Hey there. Great question. It's totally possible to support yourself as an editor. I've done it, and so have other editors I know. However there are a few important things to consider before choosing editing as a career path.

Your chances of being a self-employed freelancer are extremely high. The number of in-house editing jobs in publishing are low and getting lower. While being self employed can give you a certain amount of flexibility, it also comes along with a lot of hustle and hassle, namely fluctuating income, a stupid amount of confusing tax paperwork, and the need to constantly promote yourself to clients in order to maintain steady work.

You probably won't make as much money as you'd think. Editing is one of the many skilled jobs that suffers from market saturation, which has sadly driven down the price the average client is willing to pay for editing services. I can't tell you the number of overqualified editors I know charging barely more than minimum wage for their work. Personally I've stuck to my guns about charging what I'm worth, but I've sometimes suffered by not having as much work as my colleagues who charge less.

Robots have already chipped away at the future of editing as a human occupation, and will continue to do so at exponential speed in the years ahead. They will never obliterate the job completely, as there will always be humans who prefer to work with humans instead of machines. But the outlook will become ever bleaker as more humans compete for fewer gigs, which in turn will drive down prices even further.

If you are also a writer, editing may adversely affect your writing. I don't mean that you'll become a worse writer, quite the opposite. My editing work has brought new depths to my writing, and I'm grateful for all I've learned by working with my clients. However, editing takes time, uses creative energy, and requires staring at a screen (or paper), and personally the more I edit, the less time/creativity/screen-staring capabilities I have left for my own writing.

If you mention you're an editor, someone will troll your post for a typo, grammatical error, or misused word, and then triumphantly point it out to you in the comments. This is mostly a joke. But it does happen every single time.

I hope this hasn't been too discouraging. If you feel a true passion for editing and really enjoy the work, none of the above should dissuade you. However, if you think you might be happy in any number of occupations, I'd honestly advise you to explore other options. Choosing a career path at this point in history is a gamble no matter what, but the outlook for editors is especially grim.

If you'd like to work with writers and aren't attached to being an editor, there are a few jobs (still freelance) that I believe will survive the coming robot apocalypse. Do a little Google research about "book coaches," "writing coaches," or "book doulas." These are people who act primarily as emotional supporters and logistical helpers for writers who are trying to get their book published or self published. Some of them do actual editing, but many do not, and due to the therapeutic nature of their work I believe they will flourish longer than editors in the coming robot apocalypse.

If you do explore editing as a path, the further away you can lean from spelling and grammar (e.g. proofreader or copyeditor), the longer your skills will be useful when competing with robots. AI still struggles to offer the same kind of nuanced, story-level feedback that a human can give. (Speaking from experience here--I'm a developmental editor and have yet to see a dent in my workload because of robots.) They'll catch up eventually, but it could be a while, and as long as there are human readers, there will always be humans who are willing to pay for a human perspective on their writing. Human spell checkers maybe not so much.

The proceeds will go to a new nonprofit, the Golden Globe Foundation, which will continue the H.F.P.A.’s philanthropic efforts; it gave more than $50 million to entertainment-related charities over the last three decades. Members of the foreign press association — primarily freelance entertainment journalists — will become employees of a yet-to-be-named for-profit entity that will try to expand the Golden Globes as a brand, according to an Eldridge spokesman. The former members (there are fewer than 100) will earn $75,000 annually for five years, with duties that include watching films and television shows and voting for the awards; and producing promotional materials, including writing articles for a Golden Globes website. It was unclear if the members could continue freelancing (mostly celebrity interviews) for publications overseas.

The Los Angeles Times discovered in 2021 that the H.F.P.A. had no Black members, setting off an outcry in the entertainment industry that resulted in NBC canceling the 2022 Globes telecast. The ceremony returned to NBC in January under a one-year agreement. Eldridge and Dick Clark Productions, which has produced the Globes telecast for decades, have since been looking for a new broadcast network or streaming service partner. The 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony has been scheduled for Jan. 7. In a statement, Mr. Boehly called the dissolution of the H.F.P.A. a “significant milestone in the evolution of the Golden Globes.” He thanked the association’s former president, Helen Hoehne, for helping push through reforms, including “a robust approach to governance” that had helped professionalize an awards entity long known for infighting and scandal. “We have a great team in place to grow this iconic brand,” Jay Penske, the chief executive of Penske Media, said in a statement. The foreign press association had long been viewed as unserious and slippery. In the late 1960s, the Federal Communications Commission had the Globes temporarily booted from the airwaves, saying it “misled the public as to how the winners were determined.” In the 1990s and 2000s, Harvey Weinstein, the since-imprisoned Miramax co-founder, manipulated the organization in ways big and small — expensive gifts and special access to stars and his own time, at a moment when other studio chiefs could barely hide their derision. He was often rewarded with a stunning number of nominations. Hollywood stopped turning a blind eye to the organization’s failings in 2021, after the killing of George Floyd in police custody in 2020 prompted a national conversation about racism and inequity. More than 100 publicists closed ranks, refusing to make stars available for Golden Globe appearances and contributing to NBC’s cancellation of the 2022 telecast.

What is a beta reader and beta reading?

Beta readers are a test audience for authors’ new books. This could include friends, family, or someone in the book community. It does not require any type of training or professional education. Beta readers receive book copies before they get released in order to give feedback to the author about their novel. Beta reading is typically the stage after proofreading and right before publishing.

How do authors benefit from beta readers

Beta reading helps an author by getting feedback from their future audience before publishing so they can make desired changes to improve the reception of their novel. This can save them time and money by fixing problems prior to publishing that have been missed. It also helps build readership for when the book releases, because beta reader will be able to post reviews, enticing others to read the novel.

How can you benefit from beta reading?

There are many ways to benefit from being a beta reader. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest reasons:

Free books: First and foremost, you get free books! To be a beta reader, you must love reading, so this is typically the biggest reason people want to become beta readers. You can get a small reprieve from buying books and just get them for free! All you need to give in return is your opinion.

Sense of accomplishment: Beta reading is a very important job and can determine the failure or success of a novel. You get to be a part of the team that can make a difference in peoples’ lives. One book can make all the difference to both authors and readers alike. You get a sense of joy, pride and accomplishment by helping.

Compensation: Most beta readers will never make money from this, most taking on this responsibility for the two aforementioned reasons. However, that doesn’t mean sometimes you can’t receive financial compensation for your feedback. Those with a reputation for strong book reviews or have lots of experience in reading and giving feedback can certainly make a profit for this service. Making money from beta reading could be done with some of the following options:

Freelancing: Using freelance websites such as Upwork or Fiverr, you can market yourself as a beta reader and get jobs from people and companies offering compensation to beta readers.

Websites: Work with companies such as OnlineBookClub to get paid for your reviews of new upcoming books.

Market yourself in communities: You can market yourself as a beta reader for compensation when joining writing communities and establishing yourself as a prominent and professional beta reader within communities such as BookTok, Bookstagram, Goodreads, LinkedIn, and more. If you’re willing to put the effort in, this can come with some great rewards.

Your Brand: Being a beta reader for authors and companies can greatly enhance your brand or recognition in the book and writing communities if you decide you want to do this for a long time, want to add it to other services you offer, or become a novelist yourself in the future. Working in the community can do great things if you want to become established in the future.

How do I become an amazing beta reader?

Beta reading isn’t the most complicated of jobs, but it does take talent, skills, and knowledge to be a superstar beta reader. Here’s some ways to stand out against the crowd.

Read. Simple enough, right? It almost seems like common sense, but the truth is, the more you read, the better you get at understanding novel structures and elements. It also gives you great practice to work on your critical thinking and analyzing skills.

Choose books only from your favourite genres. Authors are looking for people who are in their targeted audience, because they are the ones who will have the best knowledge of that genre and relate it to other readings they have done. So don’t beta read a mystery novel if you mostly read romance novels.

Be knowledgeable of how books work. Plots, characters, world building, and more can all differ based on genre, so you want to know how these elements may be missing or lacking for this specific novel in order to give your best feedback.

Understand the author’s desired target audience so you can tailor your feedback to help them write for their readers. You will then be capable of analyzing the reading level and explicit scenes to determine if they should be fixed or left as-is.

Understand what kind of answers will best help the author perfect their novel. Try reviewing questions such as this: Questions to ask your alpha/beta readers. Understanding what authors are looking for will give you a better idea of how to be most useful and become critical to your community.

Don’t give your personal opinions. What you may like, or prefer, can greatly differ from what is useful to the author. Instead of saying you don’t like it, or how you would like to see it written or played out, tell them what elements are causing you to not enjoy the novel. Learn to understand your dislike of something due to problems in the work versus personal preference.

Be completely honest, but honesty never needs to be brutal. The novel you read in a day could have taken that author months or years to write, and it would be their whole life. Be gentle in your feedback, and always assure you tell them what they are doing well, not only the mistakes.

I am currently taking a course to start copywriting/editing as a side gig to my main career. I have the basic writing and grammar skills required, so I am taking the course to familiarize myself with the job itself. That being said, do you have suggestions for how I might market those skills after completing this course to obtain some jobs? I have helped friends and family edit documents forever but I have no paid experience. My coworker suggested Upwork, which I might try, but I am still seeking outside suggestions.

Hi love! I would say to create a portfolio of your work/clips from any projects relevant to your industry from school, helping family/friends, or self-created mockups that are similar to the types of work/projects you want to do for clients. I think it's best to take a global/local approach here.

Online, I would market your services on Upwork/optimize your LinkedIn profile to potential copywriting clients in your niche/industry. Creating a website (even a blog if you have the time/energy) also legitimizes your presence. On a local level, I would pitch your local businesses (like coffee shops, hair salons, restaurants, etc. – depending on your niche, definitely do some research to see if they're hiring) to do some initial projects like social media copywriting or website copywriting for them to get your foot in the door (lower rates tend to be part of the game in the initial stages).

Also, I recommend pitching yourself to publications to do some freelance commerce writing in your niche to gain some free (and also paid even if the rates are low) press coverage for yourself. Friends and family/professional network referrals also are a goldmine if you have any available to work with.

Tips and Resources for Self-Publishing

Self publishing is amazing because you get to be in charge of literally every aspect of your book, your book’s publication, and your book’s distribution. But it’s a LOT to learn.

I'm going to put the rest of this under the break because it's a lot, but hopefully this helps anyone looking for tips and where to start!

First, I joined “Self Publishing Support Group” on Facebook where I asked way too many questions, and I also devoured YT videos by writers like: Bethany Atazadeh, Mandi Lynn, and Katie Wismer (Katesbookdate). For writing itself, I watched a ton of Abbie Emmons, Jenna Moreci, and Alexa Donne.

What you need to focus on:

The story itself. You HAVE to have a fantastic final product if you’re going to make it. The good news is you’re definitely 100% capable, but it takes diving in headfirst and absorbing everything you can. I watched a ton of videos from the above list, and read books like “Story Genius” by Lisa Cron, “Romancing the Beat” by Gwen Hayes, and “Plot & Structure” by James Scott Bell. (If you’d like more description about these books and others, please let me know!)

Editing. I’m a freelance editor, but I’m not going to lie and say you HAVE to have one to succeed. I didn’t. If you go the editorless route though, you do need to do multiple rounds of beta readers. You need other eyes on your work. If you do decide to work with an editor, consider working with me!

Formatting. Bethany Atazadeh has great videos on this. It has to look right and follow industry standards, or you’ll stick out as self-published. You’ll need to format not only the pages of your book, but also make decisions about the trim size, whether you’re doing ebook, paperback, hard cover, or a combination, as well as other options like page color and cover coating/finish, etc.

Cover design. The downfall of most self-published books in my opinion is an unprofessional cover that doesn’t follow genre expectations. If you aren’t also an artist and you aren’t confident in your skills, you should outsource this. Mandi Lynn is a cover designer and has some videos about it.

Publishing services. You need to decide what you’ll use. Amazon KDP, Ingramspark, Lulu, Book Baby, Draft2Digital, Barnes & Noble, etc. They are all different, and different ones are right for everyone. (I personally used Ingramspark, Amazon KDP, and Draft2Digital, but in the future I am only going to use Amazon KDP. I can talk about my experiences with these services more if you’d like.)

Creating an imprint. Most publishing services will offer you a free ISBN, but what they don’t tell you is that THEY’LL be listed as the publisher, not you. You can buy a pack of 10 ISBNs from Bowker.com (official distributor, ONLY for the US) for $295, and list yourself as the publisher, or create an imprint like I did. I publish with Suncat Publishing, which is named after my kitty. To shops and buyers though, it looks way more professional and doesn’t cause self-publishing suspicion.

The launch. This is huge! Set a launch date (industry standard is a Tuesday), decide how/if you’re going to use ARC readers, decide if you’ll do preorders, maybe do a cover reveal, add your book to Goodreads, plan your party… The list goes on! Thankfully most of the YouTubers I listed above talk about their launch tips and experiences.

Tips:

Never pay anyone to publish your book. They’re scammers. (Paying upload fees to sites such as Ingramspark is different.)

You probably won’t get into physical retail bookstores. Don’t get too down about it. You can still reach out directly to indie bookstores. They’ll likely do a consignment deal, but they may buy up front for a 40-55% discount.

Do as much research as you can about everything that you can. Knowledge is power, and if you research everything obsessively for months, you’ll be able to write a post like this one, which is hopefully helpful!

Publishing can get expensive. Skip whatever you want, and splurge for the things you think are important. Theoretically, you could publish on Amazon 100% free.

"Why would I want to hide that I'm self-published?" I know some of my tips make it seem like you want to appear traditionally published at all costs, but that's not true! It can just give you a better shot at being taken seriously if people can't tell your book apart from a traditional one. It's nothing to be ashamed of, though! Indie publishing is magical!

Do what you want! This is your book, and you get to do it your way. Don’t let me or anyone else tell you what to do if you don’t want to do it that way!
