I try not to post about this too much because I have gotten extremely harassing and also just bizarre anons on the topic.
But, as someone who has lost a significant amount of weight, and has been at the new weight for a substantial amount of time at this point (start losing weight several years ago, have been this stable weight for almost 2 years) and it STILL surprises me how much people have ONLY viewed me for my weight. And how dehumanizing that is.
Obviously, at the funeral, there were lots and lots of friends of the family there. Some people, I have seen frequently over the years but maybe haven't seen too much since covid started. And it's amazing how many people just... didn't remember who I am or recognize me despite me having EXTREMELY recognizable features (same thick glasses, same haircut since I was like... 17, same freckles, same short height) and despite me being one of four people under age 35 there, making it easy to guess which one I was. Making it kinda clear that my defining feature to them was "The fat one." And I know that sounds like a leap but throughotu the years, I have gotten so many "X person looks like you" and the ONLY trait we would have in common is our fatness and maybe they were also a brunette.
But you know what... since maybe it could have been a leap, I let it go.
But several, SEVERAL people thought it was appropriate to tell me--at my grandmother's FUNERAL--that they were proud of me for losing weight. That I looked so much better now. And for most of those people, those were the only things they spoke to me about besides offering condolences. As if the most I could have done with my life was be less fat (and to be clear, by several--most arbitrary, I will not lie--measurements, I am still overweight but more mid-size as opposed objectively, undeniably fat). As if that's the only thing they remember about me was that I was fat before.
And it just... you can take the fat off my body but you can't take the fatphobia-trauma from my heart. Like, how do I look at people the same way knowing that they never looked at me as a fully fledged person? I can't think of a single person in my life that I know by just a singular physical trait. And yet for a lot of people there that was literally all I boiled down to.
Worst part is, most of these people aren't even hateful people. Some of them, I don't even think necessary thought less of me for being fat or didn't KNOW they thought less of me for being fat. But it's just like... you still just reduced me to that. So... how do we move on from that?
And, again, I hate talking about it, because this feels like humble bragging. But it's not. It's just an honest conversation about how fat people are in a no-win situation, even if they one day stop being fat or become less fat. Because losing the weight just makes you realize how much worse people treated you before. And you don't... get over what it reveals about people. Because losing weight will reveal more about the people around you more than it will ever reveal about yourself.
