Note
I'm a (bisexual) male listener and I listen to a lot of M4F audio roleplays. I usually just imagine a female listener character for myself, but now I'm so used to it that I have a hard time imaging myself as a male character when listening to M4M. I was trying to listen to Obsidian Lantern's Lost Prince series and I had to consciously remind myself to RP as a man.
This is only slightly embarrassing but I still feel the need to confess it.

The Lost Prince
@avictimofthejazz (Heavily plotted Belle x Pat)
The brunette earnestly entreats Laurent for another twenty minutes in his BOOKSTORE as her eyes continue to speedily rove the pages to revisits a scene that lingered RENT-FREE in the corridors of her mind.
He has already delayed his departure an hour. The long-suffering elder gazed down upon her from his place upon the ladder. With an INDULGENT sigh, the kindred-spirit of a man tucked the last few novels back into their orderly places.
His spectacled eyes growing wide in recognition of the novel splayed open in her hands. "That one again?" He playfully quips. It is the sixth time that week she has returned to it.
"Oh-- yes." Belle fondly answers. "It's most exhilarating." Large twinkling eyes peer up at him and she smiles. "It's my new favorite!!!" Marking her place with her finger, she relates.
"You say that about all the books," he witheringly protests with no real-bite.
Sheepish and mildly abashed, she concedes with a dipping of her head with a laugh. "That's true. But this one is different---" She can tell that with the quirking of his brow he desires an explanation. One that Belle is prepared to give.
"It keeps one glued to the very edge of the seat, wondering if the madame will ever embrace the fact that her lover has returned from war changed. And if he, her lover, hardened hearted, will ever find comfort in kindness again. Or, if he will ever love her again. There's this beautiful exchange between her and a man of considerable social standing. He is trying to lure her away from her most cherished prize, with honeyed words and doleful eyes. And she, with quivering voice professes that there is no one else in the world she would rather live for, not for riches or gold or diamonds...." Her cheeks warm with color as Belle realizes the greying man did not likely have the same zeal held towards fantastical romances of the fictional kind. She drags in another breath almost in apology and finishes the last few pages before handing the book back to him.
"And?" Laurent patiently presses. "How does it end? Is it a happily ever after?"
"It's quite tragic." The brunette wistfully sighs. "The author never finished it." She wistfully confides. "I suppose it is up to the reader to decide then."
Laurent's bemused smile softens considerably. "That's a shame. Tell you what, if you're so fond of it, why don't you keep it?" He imparts. "No one else even seems to give that book a chance." He adds the very moment he senses her hesitation.
The once dour expression blooms into one of glee as she sits upright. "Really? Thank you. But Monsieur, I -- I insist I work for it." A determined Belle answers. "I could volunteer a few hours every evening until it is paid off."
How could the kindly man say no to such pleasant company? Or to the fact that wherever the young lady went, droves of curious people tended to follow - which boded well for his shop. "It's a deal then." Laurent remarks, placing a paternal hand down upon her shoulder. "You should be on your way home now, though. It'll be dark in a few hours, and I know Maurice will worry. Tell my old friend that I send my greetings, won't you?"
Belle cast a nearly startled glance out the window in recognition of his requests and gasps. She had made the poor man stay an hour LATER than usual. With an apology, Belle hurriedly sweeps the book into her picnic basket which, had doubled as her grocery basket for the day.
As she departs from the store, with Philippe's reigns in hand, a terrible noise diverts her path from the usual. 'What in heaven's name?' She rumbles beneath her breath as she turns the corner. There, she finds three men ganged up on a poor, scraggly faced skeleton of a man. They were kicking and punching at him. Belle knew she could not just LEAVE him to suffer; no matter how perilous an intercession could be.
Tumblr media
Trembling with fear, she finds herself shouting an order. "LEAVE THAT POOR MAN ALONE!" She braces, fingers slowly gripping for her newly acquired book. Oh, what a shame it is to weaponize such a gift. Yet, the bibliophile recognized that it is her only useful means of defense. Her steps stalk forward, praying in earnest that she APPEARED more menacing than she actually FELT. "I said, LEAVE HIM BE!!!"
The goon nearest the homeless man couldn't help but get one last kick in before a buddy grabbed him. "That's the lunatic's daughter!!! She's bound to be just as crazy!!! She's going to attract too much attention---" They BOLT but only after taking what little money he had.
Belle hesitantly approaches the now wounded man. "Ea---easy." She murmurs, her voice quakes. Though there is an awful stench, she lowers herself down next to him. She rips a clean patch from her apron. "I-I'm going to wipe your lip. Is--- is that okay?" The brunette tremulously asks the WILD and OVERGROWN man. She makes no further effort to crowd his personal space even if her dearest desire is to cup his cheeks. "Are-- you-- you badly injured? Wou--would you like me to fetch someone?"

Locations in The Lost Prince - Kuzgrad
When we pass the tall iron gates of Kuzgrad, I am filled with that once familiar feeling of foreboding. It is the old chill that had always awaited me at the Imperial Palace, a reminder of the ghosts that once inhabited this place. I stifle a shiver as I step from the car, looking up at the old, craggy grey face of the ancient building, unable to throw off the sense of being surveyed from the empty windows. But this place is not the Imperial Palace, a sprawl of Vasily might, no this place is darker and far more ancient, the very stones embedded with their blood, their dead, their essence. This place is older than all of the places I have ever or could ever known put together.
---------------------------------------------------
But there is no name for the little palace at sits in his shadow. It has had a hundred in the last thousand years but none of them have last the course. Veins of crumbling cobbled walls betray its ancient roots against the smooth skin of modern, smoothed facades. Turrets rise straight as lances, onion-capped and bearded with ivy. Blind gargoyles and fanciful beasts preside overhead, spotted with lichen and webbed with frost. The windows are still in their frames, the diamond panes yellowed with age.
---------------------------------------------------
Less a palace and more a house. Grandpapa always gently corrected me when I called this place a palace. Father would gruffly remind me that palaces were our vast homes in Bevulsk, Corzberg, Kosken, Derm, the Imperial Palace and Tamolasyn. Kuzgrad was merely a large manor estate compared to them.
A pair of stone wolves flank the door, watchful and blind. The door is ajar, cracked open a span of mere inches.
The shriek of the hinges sends a judder up my arm. Light brushes across the dust-coated floor, falling on the indents of fresh footprints made hours ago. The windows have been clumsily boarded up, the light fixtures and frames on the wall draped with ragged sheets. Nothing has been removed, only hidden from prying eyes.

The Lost Prince by Frances Hodgson Burnett My rating: 4 of 5 stars I was not expecting to be so moved by this story. My co-writer suggested it as some muse-feeding for a particular character we're constructing in our current WIP. I found a copy on thrift books because it is out of print, which is sad. The beauty of this story is found in both the absolute boyishness and its profound loyalty. The boys playing at war, spies, legends, lost princes, and freedom of a country reminded me of many of the boys I grew up with. This book captured all that is best in boys perfectly. It showed exactly what it was that made me a tomboy because this was what I wanted to be around. I loved it for that. It also shows a faithfulness between a follower and leader that is beautiful. I loved that the leader never once turned out to be less than worthy, and I loved that the follower never broke his faithfulness. The hope and joy and steadfastness brought tears to my eyes. This is probably why the book is out of print, it's not popular for things to be right through and through. All heroes must be part villains, all heroes must fall, and all leaders must break the trust of their followers. Loyalty in the face of all is a virtue we no longer hold dear. Looking at this book through Christian-colored glasses, I found my faith strengthened by the concept of a good and long-awaited King who is busy working for the day of his return. The son's trusting and obedient love of his father made me weep. The faithful servants and soldiers counting it their greatest act to "only stand and wait" encouraged my soul. Only word of caution, there is fair amount of strange spiritualistic philosophy built in the story, as you also find in The Secret Garden, so if you are sharing this most excellent book with your sons, which I highly recommend, just be aware. Hey! Your fanfic "The Lost Prince" is blowing my mind. Eugene with the moonstone power and Cassandra secretly being his twin? Genius move! The romantic tension between Rapunzel and Eugene is keeping me hooked. How do you approach writing those romantic moments? The character development is spot on. Any challenges or joys in creating this alternate storyline? Can't wait for the next chapter! Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you! I'm definitely not the first person to write Eugene and Cassandra as twins! "Splitting Heirs" by @phantoms-lair and @providentially-demonic is a great fic that builds on a post-canon reveal of this idea, and it's a fabulous story. I would definitely recommend that fic if you love the idea of Cass and Eugene being twins! It can be found on A03!
Writing romantic moments, how do I approach them? Honestly, if there is a particular romantic scene I want to write, I often watch some of their romantic moments from Tangled or the show. I then think about how would these characters react in this situation considering their different upbringing? A lot of their romantic moments seem to just happen without me really having to think too much about it.
The only challenge to the storyline so far has been that it has consistently evolved. Varian and Quirin were never meant to be a part of it, but they have! I plan out a few chapters at a time.
The joy of creating this alternate storyline has been figuring out exactly how the characters would react in this situation. Cassandra, who has grown up loved but feeling empty is suddenly facing a reality that she has a connection to Eugene and doesn't know why. Rapunzel wants to break free and fall in love rather than marry someone she simply would not love. Though she's definitely head-over-heels for Eugene! I'm loving writing Eugene's powers. He knows so little!
There is a scene I am really looking forward to writing, and it's going to be GREAT to get to that scene.
Another challenge is figuring out Gothel. She does believe Eugene is giving the Sundrop more power when he's in close connection to it. But she also knows she can't keep him around forever. The reveal that she always planned to kill him was one I was worried about. It seems to have worked though!
Writing Eugene and Cass bickering is so much fun. If they find out the truth about their connection, sparks will fly!
Thank you so much for the ask! I'm thrilled you are enjoying The Lost Prince! I hope to update again this weekend!
