Hi! Welcome to the fic that started up my writing again! This is my biggest project, so I hope you love it just as much as I do! It's a bit long winded, so I'll try to make it worth the read! Enjoy!

Summary: Magic was real, but it came at a price. So when two girls from Earth ended up in the one place they never thought they could reach, strange things began to happen. Good or bad? That's up to them to find out.

Part XI.

A/N: Good evening wonderful peeps. Hope you've had a good day. Guess who’s going to London Comic Con on Saturday to see The Sandman panel? Me! I am bouncing with excitement already. Hope you enjoy this next one.

The next fortnight sees you experience some of the finest sleep you have ever had.

With only dreams to shelter in, you remain asleep for long periods and average 8-9 hours a night.

And those dreams are divine. On foot, you explore windswept shorelines, craggy mountains and bustling markets. By bicycle you ride along coastal roads and quiet country lanes. You see sunrises and sunsets. Climb trees. Gaze at stars.

Your emotions are still frayed, of course. It is going to take longer than three weeks to get over a two year relationship but your health is much improved.

It is a relief to be able to live without a sleep deprivation induced brain fog. To keep up with conversations at work without putting in too much effort. To use the stove without the risk of setting something on fire.

But most importantly, you do not have jumpy anticipation during the run up to 10pm any longer. Sleep has returned to the sanctuary state that it had used to be. You look forward to falling into its embrace.

You hope that this will please Morpheus.

The King of Dreams persistently stays in the forefront of your mind. His image fills your day dreams.

You wonder what he gets up to in his quiet moments. You then wonder if Morpheus has quiet moments at all. From your knowledge of royalty, they aren't known for having much downtime. And since there will always be at least one person asleep during the 86,400 seconds of each day, you reason that he is probably even more stretched than any human monarch, past or present.

You also think about the kiss. If you are not careful, its memory triggers something inside you; a potent, physical yearning. Each time, you vehemently push it down and remind yourself of the reason why you exercised such restraint.

Propriety.

You have to do the right thing.

You know that with enough elapsed days, you will stop feeling so attracted to him. The simple passing of time will save you. It is a phenomenon you have always relied on to overcome every less than helpful want or feeling.

On the day that he is due to visit, you are nauseated by nerves.

Your last meeting had been so tumultuous, and you are unsure where you stand with him anymore.

When evening comes, you have to utilise all the tools you have to feel even remotely calm enough to get into bed; fresh sheets and pyjamas, herbal tea, lavender essential oil. You lay there, opening and shutting your eyes over and over. Desperately trying to tune into the rain sound track playing through your phone. Obsessively re-plumping and re-organising your pillows.

Eventually, the excessive combination works. Yet you do not remember it beginning. You only know you have succeeded because you start to dream.

You find yourself in the cottage again. The blankets and pillows are exactly where you left them.

You perch on the sofa and wait.

There’s a knock at the door.

You hop up and move quickly to open it.

The likeness of Morpheus that you have been recalling in your mind for fourteen days is suddenly revealed as fuzzy and faded. Nothing compared to looking upon him in person. You are pushing your attraction to him down hard while quelling your anxiety.

He says your name calmly and evenly but his eyes betray him. He is as on edge as you are.

"May I come in?" He asks.

"Of course."

You open the door further and beckon him inside.

Returning to the sofa, you draw your legs up and under you. He stands unmoving.

You try out a small smile. “So, what’s new? Any earthquakes?”

"You have remained stable. There have been no breaches."

“That’s great.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re okay?”

“I am.”

The phrase ‘blood from a stone’ pops into your head.

“I’ve been sleeping much better, although I’m sure you probably already know that.”

“I am aware, and it is gratifying to know that it is the case.”

“I’m not ready for nightmares yet, though.”

“I agree.”

His gaze shifts briefly to the door.

You save him from his discomfort. “I shouldn’t keep you.”

You stand and walk him to the threshold.

“I will return in another two weeks,” he says.

“Okay, thank you.”

With that he is gone and the dream is over.

You sigh as you come back into your bedroom, eyes fluttering open.

“Well, that was awkward,” you say out loud.

The next appointment comes with the same worries as last time. If possible, you are even more confused about things. You cannot tell if you are friends or simply a responsibility for him to manage.

But you enter with a positive outlook and when Morpheus knocks, you answer with a beaming grin.

"Am I right in thinking that you could just appear in here without needing to knock?"

There’s a pause. "You are right."

You nod and assume your position across the room.

Together, you go through the same formalities as before; wellbeing, any issues, how you are sleeping.

The conversation lasts a similar duration, however, you are not going to let it end just yet.

"How are Lucienne and Matthew?"

"Both are well. Would you like me to inform them that you asked after them?"

"Yes, please.”

You walk him to the door.

“Thank you for coming. I hope you have a good couple of weeks.”

“I wish the same for you also.”

Progress. You think, when you wake.

Your subsequent meet sees you emboldened. You decide to push a bit further this time.

"Anything kooky or unexpected happened in the past two weeks?"

He seems a little taken aback but indulges you nonetheless.

“As a matter of fact, yes. With the advent of spring, we have seen an influx of associated imagery in the Dreaming.”

He looks down, an expression on his face that conveys that he is trying to choose the correct words.

“There have been a lot of rabbits. Gigantic rabbits… Doing what rabbits do best.”

You laugh loudly. “You’re joking.”

His tiny smile lets you know that your persistence is paying off. “How I wish I were, Y/N.”

Another two weeks sees you feeling worse but in a constructive way.

In your raw state, you believe that a bit of time with Morpheus will be a soothing balm for you. He has exuded serenity since the moment he entered your life.

You feel it as soon as he steps into the cottage with you and it only intensifies when his beautiful eyes meet yours.

“Something has changed,” he states with concern. “You are sleeping less.”

“I’m trying to confront my demons.” You take a grounding breath. “It’s slow going and I'm only starting with the small ones but progress is progress.” You re-affirm the last bit for yourself, more than for him.

A high backed armchair appears, positioned opposite your seat. Morpheus sits and uses his most gentle tone

“Would you like to talk about it?”

“I would like to know what you’ve been up to, actually.”

He hesitates, dark brows furrowing, clearly alarmed about your deflection.

“Please,” you push.

“Very well.”

You pull a blanket over your legs and gaze at him as you wait for a sort of bedtime story.

“I have been creating new dreams and nightmares.”

The following time you wake in the cottage, things are different.

You have slipper socks on to heat your toes and a blanket already draped around your shoulders to keep you warm.

There are also new additions.

The candle is sea salt scented. There’s a speaker set on a sideboard. A small remote on the coffee table.

You reach for it. There's only one button.

You tentatively press it.

The opening bars of your favourite song start to play.

You sing along enthusiastically, swaying a little on the spot. Your blanket swishes like a wizard cloak as you move.

The track ends and you are smiling.

Until you notice Morpheus is watching you through the window.

“Oh shit!” You exclaim, blanket slipping down as you cover your mouth with your hands.

He lets himself in. Your cheeks are burning and you struggle to look him for more than a second at a time.

“I don’t want to know how long you have been standing there.”

“No, you probably don’t.” He smirks.

You go towards the sofa but stop when he asks you an unexpected question.

“Would you like to venture outside with me?”

“Do you have time for that?”

“I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t.”

“Then, yes, please. That would be lovely.”

You look down and suddenly find there are a pair of lace up boots on your feet.

“Impressive,” you compliment.

He holds the door open for you, wearing a faint smile.

You wonder if all is forgiven.

hours of the day ranked

1. 6pm 6pm is the best hour of every day because this is when you are eating dinner. sometimes it doesn't happen in this hour but when it does, this is why we are on earth. dinner. it's also good because you eat dinner then.

2. 7pm i love this hour because if you have eaten dinner already you have a good 4-5 hours of true free time. you can literally do whatever, spend time with friends, read, write, watch a movie, or do what god herself placed us on this earth to do which is rot in bed and look at phone.

3. 12pm yummy lunch time

4. 4am I'll fight all of you on this but 4am is here because of that sweet sweet rem. you know how good sleep feels at 4am? you kidding me? this is why i LIVE.

5. 12am there's just something special about midnight you know. it's just cool. if you're still awake the vibes are kinda crazy you know. if you're with friends then the vibes are even crazy er. i love it when it is midnight.

6. 3pm i haven't been in school for years (like millions of years), but there is no denying the power of 3pm. home time. it's also the peak time in the afternoon. lots of shenanigans to be had at 3pm you know

7. 5pm this is like like school ending but for adults although i don't have a job that ends at 5 i just kind of work whenever and it is so bad for my work life balance because i end up working at the worst times and don't give myself enough time to relax but if i had a normal job this would be the best time

8. 10pm sleepy vibes you know

9. 8pm i really like this time because i'm usually right into a movie or something or playing a game or rotting in bed usually rotting

10. 4pm it's interesting at this point we are starting to get to the hours i'm not too fond of. don't get me wrong i'm a fan of 4pm, but my brain just turns off around this time every day. i can't get anything done. it sucks. i'm not a morning person or an afternoon person or an evening person tbh.

11. 11pm hey that's a good placement

12. 5am such a risky hour. if you're getting good rem then it is the greatest hour in the world. but if you wake up at 5am and still want to have a little more sleep. god. kill me. it happened to me this morning and it has just ruined my day

13. 9pm it's kind of sad at 9pm because the night is coming to an end and it's like sad and stuff??

14. 1pm i ated all my lunch :(

15. 10am hey this is usually like a snack time so that is good. but you have a whole work day ahead of you and it's like ugh lame you know. if it is a day off though 10am can be pretty exciting. i'm usually rotting in bed around 10am

16. 2pm controversial maybe but this time isn't it. i want to go home you know i don't have three hours of work left in me.

17. 11am the most nothing hour ever created what even happens at 11am

18. 1am not for me

19. 2am like 1am but slightly worse

20. 3am like 2am but slightly worse

21. 8am of all of the morning hours, this one is the least offensive. you're usually eating breakfast or just commuting and listening to music so hey, it gets a pass i suppose. morning sux.

22. 7am the only good thing about 7am is your bed is so comfortable, but like why can't we take that comfort and move it to other parts of the day. i gotta get up at 7am, don't do that to me.

23. 6am kill me now it's so over

24. 9am imagine being henry time, inventor of time, and thinking you know what is a good idea? 9am? what a fool. i'm so upset this time should not exist. so sick and twisted.

i will absoluely take this baton, thank you for tagging @fairlylokai 🥰

1 ) do you make your bed? the truth is i tried for a while and i still do try occasionally but a majority of the time it ends up with me sleeping on top of a comforter because my brain cant put together the effort to pull it back and actually get in. im going to go with no (despite the state of my very made bed that i am currently sitting on at the time of this post)

2 ) what's your favourite number? two-way tie between 58 and 87. iykyk ;)

3 ) what is your job? im a software developer, its kinda a boring title but im getting good at it!

4 ) If you could go back to school would you? it really depends on the day you ask me this one. like generally? fuck no, it was hell on my adhd. on a particularly self destructive day? yeah and i might finish a college application before deciding to sleep on any major life decisions (and then i wont do it! 10pm rule that shit!)

5 ) can you parallel park? yes! i used to be the only one of my friends who could but i live on a street with only parallel parking and i think theyre getting better at it :D

6 ) a job you had that would surprise people? i used to be a camp counselor for one summer! everyone used to always tell me id be bad with kids because i didnt really like them, and i actually tried failing this interview but i guess they needed people, so i got the job. i got on swell with the kids! uh. not so much with the other adults tho. i accidentally made the ice tea spiked at the end of the summer and needless to say i was not invited back. i look back on it fondly :)

7 ) do you think aliens are real? of course. its unthinkable that humans are the only ones around in the whole universe. as they say, life finds a way

8 ) can you drive a manual car? nope. dated a guy who did once, and im ngl i was kinda into it, but i never learned myself.

9 ) what's your guilty pleasure? k pop photo cards 🙈 while I agree that guilt is for the weak, I do think I spend an unreasonable amount of money on those

10 ) tattoos? not yet, but ive got plans. my mom is super against them so while im at home, i cant. when i move out tho, i really want to get a set of wings in honor of ffvii (the first video game i finished)

11 ) favourite colour? i like yellow, like the mustardy kind but im partial to green and black

12 ) favourite type of music? i spend a lot of my attention on the punk/rock so like fall out boy and mayday parade and i listen to a lot of indie shit like glass animals and basement punk like the front bottoms and mobo, and recently im into kpop, particularly zerobaseone. also! i suspenct that no matter what, if i like the rhythm of the rap put in front of me, its highly likely ill enjoy it

13 ) do you like puzzles? i like puzzles so much i made it my job! one could absolutely say i like puzzles lol, me and my sister used to do them a lot and for her last birthday i got her a 10 pack.

14 ) any phobias? im not fond of men with raised voices, but on a lighter note, i wont go more than 5 feet into the ocean because i grew up in jersey on movies like jaws that made me wuite scared of shark attacks

15 ) favourite childhood sport? i uh didnt play sports 🫡 i liked watching hockey though and i still watch nhl hockey now! so that might count?

16 ) do you talk to yourself? oh yeah. all the time. i cant do tasks if i dont talk myself through them. it might not be out loud all the time (i respect public spaces and the quiet associated with them) but theres a constant running monologue i promise.

17 ) what movie(s) do you adore? cheesy answer but i LOVE inception its one of my all time top 5 movies i could watch it in any mood and it would amaze me.

18 ) coffee or tea? i like both, i prefer tea, but im not allowing myself to have either right now. im trying to get myself off of caffeine again because i recently started going back to work and drinking more coffee and what do you know? my migraines made a comeback

19 ) first thing you wanted to be growing up? i wanted to be a famous singer, and sometimes i still want to make music but i dont know, i guess it got away from me at some point. i still make little singing audios and send them to my friends and my mom always says i have a nice voice so the dream stays alive :)
