JB Smut Swap 2023 Rec List

The die has called it: I’m here to share 14 fics from the 2023 JB Smut Swap that I particularly loved and think people need to read if they haven’t already. I’m far too indecisive to declare them the best, or rank them, but I try to recommend fics with premises people might not be drawn to or I haven’t seen talked about much, that sort of thing. So here they are, in no particular order:

Look, I had a whole post reccing my gift, Ghost in the Machine and its Coda. But I have to rec it again. It’s emotional and hot and so, so good. Don’t let the warnings deter you on this, it is very much worth a read.

Smoke and Mirrors - I loved, loved, loved the rhythm of this. Kitchen competence, pegging, and a sensory delight 

chains around my demons (wool to brave the seasons) - the worldbuilding in this is just wonderful, and the smut is tender and hot. Forehead touches and laughter and a really compelling world to lose yourself in for 1500 words.

what she'd do to me tonight - bodyguard/politician AU with a secret relationship and playful power dynamics with an underlying respect. What’s not to like? 

Lovely Lady May - another story with a distinctive narrative style, a luscious, rolling rhythm that plays with the roles both Jaime and Brienne fulfil to each other and the wider society they live in. And heaven knows that’s a weakness of mine. 

You Hold Me Together - POST FIGHT CARETAKING! POST FIGHT CARETAKING! POST FIGHT CARETAKING!

Sweater Weather - An atmospheric mod AU with Jaime, Brienne, water, and the bittersweetness of having to co-parent. The sex is totally smoking, but it’s all the ways they make space for each other that really stole my heart

 just crossed swords on the killing floor - I knew I was screwed from the Thomas Crown Affair AU tag, but man. I WAS REALLY SCREWED. The language, the emotions, the steaming hot [redacted]. It is, as of this posting, a WIP but that just means you can read it twice. 😂

Knight Club - I can be real hit and miss with dubcon, but the very harsh gender stuff in this just pulled me in and kept me engrossed. It’s dark, but if that’s your jam it’s 17K of utterly compelling dark 

yes, and - Look, nobody who knows me is surprised this one is on the list. Gentle femdom and mouthy Jaime and well-negotiated kink? Even before the very clever callbacks to canon and the delightful image of Brienne in Regency menswear I was doomed

so all the world can see - If breeding kink is your thing, this is great, and if breeding kink isn’t your thing… well, it’s still great. It’s soft and sweet and feels authentic

What You Want - Jaime in a suit and heels, waiting for Brienne? I love fics that play with gender presentation, and this one was funny and hot so #winning 

Figure It Out - Exes meet at a party, fuck in a bathroom, there’s a mirror, I mean, honestly, that sort of sells itself, doesn’t it? 

I’m cheating here. The exchange had TWO Beauty and the Beast AUs: Certain as the sun includes Brienne as the beast and a quest for revenge, and by fang and claw is a beast!Jaime with some delicious riding of the dubcon line. It was fascinating to see the same story, one that is already woven into canon, told in different ways. So it gets to count as one rec

And so here we are at the end of the list and I’m still dithering and thinking of other stories that could have been chosen. So if these didn’t whet your appetite, make sure to check out the whole collection!

NMTDaily: VOX POPS

- Hi all! I’m going to be rewatching along with TCWs NMTDaily and making posts about each episode, or as many as I can (I might miss some, but I hope not!)

- I want to start by saying thank you again to The Candle Wasters for making my favorite thing. Just, the amount of joy and creative fulfillment and friendship and delight I’ve gotten from this show and this fandom is still unmatched. Thank you so much for making it and sharing it. The love and care and skill with which NMTD was made still shines through and I’m still so awed by it. I think I was probably somewhat overdramatic about my reactions to Lolilo in places where you, TCW, could see, on my main blog, and you didn’t deserve that. I really hope I didn’t send you any aggressive asks about it, or make you uncomfortable in any way. I’m a little afraid I did, but I don’t know for sure. If I did, I apologize. I’m older and more mature now, I promise. I hope you’re all doing so very well now!

- I didn’t realize until today that Project I: VOX POPS was posted first, before any other video in the series. I didn’t start watching NMTD until right around the time Benedick’s first Q&A video was posted, so I binged the first chunk of episodes around that time. It will be interesting to watch them at a slower pace this time!

- I am immediately overwhelmed with warm fuzzies at seeing these characters again. They’re such babies! I love them!

- I never made a post about this, but Ben’s first line being about how he shares a (differently spelled) name with a Pope is both a great first line for him on a character level since he starts as kind of a cocky overconfident asshole (a cover for his soft sensitive insides) AND it’s evidence for my theory that he’s probably Catholic, but lapsed/non-practicing/maybe agnostic or atheist solely because I WILL keep projecting parts of me onto this character, it’s just what I do at this point. Other evidence: he has a confirmation name. We don’t get his full name til Lolilo, but still. And he’s partly Scottish, which can account for the fact that English people usually are not Catholic.

- “you need to imitate an eagle, that’ll scare them away!” That’s Ben’s second line and first bird reference! Already! Wow.

- The favorite band question! Mumford and Sons! Fife and the Drums! Sheep Dog and Wolf! The LORE! The REFERENCES! We’re already off to the races.

- “I don’t need chat-up lines” Beatrice I love you , and you have no idea what’s coming.

- I forgot about Beatrice’s Favorite T-Shirts Ranking System lol

- Extremely funny that Ben says bananas are his favorite food and then he goes on to become synonymous with mangoes instead. Sorry, buddy, you will always be Mango Skin Boy to us. xD

- I forgot how delightful Dogberry and Verges are in this episode

- “that you would leave me” oh Meg. Oh honey. Oh no.

- I’ve seen nine seasons of Doctor Who and only five episodes of Game of Thrones since 2014. Sorry Bea, I side with Ben on this one. And I’ve seen one season of Community. I’m slowly hacking away at the list of media referenced in nmtd that I need to watch!

- love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you, it will set you free! ❤️

- Balthazar plays every instrument, of course.

- Bea must not have an ear for music if she hated that question enough to force Ursula on-camera so she doesn’t have to answer it… Unless Ursula asked her something else she didn’t want to answer! Lol

- Ben makes me cringe so hard a couple times this episode. And yet I still love him. To be fair, that’s just every Benedick at the start of Much Ado, though. The cringy lines are completely in character.

- I decided to save the full story of how I discovered NMTD for whenever the NMTDaily email for Ben’s first Q&A episode goes out, because then it will actually be ten years almost to the day since I started watching. But I’m so impatient and excited to tell the story!

- It’s amazing how back then, these kids were my contemporaries and the Lizzie Bennet Diaries cast felt impossibly old compared to me. Now the NMTD kids are babies and I’m older than Lizzie Bennet! Trippy. It sure has been a nice ten years.

It's really hard to believe that this is already over.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I'm in awe of the creativity and passion of this community. As of writing this I can see 80+ fics in our AO3 collection and 40+ incredible pieces of artwork (of which I need to go back and tag more from day 1)! And with more to come - from people completing their WIPs past this date, to fics inspired by art and vici-versa, this blog will continue to be active as needed.

So... now what?

If you're looking for a last-minute prompt for today, we can recommend plenty of ways to get some (random) inspiration! Given the success of this celebration, we hope to give Perc'ahlia Week another shot next year! As for the rest of the prompts... well, it's a bit too early to start planning yet, but I can say there are plenty of excellent ideas for prompts going forward and we hope to make a poll to iron out the final list. Hey there! Just wanted to drop by and gush about how much I adore your tangled fics! I've been a reader for quite a while, and I've noticed a delightful shift in your style and character focus lately—totally loving it!

It's genuinely refreshing to witness writers evolving and trying out new things within the fandom. I'm genuinely thrilled that you're still in the game. Hoping you stick around for the long haul!

On another note, I'd love to know what's cookin' in your creative kitchen. What's on your plate in terms of current works in progress or any future fics you're plotting? I remember you posting about it a while back, but, alas, my search skills failed me.

Major kudos for being such an incredible wordsmith! Can't wait for the next chapter (of literally any of your fics).

I think it has helped working with @tangledbea for Between the Kisses and my writing has slowly begun to improve from reading through her edits of BTK and then incorporating my new knowledge into other stuff I am writing to improve my own writing skills.

I have always enjoyed getting into characters and sometimes I can find it very difficult to get into the heads of certain characters!

I have no intention of leaving this fandom - at least not for a long time! (It will be three years in 2024 since I fell deep into Tangled fandom!)

What's cookin' in my creative kitchen? Oh, I have lots of ideas... First and foremost will be Tangled: Between the Kisses and my solo project of The Lost Prince. I am thoroughly enjoying writing TLP and I have quite a few spin-off fics in the works for that universe! I will be revealing more of those ideas closer to Christmas! I will reveal though that the series itself will be called: The Dark Kingdom Twins!

Myself and @twotangledsisters are working on a ModernAU of Tangled called Our Undying Dream which isn't your usual ModernAU rewrite. It will hopefully be surprising and interesting and it does start in the Tangled film timeframe. We hope to be able to share this fic soon but we want to completely write it first before we publish it. Due to our other projects, we work on it when we can.

My other works is a Team Awesome camping fic where Eugene and Varian are caught by bandits and when the bandits learn who Eugene is... well... he's in trouble and its up to Varian to save him! I hope to post this fic early next year. It should only be three chapters and the first chapter is drafted.

I am also working on two other stories.

The first is titled Uprising where Varian and the villagers of Old Corona rise up against the royal family at the end of season one! There is a twist in this fic which I hope will be surprising. At the moment, I'm not writing it due to other commitments, but it is on my list to write. Once the ModernAU and the Camping fic is done, Uprising will become a fic I will begin to focus on as I am really excited about this idea!

The second fic is one I have an idea for but no progress has been made yet. This is titled The Letter in the Lantern. What if Rapunzel had found the letter addressed to her during the Lantern ceremony? During 'I See The Light' I noticed that the lantern Rapunzel launches back into the air is the one her parents launched from the balcony! We know from the series that Frederic always wrote letters to Rapunzel. What if she found this letter? This fic will roughly be about 10 chapters and is on my list to write!

Ah see here's where I get to explain something fun because while I could also give folk music recs, what I was offering in the tags of that one post were filk music recs, which was not actually a typo.

Filk is basically the folk music of fandom -- which does not always mean it's about fiction or other nerdy topics, although it very often does. You'll hear it played at concerts or in music circles at some more old-school conventions, which is the context it first emerged in, although these days there are also virtual filk circles, filk podcasts (like FilkCast, which is a great place to find more filk if you like any of these recs), and music by filk musicians available on platforms like Bandcamp or Spotify -- or floating around on tumblr blogs like @filkyeahfilk. It's a really joyful and close-knit tradition with a very cool history and a lot of people making fun, funny, creative, moving, and clever music -- sometimes all at once -- mostly just for the sake of making music, no matter how weird or unpolished or niche

As for some recommendations coming to mind at the moment:

Dawson's Christian is an absolutely classic filk song (and space ghost story) with about a dozen versions out there at least. The version I linked is my favorite though, by Vixy & Tony

Talis Kimberley's song Kitchen Heroes wins in my book for having an excellent and extremely metal chorus about the importance of practical hand skills over, combat ones ("It's the stock and the cellar and the hearth and the hive / will decide who falls and who survives")

Beth Kinderman & the Player Characters are some friends of mine who make really phenomenal music; some of my favorites of theirs include Refusal of the Return (off a concept album inspired by/deconstructing the Hero's Journey), which has been giving me Big Luz Noceda Feelings for a while now, and The Dread Gazebo

Cheshire Moon are some other friends with really phenomenal stuff; I really like The Witch in Your Story, Banshee, and Build Your Wings

Oops We Split The Party by Clearly Guilty is a song that I feel very called out by as a D&D player, and also delightful

Heather Dale’s Mordred’s Lullaby is an amazing, haunting Arthurian legend inspired song and definitely liable to wedge itself into your brain and stay there in the best possible way

I always recommend Tim Griffin's Lucy on the Line to people with the warning that they WILL be crying by the end (for good and deeply hopeful reasons) -- which all the friends I have linked to to have admitted is exactly what happened. Absolutely give it a listen but maybe have, like, some tissues at the ready.

My fic year in review

@calaisreno tagged me, so here goes :-)

All in all this was a very creative year in fandom, and fandom was a much-needed source of joy and fun, even though I was recovering from a car accident, worked an insane amount, had Covid, and had a whole load of other RL issues. I'm so grateful to fandom, and writing, and reading fic, it helps so much to have an outlet like this, an escape hatch from RL when it gets too grim. Don't get me wrong, I've had worse years, but it was plenty stressful, and I'm glad I had fandom.

So here goes:

Total number of completed stories: 6 (though one of them is still posting, I completed it in 2022.)

Total word count: about 90k, plus about 10 k at least in unpublished drafts and snippets I'll never finish.

Fandoms written in: BBC Sherlock

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More, much more. I finished 2021 with a nasty case of writers' block, and I finished 6 stories this year. That's amazing, and I'm glad my flow is back.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Spare Parts because I got to say some stuff about Sherlock and John I always wanted to say, and I did a whole lot of world-building and plotting.

Did you take any writing risks this year? See above, I practially wrote a Sci-Fi novel.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? There's some stories I want to write, but I wouldn't call them goals. I'm also thinking of participating in FTH, but I'm not sure yet.

Most popular story of the year? Toss-up between Dont' Read the Last Page and All I Want for Christmas (Is Proof), apparetly you guys really like Sherlock and John wearing slutty Christmas outfits and sappy parentlock ;-)

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: My Hotel Transylvania AU Zing and You'll Miss It sank like a stone, but I had a lot of fun writing it ;-)

Spare Parts is super niche, so it didn't have the "mass appeal" that Bakers had while posting, but I think it'll find its audience, and if only Jrow, me and three other people like it, that's still plenty. I might still be crazy for wanting to write a sequel, but you guys, the amount of world-building I did, I barely scratched the surface. So. I'm not sure yet, but there might be a sequel. (or two, I have two really good ideas)

Most fun story to write: All three stories I wote for the Year of the Crackfic challenge were incedibly fun, especially Speak Now. It was pure wish fulfillment. Also, I stand by my theory that Mrs Hudson could take Mary in a fight.

Most unintentionally telling story: The Bakers ficlets for the Austrian traditions, probably.

Biggest disappointment: Spare Parts contains some conversations and some passages I'm insanely proud of, and I'm not getting that much of a reaction to the parts I really love, so... yeah. But hey, all is relative, and I'm insanely grateful to every single person who reads anything I write.

Biggest surprise: Every year, that people read and like my stuff. Thank you so much, every single one of you.

Also, the grumpy, hurt, bitter 24th century John Watson who kidnapped the rest of my writing year sometime in spring was a surprise as well ;-) This story wasn't even on the list of WIPS and then I was 5k in... (thanks, fake fic title challenge, and thanks, @whatnext2020 for the idea).

I have had plenty of my art stolen before—everything from people sharing it in Discord servers or on Pinterest without credit to selling items with my images printed on them on eBay, lolcry. However, I suspect this is probably a case of 'there are only so many nice gay porn photos on the internet.' XD I've come across a lot of other images in fandom and said to myself, "Oh I've used that ref, too!" And truthfully, it's not just limited to spicy stuff, but also images of guys cuddling; after a while, you start to run low on good quality shots of people with roughly the right builds, etc.

Also, I saw your second ask about having seen my pinned post, where it says I don't do commissions. So no worries!

Dear Readers,

Ive been reflecting.

While I'm old to the fandom I'm new to posting things about it. But nothing pleases me more, swells my heart fit to burst more than everyone's collective creativity.

It enraptures me, and admittedly makes me mildly jealous of the pure talent you all possess.

The heart breaking and healing words of fan fictions, can leave us desperate for the next chapter. The next set of problems to solve or answers to uncover. The way they transport us, even if briefly, into their worlds. Into their wounds. It's such a pure form of enjoyment, for the creators and consumers. Even if the content itself is far from pure!

Oh and the shapes and colours the artists conjour into delightful imagery! The time and tested skill they have procured to convey their ideas this way. I adore it. They go hand in hand with the wonderful words of fiction, bringing life to the carefully curated words. The blushing faces, the clasped hands and gentle curls. Oh how I could eat it all up!

And those crafty enough and confident enough to cosplay have my envy! Your ability to turn once useless items into exact replicas of items astounds me. The craftsman ship, the trouble shooting and vulnerability of your art is wonderful.

Now, dear readers, you too must take your bow apon the stage! For your encouragement, love and commentary makes it all worth while! You give us the courage to continue, to create. And we will always appreciate you.

Now, the sheer delight of it all is overwhelming at times! But I wouldn't trade a minute of it. Its made me laugh, cry and question my sanity, but its been there for me. You all have been there for me. And for that, for ever, I will be grateful.

Option 1: "I Know Places (We Won't Be Found)". Rated M.

Rey of Jakku is just trying to survive when a new spice runner comes to Niima.

He's handsomer than the last few, that's for sure - but Rey doesn't want to trust this good-looking stranger. She knows what can happen to girls who let their guards down: death, or something worse.

But, when Unkar Plutt forces her to help him with an odd search in the desert, Rey gets to know the mysterious spice runner a little more, and when he shows her a depth of kindness and warmth she's never experienced before, Rey starts to develop feelings she's definitely never had before.

She knows his time on Jakku will be short, but there's more to the smuggler than meets the eye. And, the secrets he's hiding just might turn out to be deadly.

It's a riveting tale of vampires, legends, and the ancient struggle of good versus evil, as well as the narrator's barely tamed bloodlust-

NANA Characters in Quarantine

I was inspired to write this since I had to go under quarantine earlier this month due to coming in close contact with a co-worker who tested positive for COVID. I returned to work this week and I’m doing just fine! If you wish for me to do this with one of the fandoms on my list, then feel free to request it!

~~Nana Osaki~~

Does NOT handle quarantine well at first. Being unable to sing makes her jittery and cranky! Will literally rant and rave to anyone who listens and she’ll do that for hours!

But once she gets all of the frustration out of her system, Nana will come up with ways to make the best of the lockdown. Surprise, surprise, they’re mostly music based!

Will use this opportunity to come up with new material and has video calls every night with the band to discuss it. They’re not gonna sit around and be lazy when they could be getting creative as far as she’s concerned!

If she’s with her S/O or Ren during the quarantine, then it’ll make things much better for Nana since she’ll have someone always around to talk to and just share company with! Cuddles! Lots of cuddles! Just don’t tell anyone though.

If Nana is alone during lockdown, then her anxiety will definitely spike and she’ll have panic attacks more often. When that happens, she’ll usually call or text someone while using the paper bag method to keep herself calm.

~~Nana Komatsu~~

Is pretty bummed about the lockdown but doesn’t want to complain and prefers to make the best of it instead. Will definitely be talking Nana down and off the ledge when she gets too annoyed.

Decides to make BLAST and Trapnest masks to sell online which become extremely popular much to her delight. Yes the bands approve and yes Hachi is making masks for them!

Is the most likely to gain weight during lockdown. Will look up recipes online and try them out which is the cause of said weight gain. Hachi loves food after all!

You can definitely expect to see Hachi on social media a lot and it’ll be her main way of keeping in contact with her friends and family. Livestreaming and making cooking videos will definitely keep Hachi occupied alongside her mask business!

If Hachi is with her S/O, she’ll definitely be doing many things with them and trying to make them a part of her videos which will be very cute and adorable! Awwwww!

~~Nobu Terashima~~

Takes the lockdown quite well. He’s pretty introverted so being alone and isolated for a while doesn’t affect him as much as others.  

Uses the free time to write songs and new material just like Nana and they call every day with new pieces and ideas.

Spends a lot of time on social media and donates to a lot of humanitarian causes, persuading fans of BLAST to do the same which always succeeds.

Will gladly fight anyone who thinks the pandemic is a hoax, is an anti-masker, or just don’t wanna obey guidelines. You’re not gonna get other people sick on Nobu’s watch!

Likes to livestream and play music for his fans whether it be covers or original material. Hachi is one of his mods and his biggest supporter.

~~Shinichi Okazaki~~

The lockdown affects his living as a gigolo (if he still does it by then) so you’re damn right Shin doesn’t like it! He hates being restricted and you can expect long-winded debates between him and Nobu on how the pandemic should be handled.

If Shin has an S/O and is with them during lockdown, they can expect a lot of sex and overall intimacy! No one is surprised if Shin ends up getting said S/O pregnant. If he’s gonna be cooped up in the house for a while, then he could at least get some action out of it!

Is lazy AF during lockdown and isn’t interested in music or social media. In fact, don’t expect to hear from Shin during quarantine at all. Everyone has to initiate contact with him first and yes it pisses them off.

The only way to get Shin to do something productive is if his S/O threatens to cut him off sexually and goes through with it. He’ll do anything to get some WAP! Speaking of which, expect to see Shin dancing to music and expect to hear it playing a lot.

The only social media posts Shin will be making is photos of him and his S/O as well as getting on Nobu’s nerves. Shin gets tons of followers because of his looks but his heart is for his S/O only and he proudly displays that!

~~Yasu Takagi~~

Anticipated the lockdown and went shopping beforehand. He’s always prepared.

With an S/O, Yasu will use this opportunity to get closer to them and have deep conversations that can last for hours. Also lots of cuddles and affection! Yasu’s S/O will definitely be spoiled!

Yasu will be working from home so expect to see him on his laptop a lot. He will be doing video calls frequently with BLAST and upper management at Gaia as well as his law firm if he’s still a lawyer.

Likes to binge-watch YouTube videos and browse on Reddit. He likes to interact with his favorite YouTubers and give advice on Reddit like the kind person he is. Yasu will also donate to humanitarian causes like Nobu does.

Acts as the peacemaker during arguments between Nobu and Shin. Will also calm Nana down if her anxiety flares up. Got any problems? Call Yasu! He’s always available!

~~Ren Honjo~~

Gives no shits about the lockdown and is zen AF. He has to stay inside for a while? Ok!

Is mostly gonna spend the days in bed with his S/O (if they’re with him) and just wants to be close to them. Sleeping is Ren’s best friend!

If Ren is still using drugs, then he’s gonna be unbearable to be around since this means he’ll have to go through withdrawal and will have no way to get the drugs.

Will be unreachable during lockdown if he’s with his S/O. They come first as far as he’s concerned and he wants to make up for lost time with them as much as possible.

Will play music just to brush up on his guitar skills. May join Nobu on one of his livestreams every now and then and play with him as well as chat with fans.

~~Reira Serizawa~~

Has the same reaction as Nana when it comes to the lockdown and has bitching sessions with her about it too. Everyone is annoyed (except Shin) and if anyone tries to interrupt, they get bombarded by Reira and Nana to the point of not being able to get a word in.

Is bored AF and literally doesn’t know what to do with her time. Calls everyone and annoys the hell out of them to the point where they block her number. Reira just wants some company! 🙁

Spends the most time on social media out of everyone and mostly sings songs for her fans. Yes she takes requests and yes she gets a lot of them. Joins Nobu on his livestream whenever Ren is present and provides the vocals for their music. It instantly goes viral as one would expect.

If Reira has an S/O, they can definitely expect her to be clingy and trying to always have their attention. If they’re working from home and have to do video chats, Reira will definitely be in the background and will bring you things if you ask. She may or may not be appropriately dressed.

Loves to listen to other musicians on Spotify and will shout them out and uplift them. If anyone sings a cover of one of Trapnest’s songs, Reira will cry with joy and happiness!

~~Takumi Ichinose~~

Takes the lockdown in stride surprisingly enough. He doesn’t want to risk getting sick nor does he want his bandmates getting sick.

Decides to relax more instead of working which shocks most people. If Takumi has an S/O, he’ll want them to stay with him but if they can’t, he’ll settle for calls and texts.  

Sex, sex, and more sex! His S/O will definitely be worn out unless they have a high sex drive and if they get pregnant, Takumi will be happy and expects it to happen unless you use birth control.

Likes to try new challenges and will have a YouTube channel dedicated to that. Such content includes eating a Carolina Reaper pepper, drinking very strong cocktails, and gaming-related challenges. Yes Takumi is a gamer and his rage is legendary.

Does weekly video calls with the band to make sure they’re taking care of themselves and staying safe. No one’s getting sick on his watch!

~~Naoki Fujieda~~

Hates the restrictions and whines about being stuck in the house all day, everyday. He wants to have fun damn it!

Will do anything and everything to keep himself busy and if he has an S/O with him, they’ll be dragged into it too! Naoki doesn’t want you to be bored!

Will do challenges with Takumi and plays video games a lot whether it’s by himself, with his S/O, or with Takumi. His livestreams are a riot and there’s plenty of laughter to be had, especially if Takumi is present.

Likes to upload skits and rants that become quite popular due to how funny and true they are. Also gives advice to people which actually works and makes their lives better.

Always makes sure his appearance is on point and likes to promotes fashion brands, ideas, and trends. Naoki loves beautiful things so expect to see a lot of pics of just that!

~~Junko and Kyosuke~~

Kyosuke takes the lockdown in stride while Junko panics. Junko ends up furloughed (she’s a salesperson) so she worries about finances.

Kyosuke comes up the idea of doing art commissions for money and it becomes a huge success. Junko decides to join in and also makes and sells masks with Hachi.

Their sex life becomes much more active during lockdown and it’s quite noticeable with how relaxed Junko is. Teasing them about this will just make Junko act like a tsundere and Kyosuke act smug.

They network with other artists worldwide and become quite involved, especially in the black community.

Kyosuke watches various livestreams while Junko sticks to services like Netflix and Hulu. Kyosuke is a mod for Hachi’s livestreams and Junko catches up on her favorite shows while live-tweeting with fellow fans of said shows and having discussions.

NothingWillSuffice is quite a skilled writer, with a set of intriguing AUs.

We've interviewed NothingWillSuffice, asking her questions about her fanworks and advice for fellow writers!

1. How long have you been writing in general?

In general, I’ve been writing since I was about thirteen. That’s roughly six years.

2. How long have you been creating for the fandom, and what's your favorite part of the process?

I’ve been making content for Miraculous Ladybug for about as long as I’ve been a member of the Miraculous Fanworks server. Since I joined in November of 2020, that’s about one year. When writing, I’d say my favorite part is letting my mind run, when I can manage it, and trying to keep up. What I mean by that is: my best ideas are usually my first ideas, and letting those initial notions flow usually leads to some really nice stuff. Letting my concepts come out as quick and raw as possible is fun and liberating, but it’s hard to do that most of the time, because my fingers can’t always move quickly enough and I lose the perfect wording I had conjured, or the idea in general. As for illustration, I think my favorite part of my creative process is the sketch, for basically the same reason. It’s nearly a tie between all the different parts of illustrating, but sketching is the time where I can just flesh out my ideas freely without worrying too much about the end result. The very state of creating is what I love, and I started to draw because I was enamored with the ability to transfer visuals from the mind into the physical world, so sketching is the perfect part. For each type of creation, ideation follows very closely after it.

3. Has there been anything in particular that influences your style?

For writing, not much. I kind of just do what I want, and read often. With drawing, besides the Japanese manga style that has greatly influenced the cartoon/comic drawing world in general, not really. I’m constantly bouncing around, restless, using different styles as they suit different ideas. The only true constant is the anatomy of my characters. Line quality, use of color, blending techniques and the like change as I see fit for the mood of each project.

4. Do you have any advice you'd like to give to other creators?

Having fun is so important. I know life doesn’t always give us something to have fun with, but I find that fun is mostly a mentality. Even with a project you’re not particularly enthused by, if you make the decision to have fun while you’re doing it, you will find a way. It could be as simple as playing your favorite music and letting it hype you up, or snacking on something awesome while fostering your favorite vibes.

5. How do you think the identity reveal is going to go? Feel free to write something quick if you want to!

I think the identity reveal is going to be a headache. The show already puts far too much emphasis on Marinette’s “love life,” so there’ll probably be focus on that melodrama rather than the awesome plot that should be developing. But that’s just my pessimistic point of view (ironic, I know, considering my previous answer). With that in mind, I’m going to have fun watching it anyway, because that’s what I watch Miraculous Ladybug for: to delight at its atrocities while appreciating its strong concept.

Regarding comments on fics...

I’m generally open to constructive criticism on my fics. By constructive, I mean meant to help me improve my writing in some way, and not being an asshole about it.

I’m not shy about my day job as a professor. One of the things I teach is creative writing, and that’s what I got my degrees in (though I also nearly double-majored with political science until that got depressing).

In sort, I have a lot of experience giving and receiving criticism, and not all of it has been positive.

I have seen a professor make an undergraduate student cry for making the undergraduate mistake of writing outside their own culture without enough research. It’s not unusual to see, but this professor had let the student take a graduate-level workshop before they were ready, then screamed at them for a mistake every single one of us in the room recognized as something everyone does at some point.

That same professor berated another entire class because he felt some students weren’t putting in effort, then had the gall to tell me he “didn’t have time” to read my thesis project/novel when he was the chair of my committee.

As an undergraduate I had some difficulty with a short story I was working on and set it aside to write a different one to turn in for workshop, then was accused of “not trying” because it wasn’t my best work and was experimental (and kind of a failed experiment but I learned a lot from it).

I was denied entrance to a novel-writing class because the chapter I sent to the professors to get approval was seated in fantasy and mythology. Mind, they never said that wasn’t permitted before that point, and it wasn’t like I didn’t have “literary” ideas for novels.

Writing anything not seen by the establishment as “literary” was not acceptable writing for undergraduate students at both my undergraduate and graduate institutions. It was disheartening to have to tell a student, “This isn’t literary and you can’t write it” for a class.

I’m not forced to do that anymore, thankfully. When I give feedback, I praise students on what they are doing well, and I tell them what still needs work/development. I’m not judging their plots or gatekeeping them—the only criteria is no fanfiction for class. (But I’m open about being a fanfiction writer, even if I won’t share my pen name.)

Fanfiction is a different venue. Where in university we are working to develop skills, constructive criticism is expected.

In fandom, that’s not always the goal of the writer. Sometimes it’s just to get that fucking plot tribble out of our heads. Sometimes it’s based on a silly joke. So often, constructive criticism is inappropriate.

So while I welcome it on a personal level and am happy when someone lets me know of a typo or an issue with cultural insensitivity, that’s because I treat writing my fanfiction as though I am writing professionally, and often engage in sometimes-copious amounts of research.

For one of my fics there are like 4-5 lines spread out over a couple chapters about ancient peasant dyeing techniques, and I accessed and read scholarly articles to try to ensure it was accurate, even going so far as to make sure the plants I was using were native to the area in which the fic was set.

That’s me, though.

I’m currently going through a period of commenting on every fic I read and enjoy, even if it’s just to say that I found the fic delightful. I don’t offer con-crit or comment on editing-level issues because I know not everyone wants it. If the author asks a question in the AN, sometimes I answer it.

To me, editing-level issues are only a big deal if they’re consistent enough to disrupt the flow of the story, and if they do I just don’t leave a comment or only comment on what I liked.

Trust me, I notice these issues. Bear/bare/bear, pique/peak/peek, etc. But I’m not reading on AO3 to be a volunteer and unasked-for beta-reader. I’m reading for enjoyment.

I don’t comment at all if I have an issue with someone’s characterization, or disagree with their plot decisions, or what have you. I drop the fic unless I find other reasons to enjoy it. Over time, if the writer wants to improve, they will dedicate themselves to doing so, often by emulating the writers they enjoy.

Regardless, telling someone you hate their fic isn’t going to help them improve. It’s going to dishearten them, especially if you’re an asshole about it. One comment isn’t going to help them leap forward past years of developing their writing skills.

Which is why I think rule #1 on fandom participation should be “don’t be an asshole,” not that everyone is even capable of following that rule.

So, yeah, that’s my two cents.
