect !!

A: Attend. Attend those events you wanted; the ones you’ve been looking forward to. You might be nervous but if you don’t go and give it a try you’ll never know! We’ll all be here for you whether you go off to do something or not; trust that your writing partners don’t mind the wait at all !!

B: Believe. Believe that it’s ok to have hope in things; have faith that it’s alright to be vulnerable. The right people will accept you as you are--but you won’t find them if you aren’t willing to try. Shutting down and mistrusting everyone won’t get you anywhere darlin; the bravest thing you can do is keep going.

C: Cuddle. Cuddle your blankets, your pet, your stuffies, your friends, your partners--have a cuddle buddy. Human touch might not be a full option for you right now but hold something close to your chest and enjoy the feeling of something you value being pressed into your treasured form.

D: Drink. Drink water! I know it might not be the most interesting or fun but your body really needs it. If you find that water by itself doesn’t work, mix it 50/50 with a thick juice. Staying hydrated is the best way to keep yourself feeling up to snuff!

E: Empathize. Empathize with yourself. Yes everyone else is important too; it’s ok to try and put yourself in other peoples shoes but look at yourself with the same understanding. You’ve had your own share of troubles and challenges that tested your well--everything. You’re doing amazing with the tools you’ve been given--don’t forget that. Have a little grace for yourself yeah?

F: Food. Food also will help empower your brain and your body to be the best it can be. You might not always be able to handle a lot, if anything, but try. If you need eat something light like toast or keep snacks around that you can munch on; just keep a little something in your stomach when you can!

G: Garbage. Garbage isn’t really very hygienic and sometimes when you’re depressed you have a hard time picking up after yourself. I get it! But if you leave your space full of trash you’ll feel like trash...and that’s just no good! Take some time to gather it all up and throw it away so your environment can feel cleaner !!

H: Hear. Hear what others say because you are only human and it is alright to make mistakes; you are hardly expected to be perfect. It’s alright to have slipped up--let them speak, apologize, grow. There’s no need to bring yourself down for it, others only speak up to help you learn. Not only that but hear their opinions and their stories; keep an open mind to things you learn in case it is wrong.

I: Inspiration. Inspiration is your best friend. It doesn’t matter what that is...if something helps bring out your creative side, let it shine! You don’t need to hide the things that feed into your hobbies and your plans; they are wonderful and you should treasure them.

J: Justified. Justified to be unapologetically you. Justified to have feelings and want to feel them. You are not less for not always being able to react or behave in the way the world expects you to; you are unique after all and it’s ok to be that way. You don’t owe anyone anything.

K: Karma. Karma is your ally and your friend. You do not need to seek vengeance, justice, or retribution for those who wronged you--their time will come. Focus on being better; focus on being the person they said you couldn’t be. Prove them wrong and let karma worry about the punishments for their bullshit--you just focus on being the royalty you are.

L: Laundry. Laundry is rough because you have to wash it, dry it, then fold and put it away. how can you make it fun? Can you put on music and jam out? Maybe there’s a game you can play while waiting between loads. Watch a movie and/or tv show while you do it (especially folding)! No one said it had to be boring, you can and should make it enjoyable! Maybe start with clothes you think you’ll need for the week (underwear, work clothes, etc) so what you need gets done first; take the rest a little at a time. Sometimes if you’re behind just doing one load a day helps wittle it down without it being overwhelming.

M: Memory. Memories are invaluable and you shouldn’t fear or be ashamed of any of them. If your memory is embarrassing, learn from it--or maybe it’s the other people in it that should feel embarrassed !! Your memories are who make you you and it would be a shame to not be yourself. Hold onto your past, keep it like a photobook in your life so when you need them most--you can look back on them and hold your head high.

N: Notice. Notice the actions of others. Compare how people treat you to how the people you encourage in others lives treat each other. If someone did the things they do to you to one of your friends, would you encourage them to stay in contact? Or would you tell your friend to get the hell out? Sometimes we accept less than we deserve and tell others to expect more--but you deserve just as much respect as they do. You are not less for being you.

O: Open. Open up about your past when you feel you can trust someone; to your counselor or the parent figure in your life. Open your heart to the possibility of change. I know it’s scary and you feel like a burden but the more open you are, the stronger your lasting relationships will be. Communication is key!

P: Plan. Planning is no ones favorite thing and yeah you know sometimes they change, but it’s ok to have a course charted out. Sure life might tell you that your plans need to change and throw you in a way you didn’t expect--but no one said plans had to be set in stone! Just like the outline for your paper--a plan is an outline for your life, not the whole thing. You’ll get where your going one way or another--just set yourself on the right course and the rest of it will work out.

Q: Quiet. Quiet is so demonized because as humans we are used to being surrounded by noise and sometimes your depression makes you afraid of silence. But then while being left alone with your own thoughts is hard it’s not bad if the quiet is by choice. Choose to go out for a walk, get out of town for a few days, expose yourself to the quiet of nature; a gentle white noise. Maybe a good book would be a nice change of pace; just the rustle of the world and pages. It’s ok to revel in the silence--however you do it. Quiet is not always bad, it’s ok to seek it out.

R: Respect. Respect is earned not given--bullshit! Respect is given but can be taken away. You should always respect others as they should respect you! But if they abuse that respect? Oh hell nah honey you yank that shit away. Respect is given, but they have to keep earning it every day. You’ve earned that shit already, but that doesn’t mean other people have earned it from you. Don’t forget that !!

S: Shower. Shower because you need it. I hate them as much as the next person but a clean you feels a lot better inside, trust me. Have a clean set of clothes waiting for you so not only your skin--but your clothes feel clean. Or you know, just revel in the feeling of your own skin; I’m not here to judge. Plus you know hot water feels really good on sore muscles !!

T: Tea. Tea is my favorite thing in the world! Do you like it too? There’s so many options both herbal and non-herbal! I really like black tea with a spoonful of honey and some milk--but I really like my stress-reliever herbal tea. There’s nothing more soothing than holding a warm cup in your hands and just letting that heat soak into your bones--speaking of you probably have a cup waiting for you !! (could be coffee or cocoa too, we don’t bring that debate here!)

U: Undefined. Undefined is you, my dear. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how long you’ve been around--it’s never too late to figure things out; to change how you see yourself. My mother is 65 and going back to school--learning she is non-binary. You don’t need to figure it all out now; you don’t need to have all the answers or labels. You can keep changing, keep growing, keep redefining yourself--because the only person who gets to say who you are or who you aren’t--is you.

V: Victory. Victories are hard fought, no matter how small...and you should celebrate them !! Even if it’s just a little dance--celebrate it !! You wanna gush about this seemingly insignifigant thing? Hell yeah, do it !! Did you get out of bed this morning? Victory !! Did you brush your teeth? Victory !! Did you say something positive about yourself instead of using self-degrading language? VICTORY !!

W: Wish. Wishing on stars was something you heard about a lot as kids--well it’s ok to still do it !! Who said you had to stop wishing on stars? Who said you were too old? It’s ok to have dreams !! It’s ok to have child-like wonder and ideas. You don’t have to be bored and cynical about the world just cause others say you do. If a kids hobby/show/book/etc makes you happy? Fuck how old you are, you can still enjoy the thing !!

X: x-pect. Expect that you should be treated well; that being with someone makes you feel at ease and at peace (yes I know I’m cheating with this one shhh). Who said that all the cheesy things you see about friendship and romances in movies can’t be true? Like yeah ok it isn’t always like that and there’s hard work that goes into it...but that doesn’t mean it can’t be true !! You don’t need to doubt someones sincerity just because it reminds you of fiction. Reality is what inspires fiction after all, is it not? It’s ok to have a life sound track and it’s ok for your relationships (platonic or otherwise) to feel larger than life !!

Y: Yell. Yell for joy, yell out of anger, yell just cause you want to. I don’t know who made you feel like you needed to be quiet all the time but that’s just not true !! I mean there are times to keep your voice low and times to be mindful of your volume, but it doesn’t have to be all the time. You can be loud !! It’s ok to be !! Sometimes it’s the only way you feel heard and sometimes you’re just so PUMPED that you gotta let the whole world know--so do it !! Be loud and be proud !!

Z: Zen. Be at peace with yourself, darling. I know that things are hard and sometimes you have to fight like hell to stay--but it’s gonna be ok. It doesn’t have to be ok yesterday, today, or even tomorrow. It can sting and you can let it weigh on you. You can take up space--you can ask for a shoulder to lean on--because there is so much space out there and that means there’s more than enough for you in the world, and here in my heart.

Remember that you are loved, that I love you and we’ll get through this together--one letter at a time !!

* i imagine there’s a support group of sorts on campus for mental health , & one of summer’s many secrets is her own crumbling mental health . she regularly attends group therapy & met your muse there , & after a few sessions , they became unlikely but very close & supportive friends . as a result , sum confides in them quite often , opening up to them completely , & does her best to be the shoulder they cry on as well .

* falling in like at a coffee shop ⤻ platonic , flirtationship .

* summer frequents a coffee shop near or on campus to not only soothe her unhealthy dependency on coffee , but for a little bit of solitude as it’s a hotspot for studying . she met your muse there after complimenting a song they were listening to in their airpods , & sparked something in your muse that has them starting to frequent the coffee shop a lot more often now hoping they’ll see summer . & maybe , just maybe , she chooses to sit by the window instead of in the back like she usually does , or gets in line behind them for a second bev when her first one is still half full to “stumble upon” them b/c she wants to see them just as badly .

* whether it’s stress from an exam , the frustration after seeing an ex post their new ting on insta , or simple boredom transferred into trouble , sum can count on this muse for some chaotic coping techniques . including but not limited to skipping classes altogether to get high at sum’s mom’s house , getting ( more ) impromptu matching tattoos or piercings , traveling to the city overnight to a rival college’s frat party , or streaking after hours around campus . nothing like some debauchery to relieve stress !

* 4EVER ⤻ formerly romantic , now platonic .

* summer’s a new student , so she doesn’t have more than two exes including this one , but this muse came into contact with summer in freshman year when she was in a long distance r/s with her ex from high school & would visit campus . they managed a long distance friendship & got into a medium in length but meaningful r/s shortly after she & her other ex broke up in sophomore year . figuring in spite of their feelings for each other , they worked better as friends in the long run , they too broke up for reasons tbd , but are now best friends .

* smack a b*tch ⤻ enemies .

* let the record state that there will be no actual smacking ! for one reason or another , your muse & sum have an ongoing rivalry . whether it’s cheerleading , their families knowing each other & are feuding ( a really good one would be if your muse’s mom is who sum’s dad cheated on celia with & is now engaged to ! ) as a result , secret attraction , sum & her eccentric personality ANNOYS them , or w/e else we can conjure . one thing’s for sure though — they are very much this whenever they’re around each other .

first of all, ferdinand is almost overwhelmingly earnest, and he’d be so determined to get to know you that being socially awkward is a non-issue. i think ferdinand is quite socially awkward in his own way; i’m not going to do a whole character analysis in your matchup, but i hope you get what i mean? like so many of his c-supports are him Colossally Fucking Up because he didn’t quite read the room right. BUT my point is that I think he’d make it really easy for you to get along with him (so long as you can put up with a little bit of obnoxiousness)

first of all, most sarcastic couple award. you guys would be hilarious; like a very niche brand that most other people don’t quite get, but those that do,,, they just think you two are the funniest people around

archery couple oh my goodness,,, OH THAT’S HOW YOU GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER teaching each other about archery and your tools of the trade and whoops guess we’ve Caught Feelings and now there’s nothing we can do about it

surprisingly, i think this is yet another case where you’d get along rather quickly; while you’re shy and a bit awkward, python is surprisingly approachable and unpretentious. he doesn’t hide anything, and he doesn’t hold back. he’s just easy.

i think he’d be the sort of person that’s good at taking care of you when you need it, without being overwhelming or obvious about it. he just knows what he needs to do. i also feel like he’d handle being snapped at very well? there’s just this unflappability to him.

while he’s not the most talkative guy around, but he’d always listen to you chatter away with a smile on his face. he likes it when you fill the silence, while he just lays there with his head in your lap.

a group of friends that would do just about anything for each other. they’ve grown up together, and their bond never changed as they made it through high school, college, and now into their adult lives. if one is in trouble, all they need to do is call and the others will come to their rescue, no matter where they are or what the situation is. even when some things in life aren’t as good or easy, there’s no doubt in any of their minds that they’ve always got a strong bond of friends to keep them grounded and love them unconditionally.

MUSE B has not lost confidence however, because they know one day that they’ll be able to get MUSE B to fall for them. It’s only a matter of time before they truly see what they’re missing.

MUSE A is working on building up their business, and MUSE B has a budding music career that could take them beyond anywhere they imagined. now that their futures are ahead of them, they know they have to say something, but they know that life isn’t a movie, and nothing is going to be easy.

MUSE A and MUSE B had a very short summer romance when they were thirteen years old, something that only lasted the length of a two month summer camp. they were each other’s first kiss, and though it was minor, it stays a fond memory for both of them. fast forward over a decade, and the two have since lost touch, not having any way to communicate after camp ended. both have changed fairly significantly, and neither is aware that they are now working in the same town, in the same building for that matter. how will this affect them? will they recognize each other off the bat, or will it take time? what will they do when they find out who they work with?

The secret pair has almost gotten caught a handful of times, but how many times is too many before MUSE A finds out what they’ve really been up to all this time, and how will they take the news of their significant other cheating?

MUSE A and MUSE B were in a relationship that quickly became toxic towards the end of it. as time went on, it became more of an on-and-off type of relationship, constantly breaking up and coming back together only to be more toxic each time. MUSE A has realized how harmful this is to them, and they’ve vowed that after the final breakup, they won’t go back to them ever again. However, MUSE B doesn’t know what to do without MUSE A in their life, so they will do anything they can to keep the other around, even if it isn’t healthy.

MUSE A knows that MUSE B isn’t good for them. they’re toxic, unfaithful, and MUSE A can do so much better than the person that they choose to stay with. Just when MUSE A decides (once again) that enough is enough, MUSE B will always do something to reel them back in. a smile, a compliment, a gesture, anything, and they’re back in the same stress they’ve been dealing with forever. will MUSE A eventually end it for good, or will the pair be in an endless, toxic loop?

MUSE A is the child of a super religious family, so they’ve always been sheltered, only being raised to follow god and their parents. they meet MUSE B, who is accompanied by a rowdy group of friends. they have a reputation for being much rougher around the edges , and they’re usually doing something to get them in trouble (it may not be on purpose, but for the sake of the thrill. MUSE B always tries to get MUSE A to come out with them, but MUSE A is always hesitant of getting caught by their family. MUSE B just wants them to live a little, but MUSE A’s parents have warned them against MUSE B because of how they treat people. MUSE A eventually agrees to sneak out with MUSE B, convinced by their behavior, and some sort of connection, whether that be romantic or platonic, begins to form. It doesn’t help that they still have to hide from MUSE A’s family.

aight strap in kiddo. heres how to win friends and influence smiles

first: find people that seem cool, or interesting to you. this is nowhere near as high stakes as it may seem because, though you may not know it yet, you don’t have to commit to being friends with someone just because you get to know them. we all make brunch and coffee date promises that will eventually go unfulfilled, not because we’re terrible people but rather we realize we’re better suited to hanging out with others. so, tldr: find cool people and don’t worry overmuch about it

now, find a way to talk to them. this depends on A. how often you see this person annnnd B. your own confidence level.

if you see a cool person and don’t immediately know how to approach them, the easiest way in the world to make friends is to open with a compliment and go from there. this sounds ridiculous, but I’m currently at a large university and I literally make friends every day. most of the time, that’s prompted by complimenting them. I once told a girl outside starbucks I loved how she was working that croptop, and she almost yelled with joy, complimented my hair, and demanded to ask for my instagram. if someone is in a rush I naturally don’t interrupt them, but I have stopped by other people’s tables or seats in cafés before to inform them how much I like their outfit/hair/earrings/messenger bag. after they fawn over the compliment, proceed to small talk.

small talk takes practice.

and thats okay! most things in life do! you’ll get better the more you do it - I swear to god I’m the proof.

bounce off whatever response they give to your initial compliment and, most importantly (and easiest for you!) keep the focus on them. try to end most - but not every one! - of your thoughts with an open question for them to keep the conversation rolling. complimented their jewelry? (usually a v. good pick, people take pride in their jewelry. sidenote, try to compliment things people choose: clothes, books, shoes, accessories. although “you have incredible eyes!” is a great compliment, it’s awkward as an opener because it A. requires you to have looked them in the eyes for a long period of time before talking to them and B. sounds like a pick up line. [I wait until I’ve been talking to them for a while before I acknowledge how wow, I’m sorry, the light just hit your eyes and they’re gorgeous! I’m sure you get that all the time, but wow.])

ask them where they got their bracelet. if someone got it for them, ask about the gift-giver. if they don’t remember where they got it, laugh and say that all the best pieces in a wardrobe are the ones you forget where they came from. give an example of your own, if applicable. try bouncing from complimenting their hair to asking where they get it done and maybe make a joke about how you wish you could bring a professional negotiator to your appointments, because otherwise you’ll ask for a trim, the stylist will give you a buzzcut, and you’ll say “oh thats perfect, thanks :))” almost everyone has had that experience, I promise.

I should also acknowledge: I’m writing this as a cis female. I can (and do) compliment a lot of people, mostly women. But I’ve been told that if you’re male-presenting, then giving such compliments to people of any gender might be seen as flirting? As such, for those who don’t present as girls: give compliments in a way that feels right for you. One of the best drive-by compliments I recently got from a guy was while I was late for a performance, striding across campus, and a guy passing by just said “Hey, I love your style,” without breaking stride or trying to force a conversation. No matter what you identify as, if you’re worried someone will think you’re hitting on them be sure to keep that air of, “I don’t mind if this conversation comes to a natural conclusion.” Even if you desperately want to be their friend, desperation is easily detected and can be as uncomfortable in platonic contexts as it is in romantic ones.

so don’t lean in too close, don’t force extended eye contact or stare, and don’t compliment any body parts unless you think you can do so without being suggestive. casually mirror their body language when possible (if they’re leaning their cheek on one arm, wait a beat or two before propping your chin up similarly) to make them feel like you’re attentive and similarly minded.

if you can immediately tell you have a common factor with a person, go for it. if someone’s reading a book you’ve read, or a book you want to read, or a book you wrote, sit sorta near them, glance their way and, acting as if you’ve just now recognized the book, ask them how they’re enjoying it. if they’re a deep reader and go “huh?” as your voice drags them up from the literary depths, give a self-effacing smile and say “Oh, I’m sorry to interrupt. That’s just one of my favorite books. How are you liking it so far?” this leads to any other question about a book you can imagine.

ditto any t-shirt about a form of media you’re familiar with, or patch or sticker or pin. all of those are just nerd flags flying high in pursuit of like-minded people to talk to. trust me.

once you’ve made enough small talk and, if it’s working well, try finding a “to be continued” thread. could be “oh, you come to this coffee shop every morning to? well maybe I’ll see you next Wednesday then! it was nice meeting you, have a good day c:” orrrr maybe it’s “awww your dogs adorable!! here’s pictures of my pet/any other vaguely related to the conversation thing on instagram. [insert photo sharing, wait until you both stop actively looking at the photo] oh here, what’s your instagram? I’ll follow you!” open the search tab and hand it to them so you don’t have to worry about mistyping.

also a very, very good method is to find something you can relate to the present conversation that you might not be able to immediately show. so an article, video, a picture you can’t-find-right-now, friend’s name, movie review, the name of this really cool bookstore you found in Annapolis because they mentioned they’re going there soon (if you really don’t mind bullshitting, find out where they’re traveling in the future, claim to remember a bookstore/museum/etc. you went to once, years ago and say oh shoot, what was the name? it was a pretty cool place - I’ll think of it tonight at like 2am. I can send you the name whenever I think of it if you like? [pause for answer] okay great! here, whats your number? and then go home, google some cool places, and text them a few hours later.) anything that gives you A. a way to continue this conversation and B. an excuse for not doing so immediately and, therefore, C. the chance to get their name & contact info.

now, if this isn’t just some cool-looking person you’re meeting for the first time, but someone you see regularly in a residential, academic or professional setting, start laying the groundwork for friendly vibes before you make a move. smile when you see them. if they’re a classmate, try sitting a lil closer (but not crazy close.) pay attention if they speak up in a group. if they drop something, and you don’t have to take extreme steps to do so, pick it up. if someone drops something across a lecture hall, don’t go running for it. but just close-lipped small smile + eyebrow flash when you see them and, after a few of these, try for a nod and/or a grin. if you’ve spoken to them at least once, if only to pick something up for them, you can try a “hey!/hello!” with a smile if they seem receptive to it. if you haven’t spoken to them yet, you’re welcome to try it if they seem receptive, but I usually wait.

if you don’t see this persona regularly, but semi-regularly, you need to evaluate whether the times you encountered them is significant enough for them to remember. please know this has waaay less to do with whether or not you’re memorable, and more to do with how much data our brains sort through every single day. think honestly about this, and decide this: when you eventually introduce yourself to them, would it be stranger to admit you remember the first time you both occupied the same space, or stranger to pretend to have forgotten?

I have a classmate who I vividly remember meeting for the first time, but we never really spoke until on instagram recently, 2 years later. So I never made a point of mentioning our meeting, until he actually referenced it! Then I went ahead and mentioned the highly-specific detail which made him so memorable as a question I was unsure of - “Ahaha yeah, his class was great! Weren’t you the one who _____?”

Try never to be presumptuously confident in social settings until your conversational partner indicates it’s appropriate. It is almost always more polite to allow yourself uncertainty.

case in point: my default when friends are introducing me to people who I’ve seen around a few times is “Oh! Hello, I’m ___, haven’t we met before?” Assuming you have met before (even and perhaps especially when you know for a fact you haven’t) is SO MUCH SAFER than asking “have we met?” When they respond in the negative, we haven’t, you get to say “Oh, really? I guess I’ve just seen you around so much, I could’ve sworn we were introduced. Well, it’s so nice to officially meet you!” and then proceed with small talk, ideally including whoever your third party member is or, in the event of being one-on-one with this prospective friend, try asking them some questions about wherever you’ve been seeing them (so what do you think of our biology lecture?) OR compliments (Oh, I just noticed how awesome your watch is! where did you find that?) OR any other question you like. proceed with the small talk until one or both of you seems ready to leave, there’s a decent enough lull in the conversation, OR you’ve found a “to be continued thread” which you can string up before making your goodbyes.

(Sorry if I’m exhausting this post with too many conversational examples, I just know how much younger, more-anxious me liked the idea of having a script to fall back upon)

don’t worry if you don’t get a contact method after the first conversation! you have spoken to the person, laid the ground work for a follow-up conversation, and that’s awesome. keep interacting with them when you see them, but be mindful of how interested they seem in interacting with you. the worst thing is to always stop and wait for a conversation when someone just wants to get on with their day. if they seem impatient, or busy, just say “hey! good to see you c:/have a good day c:/your hair looks great [insert name]!” and carry on.

Friendships aren’t formed by constantly forcing conversations with a person. They’re formed by being mindful of those around you, considering people’s perspectives & emotions, and having a positive presence people want to be around.

you can shoot them periodic texts or DM’s, depending upon the contact method. best to start off is to send or discuss things relevant to your IRL conversation. if that starts a whole new text convo: awesome!!! if it fizzles out; let it fizzle. wait a few days/week/etc. try asking them for a book or music or coffeeshop recc, because people fucking love an invitation to offer their opinion (what do you think this novella of an answer is?) and then springboard into your own tastes, things you like and dislike, and see how well your views and tastes align. remember, talking to a potential friend is just like an interview! you may feel like you’re under examination, and need to win their attentions, but you’re interviewing them for the position too.

finally, go ahead and invite them to hang out. you can do this waaaay earlier if you have sufficient reason/confidence to do so: if you compliment someone’s superhero shirt, and they say they can’t wait for the new movie next week, and you can’t either, say this! say you’re planning on going [insert date] if they wanna come get their mind blown with you and/or go halfsies on the pricey popcorn.

also, naturally: if you’re in a coffeeshop and both clearly plan to be there again sometime soon, establish when you’ll see them next. when you do: don’t seat yourself at their table unless A. they invite you to or B. they’ve been clearly invested in talking with you for more than a few minutes, at which point you can say “Do you mind if I sit?” and then boom! coffee friendship!!! which is also the best way to deal with the natural, awkward pauses that come between topics - you can both reach for your cups as you think of ways to continue

But: if you don’t have the excuse of “here, wanna study for the next exam together?” or “carpool to work together?” or any of the above, go ahead and find something you think they might like too. If you have other friends who’d be down, and who aren’t super abrasive or wild or super super shy personality types, go ahead and try to make it a group hang. “Hey! Some of my friends & I are going to the movies on Friday night if you’d care to join!” orrrrrr invite them to grab coffee if that’s not where you usually meet them, or invite them to an outdoor market or some cool event (ideally with free admission!) like a live concert or gallery showing, etc. etc.

If you only have their instagram when you first hang out with them, take a picture of them over the course of the night (not a selfie unless they ask for it.) I know how people feel about getting photographed, so I always take a bunch, tell them to try different poses, and then let them swipe through and pick their favorites for me to send them. offer the same, and tell them instagram/social media messagers kill the image quality if they don’t already know. Boom! now you have their phone number, and now they feel good about themselves bc of you. Woooo, positive correlations! if they want to take pictures of you, even if you’re squeamish around cameras, go ahead, laugh and let them go for it. otherwise, refusing the picture skews the friendship towards their ego, and suggest, if only subconsciously, that you like them more than you like yourself.

from then on, it should be pretty smooth! see how the hang out goes, decide whether you want to keep hanging with them (as I said, you have that right!) and then text them when you want to. and as you spend more time interacting with them, and grow more comfortable, you might have some of Friendship Bonding Moments™ I’ve encountered. such as: being told I played a minor role in someone’s weirdly vivid dream, anytime someone sent me a post/song/video/article of clothing/picture of a dog and said it reminded them of me, sending me a new song they love and demanding I listen to it, asking for my opinion on what they’re going to wear tonight, and/or whether they should post a picture to instagram, someone randomly calling me up to say they’re headed to my favorite diner at 2am, do I want to come? (~Just College Things~), telling me they made extra dinner/food/baked goods and do I want some?

and then, congrats! you have made friends! if you really like them, and enjoy this sincerely and/or ironically, feel free to make them a friendship bracelet to immortalize the event once you feel comfortable enough with them

(although I have also promised to make friendship bracelets for people I have just met + had very positive conversations with, preceded by “Okay, that’s it, we’re friends now. You can expect your friendship bracelet in 3-5 business days.” and they all, without fail, freak out over the mere thought of a friendship bracelet and the implication that we are now officially friends. this works on people I met like, less than 5 minutes ago. it’s also really easy to say “you can expect your friendship bracelet in 3-5 business days. Here, what’s your instagram/phone number? I’ll text you!” bear in mind: don’t be presumptuously confident. gauge their level of enthusiasm before you ask for their contact details, or take the joke too far. but know that most will almost immediately say yes, because even adults who may laugh at the thought are still just little kids deep down, and everyone wants a friend to like them enough to make them a friendship bracelet)

if you’re looking for more than just casual friends: time, conversations and empathy all help to turn casual acquaintances into friends you can trust & rely upon. asking how they’re doing if it seems they’re having a rough day and actively listening, offering advice (only if they want it) or food or an indulgent stress relief hang out, or asking (one of the rare times presumptuousness is okay!!) if they wouldn’t mind letting you vent about a coworker or something frustrating - any time you encourage them to emotionally share with you, or you offer to share your emotions with them, will help solidify your friendship. as much as I hate admitting when I’m sad to my close friends, those that I do admit it to are the ones I trust & rely upon the most.

finally, most importantly and, yes, most clichédly: be yourself. The more a friend learns about you, the deeper the friendship. Never lie about yourself for the sake of impressing a friend, or all that effort you’ve put into making a friendship will be built on false grounds. you’ll never be comfortable or relaxed around someone you have to act around, so don’t! if someone doesn’t like you for you, they’re not worth your friendship in the first place. I may sound like Dr. Seuss or Hallmark, but I’m serious.

Okay cool, so it’s 4:33 am and I should be studying for me french final in 6 hours, but hey, here’s like 3,000 words of rambly social advice and scripts. should I write a book about this? I feel like I could write a book about this. Hmm. Maybe thats just the espresso & caffeinated chocolate talking. please weigh in on book or nah in the comment section below

Star Wars: Queen's Shadow Review

Explore Padmé's life before Star Wars: Attack of the Clones with this fun YA novel. Our review of Queen's Shadow...

Queen’s Shadow isn’t the first Star Wars book to focus on the tragic senator Padmé Amidala, but it is the most rigorous.

During the Prequel era, readers could use one of The Phantom Menace fictional journals, or The Queen’s Amulet and Queen in Disguise middle-grade stories, get more information regarding the character. There was even a paper doll book. But there were Padmé fans who wanted more. Many made it themselves in the form of fanfic.

Queen’s Shadow gives Padmé a serious canon treatment for young adult and adult fans. Just like The Clone Wars, it’s better as connective tissue between movies than as a standalone story, but meticulous world-building and the depth of emotion the characters clearly have for one another gives it strength. Fans who have been waiting decades for Padmé to get the spotlight will enjoy this book.

The push of the plot comes from Padmé trying to prevent piracy in certain star systems and effect change (including trying to free the slaves on Tatooine), but really the story is a map between two Star Wars films. What was it like for Padmé to go from queen of Naboo to senator on Coruscant? What is it like to be one of her handmaidens, who serve as bodyguards and spies and friends all at once? This book has plenty to offer trivia buffs who want to know why Captain Typho took over for Captain Panaka, or lore readers who want the pathos, friendship, and tragedy of the handmaidens presented in a new way.

The new information about Padmé’s handmaidens feels both like a natural part of the saga and a wealth of new information. The level of detail is wonderful and instantly makes clear the relationships — platonic and romantic, casual and professional — between the women. Every aspect of their dress and behavior is explained. They are described as a shadowy crowd, and intentionally make it difficult for people to tell how many of them there actually are. I loved the portrayal of them as one unit or one creature, fading in and out of the light.

Padmé’s characterization is thorough, if sometimes a bit light: she is charismatic and honest, practically magnetic. She’s also naive about some things, shocked that grand cities can hide poor citizens or that political decisions are often made not in the Senate rotunda, but at parties afterward. Her emphasis on friendships and making connections with people helped me root for her. She’s smart, too, planning to intentionally inhabit “the wedge between Palpatine and his rivals.”

At times after reading it, I found myself reminded what Padmé would do in difficult social situations: she would carefully choose a persona and later retreat to her friends and be revitalized by them.

Each handmaiden has different skills and preferences, which are clearly marked, but the similarity in their voices and the (intentional) way in which the group blends in and then glides out as a single unit makes them less memorable individually. Although I liked the book’s emphasis on Padmé’s friendships, especially with Sabé, I found that the handmaidens did blur together at times. I don’t think that will be a barrier to fans who have already spent decades with these characters. Although there will certainly be differences between the Legends or headcanon versions of these characters and the canon ones, those are the kind of things Star Wars fans deal with all the time.

The opening is a bit vague, but it also plays well with images from the saga, Padmé’s death hanging over her like an epic battle, not a broken-heart afterthought. The biggest problem is that the book feels episodic instead of connected. In that regard, it’s limited by where it has to end: we know Padmé succeeds as a senator but does so in a corrupt government, and that what could have been an intriguing plot is lost in a messy movie that does not give Padmé nearly as much interiority as this book.

Maybe that explains why the pacing of the ending is oddly truncated, both in terms of specific scenes and the plot overall. A B-plot featuring Sabé felt more company-mandated than the rest and contributed to the feeling that the second half of the book had lost the push of the plot. The book’s biggest action scene is held back by the very thing that gives the book its strength: Padmé trusts her people to keep her safe, so it never really feels to the reader like she’s in danger.

There’s a tragedy to the Prequels that gets lost in the larger conversation about their tone as compared to the Original Trilogy, and Queen’s Shadow handles that tragedy well. Sometimes that means moments of irony: the beautiful Naboo lake house, one of the many underappreciated and under-used settings of the Prequels, is portrayed as a serene refuge moments before Senator Palpatine comes to visit. Others are cameos I won't spoil here, but which tie Padmé’s story to the larger saga nicely.

Most importantly, the book gives Padmé the dignity and attention countless other Star Wars characters have received. Young women’s stories are still often reserved for the Young Adult genre: Ahsoka and Leia: Princess of Alderaan were also relatively short novels that added nicely to the Star Wars canon with varying degrees of success. Padmé rarely featured in Prequel Legends novels the way Anakin did, in part because the story didn’t put a spotlight on her life so much as her death. It’s great to see that changed now and to see the closeness and ferocity of the handmaidens.

Like many Star Wars books, the amount of fun you’ll have with this one might depend on how much you like the canon characters in the first place. It doesn’t transcend the voice of a typical Star Wars novel, but it does fit Padmé firmly into a narrative from which she has often been removed. And that feels like the long-awaited return of a good friend.

Pick one of your characters and talk about their growth (we recommend choosing an older character, but it’s up to you!) What about their story has surprised you? What are you proud of? How have they changed from their original inception to now?

Tink Bell: These three years have been one hell of a roller coaster for Tink. It seems like just yesterday I was writing my town alcoholic hell-bent on having a good time even though inside she was a mess. When we first saw Tink, she was your typical punk-rock rebel without a cause. Her idea of a good time was a good lay, a bottle of tequila, and whatever drugs she could find. She was an absolute mess. And as the years progressed we saw Tink sort of lose herself. She got lost in the bottle and the drugs and the dark spiral that was her mind. She lost some good friends (Simba) in the process and made some unexpected ones (Copper, I’m talkin’ about you). But like a phoenix she rose from the ashes and repaired herself and those friendships she lost. She got an amazing girlfriend who literally went through hell and back with her (pun intended). And now as the year closes, so does this chapter of Tink’s life. Her life of adventure with Sophie is starting and it’s the ending I always wanted for Tink. Cue girl walking into the sunset with a bag slung over her shoulder ready to take on the world.

Adam Best: My babe I’ve had the second longest, not counting the time I dropped him for personal reasons. He’s also a character that has been through a lot. We’ve seen Adam be the surly young man who only wants to punish himself for all the death and destruction he’d caused. He was grappling with the loss of his parents and the loss of his first serious girlfriend. That’s a lot for a dude. He made mistakes, hurt people he grew to care about. Then he got himself a best friend and then a boyfriend and things were looking up for our dear Adam. Then Jaby had an existential life crisis and all that went to shit. Adam found a journal that said you could get rid of the curse by killing the wolf that killed you and guess what? Adam went to Greece and got his ass kicked. But it was a brand new starting point for me and my boy. It allowed me to delve into Adam’s need for a normal human life and try to figure out a way to reconcile it with the fact he will never have that. I expected Adam to remain very surly when I picked him back up and to an extent he has. But he’s also moved away from that. He’s no longer filled with the same angst. Instead it’s changed and evolved into something so much more. He’s no longer mourning his parents and Jennifer but instead mourning the life he’ll never get to have. It’s something I never expected from him and I’m honestly very excited to see where it takes us.

Pick another character and talk a little about where you WANT them to go. What are your plans for them going into the new year?

DeSoto Sykes: Ugh man, I have so much planned for DeSoto. Lauren and I have actually talked out a lot with these brothers and where we want them to end up. I know he’s going to stay a big presence in Swynlake. I’d love for him to become one of the big kingpins in town. It would be hilarious because that’s what his father was back in New York and it’s what he’s been running from for nearly three years. I want him to grow and realize that having people you care about isn’t necessarily a weakness. Des has a long long way to go and his story is far from over.

Rita Saluki-Sykes: It’s no secret that Rita has become my loudest muse, slowly taking the place of Tink if I’m honest. I’ve only had her for a year or so but she’s already been put through the ringer. Her marriage went from one of necessity to one that was almost over to finally something that resembles what she’s always wanted. Even more so now that she’s got her own little kiddo on the way. I’d like to see Rita settle into that mother role. From what we’ve seen she enjoys the night life, partying and eating up all the attention she can get. But with her little one all that is going to change and she’s going to have to become that mother figure. And she’s going to have to balance care and attention for Ollie with the new baby. It’ll be interesting to see how she juggles being a businesswoman, wife, and mother.

Pick a thread or a plot that you’re proud of and talk about why you loved it.

UHM HELLO INTO THE FOREST. Two years ago I did one of these and said how I wanted Soleil to tap into her powers and channel her rage and this is the result of that. This plot was hands down my favorite plot I’ve ever done. It gave me a chance to break Soleil down to her darkest depths, fueled by the loss of Zero and then the fact KNIGHTS or whatever were hurting things in her forest. It was a slow burn plot and one that took a lot of work from everyone involved and it culminated into the best thing I’ve ever witnessed.

In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 strengths and talk about why you think it’s one of your strengths.

Voice. I still think voice is something that I have a good grasp on when it comes to my characters. From Rita’s and DeSoto’s New York accents to Duchess’ French lilt and prim and proper upbringing, I think it’s something that shows distinctly in my writing.

Villains. I love my villains, I love devling into their minds and figuring out what makes them tick. And I’m tooting my own horn when I say that I’m pretty damn good at it. From Taka to Oogie (however brief he may have been), I’ve brought some pretty interesting villains to BDRP and I hope to continue to do so. I’ve got a few character ideas at the ready that I am more than eager to bring to life.

In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 areas of improvement.

Plotting! I am the absolute worst when it comes to coming up and approaching people with plots. And I think a big part of that is because I really love for things to develop organically. I’m not one to nudge my characters into something I’m not sure of. I need to break out of that so that I can actually accomplish some of the things I want to for my characters.

Direction. It’s easy for me to lose direction when writing. A reply will start off as one thing and then before I know it it’s shifted to something else entirely. It makes writing an arduous process and often irritating.

Pick one of your plots, or even just a character, and come up with a list of 3-5 “mentor texts” where you can look for inspiration or research, then write a short (2-4 sentences) why you picked those texts. (For example, if I picked Apollo, reading “Akata Witch,” “Children of Blood and Bone,” “Trials of Apollo” series, and Homer’s Iliad might provide inspiration for different reasons– the former two for Nigerian culture and magic and the latter two for a deeper look at Greek Mythology. No, you don’t have to have read these books– maybe you just want to read them!)

Okay so picking Soleil’s forest takedown these are the things I’d look into:

Batman comics featuring Poison Ivy - Mainly because Poison Ivy is one of the few female baddies that have the same sort of magic that Soleil has. And she’s gone down Soleil’s path of wanting to take over the world with plants. It’d be a way to get inside of angry Soleil’s mind.

BtVS s6ep22 “Grave” - This is actually the episode of Buffy that sparked this desire to have Soleil go down that path of evil. It was a possible ending for Soleil in which she didn’t turn into a tree and feed her magic to Enchantra as a way to make amends. This episode showed the power of true love (even if that love is platonic) and how it can stop evil. And it was something that I had wanted to experiment with in Soleil.

The Master Book of Herbalism - Okay this book would give insight to what Soleil did. How, even before she was the spring sprite, she had a vast knowledge of plants and how to use them.

And now, a wishlist! Jot down a few themes or stories or genres etc that you want to maybe pursue in the upcoming year! (i.e. a good ol’ fashion forbidden romance, maybe you want to dig deep into racial identity etc) This doesn’t have to necessarily be attached to any characters or stories you have now– it’s just meant to help you see for yourself what kind of stories call to your heart.

F O R B I D D E N RO M A N C E- like please guys, you don’t know how badly I want one of these. What’s more drama filled than two people who should not be together at all? Fandom Meme

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.

Uuuh, well, lemme think, for fantoms that aren’t sonic stuff, I enjoy Retsuko and Haida because adorable. Angus and Gregg from NITW is too adorable for it’s own good.

Sonic wise, well, I’m not strong on my ships but they’re are some I do think about or do think are matching, I think Shade and Knuckles are a good match, I enjoy Espio and Tikal, especially in my canon.

I do love Locke and Luger a lot though, since I can see them working in my canon, but other then that, I’m not huge on ships so eh.

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

Locke and Luger, mainly because they were related but then with some fanart and talking with friends of mine, especially @terraqua111, I started to like it and my friends had a point that they were too distantly related for it to matter anymore. She also showed me Lien-Da and Xenin which I liked.

I also didn’t consider Locke to be paired with anyone else before Luger, then I saw @lockewat‘s ship, Chuck and Locke... and I thought it was quite suiting as well.

Two other ones are Vanilla and Big because that was so adorable and that would be such a peaceful relationship good god it’s what they’d both need, so many picnics for dates. and @motobugg did some work on Rouge and Wave which I have never considered and I immediately thought... damn that would actually work a lot. XD Also Shadamy at some points due to a friends artwork and Shadow would be balanced from Amy’s personality that he would need.

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will. I’ve never been big on Julie-Su and Knuckles, in the comics it felt kind of forced to me, same with Sonic and Sally, that I don’t see them suiting each other at all.

Ummmm... not that I know of.

Animal Crossing? I didn’t start playing the phone game until I saw people talking and reblogging stuff about it, then I tried it.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Well, in Steven Universe, a lot of the character have great arcs, that who their true opinions and colours, like how Amethyst had self-hating habits, Pearl didn’t think she was worth much, and seeing Peridot’s growing into a whole different gem, it’s really cool.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

I’ll go with um... Lars from Steven Universe, I didn’t like him much as a character at first, but I could understand his insecurity and being unsure on how to act and how to show himself, and being scared to show his true colours... but now he’s showing his own worth and letting himself be who he is with the Off-colours, which I can genuinely appreciate about him, he’s much better as a character now.

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Can I say the entire brotherhood? XD I would love that like you wouldn’t believe.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

Just more Brotherhood content in general, uuuummm more monster-related AU’s? I don’t know, maybe more merchandise too? I don’t know I’m not all that demanding about content. o-o I’m terrible at this.

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

All the Way (Jacksepticeye fan song) is the one that came up on shuffle, and it reminded me of Hawking, at least my version. I could imagine he would listen to this to motivate himself or something like that.

I haven’t really abandoned any fandom? o-O R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?

When they’re not a couple and they’re just best friends, Locke and Luger I guess, they act like big dorks. I don't know, I don’t think about relationships much besides family ones.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

Hmm, well, I feel while Locke doesn’t know what his main sexuality is right now, he’d feel he’d be in writing (sexuality)/Asexual, as he never really had sexual feelings, he only had sex in order to have his son, and he honestly never liked it all that much.

I also have a head canon that Steppenwolf is afraid of humiliation, or just making a fool of himself in social situations (he’s got a very well hidden social anxiety), so if he saw a bunch of people staring at him and whispering to each other, he’d instantly become worried about what he did.

Another head canon is that I love to imagine Sabre can swordfight very well, and the person who taught him is surprisingly Tobor. As he was very good with a sword and shield combo back in the day (before his injuries).

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

That Steppenwolf is a werewolf okay not really, I’m not really about strong head canons that I would ‘die defending’. I just like the thought of him being one because it’d be ironic for his name... and it’s just with me for so long man.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

Steppenwolf (Sonic Fandom I guess)- I still don't fully understand why I liked him, I simply did but nowadays I just find the character I made him an extremely interesting character and every time I’ve wrote something or drawn something to try and cheer myself up, it made me feel he’d be a very strong, protective and oddly supportive in his own way. I’m not sure. I’m weird.

Lapis Lazuli (Steven Universe Fandom)- I just want her to be happy, I find her really interesting, her powers are really cool and I just want to know how things turn out for her, it just sucks that she tends to disappear for long periods of time.

Angus (Night in the Woods)-He’s a bit underrated but he’s just so cute to me, especially with how others draw him, I love his character and I feel bad for him when he takes about his abusive childhood and issues growing up that made him who he is today, made me want to give him a big hug.

V - Which character do you relate to most?

Well, I feel I can relate to Angus at a few points, always feeling like I have to be the responsible one, being usually quiet and wanting to hide in corners in parties (and your friend that you stick to is your corner in those situations),

I also feel I can relate to Retsuko from Aggretsuko, always trying to keep calm and from losing my temper, also Mister Ton kind of reminds me of my dad at some points... and he can piss me off just as much as he does with Retsuko so yeah.

Part of me also feels like I relate to my version of Rembrandt, he’s an artist, he deals with a lot of emotional issues, he’s insecure about his body size/weight, very motherly/fatherly and protective.

I dunno.

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

Annoying characters that think they’re full of themselves and practically perfect while thinking everyone else is below them and everyone is unworthy of their ‘greatness’... or mary-sues.

Or just a needlessly dramatic moments or moments of anger and arguments that don’t need to happen.

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Kind of the big strong protective one with a heart of gold and is very loving whether they show it or not, or big ass ones who are strong as hell but are really just gentle giants.

And probably monsters stuff like werewolves or stuff but sometimes that can backfire and become annoying.

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

Team Fortress 2 is one, have a few friends who like that game while I don’t like it much anymore for personal reasons, some horror fandoms like Five Nights at Freddy’s, Little Nightmares all of that. Idk

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

Umm... I always strive to make my Guardians unique in different situations, hell, I imagined they were in certain AU’s or in certain video game situations, like a fighting game, I’d like imagining like ‘finishing moves’ they’d have or the type of weapons they’d have, or even simple stuff like hobbies or favourite foods. Just stuff like that... and I will try everything in my power to be unique, like in my Gem AU, wanted all the gems to be different and at the least unique, and the same with the Monster AU, only Thunder and Steppe’s are the same but they have a difference.

Okay that’s enough. ^^; This was really difficult surprisingly.

Character Study

(Cut for length.)

1. What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?

Idristan likes to think that he wants to settle down somewhere, maybe focus on writing down everything he’s learned about voidsent and voidtouched, and start a very nice garden. But in truth, I don’t think he’s ever really gonna do that. He gets really restless when he has nothing to do. Plus, it doesn’t do his self-destructive habits any good...

2. How easy is it for your character to laugh?

Depends on how you’re going about it. He can appreciate wit and laughing at others. More traditional jokes might not fly as well.

3. How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)

These days? He’s been mainly using a combination of alcohol and potions to more or less pass out. Usually he would read or think for a bit.

4. How easy is it to earn their trust?

Idristan believes in varying degrees of trust. Getting him to trust you completely is hard. He’s been living with some secrets that could get him killed for years, and it’s really hard to get him to open up entirely with anyone because of that--at least, if he gets a choice in the matter.

5. How easy is it to earn their mistrust?

Fairly easily. Again, varying degrees.

6. Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?

Very flexible. Idristan believes in doing what is right--specifically, what he believes is right. If that means doing things that are illegal in the pursuit of that, then so be it.

7. What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?

Spending time in the Brume. The smell of beef stew. Snow on Starlight. And it’s mixed for him. He enjoyed his childhood, as much as could be expected, but there’s a lot of guilt and regret there now too. He is sorry he couldn’t be there for his sister for all those years or speak to his mother again before she died.

8. What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?

To stop getting into fights.

9. Do they swear? Do they remember their first swear word?

Oh, yeah. He mainly sticks to blasphemy, but slips in a bloody, shite, or fuck now and then. All that Limsan influence lately. And yes. If only because his mother came down hard on him for it.

10. What lie do they most frequently remember telling? Does it haunt them?

Honestly, it’s hard for him to keep track. Once you’re gone through a couple of different identities and general lying about your past, it can be hard to keep straight. Perhaps saying he’s fine when he’s really not--and that one has gotten him into trouble before.

11. How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?

He’ll ask for clarification. Often not very nicely, but he’ll ask.

12. How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach?

Grumble and try to ignore it.

13. What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?

Black, of course. And it’s not bad on him, though he can pull off white fairly well too.

14. What animal do they fear most?

Dragons. Certain voidsent.

15. How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?

Carefully. He tends to hold back a lot (see lack of trust). Certain topics you practically see his mind working as he judges answers.

16. What makes their stomach turn?

Working with cultists.

17. Are they easily embarrassed?

Yes. He is rather prideful.

18. What embarrasses them?

Weakness. Admitting he made a mistake.

19. What is their favorite number?

20. If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?

“One is about the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and would do anything for.... the other is about your sister.”

21. Why do they get up in the morning?

Because lying around doing nothing is far worse.

22. How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)?

He tends to become possessive, and a bit sulky as well.

23. How does envy manifest itself in them (they take what they want, they become resentful, etc)?

Sooo much resentment. So much. He’s far better about it now that’s he’s older, but it flares up every now and then.

24. Is sex something that they’re comfortable speaking about? To whom?

To his partner he’s fine with it. To everyone else, not really. He thinks it’s something that should be kept private. Basically he’s still a bit of a prude--though he’s getting better about it.

25. What are their thoughts on marriage?

He likes the idea. He’s very much a monogamist and a traditional romantic. While he could live happily with a partner without ever making it official, there’s part of him that wants to do the whole ceremony and everything.

26. What is their preferred mode of transportation?

Anything but airships. Seriously. Anything.

27. What causes them to feel dread?

The thought that his secrets might come out. The idea that he might lose himself or hurt someone because of one of them. Inquisitors. Airship travel.

28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

No.

29. Do they usually live up to their own ideals?

Yes, but he usually doesn’t see it that way himself. His standards for himself are far higher than those he keeps for other people.

30. Who do they most regret meeting?

Uathach, Draidetch, Richaud.

31. Who are they the most glad to have met?

@solennelagarde, of course. And @ser-gemini. And @synn-heolstor and Michaux... not he would ever admit that to either of their faces. And ARK as a whole is slowly getting there.

32. Do they have a go-to story in conversation? Or a joke?

No, he tends to wing it. And since most of his jokes are either at someone’s expense or rather grim and fatalistic, it’s perhaps for the best he doesn’t always start with them.

33. Could they be considered lazy?

Kind of. He gets bored easily, and that tends to result in him slacking off--or trying to pin whatever it is on someone else. If it’s something he actually cares about though? Hello obsession, my name is Idristan.

34. How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt?

That’s actually possible? Someone should really tell him; the guy hangs onto things and just beats himself up, sometimes for years. It’s not pretty.

35. How do they treat the things their friends come to them excited about? Are they supportive?

If it’s something that interests him, he’ll share in the excitement, at least to a degree. If not, you’re more likely to get a “yeah, that’s nice” and perhaps an attempt to change the topic.

36. Do they actively seek romance, or do they wait for it to fall into their lap?

He tends to wait for it.

37. Do they have a system for remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order (like anagrams, putting things to melodies, etc)?

For names he tries to memorize them along with the face. Or... sometimes tries, if he thinks it’ll actually be worth it. Long lists and numbers I can see him trying to turn into songs, or at least something he can hum.

38. What memory do they revisit the most often?

The happy ones are mainly of his family and the time he spent with Solenne and all of his friends in the last free company he was apart of. He doesn’t really try to dwell on them, especially now.

The unhappy ones... well, those tend to come up in nightmares and certain places. There are reasons he avoids certain places in the Shroud now.

39. How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people?

Very, very difficult.

40. How sensitive are they to their own flaws?

Oh, he’s aware of them. He just chooses to ignore them.

41. How do they feel about children?

He likes them. He wants some of his own one day.

42. How badly do they want to reach their end goal?

Extremely. It’s honestly a bit unhealthy.

43. If someone asked them to explain their sexuality, how would they do so?

“I mainly like women. Not that it’s likely any of your concern, because flings don’t really tend to interest me.”

QUESTIONS FOR CREATORS A) Why are you excited about this character?

He’s fun. He’s prickly enough to create conflict, but also has that hidden sense of empathy and concern for others--one that he will vehemently deny if you push him on it. He also has some fairly lofty goals that give him a direction to move in--even if it’s unlikely that he’ll ever achieve a few of them, watching him struggle is entertaining. Plus, he’s got a lot of stuff that he struggles with, so that can come into play--and a few secrets that can be danced around. Basically it’s just easy to throw him into things and see what happens. That and he’s gone through some really interesting growth already, and I’m interested in seeing which direction he moves in now.

B) What inspired you to create them?

Honestly? Two things. Thanks to the MSQ and some Ishgard rp I really started to like the setting and wanted an Ishgardian to play around on. Second, I fell in love with the characters from a podcast--or at least, the idea for one. Basically there was one guy who started out as a psychologist then got dragged into the occult and became a paranormal investigator. So I took the basic idea, twisted it a bit (voidsent hunter instead of investigator), and found a way to make it work with an Ishgardian backstory. He actually ended up pretty different than said character as a result, especially motivation-wise. C) Did you have trouble figuring out where they fit in their own story?

Sometimes. I feel like I’m really not that great at coming up with long-term plots, plus it hasn’t always been easy to find people that he bounces off of well. D) Have they always had the same physical appearance, or have you had to edit how they look?

Pretty much the same. I settled on what he would look like really on once I had an idea what I was working on.

E) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?

No, probably not. I mean... the guy’s kind of a jerk. And he’s pretty particular about the people he likes. F) What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)?

Sometimes I just want to facepalm cause he’s a stubborn idiot who doesn’t always think about peoples’ feelings. But I’m proud of all the ways he’s changed too. G) What trait of theirs bothers you the most?

He is really self-destructive. He’s got some bad habits that he is actively not working on, has a bad tendency of pushing people away, and just.... being too prideful and stubborn to admit that he needs help. H) What trait do you admire most?

His stubbornness, ironically. He’s gone through a lot, yet he’s still around and he’s still empathetic to other people. He wants to do some good in the world. He hasn’t let it turn him completely resentful and bitter. I) Do you prefer to keep them in their canon universe?

I usually come up with new characters for new settings. An AU could be interesting though. J) Did you have to manipulate or exclude canon factors to allow them to create their character?

I had to dive really into Ishgard lore to make sure that I was getting everything right (hell, I had to check something fairly recently). So I feel fairly confident his backstory makes sense and fits with what we know. There’s been some other stuff that’s happened to him that’s a bit lore-bendy, and while I feel like I can justify it really well, I acknowledge what it is.

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, Sam/Rahne, Ariel and Eric (first when I was 5, even though I wanted to be Ariel), Rachel Tobias (first when I was actually gettin into fandom), Jake/Cassie (Animorphs), Clark/Lana, Clark/Lois (I think??) and Chloe/Ollie, Romy (even in Evo at a point!), and now Eliza and Goliath in Gargoyles. I keep saying I’m not a shipper, but I think I’m just a subtle one that pines and doesn’t read a lot of fanfic, but my heart swells over seeing my OTP on screen

TV Shows and Western (superhero) Animation mostly, but also a few animes.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

I was annoyed by the Agents Of Shield fandoms behavior for a while, but I’ve never stopped liking any fandoms because of Tumblr.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)

SuperWhoLock, Riverdale...some other popular teen shows.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Tie between Sailor Moon and Gambit I guess, but I’m sure there are lots of others. Sailor Jupiter has a good arc as well, even though she doesn’t have a lot of character development TBH.

Roberto Dacosta’s super strength power is pretty cool and he’s a chill guy. And rich. (I just realized that a lot of X-Men characters are rich, actually. Gambit, Xavier, Warren and him. Holy crap.)

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Moon. TAS Rogue too, because she seems fun to hang with, and who wouldn’t like to be called “Sugah” all the time?

For any fandom? A mad scientist and a famous baker get together after the scientist contacts aliens, resulting in a warring invasion on earth.

Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.

To be perfectly honest, The Smurfs because we’re a Christain household and we found it had stuff in it we didn’t agree with. I was three. Other than that, I’ve only given up one other fandom permenantly that wasn’t what I thought it was and chosen at a bad time.

R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?

Kurt and Kitty in Evo, and Logan and Kurt is cool, but I don’t actually pay much attention to it.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

Hmmm. One that isn’t too boring? Remy isn’t (wasn’t? He is married now) particular about a woman’s height and is comfortable enough with himself to date a woman much taller or shorter than he is. (Remember, Frenzy was freaking 6′7 before she got rebooted to a normal height and it was implied they had history.) For a while it was a wish of mine they’d pair him with a short gal, because all X-women are physically clones of each other, minus Rahne, Kitty and Jubilee. Blargh. Oooh, just had an idea for a new art project to make the girls look individual! ^_^

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Besides the above? Uh...headcannon that Remy smells good and his hair is silky to the touch and yes I’m a sick, weird little person, I know. Haha, not really. I’m not much of a headcannon person.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

* Gambit: Hot, suave, lit, accent, good cook, romantic, my fictional ideal man (told you, I’m sick and weird). * Sailor Jupiter: Sweet, loyal, living on her own at bloody 14 years old, strong physically and emotionally, had trouble believing/finding her feminity like me, tall (not like me!), brunette character, thunder powers. * Tuvok (Star Trek): My second crush ever, calm, reflective, hot grandpa, sarcasm galore, strong, suffers emotionally and physically, POC and like the only black vulcan that I know of, cute little boy chest, that butt (XD), frakin’ hot.

V - Which character do you relate to most?

Surprisingly, one I haven’t talked about yet and that I’m not really fandom-y about. Rapunzel from Tangled. When I saw the movie, I was attached to her immediately. I’d grown up homeschooled and at that point I’d been caregiving for one of my parents for six years at that point, unable to move out and get married and have much of a life, so I was always metaphorically in a tower too. I have childish interests, am artistic and creative, have done LOTS of self-insert art like her, and am a generally happy person (even if I don’t always show it and don’t smile enough). So, out of every character in my many fandoms, I relate to Rapunzel the most. Also, I have only 2 things of Tangled merch-the movie, the soundtrack, and a gorgeous bedspread that’s actually based on the show, but doesn’t look like it. (I don’t like it’s animation/character designs, so it’s been hard to get into it.)

W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.

OMG, do we have to go here? Anything over-sexualized or kinky or just plain gross/weird. (v***, gore, ect.) There’s this one X-Men:Evo artist on DA that would be brilliant, but I can’t stomach their gallery because they feel the need to do a few v*** and bondage pics amongst otherwise G-rated pictures. *throws up* IT’S A SHOW FOR 7-YEAR OLDS!!

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Huge guy, Tiny girl! (but it looks...weird...in live action. *Good Luck Charlie flashbacks*.) Also age differences. Some people are put off by Usagi and Mamo’s age difference in Classic, but I think it’s cute and they were really chaste about it. Specifically, I liked the part where he told her to do well in school for some reason.

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)? Holy crap, Pride and Prejudice and Anne of Green Gables. No one on my dash is into them though, it’s a real life thing. Long story.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

I have written more self-inserts than is probably healthy, but at least I’ve mostly gotten past my teenage phase of thinking anime guys are hot and it’s extended to Gambit as well. I’d much rather see him be portrayed by a living, breathing actor semi-bringing my fantasies to life than as a drawn character. Well, not that I’m not happy seeing him animated and his voice in Evo is still super hot, but that’s another thing. Anyway, on that note, I wish XM:E weren’t a dead fandom and I could get more reviews instead of just faves/follows. I get so frustrated, because I’m not writing my fics for myself, I’m writing them to finish the story and for the fans. I know OCs/SI aren’t everyones bread and butter, but when you work hard on something, you want people to enjoy and appreciate it on it’s own merits. My regulars dropped off the planet and the fandom is just not that active online. (It’s still kind of active though, otherwise the Gambit and other prints on Steven Gordon’s online store wouldn’t have sold out so fast.) I wish it had been as creative as the MLP fandom, but even that wouldn’t have saved it. Thankfully, there are a few people “keeping the faith”, like Coldfusion180 and some others. They haven’t abandoned it and people have made AMVs for it in recent years, long after the shows cancellation. I know we’ve all moved on in one way or another, but it’s still nice to see the love for the show and it’s characters going strong, even if we’re now a niche fandom, tiny, but there. And even if I don’t get another single review up until the last in the series, at least I can say I finished it, if nothing else. Even if your fandom is dead, keep supporting it. If we don’t keep the characters alive, they die and are forgotten. They need us.

5 Hobbies (if applicable): Most of my pastimes are the usual things: reading, drawing and the like. I also love to write, and hand-in-hand with that I do a lot MORE reading (which I tend to refer to as “research”) trying to make what I write more believable or at the very least less nonsensical. But I do learn interesting if mostly useless tidbits here and there. I also frequently enjoy walking on nature trails or in parks in my area, particularly if they’re around water.

Favorite Genre of Music/Movies/Books: I’ll start with the easiest half of this question. My taste in books and movies is pretty much the same thing; fantasy. Futuristic, medieval, dystopian, superheroes, magic; I love it. As for music, that’s a little harder to pin down.

Last song you listened to on repeat: I actually don’t recall what song I last listened to on repeat, so instead I’ll tell you the song that’s been stuck in my head. It’s Art of War by Anberlin.

Last phrase you said to another living person: “I tried.”

How many blankets do you sleep with: No more than 3, but it has to be pretty cold before I resort to a third blanket.

7 note worthy skills: I like to cook, and I have no qualms about trying out new recipes (though I make no promises about results). I’m rather articulate and have a deep fondness of words (which I don’t use very often because most of the people I deal with day to day wouldn’t get/appreciate it). I like to sing, well enough to my own ears. I’m a good listener, empathic perhaps to a fault, and I’m good with keeping secrets.

7 noticeable sins: Honestly, I’ve been guilty of all seven at one time or another.

Allergies/impairments/illnesses: My first stint in the hospital three years ago leads me to believe I’m allergic to the antibiotic Bactrim. Apparently it makes my immune system try to kill me.

Level of Intelligence on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being dumb, 2 being below average, 3 being average, 4 being above average and 5 being genius): I’d say I’m probably average. Maybe a shade above.

Level of Fitness on a scale of 1 to 5( 1 being obese, 2 being overweight, 3 being average, 4 being fit and 5 being skinny): This one’s a 2.

Level of Attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being Anderson, 2 being below average, 3 being average, 4 being above average and 5 being Mycroft): Again, I would say average, but like most people I could be bias one way or another.

Feline, canine or both: I love how easy-going most dogs are, but I feel like it’s more rewarding when a cat likes you. Currently I have a dog and a cat.

Confidence Level on a scale from 1 to 5 (1 being nonexistent, 2 low, 3 average, 4 above average and 5 Sherlock): I’m going to say 2.5 for this one. It’s not great, but it’s not what it was. And I’m working on it.

Position in the Family (oldest, youngest, middle): I’m the oldest. My brother is 8 years younger than me and we’re pretty close.

Eye Color: I’m told they’re hazel, but closer to the blueish-green side.

Hair Color and Length: Sandy brown, cut just above my shoulders. It gets lighter in the summer time.

Height: 5'7, give or take.

Combat level on a scale 1 to 5 (1 being useless, 2 being somewhat capable, 3 being average, 4 being more than capable and 5 being expert): I’d like to think I’m a 3. Thankfully that’s never been tested.

Your normal dress: I work in an office, so it’s business-casual most of the week. I like dressing nicely, but I’m equally as happy in jeans and a T-shirt or sweatshirt.

How well you take rejection on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being temper tantrum, 2 being vindictive, 3 being average, 4 being can take it like a man, and 5 being like water off of a duck’s back): Handling rejection is another one of those things that’s a little tough to pin down. Humans are essentially pack animals, we’re wired to want to belong and be accepted. Though some of us have had more experience with it than others. That being said, I’d be between 2 and 3 on this one. I wouldn’t turn vindictive, though.

Languages known: I took American Sign Language and Spanish in school, but that of course was years ago. I did well in ASL, but was nowhere near conversational.

Cleanliness of your bathroom on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being a crime scene, 2 being messy, 3 being average, 4 being pretty clean and 5 being perfectly spotless): It’s going to have to be a 2 on this one. Definitely due for a once-over with a Magic Eraser.

How big is your circle of friends on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being nonexistent, 2 being very small, 3 being average, 4 being large, and 5 being a massive social network): I have a good number of acquaintances, but a very small circle of people I consider to be friends.

How would you rate your mental health on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being very poor, 2 being poor, 3 being average, 4 being good, and 5 being prefect): Looking back, even as recently as a year ago, I feel like I can accurately say I am a 3.

Opinions on the current Holmes family members ( Siger Holmes, Violet Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and Eurus Holmes): Eurus is easiest, so I’ll start with her. She reminds me of the exotic snakes at the zoo; fascinating to observe and study so long as there’s a layer of thick glass between us. Sherlock’s next easiest, he’s intriguing, funny (often without meaning to be) and someone whose company I dare say I’d enjoy. Siger’s pretty precious in my opinion, I imagine the two of us would get along well; and for the most part I’d say the same of Violet as long as I keep on her good side.

As to the question portion, I spent quite awhile reading and re-reading and pondering. I couldn’t answer them all, but I took a shot.

Question Portion:

1) If you ask me to prove it I wouldn’t be able to, but I would assume angle C is the sum of angles A and B since the vertex of all three begin in the lower left hand corner and the rays meet in the upper right hand corner (does that even make sense?)

2) I honestly have no idea how to solve that. Math has never been my strongest subject, so I tend to stick to what I know.

3) I’ve read through this one over and over and I still can’t make heads or tails of it. I fold.

4) I would say that shooting Mr. White first would be best. He never misses, while with Mr. Gray there’s the possibility that he will miss.

5) 5+5+5+5 ≠ 555

6) I’ve been puzzling over the man in the elevator, but I can’t figure out why he wouldn’t just take the elevator all the way to his floor. Unless he has claustrophobia. Though if he had claustrophobia, why would he take the elevator at all?

7) Well if the room has no door, you could simply flick all the switches one at a time until one of them turns on the light inside, then go in. If there is a door, then I’m not sure.

9) Honestly my first thought on this one is that if John and Mary live in the same city why is he mailing her a ring? They’re in love, odds are they know each other’s addresses. Wouldn’t it be simplest to meet and give it to her in person?

Well, well Amanda, you seem to have filled out everything at length but I seem to have missed your current occupation on the form. I've gathered from other questions that you work in an office of some sort but I would be curious to know what sort of business you align yourself with. I find it very telling about a person with what kind of work they choose to pursue such as people that flock to retail have a tendency toward but the color and patterns while fast food members are more sight and smell. Very fun to decipher on a dull day in the office. While you do not address all the questions I see you still put forth the effort to answer what you could with some rationalization on your end of the spectrum and I can respect that. For any relationship whether it be romantic or platonic requires some form of communication in order to function effectively. That being said I find it very refreshing to find someone closer to my height as you will find that being over 6 foot does come with its disadvantages. Finding clothes, walking through crowds when you're trying to remain unseen, attempting to kiss someone well below my height and closer to my chest. I will say that biology has never been one of my stronger suits as opposed to Earth Sciences (since Sherlock was keen on exploring the great wilderness as a pirate and all) but would be amendable to glossing over one of your favorite bits of the subject over coffee or pastry at any time that you feel you are available. I cannot promise this would be a quick romance but what does it matter if we enjoy our company along the way?
