It’s really interesting to me how Big Mama tailored each of the Turtle’s Battle Nexus New York Matches to line up with things that the Turtle defined themselves by.

Big Mama: Each of you is linked to an enemy and you will need to work together to complete a challenge against one of my Battle Nexus Champions!

In the episode Battle Nexus New York, Big Mama separates the Turtles, forces them to work with an enemy & gives them a challenge to beat but something I find kind of interesting is how personal Big Mama made each challenge regarding the Turtles.

Big Mama: Enjoy wrestling my Troll! Loose and I’ll add your flattened body-boos to my hotel rug collections

At first glance Raph’s Battle Nexus New York match is rather simple, it’s winning a fight & it appears to be geared towards Raph’s love of wrestling to the point where he’s even teaming up with his favourite wrestler Ghost Bear.

Raph: Go Ghost Bear! He’s the greatest ever!

But Raph’s Battle Nexus New York challenge also fits with how Raph is ‘the smashing guy’ of the Mad Dogs, Raph’s Battle Nexus New York challenge almost feels like a commentary on how Raph’s go to strategy is often ‘hit the problem until it stops being a problem’.

Raph: I guess it does double the problem, which means double the smashing

Raph: Here’s the plan, we smash our way in and keep smashing until we’ve smashed that armour piece right into our smashy little hands

Big Mama making Raph’s challenge a wrestling match isn’t just putting Raph’s life in danger with something he loves, it’s also her challenging his strength & his typical go to smashing strategy for solving problems.

Big Mama: You two must satisfy my two headed snakes endless appetite or it’s you chefs who become lunch

Mikey’s Battle Nexus New York challenge seems to line up with his interest in cooking at first glance but the fact that the challenge involves satisfying both heads plays on how Mikey constantly tries to play the therapist or the mediator for his family.

Mikey: Problem Donald?

Mikey: Yay! Everybody’s happy!

Whenever two family members aren’t getting along Mikey typically tries to step in & fix it as seen when he steps in the moment Shelldon & Donnie start arguing in the episode Breaking Purple or how he’s constantly trying to get Splinter & Draxum to get along in the episode Hidden City’s Most Wanted.

Big Mama’s challenge to Mikey isn’t just a test of his cooking skills or his love for cooking, it’s a challenge towards Mikey’s need to try & make everyone happy because Mikey’s challenge involves satisfying BOTH heads.

Big Mama: My Sprite has never smiled and has a wicked temper make her laugh or she’ll burn you worse than a well timed joke, pun intended!

Leo’s Battle Nexus New York Challenge is a direct challenge to Leo’s status as the ‘face man’, something that Leo even picks up on because once he receives the challenge from Big Mama, as he says that making people laugh is ‘his thing’

Leo: Make her laugh? That’s my thing!

Since the earliest episodes its been shown that Leo tends to define himself by his humour using it as both a coping mechanism & trying to define his place on the team with it.

Leo: What I can’t make a joke in the middle of the craziest thing ever? That’s how I cope

Leo: And who doesn’t love my one liners? They fire up the team! Right, guys?

However Leo’s jokes along with a lot of his other actions are primarily masks that he uses to influence both people’s perceptions of him as well as helping Leo trick others into acting in a way he wants. Yes his jokes & his ‘not taking things seriously attitude’ are coping mechanisms but they also help make Leo’s opponents underestimate him which he uses to his advantage, as seen when he was able to outmanoeuvre Big Mama in the episode Many Unhappy Returns

Leo: I’m the face man! People love me!

Big Mama’s challenge to Leo isn’t simply about making Sprite laugh because Leo likes making jokes, it’s about challenging Leo’s ability to manipulate others as it involves getting someone to do something that he wants them to do.

Big Mama: Cortex is the smartest Yokai in the Hidden City and the cruelest loose and he keeps the Turtle in his collection of game pieces

Donnie’s Battle Nexus New York Challenge involves a chess match, seemingly combining Donnie’s love of chess with his need to prove himself as ‘the smart one’. We already knew that Donnie had a love of chess from the episode Mind Meld but what Big Mama might actually be challenging Donnie on is his ability to rely on others

Donnie: Scooch over Hypno, chess is my domain

When Donnie is given his Battle Nexus New York Challenge he immediately tries to take over the situation only to find that he’ll be playing the part of the chess pieces, this is most likely Big Mama making commentary on the fact that Donnie often tries to gain control over certain situations & ‘fix problems’.

Donnie: I think I have a little something to kick our skills into high gear

Donnie: I have created something that will make us unstoppable

In the episodes Donnie’s Gifts & Mind Meld we see Donnie attempt to ‘fix’ his brothers either by trying to correct their ‘flaws’ or by trying to make them more like him. Which shows Donnie’s habit of trying to take control of situations & ‘fix’ what’s gone wrong. Donnie is a fixer so when he sees something that he thinks needs fixing it means that he personally has to fix it.

Donnie: Lightbulb! I have a solution!

The episode Donnie VS Witchtown gave an insight that Donnie doesn’t like leaving problem solving to others because he wants to feel needed & useful, which is why he’s always so desperate to ‘fix’ things that he thinks have gone wrong because that’s how he feels useful so for Donnie it would be difficult to do nothing, because if he lets someone else solve the problem he doesn’t know how to feel useful.

By turning Donnie into a chess piece & making him reply on Hypno to win the game of chess Big Mama is challenging Donnie to put his faith in someone else to solve the problem for him in a situation where Donnie knows he can fix the problem himself.

Donnie: We are victorious Hypno!

At first glance Big Mama’s Battle Nexus New York Challenges to the Turtles seem to line up with the Turtles special interests; Raph’s love of wrestling, Mikey’s love of cooking, Leo’s love of making jokes & Donnie’s love of Chess but in reality Big Mama’s challenging the things that make up the Turtle’s identities.

Big Mama is challenging Raph’s go to smashing strategy, she’s challenging Mikey’s need to be a mediator, she’s challenging Leo’s ability to manipulate others & she’s challenging Donnie on whether he can let other people solve problems he could solve himself. The Battle Nexus New York Challenges are kind of personal & I find that pretty interesting.

How about Tokoyami, Shinsou, Tenya, and Sero with a playful childlike s/o who always smiling (like they could have literally be in a serious fight and they’ll be cracking jokes and giggling throughout).

I started writing this last night and don't have time to finish it this morning, so sorry, we're missing Sero. I'll try and come back and add him after work.

Tenya gets migraines with you and your coping mechanism. You are his precise opposite, seeing rules as a suggestion and life as a reason to have fun.

Even during fights, you're laughing in villains' faces and providing witty one liners. He'll admit to cracking a smile every now and again, particularly when you've verbally roasted the enemy, but still you can't always treat life like a joke.

People are three dimensional, no one's happy 100% of the time, so when that crash does happen, Tenya has a way of being there.

He doesn't gawk at the lack of a smile on your face, or try and get you to laugh again, he lets you breathe, with no pressure to be your "usual self", you get to relax, truly relax.

Tenya invites you to his room to do your studying, claiming he's created the optimal environment for it in his dorm.

It usually results in you being so comfortable you end up spilling your guts to him, or falling asleep somewhere utterly random.

Tenya never complains, keeps inviting you week after week, to give you that little moment where you don't need to be the jester.

Shinsou won't lie, it was downright annoying at first.

Both you and Kaminari, high-energy balls of go go go!

He doesn't know how you do it, he's tired just looking at you, always with that infuriating...gorgeous, sunny smile on your face. You have the audacity to light up the world without really trying, you make a joke out of everything.

In grave situations though, that sense of humour of yours turns...sinister.

"Welp, we're getting our asses kicked, but at least we're doing it with style!"

"Sure, let's all march into the corridor of destruction, I'm sure Bakugou won't laugh too much as he blows us to teeny tiny pieces!"

"My ass is going to get firmly kicked, but hey, we're learning right?"

The sarcasm was on the mark every time, and you didn't seem to care that Jirou levels you with the death glare to end all death glares, it's all in good fun.

Your humour sometimes alienates you, Shinsou's seen it, but it never seems to be reason to make you stop. That smile turns out to be your little rebellion of self, and Shinsou loves you for it.

Tokoyami was drawn to you from the start, which made you quite the ironic pair. You were a ray of sunshine, almost literally (bonus points if you have a light based quirk), and he...was not.

He tries not to be dower and depressing, he does have a sense of humour, and you have a way of making him laugh in the oddest situations.

Hawks took you both on for the workstudy and ended up meeting the bloody dynamic duo, you blend seamlessly together and help each other keep up with the feathered menace. Alone, either of you is a force to be reckoned with, but together?

People joke that the two of you are joined at the hip, but you can't help it when there's an innate comfort in his presence, he doesn't even have to try.

The quiet moments are his, when you both fall silent in your room and just...exist together. Sharing space while occasionally sharing a thought, there's never any pressure in each other's presence.

Someone made the mistake of claiming the two of you shared a braincell once, and you've never let it go.

Your running joke is: "Sorry, can't talk right now, Fumi has the brain cell."

Fumikage picked up on it, and now his response when everyone looks at him funny is: "I won't be giving it back until you promise to stop using it for evil."

I really liked kidnapper price but could you do like kidnapper ghost kidnapping 141 because he’s afraid of losing anyone else in his life

// GHOST'S CHILDHOOD MENTION. i have to mention that i don't think simon would ever do this, especially due to his past, but it's a concept and idea. i don't believe he'd ever put someone in fear, especially his loved ones, and i don't think he'd use this as a coping mechanism at all. remember, concept ≠ my portrayal of the character!

he'd be so cautious and fed up of johnny's whining, eventually gagging him despite protesting through angry tears :( the betrayal johnny feels is immense; grinding his teeth together whilst he cries and shakes, furrowing his eyebrows at the man he saw as a friend. gaz is in a state of shock - blocking out reality and keep quiet unless asked, his humourous jokes now gone and replaced with a deep frown that seems to be stained on his face.

price is almost in denial, he's furious as well. he's the one to curse out simon, making him slightly afraid to gag him due to the threats he brought up. simon told john all about his childhood and trauma, only to be locked away because of the impact, afraid of being all alone. he didn't expect simon to use the 141 as a form of comfort, too scared to lose anymore people he loves, tearing up whem price insults him.

when it comes to price, he seeks out validation, he doesn't see exactly what's wrong, despite the law telling him otherwise. he goes for what his heart desires and not what his brain tells him, leading to harsh words john throws in his face. and you can't comprehend what is happening, you're not familiar with the feeling of being bound and chained, struggling to realise whether he's a spy, or not :(

he refuses to cry around you four, hiding upstairs and attempting to soothe himself through coping mechanisms. but, he always ends up smoking his life away. cigarette after cigarette after cigarette... constant 'til he finally puts the lighter down and heads downstairs stinking of tobacco and smoke.

kidnapper!simon is cruel as he takes no degradation, or bothers listening to your pleads. instead, gagging, blinding and chaining up to get rid of the constant annoyance of johnny's and gaz's desperate pleads for freedom.

i have a bit of a long answer to this, so i hope you don’t mind me replying as a post, just in case anyone else is curious

the tl;dr is: i'm planning to write a fic for this AU, but i'm happy to read your fic as well with proper credit

first thing is: i’m overjoyed by the positive response to this little AU! it’s definitely been occupying my mind as i’ve been studying (Eclipse is notably the most distracting) so i’m glad there’s an interest in such a simple premise—i was honestly hesitant to call it an AU at first by how simple an idea it is

that being said, i’ve been hinting at it a bit in some of my tags, but i am planning to write a fic for this AU it’s still in the planning and drabble stage, but there is definitely a story that i’m hoping to share. unfortunately, i am currently attempting to speedrun a 2 year program, so my time is short—and my leisure time is split between my other competing ideas and inhaling other people’s creative works to revive me after my daily readings

i will say that the AU has evolved quite a bit since my initial drawings—new designs, more background info, and a healthy dose of lore and trauma for the entire main cast—so there’s a lot i’m excited to share with you all

THAT BEING SAID, i am always eager to encourage other people’s creativity and i am so honoured that my little doodles can inspire people to be creative. so i would absolutely love to see your fic, i just ask that you:

it’s a slice of life story about how we respond to change, dusting ourselves off and moving forward, while carrying the baggage and fragile trinkets that define us

it will definitely be more than 5 chapters long. i don’t have an estimate on how long the fic will be. it's nothing too grand but i do know it will need quite a bit of time in order to properly explore all 3 of the boys and Y/N

there will be a Y/N, and Y/N has some lore, but other than some key backstory and key areas of development, i try to keep them gender neutral and as ambiguous as possible

i’ll be sharing the updated designs and some drabbles here when i have time—as soon as i can! (a little sneak peak is actually scheduled to post sometime today!)

i’ll also admit that this is my first time planning to write such a big fic and the first time i’m considering sharing it with other fans! my writing muse is very shy, so please be patient with me

How would Nancy handle Robin's autism?

I think, while they’re both autistic, they are very different, and Nancy takes a while to get used to that difference. Like I said in the previous one, she at first thinks Robin would want someone with her during a meltdown, but that doesn’t go so well.

I think more than anything she just needs time to learn all of Robins different quirks and habits and sensory issues. She doesn’t eat anything Robin would hate the smell of around her, she doesn’t take her to crowded places and makes sure Robin has space when she needs it. I also think because Nancy is quite scared of rejection Robin saying “I need to be alone” scares her at first, but eventually she gets used to it and knows it’s never personal.

In terms of communication, while Robin does ramble about a lot of seemingly random things, Nancy learns it’s not random. There always seems to be like an unspoken deeper thought behind a seemingly stupid question, and Nancy being the natural detective she is, loves to dig deeper and find out what Robin is really thinking behind all that rambling. Robin also uses humour as a coping mechanism and Nancy cannot detect sarcasm for the life of her, so that’s a bit of a challenge. But they do understand each other and Nancy learns how Robin communicates.

Also there is a whole lot of info dumping when it comes to Robin. Nancy is fascinated by all of that. Robin absolutely comes home from the library one day having learnt about a whole new thing and Nancy will always listen to it. I think Robin has also gotten Nancy completely fixated on something, even more so than Robin ever was.

I said Nancy was scared of rejection, but Robin is, too. And Nancy has a habit of pushing people away when she’s feeling bad about herself, or traumatic memories are resurfacing. It scares Robin when Nancy starts doing that, but she knows there’s always a deeper reason behind it, and at the end of the day they’re for sure healing each other.

She was taught ballet and still dances to try and cope, bringing more artistic liberty to the traditional ballet she was taught.

She still fights to survive. Both against the room and herself, but Ghost now helps her once he first found her attempting to end herself.

The scans have been out a few days now so I’m posting this. We just got Hiori’s backstory so let me expel more Hiorin headcanons onto you good people (seriously why are we so delusional abt this ship???) — obviously massive spoiler warning as of chapter 206 of the manga.

Also a cw for child abuse — these hcs pretty much all deal with their trauma:

Hiori and Rin have had a very long, very depressing trauma dump conversation about their families.

Rin has decided to add Hiori’s parents to the ‘I’ll fucking kill them’ list inside his head… which he totally has for no reason in particular…

Hiori likewise understands Rin’s resentment towards Sae deeply and doesn’t blame him at all for feeling so angry and upset.

The fact that the family members they hate are all telling them they aren’t good enough as they are (Sae explicitly, Hiori’s parents implicitly) ends up becoming a means of mutual understanding between them, allowing Hiori to feel a bit safer around Rin and Rin to not hate Hiori like he does the rest of Blue Lock.

Rin has tried to subtly allude to the idea that Hiori can move in with him at any time to get away from his family. Hiori has only half picked up on the signals though because a) Rin is shit at communicating anything nice, and b) Rin’s almost year younger than Hiori so it doesn’t actually make much sense to do that but it’s the thought that counts.

A lot of their conversations take place in the monitor room, in the dark, where they feel safest being vulnerable with each other (aka: see my fic on AO3).

Hiori has used dry, dark humour as a coping mechanism in front of Rin before and Rin has started doing it too occasionally.

So many “lol I hate my family, I hope they die, jk… unless?” jokes.

They end up having a mutual understanding for one another and can almost subconsciously pick up on when something reminds the other of their trauma.

For some more domestic, outside/no Blue Lock hcs (there’s a ton of food-related ones here idk why):

When they make dinner, Rin is sure to mix a healthy, balanced meal with convenience store foods coz Hiori hates eating a very strict diet. It reminds Hiori of the way his parents used to control everything about his life down to what he ate. Sometimes, Rin even makes a separate meal for himself because he wants to calorie count and know exactly what he’s eating, but Hiori’s had a bad day and really needs some instant ramen and pudding.

Hiori doesn’t have a big sweet tooth though, as a result of his parents’ conditioning. He didn’t grow up accustomed to sweet things so he finds anything too sugary difficult to eat (this comes from the egoist Bible where his least favourite food is cotton candy because of the sugar content). His love of salty food however is through the roof and Rin has to remind him to check the sodium contents on the meals he chooses at the convenience store.

Rin has stopped insulting or talking badly about Isagi around Hiori, purely because Hiori feels safe around Isagi. It’s a challenge, and mostly they try to keep Isagi out of their conversations altogether, but if he does come up Rin attempts to be neutral.

Sometimes, Hiori holes himself up in his computer room playing shooters. When that happens, Rin knows to leave him alone until he’s out of his slump, because it’s usually a sign that Hiori is remembering some bad memories. They both like their own space anyway, so it isn’t as if much changes in their routines.

While Hiori’s in a slump, Rin restocks their fridge with energy drinks and instant meals so Hiori can dip in and out to get food when he wants it. He eats alone unless Hiori texts him saying he’ll be out to get food.

Rin also doesn’t bring up anything to Hiori once Hiori re-emerges from his room, letting Hiori come to him if he wants to talk about it. Hiori knows Rin struggles with dealing with trauma, so he usually leaves it.

Once when Rin was having a particularly stressful time, Hiori bought him a whole box of his favourite ice creams (the ones he used to get on the way home from practice) and they had a competition to see who could get the most “winner” sticks. Rin won.

Hiori has also attempted to learn how to cook so he can make Rin food when Rin isn’t feeling up to cooking. Rin says he’ll just order takeout but Hiori insists on trying some of his recipes. How successful he is varies on how easy it is to throw the ingredients in a pan and let them simmer.

When sleeping together, they usually stick to their own sides of the bed but sometimes when Hiori is feeling upset he reaches out to Rin as a comfort. Rin isn’t the best at providing said comfort, but he lets Hiori into his arms in those moments.

On the flip-side, if Rin has been feeling angry or frustrated because of Sae, Hiori will slowly snake his arms around Rin’s torso and hug him close, becoming the big spoon despite being smaller. Rin places his hand over Hiori’s as a reassurance that he feels reassured doing this.

Sometimes, but not always, this nighttime cuddling leads to talking about their pasts. Rin always holds Hiori very close and says that Hiori was never in the wrong and never deserved to go through anything that happened as a result of his parents’ expectations (usually with a lot of colourful language). Hiori likewise will do the same for Rin whenever Sae gets brought up, although he’s less vulgar. His words are somehow even more scathing though.

They both find it easier to open up in the dark. It feels like a safety blanket that can hide their vulnerability, especially for Rin.

Zel tends to change the way that he acts depending on who he's talking with. He has a multitude of identity issues and finds that since nothing matters, neither does the person that he truly is. He's lost himself.

Zel is unlabeled and single, without much desire to find a partner.

Zel will generally either not react or laugh when aggression is directed towards him. He is usually more happy than he is hopeless, so he will most likely joke around and make humour of serious topics. He prefers to laugh rather than cry, yet, he is constantly aware of the fact that his own existence has no meaning and that is able to bring his mood down if he ends up expanding on his thought process.

Zel has no surviving family… or at least, that is what he says.

Zel is incredibly out of touch with his own emotions, despite feeling them vividly and deeply. He prefers to ignore them after he has to “go through the motions of experiencing them”, but this is actually just a poor coping mechanism. He only knows sadness or joy, and anything that isn’t one of those two things is usually pushed away into the back of his mind.

Zel enjoys pissing other people off and playing pranks on them, singing about the idea of death with a cheery tone. He loves nothing more than talking to people and making them question themselves. He is not necessarily malicious, but what he says can end up being incredibly mean as he has a rather pessimistic outlook on life.

theyre blonde :( thats it :( okay but ACTUALLY LETS GET INTO IT

They're loud assholes to people who need to be yelled at, but theyre actually hella introverted.

Mia "i think fast i talk fast" Dearden will mouth off at villains and batman, and take the piss out of people she loves. BUT she wasn't exactly shown to have like a friend group at her school (she was shown to be popular. but we only see her specifically interact with one person), and was extremely nervous to join the titans, not because they intimidated her, but because she didnt really...want to be there. She'd rather be with people she knows. She spends most of her time practicing archery, even before she was speedy. The only time we ever saw her go out anywhere was on a date with Dodger. And I will be pretending for the sake of this post that all of this is bc of character stuff and not just bad writing!

Similarly, Ollie "goateed loudmouth" Queen thrives when he's alone, he prefers it, he rarely spends time with people outside of his family or close close friends. He'll rant and rave at leaguers and cops and capitalists and villains all day long, but he's at his happiest and most content when he's alone, and often when on the move too, this man cannot sit still he is like a fucking shark he will die if he is in the same place too long but thats unrelated to this post.

As is pretty much a requirement to be in the arrowfam. Neither of them are here to fight the big alien threats you take on while being in the league/titans. They're here to save the little guy and fuck up capitalists. They have both seen the worst of society on the very opposite ends of the spectrum, Ollie with the rich, Mia with those the rich forget or ignore. I don't think I really need to add an example of Ollie here considering thats like his main this if u know anything about him. But look heres mia thinking abt it in her first titans issue.

Now with coping mechanisms they're a lil different, Mia tends to isolate and stay in one place. Ollie will isolate but fuck off somewhere. Accidentally walk to canada. That sorta thing.

They also both mask their emotions and deflect with humour when around other people, they don't want others to have to deal with their shit, they don't want to burden them (hence the isolation, this also often leads to them imploding in on themselves). Heres my most favourite example of their similarities ever (yes I will continue to post and talk about this specific thing every 3 weeks and no one can stop me) I do owe Hester my life for this

Now heres the best part. They both did this a lot right. And yknow what that led to? Learning and growing and being there for each other :] Now im going to be honest we dont really see this growth in vol 3 bc judd winick is incapable of writing character development but! Phil Hester is here for us once again with his story in the 80th special and this part specifically <3

Also once again a whole arrowfam thing- neither of them give two shits about their secret id lmao. I choose to believe Mia is so flippant about hers bc she so easily realised Ollie was GA that she just went like. Yeah sure I won't give a fuck either, it's clearly working for him.

okay. we've had your headcanons on kruegergolem.... but not on only golem so. what are your thoughts on our friend hans 'golem' blaustein :)c

FINALLY... FINALLY I HAVE AN EXCUSE TALK MORE ABT GOLEM... To celebrate here's him unrendered with his face bare (he's sososo cute). my thoughts are that I love him

So here are some Golem headcanons!! Writing him in fics made me love him ten times more. he's a very very interesting character imo.

Good guitar player and decent bass player. Both electric and acoustic!

Golem IS a metalhead. He has so many washed-out band t-shirts that he refuses to get rid of because he got them at gigs or concerts and they are nice souvenirs!!! (you can't even make out the band name anymore)

Resilient and cold-headed by nature, but has tendency to fall into unhealthy coping mechanisms (such as willingly overworking himself, drinking, smoking more)

Has a weed problem. There are times where he will smoke more (if he's stressed) or less (if he's very busy) but he cannot kick off the habit. he needs half a joint to sleep.

Dry sense of humour.

Literally the best leader figure you can dream of. He's smart and knows how to make people listen to him but he's also affable, caring - selfless, but reasonably, and a very very good mentor.

That also makes him a good father too bad he's in the military

Hans is a perfectionist with extremely high expectations but mostly for himself only. Comes from his education, the will not to disappoint, and the fact that he's the only one of his two brothers who pursued his family tradition of making a career in the special forces.

Jewish, though that bit is technically canon. usually does not celebrate christian holidays but he does for his daughter that he loves vvv much. by 2020/mw19, she's 5-6 in my hc...

Golem likes hunting trips. alone. they're akin to meditation for him. He hunts with a bow when he can, and always uses every part of the animal - cooking, crafting, etc. It's extremely important to him.

Lucifer

📚 Lucifer honestly wasn’t expecting it, he’s never really been faced with someone who uses dark humour the way that you did. 📚 He’s never used that type of humour in general so it took a little while for him to even realise that you were joking. 📚 Actually had to consult his brothers because he was worried for you but the more that you said things like that, the more he accepted your sense of humour. 📚 As soon as he realised that you used it as a coping mechanism he’d always find out whatever was bothering you and find a way to fix it.

You were sitting in Lucifer’s office, he was busy doing paper work until you mumbled something to yourself. “Hm?” He hummed as he looked up at you leaning over your homework “Is there a spell out there that can turn the vacant space between my ears into something useful?” You asked as you looked at him, if this had been a few months ago, he would have worried about what you said, instead he walked over to you and sat next to you. “What happened?” He asked as he looked over what you were trying to understand. “Magical potions class is just like chemistry and I was never good at that.” You answered. “There’s nothing going on up here on a normal day but my one brain cell is going into overdrive at this now.” “You know, you could just say that you don’t understand, you don’t have to put yourself down like that.” He sighed as he picked up the paper that you were looking at. “What are you talking about?” You asked leaning back in your chair and he rolled his eyes before pulling you closer and sitting you on his lap for him to explain everything that you didn’t understand.

Mammon

💳 Mammon understands exactly what you're doing the moment that you do it because he does the opposite, with the way that he talks about himself. 💳 He was careful about what he says about you, he knew that everything he said about you, you took to heart. 💳 In response to everything you said he would say something to compliment you and then blush profusely when you acknowledged it. 💳 Mammon likely doesn’t realise that it’s a coping mechanism and unknowingly fixes whatever problem that you come across.

You had actually bumped into each other, he was on his way to find you and you were on your way to your next lesson, you ended up literally crashing into each other and you laughed it off making a comment about people stepping all over you because you were a doormat. Mammon didn’t have enough time to set that straight before you rushed off to your next class but he didn’t forget what you had said.

That evening when you were sitting in your room working through work from the classes you attended that day, when Mammon came in and flung himself over your lap “Hello” You greeted him softly as he wrapped his arms around your middle “what are you doing there?” “Nothin’” He answered. “Is something wrong?” You asked. “No, I’m just catchin’ up on somethin’” He answered. “What are you talking about?” You asked pushing away your work to play with his hair. “You're more than a doormat.” Came his muffled reply as he buried his face in your stomach and even if you knew what you said was a joke you appreciated this affirmation so instead of saying anything you leaned down and pressed a kiss to the side of his head as he tightened his hold on you.

Leviathan

🐈 He does it himself so he knew exactly what you were doing but he was shocked that you did it and that you were somehow worse than he was. 🐈 You were both constantly scolding the other for making self-deprecating jokes and even ended up having an argument once. 🐈 You were sitting in his room, you were sitting with your legs over his lap, and you were scrolling through your devilgram. 🐈 Levi flung his hands down when he lost yet again and you jumped he apologised but you waved off saying something about finding a new talent as a punching bag.

“What did you just say?” Levi asked, putting down the controller and looking at you. “I said that I learned a new talent punching bag.” You muttered as you continued scrolling and honestly didn’t even realise what you had said. Levi reached out grabbing your phone and throwing it down next to you, he was now leaning over you. “I thought I told you not to say things like that!” He almost whined and you looked at them and rolled your eyes. “Have you stopped calling yourself a stinky otaku?” You asked, he dropped his head hiding his face and you smirked. “That’s different.” He mumbled as his tail wrapped around your waist to stop you from moving to sit up properly “How is that different?” You asked. “You implied that anyone could hit you and it’s be fine.” Levi frowned. “No one is allowed to hit you.” “Will you, my big strong avatar of Envy, save me?” You asked. “I protect you from everything, even yourself.” He mumbled. “Thank you.” You said softly, pressing a kiss to your lips.

Satan

As smart as he is he didn’t realise what you were doing until one of the other brothers pointed out to him. Once he realised what you were doing he literally stopped talking to you, angry that you’d think that way about yourself. He reads about your humour and how it’s commonly developed, he realised you were using it as a coping mechanism. Then he just tried to eliminate anything that would push you to that type of humour but of course he couldn’t protect you from everything.

Satan was studying while you were lying across his bed holding your phone up as you scrolled things on your phone, he glanced over at you for a second as you let your phone fall. “What happened?” He asked. “Hm?” You asked. “You just threw your phone down… What happened?” You asked. “Oh nothing.” You answered, he walked over picking up your phone. You don’t know how easily he opened the DDD and found the page where you had posted your most recent picture. There were a couple of succubi that were commenting some pretty distasteful things. “You know these demons?” He asked. “No, I think they’re in some classes with us.” You answered “doesn’t matter it’s not like their wrong-” “Stop.” He ordered. “I was only joking.” You smiled and he leaned down. “You know I don’t find it funny.” He mumbled putting your phone in his back pocket as he leaned down pressing a kiss to your lips. “Ignore them.” “I am.” You smirked and he narrowed his eyes. “No more jokes at your own expense.” He corrected himself and you roll your eyes. “I’ll do my best.” You mumbled.

Asmodeus

💅 Asmo knows what you're doing and hates what you're doing, he knew from the start and devised a plan to stop you. 💅 He knew that you were doing it to cope with the situation that you had been put in so sometimes he’d do normal things with you just to distract you. 💅 He hated when people laughed at the jokes that you told but he never said anything, just denied everything you said and complimented you instead. 💅 There was a time that he was having a really bad day and you made a joke about yourself that actually made him cry and you had to console him, you were at least careful after that.

You were sitting in front of his mirror as he carried out some skincare routine, you smiled at him as he booped your nose before turning you to the mirror, it was almost like he read your face and before you could say anything he pressed his lips to yours in a playful kiss. “Think before you talk.” He reminded you and you looked at him and smirked. “Are you asking me not to say-” He cut you off again with another kiss. “Or maybe you mean-” He kissed you again “are you going to let me speak?” “Are you going to say something nice?” He asked, the silence that followed made him lean forward and press another kiss to your lips “that’s what we’ll be working on.” “Huh?” You grunted as he easily lifted you, despite the way he looked he was able to carry you over to the bed easily. “Shopping, makeovers, self-care until you stop making those jokes.” He decided. “Well you know I’m not against that.” You sighed snuggling into him and he smiled down at you. “Good so you’ll be here every night right?” He asked. “If that’s what you want.” You mumbled. “That’s what I want.” He confirmed before allowing you to fall asleep.

Beelzebub

🍔 Beel was the only one, who heard it and understood it the first time that you ever did it. 🍔 He’s also figured out how to use it to find out what mood and how much something bothered you based on your tone of voice and body language. 🍔 He always tried to offer you food to distract you if things were really bad but more often than not he’d just listen to you. 🍔 He never liked the humour that you used but he would probably be the only one that doesn’t necessarily try to stop just enforcing how important you are to him.

Beel looked at you, he was worried, he knew that something was bothering you but not a single dark natured joke had passed your lips. He looked around trying to figure out what was going on himself but instead he just picked you up. “Beel what are you doing?” You asked. “You're not making jokes.” He mumbled “something is really bothering you.” “Is that so?” You asked. “I know you… You’ve been here long enough.” He answered. “So where are we going?” You asked. “Somewhere that you can talk.” He answered as you relaxed yourself, not even trying to figure out where you were going.

Beel took you back to the attic, he could see Belphie was asleep up there but that didn’t bother either of you. “Talk.” Beel ordered as he opened a snack, he offered you some which you took as you started going through everything that was bothering you, the more that you talked the more that the jokes seemed to flow through and before he knew it you were back to normal. “Thank you Beel.” You smiled. “Mmm, you're important to me, I have to make sure that you're okay.” Beel said softly. “Yeah, maybe I don’t need to be cerberus’ new chew toy.” You sighed and Beel just rolled his eyes.

Belphegor

💤 Belphie was shocked away from his drowsy state because of the comment that you made about yourself. 💤 For the most part he’d just smirk or roll his eyes while dragging you in to rest with him, once he was sure you were sleeping he’d sort out whatever the problem was. 💤 If someone else made a joke about you, he was quick to shut that down even if you were sure that he was asleep. 💤 Belphie would often keep you close because you were likely to agree with anything that anyone said about you so he’d be there to make sure you knew otherwise.

You lumbered your way into the attic groaning “what’s wrong with you?” Belphie asked, popping an eye open to make sure that you weren’t actually hurt. “I should have stayed dead when you killed me.” You mumbled. “Excuse me?” He asked sitting up and “Nothing it’s fine I just need a nap I’ll be fine.” You answered falling face flat on to the bed, Belphie just managed to move his feet out of the way so you didn’t hurt yourself. “Okay are you going to tell me what’s going on?” He asked moving your body with some difficulty considering you were doing nothing to help him. “Just some assignment that is going to take me forever and a retake for a test that I failed and I’m starting to wonder if life would be easier if I stayed dead.” You mumbled as he finally positioned your body over his as you buried your face in his neck. “It wouldn’t be life.” Belphie answered as he wrapped an arm around you “and I really like having you around.” “You like having me around?” You asked. “Are you sure?” “Positive.”

This is going to be a very long post of my opinion on Buddy Daddies last episode.

I am very satisfied with Buddy Daddies ending because I was worried how would Kazuki and Rei become a real family with Miri when they have the organization pointing their guns at their back.

The answer is: Before the organization manage to do something, we're going to charge in first.

I love that.

The action scenes on this episode is *chef's kiss* They're still able to banter while fighting ("Domestic violence", etc) which I think very chaotic and funny of them. This show trully has dark humour like what Uchiyama-san and Toyonaga-san said in the interview.

Buddy Daddies is mostly a comedic show but they can be a bit gory when they want, like how they executed Ogino's death. I cheered when Kazuki, the one who's always seen as the weaker one between the two, stabbed Ogino and then Rei pushed him so the knife would cut through his throat. Don't you think it's awesome how he was obsessed with people's last words but he couldn't say his or even write because Kazuki immediately burned the kitchen. Also, I noticed Kazuki probably used Rei's lighter, the one Rei gave him last episode!

Rei's confrontation with his dad is also well executed. I didn't think Rei would dare to shoot his dad, but he did! I also like how his dad warned him that even if Rei kills him, the organization still has his back and he could never escape his blood-ties with the Suwa family. His dad even let Rei kill him. But Rei had other solution, that was making his dominant hand permanently disabled, thus making him weaker. He still could shoot a gun with his left hand, it was shown multiple times that the could. He would also be able to fight only using his left arm, legs, and head (he likes headbump doesn't he). But having a permanently disabled right arm would hinder a lot of his job as a hitman because it would be harder to fight (ofc) and also handling bigger guns (sniper? Idk the name. Rei was usually seen being a shooter from afar using big guns).

A nice addition that I like is when Rei walked out, Shigeki pointed a gun at him but was never able to shoot. Maybe, just a little bit in his tiny and cold heart, he still acknowledges Rei as his son, someone who shares the same blood as him.

Honestly I was worried at first like how the hell are they going to solve Rei's problems with the organization in a single episode while still having to close the season with something heartwarming. But, I am satisfied with how they executed it in the last episode.

Also, Kazuki and Rei being the best dads dressing as santa even though they were both beaten up, badly injured, and could barely walk only to see their daughter singing is a cherry on top. Your highness, they're a family!

But I didn't expect such a huge timeskip. Miri looked so happy and healthy, good job daddies. She also looked a bit like her auntie Karin. I love how the family are still in contact with auntie Karin even though she's Kazuki's in-law and Kyu-chan. Miri also knows about her mother's passing, so at some point Kazuki and Rei told her. Misaki must be proud seeing how her daughter has grown into a beautiful and kind lady.

The comment about Kazuki drinking out with a girl was kinda unecessary though because ignoring the "no homo" meaning, Kazuki hooked up with girls back in the days just to run away from his guilt after his wife's death. It was sort of a coping mechanism? for him, like how he was also addicted to gambling. I thought after he finally starting to move on in episode 7, he would stop going out with girls like Carol and Dorothy (where are they though, I need them in the last episode).

Anyway, I love the ending! For an orgininal series with a limit of 12 episodes, they executed it pretty well.

Kazuki and Rei might not be romantically involved with each others at the end, but they're still partners, buddies, co-parents. I'm pretty sure they love each others platonically, I mean how can you spend 10 years (and more) of your time raising daughter together and opening up a diner in Okinawa if you don't love each others. They were also strictly platonic since episode 1 so as much I had wanted to see them together, it would've been a bit rushed if they squeezed the romance only in the final episode. And them having queerplatonic relationship is really good, I rarely seen that in an anime.

It's also refreshing to see that in this anime, a family with two dads and one daughter with no blood relation is seen and treated normally by the characters, and also for the viewers. I read in one of the interview with the staff/PD that they wanted to explore an unusual family dynamics consisting of two dads and one child, where in the heteronormative society a family usually consist of one father and one mother.

To be honest, I read a lot of BLs with family/kids trope but to make a family consisting of two dads acceptable in their universe, usually they had to make A/B/O setting where the omega is able to be pregnant with their child. If they went for modern days setting, they usually make one of the father had a child with their previous wife, be in a relationship with other guy, but his child is oblivious about their relationship and doesn't really think of his father's S/O as his other dad.

Kazuki and Rei raising a daughter together (who is not their biological child) probably make people see them as more than friends, but no one in the series see or treat them badly. Kyu-chan only reminded them about their jobs and how may affect Miri, Anna-chan only asked Miri if she were happy with having two dads, the daycare moms only interested in how attractive they are and what are their jobs because they're rich as hell, Misaki never questioned about her daughter being raised by two men but only worried when she found out they were hitmen, even Shigeki who wanted to kill Kazuki and Miri only said having connection with other people is bad for business.

In modern days Japan where same sex marriage isn't allowed, I like how two dads raising a daughter together is seen as normal in the eyes of its society. The viewers too, whatever their sexualities are (because I've seen a lot of straight men liking this series), also see their family as something normal and are all rooting for their happiness. I think it's very neat, like the show really is telling the viewers that, "Yeah, the family is not considered to be what we normally have. They are not related, the child is raised by two fathers who aren't romantically in love with each others. But they are a family. A family can be formed in more than one way."

This is my personal opinion, but I think making Kazuki and Rei strictly platonic until the end is not only to focus on the found family part, but they want to convey the message of "A family that isn't related by blood and doesn't consist of one father and one mother can also work" to people including them who are in a heteronormative society. Because me being raised in such society knows that even with a single hint of homosexuality on screen, a lot of people would be upset and stop watching. That's just my take though.

In conclusion, this is a good series which covers the realistic aspect of parenting added with some actions and dark background. Buddy Daddies is now added to another of my all-time favorite anime by P.A. Works, one of them is Nagi no Asukara. If they are going to make a second season (slim chance) or an OVA, I'll make sure to be tuning in.

that being said, i shall give the people what they want! so ray is the kind of annoying that i live and breathe for. the kind of annoying that makes me wanna open up his brain and dive inside. just pure unadulterated unhinged energy! zero shame or dignity present in that one. none whatsoever. but it's endearing y'know? i wanna tell him to shut the fuck up but i also want him to live in my pocket and give me a running commentary on my life?

i didn't wanna love him at first. it's gonna sound weird but it felt too predictable for me to go for yet another smartass idiot who can't for the life of him know when to shut the fuck up. so i kind of rebelled against myself and held out for a while. eventually though, he did wear me down and i did find myself shaking my head disapprovingly but smiling fondly alongside brad. i think though it was the deeper aspects of his character that finally drew me in, the ones that you have to look deeper into, in the shorter scenes that maybe don't seem that important but have subtler little details.

and if we do wanna get deep about it then i always enjoy a character who clings desperately onto humour and sheer absurdity as a coping mechanism. it's pretty clear that ray falls within that category and i did enjoy getting to see a little bit of how he reacts when he can't reach for that coping mechanism as easily, when he's too exhausted and fed up to pull the mask on.

another thing i noticed that made me appreciate him from just a really small action is in the episode where everyone is trying to cheer walt up. ray uses his method of being a comedic annoyance to give walt some kind of normalcy that he probably isn't getting from the others, who are trying to reassure him and look after him in a more direct and 'impactful' way. but ray decides to go and basically dry hump his head and say stupid shit and yeah, walt is a bit irritated bc of everything he's dealing with, but as a viewer, we get to see ray actively using the way the other marines see him to try and give walt a sense of "nothing is going to change, you're still you and i'm still me". whilst brad, nate and espera are there basically outwardly telling him not to worry (and walt needed that too, i love my dads <3), ray takes a much subtler approach in supporting him. which when you think about it, really is the opposite to how we talk about ray usually. he's anything but subtle generally, so i think this little bit of information and look into his character, and intentions, was something that just really stood out to me bc he chose that approach for walt, imo at least. i know it's a tiny tiny scene but it just helped confirm a lot of my thoughts about how ray approaches things and how, sure, he is naturally unhinged and doesn't think before he speaks a lot, but sometimes, you can actively see him using that humour and those jokes and all his ridiculous antics to pull his friends out of whatever dark crevice their mind has fallen into. he does it with brad as well. i feel like his actor portrayed those purposeful moments really well also, because for me, i could tell when he was just being ridiculous and himself and talking shit, and when he was playing it up to keep others focused on him and not the other shit going on around them. anyway. this is one of the reasons i love his character and his portrayal a lot. it's not lost on me that it actually is a back-and-forth with ray that eventually pulls walt out of his downward spiral either, at least surface-level. it was a team effort, but ray continuing to prode him eventually got him to 'snap out of it' and feel like he was being treated normally.

and as much as i loved his comedic scenes throughout the series, and all his songs and ways of keeping everyone entertained, i really enjoyed his portrayal and depiction in the last two or so episodes, where you start to notice the mask slipping. it's thrown back on pretty quickly, but i appreciated that we got that small insight into how everything has actually affected him and it actually felt different afterward. he goes back to being a smartass and being the annoying friend who never shuts up, but you can see he's changed somewhere deep down underneath as well.

and the fact that it's his final look toward trombley that kind of sums up the conclusion of the show and the true realisation about what they did there. i don't know if i can explain it coherently yet, i guess i'm still processing what i'm trying to say about that final scene. i'm sure it's been said a thousand times by someone, a lot more eloquently that i ever could, but his final look really spoke volumes to me. his reaction to trombley and the video and then finally walking away felt like a confirmation of the message that the show presents to us throughout the whole series, but which they let us pick up and spin around for a few episodes to fully absorb, before letting ray finish it up with a single look. idk, maybe i'm just rambling.

maybe this is completely different from what you were asking for anon, so i'm really sorry if it disappoints you, or you were just looking for silly commentary on all the unhinged shit that comes out of his mouth lmao but yeah. i am a little bit obsessed with ray person. i truly would like to examine his brain up close.

Tell me more about your OC, Thalia! How did you get the idea for her? What’s your fav part about her? Any thoughts about her as a character that ended up on the cutting room floor?

I love those questions! My OCs are my babies, I love talking about them!

I’m super used to writing OCs since that’s usually all I write (The Light of Stars is actually my first fanfic, believe it or not, but I’ve written original stories for literal decades).

Funnily enough, Thalia started with… the name. I knew from the start there would be a lot of references to Greek mythology. Too much to mention here, people who read the fic will know, but I had this idea about Psyche’s journey to the underworld I wanted to reference at some point, and I also wanted a reference to a muse. Thalia had the nicest ring to it while being somewhat referential. Sometimes it’s really as simple as that 😂 I pronounce her Tah-lee-ya btw (it’s a less common pronunciation of that spelling, but it exists. I just didn’t want to spell her Talia for obvious reasons, but she totally sounds like it. And now I’ve destroyed the sound at least half of my readers had in their heads 🙈).

Thalia is the muse of comedy, and I wanted some of that in her. She has this intelligent sense of humour that is both genuine but also a coping mechanism, and it made for an interesting dynamic with Morpheus, who is always so serious. Her humour is, albeit observational, warm. She’s not a cynic although she has every reason to be, and I guess he knows that because he knows her story and what she’s been through, and it probably makes him think. He finds her challenging, but there is also an honesty and emotional openness to her, especially about her own hurt/darkness, that he finds intriguing. And that honesty also extends to how she relates to him—she is someone who actually sees him in the truest sense of the word, and it’s something he both needs so desperately but also finds impossible to trust and fully give in to for a very long time, and for a lot of reasons.

I guess the idea was to find someone who is in many ways like him (only in terms of shared human experience) but has a completely different way of dealing with it. It is, although a love story, at its core an exploration of trauma, loss and grief, of second or even third chances at life (however you might define the latter), and I’d long wondered what would happen if he met someone who is NOT trying to change him. They have their problems and conflicts, yes, but ultimately, this is about a deep mutual understanding that hinges on acceptance. And that acceptance is possible because it was there from the start, for reasons that I won’t give away here, but they are deeply rooted in how she always related to who and what he is on a conceptual level. And now I’m writing the sequel, and it becomes even more important.

My favourite part about her must be how she has the ability to make him laugh? Like, little by little, from something that barely makes him cock an eyebrow to a tug on the corners of his mouth to little smiles that get more frequent. And that moment when he sees the painting and actually realises he *is* like that around her was weirdly emotional to write because it wasn’t planned.

Plus, that she gets him to the stage where his laughs are actually audible, and they’re *not* weird. Well, at least not *that* weird. And from a writer’s point of view, it felt like a really natural, gradual progression that just happened, so it wasn’t something I had plotted. They just did their thing, and I wrote it down 😂

The stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor was mostly related to the no mortals rule. I explored a lot of different angles but ultimately didn’t want her to be a goddess or witch or somehow overpowered to circumvent that, it just didn’t sit right with me. So I spent a lot of time on setting up different beats that might look like one thing or another, but without giving too much away: The whole story hinges on her humanity and mortality, and it was ultimately the only thing that made sense.

Thanks again for the ask. It was a really good opportunity to talk about character creation/development, because so often, people seem to believe that all OCs are straightforward self-inserts, and nothing could be farther from the truth (OC fics aren’t reader fics). It’s impossible for characters not to have little bits of us because they come out of our brains, but they aren’t mirror images. I sometimes give characters little bits I’m confident in writing authentically without having to do a lot of research. For Thalia, it was drawing/painting. I had other female OCs that rode a motorcycle or did a martial art I’ve been familiar with since my childhood, others again were professional performers. I find I can write these things without overwriting them because I know what they feel like. Because sometimes, people will research these things and write them like an instruction manual. And while the detail is correct, someone who really *does* these things would never describe them that way. But that’s often really as far as it goes. It pains me to say that I’m far more like Morpheus than like Thalia, but I didn’t need to self-insert for that to be the case 😂
