Gotta say, I've been out as a lesbian for 3 years and nonbinary for a year and a half. And I've noticed something.
Just because someone *always* gets your name and pronous correct, and angrily calls out anyone who forgets, doesn't necessarily mean they support you.
Conversely, just because someone struggles to remember your name and pronouns, or can't wrap their head around gender neutral/neo pronouns at all, doesn't necessarily mean they DON'T support you.
This is applicable to any situation really not just queer shit. Watch what people do, not just what they say, and you will find your friends. Someone might shower you with compliments and have common interests with you, but what happens when you tell them no? Do they get angry when they are corrected? Do they have kind things to say about other people?
My colleagues wouldn't know a gender-neutral pronoun if one hit them in the face with a dictionary, but they make sure I've had a lunch break and get home safely. They have my back if I have a difficult patient. They defend me against other staff members who like to create drama and bitch about people as if they're still in the school playground. If someone has something to say about me being a big ol' queer, they make it known that discrimination has no place in our unit.
My best friend in the whole entire world forgets my name and pronouns every day. When the organisers of her therapy group changed "men and women" to "people" and "he/she" to "they" in order to be more inclusive, there was outcry. Everything from the "it just doesn't sound right" grammar-policing nonsense to the "f*cking special snowflakes are offended by everything". She came down on them like a ton of bricks. She said if the organisers hadn't told them that it was changing, that they wouldn't have noticed. She told them they obviously haven't loved someone outside of the gender binary and they were missing out. She then told them how she had seen me grow and develop since I came out, and how in awe she was of the person I had become. No, she doesn't understand it at all, but why should that mean that she can't be there for me and appreciate how happy I am to be able to be me? Why should that mean, because you lot don't understand it, that someone with the same issues as the rest of the therapy group feels unsafe and unwelcome and doesn't get their issues resolved? As a result, a few of them changed their minds, INCLUDING HER OWN FATHER, and the rest at least shut the hell up about it.
ON THE FLIP SIDE...
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns delighted in making me walk on eggshells, inventing reasons to be angry with me, convinced me I was a terrible person and even went as far as to try and turn me against my own therapist. They tried to tell me that my therapist only said I was a good person because she was paid to, and that because they themselves had a psychology degree that they could tell I had all these complexes and needed to work hard to be a good person, and it was unlikely I'd never get there. (I chose to listen to my therapist and stop being friends with this person).
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns continued to do things that made me uncomfortable when I asked them to stop. Never said in as many words "you're not allowed to hang out with your friends" but conveniently had an emergency every time I had plans, and accused me of being uncaring if I needed my own space. They knew I had difficulty asking for help, but still got angry with me when I asked because I didn't ask "soon enough".
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns told me they would look after me and they didnt. .
A queer person threatened to misgender me MORE when I corrected them.
I'm just saying, that if you choose to yeet everyone who doesn't get your name and pronouns right... that doesn't necessarily make you safe. We live in a very binary world. As much as we want that to change, it won't if we ignore or shout at the bits we don't like. (Believe me, I've tried).

What’s better than Hero whump or Villain whump leading to their sidekicks caretaking?
Hero and Villain both getting whumped by a worse third party and their sidekicks having to team up to help them and even though they don’t trust each other, their respective leaders mean so much to them that they’re willing to truce for their safety and care

Lloyd: You're telling me you were a Merc for hire, commited murder and other crimes, been tortured, drowned, and beaten
Feng: yes
Lloyd: and you're afraid of our five foot tall rebel alien healer?
Feng: *holding his broken arm* yes please don't tell her I did it again

Okay, but imagine that a gristled soldier comes down on a forest moon, and gets orders to “take care of the natives”, but the natives are... teddy bears?
And the soldier is like, “naw fam, cuteness always wins,” and joins the other side.
Thanks to @sweet-sugarcubbe for the lovely commission!

[ feed ] sender offers a forkful of food out to receiver, helping them eat
Tumblr media
It'd been a full day since Greyson had found himself rescued after an attack in Coerthas, by the most unlikely of saviors no less. Briar had found him shelter and tended to his wounds when no one else would so much as let him inside. Undoubtedly saved his very life. In the time that had followed there were countless attempts to get Grey to eat, but the garlean had refused. Stressed weighed heavy on his mind and as a byproduct, his stomach. Briar had even gone out to hunt for fresh meat and cooked a delectable strew that would aid in the injured's recovery. It mattered not.
Grey hated being fussed over like an incapable infant. His own parents hadn't even nurtured him in such a way. He all but expected Briar to make little airship sounds as a bite was offered once more. Fed up, Grey pushed the attempt away with enough gusto to spill a good bit of strew, knocking the fork from the other's grasp. Great, now he was even acting like a child.
Forty-two summers, clearly age did not always mean wisdom. Looking back to his red headed caretaker, Greyson saw the slump in his shoulders, the way his head hung low, and felt a twinge of guilt. He watched Briar pick at a piece of roast between gloved fingers and his own brows furrowed with the aversion of his gaze. One heavy sigh later and Grey dropped his jaw, opening his mouth that he might be fed. Surprised by the shift in posture, Briar eagerly sat up to assist his new found friend in eating.
@briar-ffxiv, thank you for the prompt and the assistance.

"you're the only person i can rely on." (Genya @ Molly)
@pagetreader
She scoffed under her breath, always fretful of being overheard inside the palace walls; it was no better in the courtyards, but there was something unsettling about the stillness, the formality of the indoors.

Story Prompt 60
There existed a figure shrouded in darkness. Some called them a villain, while others whispered tales of their ruthlessness and cunning. Yet, amidst the chaos they wrought, there beat a heart heavy with remorse.
Caught in the web they spun was the hero, a beacon of light in the murky depths of the villain's domain. Unexpectedly, a tender emotion blossomed within the villain's hardened soul - guilt. Guilt for the tendrils of affection that wound around the hero's unsuspecting heart, guilt for the innocence they tainted with their allure.
"I'm here if you want me," the villain murmured, their voice a haunting echo in the caverns of the hero's conscience.
The hero's gaze wavered, torn between duty and desire. "This… this can't be right," they faltered, their resolve shaken by the raw vulnerability in the villain's confession.
"It's not about right or wrong," the villain countered, a hint of desperation seeping into their words. "It's about what we feel."
But the hero shook their head, a flicker of anguish clouding their features. "I can't… I can't betray everything I stand for."
Silence lingered like a heavy fog between them, pregnant with unspoken words and shattered dreams. With a heavy heart, the hero turned away, their footsteps echoing hollowly against the stone floor.
As the hero vanished into the depths of the night, the villain remained rooted to the spot, haunted by the specter of what could have been. And though they stood on opposite sides of the battlefield, their hearts remained intertwined, bound by the fragile threads of forbidden love.
"I'll wait for you," the villain whispered into the darkness, a solitary figure standing sentinel at the edge of oblivion. "I'll always wait."

Lise’s attention skittered across the code, trying to find any part of it that looked wrong, that looked like it was the cause of her current error message. But the pesky issue was eluding her.
‘Annalise?’
It wasn’t the sound of her name that caught her attention, rather the hand placed tentatively, briefly, on her shoulder. Startled, she jumped, pulling the headphones from her ears (momentarily grateful that she hadn’t put earrings in) and grabbing the pencil pot from her desk.
‘Woah, woah, it’s me,’ Bear spluttered, hands raised in surrender.
‘Don’t do that,’ she chastised, putting the pencil pot back on the table.
‘I just… Do you want tea?’
‘No thanks,’ she said, feeling the lump forming in her throat. Tea was always Kenny’s suggestion when something was bothering her; too much sugar in hers that it always made him laugh. Usually when she had an error with her coding, tea and sitting with Kenny helped her work through it. They spoke, distracting Lise from it until something clicked, until he offered her the assistance that was completely escaping her.
But now?
‘Annalise, you know –’
‘Bear, no offence but I really need to sort this,’ she said, moving at the laptop. Looking at Bear she could still see Kenny’s empty desk. Could still remember seeing him, drawn out by Eve coming in. He’d yelled, told her he’d be back while she was in the bathroom. Just a warning that he wasn’t missing.
‘We’re here,’ Bear said before she could do anything else. She felt the tightness of her throat, the itching of her eyes as tears welled. ‘I know it’s different and –’
‘Thank you,’ she forced out, the words scratching. It still felt wrong, Kenny not being there, but she was grateful for other people to help her.

Secret steps
Status: Compete
Wordcount: 87k
Rating: Teen
Muggles and wizards are completely separated and muggleborn children stolen right after birth and brought into wizarding orphanages. Albus Dumbledore is the Minister of Magic and is an ineffective leader loosing control over the Auror department that terrorizes the society.
One day a pre-school Granger walks into apothecary in Diagon Alley run by Severus Snape. Interpreting his laconic answers as silent consent, she comes back every day asking him a new potions related question. Their relationship evolves over time - there are years where they barely exchange a few letters to summer brakes spent on brewing in the backroom.
Things take a rapid turn during ministry power struggle, when the newly resurrected Dark Lord Voldemort starts open persecution of muggleborns. Severus Snape becomes the reluctant leader of the Order of the Phoenix and 17-year old Hermione is inducted into the organization.
The story concept itself it good, showing that even under the leadership of Dumbledore, the wizarding society can be prejudiced and dysfunctional and that a leader having pure initial motivation can be misguided and lead to tragic consequences. The change in power just radicalizes pre-existing ideas like muggleborns not belonging fully to the magical society.
The execution however leaves room for improvement. The political background is treated very superficially as bad people doing bad things and offering little explanation. The pacing is uneven with some order meetings described blow by blow and the later chapters rushed and not providing enough detail. Order of Phoenix seems sometimes naïve and it takes Ron Weasley to shape the tactics of the final confrontation, despite talented and seasoned wizards working on the plans for years.
Severus Snape keeps many of his canonical traits, but his characterization is over the top and unnecessarily edgy. Within one chapter he sneers, snaps and snarls what really made me lough - not only does he act like angsty teenager, the whole passage resembles a writing exercise in usage of descriptive verbs.
I was also disappointed that the author decided to write an epilogue leaving very little room for speculation and imagination. The post-war reunions are described in excruciating detail. I can only say that I am relieved that I did not have to read Snape and Hermione kissing with sunset in the background and if the reader can decide if their friendship evolved into a romance.
If you enjoy AU stories and can look beyond stylistic shortcomings, give the story a try
6/10
