Things I've learned about Ajax this week:

Heracles was his fairy godfather who blessed him with invulnerability

His myth of invulnerability predates Achilles'

Subsequently one of the earlier myths regarding his death was that Paris shot him in the heel with an Apollo-improved arrow

Other myths involved the Trojans simply burying him given they couldn't hurt him otherwise. If you can't stab a man into the Underworld, maybe just dig him door, shove him in, and block the way behind him.

His body being interred rather than cremated in the prevailing myths of his death by suicide might be a nod to that older version of his death

His method of suicide--burying the hilt of his sword in a mound of earth and then throwing himself on it--may also be a nod to earth being the only thing that can kill him. In this case, it killed him by wielding a sword.

#actually I've learned quite a bit more than this #but these were some of the fun ones #telamonian ajax #ajax the greater #it's funny I'd read a lot of essays about his death and had somehow missed this #like there is a lot of debate over why he was buried rather than cremated #I think it was Sophocles who suggested it was a punishment for the whole cow thing #but the cow thing wasn't part of every myth and Sophocles invented his motive for killing the cows #and interring bodies wasn't seen as a punishment #so yeah the idea that it's just like the only way to keep an invulnerable man down like just put him in the underworld and block his exit #tagamemnon

What are your thoughts on Big Ajax?

I love him. It might have a lot to do with my friend Baejax loving him (I feel like she's the resident Ajax fan around here) but through our discussions I really got to appreciate him as well. I feel like he's an underappreciated and often misunderstood character that really deserved better than what he got (he's the one who should have been given Achilles' armour after he died instead of Odysseus, and I'll die on that hill 😤)

I really like that in the Iliad he's described as fierce, powerful and protective, a man of few words but whose words are listened to and respected. I find the fact that he, Achilles and Patroclus grew up together on Pelion in versions of the myth really endearing, and also the fact that he was there in the embassy scene in the Iliad. Achilles was pretty much ready to up and leave Troy until Ajax spoke, and then he seemed to reconsider his stance, which shows that among the Achaeans, Ajax is someone Achilles really trusts. And then when he fights tooth and nail to protect Patroclus' body 😭 this scene always gets me when I reach it during my rereads. Big bro Ajax covering for his younger cousin one last time 🥲

The lineup up top was actually an impulse addition and I was lazy with it I c/p the headshots shhhh and Odysseus at the end and even MORE of an impulse addition, but yes. Mostly here for heights/body-build comparisons, circa Iliad-era. (From left to right: Patroklos, Achilles, Ajax, Paris, Aeneas, Hektor, Agamemnon, Menelaos and the rat bastard man extraordinaire Odysseus. Tallest is Aeneas at 193 cm ; shortest is Odysseus at 158 cm thereabouts.)

The headshots I drew imagining them to be from the start of the war, landing at Troy, so that's why everyone looks cleaner compared to the lineup!

Honey, what.

That's. Um. Not what happens in Sophocles' work.

The main reason Ajax killed himself was due to his madness provoked by Athena. After Agamemnon decided that it was Odysseus who would keep Achilles' armour instead of Ajax (the greater), he got angry and planned to kill Odysseus, Agamemnon and a couple more, as a revenge. Athena made him see things and go mad, so Ajax killed a bunch of sheeps instead. When he got out of that trance, he felt horrible and ashamed for various reasons and he stabbed himself.

It's a tragedy. Yes, Odysseus probably lied in order to gain Agamemnon's favour, or Agamemnon simply didn't like Ajax's lineage for reasons, but that doesn't mean that they're "at fault" for Ajax killing himself. That's not the point of the work.

I know Odysseus isn't the best person in the world in many ways, but... This? Of all things? It was him who insisted in burying Ajax, so.
