“Wait…”

It wasn’t the word that caused the Villain pause. It was the desperation behind it. The rain was hammering down against the fire escape outside, Villain’s hand still holding the window up. A small hand was clutching the fabric of their hoodie and Villain was left frozen like this.

They turned their head over their shoulder to see Hero. Head bowed, eyes drawn, focused on their hand in Villain’s jumper as if they didn’t quite expect it themselves.

“Yes Hero?” Villain asked, voice gentle.

Hero licked their dry lips, eyes lifting to Villain’s, looking at them through their fringe. It cast the shadows in Hero’s sockets, exposing every line, every bag under them. And they were wet with unshed tears that seemed too much for Hero to shed. Like if they did they would crumble to dust.

“Please… stay. I— I haven’t slept…” Hero whispered, voice barely audible, and loud at the same time. Loud in telling Villain how desperate they must have been to ask Villain for help. To stay? To help them? To show this vulnerability. This weakness.

It told Villain everything they needed to know.

Villain shut the window. It was the best night’s sleep Hero’s had in weeks.

aizawa is asleep on your couch.

that fact in itself isn’t a big deal- he sleeps everywhere. it isn’t rare to see him curled up in his sleeping bag on the floor of his classroom. his students have long gotten used to it, stepping over him if need be. it’s very endearing to those who know and love him. but you know better.

aizawa is constantly tired because he never truly rests.

he never fully lets himself sink into a true slumber, one ear always listening in case something happens, in case someone needs him. (there have too many times where he wasn’t with his students when they needed him-and he’s determined to never fail them again.)

so there’s few times that aizawa actually sleeps. this is one of those times. he’s slumped over on your couch, mouth hanging open and snoring. his eye patch has half fallen off because he’s buried his head into the cute throw pillow with a black cat on it that you got because it reminded you of him. (he acted like he didn’t think that was funny, but he pulled you into a kiss just after you held it up and showed it to him.)

you hate to do it, but you know his back is going to kill him the next morning if you let him sleep like that any longer. so you walk over and perch on the edge of the couch by his waist and begin to gently run your fingers through his hair, twisting it lightly when you get to the ends of the inky strands. over the years you’ve learned how to wake him up without startling him. he is a hero after all, and when he’s startled his first thought is defense, which ended up with your arms in a strong hold before he realized it was you. (you’ll never forget the look on his face whenever he realized that it was you.)

it shows how deep in sleep he is by how it take you calling his name a couple of times to get him to stir. one dark eye slowly blinks open to look at you, and a small smile appears on his face when he sees that’s it you.

“hi.” you whisper, a grin of your own showing on your face.

“hi.” his voice is deeper than normal, a gravely quality to it that only appears whenever he first wakes up. “what time is is?”

“almost midnight. c’mon hero, let’s go to bed.”

he lets you pull him up, not helping and making you do all the work, smiling at you in a sleepy, goofy way whenever you huff at him. the click of his prosthetic hitting your hardwood floors is jarring in the otherwise silent apartment, but you both ignore it. when you get to your bedroom, he sits on the edge of the bed to start taking his leg off but pauses whenever you get on your knees before him.

“let me do it.” is what you murmur, but you don’t get to before he cups your face in one large, calloused hand, engulfing the side of your face. his eyes are deep as they stare at you nuzzling into his palm and kissing the center. he swipes his thumb over your bottom lip before letting go and leaning back, leaving you to it.

after you take it off, you place it gently beside the nightstand and crawl onto your own side of the bed, beside aizawa who was already under the covers and waiting for you. he pulls you close with one arm, so that you’re facing each other and holding hands in the middle by your chests. he had taken his eye patch off while waiting for you, and you gaze at him, quietly marveling at the rough, gorgeousness he posses so quietly.

he leans forward to press a solid kiss to your forehead, then your lips. it’s a slow, lazy kiss, both of you tired from the day yet still wanting to show each other your love. the two of you fall asleep like that, foreheads pressed together, hands held between your hearts that have long since matched beats.

I have been awake all night and I think, since we got to follow Zuko from S1 even though he didn’t join the Gaang until the bitter end, we should’ve gotten the same for Toph. In between season 1 and early season 2 plots, we’d occasionally cut to this earth kingdom noble family for seemingly no reason.

Ok they are rich and they have the daughter. Alright she’s blind that’s interesting. The Beifongs will comment about canon events and their daughter is quiet and perfect in the background. Then one episode we see her earthbend something small, intriguing. Also intriguing she only looks helpless and lost when other people are around. We get more solo perspectives of her, she’s a bit more coarse away from her parents. Her earthbending continues to be used secretly, impressive but not monumental. We suspect she’ll be similar to Katara, an eager, untrained bender who learns as she teaches Aang. We wait with anticipation for this vulnerable girl to see the world and own her power.

And then they drop The Blind Bandit episode and every episode that follows are unchanged and oh. Oh. Now we are really meeting Toph.

One thing that really got me about this update is that while they’re back on the road now and Twi is alright…it’s not a victorious departure. It’s sorrowful, it’s fearful, and it’s ridden with guilt and regrets about what just happened

Their body language says it even more than their words do. They’re slumped, they’re tense, they’re frowning rather than smiling. Hardly anyone cracks a joke this time around.

Their journey is beginning to take a toll on them. And although the Shadow just suffered a crushing defeat he doesn’t have the same emotional aspect that our heroes have had — and continue to have — to deal with.

I definitely foresee some arguments — maybe even physical altercations — in the future. That alone makes them vulnerable to the Shadow’s revenge (which previous updates have shown he doesn’t hesitate to exact. He’s angry. He’s coming for the heroes. Especially Twilight.)

I look forward to seeing how this will all play out

Using "Sibling Title" in Romantic Relationship Is NOT Incest

You know, interacting with majorly English community about Asian media made me realize that English doesn't have any "sibling title", something that was so common in Asia (and perhaps other continent too cmiiw), thus I noticed some of them have a little difficulty on perceiving what "sibling title" actually meant. Combined with shipping war and incest allegory, many misunderstanding are created. Somehow yesterday I happen to stumble upon two of them in almost the same moment so I wanna make this post to vent my frustration.

First is this :

The segment that they meant is when Kota called Izuku "nii-chan" and Ochako "nee-chan" after Ochako's speech.

Yes, Kota called Izuku "Big Brother" and Ochako with "Big Sister". But really, even the translator clearly explained in their translation that "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" are not only title for older siblings but also title/name for a young teen or 20-ish boy/girl (overall people still in youth). Other people on twitter (X who?) pointed out that Kota means those title in relation to him and not to Izuku-Ochako, which is true, Kota may think of Izuku and Ochako as his big brother and sister at that situation. But even if he's not, he will still use "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" titles toward Izuku and Ochako because that's the title that was correct from person on Kota's age to people on Izuku/Ochako's age. Of course, that doesn't mean Izuku and Ochako are bounded by sibling/familial relationship in any form.

For example, this is a "7 years old" kid Conan ("a young boy" in disguise, for complicated reason) called 18 years old Heiji and Kazuha with "nii-chan" and "nee-chan" while at the same time helping them to hook up. He didn't really think of them as his brother/sister like in personal level, but he still used "sibling title" because that was the appropriate ethic for him.

Next is the example in broader sense, but the point is still because they are "brothers", there's no way Gilgamesh and Enkidu have romantic relationship.

let's pretend it's not completely bizarre to input arabic perception on a story with a language that way predates arabic, with different time, culture, and setting. Let's use arabic now. Brother in Arabic is "akhi", derived from Akkadian "ahu", the language that was used on 12 tablet Epic of Gilgamesh standard version ("Ses" is Hittite/Sumerian version).

This is the excerpt from Epic tablet by Andrew George, when the word "ahu" is used to described Gilgamesh and Enkidu :

The thing is, "ahu" may meant brotherhood, but they don't necessarily mean bounded by familial forbid-to-marry relationship. The word "ahu" can mean brother of same social standing, close male associate, or the proof of companionship, for example King Tushratta used "brother" (ahu in akkadian, shesh in sumerian) to Pharaoh Egypt which they have brother-kingdom relationship. Of course they are not "family" with each other and their family can marry each other.

Even if, as the commenter said, translated into arabic, "akhi" is not meant for strictly brotherly relationship. The word itself means "brother, close male friend, male associate". In fact, there's webtoon in my country (Muslim majority) that has female lead called her love interest "akhi". And this is her pray so God can make her meet her "akhi".

Translation : "There has been 6 years passed but I still haven't meet "akhi". Please God lead him to be close to me"

Of course when the female lead called her crush "akhi" she doesn't mean that there's familial feeling from her to him that prevent her for wanting to marry "akhi". And readers from my country completely expect her to still call her husband "akhi" even after marriage.

Those "sibling title" are not and never strictly platonic. Those are title for almost-familial-but-not-really attachment, usually to emphasis social construct. It just, I don't know the exact term but I call it "polite endearment title". When it comes to romantic relationship/marriage, even with "sibling title" there will be no incest feeling involved as long as the couple are not bounded by blood of close family, share the same mother's milk/wetnurse, nor raised together from before puberty (the latter may depend on situation).

P.S : I wonder, do English users find it weird if we Asian use the exact same title for sibling and for romantic partner? Like, you guys know that Korean fangirls called their idols that they want to date/marry as "oppas" in the same word as they call their "oppa" in home, right? I am Javanese, I call my blood-brother "mas", and I expect to use that word for my husband too, like my sister who called her husband "mas" even though she's older than him.

Jesus, who cares about that, [Sidekick]? They've done more than enough to show us that we can trust them. Hey, [Villain], you don't have to share things you don't wanna talk about, okay?

– I..- Um, thank you, [Hero]...

"You know, [Sidekick] was right", [Villain] said, their eyes fixated on the ground. They had sat down next to [Hero] a few minutes ago, feeling the cool summer breeze that grazed their own skin and the one of their new teammate. "I've known all along."

[Hero] looked at their former foe in confusion. "What do you mean?", they asked, turning towards them.

"I knew who [Supervillain] was", [Villain] said with a hollow voice, "...What they did."

[Hero] frowned. "[Villain] you don't have to talk about this, if you don't want to. [Sidekick] shouldn't have said that an-"

"But they were right", [Villain] interrupted, "I must've known who they were and I did. I knew who they were. I knew everything and I joined them regardless."

[Villain] pulled their knees closer, resting their chin on them. Their expression became distant as they started talking: "You know, before I joined [Supervillain], my life was a mess. I grew up in a world that didn't have any mercy for weaklings or outsiders like me. I was hurt, angry and alone and I wanted nothing more than to be with someone who actually liked me. I wanted to belong somewhere... I wanted that feeling you and your friends experienced every day and seemingly took as a given."

[Hero] suppressed the urge to say something. They had not at all expected this kind of talk from their former enemy – especially not with them. Still, they nodded seriously to encourage [Villain] to keep talking. It seemed to work:

"I... I didn't even know that I was searching for something. I didn't know how desperately I wanted to feel needed... Useful, you know?", [Villain] let out a trembling sigh. They closed their eyes before they continued: "I didn't know that, but [Supervillain] did. It was easy for them to bait me with the interest they showed in me and my abilities. I knew that what they did was wrong, but I-.. I just thought if I worked hard enough for them, then at least someone would see something in me... That I could-", [Villain] pressed their eyes together as tears started to spill,

"Oh, Villain...", [Hero] murmured softly. They reached out to gently touch the other one's shoulder, but [Villain] pulled away.

"Don't." [Villain] whispered and wiped their tears away. They took a deep breath. Their face had hardened into a blank mask when they continued:

"[Hero], I don't deserve the place you offer me. I don't deserve to be in your and the team's presence. I don't deserve the kindness you gave me since I came here. I'm not worth-"

"[Villain], stop." [Hero] had put a warm hand on [Villains] wet cheek. The softness of the gesture startled [Heros] new partner who looked at them with wide eyes. [Hero] managed a small smile before pulling [Villain] into a warm embrace.

"Don't say things like that. You're here, because you did what was right. You came to us and helped us out, because you knew what [Supervillain] does is wrong. Because you couldn't bear it. That says a lot about you as a person.", [Hero] gave [Villain] a small squeeze before letting go. They put their hands on [Villains] face again and smiled as they locked eyes with their former enemy.

"You did some bad things and you need to take on responsibility for that, but you won't have to do that alone. You are with us now and we will support you, okay?"

[Villain] shook their head in confusion. "H-How can you take me in... Just like that?", they whispered while new tears stained their face and [Heros] fingers, "How could anyone possibly want me after I what I've done?"

To that, [Hero] knew the answer.

"I can, because I like you. Because we like you, [Villain]. Because you're worth staying and because you have good inside of you... Because you chose the light, even though your life was set up for darkness." [Hero] said warmly. They smiled at [Villains] unbelieving expression, before embracing them once again.

"...One day, you will see that, too."
