we don’t talk enough about the fact that there was a period of time when bilbo was in possession of the one ring, the arkenstone, and a mithril shirt. that’s one hell of a collection and he was most excited about an acorn…

Thorin Oakenshield
The hobbit is one of my fav books, but I really really liked thorins look in the movies so I decided to draw this version instead. He was supposed to be holding a either an acorn or the arkenstone but I couldn’t decide so he’s holding nothing. Also peep the tiny Smaug over his ear:)

It's so tragic that what seemed to be able to heal Thorin from the dragon sickness was affection. I think it's a powerful metaphor for how insecurities destroy people's sense of self-worth and how sometimes just a bit of kindness is able to help.
Thorin lost his status as a prince as a child (according to the book - in the movies he was a young adult, still a young dwarf.) He never got a chance to prove his authority over his people. What he'd witnessed was a fall of what his ancestors had built. I always interpreted the Arkenstone as Thorin's insecurities over his position - he never ruled before, his whole life was based on promises of getting Erebor back. So when he finally achieves that, he's immediately scared of what's happening. He has no idea how to be a king. Arkenstone is the symbol of the power of the line of Durin. His grandfather had it, so Thorin wants it too - to be like his ancestors. To prove himself. For him, owning the Arkenstone equals the confirmation of being the King under the Mountain.
His insecurities devour him. He immediately starts suspecting his closest friends of trying to steal the Arkenstone, aka not recognising him as the righteous ruler and trying to take over Erebor. He has the whole damn mountain, but he's so focused on this one gem because it's the physical embodiment of his right to rule.
And then there is the acorn scene. Bilbo's honesty and pure heart moves Thorin. He sees Bilbo as someone who could never be a threat to his power. Can you imagine a hobbit-king? No, it's not in their nature. Bilbo desires peace, something Thorin doesn't know. And this devotion to peace, to living without fighting for power, calms him down. Light returns to his eyes - both metaphorically and literally, since the lighting focuses on his face when he listens to Bilbo's joyful chatter. For a moment he's healed as he interacts with someone of gentle heart, someone who simply wanted to share an exciting and adorable thing with him.
Thorin's pain is in his loneliness and insecurities. Being shown genuine affection and kindness, even in such a simple form as Bilbo's dreams about planting the acorn in Bag End, were able to bring him back to his mind. Who knows - maybe if they got more time together, the Arkenstone would lose its power over his mind?

I truly will never ever forget how tenderly and how adoringly Thorin looks at Bilbo in this scene. Bilbo’s happy with just his little acorn to bring home. An acorn that will grow into an oak tree. That he’s going to keep in his garden at home and let it grow.
It feels like Bilbo is just too shy and reserved to come out and tell Thorin just how he feels about him. How special they all are so he tells Thorin in the only way he knows how. With the subtlety of a Hobbit. That he’s happy to plant an acorn in his garden, to have that oak tree there with him always. A piece of Thorin with him always-whether Thorin is actually there or not.
And the look that Thorin gives him just confirms that he understands. That Bilbo’s reserved message comes across clear as crystal to him, he’s extending an olive branch, an opportunity to him. Bilbo is telling him that he’d be happy to always have him there. And just when Bilbo is about to say something to him directly, mustering his courage.
Dwalin interrupts them. And he doesn’t have the chance to tell him anything, and he watches as Thorin’s warm expression completely melts off his face as he’s reminded of his greed. Of what he would be giving up to be with Bilbo, and the gold still has a hold on him. So Thorin says nothing to him. And Bilbo sees for himself just how tight a grip the Arkenstone and the gold has on him.

Goldsickness collection: the recs!
Dragonsickness is a theme I love, it resonates with me with very much, and I had a great time reading fics to make this collection. Here are the eight I love the most and that make up this 376-pages-book.
As Befits a King by Ladysisyphus (explicit, 4,7k)
It was all too much to think about, so he thought about Thorin's hands.
This fic strikes a good balance between angst, hope and hot possessive sex. Thorin is teetering on the edge of madness here, despite Bilbo's best efforts.
Chains of Gold by Plooby (explicit, 4k)
He had not been in the king's chambers since their arrival, not since his youth, and the massive gilt doors opened only with groaning reluctance under his hands.
This is actually a sequel to the fic above, the authors worked on a series together. It's just as brilliant, hot and well-written. You can see the old Thorin under the madness.
What was promised by Paranoid_fridge (unrated, 6,9k)
Perhaps Bilbo is being selfish. But even though he knows that Thorin's mind has grown clouded from cursed gold, he is unwilling to give up on the intimacy they share. And when Thorin - with his mind still bespelled - asks for his hand, Bilbo does not decline either. With armies before the gate and a battle to come, things must come to a head.
Interesting concept: Thorin and Bilbo get married while Thorin is dragonsick. It raises the question of consent. The battles scenes are great and Bilbo is a badass.
Lay your troubles down by Avelera (explicit, 24k)
An extended version of "the acorn scene." Bilbo sees his chance to snap Thorin out of his madness, and takes it.
This fic is a great, slow deconstruction of Thorin's illness by Bilbo. The author goes all the way to the bedrock of the character to start healing him, and there are setbacks and false starts (which is what I prefer in fics where Thorin heals).
Covet by Pomgore (explicit, 33,3k)
"How is he?” Bilbo asked softly, trying to keep the worry from his voice. Balin’s face went dark, and he sipped thoughtfully on his tea. “... It’s slow, but his fever has begun to break,” he said. “Still, it’s the worst I’ve seen him. I think it’s the worst he’s ever had.” ~~~ Thorin recovers from both physical and mental afflictions. As with all recovery, the path of healing is non-linear and agonizingly difficult.
This is also a fantastic healing fic (this one post-canon) that treats dragonsickness as a mental illness, with relapses in the recovery. I loved that portrayal, I recognized myself in it. And the fic scratches some specific itches of mine.
Red Lines in Dark Stone by Elenothar (mature, 4,3k)
After BOFA Thorin is wrecked by guilt, convinced that most of the bloodshed is his fault (see: the arkenstone debacle). As king and responsible for Erebor, he decides that he will do anything to stop himself from succumbing to the gold sickness again, even if it means hurting himself. When his family and friends find out, they don't react as he'd expected them to.
Self-harm is another theme that's dear to me. This is an excellent portrayal of self-harm, the author got it perfectly right. It's good to read a post-canon fic where, even when he's past the goldsickness, Thorin still suffers its consequences.
Of Monsters and Men by MsThunderFrost (mature, 1,3k)
Thorin will protect Bilbo from everything. Even if that includes himself.
Look, I love dark and twisted stuff, so this fic was an absolute bitter candy for me, I dig it. Heed the warnings!
Burning with a magnificent madness by EmilianaDarling (mature, 7,3k)
Thorin’s madness had been like a dam bursting; fast and brutal and incomprehensible, like water rushing out and devastating everything in its path. For Bilbo, it’s more like a slow trickle over the course of a lifetime. Out of sight and out of mind - and almost imperceptible until he’s already drowning.
This is an incredibly moving study of madness in Thorin's and Bilbo's lives, caused by the gold and the One ring. Bilbo's life is really tragic and it's heartbreaking to see him sink into addiction to the ring. Prepare tissues.

The Arkenstone being a Silmaril <<< the Arkenstone being a dragon egg for no logical reason except Bilbo secretly taking care of a baby dragon in Erebor post-BOTFA in an everyone lives AU where Thorin struggles with his duties as King vs his love for Bilbo fuels my soul. Bonus points if Bilbo names the dragon Acorn.

They had just reclaimed the mountain, not knowing what laid before them just yet. Thorin had been deep beneath the mountain skimming through the gold, stepping upon the heaps of hills. The once treasure hoard of King Thror now belonged to his grandson, and would go down to his nephews as he had no children of his own. But that was not why he was down here, no. Not at all. The dwarf king was looking for something very specific, a white gem: the Arkenstone. It was known as 'The King's Jewel' and the birthright to the dwarven folk, or so it was said. But the brunette would not see to reason that the jewel was to be for his kin, that it was the right of all and not just the royal line of Durin. The madness was loud and clear seen in those crystal blue eyes that Balin had come to know over the years. His friend and kin was slowly descending to a dark hole that all were afraid he may not make out of.
Time passed and there had still been no sign of the Arkenstone, such news was not a pleasant thing to hear as it only sparked more of Thorin's ire and anger. His shouts to those who had volunteered to go looking for it echoed within the mountain's caverns, the mere insistence pushing Dwalin and the others to look further, deeper. The rustling clinking sounds of the coins hitting one another as they were moved, pushed one way then another to be sift through as if it would be difficult to find such a famous gem. Thorin was angry - seething, almost to a degree and still swearing that his believed birthright was sti buried beneath all of this treasure. He swore that if need be the treasure could be hauled out just to locate the blasted thing. Was Bilbo certain that it could not be found?
Beside him stood the only other one he felt that could be trusted; Edelgard. His head tilted as he looked to her before his gaze shifted to those trying to locate the Arkenstone, moving to step away from her and Bilbo both while muttering to himself.
If things were to be done the correct way then he'd have to do it himself, he figured. The dwarf was not quite thrilled but things had to be done, especially if he wanted the heirloom found. About an hour or so later the royal returned only to find the burglar and Edelgard gone. A thick brow raised as he took in the area for a moment then as he heard soft voices, Thorin stepped forward into the hallway. He could have sworn he saw something with light flashing in the halfling's hand. Thinking he'd been lied to and that Bilbo was holding something of a gem in his grasp the dwarf stomped forward "What do you have?" Came the demand, another step forward and up the Hobbit went in a state of worry. "In your hand!" Thorin called put stepping front of both Edelgard and Bilbo. Clouded blues looked to the hobbit first then to the woman, back to Bilbo within a span of a few minutes.
It was then that said halfling slowly opened his hand uncurling fingers to show an acorn in hand. That had not been what Thorin saw only a mere moment or two ago. The royal's gaze lingered upon the two briefly for a few moments then Bilbo began speaking saying he'd picked up the acorn in Beorn's garden while they stayed there and recouped. The brunette's eyes looked down upon the acorn the corner's of his lips curling into a small smile, noting that that it was significant in a way since the hobbit had carried it all this way, but it wasn't really worth much. At least, not in the dwarf king's eyes. No words had been spoken in the few minutes that passed until Dwalin had announced his presence calling his leader's name to which said leader frowned.
"Call everyone to the gate. To the gate!" Thorin then made to move but stopped a moment as Bilbo walked ahead, reaching out to stop Edelgard. Waiting until it was just the two of them the dwarf shifted his gaze "If I find that either of you are lying, there will be consequences.." he said, brows furrowing "And I need you to tell me the truth, because that will tell me in the end if you're either with me or against me." And with that, the brunette stomped off to make way for the ramparts.

Returning Home Chapter 18- Thorin Oakenshield x OC
Tumblr media
Thorin Oakenshield x Bellarose Baggins
Description: As Thorin falls deeper and deeper into his Dragon Sickness (which Bellarose learns it's called) he begins making rash decisions - like preparing to go to war after he goes back on his words.
Word Count: 2.1k
Tumblr media
Later that day Bellarose and Bilbo found Balin in a lone and quiet corner far from the treasure hall. The girl became concerned when she noticed his deep breathing. It was as if he was trying to calm himself down after crying just as she had done a few days prior.
“Dragon Sickness,” he spoke in a sad tone before either of them could say anything. “I’ve seen it before. That look. That terrible need. It is a fierce and jealous love. It sent his grandfather mad.”
“Balin, if- if Thorin...had the Arkenstone…” he trailed off softly, making the Dwarf look at Bilbo in surprise as he continued. “If it was found…would it help?”
“That stone crowns all. It is the summit of this great wealth, bestowing power upon he who bears it. Will it stay his madness? No, lad, I fear it would make it worse. Perhaps it is best that it remains lost.”
He raised his eyebrows at the Hobbit, and Bellarose found herself mimicking that as she faced her brother. That was the second time he’d brought up scenarios about what would happen if/when the Arkenstone was discovered. She was starting to grow suspicious that her dear brother knew more than he was letting on.
Tumblr media
Bellarose walked around the kingdom in search of her brother. She wanted to know what it was that Bilbo was trying to hide once and for all. The Arkenstone, perhaps? No. Bilbo was smarter than that. She had the distinct feeling that Thorin wouldn’t exactly be happy to discover that Bilbo was hiding the one thing he desired the most.
“What is that?” She suddenly heard Thorin yell from an adjoining hallway, making her freeze mid step. “In your hand!” She rushed to the entryway of the hallway and peeked her head out, watching as Bilbo rose from the bench he sat on when he saw Thorin striding over to him at a rapid pace.
“It- It’s nothing.” He stuttered.
“Show me,” the Dwarf demanded, looking like he was ready to blow up.
“It…” Bilbo trailed off, then ultimately held out his hand. Bellarose had to peek out a bit more to see that it was an acorn that laid in her brother’s palm.
“I picked it up in Beorn’s garden,” he explained.
“You’ve carried it all this way,” Thorin muttered in surprise, his anger melting away just as quickly as it appeared.
“I’m gonna plant it in my garden, in Bag End.” The Dwarf smiled fondly at Bilbo upon hearing his words.
“That’s a poor price to take back to the Shire,” he mentioned softly.
“One day it'll grow,” the Hobbit explained in the same tone. “And everytime I look at it, I’ll remember. Remember everything that happened, the good, the bad. And how lucky I am that I made it home.” The two shared a smile, which in turn brought a smile to Bellarose’s face. And for a fleeting moment she saw the Dwarf she fell in love with - the kind one she’d known for the last few months. It was quickly broken when Dwalin suddenly walked up to them.
“Thorin, survivors...from Laketown. They are streaming into Dale. There’s hundreds of them.” Just like that, Thorin’s smile faded into a stern, uncompromising face.
“Call everyone to the gate,” he instructed, stalking off with Dwalin following closely. “To the gate! Now!”
Bellarose was quick to hide behind the doorway when he passed to make sure he didn’t see her. Once he was gone she stepped out and walked with Bilbo to the gate. By the time they got there the Dwarves were already beginning to block up the broken entrance using rocks of all sizes. They carried said rocks both by hand and with the help of various pulleys and other machines.
“I want this fortress made safe by sunup,” Thorin demanded. “This mountain was hard won - I will not see it taken again.”
“The people of Laketown have nothing,” Kili protested (saying exactly what Bellarose was thinking), staring at his uncle in surprise. “They came to us in need. They have lost everything.” Thorin strided up to him angrily.
“Do not tell me what they have lost. I know well enough their hardship. Those who have lived through dragonfire should rejoice. They have much to be grateful for.” He looked out at the city of Dale after speaking. Bellarose followed his gaze to the city and noticed quite a few fires being lit by the people. She then nearly jumped out of her skin when the Dwarf turned and shouted at the rest of the Company.
“More stone! Bring more stone to the gate!”
After a while of blocking off the gate (with Bellarose staying mostly off to the side as she wasn’t strong enough to carry rocks that a Dwarf could carry) the Dwarves were forced to stop when Thorin strided towards them.
“Come on!” Everyone laid down their tools and picked up their weapons. They followed him up the makeshift stairs they’d created from the blockage until they reached a platform they built at the top of the gate, creating a vantage point over the plains in front of the gate.
The Hobbit girl gasped quietly when she realized there were hundreds (probably more) of Elven guards filling up Dale along with the people of Laketown. Her gaze tore away from them when she noticed Bard riding up the path to the gate on a horse, stopping in front of the gate.
“Hail Thorin, son of Thrain! We are glad to find you alive beyond hope,” he called out with a smile.
“Why do you come to the gates of the King under the Mountain armed for war?” Thorin questioned rather than answering.
“Why does the King under the Mountain fence himself in?” The Man shot back. “Like a robber in his hole.”
“Perhaps it is because I am expecting to be robbed.”
“My Lord, we have not come to rob you, but to seek fair settlement,” Bard said in a much kinder tone this time. “Will you not speak with me?
Thorin nodded, stepping away from the platform and down the stairs. Bard took the time to dismount his horse and crossed the bridge in front of the gate. Bellarose watched for a moment, then moved to follow Thorin. She snuck down to the blockade, stopping just a few feet away from Thorin as he and Bard spoke through a hole in the blockage.
“I’m listening,” was all Thorin said.
“On behalf of the people of Laketown, I ask that you honor your pledge,” Bard responded. “A share of the treasure so that they might rebuild their lives.”
“I will not treat with any man while an armed host lies before my door,” the Dwarf all but sneered.
“That armed host will attack this mountain, if we do not come to terms.”
“Your threats do not sway me.”
“What of your conscience?” The Man shot back, growing frustrated. “Does it not tell you our cause is just?! My people offered you help. And in return you brought upon them only ruin and death!”
“When did the men of Laketown come to our aid,” Thorin said, growing angry. “But for the promise of rich reward?”
“A bargain was struck!”
“A bargain? What choice did we have but to barter our birthright for blankets and food? To ransom our future in exchange for our freedom? You call that a fair trade? Tell me, Bard the Dragonslayer…” he trailed off slowly. “Why should I honor such terms?”
“Because you gave us your word. Does that mean nothing?” Rather than answer, Thorin turned away from the hole. He leaned against the blockade for a moment, looking tired and weary for a moment. Then his eyes landed on the Dwarves and Bilbo, who Bellarose hadn’t even realized stood behind her until Thorin noticed them, and his weariness was replaced with stone cold indifference.
“Be gone, ere arrow fly!” Bellarose’s jaw dropped in shock as Bard hit the blockade angrily, then once she heard him ride away she strided over to the Dwarf.
“Thorin, are you mad?” She exclaimed worriedly. “You cannot go to war.”
“This does not concern you,” Thorin responded simply, which angered her.
“Excuse me, but just in case you haven’t noticed, there is an army of Elves out there,” she snapped frustratedly. “And not to mention several hundred angry fishermen. We- We are in fact outnumbered.” She was surprised when Thorin turned to her with a knowing smile and that same damn mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Not for much longer.”
“What… What does that mean?” Bilbo asked hesitantly, standing beside his sister.
“It means, Master Baggins, you should never underestimate Dwarves,” he answered before turning to look at the rest of the Company. “We have reclaimed Erebor. Now we defend it!” With that he strode away, leaving Bellarose, Bilbo and Balin looking distressed.
Tumblr media
“Well, aren’t you a handsome bunch,” Bellarose joked lightheartedly as she walked into the armory of Erebor, where the Dwarves were suiting up for battle. Her comment earned several laughs as they glanced at her.It felt like it had been so long since they shared a laugh, so it made her smile as she walked over to Fili, who was having trouble strapping his armor.
“Here, let me help,” she said, grabbing the leather strap of his breastplate and beginning to tie it to his backplate.
“Thanks Bella,” the Dwarf responded with a small smile. The girl returned it as she continued to work, then she noticed something out of the corner of her eye. Bilbo and Thorin stood in a hallway speaking so quietly she couldn’t quite hear, though they both had rather intense expressions.
“What’re they doing?” She asked curiously. The blonde hummed thoughtfully before following her gaze.
“Don’t know, but it looks urgent,” he responded simply. The girl nodded, deciding to leave it at that as she continued her task. Once she finished Fili suddenly turned to her.
“Can I ask you something, Bellarose?” She was taken aback by the question, but still nodded.
“Oh, uh, sure.”
“And you will answer honestly?”
“Depends on the question,” she half joked.
“Do you love my uncle?” Bellarose knew for a fact that if she was holding something, it would be on the floor now. Her cheeks heated up at his (rather direct) question and she couldn’t stop herself from stuttering as she attempted to figure out how to answer, though she was cut off when the Dwarf laughed quietly.
“It is okay if the answer is yes, I am not asking in a hateful way,” he muttered, which admittedly eased her. “I have simply noticed certain traits over the course of this quest. When you worry about him, you remind me of my mother. She’s the exact same way with him, though I believe your reasoning differs from hers.” That made the girl laugh.
“Yes, I will admit I do not do it because I care about him like a brother,” she said softly, nodding afterwards.
“That is wonderful!” He exclaimed quietly, pulling her into a hug.
“It is?” She asked confusedly.
“Bellarose, I have seen the way my uncle acts around you compared to everyone else,” he explained happily, holding her by the shoulders. “I see the way he looks at you while your back is turned. He speaks so highly of you when you end up the topic of conversation, and he has nothing but praises about your progress in swordfighting. Not to mention how happy it makes him that you are fluent in Khuzdul. It is obvious that he loves you.” His words only made her blush harder. She hadn’t even been aware of any of this, which was surprising because she was usually so diligent.
“I…I didn’t even know,” she said softly, a smile involuntarily forming on her face.
“Perhaps you may have a chance,” Fili mentioned with a small smile.
“Maybe,” she agreed quietly, glancing back at Thorin. All that they’d previously discussed left when they noticed the dark look he always seemed to have in his eyes. This wasn’t the same Thorin, she reminded herself.
“But, if things continue as they are now, I fear that chance may be thrown out. For both him and me.”
“Fili, come on,” Kili interrupted, resting a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “We have to go.” The older Durin glanced at him, then at Bellarose, then at Kili again and nodded.
“Alright, I’m coming,” he responded simply, following his brother out along with the rest of the Dwarves, leaving Bellarose alone with her thoughts, which she wasn’t quite sure was a good thing.

Bagginshield notes, "The Battle of Five Armies" edition
Continuing AGAIN my thoughts on one Burglar and one King Under the Mountain from where/when it seems they fell in love and onward.
"An Unexpected Journey" notes here.
"Desolation of Smaug" notes here.
(Aaaand quick note again - I only have access to the theatrical editions, not the extended, so if there's anything I should know please please please say so.)
~
- We don't get very much of them in the beginning of the movie, since everyone is (understandably) focused on Smaug's attack. They are technically together, but with the rest of the company that made it to Erebor, focused on what's happening. Just like the beginning of last movie, again, that's A Lot. Especially since Thorin's focus is almost entirely on gazing back at the mountain and being further dragged into the gold sickness. Which Bilbo is the first one to notice - he steps aside, and looks over/after him at one point, while the others are still focused on the attack.
Also, Thorin is still paying enough attention to hear Bilbo and the others confirm that Smaug is dead, and that other people will be coming for the mountain, and peaces the fuck back inside faster than anyone at that news.
- And once the rest of their company (those in Laketown) catches up, Bilbo is the one who rushes to tell the others, stop them, from coming in - noting that a sickness is upon Thorin (that it's not his fault) and immediately insists they ALL leave, knowing that getting Thorin away from the gold might help.
(I also feel like it's REAL important that he's already started having ring-addictive feelings himself, before this, so he recognizes it in his love. Good job, writers.)
- The flashback with Smaug warning Bilbo what the Arkenstone would do to Thorin - "...if only to see Oakenshield suffer. Watch it destroy him. Watch it corrupt his heart and drive him mad." is super dupes telling!! Especially paired with HOW we get that information. Him pacing outside, alone, making all the most conflicted/determined faces in the history of Hobbitdom. He cares, so much - he still loves him, so much, and above all he wants to protect him from what Smaug warned about, which he believes, since he's seen evidence that there IS a problem since Thorin first set foot in the mountain, got distracted by the gold and drew a sword on him.
- And even with that, he returns to Thorin's side at the throne - AND consults Balin, who is closest to him otherwise (also also significant that the two of them are the ones to actually discuss the situation - those closest to him, emotionally), as to what would happen if the Arkenstone were found. Literally, would it help? He trusts Balin with the implication that he has found it, and they, and as those closest to him - those who care most about the man, not the King - agree to leave it lost.
AND Balin describes the gold-sickness as a "fierce and jealous love." Above all other loves.
Above him.
(I am definitely in camp Balin-Knows-What's-Up after these rewatches, let me tell you.)
- ALSO, the acorn scene. As soon as Thorin realizes that Bilbo doesn't have the stone in his hands - and sees the acorn, and hears Bilbo talk about WHY he took it... he becomes himself again, if just for a moment. And there is NOTHING platonic about those glances exchanged. Nevermind the fact that acorns grow OAK trees, and while Thorin places little importance on plant life in general, he still very likely knows that (so who is this acorn supposed to stand for, hmm?).
They're interrupted, but I feel like whatever Bilbo was gonna say next had nothing to do with the Arkenstone either, especially with that in mind. That wouldn't have fit with the tone of the moment - since Bilbo had just said that the tree that grows from the acorn will remind him how glad he is that he made it home..... I think that he was gonna invite Thorin to come back to the Shire WITH him.
So.
There's that.
- And when Thorin refuses, to Bard, to honor their agreement with Laketown, Bilbo is the one who immediately calls him out on it - again, harkening to the very married/Sacred Marriage vibes they had in how they dealt with Bard in the first place (the idea of working together, equals, able to speak equally) and how Bilbo pointed out that they were supposed to wait for Gandalf before going to the door.
And Thorin does call him "Master Baggins" again, in front of the company, and in focus of "defending" Erebor and its riches, his people's birthright (though of course he's under gold thrall, still).
- And then again, in the mithril scene.
Which of course, has all the bridal implications that have been mentioned by so many other people already - and considering that Bilbo has to undress to put it on and Thorin walks around him, oogling him, once he does, more intimate implications, too (that part noticed by my Wife, btw). All on top of the fact that even though he is suspicious of everyone, up until this moment, he still gives Bilbo something to protect him. Something to keep him safe.
Followed immediately by the fact that a) he believes he is betrayed, but he doesn't think it's Bilbo, after all - believes it couldn't possibly be him, and b) when Bilbo tries to stand up for the people of Laketown, he tells him this gold is OURS, after having implicated all of his kin in the theft of the Arkenstone.
He wouldn't include them in that, if they were betrayer.
OURS means him and Bilbo. Which of course, means that even in his illness, he wants Bilbo to stay with him after all is done.
And that after Bilbo already mentioned that their honor was tied together, in having BOTH agreed to give wealth to Laketown in exchange for their help. Again, placing himself as Thorin's equal in consideration. Which, even though its a painful moment, is accented by the now armored company physically walking between them, separating them. Making clear that a) Thorin wants him by his side, but only in agreement (yaaaaaaay magical illness), and b) the repercussions of that disagreement wouldn't be for Bilbo to be returned to the company, made lesser in that way. No, he'd still be his equal, but no longer with him.
(Fastest marriage to divorce arc EVER.)
- Which of course, leads to Bilbo deciding to give the Arkenstone to Bard (and Thranduil), to leverage for what they were supposed to get in the first place. Which seems to be about honor again, even though this whole time he's been working to keep the Arkenstone away from Thorin. This makes it feel like he's given up, in that respect - he won't be able to keep it from him forever, so perhaps, some good might come out of it, after all? I can't believe he thought that Thorin was lost to the illness, entirely. There was so much hope, before... but, that WAS before. He now sees Thorin sacrificing his own honor - part of what attracted him to him in the first place, and vice versa - for the gold sickness. So maybe he does think it's too late, and is just trying to mitigate the damage.
Actually, he makes that clear. He gives the stone to Bard and Thranduil not just to get Thorin to honor his agreement, but to spare him and the others from obliteration, in the face of the army outside. I also think, based on how he speaks of "Dwarves," he is still speaking of Thorin first and foremost. "I'm not doing it for you" - I think he's hoping, at least in part, that this WILL help snap Thorin out of it. Remind him of his obligations, his honor, himself.
And he establishes to them - and plans to establish to Thorin, later, as we see - that he took the stone as his share of the treasure. Satisfying his own honor, and hopefully remaining worthy of Thorin's respect, even if he can't forgive the betrayal.
- AND he tells Gandalf that he's not afraid of Thorin. Which we've seen before - he never has been. Not even when he held him at swordpoint. Not when he yelled at him before the hug, at the end of the first movie. So, more Sacred Marriage vibes. Even in the betrayal and angst.
- Which, of course, all falls apart when he does reveal that he is the one who gave them the stone (which, again, honorable and honest upfront, which he knows Thorin as he truly is would resonate with. Appreciate. Respond to). He calls him out, again, on how he's changed, using that equal footing - "The Dwarf I met in Bag End (in my HOME) would never have gone back on his word. Would never have doubted the loyalty of his kin!" Only for Thorin, in his pain at the betrayal and his sickness, to deny ALL feelings for him - "You have no claim over ME" (emphasis mine, but COME ON) - and then to visit violence upon him (though whether he would have really been able to throw him off the rampart remains to be seen).
He has done everything he could, in moments where it seemed like his feelings might be inconvenient, might harm the quest, to stamp them down and focus on his people. Only to be hurt, after all. Have given his love away - since he did allow himself several moments of letting himself feel, letting their affection be obvious - just to be wounded, just for his birthright to have been betrayed.
I think Bilbo is right - if Thorin had been in his right mind, this WOULD have been the way to get through to him. But he's not, and as such, he can only respond from the pain of it. And Bilbo was SO sure that it would work, that Thorin would never hurt him. It's SO plain on his face, when he tells the others to throw him off the rampart. So what choice does he have, when Gandalf interrupts, but to flee as soon as Thorin lets him go. Only to get caught up in the battle immediately, which is a great distraction from having to process what just happened.
And on that note, the look on Thorin's face when Gandalf does call him out on his unkingliness - in that moment, he lets go of Bilbo. Lets him go, unable to argue - just for that moment - that he's not living up to what he's been leaning on, bred for, sacrificing himself for his whole life. That almost gets through to him. Only for him to get caught up in the righteousness of his kindred, Dain's army, arriving, proving him "correct" and just all over again.
Not having to process what he's just done, not having to accept it, or let himself worry about Bilbo again.
- And Dwalin calls him out again, later - Bilbo's courage having finally given his kin the courage to stand up to him (and AGAIN, what better quality in a consort??) - and brings him back to that, that he is not being worthy of his people, but also that he was worthy already - King already - as himself. To which he replies "Do not speak to me as if I were still.... (**voice breaking**) Thorin Oakenshield. I am your KING!" He is leaning SO HEAVILY on the role he's expected to play, while also bolstered and chained by the gold sickness. In the face of that, in the face of accomplishing the mountain, and getting the wealth back, the Arkenstone back (theoretically), Thorin the man has ceased to exist.
Which, of course, makes me wonder how much what he did to Bilbo is weighing into that outlook. And how much easier it is to believe that the actions of a King are infallible, without question, when the feelings of the man beneath don't matter. And how much of THAT plays into his threat to Dwalin, telling him to get out before he kills him.
He knows, in his illness, he is capable of that because he's already tried.
AND in the montage of him dealing with his illness, having to pull himself out of it, the "ours" moment about the gold is repeated, and followed up with him remembering Bilbo calling him out, "You are changed, Thorin. Is this treasure truly worth your honor?" That, and his memory of Gandalf calling him to the quest, of his own name, and the support of his people, and his own insistence - "I am not my grandfather" (that specifically overlaid with Bilbo's quote). Though it's about much more than just them - Bilbo's words, and what he'd hoped for them, are instrumental in this emotional break.
And he only breaks free of it by literally rejecting his role by throwing his crown on the ground. Removing himself from it. Restoring the man, who is who mattered most.
Thorin the man was the true king, after all.
- AND as soon as Bilbo hears the horns playing out from the mountain (thanks Bombur!!) he KNOWS Thorin has been restored to himself. Says so, out loud, by whispering his name.
And at this point, or up until this point, they both must believe they've been as good as lost to the other - which Thorin has obviously stamped down again, but he saw Bilbo flee into the army, into the battle, and as much as he knows he can handle his shit, that's a LOT of shit to handle. And Bilbo had to give up on Thorin, at least a bit, in order to flee at all. So this moment is where they turn back to each other, again, even just a little. Even though they're still apart.
- AND of those that are separated from them in the battle, Bilbo is the first to notice that Thorin (and the others, but he's hyperfocused on Thorin) is heading to Ravenhill, and that with Bolg's Orcish forces attacking from the north, they'll be caught there, unawares (he's also the one that brings it to Tauriel's attention that Kíli is up there, too). AND insists that he will go warn Thorin - despite Gandalf's protests. He HAS to go to him.
(I do think he was hoping there'd be an Elvish battalion behind him, but as soon as that was clearly not gonna happen, he stepped up to go on his own.)
- And the way that Thorin says Bilbo's name, when he appears with him on Ravenhill - it's so heavy, and full of relief, and apology, all just in the tone. AND paired with the music - they throw a little bit of the theme of the Shire in as Bilbo appears, as they see each other, playing hope into the moment after all.
As we know, the only hope for Thorin's (and Kíli's, and Fíli's) survival is to flee. And with that music, I think it is pulling us back to the idea that Bilbo might have been about to ask Thorin to go home with him, back in the acorn scene. So on some level, we are meant to believe that that would have been their best chance. Thorin could have survived, and they could have been together, if they fled to his home. Whatever that would have meant for the future, retaking the mountain later, if they left and the Orcs claimed it, etc.
- And at Bilbo's news, the rest of Thorin's mind clears IMMEDIATELY - he realizes it's a trap, and he tries to pull them back. He was going to try to get them out.
....But, at the same time, as soon as he sees Fíli captured - his immediate heir - and Fíli tells them to go, he refuses. Like in that moment, he gives up. And Bilbo's posture in response to that, after Fíli is slain, and Thorin runs after Kíli, is SO defeated. He draws his sword, yes, but he wanders, listless, hopeless, and almost lets the Gundabad Orcs overtake him. He just saw a friend, someone SO important to his love, too, get slaughtered. Only to then watch his love race off into the same danger, likely to die. After coming there, doing all he could, to save Thorin and them all.
In fact, he KNOWS as soon as Thorin yells for Kíli and runs after him, without looking in his direction, or Dwalin's either. He knows it's over. Thorin has chosen to run into death with his heirs, like a twisted version of honor, and it is too late.
And of course, it should be noted that from the moment he heard Bombur's horn and knew Thorin had been restored to himself, he had forgiven him everything. He had forgiven him everything, and come to save him, to get him out, and maybe they could escape and be together. But now...
- Also, yes, Thorin needed the closure of getting to kill Azog. But he could have come back and done that in the future, he was PREPARED to. Ugh. Whatever. AND he was still trying to win!! He thought that he had, for a moment. His intentions WERE, even after everything, to try to survive the battle, get Kíli (who he didn't know was slain, yet) and return to his people. Return to Bilbo.
But FINE - it IS important and poetic that even though he perishes in their battle, he does tie up that part of his honor - his family's honor - by killing him, too. Especially since he has to let himself be mortally wounded to do that.
- Segue immediately from that, from his standing up from that battle BUT still bleeding out, to Bilbo waking up after having been knocked out before. Intentionally, again, linking them together even though death is imminent. He sees the Eagles, he sits up, catches sight of Thorin - sees him fall - and rushes to his side.
The battle, and Thorin's fight with Azog, may have been the action climax of the film. But Bilbo and Thorin's last exchange, him being there when he dies, is absolutely the emotional climax.
And jesus. Jesus jesus jesus. Yes, they cloak the emotion in terms of friendship, but Thorin literally uses his dying breath to apologize for what he did at the gate, for putting him in danger. Which Bilbo tells him he was glad to share in (BECAUSE THEY FELL IN LOVE. UGH). And Thorin tells Bilbo to go home - reminding himself that Bilbo has a safe and secure future, even though they'll be apart - and tells him to plant trees - calling back to the acorn scene again, and the fact that it's an Oak, and that he knows they BOTH know that he'll always think of him.
He knows they both know what they could have had. What they had started to be, to each other.
"If more people valued home above gold, the world would be a merrier place." After telling Bilbo to go home, to that safety?
YEAH. HE KNEW. THEY BOTH KNEW.
And of course all the while, Bilbo is insisting that Thorin hang on, that he'll live, that the Eagles are coming for them (which is a VERY Sam and Frodo on Mount Doom parallel, even though Samfro didn't know they were going to be rescued), and doesn't give up, even for a few moments after Thorin's already gone.
To which he utterly breaks down.
- AND they cut right from that to Tauriel's grief over Kíli, and having to admit that that was love.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THIS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING.
- And the shot of him, after, with Gandalf - that clearly was about him having to fold his grief up in a little box, and move forward, but that being SO hard to do - especially as he stepped back, sat there, and let Thorin's kin come to him.
- Which leads right into (well, except for the weird one-horn-many-horns people-of-Laketown moment) him leaving, and though Balin invites him to stay, and celebrate Thorin's life to pass him into legend, he literally says "To me, he was never that. To me he was... (**voice breaking**) To me... he was..."
And then Balin just looks at him like he KNOWS, cause he DOES.
"Well I think I'll just slip quietly away."
GODS.
There is no unqueering this. This was all intentional.
And as with the moment on the steps, before, he smiles and packs his grief - packs the truth - away. As much as the Tookishness in him got him on this quest, made him equal to it, the Baggins side of him gives him the shield of propriety to hide behind. A shield he will use for the rest of his life.
- But even with that, when Gandalf says he's parting from him at the borders of the Shire, he says that's a shame - "I quite like having a Wizard around. It seems they bring good luck."
Even with the loss, the pain, everything he went through, he does not regret it. He found companionship in a very found family way with the whole party, and he found love, with Thorin. Even though it ended just when it had begun.
- AND THEN, when he has to prove who he is by showing the contract, and the auctioneer asks who "this person you pledged your service to, Thorin Oakenshield" is (IS, not was), Bilbo's shield cracks a little bit - he tells them he WAS his friend, full of quiet, naked grief again (though still composed by Hobbit standards), and then he walks into his gutted, empty house, and if that's not a metaphor for his broken heart you can come over here and stab me in the face.
- And what they show us next, is important - he gets dressed, he stands in front of the empty pantry, he finds the handkerchief he forgot the morning he left. We see pinecones in the background, calling back to the night he defended Thorin from Azog in the first place, when they realized their feelings were returned. He sees his mother's portrait knocked over, and he puts it back in place above the mantle, next to his father.
And on that note, I will share a line from @perkynurples ' "Homeward Bound."
“My parents died after a long and happy life. There are red poppies on my mother’s grave, and daffodils on my father’s, and they are side by side, even in death. Do I not deserve the same?”
I know they changed a lot from the book into the movies, especially pulling 3 movies out of one book, and that includes having expanded upon Bilbo and Thorin's relationship.
But I think it's no accident that Bilbo remained a bachelor, all his life, after knowing Thorin.
And now that I've put myself through this again, even though yay for knowing what I really think about how they happened.... I am gonna make some tea and lay down.
🌱🌳💕
