thank you so much, anon - i'm thrilled you enjoyed bookbinding, and i'm always delighted to welcome new members to turtle nation.

i'm never great at fan-casts largely because i can never remember people's names, but also because i often have incredibly specific ideas in my mind about how these characters look which i find very difficult to then actually explain. but still... let's get into it:

myrtle

one of my least favourite aspects of the writing of the harry potter series is the fact that characters we are supposed to find unsympathetic are always, always written as some combination of fat, ugly, unintelligent, and inarticulate.

i understand the watsonian explanation that harry-as-narrator is a teenager and teenagers are kind of dicks. i understand the doylist genre reasons for this - jkr is not the first children's author to make use of such tropes, and they are certainly used with a lighter touch in hp than in, for example, roald dahl - and i also understand the reasons specific to the series' central mystery, in which snape's ugliness [the marker of his apparent villainy] actually conceals the fact he is one of the narrative's heroes.

the reverse is, of course, used with tom himself - harry's trust in tom riddle's memory of framing hagrid in chamber of secrets is established right at the start of the scene by harry's comment that they both have jet-black hair; harry's profound empathy with riddle's past in the memory scenes shown in half-blood prince completely disappears when voldemort returns for his job interview and is "no longer handsome tom riddle".

all of which is to say, i do not vibe with the fact that myrtle is written in the text in a way which presents her appearance as a moral failing. this was the decision behind two key points made in bookbinding - that myrtle doesn't lose weight and it literally doesn't matter, and that beauty standards change and a young woman considered unattractive in the forties was not considered unattractive at other points in human history.

tom notes that she looks like a renaissance painting, specifically da vinci's lady with an ermine:

and as for current people, i think bella ramsey would work as casting for school-age myrtle - in particular because they are absolutely tiny and it is very important to me that tom is being constantly hen-pecked by someone who barely comes up to his shoulders.

i find fan-casting tom extremely difficult, in particular because - and i accept this might be unpopular - i find that many of the preferred fan-casts and fan-art interpretations always look far too masculine. [this is particularly the case in tomarry, one of my favourite ships, in which harry "i have anger issues, am a jock, and aspire to be a cop" potter is far too often this tiny, feminine damsel-in-distress, and tom "i would love the chance to be a mammy's boy, spent my teenage years in the library, and create anagrams of my own name for fun" riddle is far too often a pile of twitching muscle intent on snapping him like a twig.]

the things we're told in canon about tom's appearance are that he has dark eyes and black hair and "finely-carved" features, looks a bit like harry, looks exactly like his dilf of a father, and is really hot. we are also told that both he and the later voldemort are very tall, extremely thin, softly spoken, and have a certain elegance of movement. all of which, to me, suggests that we are not dealing with the buff greek god of so many interpretations, but someone who is, in reality, slightly effete.

So...here is the beginning of my ROTTMNT AND Avengers crossover.

"...he...help me up twinzy," Blue whispered to the Purple looking at the humans tiredly.

"Brother you are too-"

"...I know but me introducing us and standing up for a small time isn't going to cause harm...," he whispered looking at them gently. Purple sighed picking him up, helping him to his feet, much to Red and Oranges's displeasure. They helped him walk to the humans. "My name is Hamato Leonardo, third child of Hamato Yoshi and leader of my team...can you tell where we are....year wise..."

Steve blinked. He sounded like a child. "Its...the year 2012...do you not know that?"

Leonardo blinked. "Huh..."

"Leo what did he say??," the red one asked still looking to be on guard.

"Well Raphael...we are apparently in the 2012...and -"

"-in another dimension....we are definitely not in our New York...Can't find logs on April...," Purple stated looking at a holographic screen that floated from their wrist band.

"Anyways....the big guy is our older brother-"

"Names Hamato Raphael and if you hurt my brothers, you'll be in a world of hurt," the red snarled glaring at them.

"Calm down Big Raphie...this is my twin-"

"Not really his twin but we are the same age. I am Hamato Donatello. Or my personal favorite Othello Von Ryan! I am the brains of my brothers."

"....and then our youngest-"

"HI! I'm Hamato Michelangelo!! I am happy to meet you guys!!"

Leonardo smiled softly at that.

"How...old are you all?," Steve asked eyebrow raised.

Leonardo frowned at that. "Old enough. Why do you wanna know," he asked eyes narrowing. He might not have his swords but he will fight if needed.

"You all just...seem young that's all."

Leonardo sighed glaring again. "Raph is 17, Donnie and I are 16 and Mikey is 15...so what," he asked glaring.

absolutely correct, they are 100% barbie people. they related heavily to the marketing because myrtle is everything and he's just tom.

3. who cooks? who cleans up? who’s banned from the kitchen?

obviously turtle are a couple who got together properly in 1947, which doesn't immediately suggest equality in the domestic sphere.

fortunately, myrtle's mum was a suffragette as a teenager and she taught her to have none of that. she cooks but tom does all the chopping [he knows his way around a knife, never ask him why], carves all the meat [ditto], and guts, descales, or plucks anything which needs that doing to it. he's also the one in charge of the bbq, although myrtle draws the line at letting him use fiendfyre to light it.

their mutual hatred of rationing - one of things which first compelled tom to think of myrtle as a human being - as well as the fact that they become incredibly fond of taking extremely dangerous holidays to far-flung places, ends up making them quite adventurous when it comes to new cuisines. salazar and merope jr. are raised on a series of family favourite their parents picked up in mysterious circumstances in albania, and find the food at hogwarts impossibly bland. tom is delighted by the opportunity this gives him to write a series of strongly-worded complaints to dumbledore.

myrtle believes that washing-up is best done by hand. tom thinks this is idiotic, since they both have magical powers. they argue about it daily.

11. what’s a song that describes their relationship? or, what’s the song that they’ve deemed “their” song?

as we know, tom is an enormous fan [although, naturally, he pretends otherwise] of fred astaire - one of the few muggles he's willing to concede might possess some incipient magic.

their song, then, could only ever be this.

29. what is something they can never agree on? how do they meet in the middle?

compromise is not a word in tom marvolo riddle's vocabulary. when they disagree [i.e. constantly] myrtle simply tricks him into thinking that he's won the argument when she's actually manipulated him into doing what she wanted anyway.

30. free space! say something about this ship that you want to say!

obviously - obviously - turtle are a crack ship, but i will die on the hill that they could be made to work feasibly even in a story with a considerably more serious tone than bookbinding.

tom is a far lonelier person than he would like to believe himself to be [an interpretation of voldemort i think is entirely justifiable using canon]. he is also an absolutely ruthless pragmatist [and the canonical voldemort's pragmatism really doesn't get enough attention in fanon]. the sheer force of myrtle's capacity for devotion is something he would find impossible to extract himself from and, while it obviously wouldn't do anything to make him a good person, it would, i think, bring about various changes in exactly how he went about taking over the country which would undoubtedly make him all the more successful and all the more terrifying.

If you think that shows like Teen Titans and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles need to be toned down so that they're more suitable for children then congrats on being another brainwashed pearlclutcher who completely missed the point of both Finding Nemo and Tangled:

You cannot protect your children by trying to shelter them from the world and trying to do so will only make them resent you.

If the movies for grade schoolers aren't straightforward enough for you then maybe try out Stephen King's Carrie instead.
