My 2000s/2010s kid medias wisdom:
Azula deserved a redemption arc and Ty Lee is the girl who got shafted by not being Zuko's love interest
The Soul Society is a military state and Ichigo was a good person for never joining it and Orihime was the best Bleach character
Sasuke was right and Kishimito made him an extremist as ableist victim blaming propaganda and Sakura and Hinata are equally good
Ben 10,including the sequels,is better than Danny Phantom
Flynn Ryder was a creep and a dickhead who didn't deserve Rapunzel
Hiccup was trans but so was Astrid, only transfem instead
Teen Titans is a beyond good show but the influence it's had on DC's comics is bad and Young Justice Animated should've never existed
The Hunger Games and Chronicles of Narnia derserve better than to be grouped in with Harry Potter because Thg is an anti-bigotry story rather than liberal bs and you can actually pull 'Death of the Author' with the problematic elements of Tcon because C.S Lewis is actually dead
Adventure Time is an almost perfect show and so're it's comics and sequel miniseries' and you can't pull 'It's bad because it got too serious in later seasons!!!' as a fact because that was the point, that it was trying to be different from most kids cartoons and it not being your thing dosen't mean it's not good writing
Winx Club,W.i.t.c.h,Totally Spies,The Powerpuff Girls,Kim Possible and MLP are feminist even if they have their flaws and they're brought in a girly packaging because they're meant to be heroes for little girls
Johnny Test is fine and y'all are weird fow visceral your reaction to it was
Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped the ball by having Percy end up with Annabeth because they're 'destined to' since the point of Percy's story is that he never gets to choose what they actually want and they should've either ended up with Rachel or stayed single to work on character development and healing,Luke never actually cared about other demigods and was only using them as ammo against the gods because if he actually cared he wouldn't have abused them,Toa should've instead been a third Percy series of them destroying Olympus' corruption because they've had enough of the gods and replacing it with an actual good societal system and Percy is a super cool autistic Team Parent who'd be femme and kidcore if Rick bothered to develop their interests
Star Vs The Forces of Evil should've made trans Marco and autistic Star canon, endgamed them with Tom and Janna instead of eachother, made Jackie an mc and done none of that 'no magic' shit
Gravity Falls,We Bare Bears and Undertale/Deltarune's icon status are well-deserved
Craig of the Creek only gets ignored because it's a black show that's good
And She Ra and the Princesses of Power is called cringe nonstop because it's fanbase is largely wlw and trans women who're loud and proud with their queerness and the creator at the time of it's airing identified as a nonbinary lesbian and people hate female queerness while hyping up male kinds that play into stereotypes(Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf,Magnus and Alec from The Mortal Instruments, the Shiro/Keith discourse, the Boyfriends Webtoon,Marauder's Era even being a thing, etc.Note that i am not calling Stevenson female but rather saying he knows what lesbophobic experiences are)

Do you think people that grow up in the 80's with Chronicles of Narnia miniseries from 1988 were also crying and saying their childhood is ruined once the movies were announce or is being a annoying just something only this generation is good at?
"My childhood is ruined" how? How is it ruined? They are just making another movie, they old one are not going to disappeared for fuck sake! Your happy memories of those movies are not going to go away! Chronicles of Narnia is a popular book series that had been turned into movies several times before. And you can still watch all of them and read all of the books. Nothing is ruined, y'all just want to complain about something!

Fine I'll give you some more book asks since you acted all pathetic and reblogged it again and begged for more: 18, 25, 30, 42, 43, 50, 51, 55, 61, 67, 68, 80, 86, 99, 100, 102 (lol), 104, 117, 118, 124. Also you must answer them all in one sitting (no drafting) otherwise the curse of the procrastinating tumblrina will fall upon you
Hahahaha omg yes, brilliant, love it, love you
18 your least favorite book ever
I mean there have been a fair few bad choices I've picked up along the way. But that I actually finished?
I really do think it might have been Twilight. Granted I did go in expecting to hate it, but it still managed to be blander and worse than I thought it had any right to be for a series with such devoted following.
25 a book by your favourite author
I said this in another answer but I don't really have favourite authors like that anymore. There are many good authours out there and I will read a series or two but I don't go looking for their names like I used to. But so far I guess Erin Morgenstern is a 2 for 2 author with very beautiful prose in both The Night Circus and The Starless Sea
30 your favourite middle grade book
So I've already talked about Narnia, HP, and my love for Eva Ibbotson but that was pretty much what I read back then. So I'll just mention Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson as well. I don't remember many details from it, but I do remember that I laughed my way through it, which is never a bad thing.
42 a book that made you want to scream by the time you got to the end
I remember A Storm of Swords by George RR Martin made me call you and scream at your answering machine lol
It was bad enough that the Red Wedding happened, but then right after we've seen the massacre the next chapter is from Aryas point of view again and it's her and Sandor reaching Riverrun and she is So Close to being with her family again, to being safe. But he is mean and harsh and won't let her run off and if I remember correctly he takes out his fucking axe and hits her in the head with it. And that's how the chapter ends???
I mean obviosuly he hit her with the blunt side and only enough to knock her out, but we have Just Seen how you can't trust anyone, and then she's with this big mean killing machine who she doesn't get along with, and he hits her with an axe??? Fuck man! Rude-ass bitch is what Martin is. But what else is new, you know?
43 a book that you have read more than three times
Harry Potter. And yes, I am well aware about how much we're all hating on Rowling now, please don't misunderstand me. But I had read the first 3 books over 30 times before the series finished. I used to re-read them about once a year. There is not a single book that even comes close to the amount of times I've read them. No, not even Narnia.
50 a book that made you cry a LOT
The Glass Lake by Maeve Binchy fucking wrecked me when I read it in high school. Like it is off to a pretty grim start with a mother leaving her family and them thinking she killed herself as is, but then it gets even More emotional. I remember this one chapter that just left me sitting there shellshocked for the better part of an hour, those of you who have read it will know when.
51 a book that you found underwhelming
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I know! I'm sorry! I love the movie and bbc miniseries as much as the next hopeless romantic but the book just kind of... didn't live up to it? Reading it you can kind of tell that it is her first novel and certain things are a bit rushed and clumsy. I still enjoyed it, but I was expecting to love it, you know?
55 a book with a satisfying ending
Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle. Them dying just felt right to me. Not that I wanted them to die-die of course, but the way that it happens? Yes. It all came full circle and I always found a certain comfort in the way he let them die and stay dead (to our world).
None of this rising from the dead bullshit. Just tell a good story and wrap it up like a neat little bodybag. Only cowards let protagonists rise from the dead. Looking at you JK, yes even when I first read the book.
61 your favourite horror novel
Ok so reminiscing on books I read as a kid has me thinking, one of the books that really had me Scared for real when reading was probably The Witches by Roald Dahl. And like yes, I know, it's a childrens book. But it's a Scary childrens book. And I was a Child. I just remember the horror as he found out he was stuck in a hotel infested with child-eating witches *shudder*
67 your favourite historical fiction novel
Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCaig, I really enjoyed Gone With The Wind, but this published fanfic/spinoff/prequel to that is just so good. It made me care for the characters in a whole new light all over again. And he always was my favourite out of all the original cast so it was nice to have some more ideas about what he had done before Scarlet threw that first vase at him.
68 your favourite piece of classic literature
Can I say Shakespeare here or did it have to be written as books-books? I'm deciding books-books is the premise so I guess I'm putting down Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I don't like the ending, but after the book mentioned in #86 a bit further down it is better now. And I think it's the classic I've come back to the most so...
80 a book that reminds you of a loved one
The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan that @hobbitsus lent me in high school was just a blast to read and I remember it fondly. And the whole story is just so very Her from when we were growing up which adds to the love.
86 a book with an insane plot twist
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Yes again with me bringing in published fanfic of classic works but the whole premise is so good! There are people who can jump into books? There is someone who manages to jump into an original manuscript, thus changing all the copies of the book? There are detectives working on putting the original Jeyen Eyre back into order when this happens to her? And that is the reason the book ends the way it does??? Amazing.
I never quite liked the ending in Jane Eyre, there is this bit that just seems to come out of nowhere to me. In this book? It's because Detective Thursday was there doing whatever she wanted. This fanfic makes the original work better. But the way it twists to do so? 11/10
99 a book with a strong female protagonist
The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon gives us all that Girl power Asexuality Forge your own path representation and I am here for it. Does the last book feel like the same series as the first book? Not even slightly. But the books are still a fun ride and I recommend anyone wanting to read about a farmer's daughter running away to join the army and then being actually good at her job give it a try.
100 your favourite gothic novel
ok so in like my mind Gothic should be Old. Old as balls. But I will also admit to Wanting to read books that old more than I Actually read them. So I will be cringe enough to just go with Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice cause that's the book I loved in high school and the internet lets me classify it as goth even if it doesn't feel right
102 your favourite dark academia read
What even counts as Dark Academia though??? I feel like it should be an ancient and heavy-ass tome but most things I read are quite modern? Can I say The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley? Like the book took up a good part of my backpack when I read it in school, that should count for something right?
I liked the way it spanned three generations' worth of stories and all the mysticism going on. It was my first Arthurian fiction as well which felt very Big and Impressive at the time.
104 a fluffy, sweet read
A Hundred Pieces Of Me by Lucy Dillon was a really comforting and nice read that I liked way more than I thought I would when it comes to chick lit. I think of that book whenever I try to pick out a vase now lol
117 your favourite anthology
So do we count fairy tales here or no? Cause I kind of want to say Bland Tomtar Och Troll which is that swedish collection of childrens stories that had the most exquisite art in it and I was especially obsessed with the story about the mermaid Akmea who saved the beautiful sailor, or the one with the kindly white lion who showed up in someones yard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidenote: I went through these old books to find the pictures since google was no help and one has an inscription wishing me a happy 4th birthday, and one has me trying to write my name and it is the most stiltedly awkward penmanship ever and my gosh that's the cutest thing 🥺
118 your favourite short story collection
Hoo.. I don't read a lot of those but when I was in high school they would give out little paperbacks called "Färdlektyr" with assorted short stories and poems and I always looked forward to that semester's edition, does that count?
124 the book you’re currently reading
I started on The Forest Of Stars by Heather Kassner a while back, and realised that the first 5 chapters do not live up to my hopes and so have not read anything since I had to put it down at the end of a lunch break OTL
These were a lot to do in one sitting! I did take a short break for dinner, but otherwise I did do it all in one go, please be happy? :*

at twenty, jane reads her very first full length novel, without a dictionary beside her to look up words, or needing to ask about certain phrases. the book is the chronicles of narnia, the lion the witch and the wardrobe. she’d seen the last half hour of the original miniseries on television, thought the effects were wonderful and loved the idea of a majestic talking lion. the battle between good and evil struck a close core, and she immediately became enthralled with the story. the following day she goes to hawkins library to borrow the book, only to discover there are multiple in the series. a little overwhelmed, because while they’re not big books by any means, all of them combined is still daunting. nevertheless, she takes out the book and gets through it very slowly, but ever surely. peter is her favourite character, and the quote: peter did not feel very brave; indeed, he felt he was going to be sick. but that made no difference to what he had to do, sticks with her forever. because if a young, magnificent king could overcome his fears and commit to his responsibilities, and come out stronger than ever, then so could jane!

Joyful Experiment, Day #8: "King Edmund Study," charcoal
And they stood looking upon it. Then said King Edmund, "I know not how it is, but this lamp on the post worketh upon me strangely. It runs in my mind that I have seen the like before; as it were in a dream, or in the dream of a dream." - C. S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
(Art diary under the cut)
Tumblr media
This is the reference I was working off. While I would liked to have captured the liveliness of his expression (and a number of other things) much better, this one didn't turn out terrible as a beginner study. He, um, looks a bit like the old Prince Valiant comics from the forties (not a compliment,) but I think a fan of the Narnia movies would be able to recognize the pose and crown, etc. I used cheat markings for distances and a few edges. This particular screencap has been in my files for years, as I have the strangest feeling I'm supposed to steal this actor's face for an original character.
The Narnia books seem both very present and faraway in my mind. They were a tremendous part of my childhood - aside from many rereads, the Radio Theatre dramas were the joy of my heart (my first experience with really good audio drama,) I loved the BBC miniseries and the 1970's animation in spite of their flaws, and in my teens I made cosplays for the releases of the movies. My favourites were The Silver Chair and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
The Narnia stories don't follow me around or stay in my heart the way they do for some who loved them in childhood (LOTR does, though!) Nonetheless, I do have a warmth for them.
This fall I am going to teach a semester-long class for younger students on the Chronicles, with two weeks alloted for each book. It'll be my first reread in a bit (though I think it highly unlikely I have forgotten anything.) I'm a bit like the Doctor - the sheen can sometimes rub off of the things dear to me a little bit, but when I have a companion - or a class of students - to show it to, the wonder revivifies. "And when you see it, I see it." I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing new truth in those dear old children's books.

Earthsea Deserves Better
WARNING: A RANT
The new trailer for The Rings of Power has recently been released. As awestruck as I was watching the trailer, I can’t help but be reminded of my frustration on just how underappreciated Earthsea is and the kind of "justice" it has received throughout the years.
The rich and magnificent world-building of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea certainly deserves a grandiose depiction in mainstream media as that of JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and CS Lewis’ 'The Chronicles of Narnia’ (no, I won't count the Sci-FI miniseries and Studio Ghibli adaptation of 'Tales from Earthsea' as canon; nor did Ursula). And not only did its stupenduously written plot make it deserving of a big break, but also because the saga has been a pioneer in a lot of controversial aspects of our society and continues to slay in its own way to date.
Introduced in 1968, the Earthsea saga has since been breaking stereotypes and deviating norms by having women and characters of color become the blood, heart, and soul of the story–a notorious trademark of Le Guin. Ursula even had to fight publishers to make sure Ged was depicted as copper-brown skinned in the covers as he was described in the books.
Not to mention the only pale skinned people in the whole archipelago were the Kargs and their far descendants that migrated west 2,000 years ago during the dark times, the Osskilians. And they were decribed in the first book as "savage people, white-skinned, yellow-haired, and fierce, liking the sight of blood and the smell of burning towns"--in short, barbarians. If this is not Ursula-level savagery, I don't know what is.
Another thing is that the Great House of Roke from A Wizard of Earthsea, if not one of, certainly is the original, the finest, and the best of the wizarding schools that has ever been introduced in all of history. It has undeniably become a beacon of inspiration for contemporary wizarding schools such as JK Rowling's Hogwarts.
I could go on and name a thousand other reasons for people to read and love Earthsea, but that is all–I can't do anything else but hopelessly rant about a book series that is severely underappreciated and plead of how deserving it is for a shot at redemption. I could only ramble about my desperation to see the epicness of this saga come to life.
Oh, how I long of the chance to gaze upon Erreth-Akbe’s sword atop the highest tower of Havnor!
I would die just to have a glimpse of the golden roofs of Berila, the orchards of Enlad in spring, and the towering height and ice caps of Mount Gont.
I am forever tormented by the fact that I’ll never get to see Ged confront his shadow, defeat the Old Powers that plagued the Tombs of Atuan, and his epic standoff with the old Dragon of Pendor, Yevaud.
My soul would forever lament and bear the agony of never witnessing King Lebannen’s journey with Ged to Selidor, their return from the death’s realm, and his coronation as the first king of Earthsea in 800 years after the reign of and as prophesied by his predecessor, King Maharion.
I'd want to explore and see other stories and events that shaped the archipelago, like the tragic fate of Morred and Elfarran and how the island of Soléa sank; the founding of the Great House and how Roke was tauted the 'Isle of the Wise'. I wanna see how prosperous Earthsea was during the rule of the 14 Kings of Havnor. I'm desperate to hear how the rendition of the Creation of Éa would sound and how epic it would look as it's played in the Long Dance, and sooo much more!
Earthsea deserves better.
Ursula K. Le-Guin deserved better.
