Sometimes I think about how bittersweet it must have been for Zuko to see the reunion between Sokka, Katara, and their dad given what his own relationship with his father and younger sister is like.

Secrets - Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: You love Sokka and it scares you. You don't know what he'll do if he finds out. (Your a firebender)
A/N - ngl I wrote this for myself because of my recurring obsession with this lovable boy.
warnings: kissing, kinda short sorry
Hope you enjoy!
__________________
It all started when I met aang.
I ran way from my home not too long before i met them. Growing up in the fire nation was rough, especially being the emperors daughter. After zuko left to search for the airebender, i soon followed suit and left my status behind. All I ever was to my father was a dissapointment and I couldn't deal with Azula alone.
I was left with few options of where to go. I ended up living undercover in ba sing se where I soon met three kids my age. They were strangers at first, but now I don't know how I lived life without them. They have become my friends. My family.
While I know they are the exact people my brother is hunting down, I couldn't help but join them on their journey. I don't know what I'll do if I have to face my brother, but I know that I will never betray them.
Each of them showed me a kindness I have never known or deserved. Katara immediately accepted me, she loved having another girl be on the conquest and she insisted on braiding my hair everyday. Aang was kind and understanding. Deep down I know that he is aware of the secrets I keep, but he respects my boundaries and he shows me the fun to be had of everyday things. And than theres sokka. He is a completely different story.
When I met him my whole world was changed. At first he was wary of me and my additional presence to the group, but we soon started to get along. Really get along. He was protective and caring. At first glance, i immediantly respected the way that he treated his sister. While they fought like all siblings do, it's obvious that they truly love each other and I know that sokka will take care of her until the end.
I can see that all sokka wants to accomplish is to be a good leader and brother. He doesn't have bending abilities and he has admitted to me that this is one of his greatest insecurities, but it is far from a flaw. He hides a lot of his fear through his stupid jokes and ridiculous attitude, but I have learned to see through his disguise.
I have fallen so incredibly fast for this water tribe boy and he is completely unaware. Knowing his story, I can't let him find out about my past. He will never love me especially if he knows that im fire nation scum.
__________________
"Y/N, do you want to share with me?"
I looked over to see Sokka and his adorable puppy dog eyes looking at me.
"Of course." I giggle, helping him set up the tent.
Due to our constant travels and relocations, we had very few supplies which resulted in only three tents between the four of us. I wasn't complaining though.
"Goodnight Y/N." Aang said, giving me a friendly kiss on the cheek before heading to his tent.
"Yeah, goodnight!" Katara said with a wink. To her, it was obvious that I liked her older brother. She immediantly approved when she found out about it. If only she knew who I was.
I climbed into our shared tent and zipped it up behind me. Sokka was already laying down opening up the covers for me.
It was a normal thing for sokka and I to fall asleep in each other's embrace. Ever since we accidently fell asleep during one of aangs stories we have been inseparable. Sokka claims that he sleeps better because of how warm I naturally am and frankly he helps me keep the nightmares of my dad at bay.
From an outside perspective, our relationship is definitely weird. It's not normal for 'just friends' to cuddle up to each other every night. Deep down though, we both knew that their are feelings, but neither of us wanted to ruin what we have. What we could have.
I slipped under the covers next to him, his water nation blankets being especially fluffy and comfortable. Naturally his arms wrapped around my smaller frame and I tucked my head against his chest. His slow heart beat helped lull me to sleep.
"Y/N?" Sokka asked right before I dozed off.
"Yea?" I softly replied.
He than looks me straight in the eye. "I'm really glad I met you."
The statement takes me aback and I look maintain his eye contact, sitting up.
"Can I kiss you?" I whisper, not being able to help myself any longer.
He doesn't reply but leans forward and captures my lips with his. His body radiates warmth as he scoops me into his lap. I slide my hands into his soft hair that is let out of his usual ponytail. He grunts softly and let's go of my lips and puts his forehead against mine.
"Y/N, I think I love you."
Before he could return to kissing me my entire body freezes. He notices when I tense and looks at me questionably.
"I cant." I reply, leaving the tent in haste. The boy of my dreams watches my figure go, wondering what he did wrong. I cant do this to him. It has to stop.

Inspired by a post i just saw, here is the only correct take on a Batfam Atla au(Tw for things present in Atla canon such as racial and misogynistic violence)
@mayameanderings @desi-pluto
Duke is the Avatar-No ifs or buts,he's literally THE SIGNAL OF HOPE FOR GOTHAM
Jason is a Fire Nation commoner who got adopted by the Fire Lord after his parents' death
The Fire Lord is Black Mask and Talia is Ursa but it's not shipping because EW,she's got no positive relation to him and was instead Jason's firebending teacher he thought BM succeeded in killing in his rage after finding out she was trying to adopt him but she actually escaped and got amnesia and a matching burn scar to Jason's but only the opposite side because she's his other half his father burned the bridge to
You know the drill-Jason's sent to capture Avatar Duke,Duke redeems him with his little shit sunshine boy swag without even trying, they are hashtag brothers in every universe.Lil bit more on Duke is that he's actually a Fire Nation Avatar but of the black etchnic subgroup in the comics and his parents were driven mad by spirits sent as 'punishment' for their 'impurity' by General Joker and this is why he is a nomad at the beginning, having fled the Fire Nation because he was sick and tired of still being the problem child at school but getting no comfort this time
(Note:Jason is part of this subgroup and for self-indulgence,every other element has their own black etchnic variant too)
Stephanie is an Airbender-Air Nomads are objectively the best part of Atla so she deserves it.She's tibetan AN and black AN mixed and is pretty much an Aang and Ty Lee fusion-Both in design and personality. Her plot is getting tangled up with Duke and Cass as the og trio when they end up at her temples and she ends the series as the Earth King's consort(that king being Cass)and an ambassador but beforehand spends her time doing anti-imperialist war crimes
Cass is the daughter of the Cains, who lied to everyone about her being mute so they could train her to be the perfect submissive obidient daughter only for it to be blasted back in their face as she learned Earthbanding at the tutelage of badgermoles since they couldn't speak either and she became an underground pro-bender as 'The Silent Bandit' to make money for herself to run away from home and her first instinct when she made enough was to go to the Air Nomads for safety. This more or less worked in the end as she ended up getting crowned Earth King over the actual bloodheirs
Tim is a nonbender who knows chiblocking, the last skill Janet taught him before she died and he used it to avoid getting bullied but isolated himself from other kids as a result because they thought he was a freak. He accidentally joined the main gang when they visited his hometown in the Fire Nation and helped them blend in and they went on an adventure where they gave him honorary member status and he became an official one when they returned
Dick is a trans waterbender and she's their mentor who joined in on their travels because she wasn't about to let a bunch of kids run around fighting fascists without an adult around so they'd have backup and someone to take care of them. She herself was the leader of the Teen Titans,a resistance team, but retired after having her bending taken away and it's returned to her by Duke a bit into her time with them. She leaves Roy to take care of the tribe and when they reunite,he pulls her into a passionate kiss as a confession in front of the whole Duke's Court(their team name)and they have your typical grossed out kids reaction and after this he becomes the Team Dad to her Team Mom
Damian is also trans and named Yasmine and here comes the big previous Avatar plot twist:It was actually Talia, who is of arab and chinese Earth Kingdom descent and not Fire Nation!!Part of the BM tragedy is that she died during childbirth due to Fire Nation induced sickness and this manifested in a Spirit World fiasco that ended with her being ressurected but no longer the Avatar because her soul'd been passed onto Duke by then and she was given a new one and her being lied to about Yasmine being stillborn so she'd stay in the FN.Yasmine's a Talia Warrior and does her best to uphold her mother's legacy due to all the thing's she'd been told about her
She joins Duke's Court, they find Talia again,Duke learns how to cure his parents with Avatar powers and they live happily ever after despite the struggles,Jason gets Lightningbending and white fire as symbolism for healing his inner child and the ages are Duke and Damian-12,Stephanie and Tim-13,Cass-14,Jason-17,Dick and Roy-25 and Talia-40s

i neeed to see hakoda & piandao interact tbh. hakoda sees his son has a friendship with this random fire nation adult and is like ?? in one comic where sokka showed interest in fire nation food he said "please dont say things like that" if he found out sokka was friends with piandao he would wonder where he went wrong in his parenting
i've said before that i think there'd be a lot of mutual suspicion when they first meet. like hakoda is concerned about a fire nation guy being interested in his kid, like you said, but also piandao knows that kids generally latch onto him as a father figure because there's some problem at home. when they meet they're both kinda sizing each other up, trying to make sure the other's good for sokka.
except they're both capable of being polite so nobody ever really notices. hakoda is in friendly welcoming community-leader mode and piandao is being a Perfect Gentleman and they seem to be getting along fine. like if this is a piandao & jeong jeong visit the southern water tribe situation like in the post i linked, sokka's thrilled that his dads are getting along, meanwhile bato and jeong jeong (who have some idea of their partners' feelings) are trying their best to stay out of the weird polite little dad rivalry.
this is also a dynamic in the hakoda/piandao boiling rock au, where they have to learn to trust each other because they don't have anyone else (until they run into suki).
eventually, piandao is genuine enough that hakoda believes he's not a bad influence and piandao discovers that hakoda left his kids to fight in the war, which explains why sokka needed a dad. (piandao feels kinda bad for assuming hakoda was the problem, when the problem was, y'know. the war. that he used to fight in)
and then they become friends and maybe make out

If you’re looking for prompts, I’d love to see more imagines where Hakoda adopts Azula and Zuko. If not, that’s alright. Just wanted to say I love your content(I’m new to tumblr and you were the first person I followed- a decision I do not regret in the slightest).
Thanks for the ask!!
Thank you so much for this! For the ask, for loving my content and for following me. Welcome to Tumblr! I hope you'll like it here. I don't have any incorrect quotes but here are some Hakoda adopting Azula and Zuko headcanons.
Canon:
Hakoda would know about the Agni Kai with Zuko and his father when it happens but he thinks it's just propaganda. Of course people would say that the Fire Nation is so horrible their own leader burned and banished his son. He only believes it when his son tells him about Zuko and the giant scar on his face. After the Boiling Rock, Hakoda does ask Zuko about his scar and tells him what happened.
Hakoda doesn't get to adopt Zuko officially because of Iroh, but he's okay with Zuko thinking of him as secondary paternal figure.
A few months after the war, Zuko got sick and Hakoda, being the only one in the Fire Nation, took care of him. It was the first time Zuko called him dad.
Azula would be a little more complicated. It's only after months of therapy that she finally accepts Ozai's abuse and starts to heal. She returns to the palace about a year after the war ends and that's when she meets Hakoda again. Similar to Zuko, she has no clue how to act around father figures. Because of this she often flinches when she thinks Hakoda is angry at her which makes him more careful not to raise his voice.
A few months after she returns to the palace, Azula continuously has nightmares because, while being her home, this place would still be a constant reminder of her abusive father, neglectful mother and her biggest failure. One day, when Hakoda is returning to the South Pole, he finds out that Azula snuck aboard and she asks him if she can come with him to the South Pole.
Of course, Hakoda can't turn her away so he invites her to the Southern Water Tribe. She learns to love the village, despite the cold, very quickly. Katara and Sokka are a little uneasy around her, but Hakoda asks them to give her a chance. Hakoda does send a letter to Zuko telling him his sister is in the South Pole so he can call off the search part. Zuko comes down and spends a week there to make sure Azula is comfortable. Not only do Azula and Zuko spend time with Katara and Sokka, eating Water Tribe food, getting into snowball fights and helping them rebuild the village but they also get to spend time with Hakoda and find out how a real father treats his children. When Zuko leaves to return to the Fire Nation, Azula thanks Hakoda for letting her stay and calls him her dad.
AU:
It's important to note that @ilikepjo24 came up with this AU which is that Hakoda finds out about Azula taking ADHD pills to help her study and takes them away. I'm just helping them expand it. Ask if you want to know any more.
Azula and Zuko are in foster care when they turn 11 and 13 (for obvious reasons) and are tossed around from family to family (some good and some bad). Ursa is out of the picture so she can't take them and Iroh wasn't granted custody by the courts so he can't take them. When Azula and Zuko are 14 and 16 they're placed with Hakoda and Kya.
Hakoda and Kya love them both but Azula and Zuko are hesitate about trusting them because of so many bad foster parents and they start betting on how long they'll last.
Slowly, Hakoda and Kya prove themselves to be good foster parents. They take the two on vacation, buy stuff for them, let Iroh come see them, and comfort them. Sokka and Katara also act as good foster siblings who try to help Zuko and Azula meet more people and get situated in their home.
However, Hakoda finds out Azula starts taking ADHD pills to help her study. He takes them away and Azula fails one of her finals. Terrified of how he'll react, Azula hides away at Ty Lee's house while sends Hakoda and Kya into a panic because they have no idea where their daughter is. Finally, Ty Lee tells Zuko she has her and Zuko tells Hakoda and Kya where she is. Kya goes to pick her up and takes her back to the house. Azula expects to be kicked out, for Hakoda to hit her or Kya to say she doesn't love her anymore, but her only punishment is no phone for a month and she had to come home right after school everyday.
Zuko and Azula both still worry that Hakoda and Kya will one day get sick of them and send them back to foster care so the parents decide to adopt them and officially make them their son and daughter.

Our duty (Part 1)
this is an AU where Yue lives and Hakoda is chosen as the king of the entire southern water tribe,
part 2: https://www.tumblr.com/the-air-nomad/719125972910309376/our-duty-part-2?source=share
Tumblr media
Five years had passed since the end of the Hundred Years War. After Ozai's defeat, the lives of avatar Aang and his friends had become even more charged than they were during the war. The avatar and his girlfriend, respected maestra Katara, were working on finding the remains of the air nomad culture and on preparing their wedding. Toph, the most powerful earthbender , had founded the first metalbending school in the world, and all the young people in the earth kingdom hoped to have the honor of becoming her students. The fire lord worked tirelessly to restore ties with the other nations and eliminate propaganda and Ozai's loyalists left after the war.
Sokka, now the crown prince of the Southern Water Tribe, had made countless diplomatic trips to other nations to facilitate the growing development of the South. Thanks to his inventions, his tribe had become an important industrial and cultural center. The prince even founded the first University of Engineering and Exact Sciences in the world. Although Sokka loved helping his people and considered his father one of the wisest people in the world, he could not understand the logic of his new decision.
Sokka: To recap, you want me to break up with Suki to arrange my marriage with the girl I left almost 6 years ago to continue my journey with the avatar.
Hakoda: Sokka, you know that your relationship with Suki is already over because you both have different debts to your people. She moved permanently to the island of Kyoshi to train the next generation of fighters. You have to prepare to take over the leadership, and for that you need a wife
Sokka: From what I can see, the fact that you don't have a wife doesn't stop you from being an extraordinary leader. However, don't tell Katara that I said that because I don't want to spend the rest of my life buried in ice.
Hakoda: sometimes I forget that you inherited both my sarcasm and intelligence my son. I was afraid that I would have to burden you with another state problem.
Sokka: what are you talking about dad?
Hakoda: you see my dear, technically our tribe is still a colony of the northern water tribe. Not even the fact that the North ignored the South for a hundred years doesn't change that. With the help of Master Pakku, former General Iroh and the fact that your sister is engaged to the avatar we managed to get an agreement with Chief Arnook.
Sokka: And why didn't I find out about this sooner? Father, I fought in the war and I am your heir! How can you hide such a thing from me?!
Hakoda: Now is not the time to ask or offer explanations, but I swear this is the last thing I'm hiding from you. In a few weeks, a convoy of northern ships loaded with waterbenders will arrive in the South with the Chief and his daughter.
Sokka: maybe it's just the paranoia installed in the marrow of my bones due to the war, but this sounds quite threatening.
Hakoda: I'm afraid you're right and that if we refuse the generous offer of the Nordic Tribe, we'll get a civil war instead of independence.
Sokka: wonderful, this is the best present for my 21st birthday! Why does the universe hate me so much?!
Although I do not own the characters from avatar the last airbender, this work belongs to me! I sincerely hope you liked it and please rate it and leave a comment! follow me to see the continuation and to see my next posts! 💖💖💨

Wow a whole Avatar AU came to my mind while I was freaking falling alseep, like usual xD
Takes place in 100 years old as in canon. Basically goes the same.
Except the Ozai/Iroh is BI and he is actually not very enthusiastic about continuing the war. His wife died while giving birth, so he has only his little son, King, the one and only prince and heir. But Belos, trusted advicer and non-bender, assasinated him to get the throne. Under premise of ‘I’ll just sit here and lead our nation, you know me, I am cool. We are still searching for little prince!’ He is not, he meant to kill him too, but he manages to escape. Well he is a toddler, but there comes Eda! She was a general, but felt how everything is sus and when this shit happened, she took a kid and bolted. Sadly she couldn’t explain it to Lilith so now she thinks Eda is a traitor(who was always better at everything despite being youngest and not as interested) and tries to capture her herself so she won’t get heavy punishement. Eda is worried Lily is too loyal to Belos and will rat the kid out. Caleb tried to stop assasination(non-bender) with his wife, but they were killed by Belos who then proceeds to grieve for the same thing(how dare he betray me like that). Belos is left with a nephew who he is... not the nicest to, canon basically. Hunter is non-bender but is great at fighting with weapon and close fighting.
And with the whole Avatar shtick and lost prince, he, Lily and Kiki(the only one who knows what’s up) are on their search.
Collector is the Avatar. Of course he is. He is very talented, learns air bending with ease, despite not being very air nomad like xD Sure he likes jokes, but jeez kid stop making air bending so scary xD He has a mentor, basically that other titan, who is strict but caring. When Collector was revealed to be the Avatar at age of 10(cause of course you make 10 years old fight), he threw a tantrum and ran away and got the same fate as Aang.
He was found in Southern Tribe. By chief’s son, prodigy waterbender, Gus and his best friend non bender Luz. Camila plays the role of Gran-Gran, and let’s them go on their journey(except not everything goes the same and she doesn’t know the kid is freaking avatar, Luz just helps to get the lost kid home jhsg xD). Gus’s dad, Perry, isn’t the most fighting type, but he is smart and Gus looks up to him, despite not really wanting to take over leading the village. His mom died Katara’s mom death. Luz’s dad died in the same fight protecting the village.(wonder if i should make Vee Luz’s lost twin sister jsh xD)
In Northern Tribe the royal family are the Blights. Technically Alador is the leader, but Odalia basically manipulates him to do what she thinks is the best. She wants Amity to be perfect little princess, learn healing and get married. Amity wants to fight. She trains with Emira and Edric, who prefer to use their water bending to pull sick tricks xD (but Emira still learns a bit of healing with her ‘friend’ Viney).
In Earth Kingdom Terra(earthbender of course) is both the ‘King’ and that shady secretary. Keeps her ‘garden’ oblivious to the outside world, all pretty and untouched. She leads Dai Lis. Raine, earth bender, is a teacher in the university and learns about the lies and wants to reveal the truth to people. Carefully. Bump is a teacher in a school and wants to oppose Terra too.
Willow is an earth bender but a late bloomer and was bullied for it, cause everyone in her family are always earthbenders. I didn’t get to think too much on her xDD
OH. I didn’t think much on Earth Kingdom, but I think a bit on Air Nomads, yes they survive a bit but eeeeeehhhh. The one temple where Aang found out the truth is the same. Collie finds bones of his mentor. The one with Guru is the same. The guru role is taken by Bat Queen and her little children. She protects the Air Nomads culture. The one with machines now are with Titan Trappers. They lost their air bending ways, and very antagonistic to outsiders. The one in Fire Nation did not in fact lose their bending, and not as antagonistic, but they are too ‘everyone for themselves’. Adrian is one of them.
I think that’s where I fell asleep xD I think I made Darius fire nation general on rebelion side, like in canon. He and Eber are fire benders.
Boscha is bully in elite fire nation school, to learn better. Skara is elite in Northern Water Tribe, a picked friend for Amity. She’ll come around too. Barcus and Jerbo are students in Earth Kingdom school. Kids are all benders.
Oh, and kids are aged-up just a bit. Collie is 10, King is 8, Gus is 13, Luz and Amity are 15, Willow is 16 and Hunter is 17.
I think that’s it xD

Atla AU:
Aang gets kidnapped by Zhao but the Blue Spirit doesn't come to rescue him until 5 years later. During this time Aang has been kept imprisoned and just barely kept alive like Zhao wanted. Ba Sin Se has also been conquered by the Fire Nation and Aang is being paraded around the fire nation. Aang has spent the last 5 years in captivity, from ages 12-17, eventually he is freed by the Blue Spirit (zuko) at this point aang is severely malnourished and really weak and thin - Aang ( the escaped convict).
Zuko never restored his honour and moves to Ba Sin Se with his uncle Iroh. He dates Jin and they end up getting married. By the timeline of the fic Jin is pregnant with their first child. Zuko ( soon to be dad) + Iroh has the Jasmine Dragon tea shop.
Toph never meets the gaang and never leaves her parents, when the gaang finally meet her 5 years later it's to crash her wedding. Toph decides to join them and her betrothed sends out Earthbenders to get back his fiancé "the avatar has kidnapped my bride" - Toph ( the runaway bride).
Katara - She refuses to give up hope and believes that one day the world will have peace. Everytime Sokka starts to doubt and lose faith, she is there to lift him back up. She and sokka both develop a very deep hatred of the fire nation, so much more than what we saw in Canon. Her grandmother and father try to convince them to give up fighting and settle down and find happiness in the lives they have. She refuses to. She vows to never stop fighting until she can free Aang and destroy the fire nation. She may or may not have started up a relationship with Jet again now that she actively wants to burn the fire nation to ground too - Katara ( freedom fighter)
Sokka - Is working with Katara and other rebels they can find to try and free Aang and break down the Fire Nation. However, after the failed invasion during the Black Sun all hope seems lost. The Fire Nation has taken over the earth Kingdom leaving the water tribes no other choice but to surrender. Sokka like in Canon eventually meets and falls in love with Yue, here however since Zhao captured Aang there is no Northern Water Tribe invasion and Yue never dies. Sokka is constantly fighting with the other world leaders including his father who have given up but Sokka and Katara keep fighting. They have started to build a secret underground rebellion, also Sokka is an innovator and is creating machines and weapons to fight against the fire nation when the time is right - Sokka ( revolution leader)
Should I try write this AU or has this already been done?

of course LO doesn't care about Chakotay. he's connected to both his mother and his father's tribes, struggled to reconcile conflicting beliefs and expectations, fought stereotypes and challenged unjust systems, is reasonable enough to hear everyone out and respect others' beliefs, looks out for others and disagrees with his best friend about 80% of the time but remains civil and kind and respectful with her. Chakotay is an anthropology/archaeology double major who is the careful, quiet counterpart to Janeway's "I will endanger myself to help others" loudness. he's the anti-LO. he's everything she'll never be as a person, better in every way, and that doesn't appeal to her. she can't relate to a mature, thoughtful, respectful, calm, collected, dad-joking Native man with deep ties to his roots who sees the humanity in everyone. not one single part of that makes sense to her.
honestly as a Cree person I love Chakotay because you can't divorce his character from being Native. you CAN divorce LO's rare non-white OC from their heritage and lose nothing. a white Aliana and a black one and a Native one wouldn't have one single word shifted in their backstories. Chakotay's family left Earth to go settle on another planet where they could practice their tribe's values and way of life freely without white influence. LO won't even contact other Cherokee people to get resources on Cherokee. shit, she won't even Google some stuff and put more effort into pretending to be Cherokee more convincingly.
the really hilarious part is that Chakotay was written by white people and they STILL handled race better than LO. they made a lot of mistakes they later apologized for in regards to not doing the research about Native tribes and their differences and ended up spending a lot of time in tie-in novels clarifying shit. but I still love Chakotay because he's a Native person who's hardworking, smart, calm, and tries his hardest to understand other people. instead of the "helpful Native sidekick" character archetype he gets into verbal fights with his boss! they disagree on shit! he's not here to hype up white people or to sleep with them so the audience can oggle a hot Native body, he's here to do the right thing and if that means telling his best friend and commanding officer she's wrong, he'll do it. he will call in the ship doctor to relieve her of duty and take the helm himself if it's a catastrophic enough argument and instead of quoting wise old white cishet dudes like usual in Trek's writing he quotes Native and Indigenous writers, leaders and scholars.
meanwhile LO is "Cherokee" according to her and has written ZERO Native characters and ZERO non-white ones whose race isn't completely irrelevant to the story/couldn't be changed without anything else changing and she has NEVER focused on Native characters and NEVER talked about Native representation in media. being "Cherokee" (according to her and not the Cherokee Nation) is
real Natives have a lot of opinions on Chakotay and like... you're not REQUIRED to like him. him being written by and portrayed by a white guy is super gross and I'm not going to excuse it. but at least it was an attempt. the character is Native and second-in-command and often handed full control in times of crisis and had his own independent stories separate from the white cast. it was huge progress.
and all LO can do is drool over the pretty white lady, whose character she ALSO didn't get, and use "I'm Native!" as a shield while never writing a single Native character in her life in anything (and no her writing herself but in brownface doesn't count).
I'd claim the white writers of Star Trek Voyager as Native allies before I'd claim LO as one. they gave us Native rep. wtf has LO ever done for us?
all of this what you said makes all the more egregious to me this post, anon: https://lily-orchard.tumblr.com/post/190144669550/i-want-to-write-a-native-american-character-for-a an anon went directly to LO to ask her advice on how to write a native character and rather that direct them to any article or any resource, as they asked, LO just said to not "make a big deal out of spirituality and you'll be fine." i'm not native so correct me if i'm wrong... but isn't spirituality a big deal when it comes to the culture of many Native American Nations?

As the years passed, Kai grew from a tiny, helpless infant into a spirited and energetic young boy. His laughter filled the air as he raced through the fields, his feet pounding against the earth as he chased after butterflies and played with the other children in the village.
Sokka and Zuko watched over him with pride and wonder, marveling at the boundless energy and curiosity that seemed to drive their son forward. They had both grown accustomed to the responsibilities of parenthood, but nothing could have prepared them for the sheer joy and fulfillment that Kai brought into their lives.
Despite their busy schedules and the demands of their respective duties, Sokka and Zuko made sure to carve out time for their family, cherishing every moment they spent together. Whether it was exploring the nearby forests, sharing meals around the campfire, or simply cuddling up together under the stars, they savored each precious moment, knowing that these were the memories that would last a lifetime.
As Kai grew older, he became increasingly aware of his fathers' roles in the world. Sokka had risen to become a respected leader within the Water Tribe, using his wisdom and experience to guide his people through times of prosperity and adversity alike. Meanwhile, Zuko had become a powerful figure in the Fire Nation, working tirelessly to rebuild and reform his nation in the aftermath of the war.
To Kai, his fathers were more than just leaders – they were heroes, revered and admired by all who knew them. He looked up to them with awe and admiration, marveling at their strength, courage, and unwavering dedication to their people.
One day, as Kai watched his fathers from afar, a group of children approached him, their eyes wide with curiosity. "Is it true that your dads are the leaders of the Water Tribe and the Fire Nation?" one of them asked, her voice tinged with excitement.
Kai nodded proudly, puffing out his chest with pride. "Yes, that's right! My dads are amazing. They're the best leaders anyone could ask for."
The other children exchanged excited whispers, their faces alight with admiration. "Wow, that's so cool!" one of them exclaimed. "I wish my parents were as awesome as yours."
Kai beamed with pride, basking in the adoration of his peers. He felt a swell of gratitude towards his fathers, knowing that they had worked tirelessly to create a better world not just for their own family, but for everyone.
As Kai grew older, he began to understand the significance of his fathers' roles in the world. He listened attentively as they spoke of their struggles and triumphs, their hopes and dreams for the future. And with each passing day, his admiration for them only grew stronger.
One evening, as they sat together around the campfire, Kai turned to his fathers with a look of wonder in his eyes. "I want to be just like you when I grow up," he declared, his voice filled with determination.
Sokka and Zuko exchanged a glance, their hearts swelling with pride at their son's words. "You can be anything you want to be, Kai," Sokka replied, his voice filled with warmth and encouragement. "Just follow your heart, and never give up on your dreams."
Zuko nodded in agreement, a proud smile playing at the corners of his lips. "We believe in you, Kai. Whatever path you choose, we'll be there to support you every step of the way."
And with those words of love and encouragement ringing in his ears, Kai felt a surge of confidence and determination wash over him. No matter what the future held, he knew that as long as he had his fathers by his side, he could accomplish anything he set his mind to.
And so, with his fathers' love and guidance to light the way, Kai set out to carve his own path in the world, knowing that no matter where life took him, he would always carry with him the lessons and values that his fathers had instilled in him – courage, compassion, and the unwavering belief that anything was possible with love and determination.

1 Kings 11:1-12:19, Acts 9:1-25, Psalms 131:1-3, Proverbs 17:4-5
Today is the 13th day of June, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I'm Brian. It is great to be here with you today, as we gather, yet again, for the next step forward on our adventure through the Bible this year. And as we gather, yet again as a community, to do this together, what a joy that this can even happen. And so, what a joy to be here together with you today, as…as…as we step forward. And our next step, obviously, leads us back to the point that we left off and that leads us back into the book of First Kings and the reign of King Solomon. And we experienced this kind of mountaintop, apex moment, as all that Solomon desires to develop throughout Israel is developed and the nation's brought to notoriety and prosperity, it just doesn't last. And so, let's continue our journey forward. Today, First Kings chapter 11 verse 1 through 12 verse 19.
Commentary:
Okay so, we have just gone through our reading for today and like any other day, we read the portions of Scripture that we read each day. But monumental things happen today that are shifting the story in both the Old and the New Testaments. And they kind of go understated a little bit, so that we can kind of just breeze right by and continue the story. When actually, major, major shifts in the stories have happened today, in both the Old and the New Testament. So, in the Old Testament, in First Kings we said goodbye to King Solomon. Solomon has reached the end of his life and the end of his reign, and in the space of one day's reading, we have dramatic shifts. So, yesterday we’re reading about this pinnacle experience, where Israel is brought to their finest hour, under Solomon's rule and reign and respect is worldwide. Dignitaries are coming from all over the world. Riches and abundance are everywhere. And then we flip the page into today and we see the whole thing beginning to slide downward, to begin to come apart. In the latter years of Solomon's reign, he fell away from God, and he fell away from God because he fell in love with women. And we’re told that he had 700 wives and 300 concubines, that’s a thousand women. I have spent my whole life trying to keep up with one. That's a thousand women and it's not a thousand Israelite women, it's women from all over the world, who come from all different kinds of backgrounds, all different kinds of pagan traditions, and they bring all this into Jerusalem. And the king begins to worship false gods and then erect high places for these gods to be worshiped. So, Solomon, the wise one, brings idolatry into Jerusalem. This brings the prophetic utterance that the kingdom will be stripped away from the family of David. It won't happen in Solomon's lifetime, but the kingdom will be stripped away from Solomon's son. So, in the course of time that happens and that happened within today's reading. It's just a little bit of a convoluted story because Solomon's son is named Rehoboam and Solomon's leader of the building forces was named Jeroboam. It was Jeroboam who received this prophecy that he would inherit the kingdom. When Solomon found out about that, he tried to kill Jeroboam who had to go into exile in Egypt. And then when Solomon died, Rehoboam was to ascend the throne of his father. And so, he went to the city of Shechem, and all the tribes gathered at Shechem to anoint him as the successor to his father on the throne of Israel, but they sent for Jeroboam to come back from Egypt, because there was a matter, an issue, that they needed to discuss with their proposed new King Rehoboam. And that was the fact that Solomon had driven them hard as they were advancing Israel, as they were building and developing. It was hard forced labor, under harsh conditions. And so, they were going to the new King and saying look, if you will recognize how hard your dad pushed everybody, if you will lighten that load to something that's sustainable, then we will be your subjects, and you will be our king, and we will be your servants, and we will serve you. Jeroboam had been in charge of this labor. And so, he could speak to what the people were experiencing. And so, they're presenting this to King Rehoboam, then seeks counsel, the counsel of his father Solomon and the counsel of the people that he had grown up with. The counsel of Solomon, his father, was that, he should listen to the people and lighten their load. If he would be a servant to them in the beginning, they would be a servant to him for life. But he also went to the guys that he grew up with and said, “What do you guys think.” And they’re like, you shouldn’t, basically, you shouldn’t be listening to these people. You don’t need to serve them, you’re their King. Tell them your father's little finger was not as big as your waist, if they think it was hard under Solomon, it's going to be so much more difficult under you. You will rule them with an iron fist. And that's the advice he takes. So, when the people come back to hear what the king has, as a vision for them. He tells them that he has no intention whatsoever of lightening the load, if anything, he's going to make it more difficult. And that, that right there, changed the whole story going forward. Now we could say, the systematic things that we just talked about are what made the story go forward, which is true. Solomon falling away, falling in love with women, building high places, undermining his family. All of these things work together, just like they work together in our own lives. But Rehoboam's response to the people, that he has no intention of serving them, that they will serve him, and he will be harder than his father. That causes 10 of the tribes of Israel to basically blow their horns and say we are out of here. We, you are not our king. We are going home. We will figure this out, but you are not our king. This is Israel, friends, like this is the children of Israel. We’ve been traveling with them since they were born. Like, we've seen the whole story and they were united together as tribes. In this moment, they are dividing as tribes. Jeroboam, Solomon's former leader of the labor force, becomes king of the 10 tribes in the north. And they will be called the kingdom of Israel, the northern kingdom. Rehoboam is king of Judah in the south, the tribe of Judah and Benjamin, where Jerusalem is. This united tribes of Israel is no longer united, they have broken into two separate kingdoms: the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom. The king of the northern kingdom is Jeroboam, the king of the southern kingdom, is Rehoboam. And I’m not trying to talk slow and be redundant because I think we’re all dumb here. It’s just, it gets convoluted because the two kings names, Rehoboam, Jeroboam, are easy to confuse. And the monumental thing that's happening here, this splitting of the kingdom’s, so that they’re two separate nations, who will at times be completely at odds with one another. This is how the story is going forward. So, understanding that the children of Israel are not united anymore, and that we’re going forward in the story, is now going to tell the story of two separate kingdoms. And we’re in the book of Kings and so, we’re learning of these kings, we now have double the kings to keep track of. Now, there are kings of Israel and kings of Judah and we’re turning into the territory where we see their intermingling and the different times that they reigned and how they overlapped, and how they conflict, how they were in conflict with each other. This is like really important, or we’ll get lost really, really fast and go, what are all these names. Who are all these people, what's going on here? The kingdom has split. There are two nations now, Israel and Judah. And there are two kings, Jeroboam and Rehoboam. And we will continue with this drama as we go forward in the days ahead. But just understanding what's happening here, will help us to not lose our place.
And then we flip over into the Book of Acts and another monumental story shifting thing happens. This Pharisee Saul, who stood there and watched Stephen be stoned to death, has unleashed his vicious hatred of Jesus upon those who follow Jesus. So, he's been creating mayhem in Jerusalem, hauling people out of their homes and imprisoning them and putting them before the Sanhedrin. And he gets letters from the High Priest that give him permission to travel to Damascus, which is, which is a pretty good, a pretty good journey, when you don't have a car or a plane or anything. So, he's going to Damascus with permission to do the same thing in Damascus and haul these people back before the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem. His intention is to stamp out the memory of this name: Jesus. What happens today is monumental because this Saul, who’s trying to stamp out the name of Jesus, meets Jesus, on the road to Damascus. He has this experience that sends him to the ground with the bright light and he is blinded. And Jesus introduces himself. This Saul, as we probably all know, becomes the Apostle Paul. So, as we move through today's reading, we are getting this introduction to how Paul, came to know Jesus. And we will be traveling alongside the Apostle Paul, throughout the rest of the Book of Acts, but also, well beyond the Book of Acts, we will be moving into the letters of the Apostle Paul. And so, understanding his origin story is very helpful because we have a long journey next to this guy. And we’re gonna get to know what he has to say and what he has to teach, quite well, as we continue the journey forward. And we’ll find out that what he has to say and what he has to teach, is fundamentally the foundation of Christian doctrine. And so, we’ll move through every chapter and every verse of all of that, as we move forward. So, this is a day that we could kind of just read through and go, okay, like any other day, we…we just move the stories forward, but it's important for us to see. Major shifts have occurred now, in the Old and the New Testaments. And so, when we open up the Bible tomorrow, and we come around the Global Campfire, we've moved into new eras. The stories are taking on new complexions and it will be exciting for us to take this journey.
Prayer:
And so, Father, we thank You for Your word and the many complexions that it, that it offers us. The many views and vistas, the many facets, all of the different angles that it can be looked at, all of the ways that it reflects back Your glory into our lives. So, as we move through today and see these monumental shifts taking place in the Old and the New Testament, we invite You, Holy Spirit, to plant the story as we've brought it to this point in our hearts. And then, we look forward to the twists and turns that are in front of us. Come, Holy Spirit, and lead us into all truth. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer and Encouragements:
Hey DABers, it’s Winter. I prayed to God that, whatever I pray today is something that needs to be interceded for. And I want to pray for my friend Quill. Quill almost committed suicide yesterday. And the only thing really, to stop them was the fact that they were, they wanted to say, please let go. They kept saying, please let go. I’m not really worth anything. I’m not, I’m just worthless. And nothing, nothing is going to get better with my situation. And they kept saying things like this and I kept stubbornly being myself, I kept stubbornly saying no, I’m not gonna let you go on this. You’re not gonna have to go alone. And, and I just pray that they can come to a position where not only do they know God but also to a position where they are ready to leave the things that are making them want to do this. I pray so much over Quill because they are, they’re such a gentle soul and they’ve just had a bad rap and bad circumstances. So, if you guys could pray with me for Quill, I’d really appreciate it. I’ve only know them for a short while but this would mean a lot to me. Thank you, God, please be with them. Amen.
Hello, DAB Family. This is Diana from Florida. And I want to pray for Christine from Oregon. And before I pray, Christina, I just want to tell you that God is doing such an amazing work in you. I know you were scared to call but I’m so grateful you did because it is a testimony of how God is changing you. You’ve been reading the Bible for 6 months, consistently through the DAB. And you’ve been on this journey for a year off and on and now, you’ve been more consistent. And God is changing you. He’s changing your desires, he’s doing exactly what the word says, which is changing your heart of stone and giving you a heart of flesh. He’s changing your desires, the things that you once hated now, you’re starting to love. And the things you once loved, now you’re starting to hate. And that is a testimony. Praise God for your life. And so, I want to encourage you in that. I know you started this journey to sobriety and it’s hard. It’s hard. You’re going through withdrawals and those are all very normal things. I implore you to find people in your corner that can really help support you in that journey. If there’s an AA group that you can join. That would also be very helpful. And this way, you can become sober in this particular area and God can continue to do His work in your life. Dear God, I pray for Christina, right now in Oregon. She’s on the opposite end of this nation from me. But God, You love her so much. And You are doing a mighty work in her, even if she doesn’t see it yet. You are changing her and I just praise God. I praise You God for her life. And I pray that You would help her succeed in this journey. Put the people around her who can help her see this through. In Jesus ..
Heavenly Father, we ask that You would be with Sherrie Youngword and Lord, she’s asking for miraculous healing or a correct diagnosis. And we just ask that Your hand of mercy and grace be in her life and in her medical situation, Lord. And there was also an anonymous caller, that has a niece getting married, which will create a rare occurrence of your family being together. And your asking prayers that healing and restoration of family, relationships would occur at this event. And Lord, we just come in agreement with her and ask that You would soften the hearts of these family members and this celebration of love. Lord, and that they would be able to use this time to heal and reconcile their relational strife that exists among them. And that’s in the precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
Hello, DAB family. This is Adopted and Love. I called before. I’m going through a divorce; our first court date is in two weeks from yesterday. And I am full of anxiety and trying to give it all over to God. I’ve so many things going on, including a possible job change to be able to be more available for my kids. And I just don’t want to make any decisions without God, and I want to lean on Him in everything. And it’s not easy. I have to have faith that He’s gonna come through. And so, I’m just asking, asking for prayer that God would show up and He would make Himself abundantly known and be very clear, as I go through this and that He will hold me. Yeah, thank you.
Hey, DAB, it’s Christie from Ohio. I desperately need prayer. I’ve been drowning in stress with the uncertainty of my job. For the last year and a half, there’s been a round of layoffs and our company was just bought out by a larger company. And we’re gonna be restructuring a lot. But it’s all so new that the details given were very vague. For a while, I’ve struggled with am I gonna have a job, but when I look for something else, either I don’t find anything out there for me or anything that seems like I would like. Ideally, if my company could survive all of the turmoil, I’d like to stay because this is the first job, I’ve had that I’ve loved. Also, there’s a possibility that I could be promoted. But on the flip side, it just feels like there’s so much on shaky ground and some of the changes don’t feel good. And I work remotely and there’s not a lot of work in my area. And I’m also single so, for me, changing jobs usually means having to move away, uproot again. And I’m in my thirties now, and I’m just at the point in my life where I just need stability and I’m tired of constant change. And I just want a place I can belong. And I don’t want to leave my small town where I have friends and a church family that I can call home. I’ve been praying for an answer, but I just don’t feel God, I know He’s there, but it just doesn’t feel like, you know, any direction at the moment. But the stress is just making me physically sick and it’s hard to move forward and I just feel crushed by it. Just feel like I don’t really have anyone to talk about it with, so I just, prayers that I can figure out what the next steps are. Thanks.

27 - Do whatever. Just don't be a dick
28 - He hates them being called "beast" tribes - they're perfectly civilized folk, and the alliance nations all have a lot to do to make things right. But if he's asked to kill any of them, he'll still do it, just like he'd kill any other person or monster for coin
29 - Letting Minfilia go from the Bloody Banquet. Without telling her he loved her.
30 - Though he'll tell you to mind your own business, he's a relatively open book. Just don't ask him for his secrets on voidsent summoning. Or ask him to talk about his feelings.

ZUKKA FIC RECS
Through the Ice Darkly by chuffystilton
“You know what I think? I think we both hold different pieces of the same puzzle, and we can only solve it if we work together. You and I – we’re on the opposite sides of a century-long mystery.” “We’re also on the opposite sides of a war,” Zuko said drily.
Sokka flapped a hand. “Small details.”
“Not to the people you invaded.”
A century after the Northern Water Tribe attacked, two years after the Avatar’s sudden emergence from the ice and snow – why does the world feel more unbalanced than ever? Zuko and Azula are on the quest for an answer.

Sokka's expression is caught somewhere between determined and pissed off when he says, “I know you think this is your responsibility. But you’re not going to be alone in this. This is why we’re building you a council.”
“I know,” Zuko says.
“And the only way you’re going to die having done nothing but sit in meetings is if you let yourself do that. You’re not a bad leader if you take a break now and then.”
Zuko scowls. “What, so people can then say at least my father wasn’t lazy?”
Sokka tilts his head. “Don’t you think there’s a difference between laziness and, I don’t know, choosing life and happiness in spite of a terrible dad who tried to take both from you?”

Zuko is sixteen years old when he’s handed a crown, a throne, and a hundred-year ancestral legacy of colonial imperialism. A bit under a week after my initial report, Netflix officially confirmed the main cast of the live-action adaptation of ATLA. The announcement included some new information as well:
Albert Kim, previously already reported as showrunner/executive producer, will also be a writer on the series.
Michael Goi, previously already reported as a director, will also be an executive producer.
Roseanne Liang, previously already reported as a director, will also be a co-executive producer.
Jabbar Raisani is a newly announced director on the series! More on him in my next post.
Rideback was also announced as the production company, and from it Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore as executive producers (all previously already reported).
Lastly, a pretty extensive mission statement of sorts written by showrunner Albert Kim was released. The main thing is that it “confirms” that the show won’t be modernized or changed fundamentally from the original, probably addressing the assorted viral fake news that has been going on for years. If you follow Avatar News, you’ve already seen me debunk this ten thousand times, and never report it in the first place. :) Well, now it’s OFFICIAL official.
Key takeaways:
They’re confident about the bending VFX.
The story will be more streamlined and expanded compared to the original episodic format.
The worldbuilding will be expanded.
Concerning the following three pillars, it will be an “authentic” adaptation: story, characters, and cultural influences.
They’re specifically using that word “authentic”, and “authenticity”, a lot.
Here’s the full thing (bolding mine), as well as official descriptions of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko after it (no surprises there):
“This is all my daughter’s fault. She’s the one who got me hooked.
When Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired on Nickelodeon, she wasn’t quite old enough to fully track the narrative. Yet I’d still find her glued to the TV every week, captivated by the adventures of Aang and his friends (who would quickly become her friends).
I began watching along with her with the thought of helping her understand what was going on. But my Dad-splainy duties quickly fell by the wayside as I found myself sucked into the world and characters, and soon we were watching side by side, both of us swept away by the singular mix of action, humor, and epic storytelling.
It also wasn’t lost on me that this was a world that drew from Asian cultures and legend, which is a rarity to this day and something I appreciated as an Asian-American father. That my daughter was able to see characters who looked like her on screen was more than just entertaining. It was a gift.
Flash forward 15 years. Netflix offers me the opportunity to develop a live-action remake of Avatar. My first thought was, “Why? What is there I could do or say with the story that wasn’t done or said in the original?” A:TLA had only grown in popularity and acclaim over the last decade and a half, which is a testament to how complete and resonant a narrative experience it had been. So if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
But the more I thought about it, the more intrigued I became. VFX technology has advanced to the point where a live-action version can not only faithfully translate what had been done in animation — it can bring a rich new visual dimension to a fantastic world. We’ll be able to see bending in a real and visceral way we’ve never seen before.
Also, Netflix’s format meant we had an opportunity to reimagine a story that had originally been told in self-contained half-hour episodes as an ongoing serialized narrative. That meant story points and emotional arcs we’d loved in the original could be given even more room to breathe and grow.
Finally, a live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans. This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in.
I also knew what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to change things for the sake of change. I didn’t want to modernize the story, or twist it to fit current trends. Aang is not going to be a gritty antihero. Katara is not going to get curtain bangs. (I was briefly tempted to give Sokka a TikTok account though. Think of the possibilities.)
Don’t get me wrong. We’ll be expanding and growing the world, and there will be surprises for existing fans and those new to the tale. But throughout this process, our byword has been “authenticity.” To the story. To the characters. To the cultural influences. Authenticity is what keeps us going, both in front of the camera and behind it, which is why we’ve assembled a team unlike any seen before—a group of talented and passionate artists who are working around the clock to bring this rich and incredibly beautiful world to life.
But in the end, the reason I decided to do this came down to one thing:
Somewhere out there, a young kid is sitting glued to their TV, waiting to be taken on an incredible journey. And I want to take them on it.
I hope you’ll come along too.”
Character descriptions:
“GORDON CORMIER (he/him) is AANG (12), a fearless and fun-loving twelve-year-old who just happens to be the Avatar, master of all four elements and the keeper of balance and peace in the world. An airbending prodigy, Aang is a reluctant hero, struggling to deal with the burden of his duties while still holding on to his adventurous and playful nature.
KIAWENTIIO (she/her) is KATARA (14), a determined and hopeful waterbender, the last in her small village. Though only fourteen, she’s already endured great personal tragedy, which has held her back from rising to her true potential, though it’s never dimmed her warm and caring spirit.
IAN OUSLEY (he/him) is SOKKA (16), Katara’s sardonic and resourceful 16-year-old brother. Outwardly confident, even brash, he takes his responsibility as the leader of his tribe seriously, despite his inner doubts over his warrior skills… doubts that he masks with his wit and deadpan sense of humor.
DALLAS LIU (he/him) is ZUKO (17), a skilled firebender and the intense and guarded Crown Prince of the Fire Nation. Currently roaming the world in exile, he’s on an obsessive quest to capture the Avatar because he believes that is the only way to reclaim his life and live up to the demands of his cruel and controlling father, the Fire Lord.”
