this is for my ✨ bilingual girlies ✨ I am one which is why this can be grammatically incorrect but whatever
Noah finds your accent ADORABLE. and HOT of course. like, he can listen to you for hours noticing how certain words and/or syllables here and there in your speach sound different from what he's used to hear and it hits the right spot for him;
with that being said, he still jockingly mocks you from time to time trying to do impressions of the way you speak. he never takes it to far though, so it's just an ongoing banter which you gladly paticipate in, intentionally making your accent sound harsher from how you "normally" speak;
and you and Jolly cooperate in making Noah lose his mind with your accents. Hoah goes like "guys, human throats are not designed to reproduce such insane sounds, what planet are you both from?"
you melt when he lovingly says "you're so special, you're out of this world" only to roll your eyes three seconds later when he continues "seriuosly, you're a fucking alien, the more you talk the more I'm sure of it. I won't turn you in though, you're mine now";
he also makes fun of you when you misspell in your texts to him. "darling, are you okay? is everything alright or you having a stroke? should we call an ambulance or an English teacher?":
also, did you know your voice sounds not the same when you speak different languages? no? oh, trust me, HE KNOWS. it never stops to amuse him how suddenly your voice switches to softer and huskier or goes higher and cuter depending of the language. to him it's basically the same kind of "magic" (you call it that) he uses when he sings switching registers, so yeah, your voice is music to his ears. and he loves that more than anything;
sometimes you forget certain words or mix them up and it makes you feel awkward and embarressed. you're afraid that you speak gibberish instead of proper English. especially in front of Noah with his sophisticated way of expressing his thoughts. but not only he ALWAYS knows what you're trying to say, he also makes you feel less in your head about it. for example, he makes up silly stories about him saying the wrong words at the wrong circumstances and embarrassing the heck out of himself (and you're sure it never happened, but he wants to cheer you up so you play along) or he turns your mistakes into something special for the two of you, like an inside joke or a secret code (remember that cringy "I wolf you" line from You? yep, that's what I'm talking about). so when he shows you his new song which is his personal love anthem to you and the greatest thing he's ever written to this day and you say it's terrible instead of terrific, he looks as proud as he only can be and jokingly says he tried his best to make it the worst song in the history of music. from now on all of his song are "terrible". and all about you, of course;
remember when he said that Jolly comes up with the greatest lyrics without realizing it because he thinks in Swedish? same applies to you. it truly fascinates Noah to hear you saying the most beautiful genius things based on some sayings in your first language. he takes inspiration from that and includes it in his lyrics without saying that and you realize it afterwards when you hear him singing it;
he's for sure secretly learning your language just to surprise you all of the sudden. like, you two have a movie night date on your big comfy couch, he brushes his fingers through you hair and says "I love you" in your language and you automatically reply back the same way and then go "wait, did you just..?" and he sits there smiling from ear to ear and being so hella proud of himself, throwing at you one compliment in your mother tongue after another. and you have no idea when or how he managed to learn it all but it makes you love him even more;
which is why the next thing he'll learn from you will be the dirty talk. oh god, help us all lol
ANON SHIT UP RN
COME TO MY HOUSE SO I CAN GIVE U KISSES STOOPPPPPPP OMG MY HEART
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I was born here, but I want to say that, technically my first language was Spanish. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother and I had heard from someone that the way you express your emotions, whatever language you use is your first language, which I thought was a very cool concept. And a lot of times there are words that I don’t know in English so I just resort to Spanish but oh my God literally made me smell so big I’m at work and the noise I let out was crazyOMMGGGGG
I was going to write a small story on this, but you beat me to the punch, but I’m not complaining. I will add onto this later on thank you thank you thank you thank you again.🩷🩷🩷🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

✦ i did make an insane reach, but not about what i expected
(for your information, this is not about the Elliot Cuevas MV that was recently released. this is actually about something else.)
// DRDT spoilers up until ch2 + spoilers for the Literature Girl Insane MV
Tumblr media
i guess i’ll just get straight to the point.
admittedly, i have no idea as to how to crack the number code / footnote #14 at the end of the Literature Girl Insane MV. i think i delved a bit too deep into the mathematics and tried to find some sort of symbolism in the numbers, before realizing i was going nowhere with it. if anyone does solve it, however, let me know. ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ
but i did make a couple of observations about the specific text shown during that portion. about a week ago i found something that could be a hint regarding what the text is about—and if it holds any ground, a possible clue to a certain character’s past before the killing game.
(take this theory with a huge mountain of salt)
———
there’s nowhere i can really start from, so i guess i’ll begin by talking about one of my observations.
Tumblr media
this screen. this specific frame may not look like anything important, but out of curiosity i decided to count the number of question marks on this screen. there’s 32 in total—16 question marks for each row.
other than it being a factor of 256 (16x16), there’s something else that’s also linked to the number. the number of students (total) that participated in the killing games. every killing game has a total of 16 students, at least when it comes to the official series. and with the assumption that DRV3 is a killing game that takes place entirely separate from the other two—this means that Hope’s Peak Academy is associated with two past killing games, which combined, involved a total of 32 students.
aside from that, the footnote “256 words” seems to connect to one of Karasuyasabou’s other songs known as “Jabberwocky Jabberwocka”—and funnily enough, Jabberwocky Island is where the second killing game (SDRA2) takes place. it seems to be too much of a coincidence to brush over.
however, we know that this part of Hope’s Peak Academy’s history has been covered up—so only few have any access to information about it. there’s even direct dialogue that supports this fact; most characters in Despair Time have no knowledge of the previous killing games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this does raise questions as to why Teruko has any knowledge of the previous killing games—but i don’t think we’ll be able to answer those for a while as it seems to be a major part of her character.)
in that case, why this number? (here’s where the insane reaches begin. get ready.)
if we go back to the LGI MV, there seems to be an indication that this specific code is linked to a character—which is seen by this frame here.
Tumblr media
the roman numerals that appear throughout the MV are linked to a crossword that appears earlier in the music video—and this number (I) is specifically linked to Xander, as seen by the solution to this puzzle by @/raspbeyes here. since the code, the ampersand, the equal sign, and the question marks that follow are all in the same font, color, and transparency (as well as general format), we could also say that the text that appears during this portion is linked to Xander.
as inferred from this theory by @/1moreff-creator, it’s likely that Xander (along with Mai) was heavily involved in a (secretive?) operation or at least some sort of research involving Hope’s Peak Academy. the bonus episodes that released in between chapters 1 & 2 seem to hint at these efforts as well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and as far as we have inferred, this project proved to be an incredible risk—leading to not only Mai’s death, not only the new killing game, but also the memories of the remaining Hope’s Peak Academy students being reset to when they were first heading to the orientation ceremony. someone was adamant about covering everything up and leaving nothing behind, but Xander and Mai’s project shattered those efforts, if only for a brief moment. but, how exactly does this relate to the LGI MV? if the dev intentionally placed 32 question marks—one for each participant of the past Hope’s Peak Academy killing games—during a frame associated with Xander, then there’s a possibility that said past killing games are also associated with Xander one way or another. and the fact that this was deliberately placed where a numerical code (possibly related to a message) appears, it’s likely that by extension the message is linked to that association as well.
putting all of this together: the question marks from the LGI MV may contain a very specific clue about the numeric code associated with footnote 14—but not how to solve it, rather what the decoded message is actually about. or, if i can word this better, Xander and Mai’s “discovery” regarding Hope’s Peak Academy was about the killing games that took place there, and the message associated with Xander in footnote #14 will be one that talks about this discovery more in detail. if the information Xander and Mai uncovered was actually about these killing games, i think the reason why it was so risky would make sense—coupled with the fact that the Academy seems adamant about covering up that part of history. though this doesn’t actually provide any proper information as to how to solve the code—and i’m sure there’s a much simpler explanation for the question marks during that specific screen in the LGI MV—i think these observations were at least worth sharing.
as always, take this theory with a huge mountain of salt. and i mean, huge. (- -;)

I think there's something deeply interesting about the Clone troopers learning Mando'a from the trainers, and passing that on to each other. It's probably not a full language, not at first. They only got the basics from the trainers, but they take loan words from Basic, and then from other worlds they're stationed on. It gets passed down to the shinies, evolving and changing quickly. It's a living language, and it has different accents, different words taken from different languages depending on where the troopers speaking it have been for the longest. It's not hidden, not really. The Jedi actively encourage it, though Kaminoans have never wanted it to spread. But it's a remarkable thing, how quickly it changes and how precious it is, for clones to have something that is It morphs into something unique and theirs.
And then, order 66 happens, and clone troopers are phased out and replaced by recruited, but some sources have them training together/training new recruits, and so they pick up on the language as a kind of military slang or code. But it's still a language, still taught and spoken, though more covertly, more carefully even as the clones are slowly decommissioned, but their language is passed on through imperial stormtroopers.
Even when the New Republic seems to have defeated the Empire, there's still Grand Moffs, there's still Stormtroopers, and the First Order rises. And yet somehow, stormtroopers keep this language alive, even though no one who speaks it now knows where it came from, or why only troopers speak it.
Eventually, all those kidnapped children grew up not knowing anything but the first order, and fear, and whispered words under bedcovers that the higherups can't understand. Sometimes they call them natborns and they don't know why. Sometimes they call each other vod'e and don't know why. They know what it means, (it means brother, means sister, means sibling, it means something deeper than that) but not why, not the how. They just know it's a secret. Some of them know songs, and some of them don't get a chance to learn them before they're heard by higherups and whoever knew it was reconditioned and it was lost.
When the First Order falls, troopers who escaped try to find their vod'e, find their family, and along the way they also find decedents of Clones, who speak a language similar to theirs. Who know the words that First Order troopers have only whispered to each other and speak them in the open with their families without fear. Who know all those songs that were so precious and dangerous and more. And they discovered their shared heritage, shared history, through the language the clones built for themselves.

malevolent and the queer-coded villain trope
*disclaimer please respect the #masked tag. while i'm putting these thoughts out into the ether they're not really meant for harlan to see as i don't want to be put on blast for criticising the show. this is not me attempting to malign this podcast or its creator or to go "it's bad and problematic actually so don't listen to it" because that's a frankly horrible and unhelpful way of engaging with media and the world at large. i'm certainly not going to stop enjoying malevolent wholeheartedly or supporting harlan in his creative endeavours. this is not an accusation, it's an observation.
i've been thinking about the queer-coded villain trope in a separate context recently, but something clicked for me with part 34. horror (and other genre fiction but let's focus on the relevant genre here) has a tradition of placing queer elements within the subtext. it's a means of Othering and used to separate the protagonist from whatever evil entity they're up against in the story, be it man or creature, and where the the tropes of the monstrous queer and the queer-coded villain are born from.
a brief second disclaimer. i'm a queer villain and queer horror enjoyer and here to reclaim every single queer-coded villain and monster ever created but acting like the trope doesn't have a problematic, negative history is a sucky way of engaging with and examining a piece of media so let's not do that.
aaanyway, to the actual meat of this post: i believe malevolent reiterates the monstrous queer / queer-coded villain tropes however unintentionally and they go unexamined in the text.
first, we have kayne. flamboyant, exaggerated kayne who calls arthur—and to an extent john—pet names. i don't really think i have to go into detail for people to know what i'm getting at.
then we have larson. yeah, larson. in particular, i'm referring to the scene where arthur wakes up in the larson estate and his clothes have been removed. larson approaches arthur while he's in bed, vulnerable, and while there's not anything untoward happening in the text, it's still very ... master of the house and the gothic heroine, for lack of a better comparison. actually, think of count dracula and jonathan harker in castle dracula — the dynamic is very reminiscent of that, and dracula is a famously queer coded monster in part for that whole thing.
and finally, there's the butcher. a predator—a serial killer—obsessed with chasing arthur down. and boy did part 34 lay it down thick. i mean, he hears peggy gordon in his head when he hunts arthur and sings it to him when he's come to get him. it's a song about a man's unrequited love and it's pretty obvious the butcher's meant to be the man while arthur is peggy, who slighted him when he escaped from the butcher back in the train. and then as if that wasn't obvious enough he has a line about falling in love with his victims. "it's dedication, devotion, a bond. (laugh) sounds a bit like falling in love, doesn't it? maybe i suppose you could say i've fallen in love with each and every one of them. with each and every animal." which is then followed by more arthur-specific obsessing.
harlan has explicitly stated that arthur isn't queer rep, so unintentionally what's happening in the text is that the heterosexual protagonist is pitted against these queer-coded malevolent entities in a way that's pretty text book.
none of these characters i used as examples are written to be explicitly queer, but the coding is certainly there. again, i'm not saying harlan is a secret queerphobe who is putting this subtext in malevolent intentionally—i can with confidence say that we can safely assume that isn't the case! but, like i said when i was prefacing this post, queer subtext in the monstrous and villainous have a recorded history within horror. it's really easy to reiterate tropes like that if you create within a genre without actively examining your work and its wider context, and i think that's what happening here.
so what was the point of this post? there isn't much of one, really, i just made an observation and wanted to share because i believe in and enjoy examining the things you love critically. and i do love malevolent, with its queer-coded villains and all. i'm not calling for anything to change in the story, or accusing harlan or anyone else of anything; i'm just having thoughts about the wider scope of horror media and where malevolent fits within it and i'm using a cda and queer theory oriented brain to do it.

Memories of Us Chapter 2 || Masterlist
Literally posting the first two parts and then passing out lol, same tags as last time, same inspiration from this art by @cheesy-cryptid , same everything basically.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention. The chapter titles are based on the song "I Caught Fire" by The Used.
Thanks again to my babe @micropoe10 for being my beta reader and best friend ❤️
also tagging @satanicspinosaurus because they're the first person to ask to be tagged (!!!!) Thanks for the support guys, it means A LOT.
Chapter 2
Could stay a while
Gale gave Octavia the very secret directions to the restaurant she was due to meet her boss in. It was a fancy place in the Upper City, secluded enough for only those who knew where it was could find it. Looking down at the piece of paper with the code to enter, she knocks on the door. A voice comes out of nowhere, loudly asking, "PASSWORD?" Nervously she speaks the phrase on the paper, instantly the door opens and the piece of paper is gone. "Wow, they really don't want people to know about this place huh?" "I would assume not, some of us do pay quite a bit of gold for the exclusivity." A haughty voice speaks out from behind her, a blush quickly develops on her cheeks as the realization crosses that she was not alone.
She quickly stammers "Oh it's my first time here, I was more surprised than anything." She chuckles at her own expense. The man behind her is cloaked in the light of a street lantern directly behind them. "Well, I hope you enjoy it, they say the first time is incredibly memorable..." The last word spills out with a sultry drawl, he walks past her and into the hallway, eventually fading into the darkness of the restaurant. The blush on her cheeks has definitely covered her entire face now.
Octavia takes a few breaths. Then steps into the dark restaurant. The interior of the establishment is lowly lit, almost completely dark, save for the candles on the tables and sconces on the walls. She looks around to the other patrons, all impeccably dressed in clothes that look like they would cost at least 5 months pay.
"This way, miss." Octavia is led to a private room towards the back, the waitress knocks on the red wooden door in front of them, a voice that sounds like Gale's calls out "I think she's here, let me go greet her!"
Gale comes out in a much nicer suit than his usual one, slightly fitted for a guy who you only see in cardigans and loose sweaters. "Okay, now I definitely feel underdressed, is there a dress code here that someone forgot to inform me about?" Octavia jokes, "Because if I had a reason to go buy a new wardrobe with my graduation money, it would've been good to know."
Gale looks at her slightly confused until he notices her wearing practically the same outfit she wore to work, the only exception was her blazer, it wasn't the one he accidentally spilled ink on when they were restoring some letters together earlier in the day.
He sucks his teeth and apologizes "I absolutely did, and I'm not sure how to make up for it yet, but I promise you look wonderful. You have your talents and expertise to speak for themselves! No amount of lavish clothing can eclipse that. Besides, Mr. Ancunin trusts me much more than anyone else. He and I have talked at great lengths about your impressive knowledge of the Heroes of Baldur's Gate. He's made remarks about it, seeming like you've been there yourself!" He laughs as he leads her into the room, would this be the time to tell him her family history?
As she approaches the table, a shadow becomes clear and his form begins to take shape. His hands are the first thing she sees come out from behind the cloak around his shoulders; slender fingers with a spider like length, lustrous skin like pearls, one reaches out and takes hers in a handshake. "My my..Made your way over from outside, darling?" That voice sounded like the man from outside."How was the walk over? Not too far in the back are we? I wanted to make sure our meeting was nice and private."
The waitress who led her down to this room lights a few more candles, replacing some that had apparently gone out. The barely lit room fills with warm yellow light and her boss becomes more illuminated by each one.
Octavia notices his hair first, a mop of silver and white styled into a messy tousle of curls. His ears were pointed, the few rings of hair that fell on them perfectly encircled around as if on purpose. She noticed something particular though, he was wearing sunglasses inside? In this dark place?
Before she even knew, she asked "Why are you wearing sunglasses inside at night?" Taken aback, her boss laughs loudly as he looks towards Gale, "You were right, cheeky little pup, isn't she?"
His grin grows mischievously. Gale shrugs and pulls the chair out in front of him, he motions Octavia to sit. She makes her way over and takes her spot, Gale sitting to her right. "Miss Octavia, I would be honored to finally introduce you to our esteemed head curator of the Baldur's Gate Museum of History, Mr. Astarion Ancunin."
Gale flourishes the last bit by extending his arm out to his right, Astarion dips his head in a small bow. "I do apologize for the last minute absence, my dear" he sips his wine and places the glass down.
"I believe you're both reaping the benefits of that excursion in the hard work you've been doing. Which is the cause of this little outing I've set up for the three of us. Obviously, I wanted to meet you beforehand, Octavia, but some things have to be sacrificed for the good of preservation. I take this work very seriously, I want to ensure these priceless artifacts don't get lost to time, as some things have before." He takes a slow sip of his wine, "I believe Gale has told you about his little interest in our Szarr art collection?"
Astarion playfully asks Octavia, as he turns to Gale, a devilish smile on his face, sipping more wine. "He has, actually, but I asked." she answers "Really? And what do you make of this mystery subject? You must have a theory, yes?" He places a hand under his chin, turning to look at her behind those dark lenses.
Octavia feels the same chill she felt when she first looked at the painting on the wall. She gulps,"Uh not yet, but I'm curious as well...the subject looks like a male elf, maybe about 40? No more than 100 it seems..."
She trails off a little, looking down at the table. "Whomever they were, they seem important somehow, like they were a favorite or something? A favored consort, possibly? I'm hoping that after Gale and I are done with this project, we may be able to find out?" She fidgets with her fingers a little under the table, hearing a pleased hum she straightens up and looks to Gale. He has a giant smile on his face, and gives her a reassuring nod.
A silence falls on the table as they turn to look at Astarion, his eyebrows come together.. he seems angry, perhaps annoyed, was he upset at her speculation? Her heart was in her throat, where was the waitress? She needed water and quick- "Why do you think that?" Astarion asks pointedly, taking a more prominent drink of his wine. "Why do you think that one is favored?"
Octavia feels a lump at her throat, she swallows and answers "They're in a lot of paintings in the gallery...I noticed them in at least a dozen...in the forefront of four, the background of 6...the main subject of two..it's quite a lot for someone who doesn't matter.." She hears a soft huff, not annoyed this time. "Interesting. Most people say that he's pretty or gorgeous or go on about his beautiful body, but you focused on the importance of the subject. I admire your insight, Octavia. I see why Gale tipped the scales for you."

[okay i really love this one. ancient history's so james core its about a traumatic past that you can't help but let color your existence. like james, the singer feels defined by what's happened to them because of how much it still hurts them. he tries to move on, but he's trapped in cycles.]
Tumblr media
[sayid jarrah - the wolf]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[well someone sure thinks they're a monster. the singer of the wolf sees themself as something dangerous and violent, something that will inevitably hurt the people they care about. both the singer & sayid feel like they're trapped in cycles that just hurt themself and others.]
Tumblr media
[hugo "hurley" reyes - volta]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[very much a song about mental health. specifically it's about improving, finally deciding to do something about what you've been through. fundamentally volta's a song about hope & making a change for yourself in a way that's super reminiscent of hurley.]
Tumblr media
[sun-hwa & jin-soo kwon - curses]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[okay yes i know all the rest of the characters got their own separate songs and all but 1. sun & jin's arcs are so heavily defined by each other in a way unique to them, and 2. curses is so incredibly them i dont want to pass it up. the two struggle to find the words for each other, to be open about what weighs on them and their secrets, to the point it nearly destroys their relationship. but, in the end, the two still stay together, they still try to improve their relationship.]
Tumblr media
[charlie pace - the garden]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[the garden is in large part a song about catholic guilt. need i say more? it doesn't matter because i will. charlie feels incredibly guilty over his past and his actions, but struggles to respond to that guilt, instead stewing in self-hate and fear.]
Tumblr media
[claire littleton - here i am]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[claire forever feels abandoned. in her flashbacks and by people on the island, she is always left behind by the people she cares about, until she feels like her loneliness is forcd to define her in season 6.]
Tumblr media
[desmond hume - little soldiers]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[little soldiers is extremely despen coded. desmond insists that he cares about penny, but fears that after everything, he's hurt her too bad. and yet, him and penny still try, they still put in the work to improve and stay together.]
Tumblr media
[aight thats all i can fit for now ill add a part two in a bit]

I think we (kaylors) slept on Timeless a bit, because it got so overshadowed by the horny gay masterpiece that is ICSY. But I love this beautiful heartfelt song so much, and I think, if any Taylor Swift song could be a wedding song, it would be this one. And that made me think…
We know this song is not from speak now era originally, it was listed on an earlier reputation track list and then removed, so it’s essentially a rep vault track. Had it been on reputation, the parallels and references would have been obvious:
The narrator and lover's first meeting: “time stood still/in a crowded room a few short years ago” = Delicate and Dress (dive bar, touching hands in dark rooms, secret moment in a crowded room)
Romeo & Juliet reference: “story of a romance torn apart by fate” -> Love Story (Karlie’s favourite song and caption of their first ever public photo together)
In addition to the above: "I'd die for you in the same way" is reminiscent of peace (I'd die for you in secret), but also generally really meaningful when you think about queer couples throughout history and how some of them would have payed for their love with their lives. She's willing to risk it all for this love.
“Run away and left it all behind” = CIWYW (“would you run away with me” “yes”)
“Sometimes there’s no proof you just know” = No proof, not much, but you saw enough (YAIL)
“We’ll have a cardboard box of photos of the life we’ve made” - Karlie is a well known collector of polaroid photos and allegedly keeps them in a safe deposit box.
“You’ll say ‘Oh my, we really were timeless” Now this reminds me of Mary’s song because of the ‘oh my’. Mary’s song is a similar friends to lovers story of two people growing up, falling in love and then getting married and having children in that very same place. In this last verse Taylor is describing growing old with her lover and looking back on their lives together. Big ‘don’t read the last page, but I stay’ vibes. Also just cute that she mirrors her little childhood fantasy of marrying a childhood friend with her own friends to endgame lovers story 🥰
And lastly, the whole ‘what if’ concept of the song seems like something you’d do if you’re...say... a closeted celebrity. Wondering if you'd have an easier life if you were 'normal people'. I can imagine post-2016 election Taylor and Karlie in their little love blackout bubble doing this mental exercise, because when things suck, it must be temping to imagine how much easier it would be 'if only'... Would we even have met if we were normal people? Of course we would have, because we were destined to find each other in every universe and against all hardship, including this one. Song concept born :) The 'you're worth all the hardship' sentiment is also very Slut!-coded, aka 'if they slut-shame me, it might as well be worth it for once'. The way the chorus changes to list all the potential difficulties ("headed off to fight in the war/ forced to marry another man") also makes it clear that it really doesn't matter what challenge comes at them, they'll be together regardless. Come hell or high water (or in their case, contractual obligations or beards with dodgy political ties) we will end up together. So, bottom line, it's a really beautiful kaylor song and probably one that gets forgotten because it was on Speak Now tv.
Happy fortnight until TPD, guys! 😉

"Forgive me, for all the things I did but mostly for the ones that I did not."
- The Secret History, Donna Tartt
The anxiety overwhelmed Lucy as soon as they stepped into the house on their latest case. She swayed dangerously, and her lips parted in surprise, but her grip on the doorframe was enough to steady her. Lockwood's head snapped back reflexively.
"Alright, Luce?"
Lucy nodded weakly, taking a deep breath in.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to linger."
He didn't look fully convinced.
With the days getting shorter and her mind wandering to less-than-favourable places over the past few days, she wasn't in the best emotional shape, even for a flimsy Type One. They walked in further, and the malaise grew stronger. Somewhere to her left, George fidgeted uncomfortably, but it was clear that neither of them had picked up the shift in the air like she had. Lucy closed her eyes. Happy thoughts.
She thought about her sisters, or what she could barely remember of the misshapen motley crew from her earliest days. She thought about the days before she Listened to ghosts, when she listened to the wavering hum of some distant dragonfly skimming over the tops of forbidden ponds. She thought about Norrie, and her team, and how excited they were on the night of their grade three certification. Lucy had been dizzy with glee and whatever was in the drink Norrie had given her, her hand drifting to the hilt of her rapier whenever the conversation ebbed. She couldn't stop smiling. For a moment she felt on top of the world, even if by only two inches. It was something she had earned, something hers to keep.
Then there was the Wythburn Mill incident. She jerked out a hand, trying to regain some grasp on the present as she traced the rough wall, trembling as her mind carried her onwards despite her efforts. That ominous premonition she had felt that day began to swell in her stomach, the feeling that had bred her knee-jerk reaction in the following weeks of considering any sort of malaise synonymous to the siren of death. Even now, if she wasn't too careful at times, she'd struggle to choke out the words to Lockwood and George when she would get too swept away in that unpleasant paralysis.
Her mother had been less than forgiving, which was nothing new. But what she hadn't expected was the cold dread and debilitating survivor's guilt that followed, as the bustling, rosy faces of what was left of her sisters had faded into obscurity. For three days, she had laid in her bed, silent as stone, and on the fourth day she had decided that she could bear this house no longer. She remembered cracking open her bedroom window one last time before leaving, breathing in the distinctly frigid, sterile Northern morning air. There was nothing, not even a single dragonfly, to pierce through the thick quiet.
As she walked away from her home without so much as a backwards glance, some part of her was painfully aware of how deeply ironic it was that she never felt quite as comfortable anywhere as she was whilst leaving. It was a realisation that weighed on her mind even after joining Lockwood & Co, the bogeyman that underpinned her rhythmic yet devoid-of-comfort routine. After every case, every agonised visitor launching themselves at them, she was left with an even stronger turbulence. What was she doing this all for? What happened next? And when would it all end?
The hollow vacuum following the questions was shattered by the spark of a flare that stung the side of Lucy's face. Her mind jumped back to the present, and she fumbled with her rapier for half a second. George lets out a strangled cry and half a minute later, they've bagged the source and the excitement's come to an end.
But on the way home, it felt like the Lurker hadn't truly been put to rest. Lucy ruminated on events she hadn't thought about in months. But one thing was clear: all the roads she's ever taken and all the roads she would take would lead her back to this exact spot - alone. Perhaps it was something implicit in her DNA: Lucy Carlyle did not seem to possess the genetic makeup for love.
It's these thoughts that she's too wrapped up in to pay more than a superficial level of attention to the others. She tosses and turns in bed until she gives up, deciding that a cup of tea was just what she needed.
As she walks down from the attic, there's a rustling in the shadows of the moonlit library. Faint glimmers on dull photographs materialise fleetingly as the figure erratically flips through plastic albums with a feverish intensity. The floorboard creaks as she shifts her weight, making his head snap up. She sees the vague outline of his rigid spine and crossed legs, poised to attack, as if they were still in that house. She steps out of the shadow of the door.
"Luce." He visibly relaxes, but there's still a troubled strain to his gaunt face. "Something wrong?"
"Couldn't sleep, is all."
Lockwood is already unfolding his legs to make room for Lucy as she walks in to sit next to him. He lamely tries to half-close the album, which awkwardly slips off his lap. His mildly pleasant expression does little to distract her from the aggrieved look in his eye. No matter how much he insisted otherwise, she could tell there were times when he felt no bigger or stronger than the small and vulnerable boy forced to grow up uncomfortably fast to fill shoes two sizes too big. They sit in silence for a while, and she argues with herself on how to reach out. She wants to hold his hand and tell him that everything would be alright. She wants him to believe her. She wants to take care of him in a way that matters.
"Do you ever wonder, about your family?"
But a want is a wish, some unrealised dream hovering at the edge of reality. The question catches her off guard, rendering her momentarily speechless. Her mind clouds over with a blurry sort of rage and that alienating grief she's carried with her all the way from Cheviot Hills. She stands up, and a part of Lockwood retreats into himself. There's an injured expression on his face.
"Go to bed, Lockwood." She wishes she knew how to convince him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the morning Lockwood's restless and mopey and an utter pain to deal with. George barely manages to get through breakfast, after which he washes his hands of him and grumbles something about going to the Archives. The last time Lucy had seen him as disagreeable as this was when Holly had placed him on house arrest when she reached her limit with his hacking cough and runny nose. The blow might not have been so terrible, perhaps, if he hadn't had to watch the rest of them continue with their cases without them.
"A whole week, Luce," he had said, with watering eyes and a nose rubbed raw, when George and Holly were away on a case. Of the three of them, Lucy was surprisingly the most sympathetic to his plight, but only because she understood the agony of being cooped up. "What am I supposed to do for a week?"
"I don't know. Have a rest, maybe? Relax, read a book, like a normal person?"
He laughed bitterly, staring out the window with his back turned to her. It makes him look vaguely unfamiliar. "I'm happier out there than I could ever be in here."
An uncomfortable silence follows, littered with the muffled sounds of the sleepy traffic outside their windows. She knew he didn't mean it. She hoped he didn't mean it. He turned to stare at a picture frame on his nightstand defiantly.
"I don't want to waste the life I've left staying shut up inside when I could be out there, making it all...worth it. Worth something."
He hadn't clarified, and she hadn't needed him to. She sees him, six years old, far too young to be forging an enemy fused to his lifeblood for the next fifteen years. She sees the grief, the anger, the thirst for vengeance, for retribution over what was stolen from him. She sees the tarnished walls closing in on him and the way their history weighs on him. A memory of what he can't let go of but is already forgetting, if the tremble in his hands as he flipped through the photo album had been any indication.
But she pretends she doesn't see any of it, because that's easier than figuring out what to do with the rage that flickers inside her.
"You're being awfully dramatic over a...a week."
He had rolled his eyes, peeling away the hair plastered to his clammy forehead. "You'd be too if George kept trying to boil you alive with blankets."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, a cold silence settles over 35 Portland Row. She finds him in the living room, and she thinks she's done a wonderful job at sneaking in until his rough voice startles her.
"I didn't mean to upset you last night." He seems astonishingly fragile and wholly disinterested, brooding at the window. It gives her a sickening feeling of deja vu. "I can really put my foot in it."
"S'alright."
He continues to stare lifelessly out the window, long enough to stir some urgency in Lucy. She isn't sure how to make it better, but knows she can make it worse. It holds her back.
"Well, if you ever wanted to...talk..."
She couldn't go any further. How could she, when she and the unfeeling Northern air were one and the same? But with Lockwood...she wanted to ache for him, cry for him. He speaks to the window pane aggressively.
"What?"
"George and I-"
He exhales derisively, and her quick temper rears its ugly head.
"It's not our fault you're an emotionally stunted twat-"
"Like you're any better."
"We're trying our best-"
"Then why won't you listen for longer than two seconds?"
Some mild reaction must have passed over her face, because the anger in Lockwood's face instantly softens. He sighs restlessly.
"I don't understand you, Luce. You can act so...brusque, and cold...but sometimes I look at you and...I don't believe it."
Her voice is a strained wisp of breath and she feels as small as she did when she was eight years old. She feels dangerously unbalanced, disfigured and grotesque.
"I'm...harsh. Unforgiving."
"Lucy, that's a lie and you know it."
"I'm only brave when it's easy. I'm a wreck when it gets tough."
"Infiltrating Winkman's operation was a far cry from easy."
"I'm so afraid, Lockwood. I'm terrified. All the time."
"Even with me?"
She doesn't know how to put into words how hard she tries to love him. She'll yell at him until she's blue in the face, but it is always with aching eyes that she looks at his sallow face and thinks I want him to be happy. With Lockwood, it was never about being loved; rather, she would succumb to the clawing desperation to love. If only she knew how.
"I'm afraid...I'm nothing you want."
He finally tears his eyes from the window, slowly turning to face her, and his expression is one of complete surprise. If she wasn't so close to tears she would have felt half-compelled to laugh.
"I don't know how to do it. Any of it. I want to know when you're okay and when you're not and I want to know what the hell I'm supposed to do when you shut yourself up but these are all things I've never known and...I don't have a bloody clue."
"Nothing...I...want?" he echoes. "Luce...you're incredible."
She picks up a cushion and aims for his head, which he smoothly catches, much to her irritation. He tosses it aside and slowly, carefully, wraps his knobbly arms around her. He holds her delicately, resting his cheekbone on her head, his breath tickling her fringe.
"Sometimes...I think I might be a little too in over my head thinking about everything I've lost. It makes me forget what I have now."
There's a thin strain in his voice towards the end of the sentence, and Lucy picks up on the emotion rattling in his chest. She wraps her own arms around him, caving in. He gives a shaky laugh.
"Maybe...maybe we possess some deficiency that make us entirely inept at caring for each other. Isn't that funny, Luce? Downright...hilarious?"
She closes her eyes and breathes in, humming noncommittally. For a moment there, she feels warm.

I just feel like rambling about Maroon
This was all sparked by rusty telephone lyric:
The mark thеy saw on my collarbone. The rust that grew bеtween telephones. The lips I used to call home. So scarlet, it was maroon.
The rust that grew between telephones made me think of the whole theme of reputation “the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now why cause she’s dead.” From LWYMMD. The era where Taylor literally wiped her entire social media hiding memories.
Coming back to Maroon. The entire song is an us vs. them narrative. The first half of the chorus is us. And the second half is them. And the verses are all just we. And the pre chorus + the bridge explain the story.
Verse 1 ends with “I see you everyday now” and leads into “I chose you”
Verse 2 ends with “the rubies that I gave up” and leads into “and I lost you” but the entire second verse is about the silence we agreed on.
The bridge is about the memory still being there but she had to let go of that story. That legacy we had to leave behind to move forward.
Idk why I’m in the mood to ramble about this.
I just think “I chose you. I lost you because I had to erase us.” Is the story. I lost that version of us.
The song is the same as New Year’s Day and gold rush. Songs about giving up the memories in exchange for a new reality where they are still together just not with the same public history. Not because of a break up but because you can’t use the old narrative. The love is still there.
Also
I know this has come up before Idr where but “The rubies that I gave up” makes me think of the Ruby coding language. And it makes me think the lyrics are a play on words tied to giving up memories to make room for new ones. Idk here’s a gif of Karlie saying Ruby is her favorite coding language.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I just learned that Rust is also a programming language. So the “rust that grew between telephones” lyric also feels like a play on a secret language to communicate after they caught on.
This is very rambly. I just like Maroon as a song and I like the idea of it being extremely layered.

"go listen to actual queer actists music" this "why are you so desperate need your stan to be gay" that, or even "gaylor is such a white gay thing", but how abt repressed (and depressed) queers of color relate to taylor swifts music?
i cant speak for all but i can speak for myself. im a gaylor who grew up in asian. ofc i listen to openly queer and unapologetically queer artists like fletcher, janelle monáe, lil nas x, miley cyrus, hayley kiyoko, lady gaga, etc etc, but i (and some of my close asian gaylor friends) also live in an extremely homophobic society where queerness is even banned in public, let alone openly talking abt or showing queerness in real life. sometimes those openly queer artists' work just arent necessarily our queer experience. enter taylor swift. her music is SO relatable to closeted/semi-closeted queer ppl. maybe im not white, but those self-doubting, those secret loves and heartbreaks, those depressions, those disprovals from parents and society in taylor swifts music, they are so queer. they are so relatable so familiar, they are so me, they are so us. takes one to know one, right? so ofc we became gaylors. she def sings abt us. she def knows abt our type of queer struggles and also our type of queer joy. and we get to learn all those queer history no one could teach us abt! what a nice thing to have an online fandom like that!
the question should never be "why dont you(gaylors) go listen to actual queer actists music?" but it should be "why cant you(hetlors) just acknowledge the undoubted queerness in taylor swift music?" (also, the RIGHT question for queer hetlors, "who do you think queer-code those taylor swifts songs?????")
the question should never be "why are you so desperate need your stan to be gay", but "why cant you see her?????"
the question should never be "gaylor is such a white gay thing" but "you DO know there are queers of color gaylors out there right??!!?!"
i will always be thinking and criticizing taylors colonialism problem in wildest dream mv, or the exploitation of women of color in shake it off mv, or her CO2 emissions, shes a rich white billionaire after all. but criticizing those problems doesnt mean queers of color cannot or will not relate to her work. bit racist dont you think???? cuz us queers of color gaylors are literally here.

I was just listening to suburban legends and, first thing first, what and absolute total banger. I genuinely cannot understand why I did not listen to this song more often. And second, the lyrics are like, really queer-coded.
The one that really called my attention was "1950s gymnasium". Now, if you dont know that, in the 1950s the lavander scare, a process where queer people where maked to be outcast on the society by the goverment, took place. People needed to hide and did not really know who to trust (since the people caught "guilty" were force by torture and manipulation to give names or other queer people), it was really a strugle. She says she is "standing in a 1950s gymnasium" like, trying to survive the scrutiny and navigaiting her life not knowing who to trust about her true self alongside other queer people. All together in one place, practicing not getting caught (and we all now that era was when Taylor was really bad at hiding her alleged relationships with women)
Then, theres the chorus. I didnt come here to make friends, when would you need to clarify that in a straight scenario? Almost never and, based on the lyrics, I dont think thats the case. And then the "you kissed me on a way thats gonna screw me up forever" its really deep if we read it as queer. Taylor queerness was an obstacle to her career, something that should be hidden and secretive because the consecuences of it being know were too catastrofic (like in the 1950s). Her queerness could screw her career and dreams forever, so that kiss (that I think represents her whole relationship with the muse) could screw her up forever, everything she has worked for could go away because of who she was in love with. Yet, when she hold her, it hold her together, so it was worth it.
Now in the second verse, there are (appart from the 1950s lyrics) a few things that caught my attention. First, the fantasy she has about surprising everyone with their mismatched sings, its a fantasy because it cannot happen. Its not posible, that is why it is a fantasy. Second, theres the lyric, "You'd be more than a chapter in my old diaries with the pages ripped out" she says "You'd" as in a way of hoping, like saying: if our love was not something we have to hide you will be more than a than a chapter in my old diaries with the pages ripped out. Now, this thing about ripping of pages of a diary is honestly heartbreaking. She feels so afraid, she needs to hide that much that she even erased any prove of her love from her diaries, one of the most personal things anyone could ever own, were you pour your feeling to yourself and yourself only; she could not even trust her diaries to keep her love secret.
To finish, we have to tie it all to the title: suburban legends. A history that everyones knows yet no one can tell if it is or not true, because there us no proof. It could be real or not, but everyone has heard of it. Taylor saying her and her muse were born to be suburban legends insinuates that the relationships she is singing about was secret, very few people knew that it existed for real (bacause it was not safe) but everyone heard the rumors about it.
Disclaimer: this is just my interpretation and by sharing this I am not saying this is the truth or that Taylor said that to me or something like that. I am just reading and analising the art she putted out there.

Polls will start to be posted within the next week or so.
Bracket list under the cut!
UPDATE: LIST CANCELLED
*Starred shows have multiple theme songs or I have combined shows in a franchise in an effort to include as much as possible. These will have preliminaries built-into their polls on the first round. This is how it works: 1. all of the songs will go into a poll together against one other show; 2. the COMBINED votes for those songs will determine which show wins that poll; 3. only the top voted song for that show/franchise will move on, if the show has won the poll. (If you are confused it will make more sense when we start, I promise!)
