“I think there are lives that make it easy to be good. Or what most people call good. When you have wealth, status, family, it’s easy to be a saint, it costs you nothing. I can’t say if you’re a good person or not. But the more I know of you, the more I understand that the world keeps making you choose between survival and martyrdom. No one should fault you for wanting to live.”

Once upon a time, there was a girl as cunning as the fox in winter, as hungry as the wolf at first frost, and cold as the icy wind that kept them at each other's throats.

I can’t believe Margaret Owen named the final book “Holy Terrors” after giving us THAT ending on the previous book and expect us to be okay

Once upon a time, there was a girl cold as winter, greedy as a king, lonely as an orphan. She was a liar, a thief, and a wicked maid, who stole from the family that took her in and threw her lady mistress to the wolves. She did what it took to survive, and would not martyr herself for anyone.

I don't know what's worse: that he slipped into my heart like a knife, or that I like the feel of him there.

If I had a nickel for every time a character talked about their love interest’s “tells” when it comes to The Thing They’re Really Good At in a fairly emotionally charged setting, I’d have two nickels.
Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen
This is a heist book! I can’t believe I haven’t read more heist books, I love heists. It's also a fairy tale retelling! Our main character is Vanja, who is just… a little scamp. Actually she’s a schemey little gremlin, and I love that for her. She’s very focused on taking care of herself because she has learned that no one else will take care of her.  Vanja spends a very long time determined to do everything on her own. She looks out for herself because no one else will, not without wanting something from her. Getting her to participate in a team activity is like trying to herd a teleporting cat. She has a rocky road on her way through this book, but I liked how she landed.
