MASTER LIST OF INSTRUMENTAL PLAYLISTS FOR WRITING (OR FOR STUDYING, MAKING ART, ETC.)
Tumblr media
I find that the perfect writing playlist can GREATLY enhance the writing experience. Even if it doesn't make your writing "better" (which it can, since it helps writers with visualization, tone, and mood), it can definitely make your writing flow easier!
Personally, words distract me when I'm writing, either by breaking my train of thought or by getting me too into the music so that I'm jamming out to my favorite tunes instead of writing.
Therefore, I've amassed a vast knowledge of instrumental music across a variety of media over a course of many years. Now here I am, deciding to share all of them with you!
Maddy’s Favorite Instrumental Songs
Just like the title says. All of the best pieces of instrumental music I've ever heard, compiled together with no regard for genre. It can be a bit of a whiplash playlist, but some amazing recs in there that I just like listening to in my free time, not just for writing.
Maddy’s Ultimate Instrumental Playlist
A mega compilation of 550+ fantastic instrumental music from a variety of media and genres. Kind of a whiplash playlist if you put it on shuffle, but is a great start for anyone looking to find what kind of instrumental music they like! Playlist Groupings in Order: Independent instrumental songs, live action movies, animated movies, animated tv shows, live action tv shows, video games.
Maddy's Instrumental for Sleep
Some more chill vibe instrumental for people who either A) want to sleep or B) want a relaxed playlist that won't distract you with loud volume and sudden changes in tempo or melody.
MISC PLAYLISTS:
you're a haggard adventurer discovering worlds beyond your wildest dreams
Music to inspire wonder and wanderlust, the kind of feeling you get when you finally reach the end of a mountain hike and see the world stretching out before you.
you're a hero who's just lost everything
Basically the most sad instrumental music I could find. A playlist for grief and revenge.
more beneath the cut :)
you're a cowboy in the great American West
Cowboy instrumental for all of your ambient and writing needs. Or if you just really want to feel like a cowboy.
you're a divine witness
Epic choir music (no English). Most religious, some not, but all kind of have that eerie sacred vibe. I listen to this while writing my book about angels and demons.
you’re a scholar uncovering the secrets of the universe
Great chill study playlist! Has the kind of same exploratory/discovery type feel as the haggard adventurer playlist, but more dark academia.
you’re a villain plotting to take over the world
Villain-coded instrumental! Sinister, dark, and/or unsettling.
you're an academic weapon
HIGH BPM STUDY PLAYLIST! Keeps me focused, hyped, and helps me work faster!
you're an ancient god
Playlist that gives an ancient/eerie vibe. But some ancient gods are merciful- so there are some upbeat songs for wonder and awe!
you're falling in love
Music that encapsulates what I think falling in love feels like. Very beautiful, tender, and uplifting instrumental.
you're fighting the final battle
Intense and epic battle music for all of your fight-scene-writing needs! Good for getting shit done, but isn't necessarily restricted to high BPM like the academic weapon playlist.
you're having a tea party
Refined instrumental for a tea party, including classical, big band, and some miscellaneous goodies.
you're in a chase scene
Music for writing chase scenes. Pretty good hype music, too. Includes soundtracks from classic chase scenes in popular media!
you're in the medieval times
Medieval-sounding music for all of your ambient and/or writing needs.
you’re in your childhood room. the door is open a crack. people talk softly downstairs.
A playlist dedicated to nostalgia, to the feeling of lying in bed with your nightlight on after being too tired to stay awake at your family get-together. Could either make your day or break your heart lmao
you're the happiest you've ever been
Lighthearted instrumental meant to lift your spirits! A playlist dedicated to the joys of the little things.

Writing Playlists: A Rough Guide.
As someone who can mentally visualise my story as I’m writing it - rather like a film playing in my head - I find it helps me to have a soundtrack to accompany it. That way I can work on specific parts of a WIP by listening to specific parts of my playlist. So, here is how I set up my Writing Playlists. There are many variations I use, so here are a few.
Follow the Outline, Damn your eyes!
One of the more common setups I use is to find a song that reflects the mood of a specific chapter, and then create the playlist off my story outline. I have done this with my Echoes of Eternity playlist, and it gives a nice sense of the story arc. I have a list of the songs in my world-building notebook, as it was useful to refer back to the outline when planning it. Overall, this has resulted in a very clear - if somewhat mixed media - playlist.
Did Someone say My Name?
Equally, you can just go off character vibes. Songs that remind you of what your character’s childhood was like, what they eat for breakfast, their love life, their death… This usually ends up being somewhat vaguer in terms of acting as accurate backing, but does allow an insight into the character’s mind. As well as having playlists for Characters from my WIPs, I have a lot for my favourite characters from fanfic and history.
Overtures
Finally, you can create a playlist that introduces the setting. Nature sounds, bardcore folk, fantasy rpg and tv series music for a fantasy world, for example. Or a mix of classical music, Victorian drinking songs and Assassin’s Creed sneaky music for a Victorian detective story. Creating the soundscape a character would hear is helpful for describing scenes and action shots. I haven’t done this as its own playlist, per se, but I do a lot of background music for my fanfic and short stories.
Hope this helps, and Happy writing! 🌿

If you're looking for new music to write or imagine scenerios to: STOP. This is for you.
A time traveler's lament Favorite part: I have been to the future, and I don't wanna scare you. But not only were you not there, they never even knew you.
Just. Don't. Die. (Or kill, don't be killed)
Friends to Enemies Confrontation Favorite part: Incipient, I stung myself. An insect unaware it’s being crushed but hoping it could save itself.
You don't want to die after all.
Both a revenge and a victory song Favorite part: And I am missing you, are so much worse. A cenotaph, a bar fight in a church, a relief to remedy. But hey, it's never as bad as it seems, the ocean will abate eventually, they cast their nets out graciously. (Come here.)
Running away to your best friend's house. They didn't know they were dead and you saved them. But you know and you'll never forget. Favorite part: If you're gonna plead, then plead with me. I'm the one who knows the story.
Lost in the wilderness (not taking care of yourself and you're not taking messages) Favorite Part: I have built a machine that built a machine and pulls the callouses straight from your hands. And if they were there from digging for some bitter truth, well ain't that too bad?
You love someone but you are terrified of hurting them. You hold them close and they start to bleed. Favorite part: I'll donate my warmth and my hands will keep you safe, the cold will wither while we wait, but surely some must die.
A moody, heavy song (which you can sulk to when you are trapped in a torture compound) Favorite part: Falling up the stairs. Heaven's heavy-handed. Today, it's theirs.
You're a rugged cowboy who escaped certain death and had to leave your former life behind, but at least the stage and the crowd love you. (Alternate versions are in the album) Favorite part: We could clean it up, starry-eye my desperation. It looks better as romance.
If you like the music or you like the scenerios listed for the songs, all of these things happen in WOE.BEGONE and you should check out the podcast!

Am I the only writer who doesn't like to listen to music while writing? It seems like everyone else has a collection of playlists to write to. It's weird, because practically every other minute of my life I've got headphones on to listen to something, but not while writing. Maybe it's because I'm a singer, so any song with lyrics I'm tempted to sing along, which is the ultimate distraction. I thought the solution would be classical music. I have a lot of movie and video game soundtracks, but even those are distracting to me.
Music is just so emotionally specific, and if the vibes don't match the scene I'm writing, it throws me off. I feel like I'd spend half my time finding just the right song, then I'd get sick of it because I'm not a fast writer. I also don't really want my favorite songs to become associated with moments of frustrating writer's block forever more. I prefer total silence, but have sometimes settled for white noise videos like "wind in the trees" or "afternoon rainstorm" to drown out more annoying sounds like construction next door. I've thought of getting some really good ear plugs to ensure silence no matter where I am.
Are there any other writers out there who crave pure silence while you're working?

An Emily Prentiss Writing Playlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, I've only written one Emily Prentiss one-shot so far, but I couldn't help but make a playlist for Emily as well. I do have a lot of other ideas for Emily to write out when I have the time. I want to thank everyone that liked my Emily fic so far. I guess I didn't realize she had such a large fan base.
I will say that a lot of these songs are more mainstream compared to my Aaron Hotchner writing playlist (found here), but I still think these songs encapsulate Emily's personality well.
As I did with Hotch's playlist, I'll make a YouTube playlist with the songs that I can find online for your listening pleasure. Hopefully, this will happen tomorrow or over the weekend. I hope you all have a great Friday. Lots of love - Levi

Which playlist 🎧 should I make?
I am painfully aware that I haven't been here much as of late - that's mostly because there's been a dismal amount of writing/editing happening due to a reading spurt + miscellaneous life stuff taking over. That being said, I feel like making a playlist to get me back into the swing of things. Help me decide:
Yes, I'll post the winner (with non-spoiler placements/explanations as applicable).

my top 5 writing strats to reach your desired word count!
1.
Sprints. This is what helps me when I write. Set a timer for maybe 5 to ten minutes, than write without stopping for those minutes. It can really help with writer's block and get your creative juices flowing.
2.
Daily word counts. Set a small goal, maybe 300~ish words per day. You don't have to stop once you reach your goal, obviously. Somedays you'll go way beyond and somedays you'll just barely reach your goal. Just keep aiming for it.
3.
Set a time to write. It helps get your mind moving to set a specific time to write. You can plan scheduled breaks as well. Write for 30 minutes, than rest for 10 minutes, that kind of stuff.
4.
Take a lot of breaks! Rest whenever you need to, and then some. It will help with your motivation a lot. Have a healthy breakfast, a nice sleep and a warm shower before writing, and rest once you need to.
5.
Music. Music personally helps me a lot. I can pump out a lot more words with the power of my spotify playlist. It helps me get into the right mood for my story and can help you focus more. One downside though is that the lyrics can also distract you, so be sure to be careful about that one.
