Summary:

The marriage is supposed to be a punishment, a way to extend Wei Wuxian’s isolation. After all, Wangji has met the man (when they had both been boys, untouched by war); Wei Wuxian could hardly be asked to fit seamlessly into the regimented life of a Lan.

Yu Ziyuan is a formidable, cruel woman, Wangji decides then. She is also wrong if she thinks Wangji will play part in her cruelty.

(And Wei Wuxian, it seems, is so much more than meets the eye).

At Wangji’s side, Wei Wuxian has run out of patience. Wangji feels it in the shift of his husband’s stance, and squeezes Wei Wuxian’s hand. If the sect leaders are going to be deliberately obtuse, well then Wei Wuxian has never been one to pull his punches. Wangji should know. “You wanted to speak to the Yiling Laozu,” Wei Wuxian says, “so speak.” It takes them by the throat. Wangji looks at a fixed point ahead, but he still sees the statement ripple through the gathered clans, sees a few of them choke. Sees the smarter ones put one and two together to make three, connecting the young cultivator who had razed the fields of Qishan, laying waste to the Wen army, to the young man who had stood defiant in front of Jin Guangshan in his own palace, to the protector of the Wen remnants, to the thing that had settled in the Yiling Burial Mounds. Yiling Laozu. Yiling Laozu wed to Hanguang-Jun. (Wangji shouldn’t smile but he thinks the one to make it to Qi deviation first is Lan Qiren).

Ah, hostage?” Wei Wuxian says. “I don’t hold anyone hostage, least of all children. The boys can go wherever they please.” This is met with great disbelief, as if they can’t see with their own two eyes that the children aren’t restrained. A-Yuan is starting to feel upset, if the way he clings to Wei Wuxian is any indication, his bottom lip wobbling in a manner he has definitely learnt from A-Yu. The only thing that keeps him from crying is the gentle whispers from Wei Wuxian telling him he is being very good, and that he’ll only have to be good a little longer. “Jin Xuanyu, come to your father,” Jin Guangshan says, smiling like a reptile. Wangji almost laughs at the mere idea of it, that Jin Guangshan has ever been a father. Jin Zixuan looks uncomfortable enough at the idea, throwing a disparaging look at the man who had sired him, as if to say that Jin Guangshan has never been a father to anyone. “A-Yu,” Wei Wuxian says quietly but clearly, “go to your father.” This, too is met with silence. Wangji feels A-Yu shift against his leg as if having decided not to hide anymore, and his eyes widen when the child tugs at his sleeve. A-Yu says, “Baba, up!” It’s purely on reflex that he lifts A-Yu into his arms, the weight familiar. A-Yu, still shy and nervous, buries his face in Wangji’s neck. It’s where he’s most comfortable, and Wangji can’t help but settle a protective hand against A-Yu’s back. The gathered sect leaders and their disciples watch this whole thing, too stunned to even speak or protest. “Well,” Wei Wuxian says cheerfully. It masks his surprise well, but Wangji had seen a flash of it. “That’s clear then. Let it be known that this is not Jin Xuanyu. It cannot be anyway, since I gave birth to this child and no one’s laid a hand on me except for Hanguang-Jun.” Wangji says nothing, not a word. His ears grow hot, but his expression remains completely smooth. He had done more, much more, than simply lay hands on Wei Wuxian, but that is something no one else is privy to.

Favourite fics of 2023

Now that the year is over, I figured I'd cast my eye back over the previous year to see what were my favourite fics I discovered that year. Notably, they may not have been published last year--just the ones that I read during that time period.

I have absolutely no idea what they will be, so I'm curious to dive into my bookmarks...

MDZS/CQL

Stunted, Starving Juvenility by TomatenMark -- oooh, apparently it was last year that I consumed this. It's a behemoth of a story at over 700k words; it's a slowly sprawling tale, and I read and reread it during the same year. And it's been one of the rare WIPs that I have been following faithfully. It's an AU in which WWX and LWJ, early on during the Gusu lectures, have the extra-canonical chapters' dreams about each other (that's to say, the ravishing in the library and the peaceful domesticity) and this triggers them realizing their feelings, which in turn changes rather a lot of things. This sounds underwhelming, but the fic really is very good and rather epic in scope! I have appreciated how it depicts WWX--intensely intelligent, precocious, but in need of guidance; and he and LWJ are darling together. I only hope it keeps being this good for the next 700k words or however much it takes!

You'll See Me Again by anon -- oh man, I loved this one. It's sadly a short-ish WIP (12k> words), but the concept is brilliant: it's NHS, who's time-travelled back and is determined to fix everything by getting WWX as his younger brother, and it's told from NMJ's baffled point of view. It's very good! I just wish it were longer.

Mourning Dove by jaemyun - a WIP featuring a dark LWJ who's very fed up with the hypocrisy of the cultivation world. Hasn't updated in a while, though...

SVSSS

This was the year I read SVSSS! Boy, did I ever love it. This naturally unlocked a new fandom for me, so here are some of my favourite fics:

A Transmigrator and a Time Traveler Walk Into the Bamboo House by VeryCharismaticDragon - this is super lovely! This is Binghe who time-travels from after SQQ's self-destruction to the start of the story. And he's determined to change things, even as he's trying to understand them. The whole thing is great.

The More You Don't Know by Neery - this is sweet and angsty in just the right way. Binghe is convinced SQQ only loves him because he doesn't realize he's a demon, and does his best to hide. (There's also a canon divergence in there.)

The Peace Between Divine Pec- ah-hm sorry - uh…Peaks by AceOfDivineChlorophyll - I need to catch up with the latest chapters of this, but I have it bookmarked as "absolutely love it, mega oblivious SQQ thinks he's LBH's advisor and not realizing that he's effectively the empress (something everyone around him sees) and of course not realizing also that he's super in love with LBH."

This is also the year when I consumed this canon!

Born of Fire (We Shall Not Fall) by TheDefenestrator - I loved this fic so much. So much. It's my favourite take on omegaverse I've ever seen in any fic, ever. It's got a super lovely Ye Xiu/Han Wenqing slowburn and Ye Xiu joining Tyranny, but it's also set in this universe which brings this omegaverse context into everything and makes it extra delicious. It's so well done. I just hope it updates one day.

Bond/Q

a bloodless coup by Ark - scorchingly hot, great characterisations, very well done.

There's a lot more fics that I read and enjoyed last year, but these were in my bookmarks as absolute faves, so I figure it's fair enough to end it here!

Top 25 Fics of 2022

1. all that and more by Euphorion | The Untamed | Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji | 20k

His first thought is that Lan Zhan meant them for someone else. That he just woke up at—he checks the timestamp—6:30 am on a Sunday and decided to go absolute full nuclear seduction option on some poor boy he met on Grindr, who would now be missing out on the best thing to ever happen to him because Wei Wuxian had a bad habit of distracting—of—oh.

Heather Says: So, I don’t normally go for the “dude thinks he’s straight and is increasingly dense about wanting to fuck his best friend” trope, but whew, this one here is an exception. The way Euphorion writes Wei Wuxian is this perfect storm of chaos and VERY in character. Also, it’s really sexy.

2. A Thorough Reassessment by veilchenjaeger | The Untamed | Song Lan/Xue Yang/Xiao Xingchen | 37k

Xue Yang looks up at him, his usually piercing eyes softer, almost shy, under hooded lids. It’s just a fleeting glance, but it’s intense, and when his eyes return to the ladle in his hand, his smile is sticky sweet.

Oh, Song Lan thinks. Xue Yang is in love with me.

Heather Says: Okay, just trust me here. I fell in love with this OT3 last year as the wangxian hyperfixation was slowly easing, and this was a really delightful fic. I secretly love fics where Song Lan and Xue Yang are sharing Xiao Xingchen and end up accidentally falling for each other.

3. haarlem by spqr | Hannibal | Hannibal/Will | 6k

“Hannibal,” he thinks he says. He gets told later that he doesn’t really say it at all, but that the entire police station—most of which is waiting outside in the rainy parking lot—hears his voice clattering around inside their skulls like someone standing on a roof banging pots and pans and screaming at the top of his lungs: HANNIBAL, HANNIBAL, HANNIBAL.

Heather Says: Okay, so this is first of a truly shocking amount of @andthepeople’s work that made it onto this list. I will not apologize. I’d considered limiting it, and to a certain extent I have, but restricting it more than I have didn’t feel honest. Fact of the matter is that their fic blew me away this year. I haven’t even really thought about Hannibal in ages, but I had a brief spell earlier this year where I clawed through as much of it as I could get my hands on. This one features a Will Graham who is a telepath, which is very obviously my cup of tea.

4. here's a story by mimilamp | The Untamed | Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji | 45k

Wen Qing tells her about the couples’ retreat and Wei Ying laughs like, Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!, like that, four times in a loud row. Wen Qing says, “So that’s like, a rude no?”, and Wei Ying says, “Biiiiiiig no. No thank you. Nooooo thank you.”

Heather Says: Rule 63 Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, featuring the sexiest butch Lan Wangji that I have ever read and typical disaster Wei Wuxian with bonus lady parts. Mimilamp writes the best rule 63, it is known.

5. A Twist of the Knife by RC_McLachlan | The Untamed | Lan Xichen/Nie Mingjue | 14k

Xichen, do you remember when we were younger—before Sunshot, before our brothers gagged on the metallic taste of war—and I stayed at the Cloud Recesses that spring? On the first morning, you woke me at that ungodly hour and dragged me to the crest of the mountain that overlooked Gusu to the east. As the first rays of the new day touched your cheeks and cast you in gilded vermilion, I felt the strangest feeling in my gut. A shifting and settling. A sense of finality.

When I picked up the brush to write this, I felt it again. It crept into my fingers and eased the tremors that seem to plague them constantly, which explains the sudden improvement in my penmanship.

This will be my last letter to you.

Heather Says: Lan Xichen/Nie Mingjue is a pairing that I typically appreciate in an aesthetic sense, but don’t often actively pursue. This though, was just really lovely—and yes, tragic—all the way around. Told from Nie Huaisang’s POV after Nie Mingjue’s death, he finds a series of letters that his brother never sent to Xichen.

6. Heal Thyself by @astolat | Harry Potter | Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter | 46k

"Are you going for the course?" Lovegood asked. "You have the NEWTs.”

“What course?” Draco said, then, “No, don’t be ridiculous,” when he realized she meant the notice pinned up on the board he’d been staring at: Applicants To The Introductory Mediwizard Course For The Coming Term Shall Present Themselves In The Chief Mediwizard’s Office By August 24th.

Heather Says: I love a good Draco redemption AU. I also am very, very weak for every single thing that astolat produces. This one was honestly probably my favorite that she’s written in a very long time, featuring found family and a very long pursuit towards redemption.

7. heat lightning by spqr | Avatar: TLA | Sokka/Zuko | 9k

It’s a text from Toph. Heads you socks and cookie mocap again – which with Toph’s shitty speech-to-text software means Heads up Sokka and Suki broke up again.

Heather Says: And here we have the second and certainly not last of spqr’s fics to feature on this list. This one is a blast from the past Zukka in a delightful modern setting featuring sexting and messy boys. spqr is a master of characterization, and it really shines here.

8. Coral Bone by @kaikamahine | Arcane | Silco/Jinx | 57k

"It's not like you to leave a vacancy," she said. "Let me be useful."

Heather Says: Okay, okay, okay. Let’s talk about toxic relationships and how with this particular one, all I really wanted out of fandom was a fic where Jinx tried her damndest to throw herself at Silco and be (mostly) neatly rebuffed every time. Or, the even more bad wrong option, successfully seduce the old man, but the dubious consent being entirely on Silco’s side of the equation. Eh, eh? Nobody else came out of Arcane wanting that? Anyway, this fic is amazing and is basically exactly what I was craving.

9. Grenadier by @kaikamahine | Arcane | Violet/Caitlyn(/Jinx) | 24k

Then, yesterday morning, Caitlyn had walked yawning into the bathroom and found Jinx sitting on her vanity, swinging her heels and eating the cucumber slices right out of her waiting face mask.

She put her hands up immediately and bared teeth. "I surrender! Cuff me, sheriff, I'm at your mercy."

Heather Says: Okay, so all that I said up there about what I came out of Arcane craving? This was not that, at all. I came out of Arcane with no real inclination to ship Violet/Caitlyn in any real sense because they’re too put together as a couple for me to really pursue the ship outside of canon, but apparently when you add Vi’s crazy sister to the equation, I get incredibly interested. Also, I got THREE whole Elizabeth fics this year and am ecstatic about it. There’s another one where Jinx lives in Ren’s ceiling and I just! It’s so good! They’re all so good!

10. 1-800-ROBIN by spqr | Batman | Tim Drake & Jason Todd | 12k

“Gotham Youth Mental Health Hotline, this is Jason speaking. Can I ask who I’m talking to?”

Heather Says: Oh look, the third one. Like I said, this is probably going to get embarrassing but look. Sometimes one author dumps a series of bomb one-shots over the course of the year and like ten of them make your top 25. It happens. Anyway, I had never once considered venturing into the Batman fandom, but I trust this author with my life at this point. There are several other Batman ones from the same author, but this one was my favorite. Found family is very much my weakness.

11. Lifeline by astolat | Fast & the Furious | Dom/Brian | 37k

"Vampires dominate by biting, alpha wolves dominate by fucking. What the hell’s going on between the two of you, I don’t even have a clue."

Heather Says: Another fandom that I have never once had an inkling to delve into, but again, I trust astolat and would basically read anything she’s written. Also, I love the vampire trope so so so much, and this was astoundingly hot.

12. what survives of us by @wildehacked | The Magnus Archives | Jon/Martin | 32k

I don't forgive you, Tim says, and then there's a click.

Heather Says: Considering there’s twenty-five of these, I obviously can’t pick just one, but if I could, this one would definitely be in the running. This brought me all the closure that I never knew I needed after the Magnus Archives finale, every gorgeous, heart-stopping word of it a love letter to this podcast that stole so many of our hearts.

13. Royal Flush by astolat | GOT | Jaime/Brienne/Margaery | 85k

Robb Stark had swept his entire hand of cards off the table, and Tyrion couldn’t see how to make a single play at all.

Heather Says: Oh, look, another astolat fic. I’d say I’m surprised, but I’m not. Her Game of Thrones fics have always been long, epic, and usually incredibly compelling in more ways than one, but I THINK that this one may have been my favorite. I really like the way that she writes Jaime and Brienne together, and adding Margaery to the mix really worked. I mean, I’m downplaying the sheer amount of politics and world-building and just about every other reason to love this story, but the shippy parts were a delight.

14. if i stare too long by @brawlite & @toast-ranger-to-a-stranger | Stranger Things | Billy/Eddie/Steve | 191k

After the end of the world, Billy Hargrove is a mess. But at least he has company.

Heather Says: Okay, I know that it’s long. It is very, very long. But, it was my first real taste of this OT3 after I finished the most recent season and it’s really, really good. Character’s voices are spot-on, and I love their Eddie. I love the way their Eddie is with Billy, in particular, but obviously with Steve too.

15. Lovesick in Loch Nora by red0aktree | Stranger Things | Eddie/Steve | 62k

Even though Eddie's name has been cleared legally, he's still very much on trial in the court of public opinion. Dealing drugs isn't a lucrative occupation anymore, and getting a legitimate job in a town who still considers him a killer isn't much of an option, either. Eddie is beginning to think skipping town and starting over somewhere no one knows his name is the only chance he has left. Steve has another idea.

Heather Says: I think this was the first Steve/Eddie fic that I read this year that I really sat down and enjoyed (in a non-OT3 context). It’s really good and super sweet and just all around a fantastic fic.

16. The 1,000 Hour Sleep by spqr | Star Trek | Spock/Kirk | 27k

“You’ve been exposed to a novel form of radiation,” M'Benga explains. “It seems to prevent you from sleeping, and yet requires sleep in order to leave your system. One thousand hours of it, by my estimate.”

“Hell of a catch-22,” Jim jokes, but his smile feels weak.

Heather Says: I do love how Star Trek just kind of spawn and catch me with my guard down. I never seem to have to go looking for Star Trek fics, they just find me when I need them most and boost my mood for like a month and a half after. At the risk of sounding like a broken record - this is really good! Characterization! Sleeping together (in a non-sexy way!) as a plot point!

17. (feel like i die) ‘til i feel your touch by decideophobia | Star Wars | Obi-Wan/Anakin | 15k

Their bond, ever since Obi-Wan had gone to the Halls of Healing, sits eerily silent at the back of his mind; mute in a manner it hasn’t been in years, maybe ever. Anakin hasn’t touched it since the—diagnosis. Obi-Wan keeps running careful fingers over it, wondering if he’ll feel anything. He never does. With Anakin’s side of it so tightly shut, the once vibrant connection is void of—anything; nothing there to even give him a slight zap at the contact.

Obi-Wan has never considered himself a masochist. Now, a little pain is lightyears more preferable to the dead nothingness that’s constantly lurking around his connection to Anakin.

Heather Says: Ahhh, tragedy! Touch starvation! Curses! So much to love in one perfectly sized 15k fic.

18. Heat Wave by spqr | The Sandman | Dream/Hob | 6k

“Sounds like you’re horny to me,” says Matthew.

Heather Says: The Sandman was SUCH a delight this year. I did fall in love with the whole cast and was intrigued enough by the Hob/Dream pairing that I hunted a couple relatively unsatisfactory ones down, and then this one (and the two-three others by the same author) found me! I really loved everything about this, particularly the dream settings. 10 out of 10, would read again.

19. oh it's not real (if you don't feel it) by BeeLove | Stranger Things | Chrissy/Eddie | 31k

In which Chrissy Cunningham gets the chance she deserves to take control of her life and also maybe falls in love with a too-cute-for-his-own-good, tattooed rocker boy along the way.

Heather Says: I really fell in love with Chrissy Cunningham this year. We had for a small portion of one episode, had her and Eddie together for even less time, but you know? It woke something within me.

20. sick part of a sick thing by betts | Stranger Things | Chrissy/Eddie | 45k

“Gotta say, I didn’t have ‘sneak into Chrissy Cunningham’s room at three a.m. to help her come down from a bad high’ on my senior year bingo card. Excuse me if I’m a little in over my head here.”

Heather Says: This was actually the fic that made me fall in love with Chrissy. I read it all in the span of a day and had some incredibly severe emotional bleed-off (mind the tags), but you know what, it was a great ride. A lot of this fic colored my characterization of Chrissy. It’s sexy and sweet and takes an abrupt dip into very angsty before coming out the other side.

21. Dirtbag by betts | Stranger Things | Chrissy/Eddie | 10k

“Eddie,” Chrissy says, looking away like she’s shy, like he hasn’t dicked her down in every way imaginable a thousand times. “We haven’t seen each other in a year. Don’t you want to get caught up before we start?”

Is that how she sees the obligatory pre-fuck small talk? Getting caught up?

“Health, good. D&D, good. Band, good. That’s all I’ve got.”

Heather Says: I ALMOST didn’t read this one. The tags spooked me a little and after the last Chrissy/Eddie fic from this author, I was very concerned about more bleed off, but I’m really glad I gave this one a chance. It is sweet and yes, angsty, and the infidelity, while not to be ignored, is a lot more nuanced than I was expecting, with a couple surprises.

22. In A Year by tenddisorder | The Untamed | Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen/Xue yang | 58k

When Song Lan wants to defy the natural order of things, there's only one person he can turn to.

Heather Says: Another long one, this fic did a VERY good job at bringing the Hozier song “In a Week” to life. It was immersive and slow and dreamy in all the best ways. Again, there was angst, but it was such a perfect sleepy kind of angst that you almost don’t notice how saturated in it things are until it comes out the other side into something sweet.

23. dirtbag by spqr | The Goldfinch | Boris/Theo | 10k

y did you do that, he types out to Boris, meaning why did you kiss me and why are you reminding me about it, why aren’t we ignoring it like usual, then deletes it and slams back the rest of his drink with extreme prejudice so he doesn’t have to remember what his best friend tasted like. He tasted good. Fuck.

Heather Says: I read The Goldfinch in 2017ish. I watched the movie a couple months after it came out. I haven’t really thought about it since. Then spqr published this fic and it basically punched me in the throat. It is unapologetically horny and so, so incredibly good. The characterization is the stuff of legends.

Heather Says: It was really, really hard picking only one of these WWDITS fics. But as much as I love the slice-of-life’ness that is wilde’s other WWDITS fic, this one really, really took me by the throat and shook me. Characterization obviously means a lot to me since I can’t stop talking about it, but the characters really come to life in this one.

Whenever Mike’s allowed herself to think about Harvey and sex, she’s mostly imagined: Clooney and Lopez in Out of Sight, Bruce Wayne and Bond girls, clandestine choreographed encounters in anonymous hotel rooms, gorgeous Italian and Russian and other such intimidatingly foreign supermodels peeling him carefully out of tuxedos with price tags that would make Mike’s eyes water – neat, elegant encounters that left the women as puddles of goo and Harvey cooly unaffected, lighting a cigar on the balcony and looking appraisingly out at the city while his partners recovered.

She’s gratified to discover that she was completely, totally wrong.

Heather Says: Yet another fandom that I did not expect to make any kind of comeback since I haven’t thought about Suits since.. god, 2013? Maybe? Anyway, rule 63 where Mike has always been a girl. There is trauma. There is also some REALLY sexy moments of pure UST before you even get to the sex. It was. A DELIGHT.

My favorite MDZS fics

not in order cause i don’t think i could rank these if i tried. some i like better than others and you’ll be able to tell by what i say about them.

like speaking to my heart rating: T warnings: none pairings: wangxian

this is basically a “his dark materials” au. everyone has a daemon (an animal physical manifestation of their soul). this is the longest completed mdzs fic on ao3 and took me several months to finish. mostly cause i stopped reading it for a bit. it made me cry from happiness 3 times in a row. its basically a rewrite of canon with a lot of positive changes. from the tags “Canonical Character Death. Some people live! And some people still die in this fic it's just a matter of who STAYS dead and who is really dead ;)”. some of villains are more evil than in canon. without spoiling anything i can say that everything works out in the end. and its a super slow burn about 400k worth of slow burn. the summery is more of an excerpt and is pretty long so i won’t include it.

Everyone's Got a Theory about the Bitter One rating: E warnings: none pairings: Jīn Líng/Lán Sīzhuī

this one is just really sweet, its better than you think it will be

summary: Jin Ling is lucky. He’s always known that soul-names meant nothing. His parents matched, but that hadn’t protected them. They died tragically and young. Stories about the everlasting love of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. See, this was all Lan Jingyi’s idea. Or the one in which the juniors write wangxian fanfiction and make out with each other; or Jin Ling's very bad day (year) caused by all his terrible uncles

your heartbeat, across the grass rating: E but you could easily skip the smut. most of the fic is T or M warning: none pairings: wangxian

summary: AU where A-Yuan is professional footballer Lan Wangji's biggest fan, and his babysitter Wei Wuxian wants nothing more than to forget his days as the photographer of their school football team, calling out to the captain from the stands just so he'd look around at him.

this mattress is a desert island rating: E but could also skip the smut and the other bits are mostly T pairings: wangxian

the title does not give credit to how amazing this fic is. i really think it’s one of my favorite mdzs fics i’ve read. it was so fluffy and so sweet. my heart was beating so fast. it’s like what if wangxian were not idiots during cloud recesses and it was omegaverse. i was really into omega verse and this just hit the spot perfectly. the courting is so sweet.

summary: Now, several months into his stay at the Cloud Recesses, he has a very good nest, even better than the one at home. It has something special, something his nests have never had before. An alpha’s scent. Or; Lan Wangji’s robes keep disappearing mysteriously. Wei Wuxian’s nesting habits may have something to do with it.

lwj being very horny for wwx for 20k words, there’s only sex at the end but there’s sexual content throughout and its very sexually charged considering the setting.

Summary: Every student of House Mandrake is assigned a study partner, a counterpart from House Valerian. Lan Wangji suspects, with some outrage, that he's been given the troublemaker. Kushiel's Legacy fusion, you don’t need to know anything about those books except for what is explained in the authors note.

and time is but a paper moon rating: M warnings: graphic depictions of violence pairings: wangxian and qingxicheng (Wēn Qíng/Jiāng Chéng/Lán Xīchén)

i read the first chapter and i was already so happy and it just got better from there and now at the end i am crying and please for the love of jiang cheng please read this. everyone who deserves happiness gets it and everyone who does not dies. i’m gonna go reread the first couple chapter now. i reread this whenever im reading a particularly sad or angsty mdzs fic and i just want some fluff and some happiness. basically just the best time travel fix it out there. wwx does a spell that makes him start from the beginning of his life with all the memories he has now. which is all of canon and then some. everything works out and no one suffers any meaningful damage. its the 5th most popular mdzs fic on ao3

how to be a heartbreaker rating: E warnings: none pairings: wangxian

So good! I love sugar baby fics but I cannot stand daddy kink stuff. This barely has a daddy kink and it was fine for me. I really like fics like this where it’s a slow burn but they’re still together for a lot of the fic. This feels like a slow burn even though it’s really not.

summary: “Lan er gege,” Wei Ying sings out an old nickname, his lips curving up into a well-rehearsed smile. It’s adorable, and it’s pretty, and he knows it mesmerises anyone who lays their eyes on him. He has done it a million times—bewitching and convincing men who need to be convinced. He just doesn’t expect to hear the hitch in Lan Zhan’s breath, too, and feel the taller man’s grasp around his wrist tightening. He fell for it. A sickening thought suddenly enters his brain, and Wei Ying wonders if he should be so cruel. “Do you want to find a private space for us, Lan Zhan?”

I didn’t cry but the twist and the bonding really makes this fic. I highly recommend.

summary: Wei Wuxian has been haunting his childhood home for three years. He's perfected the fine art of scaring away all the tenants, and has grown used to living with the dying flowers in the garden as his only company. When Lan Wangji buys the house, Wei Wuxian fully intends to drive him off too. Except Lan Wangji is beautiful, and interesting, and captivating company - even if he supposedly doesn't know Wei Wuxian exists.

hunters seeking solid ground rating: E warnings: none pairings: wangxian

this might be my most reread mdzs fic, not all of it but parts of it, especially the beginning. there’s some angst that i tend to skip over. I dont know if I’m just going thought it right now but I cried multiple times while reading this fic. Which is impressive cause its not even that long. But my heart was clenching but entire time and i cried so much. And it really broke but then it put me back together again. Cause wei ying has gone though so much shit but at least he still has lan zhan who loves him so much. There’s so much physical non sexual intimacy and that part was just so nice.

summary: “Hanguang-jun,” Wei Wuxian repeats. His heart clenches. He wants—but he’d really meant to have this nightmare stuff down before they met again, so he wouldn’t find himself relying on Lan Wangji’s nearness. He’s not supposed to go back yet. But he’s so tired, and his will crumbles. “Yeah,” he says. “All right. Take me back to Gusu with you.”

a little note for the summary its not wangji asking wei ying to come back to gusu with him. It becomes apparent when it happens but i found that a bit confusing. I really dont think this is a spoiler but It’s the juniors

build me no shrines rating: M warnings: none but there is a pretty graphic depiction of drowning in chapter 2 pairings: wangxian

I’ve been reading so many canon divergent with essentially the same plot of canon. And its gotten pretty boring because i already know what’s gonna happen so its nice to read a post canon fic where i dont know what’s going to happen and theres actually a plot I’m invested in. Plus this one was very good. It’s the same “wangxian are idiots who are so in love they can’t see the other is also so in love with them” thing but i really liked this.

summary: Wei Wuxian opens the letter and skims through, feeling his frown deepen with every line. “Oh. A request from Yiling. This man Tong Shen writes, 'I can’t explain what’s happening — you wouldn’t believe me if I tried. The hills are moving and they are hungry. Please send aid, Hanguang-jun, this humble one begs you.' Well, my curiosity is certainly piqued." pretty sure this was the first mdzs fic i’d ever read and what a great first fic.

summary: Wei Wuxian’s hand jolts, spilling a drop of wine onto the tabletop. “Love?” he croaks, then clears his throat and tries again. “Lan Zh— uh, Hanguang-jun, in love?” “Have you not heard the story?” the other young woman asks, looking pitying. “You must, it is a truly heartrending tale of star-crossed romance and mutual pining — go to any storyhouse in town, everyone has been requesting a reading of this book.” “There’s a book?” Wei Wuxian says blankly. In which the junior disciples (namely, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen, and a reluctant Lan Sizhui) turn to RPF in an attempt to rehabilitate Wei Wuxian's reputation so that he and Hanguang-jun can get together and get married and live happily ever after. It's... surprisingly effective. its the 3rd most popular mdzs fic on ao3

I said I’d start posting some fic recs because I miss those sorts of posts, and so here we are!

Tabula Rasa by xantissa. DMBJ, pingxie. Summary: Zhang Qiling forgets. Then he comes to some interesting conclusions regarding his relationship to the man named Wu Xie. This fic is has such a nice Zhang Qiling pov, it is funny and tender and in character. I loved it’s take on a “first time” they get close. Everything xantissa writes is gold.

With a Twist of the Kaleidoscope by naye. Guardian, weilan. Summary: “Trust me,” Zhao Yunlan says.Shen Wei actually huffs at him, as if he is being so patently ridiculous that fear-tinged fury would be too dignified an answer. “How can I trust you?”Ye Zun tries a different tactic to defeat his brother, that may tear apart everything Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan have worked to build between them. This is one of my favorite fics I’ve ever read (most of these are honestly). Fantastic, phenomenal, I love this take on the universe and this story. I love Ye Zun, and everyone's, characterization in this to pieces. This fic inspired me so much it spurred me to end up writing multiple post canon fix it fics of my own. Everything naye writes is really beautiful, really in character, really well done. There is also a podfic version.

Divergence by 13empress. Star Trek AOS, spirk. Summary: A single Romulan from Nero's crew survives, who is pulled through the forming singularity to approximately 13 years into the past. Aware that he could lose everything if he were to wait for his revenge, Nero decides to even the odds by kidnapping a young Spock and Kirk and deliberately sets about to change the time line. Meanwhile, scientists monitoring the anomaly that the artificial singularity left behind receive confirmation that a member of Nero's crew is alive and in the past. Uncertain of the impact upon their own time line or indeed upon the Federation of the (new) alternate time line, Starfleet Command issues orders for the Enterprise crew who are in their second year of serving together to investigate the matter by going through the anomaly. Pre-slash K/S, slash ending. Implied slash for young K/S. One of my favorite spirk stories and Star Trek AOS stories of all time. In retrospect it probably is the reason I love time travel and time loop stories so much.

Monotone by seredemia. MDZS/The Untamed, wangxian. Summary: Wei Wuxian reincarnates, Lan Wangji lives on. In the modern world, they meet again. One of my favorite wangxian fics and an extremely in character and thoughtful take on a modern setting/reincarnated characters. (It inspired me to write the fic over the moon by softcorevulcan just a short story similar modern setting for xiyao).

Observations by anon_j_anon. Star Trek AOS, spirk. Summary: First Officer Spock comments on life aboard the Enterprise and his service under Captain James T. Kirk. This fic is on multiple sites, anon_j_anon made ebook download versions too. This is one of the best stories I’ve ever read, incredibly crafted. It focuses on the entire enterprise crew and it feels like a ‘tos’ style continuation of the mission to go where no one has gone before for the aos characters.

Void by Alxina, xantissa. Love and Redemption, Luohou Jidu/Yu Sifeng, Chu Xuanji/Yu Sifeng. Summary: What happened in the Demon Citadel when Luohou Jidou realized Yu Sifeng was a lot more injured than he let on. There is a desperate need for more lovely fanfic for this story, and this fic delivers. Lovely writing.
