Part Two

“The senator will be in contact with you as soon as he can,” you assured. “Thank you for calling. Good-bye.”

You disconnected the call and let the comlink fall onto your desk with a clatter. Thankfully, Senator Julgum hadn’t come back to the office yet - he hated any unnecessary noise.

No wonder no one had wanted this job.

The official word around the Senate was that Julgum was high-profile enough that he needed to have an official assistant rather than a rotating cast of senatorial aides. It was plausible enough, especially considering Julgum’s recent quest to eradicate some of the crime that ran rampant on his home world of Farrfin.

But you listened when you moved through the expansive halls of the Galactic Senate: no senatorial aides had volunteered to work for Julgum, likely because of his plutocratic views. The aide system had been largely unsympathetic, assigning aides regardless of their preference… until Julgum’s longest-serving aide had been repeatedly exposed to dangers on the job. From the stories you heard, those dangers included everything from blaster fire to a sabotaged transport.

And so the Senate had opted to make this position a permanent one, drawing from a list of candidates outside of the aide system. You earned a higher salary than the aides did, but the potential for danger was literally written into your contract. And there would be certain consequences if you quit before completing the full length of that contract.

It felt a little as though you had sold yourself to the Hutts, but an assistant with experience working with the Galactic Senate could get a position virtually anywhere in the galaxy. That wasn’t much of an incentive, but it was enough of one to keep picking up the comms when people tried to contact Julgum.

A piercing chime rang through your small office, situated just in front of Senator Julgum’s much larger set of rooms. Speaking of…

“Senator Julgum’s office,” you said after accepting the call. The practiced words flowed from you in your most professional tone. “How may I help you?”

There was a moment’s pause on the other end of the comm - almost too subtle to catch, but definitely there. “Yes, I need to speak with the senator.”

You nodded, knowing full well that the person on the other end of the line couldn’t see you. “And your name?”

There was a quiet sigh and you smiled despite yourself. The caller - they sounded male and fairly young, if you were to guess - definitely didn’t have an appointment to speak with Julgum, but you had to go through the game. It was what the pageantry of Coruscant (and the Senate in particular) demanded.

“That doesn’t matter, right?” he asked. “I won’t take up much of Senator Julgum’s time, but I really need to talk to him.”

“Of course! I understand that it’s likely an urgent matter,” you reassured. “As soon as you give me your name and I make sure that you have an appointment, I can put the call through to Senator Julgum.”

“It is an urgent matter,” the man insisted. “So urgent that I don’t have time to deal with power-hungry secretaries who insist on delaying me to feed their own sense of importance.”

“That sounds terribly frustrating,” you agreed commiseratingly. “But I’m an assistant, not a secretary.”

“Okay, assistant,” he said. “I need you to work with me here.”

“I would be happy to. Just give me your name.”

The noise of irritation that came from the other end of the comms lifted your spirits and the corners of your lips. “Wait, I know Julgum’s last assistant. She can vouch for me. Can I speak to Sonrir?”

That, at least, confirmed that this person really was familiar with Julgum and the way he ran things. Sonrir was the assistant you had replaced. Her position had always been temporary, a short-term coverage after the original aide had quit after so much exposure to danger. Sonrir had been glad to leave the office and work for - as she said - “anyone else”, so you didn’t bother wasting sympathy on the fact that she was gone.

“I’m sorry, Sonrir no longer works in this office.”

Your disgruntled conversational partner gave a derisive snort. “I wonder how long you’ll last, then.”

You laughed despite yourself. Judging from the silence on the other end of the line, the reaction had been an unexpected one. “I ask myself the same thing every day. Now, your name, please?”

The click on the line wasn’t unexpected, but you found yourself inexplicably disappointed. That conversation had easily been the most entertaining thing to happen since you had started working with Julgum.

With a small sigh, you set aside the comlink and reached for a datapad containing the senator’s schedule of appearances. Back to monotony, then…

So, the idea of the Bad Batch (minus Echo, plus Emerie) being the other half of the Nulls has consumed my goddamn mind. Therefore, as you do when an idea takes up residence in your frontal lobe for the foreseeable future, here's some headcanons.

The Bad Batch (except for Echo and Omega, who have no clue what's going on) hate the Nulls. As in, "murder on sight" hate them. From an in-universe perspective, there could be a myriad of reasons, ranging from feelings of abandonment to resentment over them having a better life. From a writer's standpoint, it's because I love me some good old familial dysfunction and angst.

The more...unhinged...tendencies the Nulls are known for manifests in the Bad Batch more as "let's jump off this cliff and use explosives to direct our fall!" and less as "hey, check out my new skin gloves!" Of course, if you push them too far, it's a different story. In order of least to most likely to pull a "lemme turn you into an art installation," it's Omega, Wrecker, Hunter, Crosshair, and Tech. Omega wouldn't do that, at least not at this point in her life. Wrecker, when enraged, goes for the just-hit-them solution. Hunter's a decent human being and usually wouldn't do something like that...Unless his kid's been kidnapped by a crazy Imperial doctor for the fifteenth time, on which point he starts becoming a little deranged. Crosshair hovers close to the line but wouldn't do it to someone unprovoked. Tech is a special case, in that he has to be pushed, but when he is, the results make the rest of the Nulls go "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST."

The Nulls want to reunite with their lost siblings and build a relationship, but that's kind of hard to do when said siblings (except Omega) keep trying to kill them on sight and none of them were built for intricate and deeply complicated emotional issues. Still, they persist. Eventually, they could probably get to the level of "awkward conversations" but it'll take a lot of work.

The Bad Batch have what makes the Nulls superior to regular clone troopers, plus their unique enhancements (which in this version are less defects and more Nala Se picking an attribute for each of them and cranking it up to 11). They feel that it makes them better than the Nulls, something they're not shy about expressing.

Emerie is the same height as her estranged (I can't think of a word that applies to this specific situation but this one will do) brothers, because I stan a tall queen.

Nala Se is smug as hell whenever she sees Orun Wa. "CT-9904 just broke all records for accuracy, CT-9902 discovered a new element, CT-9903 crushed beskar like it was paper, and CT-9901 tracked a man through five systems and a solar storm. What are your clones doing, again?"

There is no understating the sheer "wtf" that goes through the Nulls' heads when they first see Omega. But, of course, this is Omega. Imagine the cutest image of her you've seen, fanart or canon. That's what the Nulls see when they meet her. Unsurprisingly, the Nulls, who got the Mandalorian gene to adopt anything that isn't nailed down, go from "wtf" to "so smol 🥰" in roughly a minute.

Kal Skirata is in the corner. His attempt to interact with the Bad Batch did not go well. He casually calls Hunter "son," as he does with various characters, and the resulting explosion puts a thermal detonator to shame. Since it's clear that his presence is not making things better, he's sort of just in the corner.

The rest of Clan Skirata, and associates, are staying out of this. Gilamar and Vau took one look and retreated to the bar because they know better than to get involved. Everyone else witnessed one of the less acrimonious encounters and collectively decided that they are not jumping into the emotional equivalent of a pit of rabid wolverines.

Echo is the go-between. He does not want to be the go-between. But he's the only neutral party in this thing aside from Omega, and the rest of the Batch don't trust the Nulls with her.

Spare a though for 99. He raised four of these guys, often with the aid of leashes. Truly, he is an unsung hero of the Clone Wars

What is Maze in the resuarant au 🤔 Hitman connected to their mafia family? Hitman for a rival mafia family? Customer who is secretly a hitman (not with any family)? Customer who is just a normal guy?? Health inspector that Ordo has beef with??! 😂

I went with the health inspector because it's hilarious to think about. :D

Imagine this overworked guy, who once came in as a customer and eated the best dishes ever served, especially the desserts, only to get the assignment to check this restaurant because someone in the apartment complex made a complaint about strange smells.

Maze single handedly try to keep this establishment from closing, making sure he is the one who comes and not other colleagues, while trying to avoid the accusations he accepts bribe from them. Just because one time he ate a most delicous strawberry cheesecake made by that psycho chef, who doesn't even have the qualifications and the necessary papers to run a kitchen. The only bribe he accepts is more strawberry cheesecake.

Maze is the necessary bad in their life. They have to sit through his presentations about how to make the kitchen more safe for them and the restaurant for the customers... but sometimes he doesn't get paid enough for this shit.

And once again I took the opportunity to draw Maze with glasses <3

Maze: Alright, aside from that dent on the fire extinguisher, the dining area seems fine. Kal: But of course, my sons are doing their best to comply to the regs.

Someone please adopt Dogma. The two plot ideas I keep thinking about is either 1) The Bad Batch meets him and decides “our reg, now” or 2) Clan Skirata takes one look at him and go “i’ve only had Dogma for a day and a half, but if anything happens to him, i’ll kill everyone around me.” (I may have my problems with Kal Skirata, but have no issues with his desire to adopt anything within thirty kilometers that is left unattended.)

I know that Mandalorians and Jedi don't exactly get along, but are there any EU Mandos that were sympathetic to the Jedi Order, or at least potentially saw them as allies rather than enemies?

We have a few examples from kotor all the way up to legacy of the force

( a lot of the Jedi they do befriend don’t really follow the code fully so it makes sense they do get along)

Wellll the first most obvious one is revan of course ( I still think revan is Mando but that’s a whole other can of worms) revan and canderous working together from the beginning of kotor and the mentions of it in kotor 2 is brilliant ( I will not mention the dam novel it’s insulting to the game) (kotor 1+2)

In the mandalorian wars we also have zayne carrick he got taken into the mandalorian ranks which wasn’t the best situation but he did befriend a mandalorian family (mandalorian wars comic series)

In swtor we have shae vizla and torian if you play republic side (being a Mando though is the best in swtor)

Well obviously we can count etain and bardan aswell and all the surviving Jedi that joined clan skirata (republic commando)

You can also count fenn shysa with leia Han and Luke and the rebel alliance

And durning the vong war boba and his mandalorians fought beside a Jedi in secret

Well obviously Jaina solo with boba fett mirta gev and bevin and Medrit and their daughter and her children so Jaina kinda wins lol she got a whole load of mandos she worked and talked with lol (sintas kinda counts) (legacy of the force)

I may have missed a few pls correct me if I have
