In the Ravenous Dark real time read along.
(99 pages late but uuuuh let's pretend I was doing this from the get go.)
Pg: 100
So I had an idea Kineas was a fucking creep like his father but damn, he's already a rapist. Welp, there goes the hope it's not too late for him to change his ways. A fucking rapist just like his Dad. 🙃

I recently got a book from the library, named In the Ravenous Dark by A. M. Strickland, fascinated by the title and blurb, and took it home and read it. IT WAS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ, NOT KIDDING. I found me a new favorite book and I'm planning on getting to the bookstore and buying myself a copy. 10/10 would recommend.

So, I really need some book recommendations.
I usually read fantasy but I also like dystopian, sci-fi and stuff. As long as it's fictional. I also like rewrites (if that makes sense).
Tumblr media
Since the request wasn't super specific, for this one I just picked a couple of very different fantasy books that I read recently and have not yet discussed. I don't have a lot of recent dystopian (publishing currently believed dystopian is dead, I think). For sci-fi, check out this post
Little Thieves by Margaret Owen is a retelling of the Goose Girl. That's a relatively unknown Grimm fairytale where a wicked maid steals the identity of a princess. This book tells the story of the maid, Vanja Schmidt, who is the adopted daughter of Fortune and Death. She used to be Princess Gisele's maid, until she stole Gisele's enchanted pearl necklace that changes her appearance and takes her place. Now, Vanja leads a double life as princess and jewel thief, seeking to make enough money to escape before she has to marry her creepy fiance, and so she can escape her mothers. But when she crosses the wrong god, she is cursed to slowly turn into a statue of jewels as punishment for her greed, unless she finds a way to make up for what she stole. I'd recommend this book if you like unlikeable main characters.
Vanja is very selfish, but she if she doesn't put herself first, no one else will, so it is definitely understandable. She has a tendency to push everyone away, but deep down she's very lonely. She's a gremlin, and I love her.
There are also some very charming side characters, including the daughter of the god who cursed Vanja, a shape shifter who does not quite understand human behavior, and a prefect (a magic detective of sorts) chasing the jewel thief.
This book also makes some great social commentary on class and wealth. Vanja might have done a bad thing stealing Gisele's life, but Gisele wasn't entitled to all that wealth and prestige in the first place, and this book heavily criticizes nobility.
The Forever Sea and the Endless Song are part of a series and I have only read book 1 so far (book 2 just came in yesterday). This is an adult fantasy series and as such it is heavier on the world building and more complicated than most YA fantasy, so if you've only ever read YA fantasy I don't think this is the best book to transition into adult, but if you're used to reading adult this is a good series to try.
The Forever Sea is one of the most unique fantasies I've read, and this mainly lies in the world building. The premise of this world is an ocean made out of very high grassland. Ships can sail on this grass with the help of a magic hearthfire, and if this fire would go out you would very slowly sink beneath the grass. Sailors go out onto the sea mainly to harvest all sorts of plants used for food and medicine.
Kindred was raised by her grandmother, the Marchess, a legendary captain and hearthfire keeper. When her grandmother disappears beneath the sea, everyone assumes it was a suicide. But Kindred finds a note from her grandmother implying that it was not suicide, but that she was searching for what is down at the bottom of the sea, and might still be alive there. So Kindred sets out to find her, traveling across the Sea and through a legendary pirate city to see if her grandmother could still be out there, and what is at the bottom of the sea.
This book is very plot driven with a huge emphasis on the environment and descriptions on it, but also lots of world building on how this works exactly. There isn't a lot of emphasis on it, but there is also a sapphic relationship in here between the main character and another sailor. As I said, I haven't read book 2 yet but will start it soon. It's also not out in the US yet (coming 14th February, but the UK edition was released already) From the reviews I gathered there's going to be a third (last? idk) book.
In the Ravenous Dark is a dark fantasy that is marketed as YA, but I think it's very upper YA, maybe more NA but publishing doesn't think that is a thing, so YA it is.
This is set in a world inspired by ancient Greece, but only vaguely (clothes, buildings etc, much of the world building is completely made up), and Rovan, the main character, is a blood mage. Since her father's death, she's kept her blood magic hidden, but when her magic is revealed she is taken to the palace and bound to Ivrilos, a dead spirit who can control here, which is something that is done to all blood mages.
Rovan falls in love with two people she can't trust, the spirit Ivrilos, and princess Lydea, another blood mage, and together they uncover a plot of what is going on in the world of the dead and living, and why blood mages must be bound to spirits.
I think the magic system in this book was very well done, including the way spirits work and the realm of the dead. The book was at times a little messy, and I think it might have worked better as a duology since there was so much going on, but I don't bother me much while reading it.
There's a poly relationship between Rovan, Ivrilos and Lydea, which I really liked, and there's Japha, a really cool non binary side character who's essentially the fourth part of the found family.
Unseelie by Ivelisse Housman is a YA fae fantasy set in a second world focusing on an autistic main character
Seelie is a changeling. Though she looks exactly like her twin Isolde, she's actually a fae creature trying to control her unpredictable magic. She and her sister had to flee their home due to prejudice against changelings, and end up stealing to survive. When they get caught up in a heist gone wrong, they team up with unexpected allies to go on a quest and unravel a mystery to do with fae and human history.
The plot of this book is what you'd expect from a YA fantasy, fast paced, not super unpredictable or anything. The strenght of this book is the main character. Seelie is autistic and written by an autistic author, and while it is set in a world where the term autism does not exist, it is portrayed really well and I found Seelie very relatable as an autistic person. In this world, changelings are typically autistic (because real world changeling myths often derive from disabled children, including autistic children). The sister relationship is also intersting, because Seelie and Isolde are so different, and have very different ideas of what their life should be like once they're finished with this quest.
It is the first in a duology and I have no clue when book 2 is coming out
The last book on this list is the Dream Runners by Shveta Thakrar which is a contemporary fantasy inspired by Indian mythology, specifically, the naga. Naga in this world can't dream on their own, so they have children taken from the human world who become dream runners. They travel to the human world to collect dreams from humans for the naga.
Tanvi is such a dream runner, she's been in Nagalok for the past 7 years. Dream runners don't dream themselves and are devoid of emotion, but for Tanvi this is slowly returning and she's desperate to make it stop.
Venkat is a dreamsmith, the only human in Nagalok who is not a dream runner. Instead, he shapes dreams collected by the dream runners into dream stones used by the naga.
They team up to figure out what is going on with Tanvi, and uncover a plot that could destroy the naga world.
I loved the creative world building in this book, with how the dream runner system works. Tanvi was a little difficult to relate to at first, because she was very obsessed with earning a charm bracelet in exchange for her dreams and I found this confusing, but this will make sense later on, and this book had some twists I really liked.
I hope this helps!

Hi my name is Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that’s how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don’t know who she is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I’m also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Hogwarts in England where I’m in the seventh year (I’m seventeen). I’m a goth (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.

Ok. It's time to review In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland she/they
WRITING STYLE: Easy to digest but does a lot more telling than showing and on top of it, heavy handed with telling us how bad and cartooonishly evil the men are and how misogynistic the kingdom is. Thank you Strickland, I would have never known they were misogynistic if the narrator didn't emphasize how women are treated. Thank you Strickland, for emphasizing that what the men are saying to Rovan are in fact threats. I'm too clueless to read between the lines myself. They italicized every heavy handed piece of info she wanted to tell you instead of you know...showing.
The writing style is weak in another way too. She tries to write deep and poetic lines but it comes off as juvenile with little pay off due to how little build up the bonds and subsequent betrayals had.( I will explain more later)
WORLD BUILDING: The world building is barely enough to understand the fights and why blood mages are getting married off but not enough to understand if there is a limit to this power? What some sygils mean? How do you get better at using the sygils?(Don't be vague and just say train. How! What does the training look like. We get a spar but I'm sure that's a small part of the training) is reading sygils like learning a whole new language? How do you make new sygils? Why must the parents die to pass on their lineage? These things are all hinted at my skimmed over and never expanded upon. Don't even get me started on death magic. I have about the same amount of questions and being a revenant *cough cough* a vampire *cough cough* is introduced a little past the half way point and if death magic and blood magic wasn't elaborated on, you know damn well being a vampire/undead was not expanded upon. I'd say becoming a vampire is pretty much the Dues Ex Machina for this book but I can't say for certain cause it's hinted at there being a big sacrifice but Lydea easily becomes a vampire too without regrets so besides crying blood and looking sickly...what is the problem? Drinking blood? But the Queen of Skyllea said vampires can live off of animal blood soooo. There is no issue? See, that's another problem, the consequences of magic are a blurry line whenever characters have to suffer consequences due to not-so- established laws of the world.
I'm going to sound like a broken record when I say this book should have been a duology. Maybe a trilogy but a standalone was too short and the world building suffered for it.
PLOT: The plot is great but terrible execution. It's fast paced nature means there are no boring parts or filler. (I'm grateful for that but I would have taken a few boring chapters if the characters got to grow more.)There are possible mini plot threads that go nowhere. Penelope being possibly trans herself but forced to play the role of a princess? It goes nowhere but is brought up twice. Why? I'd say for diversity tokens but other characters seem to gloss over it aside for the NB character, Japha. (I will get into this more later) An even more relevant plot point was Tyros being a woman beater and rapist but it's refered to as rumors when first brought up. Cool, maybe we'll get some detective work. Nope. It's only ever brought to remind us how EVil he is. Which is fine but there is no depth to him and it all reads as pointless because it doesn't effect the story other than give Rovan a reason to hate his guts and for us to hate him. There are other plot threads that could have been expanded upon but I will talk about it more when I go over characters. Speaking of which-
CHARACTERS: Rovan and maybe Ivrilos are the only fleshed out characters. Which is crazy because every character introduction gives crumbs as to what I could have learned about. Penelope's duty vs identity. Tumarq's affair with Penelope and her sister. Which I never learned how Penelope felt about her sister. Another thing that could have given her depth. Crisea's dynamic with Rovan's father vs her biological father. Hell, even her dynamic with her mother would have sufficed. Why was Lydea hated by her father? How did she feel about her mother? It was hinted at that she used to have so much in common with her twin. What was it and when did her brother become a rapist? Japha is barely tolerated by their family due to their gender but why do they hate being a blood mage outside of it the sygils looking bad on their skin and maybe because their sisters death. Will never know. It's brought up once and never again. Crumbs, crumbs, crumbs. Nothing more. I can't say the author should have never brought these things up in the first place but I think Strickland wanted to do so much but cut herself short by making this book a standalone. The cast did feel necessary and it could have been rife with more political intrigue if the characters and plot had been given a chance to prosper. But I'll say Japha and Lydea are the biggest let downs due to their relevancy to the mc. Japha's biggest trait is how much of a loyal friend they are but they comes too close to being the comedy relief character for my liking. Despite having their own reason for wanting to leave the kingdom(the bigotry), they're always there to tag along for the Rovan's sake. The quirky best friend that never disagrees with the mc and is their glorified lapdog. Lydea is the least fleshed out and that is a crime due to her role as one for the love interests AND the reason Strickland can peddle this flimsy so-called poly and sapphic rep. All you'll ever know about Lydea is she's a lesbian, hates her dad, wants to escape her Kingdom and cares about her sister. None of these things are elaborated on. Good news! Rovan is a flawed character done alright. She has her annoying and dumb moments but not the most insufferable mc I've had to read about.
THE ROMANCE: The romance is supposed to be a big selling point but there is no chemistry between Rovan and Ivrilos and Lydea. It's your common insta love YA romance. Juvenile, petty, laughable and unbelievable. They're professing their love to each other and it's been a little over a month? (Lydea x Rovan happened in less than a month)They're hurt by one another's betrayal? Why? You barely knew this person? They all look dumb and childish for trusting someone so soon when they all have good reasons NOT to trust them. And what TF was that first scene with Rovan and Lydea. They fell in love, day 1? They were making out with each other day one. Let that sink in. Nothing besides insta lust is shown between. Making out and flirting is all they do with each other. The only conversations they have has to do with escaping and their subsequent break up then make up scene in the book. Do they share hobbies? Do they know the others favorite foods? Bland flirting and making out isn't chemistry, and I'm starting to think authors don't know what "chemistry between characters mean." Rovan betraying Lydea is supposed to be this heartbreaking scene. Lydea's death is supposed to be a heartbreaking scene too. I do not care about either of these scenes because I don't even know why they like each other other than they are both women and "hot". How can I root for a pairing that gives me no reason to root for them. There are no cute scenes to contrast to what are supposed to be heart breaking. It's like killing off a character five minutes after being introduced. I can't care because I haven't given time or reasons to care and connect.
Ivrilos is more developed but he is a terrible love interest for a different reason. He's your run of the mill YA bodyguard. Shrouded in mystery, dark, royalty unbelievably old but still youthful and "hot," could hurt but won't cause he's "A nicE GuY that's MisunDerstooD." Did I mention his mom is dead and he's sad about it and craves revenge cause he has daddy issues and he's calm and- *yawn* Ok, on to my other gripes with him.
If this story was a duology, maybe it could have fixed his romance with Rovan. Maybe a well written enemies to lover and a deep dive into power dynamics but nooooope. He's over 400 yrs old and he's acting like a love sick puppy over this 19 yr old. I can't say it's cause she's SPeCiAl because she's strong thanks to her powers being handed to her. She doesn't earn any of her cool powers. She's a little feisty. That's all. Yes, he hasn't been around women in so long but that explains his desire to get his dick wet, not falling in love with her. Let me put this into perspective, he's been playing the waiting game for over 400 years to take revenge on his father but Rovan comes along and he's ready to throw it all away for her? Why? He's been letting women be thrown to the wolves for over 400yrs and I'm supposed to think he's different and a worthy love interest? Are you kidding me?! He's no different than his father and brother in regards to how disposable women are to him. Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this if the author was going a morally grey route and didn't try and brush off his actions as just a misunderstood guy with a noble and cause that's a tiny bit selfish while painting the other men as monsters. Rovan almost reaches a point in realizing how bad he is for willing to have her get raped by her fiance so she can produce an heir for Ivrilos to leach on to. So close but saying the "Ivrilos is willing to have me get raped for his plans" part aloud would push a lot of readers away from this "Dream boat" of a man. The author is not sneaky with leaving his intentions to be read between the lines when every other time, Strickland was heavy handed with all the raoe threats being passed around like candy. Ew. That argument was honestly the moment I completely checked out involving every romance scene having to do with them. I can't comprehend why Rovan would still have feelings for him after that debacle. It doesn't matter that he gave up the plans later. It all happened too soon for me to look the other way when it came to Ivrilos. Wait, I can comprehend why Rovan still loves him! It's because Strickland says so. You can write as many girl bosses that fight their oppressive systems, refuse to bow to men and can fight but it's all performative if the mc ends up with a guy that's a piece of trash. It's 2023, why are male love interests being forgiven cause he's sad and angsty. 🥺 You want me to like this man, don't have double standards for him or write him as an ACTUALLY good man.
Oh, did I forget to mention he drained the life out of her father, assisting in making him a weak and submissive man sent to an early grave. But that's glossed over after a vague mention of it. Yup. Rovan sure loves her father until it gets in the way of her getting dicked down by a ghost man. A truly YA moment.
Last but not least
REPRESENTATION: This is another big thing the author tries to make a big selling point so I will be reviewing it. It's not good. Rovan is shown multiple times throughout the book to love more than one gender. Ok. That's good.
I want to add Penelope but her identity is never expanded upon. Unfortunate, cause it could have been interesting discussing how it can be living as a closeted trans dude that is also a parent.wasted potential, I'll tell you that much.
Japha is alright as an NB. it's hinted at that they're AMAB. Not something often seen in fiction so a point for that. Them being asexual is not too good. Every make out or sex scene Japha is forced to witness gives off the icky 3rd-or should I say fourth wheel treatment. It's played off as a joke. Haha, the asexual friend is forced to see or walk in on the allo's being allo. Rubs me the wrong way, however, not as much as their unnecassary death. Yes, they come back... As a ghost...forever connected to Lydea. Sure they are friends that are close but I have a hard time believing any friend, much less an ace friend would want to be forever tied to their allo friend who will be making out and having sex with their other friend for ever and ever. Forever stuck as the fourth wheel. Yup. Screw whatever dreams or adventures they want to do. Screw their privacy. Why do they need it. They're ace, what asexual has dreams, aspirations. And let me clarify, they are not aromantic, so they have to essentially throw away any possibility of a future love life because they are a ghost. Well that's lovely. I'd be less bitter about it if Lydea was also forced to be a ghost but she conveniently is vampire like Rovan. Why couldn't Japha be one. Japha's sister and Bethea both have death magic. Couldn't both Japha and Lydea be vampires? Why was Japha the big sacrifice? Why did they die in the first place just to have a Dues Ex Machina? It's bad writing to kill off characters, then bring them back at the end. It reeks of an author trying to make the audience sad without proper pay off and most importantly makes the stakes weak if not null and void. Idk if it would have been better to keep the dead or not cause both options suck and read as low-key unnecessary. It's a mess. Soooo the ace rep is 👎
The sapphic rep doesn't get much better. Bethea and Crisea get together off page and have no chemistry because of it. Lydea says they make a cute couple. That doesn't work for me because it is telling and not showing. Their chemistry is so non existent in fact, that I didn't bother to bring them up in the romance section. I would have let it slide because they are minor characters but Rovan x Lydea is no better. Like I said, Rovan and Lydea have an insta-lust relationship. Making out with each other the day they meet and nothing much else grows between them worth mentioning. What IS worth mentioning is the clear bias Strickland has for Rovan x Ivrilos. Dare I say Lydea was an afterthought or there for the sake of diversity points. Ivrilos x Rovan isn't great but they have more time spent together. He's already her ghost guardian. Forever with her 24/7 but they couldn't have squeezed in some more time for Lydea x Rovan? Rovan and Ivrilos have more conversations, Rovan talks about him more and if that isn't damning enough, Lydea's sex scene with Rovan is a small paragraph(Leading up to the sex) and then a fade to black, while 2 almost 3 pages are dedicated to a sex scene between Ivrilos and Rovan. And there is no fade to black. And this book was getting preached for the sapphic parts. The poly too- it's not poly, it's a glorified live triangle because Lydea and Ivrilos do not love each other. They meet each other towards the END of the book. The "poly" rep is the worst rep in this book
2/5 stars

-Voices-
A collection of portraits depicting the voices from Slay the Princess, taking inspiration from the style of the video game Disco Elysium! The Voice of the Hero, a knight, an iconic silhouette against a luminant halo. A color palette of black, blue, and teal.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Hunted, a beast trying to protect its heart from danger, represented here as a crosshair.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Smitten, the knife wound letting loose lovely streams of swirling bodily juices into the air.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Cold, dark, and angular. Something completely unafraid to kill.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Skeptic, attempting to fly, tearing himself away from chains and what looks like his own body.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Paranoid, Frantic and multi-eyed, clutching at a wound.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Contrarian, flying in stark contrast to the others, glowing instead of secluded, a mischievous fairy or will o' the wisp, instead of a grotesque figure.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Broken, shattered and leaking. A humanoid figure is no longer recognizable.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Stubborn, Fiery eyes, and big meaty claws. The brushwork is chaotic.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Cheated, smoke leaking from puncture wounds still embedded within him. He's holding a cigar, too; probably where all the smoke is coming from.
Tumblr media
The Voice of the Opportunist, carrying multiple masks on his person, and wielding a poorly concealed knife.
Tumblr media
And finally (for now) The Long Quiet itself, the night sky, swirling sigils blurred in the dark.

Trigons Backup Plan
So! Trigon knew from the moment his Daughter was taken in by the Monks of Azarath that it would be difficult to turn her to his will. He wasn't stupid, he knew just how hard it would be to make his daughter turn on everything she has ever known in her (very short) life.
He can't really blame her, even he believed that indiscriminate mass murder was wrong until his mid-200's, he just needs to wait for her to grow out of it.
But until then he still needs a way into the DC Universe. And if his daughter wouldn't help, then he could always just make a 2nd one.
So, he searches and eventually finds a Couple of Scientists who seem to be good targets. They are researching Magic and Ghosts, so he makes a Demonic Pact with them. He will give them the secrets needed to complete their Research, and in exchange all he asks is that they help him bare a child.
They agree, and Danny Fenton is born.
Danny was supposed to become a Hellmouth when he turned 16, unlocking his Demonic Powers and opening the way for Trigon to enter the DC Universe so he could conquer it.
Instead he managed to get himself killed at 14. Then he managed to come back to life as a Halfa, he got himself adopted by Clockwork, and he usurped the Throne of the Infinite Realms in the span of 1 year, therefore putting himself on the same level as his Father on the cosmic scale.
So there goes his Backup Plan.
Dammit.
...
Meanwhile Raven is panicking. She had been messing around with her Friends when they asked about the Spells she could do, and she off-handedly mentioned that she could cast Family Tracking Spells.
One thing led to another, and they all wanted to know if they had secret family. Then they asked if she wanted to try as well, and for some reason she agreed.
And long story short, she has a little brother somehow. A little brother who is only a few weeks away from turning 16, who doesn't know the Azarathian Spells she learned to prevent his own transformation into a Hellmouth.
Oh shit...
