Okay in all seriousness. There's something that I REALLY want to talk about as an open discussion with the fandom, but. This is not going to be a very nice thing to hear/talk about.

It's about how Gonta is treated by the fandom.

As a fan of all the V3 characters now, and as someone who has always been a fan of Gonta, and as someone who has many mental disabilities and two diagnosed neurodivergancies... I'm tired of playing nice about it.

You all need to stop being ableist towards Gonta.

I've mentioned in the past that I don't like shitting on personal interpretations. I don't like saying something is or is not canon because narration is just a big web of text that you try to decipher with your own personal biases, experiences, and thoughts. That's why two literary analysts analyzing the same text with the same literary criticism rules can come to wildly different conclusions--why people develop different headcanons from the same canonical information.

But one of the things that challenged my integrity is just how many people view Gonta as this innocent, naive, ignorant, baby boy who can do no harm/never has a complicated/dirty/violent/sexual thought in his life ever.

This incredibly ableist interpretation of the character bothered me for, well, obvious reasons (See: It's fucking ableist, need I say more?) but I never challenged it as harshly as I am now because to be frank, it's not my place to tell people how to HC a character. It still isn't. But I've pretty much given up on my integrity on the subject and have decided to go all in on discussing why this interpretation of Gonta is just. Really bad.

First of all, not to promote my own analyses here or anything, but I think this analysis I did of Gonta explains a LOT in regards to the ableism the cast gives him in canon. I also think that this subtle ableism is why the fandom is so bad with Gonta's characterization in headcanons and fanfic--because they've seen how the cast treats him, and they think it's normal. They don't see the microaggressions, they don't see the subtle ableism in the cast--they just see this big giant idiot who speaks like Tarzan in the English version (which... I don't actually know why people assume Tarzan (Thinking of Disney's version) is stupid. Like as a boy he had to reinvent the spear with no one to guide him on how to do it. He was able to strategize and outsmart "civilized" men in the final showdown. Still I digress) and don't see the literal genius behind his social awkwardness.

There is also another very important point I'm going to make in addition to this, and it's going to be very uncomfortable to Gonta fans who insist he's nothing but a sweet baby who only has pure thoughts. Especially to the fans who insist he "can't be sexual" or think it's weird to ship him with his peers.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but... Gonta blatantly has sexual desire and gets horny right in canon.

This is further clarified here:

It wasn't a matter of Gonta didn't want to touch her because touching someone in their underwear was inappropriate, or being flustered because she was in her underwear which is inappropriate...

It was literally a "weird feeling" that made him unable to approach her or touch her. A "weird feeling" that Miu makes pretty obvious as to what it was--sexual arousal.

He literally was sexually attracted to and felt sexual arousal from looking at Miu in her underwear. He had sexual feelings and thoughts about Miu. Why?

Because Gonta is a young man.

Gonta is a brilliant, talented young man who has normal human thoughts for someone his age--sexual desires, upsetting thoughts, complicated thoughts, ectect. He is not a child, he is not mentally stunted (I've been informed that people have literally said this on Ao3 for the NSFW Gonta fics, please for the love of god stop that)

I think the reason why Gonta fans typically want to keep him as a "pure baby child who can do no wrong" is because treating him like the young adult that he is makes it harder for them to justify Chapter 4. Every time I've seen a Gonta fan that hates Kokichi, it's always followed by the sentiment of "Kokichi manipulated and abused Gonta into killing Miu, so it's all Kokichi's fault." They're afraid of nuance and liking a character with the grey morality of genuinely thinking Mercy Killing the cast is a viable option, because it challenges their own morals about the character they adore.

To those people who read this and are upset: You can and should like Gonta! Gonta is a magnificent character who showcases the subtle way microaggressions can manifest and hurt people, he's a good-hearted person and a literal genius, he cares deeply for his friends and loves everyone with upmost sincerity.

But.

You need to re-evaluate your stance on Gonta if you think he's a stupid, naive fool who Kokichi manipulated. You need to re-evaluate why you think those thoughts, why you think Gonta being shipped with anyone is "Kinda weird" or "has weird consent problems" or "give you the ick." You have to challenge yourself and ask yourself uncomfortable questions in regards to why you treat Gonta like a child when canon has proven otherwise, why you think he cannot have violent or sexual thoughts, why he can't think mercy killing his class is the only way to save them.

This isn't an attack on you--but understand that these specific takes on Gonta? They are ableist in nature. They belittle and dismiss him, they treat him like a child, an idiot who can't think for himself--and you have to come to terms with the fact that Gonta is a far more complex character with complicated thoughts and feelings who is a young adult. Not a child. A young adult.

So again, ask yourself this: Why are you treating this young adult like he's a toddler?

Why I DON'T think Dalinar will be homophobic

[Stormlight spoilers if you don't know who in Stormlight is canonically gay! Both in book and per WOB]

Now...it's possible that the many posts I see floating around predicting that Dalinar will be homophobic when Renarin comes out are, like, jokes. In which case, I look the fool to take them seriously and argue the other side. But oh well. Here's why I genuinely do not think Dalinar will be anything but supportive of his gay son.

1. Gay marriage is legal in Alethkar

No, wait, don't get mad! I'm gay married in real life, and trust me, I know that the existence of gay marriage does not mean homophobia is over. But I do think that the point of the scene with Drehy being married to a man was to suggest that gay Alethi men can be openly gay. They aren't expected to hide it and it isn't assumed to be shameful. It must be less common, since Kaladin did his whole "You know how it is to be different, being married to a man" speech, but it's not presented as something shameful or illegal and the other bridgemen react as though Kaladin is the weird one for bringing it up like that.

2. WOB is that Vorinism supports gay marriage

Sanderson has said, "Vorin culture is concerned with oaths. Extra-marital sexuality is strictly forbidden, but homosexuality is regarded the same by most as heterosexual relationships. If the proper oaths are spoken, then the Almighty approves."

So to me, that means that Brandon wants Vorin society to be heteronormative but not homophobic. We can argue about whether he's successful (Kaladin's speech is still weird), but I don't think he'll have his specialist boy Dalinar be homophobic if society at large isn't. If anything, Dalinar is gonna say something like "Well okay but no mateform before marriage, right?"

3. Dalinar reads now

Also, Dalinar is honestly doing a lot to break down some of the heteronormative barriers himself. He reads and writes now, something so out of the ordinary that there didn't even exist a first-person male "I" form--Navani has to lowkey invent one for him. So Dalinar is pretty okay with nonstandard expressions of masculinity.

4. Dalinar lets Rlain carry a spear

I bring this up on the assumption that Renarin's first boyfriend will be Rlain--in which case, there is the disturbing possibility that Dalinar would oppose the relationship not because he's homophobic of course but just because it's a human-singer relationship. Which would be hard to pull off, I feel, without it feeling like metaphorical homophobia. But the good news is, I think Dalinar is meant to also to be growing steadily more accepting of singers. I mean, even way back when, he allowed it when Kaladin asked that Rlain be allowed to carry a spear.

5. Dalinar joins the scholars so that Renarin will feel more comfortable

But to me, the number one piece of evidence that Dalinar will support his son is that he's already doing that. When Renarin wanted to hang out with the scholars in Urithiru, an act that could be seen as unmanly, Dalinar came to the scholar meeting too, just to demonstrate that it was perfectly manly and also something that Dalinar himself supported. Therefore, if Renarin does announce his relationship with Rlain and seems to be getting any grief at all, I feel like Dalinar's only response would be to ask Navani later, late at night... "Navani...should I get a boyfriend too?"

Because that's what a supportive dad does.

You couldn't make sense of it, you didn't understand why he was smiling like that. The pictures appeared to have been taken in the morning, so why hadn't he called you and told you about Samantha? After thinking about it for a few minutes, you decided to talk to him and see if he'd tell you about what had happened.

When you called Daemon, he picked up right away, sounding exhausted but well "Hey babe"

You composed yourself as you heard his voice. He didn't sound stressed or terrified, normally he seemed a bit vulnerable whenever he'd come across her.

"Hi…what are you doing I just got back from work" you rubbed your forehead with your fingers, you didn't want to accuse him of anything, pictures can be deceiving you understood that well but why wasn't he telling you about her? Why was he hiding this?

"I was out with Viserys for an event darling, I'm back at the hotel now, going out for dinner with the team" he said

"Ohhh okay ummm..how was your day?" he chuckled as you asked him a generic question.

"Alright love, how was yours?" He raised his brows as he asked,

"Goodd..well.. actually ..ummm when were you going to tell me about Samantha? That you bumped into her this morning?" You finally asked him, unable to hold your anxiety for any longer and there was a complete silence on his side for a moment before he finally spoke, you could tell just by the tone of his voice that he was upset.

"How..how do you know that?" He asked, you could also picture the typical scowl on his face.

"Why does it matter?" Shouldn't have said that.

"It matters to me..are you spying on me or something?" Your mouth opened in shock as he said that.

"Daemon –"

"Don't try and patronize me now.. I do not appreciate you keeping an eye on my every move.. I have had enough of that alright?"

Your eyes welled up as his pitch got higher.

"I am not keeping an eye on you ..I just asked you a question..I'm not lying am i?" you tried to defend yourself but you could sense he was already deep in his head now to reason with you. A conversation like this wasn't meant for a phone call, especially not with him.

"A question regarding something you shouldn't have known unless you were spying on me like that bitch used to..who told you huh? Did you talk to my brother?" He said all that in one breath, making you scoff in response.

"Daemon you're being unreasonable" he snickered at your response. This was going as bad as you had assumed but it was about to get worse.

"Yeah I'm being unreasonable..it's always me isn't it?"

The tears started to stream down your face as you hung up the phone once he had raised his voice. You knew that even if you called him back and tried to talk, the conversation would devolve into another argument, one of you needed to stay calm for this but you didn't have the energy for that right now. Instead, you turned off your phone, hoping to give yourself some time to process what had happened and to calm down before reaching out again.

As your phone turned off, Daemon threw his own in anger, shattering it against the wall. He cursed under his breath, feeling a storm of emotions coursing through him. Why did he have such a short temper? Why did he immediately jump to conclusions like that? You didn't deserve to be treated like that, especially not by him but then you jumped to conclusions as well.

As he joined Viserys and the rest of his team, he glared at him as well, his anger spilling over. His frustration was palpable,

"I need a new phone" he said to his older brother and received an exasperated sigh in response. Viserys called Daemon's assistant and asked him to buy a new phone for him asap.

"Why did you tell y/n that I met Samantha this morning?" Daemon crossed his arms as if he was stating a fact instead of an accusation.

"What are you talking about? The last time I saw her and had a conversation was when she was with you"

Daemon gulped at the response, if Viserys didn't tell you about the incident then who did?

"Besides you should have told her yourself" Viserys said to him, making Daemon realise that he had fucked up again, as soon as he got back to his room late at night, he took out the sim card from his broken phone and inserted it in the new one.

His legs were shaking constantly so he took out a cigarette and lit it up as he waited for you to pick up the call, he didn't want you to miss the flight two days later just because you were upset with him. He really wanted to see you and have you by his side.

"Heyy" you mumbled as you picked up the call and his words died in his throat, for a moment he didn't know what to say or how to fix this.

"Ummm how did you know darling? I just want to know..I'm sorry i snapped at you..you didn't deserve that but I just…I don't want to be trailed" his fingers brushed through his hair in frustration.

"You really think I'd do that to you? Do you really think so low of me Daemon?" He was speechless for a moment, he had allowed his past to ruin it again and he had hurt you with his words. All over again.

"No you won't, I'm sorry I made that assumption" you breathed in heavily as he said that.

"So are you going to tell me what happened this morning because I'm making a few assumptions myself, I don't want to think of you like that" you asked him in a straightforward manner and then he was silent again. His anger turned on and off like a switch.

"What do you mean?"

You put the phone down as he said that, clicked the pictures of the pictures you had received and sent it to him and you only sent the ones where he was smiling at her, another mistake, because it clearly came across as accusatory.

"I received them in the mail this evening..that's how I knew..maybe she sent them to me..infact I'm sure she did it..I'm not the one trailing you here daemon " his eyes teared up as you said that, he should have told you especially when he knew what Samantha was capable of doing, of course it was a trap, she never did anything that wasn't meant for hurting him. He should have known better, he was going to apologize but then you said something that made him snap again.

"Do you still have feelings for her Daemon..maybe there's a part of you that-" he cut you before you could finish your sentence. Both of you were just not in sync in this situation.

"Shut up y/n..how dare you say that to me now after everything i have told you about her?"

"I'm just confused and you are not helping "

"You know what I don't want to talk about this right now" he stood up, the urge to throw this phone was strong but he controlled himself.

"You don't want to talk about this?"

"I don't..I'm not going to justify anything, if you believe that I'm still obsessed with the woman that destroyed me than be it"

"Daemon.."

"Noo y/n ..just no..I shouldn't have called" he hung up after that. Didn't even listen to you, maybe you should have allowed him to speak before telling him that you thought he was still obsessed with his ex.

"Gods"

After minutes passed, you felt a heavy weight settle in your chest. You realized just how much your words must have hurt him. You had asked him if he was still besotted with his abuser, a question that must have felt like a slap in the face. But you had been so wrapped up in your own feelings that you hadn't stopped to consider his.

You suddenly felt terrible for asking him such a thing. Daemon had bared his soul to you countless times, and you had always been there to support him. He had trusted you with the most vulnerable parts of himself, and you had thrown it back in his face now. You couldn't help but think that you had betrayed the sanctity of that trust. You were supposed to be his angel.

You waited for his call but he didn't call again, you waited a whole day before you decided to call him yourself, you hated how anxious you felt about this, you didn't want a stupid misunderstanding to ruin your relationship with him but you had no idea what you were supposed to do if he wasn't even going to talk to you .

He did pick up your call but he was very standoffish, he told you that he was out and very busy, he asked you if you were okay and safe before he finally hung up.

For the next two days you both just texted ..you had to take the flight he had booked for the next day but you weren't even sure if he still wanted you there or not so the night before you called him again,

"Heyyy" you mumbled softly as he didn't say anything once he had picked up.

"Did you pack?" He asked you and your eyes teared up,

"Do you still want me to come?"

"Ofcourse I do, do you not to come?" His heartbeat sped as you questioned him.

"I do…I just.." your voice choked on your tears, you couldn't get the words out because you felt overwhelmed.

"Just come tomorrow, we will talk okay?" he said in a soft calm voice so you hummed in response.

He didn't say much after that and you spent the night twisting and turning on your bed only to take an early flight to Vegas.

What if he takes a step back again? What if he doesn't want to be with you anymore?

With all the troubling thoughts you reached his hotel and made your way to his room. As you knocked, he opened the door and stepped aside for you, wearing nothing but a robe. You were just looking around and didn't even have time to react before he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug. You felt yourself being pulled closer as he began to lay soft kisses on the side of your neck. You hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to react. You wanted to reciprocate the gesture, but you were still reeling from your earlier exchange.

He finally put his head up to look at you, your eyes were moist and so were his so he cupped your cheeks and rubbed his thumb over your skin in a gentle manner.

"I was on my run when I met her, I wanted to turn around and leave but I felt as if I wasn't able to move at all. You were right, she does affect me still..but not in the ways you fear–" Daemon spoke slowly, as if trying to pick his words carefully. You could sense the conflict within him, the struggle to tell you what happened without causing you further pain.

"I didn't mean that Dae ..I'm -"

"Shhhh let me speak" he pressed his thumb on your lips before you could apologize.

"Everytime I see her I see everything she has done to me. She then walked closer to me and embraced me tightly. I didn't stop her either and then she cried, she cried so much, she wailed as she told me that she missed me..that her life felt pointless without me. As she said that, I thought of my time with her, and I remembered that I used to feel the same way when I was with her, my life felt meaningless with her. When she pulled away I looked at her, finally i really looked at her and for once I felt above her. I saw how shallow and vacuous she was, without any depth or soul of her own and then i remembered how happy I was in that moment because I thought of you, us, our life together.. and that thought made me smile..that's all it was darling, you were the reason why I smiled. You made me smile even when you were not there with me"

As he finished speaking you couldn't hold back your emotions any longer. Tears dripped down your cheeks but his thumbs wiped them away, he leaned down to kiss you lovingly before he pulled away.

"You have been ignoring me for two days" The words were small and weak, barely above a whisper. Your voice cracked as you spoke to him.

"I have been trying to avoid the confrontation, to protect you from my anger, i didn't want to talk to you about all of this on the phone" he said to you but he knew his actions or lack of emotions had once again hurt you deeply.

"That hurt me..that feeling that you won't talk to me when you're upset.. that hurt me alot dae.. I have.. i have insecurities too..I get hurt too"

Tears rolled down his cheeks and he immediately got down on his knees to wrap his arms around your waist.

"I'm sorry I'm sorry.. I don't deserve you darling..I never did but please forgive me..one more time please?"

This is exactly how he used to beg her for forgiveness, the difference was that he pleaded with her so she wouldn't cause him any further pain. With you however, he was pleading not because he wanted to avoid punishment but because he didn't want to hurt you more.

You got down to his level and your arms wrapped around his neck as you hugged him tightly, you were still upset with him but you really needed to hold him, not just to comfort him but to be comforted by him as well.

"Don't ever do this to me again..if you're upset then fight with me ..but you can't ignore me like that ..you just can't," broken whispers filled his ear so he pulled away and placed his forehead down on yours.

"I don't enjoy raising my voice at you or saying words that prick at the edges of your heart"

"I know you don't..I don't either..but i have realized that I'd rather fight with you and make up then have you pretend as if I don't mean anything to you and that you can go for days without hearing my voice" you cried again and he couldn't stop his tears either.

"I can't ..I can't go days without hearing from you..i was only trying to protect you but I see now how foolish that was" he said softly as he kissed your forehead.

"I'm not a little girl Daemon, I can take your anger but I can't take your silence"

"Okay okay I'm sorry I will never do that again i promise..i promise" he whispered in your ear as he immediately picked you up and laid you down on the bed, his mouth latched to yours in utmost desperation..he wasn't perfect and he didn't think he'd ever be perfect enough for you but he has been trying and knowing that you were willing to stay by his side even after he had fucked up plenty of times was enough to make him want to change for better.

You deserved the man he used to be before she destroyed him, you didn't deserve the broken shell she had left behind.

"I don't see you as a little girl in dire need of my protection but I'm going to protect you anyway love..I'd never do anything to betray you" he said as he placed soft kisses all over your face.

"I didn't mean to accuse you of anything baby"

"I know…shhh I know it's okay..pretty angel it's okay" he cooed in your ears "Missed you love, I don't want you to leave" you tilted your head as you caressed his scalp with your fingers.

"I have to though..I'm sorry..i have missed you too baby"

"Mmmm Nooo stay..after the fight tomorrow..don't leave, stay with me..we will leave together after the finals"

"Daemon–"

"I'll find a job for you..If you want to work at the diner then I'll convince your boss ..heck I'll buy that fucking diner for you..I'll do whatever it takes..just stay with me please" he whispered between the small kisses so you cupped his cheeks and kissed him as lovingly as you could. His words brought a smile to your face.

"Okay..you don't have to buy the diner.. I'll stay" the smile on his face widened as you said that. There's nothing more he wanted in that moment than to have you stay with him.

"Besides i have to make it up to you"

"You do..I told you I'd make you grovel" you said sheepishly.

"Mmm make me grovel sweet girl I deserve that"

You smiled as he said that and cupped his cheeks to kiss him. You finally felt at peace, your heart no longer pounding in anxiousness and worry of the future of your relationship with him.

He had to attend a meet and greet event for the UFC so he left you by yourself in the hotel. You were in the balcony just enjoying the view when you noticed a woman down there near the pool who seemed oddly familiar to you.

You huffed and immediately went downstairs to confront her, she had sent that envelope to cause problems between you and Daemon and well you hated to admit it to yourself that it had worked in a way.

"You know i have never seen someone so shameless as you, it's like you have no integrity" you crossed your arms as you faced her, she had a binocular in her hands and you really wanted to grab it and bash her head with it.

"Did you get the pictures sweetie?" She asked you, a nasty smile curved her lips..

"Yeah and whatever you were trying to achieve didn't work ..you know he has moved on right? After what you had done to him you should have been rotting in a jail or worse be dead" the smile on her face faded as you said that. You despised her and you weren't afraid to tell her that.

"I had him first and he will always belong to me, I'd never leave him and if he can't be mine then I promise you ..I'll ruin him forever" she smiled again once she finished his words before she walked past you to leave, Daemon was right, it was as if she had no soul. Her empty threats didn't bother you though.

You just had to find a way to get rid of her once and for all.

As you made your way back to the room he was already there,

"Where were you sweetheart?" He asked as he approached you, you looked around the room and it was filled with several bouquets consisting of your favorite flowers.

"A stroll, you left me alone here" you didn't want to talk about Samantha especially after that emotionally heavy conversation you both had today because of her.

"That's rude of me to leave such a pretty lady all alone and cold in the bed isn't it??" He picked you up and you squealed as he threw you down on the bed.

"You can't… fight tomorrow " you reminded him so he groaned and squeezed his eyes.

"Is this how you're going to make me grovel?"

"Maybeee"

"Evil"

He kissed you sweetly before he laid next to you,

"Thanks for the flowers, I love them" he smiled as you said that.

"I have something else too"

"Let me guess..Another piece of jewelry?" He frowned in a playful manner at the comment.

"Am I so predictable in my gestures?"

"Yeah but I like that"

"Well I might just surprise you then…close your eyes"

"Fineee" you chuckled as you closed your eyes, he grabbed your arm and made you sit up, you heard his footsteps reaching for the closet and then he was back,

"Okay..open" you opened your eyes as he placed a sizable box on your lap. Looking at him sheepishly you unwrapped the gift. You gasped as you saw that it was a set of chef knives but they weren't some run of the mill knives you used in your kitchen, the handles were made from Ziricote woods and they were very expensive, again something you never would have bought for yourself.

"Daemon…" you smiled as you pulled one of them out and admired the handiwork and finishing.

"You like it?"

"It's beautiful" you felt awestruck in a way, you loved your job and to know that he wanted to give you something you'd use and cherish had warmed his heart. It was one of the most thoughtful presents you could have ever received.

"She is," he mumbled, his eyes never leaving your features as he adored how happy you looked by a set of knives. He wanted to spoil you with diamonds but they never brought such a smile on your face.

"Thank you really" you kissed him as tenderly as could. You knew he didn't like knives, you had noticed his discomfort whenever he was in the kitchen with you, they reminded him of times when she used to harm him with it all night long so him gifting this to you because you loved a good sharp knife was a big deal for you.

And Maybe you could use the knife to stab Samantha as well, win for all.

At night he took you out for dinner and you met Viserys, when Daemon was distracted he told you that there was something he wanted to discuss with you but you weren't supposed to involve Daemon in the matter, you had no idea how to feel about that, you didn't want to keep secrets from him but you had a feeling that whatever Viserys wanted to tell you was important and had to do something with Daemon. And Viserys would never say or do anything that would hurt his little brother.

Daemon was loved by one man the most and that was his older brother, Viserys had practically raised him like a father because their father had passed away when he was just seven.

Samantha wanted Daemon back in her clutches and she'd do anything to bring him back in her life, she was willing to ruin his career all over again. Turns out her threats weren't empty but you knew to protect Daemon and his dreams you'd have to step up instead of cowering down and giving her what she wanted. You'd never allow the love of your life to fall into her trap again, you couldn't imagine him being hurt again, especially now when he was learning to move on and heal from her abuse.

You were going to protect him and for that you were willing to do whatever it takes.

Azriel wanting to protect Elain and seeing her as someone who needs protecting are two different things. Nesta didn't want Elain to scry because of what happened the last time. Azriel said "There is an innate darkness to the Dread Trove that Elain should not be exposed to.” He doesn't say that she isn't capable to search for them or find them, he is afraid of their darkness coming to contact with her. Azriel also didn't had any issue when Mor fought in the wars and never made it an issue.

Azriel and Elain have a completely different dynamic than Azriel and Mor. First with Mor it was one sided, while with Elain it is mutual. He needs to stay away because they are struggling to keep their relationship platonic.

Gwyn when she first saw Azriel was distracted and wary of him. And Azriel wasn't able to look her in the eyes without seeing her as the victim. "For a heartbeat, their gazes met. He blocked out the bloody memory that fashed"

SJM made a great job at showing Gwyn's healing by having Gwyn being able to joke with him and challenge him and having Azriel looking at her with admiration and replacing that image with Valkyrie Gwyn. Azriel not being able to do anything to save Nesta, Emery and Gwyn from the rite and reminding Cassian that they trained them well enough to survive isn't specific to Gwyn.

So I don't see how you can compare Azriel wanting to protect the women he has feelings for vs the admiration he has towards Gwyn for her progress and healing.

Then leave.

You're not going to see Gwynriel any more than I would see Elriel because I see nothing romance-coded about any of Elriel's interactions, and especially in ACOSF, I see Azriel being the main enforcer of Rhys's assessment that the IC stifles her.

Which he absolutely did by arguing against her choice to scry twice, regardless of what his intentions were.

I don't even think the feeling is mutual unless that mutual feeling is sexual, considering that's the main thought process he only had for her in his POV.

Just like how you assume Gwyn is wary of seeing the person who saved her from her most traumatic experience that caused her to go into hermit mode, or considering that the first thing Azriel did to her when he saw her was to offer a small smile, or even in his own POV, he blocked out that memory because he recognizes that is not the same person who is in front of him.

So, let's scale it back because the only thing that is actually canon is his feelings towards Mor, yes?

ACOSF shows that Azriel did not want Elain to do things she wanted but encourages Gwyn to do things she wanted.

ACOSF shows that Azriel stays away from Elain and barely acknowledges or talks to her but banters with Gwyn, observes what she's doing with positive descriptions.

ACOSF shows that Azriel was not happy to the point that it concerned Cassian, but we see dancing shadows and expressions of amusement the more time he spends with someone he doesn't consider as a friend.

Azriel treats Gwyn differently; that is the main point. I have yet to see a Gwynriel argument that, at the end of ACOSF, Azriel has feelings for Gwyn, compared to the Elriels who seem convinced that Azriel will continue to pursue Elain after he felt he had been proven right by staying away or that Elain will degrade herself by chasing a male who called what they were about to do a mistake. We are waiting for Gwynriel's book for SJM to tell us their love story, just like we are waiting for Elucien's book for theirs.

actually making this post now bc i'm sick of people claiming anything remotely sexual or even kissing happening to the party (an opinion that often pops up in the context of byler) in s5 would be horrible, sexualising, or out of character for the show

ST has always had a realistic approach to kids growing into their sexualities. the show's never shied away from directly addressing sex and sexual feelings so i'm honestly amazed by the extremely puritan interpretation of the show. i'm assuming, in good faith, that a big part of it is coming from people not having seen the actual show in ages and are just forgetting how explicitly the show handles sexuality. instead of just assuming it's from culturally raised christian people, who feel uncomfortable seeing any portrayal of sexuality, no matter how tasteful or realistic

i'm also saying all this as an ace person myself, i get not being into sex and not wanting to see it. however, refusing to acknowledge entire themes of a fictional show just because i don't experience them is bizarre to me. sexuality is vitally important to a lot of the characters and isn't just there to be fun(gross). essentially, ST is the opposite of porn without plot

so just as a little reminder what's actually IN Stranger Things. canonically.

TLDR: the show has never shied away from explicitly addressing sexuality. buying into the puritan fanon version of the show is going to make your s5 viewing experience worse because that show doesn't exist

season 1

we're starting the show off with Stancy, which is very sexually charged in general. (even in s4 Nancy still experiences physical attraction to Steve despite them having unchanged compatibility) the plot surrounding them in s1 explicitly focuses on Nancy having sex with Steve and later regretting that choice. the scene that everyone remembers, is of course, the "explicit" (not really, because ST is really tasteful with how it shows these teens explore themselves) sex scene

they're in sophomore and junior year of highschool here. around 15 and 16 years old - yet the show doesn't shy away from letting them figure things out. and it's not like this sexual theme is contained in only that scene. it keeps coming back the whole season as Nancy tries to sort her feelings out and deals with the aftermath of that night

also sidenote here while still at Steve and his party: even Steve's friends are very casual with their sexualities. and yes, they can even explicitly mention sex and specific sexual acts, no holding back here

Nancy's character conflict in s1 very much hinges on her sexuality and sexual themes. and it's not like there is a magic you need to be at least this old rule to know what sex is on the show like so many people seem to believe, because even 12 year old Mike seems to very much know what his sister and Steve are up to. he even goes out of his way to use it against her

iconic line! but i've seen insane takes trying to spin this into something not alluding to something sexual. i'm sorry to say if he doesn't think they're full on having sex he at least thinks they're getting very intimate with each other regardless

so not even the youngest characters on the show are "innocent and pure" the way fandom likes to claim when it comes to sexuality. and of course they aren't. real 12 year olds know what sex is, they're young not oblivious

and the following seasons make that even more obvious

season 2

as of s2 the kids are getting more involved with the sexual jokes, not just making them about other people but even being directly involved with those themes themselves. which is also realistic. with 13 sexuality starts to get thrown your way by every possible form of media. lots of them start developing crushes, have no idea how relationships work, etc. it's messy, typical teens thrown into the dating game. (i say all of this from a developmental media psychology perspective thanks uni and not personal experience sorry lmao, i'm a bit too ace to have my own input here)

s2 features comedic and awkward mentions of sex(ual activity) towards Lucas and Max,

older peers giving their 13 year old friends well meant advice on how relationships work,

and has even younger characters play around with attraction/kissing/love as well, which is incredibly normal for kids to do at that age

they're all young and the show treats growing up realistically. while the theme of attraction or sexuality gets more relevant for them (in scenes that are often received with awkwardness by the characters themselves) the show offers them safe territory to stand on. none of them are directly confronted with sexuality and are instead offered people to seek advice from for example

meanwhile the sexuality theme for the older kids is still very much explicit. just as Nancy's arc is still heavily tied to her romance and sexuality (which ties into her non conformity themes - she's an ambition driven person trying to escape the culdesac life first and foremost)

not only do we get another sex scene (this time with a cut away), there's also explicit jokes about it after

sexuality on the show is continuously awkward and messy. Jonathan and Nancy are only 16-17 here - no one really knows what they're doing or what the right way to go ahead is and Jonathan rightfully almost does a spittake here. out of pocket Murray

sexuality. is. awkward. (we get is s2 thanks)

season 3

s3 gets even more explicit with it's awkward puberty sexuality themes

from Dustin talking about how much he likes kissing Suzie (and her liking him not having teeth for it?) which weirds Steve out to the repeating, awkwardly received, "happy screams joke" (which gets a callback in later scene)

sexuality is still awkward for them. it's a realistic approach to what 14 year olds act like and know. they're actively dating by now, they're kissing people And have messy relationship situations. all while still acknowledging knowing what sex and attraction is, duh, of course they know that. but i'm explicitly pointing it out because i see obscene amounts of people claiming the characters are completely sheltered and even implying that they know what sex is would be gross. to that i say, do you not remember being 14???

and while i'm at s3, also let it be mentioned that even the adults are suffering at the hands of the sexuality theme here. Hopper's hookups with random women are focused on in s1, but now that he's getting closer with Joyce they get very explicitly told to just have sex. literally

not putting the whole dialogue in here, i already have too many images because there's so many sex mentions in this show and he really just tells them their mating ritual is painful and they should tear their clothes off and fuck right now

season 4

and s4 has stopped just confronting the kids with the existence of sexuality, but is tentatively starting to explore mature themes more directly - which allows them to tentatively start exploring their own sexualities instead of just having to acknowledge the general concept of sexuality

Max gets to ogle shirtless Steve

Lucas has something under his bed that's never confirmed as anything except "100/10 gross" but had 90% of the audience i saw immediately assume something sexual (magazines or the like)

and has a bunch more direct nudges, from the kids "experimenting sexually" as Murray says

to Argyle explicitly telling Jonathan he needs to have sex with Nancy again

to Hopper and Joyce's escalating make out in a church while shirtless

to visual innuendos (i'm looking at you hose scene. this one wouldn't be such a big deal if there wasn't a genuine moral panic about it last year. which was crazy. people literally had to pretend the scene didn't exist to escape the witchhunting mobs, except instead of being killed for magic it'd be for looking at a canon scene and acknowledging it. crazy times - aside from that there's also more visuals you can take as innuendos in s4e1 which there's already posts about out there so i'm not getting into them here, i'm more focused on the overt textual references)

to Yuir extensively talking about pleasing women and making them cum (I'm sparing you from that, the sc in at the top was already enough)

to explicit graffities all over the place, like here as an example "give me head until i'm dead" which is in frame for the whole phone call and Steve talking about his bitchlesness. and is also some of the only easily legible text (i hope this is readable, most of my screenshots kind of died a bit so maybe you need to look at an actual clip to see the text)

that is aside from the "DRUGS" poster which touches on another point s4 makes. the show doesn't just explore sexuality, it also puts the kids into more mature situations in general (not talking about the deaths, this is a horror show), specifically drugs

Jonathan uses weed as a coping mechanism the whole season and Eddie even sells the stuff in full bags (insane weed selling practices btw, even i know that). Chrissy (17-18) wants to do weed and ketamine. and we also see Lucas (14) hungover after drinking at a party for the first time

the show does not shy away from portraying realistic teen experiences

Murray called s4 very well, the kids pound some bears, smoke some ganja, play nintendo, and experiment sexually

literally. you have drinking, weed, and confusing queer sexualities. they took this list step by step

and all of those pretty normal things teens tend to explore. and i say that as someone who was decidedly not into those things. the ace experience is a bit different, but i can still acknowledge how that period was like for my allo friends and people in general

there is an extreme push in this fandom to reject any form of sexual jokes or references in the show, made mostly by people being uncomfortable with portrayals of sexuality. however, the themes not only still exist, they're also very prominent throughout all 4 seasons and are important to a lot of the characters directly

and it's also noteworthy here to see how ST approaches it's sexuality theme. it grows with the characters. starting out as jokes and being received with awkwardness to slowly letting them figure things out on their own time and turns. an extremely realistic progression and very common for coming of age narratives such as ST. it's a far cry from shows exploring sexuality or sexual themes for the sake of the viewers enjoyment like Euph0ria (don't want it to show up in tags)

based on what we currently know s5 could very well be taking place in 1988 or later which would place the party at around 16-17 years old. going into the season with the fanon version of the show that is completely clean and non sexual will 100% set you up for disaster

ST is very realistic and non exploitative with it's exploration of teen sexuality so there is obviously nothing to worry about in the sexualization department, that's just puritan fear mongering. however, it's very likely that we're going to get more than holding hands or pecks on the lips from the characters that are now older than characters we've explicitly seen hook up before. there could be more intimate scenes or making out, yes. but there's also at least one basically guaranteed vulgar joke in there, all seasons have them

there's no real theorizing or speculation about s5 here, anything could happen and i'm not placing bets, i want the characters narratives to be wrapped up well first and foremost and trust the writers to do it well. however, going into s5 with some of the mindsets i've seen circulating on here and expecting the show to be "clean" and cater to a version of it that's never existed outside of purified fandom could genuinely make you feel blindsided by the shows canon themes

not targeted at anyone or anything specifically, just using this as a bit of a reality check of what the show is actually like after recently rewatching all of it in one go

LIKE SHE DOESN'T EVEN QUESTION IT FOR A SECOND. She just knows that Light's statement is true at its face value & since she knows him well: therefore I raise you ACE Light.

Then this exchange between Ryuk & Light:

Ryuk makes a reference to finger-banging and Light's response? 'Looks are all that count!' Light is so ace it's cute haha.

Instance #3:

Light looks at p0rno mags and Soichiro is SHOCKED. Now of course it's because he thinks that Light was too upstanding/well-behaved for this sorta thing but I cannot help but wonder... if Light being interested at looking at girls that way, might've seemed a lil too far-fetched to Soichiro. And just how is Light looking at the scantily-clad women? Take a look:

Of course, Light's goal is to pretend that this is why he was checking if anyone entered his room and yet he cannot look more disinterested. It's not convincing that he'd go all through the trouble of ensuring nobody entered his room and look like -_- towards the p0rno mags he had tried so hard to hide. He's in the privacy of his room (yes there are hidden cameras & no Light isn't meant to know about them) and the least he can do in what I remind you that it's a Shonen manga which means that it's targeted towards young male teens so they couldn't show him jerking off or anything is to look like he's interested/attracted to these women but nope.

Light with all his acting skills cannot manage to look interested (let alone sexually interested) in women shown in these mags. So Light is not straight confirmed. Ace Light strikes AGAIN.

So it's logical to assume that Light is ace. Yeah yeah I know you don't really need canon basis for your headcanons but as I said before Ace Light is more than just a headcanon to me :D

Unpopular Hobie takes/opinions

Him and Gwen actually have pretty good romantic chemistry and if it were up to me they would've been canon instead of Ghostflower with Miles having moved on from Gwen romantically and Gwen thinking of him purely platonically from the get-go

But also,they work just as well as found siblings and NOT parent-child because even with the interpretation of adult Hobie,he has Dad Friend vibes,not Actual Dad ones.The one thing i would change about romantic Ghostpunk also is making Gwen a half white afrolatina since Hobie would be poc4poc for obvious reasons

The trope of him being a popular target of thirst on Earth 138 thanks to being in a band is honestly kind of stupid because yes he's objetively handsome as fuck(/platonic)but also he's also a black person living in 1970s England.Speaking from the experience of a biracial homecountry raised afrolatino who grew up with the white side of his family only and went to predominantly white/nonblack poc schools,he definitely gets a lot of comments on his apperance but not positive ones and the best he'll get from most is a backhanded compliment

This is highly dependent on when she finds out and how she finds out, in my opinion.

Personally, I struggle a lot with fics where Jess is immediately okay with it and even kinks on incest because it often feels like an easy way to avoid conflict and drama. In an effort to sketch out her character, it feels more like she's positioned as a "cool girl" plot device who is down for anything rather than a fully formed, real person with feelings that can be hurt. So for a situation where Jess eventually becomes okay with it, I imagine it would take a lot of work and development to get there.

My primary thought would be an AU where Jess lives, but in the process is injured and traumatized, and feeling deeply hurt and betrayed by Sam who she discovers has been lying and ommiting truths, leaving her vulnerable. If she chooses to go with them, it would need to be for herself and her own peace of mind, but in the process, she would be getting to know Sam as he is and not as he presented himself, all his dark parts and secrets, and not knowing if she can love this Sam when she fell in love with an illusion. In this AU, I imagine she becomes closer to Dean by default of there being no history, Dean is a clean slate, Dean hasn't lied to her and made her believe he was someone he wasn't. A writer would have to develop Dean and Jess as a separate relationship and dynamic, then have Jess open up to Sam again.

As for her finding out about Sam and Dean in this scenario, I think depending how everything unfolds and develops is what would make or break it. I don't think Jess is in a position to immediately accept it because I imagine she's lived a fairly regular life, and while I think people are cool with things in fiction, it's another thing entirely to have it shoved in your face in reality. I imagine in the best case scenario, with development, it's still a shock to her system and she would have to reconcile everything else that has happened, on top of finding out the man she was going to possibly marry is in love with his brother. So I waver on if she can fully commit and be all in, or not, which I don't blame her at all for and would rather a more realistic and messy possible break up, over a situation that rings hollow and false.

As for finding out during the canon Stanford timeline, I can't imagine any other scenario than her assuming Dean had sexually abused Sam. This would be figuring something happened when Sam was underage, and that Dean being older and his caregiver meant he took advantage. I think she would loathe Dean in this scenario and attempt to help Sam with trying to get him therapy or give him books or find groups he can attend, all while Sam continues to insist it was never like that and wholeheartedly defending Dean. I imagine she would be cold to Dean when he shows up in the pilot and unable to figure out why Sam would want to go off with him.

I also like scenarios where Sam confesses half-truths, like he was younger when he lost his virginity to somone older and Jess using context clues and coming to the worst conclusions. In these scenarios, Jess means well and is trying to help Sam because she loves him and she's never going to be able to wrap her mind around in what world any of this would be okay, or even understandable. She doesn't have the same frame of reference or experience. I personally would love to see more fics that explore the complexities and nuances of what it would be like to be Jess and having to come to terms with all this information, as well as fics that don't necessarily end in a happy poly Sam/Dean/Jess situation, but rather Jess realizing the best thing for her would be to walk away.

Have I ever said anything like that? No, definitely not. Raising the subject of "canon" in this universe would bring controversial reactions, I was aware of that. But the fact is that when we talk about "canon" in Hannibal, we assume that he and Clarice will find a way to each other in the end. That's not the wishful thinking of some stubborn SOTL fan, it's just what Thomas Harris has decided. Period.

I've never refuted the fact that Hannibal is possibly bi. In my opinion, he's a very complex character who can't be pigeonholed in terms of his sexual orientation. The book (which many nbc fans probably don't know, otherwise you can't talk about "canon" with Hannigram) hints on Hannibal Lecter being demiromantic and only feels attraction to people with whom he has built up a strong emotional bond. Many of his behaviours and characteristics point to this. And do you see what I mean?

Theoretically, this could also suggest Will - although his interest in Will is more indifferent and manipulative, while he actually builds up something with Clarice that many people can't put a name to.

To sum this up, many scenes and lines from the nbc series that are adored beyond measure by the fandom were originally material from the books/original films. Scenes from Hannibal and Clarice that used to represent female emancipation and empowerment in a world where women are mostly suppressed in her abilities by men. Clarice Starling is being sexualized in more than just one way in her career but ultimately it's none less than her to solve the case. Do I need to list individually what I'm referring to? I guess not.

i saw your evgeniy post and i totally agree that it wouldnt work out the same at all if genya was male, maybe he would work directly for the king but either way im willing to bet the fandom wouldnt be victimising him to that extent and the character probably would be allowed to stay morally grey instead of being forced to be "good".

as per your comments too: they probably gave ivan a love interest for "representation points" but if the show character was played more accurately to the book and looked more like book ivan people would probably ship him with the darkling a lot more and talk about him having unrequited love or whatever which is fine but certainly cheapens the characters motives.

also i dont think alina would have got on with genya if she was in a red kefta from the start as its like she saw genya in livery as "on the same level as her" as a servant and outsider, its my firm belief that if genya was introduced to alina as corporalki to start with her prejudice would kick in and she wouldnt trust her at all as she seems more prejudice against corporalki than any of the other orders (aside from the darkling)

I don't think the King would require services of Tailor. The Queen remains the obvious choice for that, although there would be issues.

Regarding narrative-treatment... well, my guess is he wouldn't live long. Just look at Ivan- he wasn't easily brainwashed character, so he had to die to prop up brand new Good Guy™. Zhenya wouldn't be re-written into one-dimensional victim, because it would be easier to simply kill him off (preferably in a way emphasizing he picked the wrong side).

Fandom would simply ignore him, because he's a man in Aleksander's service. His backstory, missing sexual abuse "orchestrated" by the Darkling would also lose its appeal to antis. Loss of loved ones or torture just doesn't have the ring to it, when aimed at a man. Hell, if we'd make the King "fond" of teen boys, or came up with another molester, Evgeniy's story would include different variables. Women are easier to woobify, but then again, it could be "fixed" by making the boy gay, or better- headcanon gay. Everyone knows that makes you easier to exploit, so we can pretend lack of agency equals unfavourable circumstances etc. etc.

Since we know almost nothing about book!Ivan's personal life, I didn't mind his and Fedyor's romantic relationship, quite contrary- both actors used their minimal screentime to introduce the best romance in season 1 (in both, if I'm honest).

Ivan's in danger of simplification of his motivations no matter the looks. While book Ivan's described as good-looking, in show he's already canonically MLM. Both can work as a good enough reason to turn his loyalty into unrequired crush. Why delve into anything more complicated, if your view requires demonisation of the Darkling?

Absolutely agree on Genya's position and Alina's "friendship". Alina has been distrustful of other Grisha since the beginning. Sure, her belief she's a fraud played a part, but that would apply to Genya in red too. Grisha without colour didn't fit in. Useless Sun Summoner wouldn't either, once her incompetence becomes widely-known. Alina doesn't exactly believe in selfless unconditional friendship. Hell, she takes and takes from Genya, while offering little, with Malyen she assumes the opposite position.

Thoughts on Hux's sexuality

Please don't come for me this has been in my drafts for 6 months :]

So obviously, it's a big thing in this fandom to think Hux is gay. Which, I can see how people might see him as queer coded (and in some surface ways he is). Despite his homophobic vibes he's probably not homophobic since homophobia doesn't really exist in Star Wars as far as I know. But I was actually sitting back and thinking about it, and given his childhood abuse and backstory, I honestly seriously doubt he's gay.

Hux has spent his entire life being physically and psychologically abused by other men, be it his father, his fathers friends, Snoke (if you can call that nasty guy a man), or Kylo Ren. There is no Canon media of Hux being abused by non-men. Given the PTSD he has to have from these experiences, there is no way he would easily trust another person enough to be in a relationship with them, let alone a man (and we already know from Canon that hux is not a trusting person). Is it possible that he'd end up in a M/M relationship? Of course. Likely? I don't think so. If he did, it would be very likely it would be toxic or unhealthy.

Men are a threat to Armitage. They want to ursurp him. They want to hurt him. They want to use him for their own ends and then discard him. In a patriarchal organization like the First Order (albeit less so than the empire), men are the primary threat to his own stability.

So based on this analysis Armitage is either somewhere on the aroace spectrum (from trauma), OR he is on some level attracted to the opposite gender.

Why would the last thing make sense? That depends on a few things.

First, if Armitage had positive contact with his mother on Arkanis (as most of us like to assume, because um yes Armitage's mom we love her), he would crave nurturing presence of females after he was separated from her and, even as he grew older and more emotionally detached, there are primal human urges that he cannot erase. He was five when he left Arkanis. He could have known his mother long enough to understand that. Likewise, his protector and mentor, at least for a time, was Rae Sloane, a woman. Rae Sloane, at least for some time, protected and mentored Hux. As Hux grew up, the people who helped him tended to be women, and the people who abused him were men.

This is not to bash any ships with Hux or anything, just my own thoughts on the subject. Obviously this is all just speculation, but it's also explanatory to why a lot of pairings with Hux end up so abusive or out of character. His backstory and personality and struggles make writing a good ship with him immensely difficult, no matter what gender he's shipped with.

*Notes: Tenzin is way more of a black sheep here than the golden child in canon. Him and Aang having a hard relationship because of the expectations placed on him is one thing I'm very proud of. I think he feels like he has to be this perfect son and feels like he can't approach Aang about it. And Toph is a less than understanding person, so he can't really talk to her either. His biggest regret is never opening up to his father before he died. So he suffers in silence (lmao)*

Third child of Aang and Toph

Brown hair, green eyes; resembles both Toph and Aang (has the complexion of Toph's father)

She also has a deep love for Ba Sing Se because that's where her mother is from. Some might call her reserved before they get to know her, to her friends she's one of the nicest people ever

No one knows if she's actually a Firebender or not, she's never confirmed or denied it even to her closest friends. Doesn't feel the need to. Looks at it like a political strategy; no one can say she's favoring benders or nonbenders. She is a master swordswoman, though

Archeologist, Historian, Fire Lord

*Notes: I decided not to choose if Izumi's a bender or nonbender. I like the theory that she keeps is secret in canon as a political move. I don't know if they kept it vague in canon on purpose, but I like it that way. I kind of based her off Nico Robin from One Piece*

since you are a queerbaiting scholar, I have a question that I don't remember if you've ever covered. Do you think the t'hy'la footnote in the Star Trek TMP novelization could be considered an example of queerbaiting or is it just too iconic to fall under that category?

oh unequivocally like for clarification for people i guess who have a more narrow and specific definition of queerbait i do think it like kind of dodges around the entire central conceit of hoped for "gay representation" or something that is not really the lens i think its viewed thru in 70s fandom the way it was in 2010s as in like the way people frame queerbaiting they want characters to join this pantheon of confirmed gay characters fitting a mold of existing gay characters on tv to some degree and nobody was assuming like from that tease that kirk and spock would be portrayed as a couple in future movies or anything the way the queerbait dance between creator and fandom was portrayed in 2010s queerbait discourse but i think it was probably the first and most high profile attempt to date for a creator to try and mediate the relationship between the media property shippers and ship haters through like a direct communication of like canon material i guess like i would have to go on a pretty big deep dive back into some of the random star trek zines ive looked at to find sources again im struggling to find it right now but i know i read some various responses from fans at the time and kirk/spock shippers did react negatively to the footnote in much the same way people reacted to like ship tease jokes in classic queerbait tv shows on tumblr which i found really interesting people did think it was trying to shut kirk/spock shippers down just as much as people thought it was energizing them and speaking to them it really threads the needle so perfectly by like opening the door to a whole new type of possibility and whatever to the types of people who want that while also in text saying theyre not lovers hah hah isnt that weird which i think some fans also felt uncomfortable about because it was like shining a light on their niche corner of the fandom letting people know there were people who thought the relationship between kirk and spock might be romantic but again ive only read like two accounts of this so i honestly have no clue how widespread each type of reaction was i wonder if it also like re inflamed fights about if they do or dont have sex lol because that was a whole thing which is slash was for people who believed it was sexual vs kirk&spock was like homoerotic friendship to nonsexual romance fanfic and these were bitter fandom divides as well but of course and like this isnt to paint it all in a negative light but i do think the dissenting voices get a bit lost in the history and i thought it was kind of fascinating how similar a lot of the weird mediations felt to like some actor at comiccon 2012 saying well i dont know but it could be romantic you know it creates the perfect vessel for everyone to see what they want thru it so i think in many ways it was groundbreaking queerbait but also tbh did it better than anything else like truly stoking the fires of fan speculation and probably introduced a lot of people to the idea of "the premise" and planted the seeds in their minds to begin with and again few other queerbait texts are out here inventing special words that mean lover for the characters to call each other few people that bold like again somewhat different context but it does kind of feel like a first of its kind broaching into that messy dynamic between fans and the powers that be as they sometimes called them and truly a fascinating iconic piece of queerbait history

I don’t think I’ve read it enough to have a sense of something like this. I really disliked Laurie’s scenes with Adrian though. So it’s not so much ‘he wouldn’t say that’ as ‘I would prefer to ignore the fact that he said/did that.'

I think they did. The first time I read it, I didn't really wonder if something had happened, only what had happened: I didn’t know if they’d only kissed or done anything more. Later, it seemed to be confirmed by Ralph’s letter that they’d not done ‘anything more,’ I just assumed it was a kiss, and I don’t really think the dialogue following the ellipses makes much sense without anything having happened. “Now you see what I mean, Spud. It would never have done, would it? Well, goodbye.” What could Laurie have seen if there was nothing besides a hug or handshake or something? What would never have done? Why ask him to ‘come here’ at all?

'This is not Ancient Greece, stop being weird,' at the exact moment Andrew is telling him his traumatic life-story and Laurie is preoccupied worrying about Dave. Also related to the question, but not really asked for: if I could I’d also tell Andrew he doesn’t have to feel ashamed of how he feels about Laurie. Well, more accurately, I’d give him a modern copy of ‘Quaker Faith & Practice’ and have the relevant passages highlighted, so I know he won’t miss them. It makes me very sad for both Andrew and Dave that their whole lives could've been very different (and much happier) if they were born four or five generations later.

9. What's a question you have about TC? One you haven't found an answer for yet.

I can't think of any, besides wondering how Mary Renault could've written it because it's so good. I love the use of subtext, the way she describes emotions you've felt before but never would've been able to put into words on your own. In terms of characters and story, I do have a random question about Bunny: was it supposed to be implied that he was a perpetrator of sexual assault? I got that idea when I was reading the car scene between him and Laurie but I was unsure.
