he’s born on a warm day in juneau , his mother’s the bringer of spring with a halo of golden hair that’s wrapped around her head . she loves him , tells the bloodied baby in her arms that his father loves him too - but jonah never gets to know . robbed of memory , he doesn’t remember being grabbed from limp arms as his mother meets thanatos - the first of many deaths that he’ll cause . cursed by a god that’s supposed to love him , he’s left with an uncle who sees a dead sister in him , but his aunt tries to love him anyway . she wants kids , her husband never wanted any - jonah’s a blessing in disguise .

& oh , is he loved . aunt marjorie picks him up from practice & wraps his sore ankles , gives him snacks on the way to school & convinces uncle jeff to take him fishing . life is good , even if his guardians always share a hesitant look when he talks about the griffins flying overhead or the cyclops who ran past the school . they know that his mother attracted a god , the life of the party , of course only she could attract godhood . they wrap him in their arms every night & recite prayers to gods he can’t pronounce , kiss him goodnight before they retreat to their room . he can hear them boarding up the house every night before he goes to bed .

ten years old on a fishing trip when uncle jeff falls overboard . nobody believes jonah when he says he was pulled over by a creature with impossibly long teeth , or that jonah closed his eyes & heard his uncle pop before disappearing - a misuse of power , aunt marjorie explains that accidents happen . but , she doesn’t try to anger him much after that ; she doesn’t have to worry , she looks the wrong way at a monster on the way to the airport & jonah watches as she’s flung so far into the woods he can’t see her disappear . he emerges from the wilderness with so bloodied & dirtied they think he’s responsible , but it’s not human blood that’s found on him . they don’t know what it is .

the mainland awaits him , several years jumping from family member to family member before finally - a cousin in new york when he’s fifteen . noah’s cool , he’s in his twenties & cleared out an entire room to take care of him & jonah finally remembers what it’s like to be home & happy . the eve of his sixteenth birthday , he discovers a series of letters from family members over the years - they’re all dead . uncle jeff , aunt marjorie , aunt kelsey in oregon , aunt janice in wisconsin . his story unfolds before him , he’s dangerous , the son of a god - & suddenly , he knows the name of the gods marjorie & jeff used to say .

he begs noah to take him to camp half blood , tells him he doesn’t want noah to die either . his cousin is cool , laughs & reassures him that the westcott lineage is strong , that they can’t be wiped out that easily - but after pressuring & pestering , he finally agrees to bring jonah to camp . minutes down the road , noah’s car hits a patch of black ice & jonah doesn’t remember anything but waking up with a healing scar & notice of his cousin’s death .

dionysus claims him the instant they meet , admits his paternity expecting gratefulness but jonah only moves into his cabin by throwing his things . over the next few years he grows into ... a gremlin of a camper . deadly behind a short sword , deadlier behind his words . fights with camp during the war ( barely , almost spent the whole thing at camp instead ) & when lyssa admits secession from camp , almost joins her - but chooses to stay around to cause as much havoc as he can before leaving .

Everyone has a specific smell, but no essence gives you particular emotions, except your soulmate on.

The smell of your own mother for many was reassuring, but for Jason was terrifying, or at least what he was used to smell: alcohol. The child barely remembered what the fragrance of Beryl Grace was: lemon, aerosol and … What else? By now it was always covered by the revolting smell of alcohol. The blue eyes expressed all his terror, while his mother, for the umpteenth time drunk, was screaming at him things that a child couldn’t yet understand, he was only two years old after all.

Before the situation could degenerate, the door opened and a nine-year-old girl appeared in the doorway, so different from Jason that few would have understood that they were brothers. Two things united them: blue eyes and the smell of storm. «Thalia!» the blond squeaked running towards his sister and hugging her. The black-haired girl hugged him back as their mother looked at them with disdain, a look that the newcomer returned «Quiet I’m here, now we go to our bedroom, ok?» Jason nodded and took the older by the hand.

Unfortunately, their only parent didn’t seem to have appreciated Thalia’s glare, so she came up with staggering strides «Where do you think you’re going Miss?» she slurred, grabbing her by the hair with an unexpectedly solid grip. «Now the two of us will have a talk!» she jerked her away from her brother, causing panic in the two.

Jason began to cry again and tried in vain to help the girl, with the only result of being pushed to the ground. But Thalia was anything but docile, so she began to wriggle like a trapped animal. «Ah, you stupid brat!» the woman let her daughter go, bringing a hand to her face, where she had been scratched. The two brothers were already running down the corridor to their bedroom, where they locked themselves up. The screams went on for a few minutes, but in the end Mrs. Grace gave up and the last thing the two children heard from her was the door that was being slammed. That day, former actress Beryl Grace died in a car accident.

Jason didn’t see the ball coming, that explained the reason of the incessant laugh of his friends Nico and Reyna. The fact that this was one of the rare occasions in which Nico laughed so much was a great source of disappointment for the boy. Reyna wiped a tear «Are you okay Jason? What has been more painfull, the ball or falling from the clouds?» the latin-american girl scoffed him, sitting next to him and offering him a bottle of water «Aha, funny» he replied, raising his eyes to the sky and taking a sip of water. The dark haired boy let himself fall on the grass «Yes, very funny, anyway, Reyna is right, today you seem rather distracted» Jason chuckled «It must be your heady smell of chips» Nico glared at him. The smell of the boy was quite special indeed: pomegranate, chrysanthemums and fries, Will, however, swore that when he was in a bad mood he could even hear the smell of wet earth. Reyna instead smelled of ebony, magnolia and burnt, but it wasn’t a stink, it didn’t bother. Nobody knew where the essence of a person came from.

«See, you’re getting distracted again» the girl scolded him «Did something happen?» she asked, suddenly serious. The blond shook his head «No, it’s just that today I seemed to smell a peculiar fragrance, but the moment was too short» he sighed «It was the result of my imagination». Reyna and Nico exchanged a knowing look, but they didn’t say anything, not wanting to give false hope to their friend, so they changed subject and the afternoon passed quickly.

Once he returned home, Jason immediately understood that Annabeth was there with Percy and that no one else was at home. He didn’t smell the essence of Paul, nor that of Sally, nor that of Thalia. The living room smelled of lemon, ink and paper. The boy hoped he hadn’t arrived at an inconvenient time, but just then his cousin came out of the kitchen, bringing with him the smell of sea, biscuits and chlorine. «Did my arrival interrupt you two?» he asked, part joking and partly serious. Percy punched him on the shoulder, giggling «Luckily no, Annie is helping me study and now she’s upstairs. I ran off with the excuse of having to go to the bathroom, but in reality I simply could not stand it anymore» he said, letting himself fall theatrically on the sofa «As if I had not understood it by myself». Jason turned around, finding behind him the blonde smirkingly smiling «Hello Jason» the boy returned the greeting, while Annabeth was lying next to his soulmate «For today it may be enough» she sighed, referring to the study, and receiving a kiss on the cheek as a thank you. Jason smiled, he was happy that his cousin, even if they were like brothers, had a girl like that at his side. So he decided to go to his own room to leave them a bit ‘of intimacy, but as he walked away he was struck by a phrase said by the blonde «She will start school tomorrow, today she just came with her parents to discuss the last details …» for a moment the boy thought about stopping and asking her who she was talking about, but then he shook his head and continued up the stairs.

Jason closed the locker and found Reyna at his side «You don’t seem to have slept well» the girl noticed. The blond leaned his forehead against the green cabinet «Not at all» he sighed. He had spent the whole night thinking about that scent and what he had heard from Annabeth, the result: he was dead tired and had not come to any conclusion. At that time they were also reached by Nico, who sipped coffee with disappointment «This brodaglia sucks» he frowned and Jason looked at him imploring «Can I have it then?» The Italian didn’t hesitate and left the drink to the blond «This is the ‘last time I don’t do it at home» he mumbled. On that day the three began with the same course, so they headed together to the history classroom, where Mr Brunner was waiting for the class.

Once inside Jason sat down with Nico, while Reyna found herself next to Frank. However, although they were all present, there remained an empty desk, next to Gwen and Hazel were, who both looked confused, and Chiron, or Brunner, had not yet made the appeal. It was then that a girl who no one seemed to know entered. He had chocolate-colored hair cut irregularly with a few braids on the sides, the skin of a color similar to that of the Native Americans. Her clothes were simple, but his beauty was still breathtaking. But it wasn’t that thing that hit Jason, it was her smell. It invested him completely and then he understood: it was the same he had smell the day before. Even the girl looked dazed and at the moment their eyes met they both understood what was happening «Oh here your are Miss McLean, guys, welcome your new school mate, Piper McLean».

«I swear, no scent has ever affected me that way, it was a strange feeling, it just seemed … The right one» Reyna looked skeptical «How can something smell right?» Nico intervened in defense of the boy «Well, it’s not a feeling that can be explained, when you’ll meet your soulmate you’ll understand it» there was a moment of silence «That was rude» Jason said, but Reyna smiled and shrugged «No, he’s right» so she bit her slice of pizza and looked at her friends. «So, what was her fragrance?» Nico asked «The first thing I perceived was the smell of roses, much stronger than I had ever smell» the blond recalled «Then strawberries, but not the fruit itself, more like a strawberry lip gloss» he put a hand under his chin, dreamily «And then cinnamon, sweet cinnamon» he concluded. The shortest of the three pretended to vomit «You look like a teenage girl in love» the Puerto Rican girl gave him an amused glance «You talk about Will the same way».

Before the boy could reply, someone approached their table, Annabeth and Percy. The blonde took the word «Guys, I have to introduce you a person» she beamed and moved to show the newcomer «She’s my friend Piper, Piper, they’re Jason, Nico and Reyna» Piper greeted them all, but Jason noticed the look she had reserved for him. So they must have done the other two sitting at the table «Nice to meet you Piper, can you excuse us a second?» with that said, Reyna got up and, along with Nico, took away two more than confused Percy and Annabeth. The girl smiled «I guess they both know it» Jason smiled and nodded «Would you like to go out and talk?».

«What do you mean with Jason is your soulmate ?!» Annabeth shouted «Shhh» said her friend, putting a hand on her mouth «No need to scream, and anyway yes, I had already figured it out this morning when while entering the history class rain, white moss and metal have been my welcome». The curly girl for once set aside the pudor and began to bounce around the room «And so today at lunch you have spoken?» the brunette joined the euphoria «Yes, this evening we’ll go out to get to know each other better». From that moment there was no trace of tranquility in the McLean house.

By the time Jason stopped the car, Piper was ready to take off the blindfold «No, hey, wait a minute» said the boy, taking her hands. The girl snorted and the blond got out of the vehicle, then went to the side other, helping her out. «Now let me guide you. Here, sit here» he said, letting her get on the hood. Once he stood at his side, he took a deep breath «Take it off» Piper wasted no time, but once the command was done she gasped «Jason it’s…» she didn’t even find the words to describe the landscape in front of them. They were probably on one of the hills that surrounded the city, and the latter stretched before them, studded with lights. The sky was clear of clouds, and without the light pollution the stars had never been so clear. Everything was so perfect and peaceful that it seemed surreal.

The chocolate-haired girl put her head on Jason’s shoulder «If you celebrate the six months anniversary like this, I expect great things for the year one» she chuckled «With you I can have rain with a clear sky» she raised her eyes up to him and Jason got lost inside for a while, as it often happened, while he watched them fade from green to brown, then go on blue. The smell of cinnamon inebriated his mind.

Finally the blond tilted his head and let their lips meet. The boy smiled in the kiss, feeling the taste of strawberry lip gloss on his lips, while his perfume covered the cinnamon. It wasn’t passionate, it wasn’t intense. But for both it was perfect.

Piper could not wish for a better evening. They were under the stars, holding hands and everything seemed just right. As well as Jason’s scent. The brunette moved her head from the shoulder to the boy’s chest, inebriating with the smell of white musk, which made her feel safe. Then there was the rain, a perfume that Piper loved madly. The metal wasn’t strong, but the girl had come to the conclusion that it only increased when the blond was angry, that was certainly not the case.

So they stayed there, side by side, with silence acting as a soundtrack, the stars as a backdrop, love as a protagonist.

A critique of toxic masculinity and black masculinity

Moonlight is a 2016 drama directed by Barry Jenkins, and is journey into the life and struggles of Chiron a black and gay man growing up in Florida. We see Chiron’s troubled childhood with him being bullied by other boys and his own mother. We see Chiron in high school start to recognize and feel shame for sexuality, and we see him act on his urges during his first homosexual experience with his friend. We later see Chiron as an adult and he has been shaped by spending time in prison and putting up walls and denying his true self to protect himself. The film reveals many problems with how toxic masculinity is socialized into young boys and some of the consequences of that. It also heavily criticizes many of the problematic norms embedded into black masculine culture.

The film uses the characters Juan and Chiron’s peers like Kevin to illustrate issues with toxic masculinity and black masculinity in particular. Juan is a Black Cuban immigrant who also happens to be a successful drug dealer and Chiron’s peers like Kevin are all ‘Urban’ Black kids living in rough neighborhoods where “being hard” is key to surviving. Juan finds young Chiron hiding in an abandoned motel room after he is chased into hiding by some bullies. Right away the film is introducing us to some of the problems in which the ways boys are raised to be masculine. Chiron is shown to be sensitive or “soft” along with being psychically smaller than many of the other boys around him. The boys around him perceive his small stature and drawn back nature as weakness. Chiron is from an early age identified as “Gay” by his peers before Chiron himself even really recognizes it.

The movie goes very far to affirm that in black families gender roles are placed on children from a very young age. We see this when Chiron goes to play soccer with friends and is questioned as to why he didn’t feel like sticking around and playing rough and rowdy with the other boys. When he responds that he “just doesn’t like it” his friend Kevin jeers him and asks “Why do you let them walk all over you” referring to the boys that bully Chiron and already call him gay despite Chiron being only 9 and not being aware of his sexuality. Kevin continues his speech to Chiron with “You gotta show em you hard”. This point about being “hard” comes back up many times and is usually tied to violence. It is used as a means of protecting ones’ self and their pride. If someone is messing with you hit them to show them that you can’t be messed with. If Someone hurt you, hurt them back to teach them a lesson. It’s a lesson that is taught to many young men but is an even more prevalent ideal In lower class minority groups epically in families where male guidance or father figures are absent. Another issue that Chiron faces is family issues. Chiron’s father is absent and his mother is addicted to crack cocaine and acts incredibly erratically. Chiron’s Mother is also a source of abuse as she like Chiron’s peers recognizes his homosexuality even before Chiron does going so far as to call 9 year old Chiron a “faggot” to his face. Chiron finds shelter with formerly mentioned drug dealer Juan and his girlfriend Teresa. Juan has an interesting role in Chiron’s life as well. Juan acts as a surrogate father to Chiron when Chiron has to escape his mother, but Juan is the one selling crack to Chiron’s mother thus making Chiron’s situation worse in the large scheme of things. Juan does try to rectify this by acting as a good influence on Chiron and teaching him to swim and just being generally nice to him. Juan’s drug dealer lifestyle does have an effect on adult Chiron and it’s not in the way Juan would’ve wanted but that will be touched on in a bit.

After his childhood we see Chiron as a teenager In high school. He is what some might describe as a “Nerd” he wears button up shirts and the jeans that are not the most stylish which I believe is another point where the director is criticizing stereotypical traits of masculine black men having to dress “hard” or gangster to appear like men. He is also just as drawn back and reserved as he was as a child because now his peers and himself are even more aware of his difference in sexuality. We see also during his teenage years toxic masculine behaviors being reinforced even more. In his culture and his economic standing violence is viewed as necessary. In his community of lower class broken minority families violence is also not uncommon, but most disturbingly is that violence in Chiron’s world is equated with manliness and honor. So to be a man and to protect your honor you have to be prepared to be violent. While violence is praised however, feelings and emotional healthy responses are looked down upon. Men who cry in Chiron’s society are equate with femininity which is than, equated with homosexuality, which is than associated with psychical weakness. So being that Chiron is not only gay but also in touch with his feelings (and having many reasons to cry considering his home situation) is often an easy target for bullying and harassment. Chiron eventually does open up to his friend Kevin where he reveals that he cries and Kevin reveals that he wishes he could cry to, they then share a homosexual encounter together realizing and accepting each other for who they are. Chiron’s moment of happiness is ruined the next day when one the school bullies peer pressures Kevin into helping him beat up Chiron, and out of fear of being ostracized by his peers Kevin complies and helps beat Chiron.

It is after this beating we see Chiron start to follow down some of the more dangerous paths of toxic masculinity. After his beating Chiron find the Bully who orchestrated the whole thing, a young man named Terrel that has a science class with Chiron. Chiron walks into his science class, walks up behind Terrel, picks up a desk chair and proceeds to beat Terrel over the head with it getting himself arrested. Chiron’s decsion to follow a path a violent revenge landed him in jail and when he is released we see him start to follow in the only father figure’s footsteps he’s known, Juan’s.

We see Chiron after he has been released from prison and he has now moved to Georgia and his new personality is almost unrecognizable. He is now “Hard”, he sells drugs, drives an old Cadillac with the same crown decoration on the dash board that Juan had, he carries a very large pistol, and describes himself as “on the street”. He even goes as far to have the flashy teeth Grillz and jewelry associated with gangster rap and the drug dealer lifestyle. Chiron has bought into the Toxic masculine lie and more specifically the Black male mold for the Alpha male role. He takes no shit anymore but he is also deeply separated from his emotions and no has resorted to crime to feel like a man.

Chiron is eventually contacted by Kevin who still lives in Florida who tells Chiron he misses him and apologizes for the fight that he was a part of. It’s in his reuniting with Kevin that the two kind of put it all out on the table and they express their feeling for each other, how they have moved on, and their feelings about the situation. The eventually come to terms with their feelings and the movie ends with a shot of Kevin and Chiron cuddling and comforting each other implying that they have accepted not only their pasts but their present and who they truly are and want to be.

Moonlight in my opinion is about a boy discovering manhood. Although he learns manhood is different than what he thought it was. Man hood isn’t being “hard”, it’s not being violent, it’s not taking unnecessary risks like selling drugs, and it’s not who you are sexually attracted to. Being a man is accepting the who you are inside, it takes courage, and it takes honesty to one’s self. A man can be in touch with his feelings, a man can cry, and a man can love another man and still be a man.

Solangelo Road Trip

I know this took two weeks, sorry, but here is that fic you requested @rachel-elizabeth-truth. It probably sucks, sorry about that. I haven’t done anything really solangelo related recently. Hope I didn’t mess them up too much.

Nico’s POV

I hate road trips.

Being stuck next to a bunch of obnoxious people singing along to annoying pop songs for hours on end? No thanks.

So how did I get here, packing the few things I have into a small backpack, preparing for one of these terrible horrible trips?

“Nico! Hurry up! Everyone’s waiti-“ I opened the door, interrupting Will.

“I’m ready. Though I don’t want to go,” I mumbled.

Children of Apollo must have super hearing or something. “I heard that. And I don’t care. You need to get out of that cabin and actually interact with human beings.”

“But I don’t want to interact with human beings,” I groaned.

He ignores me. Go figure. He just turned around and walked toward Half Blood Hill, expecting me to follow him. I rolled my eyes and trailed behind him, shuffling my feet, trying to make it as obvious as possible that I don’t want to go.

When we reached the top of Half Blood Hill, I saw the Seven.

Around Camp, they’re legends. It’s kind of ridiculous sometimes, how they’re seen as these brave warriors who are capable of anything. I’ve known them longer than most, and I know how much they don’t act like heroes. Except for maybe Jason and Annabeth. Though they’re both perceived as a bit more than they actually are. They’re just a bunch of teens who were given a lot of power and a lot of pain. Percy, for instance, is annoying, sarcastic, and dense. Not exactly your typical, Disney-type (I like the original Grimm tales better than the Disney versions Hazel makes me watch) knight in shining armor.

I’m a bit of a different story. I’m not as ostracized as I used to be, but I choose to be a bit apart from the group. Unfortunately, the seven, as well as Will, don’t let me. They sit at my table during meals, volunteer me for things I don’t want to do, and make me do things like road trips. It. Really. Sucks.

(I actually kind of enjoy it, but I’ll never admit that out loud).

Hazel came up and hugged me, as if I hadn’t seen her leaving the cabin earlier that morning. I let her, though I rolled my eyes.

“Don’t roll your eyes. It makes you seem annoyed that your sister is showing you affection.”

“Well…”

“Don’t finish that sentence,” she interrupted. “Anyways, are you ready? We’ve been waiting for you for ages.”

Leo was leaning on the door of the front passenger seat, restless as always. “So, we’ve got a bit of a problem. The van’s magic is wonky, and it’s stuck in 7 seat mode. It’s gonna be a bit squished.”

I groaned. Why does everything happen to me?

Everyone climbed into the car and claimed their spots. Argus was driving us (Thank goodness. I would never trust Jackson to drive me anywhere) and Leo had apparently claimed shotgun earlier. Percy, Annabeth, Jason, and Piper sat in the back, a bit squished, but they didn’t really care.In the middle, Hazel, Frank, and Will sat comfortably. Gods, if I have to sit next to sunflower boy, I’ll officially die.

Leo rolled down the window and smirked at me, still in place, not moving. "Get in the car, loser, we’re going shopping!”

I raised an eyebrow. “But…I thought this was a road trip?”

He rolled his eyes and looked back at the others. “Really, guys? You still haven’t shown this uncultured, 1930’s kid Mean Girls? That’s like, a necessity!”

Will opened the door, annoyance visible on his face. “Just get in Nico. Argus is getting impatient.”

I trudged towards the van, sure I was going to regret everything. I was about to squish between Hazel and the left door when the car suddenly started moving and I landed in Will’s lap. We both blushed hard. I tried to get up, but felt like something was tying me to the chair.

I turned and saw everyone in the car holding in laughs at my situation. “What the hell?! Why can’t I get up?”

Annabeth was the first to get over her giggles (more like snorts), and respond. “Chiron had the Hecate cabin make magic seatbelts because he doesn’t trust us to wear ours. They won’t come off until we turn off the car.”

My face paled. “S-So i’m stuck like this?! For how many hours?”

Argus grunted. Annabeth’s grin widened even more, which i didn’t think possible. “Looks like Argus isn’t going to stop for you. So you’re stuck like that until we have a pit stop. Which is in two and a half hours. Enjoy!”

I was going to shove my fist into her face, but I was restrained. And Percy would personally murder me. I’d like to live long enough to see Percy thrown up on by his baby sister.

I have strange priorities. You don’t need to tell me that much.

I was glad I was faced toward the front, and not towards Will. My face was redder than a tomato. I was pretty sure Will’s was too.

Everyone else, though, was talking about everything from the Romans’ next visit, to Leo’s latest antics.

Will and I stayed silent most of the time. He occasionally piped in, but I stayed silent the whole time. Hazel was saying something, but I was too focused on the boy beneath me. Why did it bother me so much that his shorts made his warm, sun kissed skin brush against my calves?

Hazel reached over and snapped her fingers in front of my eyes, making me jump a little. She rolled her eyes. “Nico! I was talking to you!”

“Sorry.”

She smirked. Oh no. “Were you too busy thinking about Will?”

My face turned beet red as everyone in the car laughed. I looked away towards the window. “I-I wasn’t thinking about him!”

I could feel Will smirk. “Oh, come on. I know how hard it is not to think about me.”

I turned towards him and glared. “Why would I think about you? I’m trying to cut down how much I gag in a day.

Suddenly, the car was silent except for our intense gazes.

“Aw, you’re trying to deny it,” Will cooed, pinching my cheek. I jerked away from his touch and grumbled a curse.

Will suddenly blushed and looked away. I say looked away, but with the tight space we were in, it was really just averting our eyes towards something other than each other.

I hate awkward silences. Especially when it’s between me and Solace. As well as the rest of the car.

Somehow, my face warmed even more when I realized the rest of the Seven were watching us. I looked at Hazel and Frank from the corner of my eyes. They were avidly watching, analyzing our every move. Will looked up and his face softened for a moment. He must have sensed my discomfort, because he glared at the others and they began to at like it had never happened. Which surprised me because he is about as intimidating as a puppy in a pile of candy.

I gave him a grateful smile, then glanced at Jason. He winked and gave me a thumbs up. I groaned and hit my head on Leo’s seat in front of me repeatedly. These people are going to cause my early death.

Well, technically it wouldn’t be “early,” but there’s no point in being technical with these people.

I began to wonder what was going on in Will’s mind.

Will’s Pov

I am going to die.

It’s official.

I’m going to die.

What do you do in a situation where your crush is sitting on your lap for two hours straight? Two hours of blushing, of looking anywhere but right in front of you, of trying not to kiss him senseless? Two hours of endless teasing from the 8 other people in the car? One of Argus’ eyes winked at me when Nico wasn’t looking.

I’m doomed.

I don’t know whether to be happy or sad that we’re taking a pit stop in half an hour.

I turned and noticed Piper trying to hold in her laughter but failing miserably. I stuck out my tongue childishly and it just made her laugh harder.

I huff, pouting. I turn back towards the front just to see Nico whip his head back around. I could see the tip of his ears were red. Was he…staring at me?

No, he couldn’t have been. He hates me. He could never like me back.

Suddenly, an Imagine Dragons song came up on the radio. I wasn’t familiar with it, but I recognized the band. Leo smirked at Percy and his eyes flickered towards me and Nico. Percy began belting out the lyrics, terribly I might add. Nico began to repeatedly bang his head on the seat in front of us. I couldn’t help but snicker at the sight. Obviously, the others were up to something, and it was annoying the heck out of Nico.

Annabeth caught on and sang in place of Percy. Piper and Jason followed, until the chorus came. Naturally, I already knew it before it even played. Perk of being an Apollo kid. Nothing Left To Say is actually pretty ironic considering what we’ve been through, but I digress.

Suddenly, I jumped at the voice that came out from right in front of me. Nico was…singing.

“There’s nothing left to say now!” Nico immediately covered his mouth with his hands, but the damage had been done.

“I told you it would work!” Percy called out between giggles.

I couldn’t help it. I began to snicker. Which turned into chuckles. Which turned into full-fledged snorts and laughter.

Nico pulls his hoodie over his face, trying to hide from the obnoxiously loud laughter surrounding him. I bit my lip to keep from cursing. Holy Hera that was adorable. This child of Hades is going to cause my doom.

What am I saying? He already has.

Nico’s POV

Just ten more minutes. Ten more minutes of being incredibly embarrassed over and over again. Great. Just great.

We neared the gas station without much happening. I was surprised at how easily we were able to drive with no monsters attacking us. In fact, it was too easy.

Then, I heard the growls.

Piper rolled her eyes. “There’s a monster right behind us, isn’t there?”

Wow. I spoke too soon.

Argus stopped the car in a parking spot in front of the convenience store. Hazel looked out the window. “Oh. Great. Three dracanae.” She opened the side door.

Will reached out to open the door on our side. I just stared at his hands like a creep. What I forgot was that I had been leaning on the door, and that the seatbelt had come off. I yelped and fell out of the car, landing on my butt. Solace, the rude ray of sunshine he is, fell over laughing. He seemed to have forgotten there was no door as well, because he fell and landed on his face.

I laughed possibly harder than I can ever remember laughing. I didn’t hear the screams of agony of the dracanae as the others tried to slay them as quickly as possible. All I saw were the tears streaming out of my eyes, and a certain blonde head bobbing up and down as we snorted and laughed over and over. Every time we stopped, we’d just look at each other and start laughing all over again.

Suddenly, I heard Leo groan. “Why are you two red-faced and panting?”

I whipped my head around so fast I almost got whiplash. The seven were staring us down, some of them with gold dust on their arms or in their hair. I scowled at a certain smirking Latino.

“We weren’t making out!” Will let out. “I was laughing at him ‘cause he fell out of the car, then I-”

Jason held up a hand. “Just get in the car.”

I noticed Hazel had an evil glint in her eyes, which meant she was either going to try to get revenge on me and fail terribly, or she was going to end me.

I really hoped it was the first one.

Everyone got in the car before me. To avoid Will, I got in on the other side of the car. Everyone else was already in their seats, some of them with a smug look on their face. I shared a worried face with Will. What were they planning?

I tried to squeeze inbetween the door and Hazel, but suddenly, Hazel pushed me to the other side of the car. I was in Will’s lap again. Suddenly, the car started and I felt the restraints keeping me in place. The others in the car were laughing while Will and I blushed for the millionth time that day.

“HAZEL LEVESQUE I WILL PERSONALLY MURDER YOU!”

I forgot how terrible sisters could be.

Will’s POV

I hate these people.

Issue #18 - Why should you watch Moonlight?

The color black is often associated with bad things or decisions, and dark moments in our life. And this word association confounds me as to why it has to bleed into so many different spheres of our society--or maybe it’s vice-versa, the image of those who created the concept and the concept itself shaped how society perceives the color in the spectrum of our societal organization.

It wouldn’t be a better time now to start questioning this and other concepts, especially when people of color across the globe try once again to have their voices heard, their pleas answered. It has been a never-ending battle for these voices. I could never understand the lengths needed to make a difference for them, and I say them because, even having suffered prejudice in different moments of my life, for different reasons that don’t even matter right now, the basic case of existence for these people is already enough to warrant social isolation, political struggle, and public shame.

The past has never been kind to them, and the present isn’t far from what the past was, which is why it is so important to fight now for a better future. And in this three-act drama full of pain and hope, we find our next recommendation.

Chiron Harris, or just Little, is born to a life of poverty in the outskirts of the world. For someone that lives far away from America, it almost feels cliche when the setting is first presented, but perhaps it only is because it became a staple of where people of color reside, always distant from the ‘normal’ world, and this dichotomy is evidenced in Chiron’s path to school.

He’s a kid born in a complicated family, adopted by someone else in life, a man that becomes a point of reference early on for Chiron, indisputably shaping his vision of manhood, and someone who accepts him for who he is. Chiron is bullied by his peers, and when a kid he already shows signs of knowing who he is inside but also knowing that a part of him perhaps might have to be hidden from the rest of the world.

As he grows, Chiron becomes the typical teenager that tries to hold his family together, by the poor remnants of a life he’s had. The male figure in his life is now absent, as it happens in many black communities when the men never reach their old age because the world don’t let them. I can’t attest to the reality of America, but I can talk about other realities that are too close to what we see there, when they shouldn’t be. People of color are more often than not subject to worse conditions of living, working, and social protection. Even when they are victims, they become targets of either the police or the prejudiced society that surrounds them, or at least, a society that’s free to scream louder than they dare to.

And this instills the idea of black masculinity in kids, which a lot of the time is simply misrepresented as thug culture. They grow up to become strong, otherwise, they cannot survive in that world. And they grow up to become bastions of hope for the people around them, if only to cling onto the idea that they’ll protect those they love, much like Juan did when Chiron was a kid, and how he’s trying to do now.

His necessity for proving himself comes to a head in school one day, when after a casual meeting with the kid he’s developing feelings for, Kevin, Chiron is singled out and beaten, yet in the end, the latent rage inside of him explodes as he takes it out on the culprit of his problems, and he goes to a juvenile detention center, a fate shared by many of his peers.

As an adult, dealing with drugs to fulfill the role of man he grew up to accept, now Chiron goes by the name “Black”. In this last part of the story, he looks to make amends with his mother, who up to this point had never been a positive influence in his life, and it becomes clear that a dysfunctional family in a destructive world, such as this that the black people live in, becomes a burden passed onto the kids and shapes the way they’ll live their lives.

But Chiron even having made a life for himself, he can never forget Kevin, and their relationship finds a way to rekindle when they meet again. With their feelings laid on the table, it is clear that things never ended for them. And when love is all you have, it’s hard to part ways from someone that made such a difference in your life.

However, Chiron had different loves in life. At first the love of a father, then the love of a friend, and now the love of a man, to offset all of those other kinds of love he never had the chance to have. It impacted him in such a way that his vulnerabilities show even when he’s the figure of a strong, black man.

In the end, he’s still a boy, and his mind goes far away into a past he can only remember, to find out the true meaning of the color of his skin, the true meaning of him as a person, while in the arms of someone that brings meaning to what he so achingly wants.

In the words that echo at the end of the movie, we can see that there are inherent differences between the person that I am, to the person Chiron, and any other black boy is. It can’t be a story just about romance or the love between two men, because it will always be about more than that. It will always be a call to justice for those who never knew what it is. Who grew up apart from the rest, or just someone who never knew which society I’m even talking about.

And I can never pretend to know what the black boys feel, be it under the sun or the moonlight. I can only glimpse through their eyes in moments like this. And still be sure that I’ll be watching from far away, protected by the veil of my own existence.

A veil that never threatens my own life.

Moonlight is a must-watch.

The name Iason means Healer do you think there is a meaning behind it or was just a random pick from Rieko Yoshihara?

Thank you so much for the question Anon. I love ranting speculatively about this kind of questions!

I do think there are several reasons why Yoshihara-sensei chose the name “Iason”, still I’m pretty sure that they have little to do with literal, physical healing. Iason is definitely more apt at, and keen on, breaking people rather than healing them. It should also be noted that the name Ιάσων, if derived from the verb ἰάομαι, could also mean (figuratively): to remedy, repair, make whole (or redeem if we take into account Biblical usage). Which is, in my opinion, much more significant to the role Iason ends up playing in the novels.There also is another meaning of ἰάομαι that is: strong, powerful. Thus Iason could be named so because he is objectively very powerful, but this is a very immediate interpretation, that leaves very little room for speculation.

Truth to be told the mythical Ιάσων (whom I will refer to as Jason for clarity) has not much to do with the medical act of healing either, his main “healing power” is about bringing the golden fleece back to Greece and thus grant a proper “burial” to Phrixus and break the curse plaguing Pelias and the city of Iolcus rather than any medical healing. Of course: the golden fleece has incredible healing abilities, but in my opinion, that is not the crux of the myth. The myth is about a purification rite, thus Jason can be perceived as a shaman of sorts leading the rite and, in that optic, his figure was used as a symbol by alchemists, but I will say more about that later in this rant.

A good way to begin this analysis is by listing the more immediate parallels between the mythical Jason and Iason.

Both Iason and Jason are blond, beautiful and the leader of a group of exceptional individuals at the top of their society which they manage to control and lead up to a certain point

Both are exceptional individuals destined for greatness, and both want power for themselves.

Both can be incredibly charming (Iason is deviously so, and Jason, seduction of Medea aside, manages to talk Aeëtes down from his paroxysm of ire and convince the king to grant him the possibility to try and earn the golden fleece, albeit through impossible feats only thanks to his polite conersation)

Both spend some time in disguise (Jason is recognised by Pelias only because he is “the man with one sandal”, and in the novels we see that Iason, when outside of Eos or Riki’s apartment in Apatia, almost always changes the colour of his hair and wears a visor not to be recognised).

Depending on the version of the myth you take into consideration both can be seen as deeply emotionally immature and struggling to form and handle interpersonal relationship because they never were part of a familial unit (Jason is smuggled away as an infant by his mother to be saved from death and raised by Chiron, while Iason is an artificial being who was taught to look down on humanity).

Both manipulate people, and both can be ruthless (Jason, among other things, leaves Heracles behind despite his companions’ protests and abandons Medea, while Iason is pretty much the definition of ruthless).

The might and value of both characters is symbolised by a golden fleece (Iason’s hair and Chrysomallus’ skin).

Both die ignored by their society (Tanagura in the novels is very careful about not saying a single word about the destruction of Dana Bahn and Raoul makes sure to keep Iason’s name out of the whole mess) and in a way that is as pathetic as it is dramatic (Jason is crushed as an old man by the mast of his rotting ship Argo as he is trying to relieve old lost glories, and Iason looses his legs and dies in a rotting old ruin by the action of someone who he saw as infinitely below himself).

Both have the favour of a god-like being that they later loose through their actions (Jupiter for Iason and Hera for Jason, here we start to see an interesting pattern).

And, most importantly, the fate of both is defined by one act of kindness and several horrific ones (even though Jason is usually framed by the narrative as an accomplice in them rather than the main perpetrator).

In the last two similarities, in my opinion, we see a beautiful subversion of the myth and the reason why Jason’s and Iason’s two “acts of healing” are so dramatically different and similar at the same time.Because I do think that both characters are linked to one “healing”, still the object of each healing, its methods, and the reasons behind it are very different. In my opinion is pretty apparent that Yoshihara-sensei took at least some inspiration from the Greco-Roman world while writing Ai no Kusabi. From the title of one novel (Petere, a Latin verb that means “to ask”) to the name of Lambda 300 (Jupiter, like the latin name of Zeus),Apatia, Eos, Kirie, and Tanagura itself (that might be inspired by the old Tanagra), to the whole issue with slavery, oligarchy, and the treatment of strangers. So it makes sense that she would choose the name of the deuteragonist from Greco-Roman tradition too, and with good reasons.

Jason’s one act of kindness, that wins him the favours of Hera, is to help an old lady cross one stream by carrying her. That is how he looses one sandal before entering the usurper’s court and is recognised. Still, unbeknownst to Jason, the old lady is not an old lady at all, but the goddess Hera in disguise who, impressed by the youth’s act of piety that reflects the values she embodies (respect for the family and traditions), decides to favour him from that moment onward, granting him a place in society through her influence.On the other hand Iason’s one act of kindness proves to be his undoing. By choosing to save Guy and sacrifice himself to save Riki Iason is abandoning everything that grants him power and life. He is knowingly leaving behind all the values and precepts he followed for his whole existence. By that action Iason is loosing the last dreg of Jupiter’s favour he still held by rejecting its dictated laws to follow his (new and still very shaky) “ethics”. In that moment he explicitly acknowledges not only Riki’s importance to him, but Riki’s dignity and pride, going as far as endangering himself to protect them. That action, though, is depriving the system and Jupiter of an important instrument, thus it becomes a senseless waste of resources for it, and (if we leave behind all of our ethics and judge that act of kindness purely from Jupiter’s point of view) Iason’s actions in Dana Bahn are actually detrimental for the order and stability of his society. Which could lead to another interesting addendum about how Amoi’s code of morals is twisted to the point that good becomes evil and evil becomes good, but that is a whole other issue that here I do not have space to explore properly.

Here lies the first subversion. Jason’s act of kindness starts his story, it is the first clue we are given of his value, in a way that act saves his life and allows him to pursue his destiny as a hero since it is Hera herself that puts in his mind the idea to suggest Pelias to send him on the quest for the golden fleece.Meanwhile Iason’s act of kindness is the one that closes his story, that leads him to his death and that would, if known, irreparably damage his reputation in the eyes of his society. Iason’s act of kindness makes him loose the “golden fleece”.Thus, while Jason’s act of kindness is what makes him, Iason’s act of kindness is the one that breaks him. Not just that, but while Jason helps the old lady without thinking too much about it, because that course of action is the one that he was raised to perceive as “right, Iason is quite clearly torn about what to do, his act of kindness would have costed him much even if he had not died as a consequence of it. I think the old anime is much better than the books in showing that. Iason sees Riki’s plea to save Guy as the ultimate proof that he has failed in the one thing that (for worse or worse, there isn’t much better in Amoi if we do not consider Norris’ love for his geezer XD) he truly cared for. There is nothing spontaneous in Iason’s actions there.

This is no serene evil cyborg acting spontaneously. He is hurting.Not to mention: this is the most emotional vulnerability we see Iason show in front of anyone ever, let alone Riki whom he purposefully tries to keep guessing about the “true value” he sees in him for fear of loosing control. So, while Jason is torn about his evil deeds and acts kindly without thinking, for Iason the opposite is true.

Jason ends up redeeming a kingdom that he shall never rule because of his evil deeds, he gains the fleece but immediately looses his rights to glory because of the way he escapes Pelias’plan to kill him. In contrast Iason rules a kingdom from the beginning (albeit under Jupiter) precisely because of his evil deeds while his redemption, his act of healing, is private, personal. That has also to do with the fact Amoi is an unescapable dystopia though.Both Iason’s and Jason’s stories are a diminuendo, two downward spirals, but, while Jason is able to redeem his people but not himself, Iason is only able to redeem himself in the end, damaging his society, and his one good action is a suffered one, something he has to force himself to do.

Which leads us directly to what Iason hasn’t to force himself to do, namely: being a horrible person (GlaDOS wasn’t even testing for that! XD).Iason, from the beginning of the novels almost all through them, has no qualms about using and abusing people, which is why Katze is so surprised by the way Riki has managed to change him into someone able to see the reason why Judd Kuger might still love his son despite the fact that Manon is only a nuisance. Here lies the second subversion. In all the versions of Jason’s myth I know of Jason is always shown to have several qualms about Medea’s ruthless plans. Jason is not vicious by nature, Iason, even at his best, is a sadist.

Both Jason and Iason are controlled by forces higher than them that they cannot escape or defy (it is very telling how Iason has to make a whole convoluted plan just to be able to leave for Dana Bahn without alerting his peers and Jupiter), but while Iason is the one moving the pieces on the chessboard, Jason is much more dependant on others. To use a chess metaphor: Jason is the king, Iason is the queen. Jason might be the semi-shamanic guide that leads his peers toward the golden fleece, still most of the heroic acts and plans along the way are made by others. Jason depends on Medea for getting the fleece, escaping Colchis, and surviving Pelias. Jason depends on Orpheus (hi there Orphe Zavi), on Heracles, on all his companions to be frank, for most of his adventures. The one moment Jason is truly alone and desperate is when he dies, having lost all those that might have loved him.On the other hand Iason is incredibly self reliant, he has pawns and a grand total of one friend, but he plays his cards close to the chest; he is very good at working with and in a group, still his plans are his own, he relies on his own strength even when he should not do so. Even when his fellow Blondies have lost respect for him and would gladly trod on his carcass he can still force them to grant him permission to move Riki to Apatia. During his life Iason is almost a monad, despite the wealth of people that would gladly offer him company, still, in the moment when he dies, he is not alone. Iason dies during a deep bonding moment, I think as happy as he ever was, and with the one person he, in his scary twisted and dangerously obsessive way, loved, by his side. Not just that, but Riki comes back of his own accord when he could have walked away free, proving that there was something more than hate and fear that he felt towards Iason.Jason dies desperate trying to relive old glories and leave in search of something, what he doesn’t know himself, while Iason dies happy after having left all of his glory behind (along with a couple of legs), but having gained the one thing he truly wanted. Which could be interpreted as creepy total control, but I do not think it was for several reasons, authorial intent first and foremost.

Another element worth mentioning, in my opinion, is the rite of purification that allows the hero back into society. Jason and Medea go through one right after having escaped the Colchis. In most version of the myth the Argonauts leave in secret since Aeëtes, the king that held the golden fleece and father to Medea, went back on his word once Jason overcame the impossible proves he had set (thanks to Medea) and threatened to kill all the Argonauts. So Jason and Medea stole the fleece and, in the most common version of the myth, Medea also kidnapped her young half-brother. This way, when Aeëtes pursued them, she cut the boy to pieces and threw the pieces overboard, forcing her father to stop and recover the remains of his son in order to give him a proper burial. This act saved the mission, yet was so horribly inconceivable for the Greek sensibilities to force both Jason and Medea to seek purification in Circe’s domain. Circe, Medea’s aunt, purified them allowing the couple to travel back in Greece and re-join the “civilised society”. Still, ultimately, despite Jason’s and Medea’s efforts, they were unable to do so. Partially because of the fact that they committed another awful crime to enter the city of Iolcus, convincing the daughters of Pelias to cut their father to pieces in the hope of rejuvenating him. Thus, what should have been Jason’s triumph turns into him relinquishing all rights on the crown or the fleece and escaping like a disgraced exile with his wife.

This, in my opinion, can be compared with Iason’s attempt at re-normalising the situation after Riki’s year and a half of freedom. Iason tries quite desperately to make Riki fit in his old life, in the Amoian system, going as far as submitting to almost all of Orphe’s rules , but there he ultimately fails, because not only Riki is not a person, or a pet, that can live in Eos, but also because Riki’s presence and influence has changed him to the point of making him unfit for his society. He cannot accept to show Riki, he fights against the house arrest Orphe decrees, he actually cares about Riki’s mental wellbeing (up to a certain point and in his twisted way that doesn’t stop him from abusing Riki, but he does). Besides, soon enough, Riki becomes involved in another crime in Eos, like Jason and Medea did in Corinth. So Iason’s attempt at “cleaning his name” in the eyes of his society fails as much as Jason’s and Medea’s does.

This leads us to two interesting observations.

The first is wether we can read the Jason/Iason parallelism in the light of Seneca’s interpretation of the mythical Jason.Seneca wrote a tragedy about Jason and Medea called “Medea” in which he explored the classical theme of “civilised hero is dragged down by a barbarian woman” under the light of Stoicism. The tragedy is set, like all of the tragedies by the same name, after the exile of Medea and Jason from Iolcus, when they are living in Corinth. There the king offers his daughter in marriage to Jason and the hero, for reasons that vary from tragedy to tragedy, accepts the offer, abandoning his wife Medea to yet another exile and planning to separate her from their two children. As a result Medea, chooses to make him pay and sends his soon to be new wife a dress that burns her alive before killing the children she had with Jason and fleeing Corinth. In Seneca’s tragedy Jason becomes the mouthpiece of stoicism and is a positive character (which is why I much prefer Eurypides’ Medea, where he is a fool). He is forced into the new marriage by political reasons and acts as he does because the wise man endures stoically the hardships that life throws in his path, choosing based on intellect rather than passions, while his wife is the villain, choosing to destroy everything when life denies her what she wants rather than trying to make the best out of it. So there is this dichotomy of passions and rationality.This theme of passions versus reason is present in the Ai no Kusabi novels too, still there the role of Iason is similar yet completely different. Like Seneca’s Jason Iason is a creature of cold rationality at first, faced with a being of irrational passions. Both this Jason and Iason’s attempt at controlling that irrationality ultimately fails, yet they fail in completely different ways. Seneca’s Jason is not conflicted as Iason is. He knows his path, but doesn’t allow himself to suffer too much because of its cruelty, while Iason’s development is exactly about starting to feel something. His path is the exact opposite of the stoic hero’s one, he must learn how to feel, how to let go of the odd, twisted, form of stoicism that his nature and environment imposes upon him. Both Seneca’s Jason and Iason must overcome their nature, but in opposite directions. Jason’s act of healing is to overcome passions and his suffering, while Iason’s act of healing is about accepting, acknowledging that he has a human side able to suffer.

This ties back into the elephant in the room that constitutes the second interesting observation.

Jason’s myth is heavily dpendant on Medea. Is there a Medea in Ank? and, if there is one, who is our dystopian Medea? The most immediate answer would be to say that Medea is Riki. After all both are strangers in a strange place, both are despised for what they are, considered barbarian, savages, both are ruthless and cruel, both are determined, both follow their feelings far more than any logic, both bring forth the demise of Jason/Iason. Still I think that is a false parallelism. Riki is not Medea. Medea is powerful, divine, far more ruthless than Riki ever was, her power is even superior to Jason’s and while she and Riki might fill somehow similar narrative roles, their characters are completely different. Medea is far more divine than Jason, Riki is incredibly human in his virtues and flaws. Riki is not stupid, not by a long shot, still his impulsiveness and ignorance end up thwarting his plans, even the best laid ones, while Medea’s might and knowledge is so great that even her suicidal plan ends with her leaving in triumph on the sun’s chariot. Her very name derives from μῆδος, that means “cunning”. Riki is smart, but he has no chance of being cunning, not faced with a “monster of cunning” like Iason.My pet theory is that Iason is both Jason and Medea. Let’s analyse the possibility: Jason, in his interpretation as the “civilised hero”, the stoic, the “guide”, is Iason’s at the beginning, the dominant side of his personality, what he was moulded into being. All of his actions are carefully planned, he is more than able to use and then throw people away to fit a “greater good”, his master plan. Jason can be, in some interpretations of the myth, seen as some kind of fool manipulated by greater forces and, in some ways Iason is too and, at the beginning, is actually clueless about it, since he is so “indoctrinated” by the system as he can be. To the point that he cannot see how the system could harm him too, since he never felt any desire to go against it in a significant way. Even as he does, to keep Katze alive, he is still operating inside of a strict amoian logic. Keeping Katze alive is a means to an end. Curiosity indeed plays a part, but Iason’s ultimate goal is to benefit his own, and thus Jupiter’s power.

Now let’s analyse Jason’s evil act, the one that looses him Hera’s favour. That act is abandoning Medea, breaking his family to save himself and his legacy in the “civilised” world. This is the complete opposite of what Iason does in the end of AnK. Iason there chooses his obsession for Riki over his own good, over what is socially acceptable. This way Iason makes Medea’s choice rather than Iason’s. To save Jason, to have him succeed, Medea betrays her family and country, so does Iason.Not just that, but Iason’s obsessive, possessive, twisted, brand of love for Riki very closely resembles what Medea feels for Jason. To have him she is willing to use all of her powers, to defy the most sacred laws and, when he wants to abandon her she is willing to destroy him, even if it hurts her in the deepest most intimate way (the killing of her own children). Still there we see a fundamental difference. By the end of book 6, after the one and only time Iason is forced to show Riki at a Bacchanalia, Iason has a very similar, horribly immature, reaction. He takes his frustration with the situation out on Riki, hurting him in quite an awful way. The abusive mechanism is the same “since I have sacrificed so much for you, if I cannot have you as I want, I’d rather destroy you”. Still Iason, unlike Medea, does not go through with it. Which doesn’t make his actions any less horrible, mind you, but shows a fundamental difference and highlights what, in my opinion, is Iason’s private “act of healing” that only comes as he dies: managing to make his Medea and his Jason coexist. Iason’s redemption is to accept his nature as part-human and act accordingly, granting the object of his twisted brand of “love” a choice, to recognise that a feeling, when not mutual, cannot be enforced and, through this, reconcile his rational and his instinctive side. And, this way, reconciling his rational and his irrational sides.

Now, as promised at the beginning, I will explore a bit the “alchemical” symbolic interpretations of Jason.In Rome there is a famous landmark, the “Porta Alchemica”, (alchemical door), which references Jason in two of its incisions and in both cases the meaning given to him and his name was not the one of “healer”, but the one of “the discoverer”. This is aligned with the theories and interpretations of the myth that see the Argonauts voyage as a mythical recounting of the first commercial travels of Greek merchants towards unknown riches and knowledges. The golden fleece there is a symbol of redemption and knowledge rather than healing per se. Its gold is the alchemic gold, the philosopher’s stone able to turn “vile metals” into gold, heal every ailment, and grant eternal life. What I like about Ai no Kusabi is how that search is turned on its head. Iason starts the story by having a high-tech version of the philosopher’s stone/golden fleece. He is immortal, eternally young, has incredible power, he knows more than any other being, yet precisely because of that he is blind to everything he does not understand, he is prejudiced to think that everything “below” himself is unworthy. He frequently refers to Riki as a “gem in the rough”, but ultimately, his path leads him to the conclusion that the “rough” is exactly what makes Riki so appealing to him. He never ceases to want to dominate Riki, that is his nature, still he doesn’t want to “break him” anymore. Only by loosing his “golden fleece” Iason is able to recognise what he ultimately is and wants, and thanks to this realisation, redeem himself and gain one thing of true value.Iason, at the beginning, doesn’t truly care for anything because his own golden fleece blinds him. Both Riki and Iason loose the people they were before meeting each other and, through the books, search for a new identity, a rebirth (another theme that appears again and again in Jason’s and Medea’s tale). Pelias being tricked into thinking he can be rejuvenated, reborn, and then killed by Medea could be accosted to Kirie’s fate. A false rebirth that only means death. In fact Kirie’s name itself means “Lord”, like Pelias is the lord of Iolcus.

The most meaningful inscription, in the optic of the reconciliation of Jason’s and Medea’s figures, is the one where it was written “Passing by opening the door of the villa, Iason obtained the rich fleece of Medea”. In that context one could argue that Iason’s travel “through the door” symbolises a form of acceptance of Medea’s rules and values, and that true knowledge and redemption from human limitations can only be achieved when rationality and passion are both taken into account and given their own space in a human’s life. In that inscription the treasure, the fleece is Medea’s.

In conclusion: yes, I do think the meaning of Ιάσων is important to the plot of Ai no Kusabi, and I also think that there are several interesting parallelisms that could be made between the characters of the myth in some of its interpretations and Iason.Still I also think that the meaning of “healer”, should not be taken literally, but interpreted in the context to signify a sort of “spiritual healing”, a conciliation between opposite positions and pulls. As I said in previous posts I think that Elites, Blondies in particular, can be seen as “failed projects” since they are supposed to serve as a bridge between men and machine, yet they are taught to look down on mankind rather than try to understand the humanity in them and “embrace it”. This way they are made ultimately ineffective at presenting the human position before Jupiter and Iason’s only “healing” act comes at the end of the novels and is about accepting his “human” side and acting upon it not for evil but, once in his life, for good. Thus “healing” that flaw of his whole specie. Besides, in such an optic, death, rather than the eternal life granted by the fleece, becomes the one way to freedom from Amoi’s society, the great equaliser.

Are many of these speculations of mine pretty wild? Absolutely. After all the cultural context Yoshihara-sensei lives in is very different from the one I am speaking from, and there are issues of Japanese society explored in the books that I only tangentially know and which can be appreciated and spoken of far better by people who are part of, or know well, Japanese society.Still I think that Yoshihara-sensei did a kind of “syncretic effort”, to present a far-future culture that stemmed from many different roots (the Vila of slavic folklore are mentioned and subtly likened to the Elites, the reliefs on Midas’ gates are described as very similar to Indian reliefs, an angel is the symbol of the Guardians, one of Riki’s nicknames is Vajira and so on), thus I think that some of the observations I made might have indeed occurred to her while choosing the name for Iason.

Happiest of Moonday to All and what a moon day it’s set to be, as she comes into a plethora of harmonious aspects to the streams of energy being sent from the bodies further out, Saturn, Lilith, Ceres and Chiron, powerful sharing of their celestial songs.

Ringing our receiver, the moon like the bell that she is for all to feel the reverberations.

Unconscious programming and splitting will show up with a power surge of emotions, this incredible lightness available will feel heavy, with weighted emotions, a good sign to let those lost know they are stood behind the looking glass, and we have to stand in front, to see the reflection before we even get to see through the looking glass….

Positioning is essential

A highly feminine day for us to soften everything down, breathe, smile and love deeply everything that enters the field, as the gift it is. Even if it means saying no thank you…. The choice to make things personal, is exactly that, a choice…truth is everything is simply a frequency and it either can unify in harmony or it can’t, resolution and resolving is showing to those “hell bent” on fixing out there through the old Piscean sticky plaster technique, Unhealed Healer ways to be highly draining, and is rapidly realising the lack of life force, to continue highlights the ignorance and avoidance held in these unconscious beliefs and ways.

It sounds tough, it will look tough as many who you have loved as guides spin into exhaustion.

Light expands us with energy, it’s constant, there is no overwhelm, sickness, exhaustion because all is aligned. When we are being starved of our light force then we have a huge block, within the mind…..this can be rectified so simply, once the attachment to the old is allowed to leave.

Then the force begins to flow….for the first time, real time, not make believe anymore and the ability to rejuvenate and hold constant “states” all states becomes simple.

It is not a belief, we are LIVING and without one shred of avoidance, an impossible distortion when you exist in complete acceptance.

The Moon does make a square, which will feed these lower frequencies with the aggravation required to push many through the outer limits, which in turn immediately will open the channel to take each within. The moon is making square to Mercury who is on the final degree of Aquarius, done talking, done trying, it’s completed, frequ1ncy will dictate the spectrum of abrupt to smooth, all is dependent on the ability to see the bigger picture.

Mars sextiles Juno, which to those who play out in the reality and are reactive will no doubt be having something or someone catch their eye, but for those who are within, moving and adjusting the reality through frequ1ncy will no doubt find more depth inside and the love and connection powers up for those who choose to exist within their hearts.

It is most likely to feel your masculine energy want to push, to order, to state, to do, but today the energy dictates something different.

It’s a day to listen to the guidance within, the moon and mercury are trying to highlight where there is completion, where more needs to be noticed, pay attention and follow the guidance. Mars and Juno want to open up, not out there, but within, to give more, to love more, to spark those fires of passion to create something of significance, of course it goes without saying that relationships are formed with this energy but we also know they are formed on our core frequency, and let me tell you, one thing I am so in love with is continuing to raise my own frequency, because the relationships I now attract are so Divinely perfect, so supportive, so loving and so incredibly authentic.

If we are to play in a mirrored world then let’s a become responsible and create the most magical reflections.

This process becomes SOULy about the individual until the unification begins within, again, a reflection and a frequency match, we unify in light when align to light.

The moon passing Saturn, sets the karmic tone after we passed Jupiter, Pluto and opened the unified code of 02022020 the matriarchal frequency, not to be mistaken for feminine rule, it is balance and harmony, it is the unification of the masculine and feminine, fully in partnership, listening and acting accordingly.

Just miles away from my home the field was shook or set with a tone of destruction, fear is currently rising to be distinguished, we hold all those in love. The UK breaks it’s karmic chains and the reaction or perceived chaos must rise to neutralise, hold space angels and fully experience the Divine Order of how energy works, liking it or not is just part of the attachment, allow it to pass freely as the storms within your own reality have.

It is just a pattern

And as the walkers of light that we are, we hold that most highest, expanded awareness, we hold our field, the tone, we paint the colours of our picture and we hold the future vision, we have the eye to see, the heart to feel and we fully accept the distortions must be seen, felt to be dealt with, aligned in order for us to heal.

My name’s Annabeth Chase. I’m 18 years old, 5′9′’ and 135 pounds. Although, I feel the need to point out that this entire survey is completely ridiculous in the first place and I don’t know why I’m being made to do it. I already have a boyfriend?

Are you looking for a guy, a girl, or don’t you care?

I don’t care... because I’m already in a relationship. Again, why I’m having to do this is not making sense to me. But, technically speaking, if I were filling this out as someone who isn’t in a two year strong relationship, I’d say a guy.

Five things that you find most interesting about yourself, and why:

Obviously, the first thing is going to be the fact that I’m a halfblood. I know this camp is full of them, but there’s not a lot of people out in the world who can say their mom’s a Greek goddess. And that’s pretty awesome.

My mortal side of the family is descended from Swedish royalty. It’s definitely had its perks over the years. My dad, for example, had enough to move my family out to California on a whim for his book and even bought a Sopwith Camel. None of which would’ve been possible if it weren’t for my heritage. Granted, it’s also caused some problems for my cousin, but... that’s a whole other story.

My weapon. I carry a knife, unlike most of the other campers here that like to fight with arrows and swords--things that let them attack their enemy from a distance. But my knife was a gift from when I was very young, and it just means a lot to me. It’s been through a lot, and I can’t imagine ever parting with it.

Even though I don’t have an actual degree--yet--I’ve been commissioned and am working on redesigning Olympus. It got destroyed about two and a half years ago, and I was the one they picked to redesign it. If that just doesn’t sound super impressive, then I don’t know what else would.

I’ve broken ancient laws before. There’s this whole thing about only letting two people go with you on a quest. If you don’t go off in a group of three, then the extra person--or people--have a tendency to not come back. I kind of thought that was a dumb law and so, I ended up with more than two people going with me. By the time it was over, there were five of us. And we all came back alive. Well, there were two weeks where we thought Percy had died, but he didn’t. So, it doesn’t count.

The main thing you want in a partner, and why:

I want a best friend. I want someone who can keep me grounded, and listen to me even when I’m being ridiculous. Someone who knows how to make me laugh, and knows how to make me irritated, and knows how to calm me down. Someone who has seen both the best and worst sides of me and loves me anyway. Who will do stupid things that’ll make me smile and roll my eyes. Who will say stupidly cheesy things, even though they know it doesn’t work on me. I want someone who will support me, no matter what and wants to go along for whatever dangerous and crazy ride we go on. I want all these things... because I have all these things. I know how nice it is to be in a healthy relationship.

What you really think of your ex:

That really awkward moment when you don’t have an ex.

Favorite song (ever or at the moment):

My favorite song of all time is definitely “Here Comes the Sun,” by the Beatles. There was a time, before my step mom, before I knew what a half blood was, when my dad still lived in Boston with my Aunt Natalie, and he used to sing it to me when we’d be walking through the Commons. It was cool, but it didn’t last long.

My favorite song at the moment is “Wait for It” from the Hamilton soundtrack. It’s just a really good song.

When you look in the mirror what’s the first thing you think:

“Can I get away with not brushing my hair again today?”

If you could hook up with one person:

The dutiful girlfriend in me knows that I should say Percy Jackson.

Do you have feelings for someone (honest truth or I’ll find out myself, your choice. the latter is much worse though):

This time, I can actually say Percy Jackson and mean it. I like him a lot, it’s kind of gross.

Describe your typical weekend:

Is there ever such a thing as a typical weekend for a demigod? I mean, I get whatever homework done that I can. I’m finally done playing catch up, which I’m so excited about. There’s some form of training thrown in there, whether it’s going to the gym, going jogging at a park, coming up to camp to train. I try to get in a visit to Olympus when I can to see how everything’s progressing as far as the construction and planning goes, but that’s not every weekend. Most weekends, I try to go over to Percy’s or we try to find some way to hang out. Normally, I go over there so we can try to get through our homework together. The rest of the weekend is spent drawing up plans for new projects, calling my dad, or hanging out with my friends.

Describe the typical person you fall for:

This is just full of awkward moments for me. Especially since I can’t describe my boyfriend. He’s proven to be the exception.

The typical guy I fall for is blond, a little on the dangerous side, kind of a bad boy, and he knows what he wants in life.

Your view of being a halfblood:

I used to think it was really cool, and I still think it’s one of the most interesting things about me. As evident by one of my previous answers. But, it’s so tiring, too. The last time I had a normal summer, I was eleven years old. And it can be kind of an inconvenience. Like, Hold on, Mrs. Turner, I have to excuse myself to go and fight this monster that’s tracked me down and is waiting for me out in the hall. I’ll be back to finish my test as soon as I can. But, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Being a halfblood is who I am, and it’s made me into the person I am today. It’s brought people into my life that I never would have met otherwise, and it’s definitely made for some cool adventures. I just wish the adventures could stop now.

What you think about your godly parent:

The very first thing you learn about Athena when you’re claimed: she’s the absolute best Olympian ever. And you better not say otherwise. So, she’s the best Olympian ever.

I’m not just saying that though. I think my mom’s really cool, and she’s been able to accomplish so much. She and I haven’t always seen eye to eye on things, but that’s understandable. When she makes up her mind about something, it’s kind of hard to change it. She’s so strong and I do strive to be a lot like her. There are definitely worse Olympians that could have been my parent, and I’m glad that she’s my mom.

How do you like the camp (Chiron made us include this one)?

I love camp. It’s truly my home. It gave me a place to belong when my mortal family decided it didn’t want me anymore. It gave me a family, a safe haven, and a place to call my own. I always look forward to coming back here.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Only one thing? I guess... I’d try to be more open.
