The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie Review

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley is a 386 YA Historical Fiction. It’s the first book in the Flavia de Luce series, which is 10 books long.

It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

I rate this book 3/5 stars.

It’s been an entire month since I actually read this book and to be honest it didn’t stick with me in any way. I’ve forgotten all of what happened within this book and only remember what I’ve written down in my notes while reading this, so here we go:

The main character is really unbelievable, she’s only 11 years old but acts way older. With the amount of knowledge she soaks up in a matter of moments she instantly sounds more like a 15-18 year old. 45-50% through the book there is a scene where the dad pretends to be Asian man for a magic trick and it feels real racist because the audiobook puts on an stereotypical accent. It’s set in the 1950′s, so I kinda understand why they did that, but still. It made me feel uncomfortable.

I noted that the reveal was rather interesting and that it was a plus, but I can’t even remember what the reveal was, so I’m trusting past me on this one.

"Confessions of a Murder Suspect" is a young adult novel written by two authors, both who normally collab together to write adult mysteries.

In that regard, Tandy's story is told in a way that makes me feel stupid. Not like I'm trying to put the pieces together, but that I am a stupid person. Which, I can be (I am human) but young adults and even middle grade readers are not stupid. Yeah they're learning who they are and trying to get ahold of life, but making stupid choices doesn't mean they are stupid.

Tandy talks like she is the smartest person on the planet. Like she is an adult with years of detective work under her belt. None of the adults in the novel are that great either as they are judgmental, unprofessional, or abusive on their own. From the cops, neighbors, and even her now dead parents, Tandy has no good role models. Even Samantha ends up being not amazing, but honestly I couldn't tell what role any of these adults truly had in Tandy's life. This is not just the fault of the adults themselves, but also of Tandy as a narrator. She spends to much time going back and forth between ideas. This doesn't add to the mystery or the drama. It just makes the novel feel like it is trying to do to much.

There is a little set up at the end of the novel for a continuation, but the novel also ends in a way that could allow Tandy's story to end.

The first Confessions novel left me with more questions than answers and I'm not sure if I care enough to even want answers to my questions.

Is the novel appropriate for middle grade readers?

I think it depends. It's a murder mystery, so there's that. There's talk of alcohol, underage drinking, cheating, and even vandalism. So do with that what you will.

I think that this could be fine for 8th graders or higher, but also I read stuff like this or worse when I was in middle school.
