Polites died believing that the world is kind, and yet his death contributes to Odysseus deciding to become a monster. Absolutely devastating

"I see a song of past romance, I see the sacrifice of man, I see portrayal of betrayal and a brother's final stand. I see you on the brink of death, I see you draw your final breath, I see a man who gets to make it home alive but it's no longer you."

I hate to say it, but Polites' death was even sadder than I first thought. Not only did he, Odysseus's best friend, die a horrible death, but his beliefs died with him. His song was all about convincing Odysseus to great the world with open arms, to be kind to his foes, but his death causes Odysseus to not only abandon those beliefs, but move in the complete opposite direction.
This is reinforced by "No longer you", with Tiresias telling Odysseus that the man who returns home isn't him anymore. That's because the old Odysseus, the one who believed in kindness and open arms, died with Polites, but the new Odysseus from "Monster" who believes in ruthlessness, in making it home no matter the cost, survives. He doesn't just become the monster, he destroys the other parts of him who believed what Polites did. In other words, Open arms Ody dies, but Ruthlessness is mercy Ody lives.
Sorry for the ramble but those are just my thoughts and interpretation of the Underworld Saga.

Listening to "Full Speed Ahead" after listening to "The Underworld" repeatedly is so devastating, especially when it comes to Polites.
When Odysseus sings his name in "Full Speed Ahead," you can HEAR the smile and joy in his voice on "Polites!" That's his best friend!
And then there's "The Underworld," where Odysseus says his name twice. When he first sees him, he says it gently, almost like he wasn't expecting to see him again. And then after Polites disappears, having sung of greeting the world with open arms to the end, Odysseus says his name again, so quiet, broken, and full of grief. That was his best friend.

Well, Jorge Rivera Herrans…
You are paying for my therapy.
Okay so here are my opinions on the songs within the latest saga.
The Underworld: Fucking CHILLS. When I told you I shrieked when I heard Polites’ voice, I mean I SHRIEKED. Hearing him singing his last thoughts (Aka; OPEN ARMS.) absolutely shattered me into a million pieces. And to rub salt into the wound, ANTICLEA. ANTICLEA WAS SINGING OUT HER LAST THOUGHTS BEFORE TAKING HER OWN LIFE. I AM CRYING. “ODYSSEUS WHEN YOU COME HOME, I’LL BE WAITING” 😭 (AND SHE’S PLAYED BY HIS ACTUAL MOTHER?!)
I had high standards for this song and it broke me. Well done, Captain Jalapeño. 🫡
No Longer You: Mason has a BEAUTIFUL voice. And the emotion mixed into each and every single word Odysseus had to say gave me chills. And the fact the man Tiresias was speaking of was HIM??? I had to give it a second listen to realize it wasn’t Antinous he was speaking of. I also liked Mason’s delivery as Tiresias. You could tell in the song he was overwhelmed with all those prophecies. And the instrumental really topped it off for me with the way it spiraled!!!
Monster (Rawr rawr rawr 🦖): MONSTER. MONSTER WAS A ROLLERCOASTER.
I know I’ve been rambling about the Emotions in Ody’s voice but oh my god, THIS. THE BROKENNESS IN HIS VOICE HAD ME IN A CHOKEHOLD!!! AND THE DANGER MOTIF??? THIS SONG WAS BEAUTIFUL.
WELL DONE JAY.
