My thoughts on Phase 4

I AM SO EXCITED FOR PHASE 4 let me just start with that. Just generally, without knowing much about the movies or trailers or anything I am pumped. It looks so cool and there are going to be so many more heroes in the universe and that makes me so happy. I know some people want more focus on like the characters from previous phases but I love that they're staring out with new stuff because its the end of the infinity saga and they want to showcase that before immediately going into sequels and threequels.

Before I get into specific series and movies I want to talk about a couple of general things:

Disney + : I don’t like that “phase 4″ also includes the series(s). don’t get me wrong, I love them like series(s) were my favorite announcements of the night but like it’s weird that they're technically counted in the phase. It makes me feel like if you don’t watch the series you're going to be missing a plot point from a movie which would irk because its a lot easier to buy a movie ticket once or twice a year than to pay for a streaming service every month (though I’ll give Disney this 6.99 isn’t a bad price that's only like a dollar more than Hulu with commercials) .

The logos: Look I know logos aren’t everything but like some of those were... how you say garbage? terrible? a crime? Like some of them were spiderman far from home advertizements bad in terms of graphic design (I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of people using the ‘graphic design is my passion’ meme and it's totally appropriate). Not all of them we’re bad though, like The Eternals one was soo good, I liked how the background was kind of like a starry night, and the Shang Chi one good and the Doctor Strange one was okay. The Hawkeye logo was *chefs kiss* perfect, I love how they took the Fractions Hawkeye logo and updated it a bit because wow yes. The Loki logo was so bad I can’t even look at it, the fan made ones were so much better, loki I’m sorry you deserved better than some clip art that I think makes a word.... and the wandavision one was just werid but then again everything about them is werid so

The casts: MARVEL HAS THE BEST CASTS EVER that’s it im saying it, no I do not take constructive criticism. Say what you will about the movie but like the amount of talent that has been and will be in the mcu is astounding I mean we had RDJ and Chris Evans, who are amazing and Brie Larson (who by the way has a freaking oscar) and now we’re going to have Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumal Nanjani, Natalie Portman is back, MAHERSHA ALI IS BLADE LIKE WOW (I think he has an oscar too correct me if I’m wrong), Awkafina is gonna be in chang chi (I love her sm), and so many others just the amount of talent is astounding.

The diversity: SO MANY WOMEN. AHHH JAne foster as female thor??? Our first LGBTQ character (confirmed at least) is going to be a bi black woman??? AMazing??? Another headlining black superhero with blade??

Moving on to the actual movies and shows. I’m putting a read more because idk if I’m going to talk about every individual announcement but I might so-

My favorite announcement by far had to be the Hawkeye series, because KATE BISHOP BABEY. She is my favorite marvel comics character and soon to be mcu character :) and now she’s going to get the love she deserves and more people will know about her which makes me so happy. Also it’s interesting that they didn’t announce her casting, so I have hope that maybe they will cast someone asian since that’s always been my headcanon for her even though she’s white in the comics. I’m trying not to use a lot of screaming in caps sentences but just know when I think about Kate being on my screen I AM SCREAMING. When I first saw the post about the series I cried because I was so so happy. And fingers crossed this series is taking cues from the fractions hawkeye comics because that really encapsulated Clint’s character in a way the mcu... hasnt (I really hate mcu clint but that’s a story for another time) so I hope that while they introduce Kate they also fix mcu’s clint and make him actually likable. (if you couldn't tell I really really don’t like MCU clint.) or at the very least not screw up Kate like they did mcu clint.

Next up THE SAMBUCKY SERIES. (I know it has a real title but like thats long and I can’t spell soildier to save my life sooo yeah I’m gonna call it the sambucky series in tags and stuff). I know not alot of people are talking about this because we already knew that it was happening, so it’s like yeah we already saw that but seeing Mackie and Stan up on stage together just made it feel so real and it made me so excited. And then Mackie was holidng the shield and I was like ahhhhhhhhhh hes freaking captain America!!! I could write a million essays about why its so important that hes cap and why it means to much to me and a lot of people but,,, another post for another time. But anyway these characters and the actors who play them have so much good chemistry that I can’t wait to really see it. One thing I’m not so excited about... the logo. There was a totally different logo when Disney + originally announced it and I liked that one so much better, this one is just... clunky?? idk but it’s not having that big an impact on my life lol its more of an annoyance then anything.

I feel like now I should mention an actual movie..

THE ETERNALS. I’m going to admit I don’t know that much about the characters or the team (which I will soon fix when I do my wiki deep dive to find out everything) but if your judging just by the cast, this movie is going to be great. I mean the amount of talent in this movie is outstanding and I really have high hopes for what it could be.

Doctor Strange: The multiverse of madness intrigues me more than I thought it would. Like for starters the name is pretty ominous, and the fact that we’re getting an actual confirmation/movie about the multiverse (far from home really let me down in that regard) is really exciting. Also it’s supposed to be the first “scary” mcu movie, I don’t know how scary they can get with a PG-13 rating (which I’m going to guess there going to try to keep because there’s a big chunk of the fanbase that’s young) but that really made me interesting. ALSO WANDA MAXIMOFF IS GOING TO BE IN IT, so that makes me so excited for it because although I’m not the biggest fan of Wanda's character (which I blame J*ss Wh*don for completely and her lack of characterization in the rest of the mcu and the complete nerfing of her powers.... another post for another time.) I’ve always wanted to see her and Steven use magic togther and I’ve seen a few panels where Wanda, Strange and Loki form a little magic squad which I WOULD VERY MUCH LOVE to see put on screen (minus Loki I’m guessing), also maybe this movie will fix a little bit of her characterization? One thing that makes me nervous about this though is the teaser that it “directly connects” to the wandavision series, if I’m not able to get Disney plus and watch the show I don’t want to have missed out on plot points for the movie but I guess we’ll see.

since I mentioned it already, lets talk WandaVision. The logo as a mentioned earlier is so very bad, but- yeah idk it’s just very bad. Also the name is really werid? like wandavision with no space? It’s like they went to tumblr, found thier ship name and was like ‘that sounds like a great name for a show’ (that is their ship name right?). I was not planning on watching this show at all UNTIL I found out that FREAKING GROWN UP MONICA RAMBEAU is going to be in it. I didn’t think they would ever bring her up again in the mcu so I’m so happy that she is going to be in this show and I hadn’t even heard any rumors about this so it was a really fun suprise. Am I sure that they are only putting her in the show so that people will watch the trainwreck that is wanda and visions relationship? Yes. But will I fall into the trap because of Monica? YES. But I think this show could be good if your willing to get past the obvious weridness of human girl is in love with basically a robot, a human looking robot sure if your being generous and maybe not fully a robot (a synthoid?) but it’s still werird because he's not human. I’m curious to see what timeline they use for this, because vision is still dead at the end of endgame. I guess they could use the 2 years between civil war and infinity war but that’s just not a lot of time for a complete story (and if this show “directly connects” the doctor strange 2 then that means that movie takes place pre-thanos as well which would be werid)

That all being said, I am really excited to see Wanda’s character done by someone who isn’t J*ss Wh*don or the R*ssos because they screwed her up so bad and she was such a badass and powerful character in the comics (my personal theory is that all of these men saw that and went ‘a powerful woman? more powerful then men? we can’t have that around here’ like what was done with Carol in endgame).

BLADE. We don’t know much about this movie and I don’t know much about the character but I AM PUMPED even though we don’t have a release date for it yet. I just think Mahersha Ali is so talented and I love Black lead heros so yeah.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER am I a little sad they didn't use Thor Four: More thor as our queen Gina Linetti suggested? Yes. But I love this title and it’s just crackhead enough to be acceptable. I’m so happy that this movie is being made, because 1) someone has to make up for the first two thor movies somehow, 2) someone has to fix the mess the R*ssos made of thors character and 3) Thor Ragnarok made me actually like thor as a character, so I want to see more of that Thor. ALSO JANE FOSTER AKA NATALIE PORTMAN IS BACK??? AND SHES GONNA BE FREAKING FEMALE THOR YES YES YES (that picture of her holding the hammer? wow. powerful. showstopping. amazing) I can hear all the dudebros screaming about how much they hate it but 1) who cares what they think? and 2) its completely comics accurate which is thier usual lame excuse for misogyny so they can suck it. ALSO VAL IS THE QUEEN OF ASGARD AND TESSA SAYS SHES GONNA FIND HER QUEEN so we’re gonna get REAL CANON BI VAL (aka out first lgbtq mcu character who is also a woman of color which is so amazing and important!!!!) ANYWAYS THOR IS GOING TO BE AMAZING, its the movie I’m most pumped for AND THE LOGO IS AMAZING and thank you takia watiti for coming to save us.

Black Widow... hmmm... I’m not as excited for this because one it’s not that much of a surprise since we’ve even seen set photos for it and because Scarlett Johanssen, I just don’t like her. I like Nat as a character even though Scarlett has the acting range of a celerity among many other issues but yeah. I’ll still go see the movie because girl power, and the more female led movies are successful the more they’ll make and more it’ll make the stupid dudebros and misogynists in training at my school mad. Also Rachel Wietz is talented and I liked David Harbour in Stranger things (or you know the 5 total episodes I’ve watched)

Shang Chi looks like it’s gonna be good, and idk what the ten rings is but uhh I like it. And I love that we’re getting the actual modern and hopefully they’ll do a little flashback or callback to iron man 3. ALSO AWKAFINA

What if? I love what if comics just because it’s a cool concept and it’s nice to see what if but this feels kind of pointless almost??? Idk I just don’t know why its here (also I originally thought this was going to be on hulu so I’m bitter about that). But I’m interested to see what kind of animation style they’ll go with (which honestly is a huge factor in whether or not I’ll watch it), and depending on what stories they do, if I watch it I’ll probably just end up skipping around and only looking at certain ones.

Spiderman 3, Captain Marvel 2, Black Panther 2: I’m super pumped for all of these!!! I mean especially after that cliffhanger at the end of spidey (which I’m still shook about). I cannot wait to see my girl carol again, and hopefully her movie will explain what’s going on with the “kree sleeper cells” that skrull maria hill talked about in ffh along with what the heck talos and his wife were doing on earth while fury is in space? (also a cute little reuinion scene between fury and carol?) (also also what the heck has carol been doing since captain marvel and before endgame) (also also also plz give me carol rhodey and intoduce jessica drew thanks) okay so maybe I’m asking a lot of this movie but yknow..and I’m always up to see more Okoye because she is iconic and I love her.

Fantastic 4, Look I know there's been a bajillion fantastic four movies and they were all bad ( I personally liked the one With Micheal B Jordan, Miles Teller and Kate Mara) but I have faith in marvel studios. I mean they did take a basically unknown hero and turn him into one of the most beloved heroes and launched that single movie into a cash cow 23 movie freaking franchise (I’m talking tony stark and the tony stark cinematic universe by the way) so I think they can pull off the biggest miracle of all time and make a good fantastic four movie.

Mutants... I don’t really know what they mean by this? Like do they mean X men? Or a new movie called mutants? Or mutants themselves will be peppered into the mcu? I think that it shoud be one of the last two options. Just because even if the x men don’t show up for another 2-3 years its still kinda soon to just reboot the whole thing? (also I don’t think that Jean Gray should be recasted because Sophie Turner slayed that role despite the writing being terrible), even the fantastic 4 movie the lastest one will be 6-7 years old by the time marvel reboots it so- also the x men have just been so overdone by fox in bad ways that I feel like if theyre going to use mutants which they should they should do a new team and pull out some lesser known characters and or just put mutant heros in the mcu which I would love to see.

I wonder if the Force connections were still going on between TLJ and Episode IX because a year without the force connection and not seeing together is such a long time tho. But then I would want to see the drama between them once they finally see each other after not seeing the other for a year.

Hey Nonnie!

Yeah, I mean the drama would be great haha and I understand how it could be a compelling thing to witness for the audience, so I get the argument. I have a lot of feelings about Reylo, so I really am of two minds insofar as seeing them be angsty and in pain in canon is concerned LOL (as in, I don’t mind it in fanfic, but canon? MY POOR KIDS NEED HUGS NOT MORE TEARS), but don’t worry, I have zero impact on the outcome of the story, so my fluffy headcanons ruin nothing haha.

I’m going to try to get to a few anons that are similar in theme sooo, more under the cut:

There better be more Reylo scenes in IX. JJ needs to go all out when it comes to reylo scenes. I want them to touch each other more you know. Let Rey touch his hair and face. Let Ben touch her scar and untangle her hair. They also need to look at each other with knowing looks to signify that they are truly connected, they don’t need words to know what the other is thinking.

At the end of the day, it’s SW, not Star Romance (AS MUCH AS I WISH IT WERE OTHERWISE haha), but I’m sure we’ll get some good scenes to chew on. As far as I know, JJ enjoys romance and he’s pretty much the father of Reylo at this point, so I don’t imagine he’d go from what we got in TFA (where basically the plot was structured around these two characters having to meet), to like nothing in EPIX, esp given how popular their scenes were in TLJ (and TFA, tbqh). I am also majorly down for scar touching/reveals, SO DOWN.

I wonder if the teaser trailer that they will show in SWC would contain any hint of drama between Rey and Ben or just exchanges of dialogues but we don’t see them actually talking to each other because from what I observed from reddit and comments here and there, people are most excited of Rey and Ben interacting in IX.

We might get more than we expect! I imagine much of the plot (aside from the general, bad guys vs good guys fight!!!) will be kind of hidden. They do a great job with the trailers for SW and, instead of revealing the entire story, they just give us something to chew on for months (obsess over), and I prefer that. I hate watching trailers that literally give the entire movie away. Just makes me wonder why I should bother watching the movie at all! Whether people want romance between them, or just drama, I think both parties are going to be relatively happy when EPIX is all said and done.

I also fucking ready for the drama between Rey and Ben. I am pretty sure there will be screaming and crying and then when they finally calm down, they’ll talk civilly and voice out their feelings.

Haha! So many of you are super into the drama, and that’s awesome. I don’t know how much screaming there will be (considering Ben, all things considered, is actually really calm around Rey, which is pretty noteworthy, given how he is around literally everyone else), but she might be kind of pissed, given that she’s a little more angry than people seem to give her credit for (and that’s not a criticism on my part, I love this about her character). At any rate, I hope there’s lots of feelings in this movie. I’m such a sucker for feelings!

I hope we get to see more of Ben’s perspective in IX or he and Rey have the most screen time alone or together (is that selfish of me?). I recently just watched TFA and TLJ and we really don’t see much of him in either films despite being a co-protagonist.

I just checked the screen times for TFA and TLJ, and Adam has about 15 minutes in TFA and 23 in TLJ (Daisy has the most in both, 45 minutes in TFA and 33 in TLJ, respectively). I honestly hope that the plot is a little more focused and that the screen times are more balanced for the main characters (Fi//nn took a major cut in TLJ and I wish that wasn’t the case). I really do hope they focus primarily on the new characters, which seems to be a rather controversial opinion (and it’s my own and, as I have no impact on the outcome of the plot, lol who cares?). I have the OT for the original characters and the PT for their specific set of characters. I want to see more of the ST characters, but I’ve always been fine with story lines in SW that don’t center around the OT characters. We’ll see how it all goes!

Do you think if there is going to be a documentary, will they show the chemistry test between Adam and Daisy? I really want to see it. They have so much chemistry that it’s hard for me to imagine that they just winged it. I also imagined that they talk about how they were going to play each other off before filming TFA. Also do you think that both of them were already aware that their characters are going to be romantically involved before filming TFA?

I honestly don’t know that there was a chemistry test between Daisy and Adam. Adam was basically courted for the position, while Rey’s character was chosen after months of interviews and I think, given the timeline, they hired who they thought would work for the part. I think that John and Daisy had chemistry readings (they did, I was right) and, given that they had so much screen time together in TFA, that makes perfect sense (this interview also seems to imply that Daisy and Harrison had readings together too???). They’re great together. I think the hiring process for John was even longer. So, I think they wanted Adam regardless. We’ll have to see though. I’m sure they did readings together at some point (actually, I know they did because there’s video of them reading the script at the first table read).

As far as documentaries go, I HOPE SO because I love that shit. I know Ram and Rian have like 1800 hours of footage filmed from the production of TLJ, so I’d expect to see something like that pop up as a part of Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+ in the future.

As far as romance, apparently Adam has been working with one specific piece of information as to where it was all going, so I’m sure he has an idea of what the character is supposed to accomplish and why. As for Daisy, she was always really sweet and seemed to enjoy tf out of the Reylo fandom back when she was on instagram, so I don’t think the concept is foreign to her. And, given her response as to whether Kylo is redeemable or not leans pretty hard into the “he’s redeemable” camp, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume she knows what’s coming too. JJ apparently also told her during TFA who her parents were, so this conspiracy theory bullshit about Rian retconing it is ridiculous. So yeah, I hope we do get to see more of the process because I LOVE that BTS shit and seeing how they all work and what were their motivating factors for the characters and seeing how things shifted from concept to movie–yes yes yes!

My gosh you guys, if you haven’t read this book, well, you better! This series is going to be a major motion picture this April 2019! Tbh, I haven’t read the Wattpad version of this. I discovered After last November 2018 when the first teaser trailer was released and I became curious about it and searched about the filming and stuff. I learned that this is a worldwide phenomenon and hell, I’m missing out a lot of things. So I just went on to Twitter and searched #AfterMovie and that’s where I found out about it-- the cast, the filming, the release, the plot. And yep, I’ve read about the bet. Been spoiled, oof. Take note, I haven’t read the book yet that time. So by December, I started downloading Epubs of the Series. And SHIT, I’m hooked. And I’m officially part of the fandom. After We Collided #2

I really liked that in this book, we could read some chapters from Hardin's POV too, that made the story even more interesting. And oh, fucking Trevor. 9 DAYS had me sobbing! And at the very end her father shows up. Apparently he’s homeless and is still a drunk.

After We Fell #3

So much happened in this book!! Tessa and Hardin go on a small vacation with Landon, Ken (Hardin’s father) and Karen and that’s where the problems start again.Tessa finds out that Hardin went behind her back and talked to the Seattle real estate agent she contacted, to prevent her from renting an apartment. Tessa is obviously furious because she’s going to Seattle in some days and she doesn’t have an apartment because of Hardin.

Hessa have broken up and Tess went to the frat house. She was drugged, almost filmed and almost raped!! Apparently Steph never liked Tessa and has some kind of obsession about Hardin and Dan wanted revenge because of what Hardin did to his sister. Well, after this, Zed takes Tessa to her mother’s house because she’s completely drugged and she barely moves and talks. Meanwhile, Molly calls Hardin and tells him what happened. And of course, Hardin goes after Tessa but only after beating the crap out of Dan. Hessa flew to England for the wedding of Hardin’s mom. Trish and Christian have a history that we will only understand in the next book.

After Ever Happy #4

The Hardin and Vance reveal before Trish’s wedding with Mike is the most tiring part! Tessa heads back to Washington alone. It takes terrible circumstances for Hardin to snap out of his stupidity and try to go get the girl he loves, but sadly this time Tessa may really be done with the back and forth with Hardin. Tessa’s dad passed away. She and Hardin took some time off. Hardin’s graduation, New York, sooo many things. Hardin offered Tessa marriage. But Tessa, isn’t ready yet. As years went by, they meet “casually” in Chicago. Hardin is now a big time author and Tessa just finished college. They met again in Landon’s wedding after months of casually meeting. They hit it off again. And Tessa mentioned if he still wants to marry her!!! I CANT FUCKING GET OVER THIS BOOK. So yeah, they’re married. Tess experienced a miscarriage. And later on, was blessed with two wonderful children with Hardin Scott.

G-Fest Coverage Day 2 + 3

Saturday morning i went to the panel for Kazuhiro Nakagawa (an Assistant Director on Shin Godzilla, and Writer/Director of 'Day of the Kaiju')

If you haven't seen Day of the Kaiju yet, check it out. its great

he was directing the crowd running scenes for the Kamata-kun attack and said he had to keep telling people to look lower (instead of way up at normal Godzilla height) - many people took this to imply a different monster other than Godzilla was attacking

When asked about how Higuchi and Anno worked together he laughed and said to ask Higuchi - he [politically] said "They both wanted to make the best film possible"

During the Soggy Noodles scene Anno kept sending them back because the noodles werent soggy enough - "He can still eat that"

When asked what he was working on now or next he laughed again and said "I'm on vacation"

They all have theories on the tail, but Anno won't confirm or deny

Michiru Ōshima - I ducked out part way through this panel

FIrst off, just wow on this panel - he seemed to shoot down a lot of the rumors we heard about production

The plan was always for Shin Godzilla to be CG --- This is why the tail is so long, because they wire constraints were gone so they could have a lot more freedom --- The puppets aren't complete because they were only intended for close up shots, however they didnt fit with the movie (i guess this the equivalent of the animation or stop motion in biollante)

Higuchi started off at Toho G'84, he did thinks like paint the wires to match the backdrop and give water to Satsuma, move the tail outside of the frame to give it more realism in frame without a wire setup

he spilled a lot of details on the Legendary deal with Toho, basically Shin had to come out in 2016 because American Godzilla 2 was supposed to be out in 2017 and they couldnt be out the same year. If Godzilla 2 had gotten pushed back to 2019 earlier, they would likely still be working on Shin Godzilla

Higuchi and Anno pitched a number of ideas with Godzilla mutating into something new (think the multiple headed concept art) - Toho said NO. so they had something turn into Godzilla instead

Higuchi does know what the front part of the first form (we only see the tail) looks like - but he didnt bring any pictures of it

The time he spent working on Daicon stuff seems magical and i want to go to there

They would film in public parks, and have look outs for cops and firemen before doing any pyro technics to keep out of trouble

Kaida was a bit of a mentor in this set up, provided the poster for their Orochi movie

He made a comment about how America is portrayed in the film as military super power well beyond Japan (so there's some American "nationalism" for those out there that are hung up on that)

At the Shin Godzilla screening he was joking a lot, he "apologized" for things - like the American plane at the end was actually a Japanese plane they painted, and that they thought Satomi's english was very good but he was sorry we didn't think so. Not sure how much of it was subversive jabs at the criticisms that he heard from the American fandom, but i thought it was funny. He also kept trying to walk off stage to the point RSF and Nakagawa had to jokingly hold him in place.

He had two new indie films to debut that only a few people have seen in Japan - they were just was great as G and Gehara -- Zone - Felt very much like G. Lots of people spitting blood ----Taguchi - "i love violence" but can't put it in Ultraman, so I put it in my indie work ---- short and brutal, but the pacing and the reveals work so damn good, you had a room full of kaiju fans simultaneously gasping and reacting -- 701 - a comedy with a bit of adult humor ---- fans of a certain Ultraman X actress should probably seek this out ---- the comedy works really well. the timing is great, this was a big hit with the audience

Chapter Thirteen : PARIS IS BURNING

Who hasn’t seen Paris is Burning ? Apparently, a lot of people.

Presented at the Toronto Film Festival in 1990 and made available to the general public the next year, Paris is Burning is a documentary feature film which chronicles the life of African-American, Latino gay and transgender communities through their love of the ball scene subculture. Wait. What is the ball scene ? — Give me a minute, fool.

The movie was conceived and directed by Jennie Livingston, a Yale student who after studying photography and painting started getting an interest in film while living in New York City. They came across two young men in Washington Square Park voguing and… Wait. What is voguing ? — Don’t you have any patience ? IN. A. MINUTE. She then went to her first ball (wait, what is… — shut up. Just shut up and listen) and filmed what was going on for a class assignment. That’s when she met Venus Xtravaganza.

Wait. Who is Venus Xtravaganza ? Well, great question at the right time. Venus was a transgender performer whose life became of the main emotional and narrative arcs of the movie. When arriving in New York after being basically kicked out of her New Jersey family home, she joined the House of Xtravaganza — and before you start asking anymore question, a House is a collective groups of performers serving a surrogate family structure that also compete in the ball scene in order to win trophies, prestige and respect. At the time of filming, Venus was an aspiring model. She joined the scene in 1983. Unfortunately, she was murdered on christmas day 1988, while the movie was still undergoing sessions of shooting. Her killer was never found.

Venus is just one example of the incredible gallery of characters Paris is Burning offers us for 78 terrific minutes.

Angie Xtravaganza : founding member, Mother of house Xtravaganza and mentor or Venus, this extraordinary transgender performer was an active member of the ball culture. She too died just a few years after the release of the documentary, at the age of 28.

Pepper LaBeija : from House LaBeija, who took over from Crystal as the head of the house, a titled she kept for over 30 years. A drag queen and fashion designer, she won close to 250 trophies during her time in the ball scene.

Dorian Corey : Drag queen. Fashion Designer. She does most of the explanations about the cultural key expressions of the queer and ball lives. She was the founder of House of Corey. She died the same year as Angie Xtravaganza, also due tocomplications from Aids.

Octavia St. Laurent : An activist trans woman and ball performer who went on to become an Aids educator and LGBT Icon.

Willi Ninja : now known as the godfather of voguing, a gay dancer and choreographer. His moves were the principal “inspirations” of the 1990 Vogue movement of the mainstream pop music scene.

Paris Dupree : a drag performer, founding member and mother of the now legendary house of Dupree. The movie takes its name from one of Paris Dupree’s annual ball theme.

There’s also Sol Pendavis, Freddie Pendavis, Junior Labeija… So many incredible personalities and vibrant human beings immortalized on screen.

To go back to Livingston’s journey, she used the images and audio recordings she got to make a teaser/trailer for a potential movie she could film on the ball scene. That gave her enough funds to start following those people around. It took seven years to complete the movie, as the funds were coming from at least 10 separate sources, shooting in 16mm was expensive and some additional material were important to capture after the death of Venus.

At its core, the movie explores the elaborately-structured ball competitions in which contestants, adhering to a very specific category, must “walk” the non-runway. They were judged on their dance talent, quality of clothing and realness of their drag. Most of the editing alternates between footage of balls and interviews with the main “cast”. Through those interviews, we get a glimpse of the subgayculture the general public is missing : the idea of gender roles, the meaning behind every ball, the character’s personal stories that reflected the dreadfulness of their societal situations. Obviously, the film also explores delicate subjects matters such as Aids (a rarely evoked subject back then), racism, poverty, violence, homophobia and also the lives of sex workers in the mid-80s. For the first time on a big screen, people got to really talk about what it’s like to go through a sex reassignment surgery and the difference between being a drag perform, a transvestite and a transgender person.

It is incredibly touching to see those kids, most of them no more than 25, talking about their dreams of fame and fortune, desperately trying to get a glimpse of that through the ball scene, going as far as stealing clothes in store to have something to wear and compete for the honor your their families. As the queer community was still unrecognized by society — especially in the 80s when the Reagan administration were letting people die on the street — , those people were trying to earn a status they called “legendary”. At a time when they didn’t know for how long they’ll be before being taken away by the AIDS virus, their strength of spirit is heartwarming.

It is interesting to note though that the primary result of Paris is Burning’s release was not actually shading a light on those who are dying, but to give mainstream media a new obsession : Voguing.

Now, time for one of your fucking stupid question. Wait. What is Voguing ? Well, legends say that Paris Dupree, mother of the Legendary House Dupree, attended an after hours nightclub called Footsteps and there, two Gay Black men were throwing shade (shade : a backhanded compliment) at each other. Paris had a copy of Vogue magazine in her bag. She took it out and started dancing then suddenly stopped, posing to the beat of the music imitating the models’s poses. That “provocation” was returned in kind by the two Gay Black Men, which turned into a friendly competition. The word voguing was taken from the magazine that started it all. Though disputed, this theory is incredibly compelling. Less disputing is the fact that Paris Dupree was the inventor of the competition categories since it was her who introduced them in her House’s first ball in 1981.

Anyway, one of the dance’s inspirations is also the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs. You take pose and stretch your body into the most wonderful positions possible. Everybody knows what Voguing is, even if you are Vanessa Hudgens and you’ve just been introduced to it recently ‘I’m sooo into Voguing right now!” They are currently three distinct styles of voguing at the moment : the OLD WAY (a formation of lines, symmetry and precision in graceful, fluid-like actions. Historically performed as a duel between two rivals) the NEW WAY (more rigid movements couples with limb contortions at the joints and “arms control” such a tutting and locking. It has been described as a modified form of mime and was created to display the dancer’s dexterity) the VOGUE FEM (extreme exaggerated feminine movements influences by the old, the new and also ballet, jazz and modern dance. It can be dramatic or soft, and has 5 main subcategories — Duckwalk, Catwalk, hands, Floorwork and Spins & Dips).

The term “Vogue” and subsequent dance moves were put into the mainstream zeitghest on March 27, 1990 when Madonna released her new single, inspired by the gay underground scene. The song was created as part of the soundtrack for Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy and went quickly to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for three consecutive weeks. Madonna was praised for bringing the subculture ball scene in the fore front of music, but don’t ever think for a second that she invented anything. At best, it’s a great song that serves as an homage. At worst, it’s a complete steal and culture appropriation that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Ironically, Voguing was invented by people striving to look like Vogue Models while in the end, the general public (and Madonna herself) were trying to look more like them. Beautiful, if you take a second to think about it.

Upon its release, Paris is Burning received incredible reviews from critics and won several big awards, including a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. It was named one of 1991’s best films by The Los Angeles Times, The Washington post and Time Magazine, among others.

Unsurprisingly, the movie failed to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. The country was just getting over their Reagan-influenced ideals and the subject matter of AIDS and homosexuality would not hit the Oscars until a couple of years later, when Jonathan Demme, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Bruce Springsteen teamed up to make an unforgettable oscar-worthy movie called Philadelphia.

A question you didn’t ask is : What is the legacy of Paris is Burning ? Well you see, other than an incredible movie by itself, Paris is Burning is also a tool for queer youth to explore and use when necessary. For the scholars and students of this period of time, it is an extremely rare and precise examination of race, class and gender. For queer people, it’s a way to meet their ancestors, since most of them died within a few years after production wrapped.

Paris is Burning’s legacy also lives on with Ryan Murphy’s new tv show, Pose, which debuted on FX in June 3rd, 2018. Quite revolutionary on its own merit as it employs actual transgender people to play transgender people on screen. It is the biggest LGBTQ+ ensemble cast and crew in the History of television, with Janet Mock becoming the first transgender woman of color to write and direct an television episode. Pose follows the lives of transgender women and gay men in the New York ballroom scene of 1987, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic was growing stronger and deadlier. Truth be told, employing transgender women to be transgender women is a liberating thing for the viewer, very much in the tradition of Paris is Burning. You forgive the first couple of episode where the acting is not always as good as it should be but if you’re patient, your eyes will tear up, your face will crack and your hips will move. Season 2 started this week. An essential show.

Paris is Burning gave us life, gave us pose, gave us everything. It’s a piece of work so precious it will live on until life on earth ceases to exist. And for those ballroom performers who appeared in the film, whether they’re still here with us or departed, they truly deserve the status of “legendary”.
