Let's see, off the beaten path definitely depends on the personal rabit holes you've fallen down, but some maybe less known fics I haven't seen mentioned as much:

The Best Laid Intentions Series by amidsizedfrog - a really fun, snappy, hilarious writing style, and a great Katara-Zuko bestie-ism dynamic throughout

How To Not Deal With a Fuck Or Die Situation by anarchycox - hilarious premise, hilarious execution. Anarchycox has a real talent for fully exploring absurdity in a way that feels approachable and real, I'd recommend all their stuff

Bae's Anatomy by aiyah - a fun established relationship dynamic in a Modern AU, and fun smut

The Road Between Action and Inaction by Donvex - a slower burn roadtrip AU, the way they got to know each other and got comfortable with each other was such a delight to read

i hate accidents except from when we went from friends to this by triplefire - a 5+1 full of accidental proposals and low-angst miscommunication, my favorite things lol

Mark Time by foil - this might be more on the beaten path, but if you want your heart ripped out of your chest, this will do it. Mind the tags though, it deals with some heavy topics (tastefully and well)

At The Top of the World by Lady_of_the_Flowers - might also be more on the beaten path, but I can never do a rec list without mentioning Lady of the Flowers amazing work. This is a Modern AU with such a great interpretation of the characters and canon dynamics into our world

Young Love by Kalira - I love me an external POV, and seeing the Zukka relationship through Hakoda's eyes in the Western Air Temple was so much fun

Also this list by @zukka-simp of Zukka authors who deserve a raise has been keeping me in fics for weeks now, checking out authors I hadn't heard of before

The sequel Ice Cave makes for a lovely epilogue.

Every character interaction is just so so good and the way the tension gets ratcheted up and then unwound is captivating. I could gush about this fic all day, but instead I'll just leave it at: it's really, really good and you should read it.

I wanted to keep this list to complete fics, but I do have to mention feels like we only go backwards by oldpotatoe, because although it's a WIP it is iconic.

Also, a personal favourite of mine that has been discontinued (but didn't end on a cliffhanger or anything) is invisible string by wilteddaisy (taotu). I have it saved to my phone as a PDF for when I need a comfort read, that's how much I love it.

Some Zukka Canon Divergence Fic Recs !

I'm a little bit insane about zukka canon divergence so here are some that I really enjoyed! All of these are on ao3 :)

Boomerangs and Rainbows by Mindbending, Rated T, 67,555 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death: One of my favorite Zukka canon divergence fics ever! Zuko dies at the North Pole and ends up haunting Sokka as a ghost. I am in love with how this author showed their developing relationship and trust in each other and it's just !! such a great plot, writing style, execution, and character writing.

Blue by bealeciphers, Rated T, 192,682 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence: Ba Sing Se + Blue Spirit zukka canon divergence 👀 A lot of crazy identity shenanigans with this one. This is Zuko pov so it has a lot of focus on Zuko's inner struggle, character arc, identity, and emotions and I think the author did really well! I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the,,,complicated identity concealment zukka going on here that led to some excellent conflict and complicated falling in love!

Operation Leverage by snowandfire, Rated T, 50,723 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: From Ba Sing Se onwards! Zukka fake dating au as Sokka forces Zuko to tell him stuff about fire nation culture :D I liked seeing them get closer! Enemies to friends to lovers my beloved

Leaving it All Behind by Sreeder, Rated M, 259,815 words, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con, Past Child Abuse, Torture, Nudity, Panic Attacks, Implied/Referenced Sexual Assault: This one is for those of you who like reading the dark stuff. I am someone who mostly likes to read more lighthearted things but I read this fic on recommendation and wow is it well-written! Sokka is captured during the siege on the Northern Water Tribe and sent to Zhao's prison camp. He runs into Zuko, and they eventually start working to escape together and get closer in the process. Very slowburn, very intense and dark, graphic depictions of torture and death. This has a completed sequel that continues their journey as well as a third book currently in the works!

I'm Not Angry Anymore by team_avatars_eyebags, Rated T, 69,430 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Alternate universe where Zuko and Iroh have been peacefully living on Kyoshi Island with secret identities for a good chunk of Zuko's banishment and then the gaang shows up and throw Zuko's entire semblance of peace and contentment out the window! This whole fic is technically pre-slash but I liked the concept and story too much to not include it here lol

boys are more trouble than they're worth by lesbianspikespiegel, Rated T, 11,128 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Some nice pretty fluffy and humorous Ba Sing Se Zukka! Getting to know each other, getting together, and the struggle of scrambling to hide your secret relationship from your friend group. Overall a very light-hearted and funny fic :D

Premise is Zuko vents about his feelings on a letter and accidentally send it on a messenger hawk. Sokka gets it because the hawk gets injured and the two start exchanging letters anonymously. 

Zuko’s Lost Days by AndyBoy, backatpatrickpark Words: 60k- Complete The Dai Li get Zuko during his fight with Jet and brainwash him into thinking he’s just a regular Ba Sing Se earth kingdom citizen named Li. Sokka runs into him and accdientally falls for him knowing that it’s Zuko. ANGST AND FLUFF YESSS

Chained by BlueEyedArcher Words: 360k- Ongoing No Bending AU where the SWT attacks a Fire Nation encampment and take Zuko as prisoner. Except Zuko was in disguise as a regular old Private under the false name Li, so they don’t know he’s the literal Prince of the Fire Nation. SLOOOOOW burn, it has a lot of stuff on SWT culture. Zuko’s a little different because Ursa’s around, Lu Ten is alive and Iroh is firelord.

Summary:

A Mulan (1998) with Zuko as Mulan and Sokka as Shang, but with many, many twists.

While the story is overall the same, I added the White Lotus as the group of old uncles because we need more of them.
