Which, admittedly, Sokka hadn’t actually planned for, but it’s fine. He can adapt to this. He just needs to shift a few words around in his brain, and--

And why does Zuko’s tone make this sound like a break up?

Every character interaction is just so so good and the way the tension gets ratcheted up and then unwound is captivating. I could gush about this fic all day, but instead I'll just leave it at: it's really, really good and you should read it.

Some Zukka Canon Divergence Fic Recs !

I'm a little bit insane about zukka canon divergence so here are some that I really enjoyed! All of these are on ao3 :)

Boomerangs and Rainbows by Mindbending, Rated T, 67,555 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death: One of my favorite Zukka canon divergence fics ever! Zuko dies at the North Pole and ends up haunting Sokka as a ghost. I am in love with how this author showed their developing relationship and trust in each other and it's just !! such a great plot, writing style, execution, and character writing.

Blue by bealeciphers, Rated T, 192,682 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence: Ba Sing Se + Blue Spirit zukka canon divergence 👀 A lot of crazy identity shenanigans with this one. This is Zuko pov so it has a lot of focus on Zuko's inner struggle, character arc, identity, and emotions and I think the author did really well! I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the,,,complicated identity concealment zukka going on here that led to some excellent conflict and complicated falling in love!

Operation Leverage by snowandfire, Rated T, 50,723 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: From Ba Sing Se onwards! Zukka fake dating au as Sokka forces Zuko to tell him stuff about fire nation culture :D I liked seeing them get closer! Enemies to friends to lovers my beloved

Leaving it All Behind by Sreeder, Rated M, 259,815 words, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con, Past Child Abuse, Torture, Nudity, Panic Attacks, Implied/Referenced Sexual Assault: This one is for those of you who like reading the dark stuff. I am someone who mostly likes to read more lighthearted things but I read this fic on recommendation and wow is it well-written! Sokka is captured during the siege on the Northern Water Tribe and sent to Zhao's prison camp. He runs into Zuko, and they eventually start working to escape together and get closer in the process. Very slowburn, very intense and dark, graphic depictions of torture and death. This has a completed sequel that continues their journey as well as a third book currently in the works!

I'm Not Angry Anymore by team_avatars_eyebags, Rated T, 69,430 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Alternate universe where Zuko and Iroh have been peacefully living on Kyoshi Island with secret identities for a good chunk of Zuko's banishment and then the gaang shows up and throw Zuko's entire semblance of peace and contentment out the window! This whole fic is technically pre-slash but I liked the concept and story too much to not include it here lol

boys are more trouble than they're worth by lesbianspikespiegel, Rated T, 11,128 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Some nice pretty fluffy and humorous Ba Sing Se Zukka! Getting to know each other, getting together, and the struggle of scrambling to hide your secret relationship from your friend group. Overall a very light-hearted and funny fic :D

Sokka is washed overboard while working on the fisherman's boat during the storm. He wakes on a deserted island.

Or... mostly deserted.

Chief Arnook never assigns Sokka to protect Princess Yue, so he goes to fight the Fire Nation with the other men. When the moon dies, and the ocean spirit takes its revenge, Sokka is caught standing on the deck of a Fire Nation ship. Sokka should have drowned… and he would have drowned, if not for a certain Fire Nation raft fleeing the North Pole.

[An enemies-to-lovers season 2 rewrite, where Sokka is separated from the gaang during the Siege of the North, and travels the Earth Kingdom with Zuko instead].

The world is a wild, strange place, and Zuko has spent his whole life searching for his place in it.

An accidental encounter with Prince Zuko forces Sokka to discover that desperate times call for desperate measures. Oh, and he's not telling that story to anyone.

Sokka isn't sure what Zuko is doing in the middle of a swamp, but what he is sure about is that it can't be good.

Book 3. Sokka/Zuko. Set after The Boiling Rock Pt. 2, Sokka and Zuko explore the Western Air Temple, where Sokka tries to get Zuko to talk about girls, marriage, and maybe even a future for the two of them.

Sokka and Zuko are both weird guys. Fortunately, they're the same kind of weird as each other.

Sokka thinks Ozai’s beach house is pretty awesome. Slightly less awesome is the couch he has to sleep on, as is accidentally getting into Zuko’s bed.

At first, that is.

Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the tower of Babel was built.

Just kidding- this will be a typical canon rewrite of the Avatar: The Last Airbender story with soulmates, Zukka, and languages!

Follow Sokka where he embarks on a journey around the world, following a strange monk who speaks in a dialect over 100 years old. Along the way, Sokka realizes he has a soulmate, depicted by the black lettering that appears on his wrist out on his journey. The only problem is, he can't read the writing for the life of him.

Sokka deals with the loss, heartbreak, and fear as he learns just who the name on his wrist belongs to. He embarks on a delicate journey of acceptance and grief, while Prince Zuko struggles to keep his cool while life throws anything it can at him. Follow the boys in the second book of the Lost in Translation series!

You know what? Before I read LIAB, I did NOT ship Zukka. I just started reading it because it was long enough and it sounded interesting. Idk how you did this, idk if I should curse you or thank you? I however still don't regret reading LIAB. But I have been exploring and trying to find more Zukka fics, trying to devide what read next. Any recommendations?

honestly i just adore this fic and have read it twice.

Firelord Zuko - ender of the Hundred Year War, ruler of the Fire Nation, payer of respects and reparations - takes advice and counsel from representatives of every nation, division, and specialty.

But teenage boy Zuko - friend of turtleducks, wielder of fun looking swords, stumbler over words and feet in the presence of cute boys - only listens to two people, and they are conspiring together to ruin him.

or: Iroh just wants what's best for his nephew, and Katara just wants to know everyone's business.

A Zukka classic that I will never be able to say enough good things about! Shan is a master storyteller and everything she writes leaves me in awe, and this series specifically houses some of the best fics I’ve ever read in any fandom. This had such a grip on me that I was reading this in every ounce of free time I had!

Exploring the relationship Sokka and Zuko could have if they knew each other in a different context, some really interesting and beautiful bending nuances, angst that hurts and makes you wish you could yell at them but makes the ‘good’ parts so much better, a hilarious Toph, and the kind of romantic scenes that make you put your phone down for a sec and kick your feet cause it’s so perfect… I can’t pick a favorite part (at least without spoiling anything) so just go read it if you haven’t!
