Fantastic interview with @ylieke by @ettelene for the @silmarillionwritersguild. Everyone check out this amazing artist -- I'm obsessed, thank you. Ylieke, we are soulmates, clearly lol:
Storytelling-wise I go for drama or conflict most of all, hardship and horror even. The more striking the trials and tribulations are, the more fascinating it is to paint them. Just like a book where the characters are facing challenges is a more exciting read then a book where everyone remains happy and untroubled throughout three hundred pages.

“Fëanor wedded Nerdanel, a maiden of the Noldor; at which many wondered, for she was not among the fairest of her people. But she was strong, and free of mind, and filled with the desire of knowledge. In her youth she loved to wander far from the dwellings of the Noldor, either beside the long shores of the Sea or in the hills; and thus she and Fëanor had met and were companions in many journeys.”

Artist ask 1, 3 & 6?
Thank you for the ask!
What is your favorite color to work with? Blue! I love all the shades, and it is my favorite color.
3. What song(s) do you listen to when you do art? It depends upon what I'm drawing; sometimes I listen to music that fits the mood of what I'm drawing, more often, I listen to a playlist of my favorite songs.
6. Tag your favorite artists/inspirations! Most of my art is fanfiction, and a lot is inspired by people on tumblr. Looking at what I've drawn in the last year, my biggest inspirations are Tolkien, @frodo-with-glasses and @that-angry-noldo, with favorite artists including but not limited to @rittare, @secretmellowart, @kai-janik-art, @ofmiceandwomen, @echo-bleu, @thelien-art, @catkin-morgs-kookaburralover, @frodo-with-glasses, @emilybeemartin, @mersilisk, @jennydolfen, @ylieke, @busymagpie, @naarisz, @eilinelsghost, @sweetmaggie, @violecov, @koyunsoncizeri, @ilaneya, @leavespics, @yidany, @arlenianchronicles, @wanderer-clarisse, @gianfare, @windrelyn, @hirazuki, @nailsinmywall, @anattmar, @sesamenom, @forestials, @sakasakiii, @airendis, @lorica-art, @elena-kukanova, @tarvabaggins, @redbootsindoriath, @fonmuller
...I did not realize I followed so many artists. Well over 1/4 of those I follow are artists XD

Featuring @ylieke's incredible art like this portrait of Sauron
Tumblr media
Ringed by wordless faces, the portrait room in an art museum has a certain hush to it. There is the human face, many times over, a deceptively simple theme. Yet within those faces, lines hint at past pain. Eyes flash from a face defined by age or youth. The best portraits seem to capture just a moment in a story passing on either side of that brief second in time. It is possible to imagine what happened leading up to the portrait and what transpired after. The impeccable, impressionistic paintings of Ylieke seem to belong in such a gallery. Although Ylieke describes her work as centered on storytelling, these are not complicated action scenes. Instead, it is the eyes, the hands, the faces of her characters that speak to what they are feeling and experiencing in that moment, leaving no doubt that there is a rich story happening on either side of it.
In our latest Tolkien Fanartics column, firstamazon @ettelene (Tumblr) caught up with Ylieke to learn more about her technique, goals, and beliefs as a fan artist. Interestingly, Ylieke describes her own work as, "not so good at drawing emotions," with which this viewer would strongly disagree. However, no matter what you creative form of choosing, Ylieke's careful look at her own work and approach to art might be useful advice: "Sometimes illustrations just don’t come out as they were envisioned. The best course of action in this case is to finalize the work as well as you can and move on. The next work will be 0.001% better."
You can read firstamazon's interview with Ylieke here: https://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/node/6965, published by @silmarillionwritersguild.
P.S. If you'd like to get our weekly email newsletter, you can subscribe here. Each week's edition includes fanworks added to the SWG that week, SWG news, and a rundown on ongoing events around the Tolkien fandom ... and of course our regular columns like Tolkien Fanartics, Character of the Month, a Sense of History (real-world comparisons), Cultus Dispatches (Tolkien fan studies) and more!

I'm genuinely curious about the Yavanna/Melkor pairing. What inspired you to put these two together? Are there going to be more fics centered around the two of them in the future?
Admittedly it wasn't my idea at all. @demonscantgothere suggested the ship on the server a while ago and shared this gorgeous artwork by @ylieke that gave us a lot of thoughts and feelings.
I've been thinking about the pairing since then and the first thing that came to mind was the spring/summer vs. fall/winter dynamic. Yavanna is the Queen of the Earth and created the kelvar and olvar, she's Mommy Mother Nature if you will, while Melkor is responsible for the existence of snow and frost. In general, Yavanna is all about life and growing things, whereas Melkor introduced death, decay and natural disasters which at first glance just destroy and kill her creations, but are actually an important part of nature if you look at the big picture, one example being volcanoes and how they provide fertile soil.
It's similar to the light vs. darkness dynamic between Melkor and Varda and you could even draw parallels to Melkor and Nienna (evil vs. good, cruelty vs. mercy, wrath vs. patience, etc.). With Varda and Yavanna more so than with Nienna there's some inherent enmity and dislike which can lead to either opposites attract or an odd fascination with one another or at least spicy hate sex. I think you can apply this idea to all sorts of Melkor ships actually, he's an excellent foil to pretty much every Ainu (even Mairon - order vs. chaos, fire vs. ice) and probably at least a few Incarnates too (for example Fëanor, though in his case Melkor would hone in on their similarities).
Another interesting observation in regards to Melkor and Yavanna are the similarities between Melkor and Aulë - as we see in "Of Aulë and Yavanna", their relationship also has a certain element of friction and opposition to it. You could go as far as to say that Aulë is the more "agreeable", "chill" and "domestic" version of Melkor, the one you can settle down and have a decent marriage with, while Melkor is the one for hot (literally) and spicy hate sex. You could easily take Yavanna's canon marriage as "evidence" that she has a thing for men she can argue with...
So yeah, there certainly are some interesting things to explore with this ship and I'm definitely down to write more about them in the future. At least I can say that (as is the case with pretty much every ship involving Ainur) y'all are always welcome to give me prompts for them for drabble challenges/prompts lists/other events🖤

Tagged by @dalliansss for the WIP game
Elf was too busy to notice his coming tonight. In doubt he stood in front of the armour. Near lied two clothes for the choosing, both red and embroider with eight-rayed stars: one was the robe and other was light gambeson to be worn under the armour. The sword he had held in his hands. A beautiful that reflected the light. He raised it in front of his face and in it Melkor saw his eyes burning like brightest stars of the sky. Fëanáro in turn noticed the shadow of purest black and turned to face it, sword still in hand. His body was tense and ready for battle, but the Vala just laughed.
“A sword would not help you if I came not in peace,” he said with a smile, “Although, you should not have one, aren’t you?”
“And you shouldn’t have talked with any of the Eldar before your second trial and yet you have,” Fëanáro reminded with bitter annoyance, less on him and more on himself for not noticing it back then, “So stop with pretending. You knew I made swords.”
Tagging @my-last-brain-cell-is-socrates @ylieke @ everyone else who wants to share a bit of their work.

see the tag for this AU here <3 its going to be their one year anniversary soon. I realized I never drew Maglor with a broom, so I fixed it. He needs all witchery accoutrement in my opinion.

for this ask game
1. A fanon characterisation that you love
That's actually pretty difficult because I think "fanon" is harder to pin down than people often make it out to be! For every two people who write something a certain way there are at least three who do it differently and I think it's sometimes doing even similar interpretations a disservice to lump them together as monolithic (in the context of how I see the term "fanon" usually used, namely with mostly negative connotations). So I'm never really sure what I'd label fanon and what I wouldn't! That being said, Maedhros and his world's worst case of eldest daughter syndrome are near and dear to me
3. One of the best takes you’ve ever seen
answered here, but the other day i also remembered the take that the personality and appearance Sauron took on in Eregion could have (at least partly) been a deliberate Finrod-pastiche and I love that so much, it's the perfect combination of plausible, funny and horrible. There's no way I'll find the post in question now but if anyone knows which one I'm talking about feel free to shout at me/share a link
5. Recommend three (or more) blogs to follow
@ylieke, @anattmar and @rosedaughter are some of my absolute favourite silm artists! <3
