Day 2 of fankid week: Family/relationship with Kaia, my Kate/Keith (Vatonageshipping I think is called), and his very complicated relationship with his step dad and half sister.
A bit of info for my AU first: First of I always saw Ice as the same age as Sven tbh but even then Kate and him don't get together in the Au until both of them are in their 30s. Now, about Kaia, Kate and Keith dated in their 20s and Kate got pregnant ofc, despise that both of them agree that they worked better as friends than a couple but still co-parent and there is no bad blood between them. Now why does Kaia hates Ice and his half sister so much? That is up to you to guess

1) Thinking about expanding Ice’s present-day roster. Not sure how or with what yet. But at least adding a grass-type in there.
2) For sure, the three Pokemon we see him controlling in-game were not the only Pokemon he made use of during Team Dim Sun; there would have been several others he had at hand for Miniremo control. Also, neither the Froslass or the Garchomp were his own (not Princess or Daigou). The Froslass was one that was living in Almia Castle and he picked up along the way because he saw it and why not he likes them; the Garchomp was brought back from the Haruba area and placed under his command because he has experience with them. Gallade, however, was his own.
He didn’t really use Miniremo with his own Pokemon because there wasn’t honestly a point (and he was, innately, a little averse to it). He did use the Incredible Machine with them, because direct mind control is far superior to pressing a bunch of buttons really fast. It was more like what you see when you have a Trainer and Pokemon who are so in sync with each other that they don’t need to exchange verbal communication (only not really because it was actually Bad).
Given that Miniremo were only developed within about a year before the game plot really started kicking off (because Isaac was the one who made that whole thing possible), and prior to that Gigaremo seem to have been very nonspecific and limited in what Pokemon they could control and what actions they could have them perform. Ice having his own Pokemon and being experienced with them, in a region where that’s somewhat of a rarity outside of Ranger affiliates, was part of what made him valuable to President Hall. (Along with the other two Sinis Trio members as per my headcanon. We got no explanation why they’re his Favourites so this is what I’ve got rn.)

Finally made a reference sheet for the Dim Sun members in my Pokemon Ranger Shadows of Almia Resocialization AU!
The story resumes 4 years after Operation Brighton was successfully completed. Hastings and Erma learn that the higher ranked Ex Team Dim Sun members are supposed to be released into early probabtion time. When they visit the former criminals they realize that while they have recovered from the effects of the Dark Crystal and don't seem to pose a big threat to Almia anymore they aren't quite decent people and useful members of society yet.
So with all of her chivalry Erma decides to get the Union involved in their probabtion time. Together with Hastings she comes up with a program that seeks to reform and resocialize the former villains.
Here's a short preview of the resocialization program document:
Every Ex-Dim-Sun-Member will be assigned a partner and mentor figure from the Union who holds authority over them but also takes responsibility for their actions during probation.
2. Every Ex-Dim-Sun-Member will receive a weekly schedule filled with tasks similar to community service.
3. Every Ex-Dim-Sun-Member has to support their mentor and must contribute to their job in a positive way
4. Criminal activities and prohibited behaviors of the attendants of this program will be penalized with the program and probation time being revoked.
...
The mentorship relations
Wyatt (Blake) Hall - Rhythmi
Kincaid - Kate
Wheeler - Wendy
Ice - Murph
Lavana - Keith
Heath - Sven
Wyatt: A bit self-conscious and still haunted by his past crimes and immense feelings of guilt. But overall he is a pretty facile person and Rhythmi does not have any trouble with him. He is a flagship attendant of the program. Wyatt completes his tasks with honesty and nothing but good intentions for the people of Almia and his mentor. Sometimes he is a bit depressed but learning to be valuable to society and a good person improves his mental state more and more. Wyatt is not sure what he wants to do with his life yet but he feels inspired to help people and Pokemon as much as he can to try and make up for his past mistakes.
Kincaid: While he understands that he had to face prison for the list of crimes he commited he is not happy with the program being forced onto him. He was an independent man before Team Dim Sun and he can find a way to live an honest life by himself. Kincaid still believes that he doesn't need to have faith in other people to achieve his goals, no matter their moral alignment. Kate acting as some sort of mentor is ridiculous to him, what could he learn from a young adult anyway? Kate and Kincaid's partnership is held back by their opposite world views and distrust. They get into arguments a lot to the point it's hindering the program. Hastings decides to cuff them together so they have to learn to work as a team. Kincaid's additionally helping Hastings with strategizing for missions and Kate has to attend every meeting of them being nerds, obviously.
Wheeler: Wendy and Wheeler get along as soon as they realize how much they can learn from each other. She expects him to have his own opinion and view of things and helps him to grow as a person. His biggest weakness was the dependency on his former boss and his approval. Once Wendy learns about his talent for cooking they spend a lot of time doing that together. (Much to the other Union members' delight.) Wheeler tries to be a friendly fella but has his snarky moments anyway. He especially loves annoying Ice and Kincaid as they both seem to be not improving much as people.
Ice: The usually cool ex boss of the Sinis Trio seems to have fallen into some sort of rebellious phase. Murph is trying his best to have Ice do the tasks he is assigned and still be a diligent Union member. But all of his attempts only motivate Ice to be more problematic. If Murph didn't know any better he would say Ice wants to go back to prison because that's easier than trying to improve. It's the path of least resistance and doesn't require Ice to work hard. With some time and lots of stupid pranks he begins to feel guilty for causing Murph so much trouble. Ultimately he is impressed by Murph not giving up on him despite his behavior and really tries to change for the better.
Lavana: Out of all the ex members Lavana for sure is the most ambitious attendant. Shortly after the program starts she announces that she wants to pick up her dream of becoming a Pokemon Ranger again. Despite some protests from Hastings she receives the position as a trainee Ranger at the Union from Erma. She is still a little princess at the start but Keith and her new job help her realize that some things in life are only attainable through hard work and passion. The people and Pokemon of Almia showing gratitude is something new but Lavana feels very accomplished every time she helped someone. However, she gets gradually annoyed with Keith being absent so often, mentally and physically. Somehow he is obsessed with making sure Kate is alright.
Heath: Sven has no trouble with Heath, he may be a slow learner but he is also very patient and obedient. Heath seems to be glad that the Union is taking care of him and sees the program as his 2nd chance in life. It appears that he is more worried about how some of his former colleagues don't take this seriously. Sven does not feel any deeper attachment towards Heath, unlike some of his Ranger colleagues. For him this is just a job that needs to be done. Heath looks up to Sven and admires his confidence and sense of morality. He becomes increasingly helpful on missions and proves to be a gentle giant when it comes to caring about his friends and former colleagues. To him Dim Sun was his family.
Thanks for reading my little introduction post.

Listen I know Ice was part of the Sinis Trio and yadda yadda but who gave him the right to be that fine while being like. A bad guy?
Don’t mind me just reading through old ranger logs.

For twst x boboiboy how about doing first meeting. It would be interesting to see that.
I'm assuming that you meant Boboiboy meeting with the rest of the NRC crew? OK 😀
This'll be long, so I'll put it under the cut.
Grim
Got caught immediately by Hali and got electrocuted. Grim was confused and legit thought that humans reproduce by splitting themselves into many humans.
Later on when Grim gets along with Boi, he has a LOT of petting and scratching priveleges. It's usually Thorn, Blaze, Cyclone and Quake that gives him pets. Ice just cuddles with him, Solar pets him. Sometimes. And Hali is a no because Grim's fur ends up staticky.
Papers clings to him and when he gets near Lucius the other cat's fur also stands up. It sets up a chain of reaction that ends up with Savanaclaw student's fur standing up.
Heartslabyul
Ace
Same as usual. Except he has to fight a fire cat and four people.
Gets along with Trio Troublemaker and Quake swore he will have a full head of white hair by the end of the school year.
Deuce
Meets when they were chasing Ace. Ace was running for his life because who wouldn't if they're being chased by a livid thunder elemental?
Quake reminds him of his mother. Accidentally called Quake mom once.
Cater
Was surprised when he saw Boboiboy split himself. After he kicks them out, he literally planted himself face first on the ground because of exhaustion. He never felt this tired when using his UM.
Gets along with nearly every elemental, but especially the Photosynthesis Duo. Solar makes sick lighting and Thorn can make any flower bloom.
Trey
Cooking buds, cooking buds! They found out that they both came from a family of people who make food for a living and gains each other respect. Boboiboy, through sheer force of will and spite towards the cheapskate crow called Crowley, manages to make cocoa powder that tastes exactly like Tok Aba's.
After Riddle's Overblot, Trey helps Boboiboy set up shop to make money because that stingy crow doesn't give him any currency of this world. Ringgit takde nilai kat sini, woi.
Riddle
Their first meeting didn't go well. Boboiboy split in three, Gempa makes sure the braincell trio didn't cause trouble, much to Deuce's denial, Thunderstorm went back to dorm to get the hot cocoa, and Cyclone went to buy food.
The moment Riddle says something about Boboiboy's parents, Thunderstorm came, gives the cocoa to Ace, looks at Riddle and tell him to run.
Later, Trey finds Riddle on the cafeteria floor, cooked to perfection.
Savanaclaw
They're chill later on. Boboiboy makes some cocoa based pastries for Riddle to try.
Leona
He gets his tail stepped like canon, but before he can yell and threaten the person that woke him up from his nap, Solar had already teleported away with the gardening tools.
His OB Phantom gets punched square in the face by Quake's golem.
After the entire ordeal he sometimes sleeps on Ice's water ball. Sometimes, he'd finds himself with a flower crown whenever he wakes up, courtesy of Thorn. The first time it happens the flower crown has rafflesia and corpse flower petals. How and where Thorn finds it, no one knows. It's only that one time, though.
Ruggie
Boboiboy doesn't really notice Ruggie the first time.
After Leona's Overblot, they get along fairly quick. Boboiboy gives Ruggie some free samples for his shop. And free food in exchange for his help around the shop.
Jack
He kinda reminds Boboiboy of Captain Kaizo. Strict, but soft inside. Is shocked to find out that Jack is sixteen. You would've think befriending aliens with long lifespan like Tok Kasa and Maripos would've prepare him for this.
Boboiboy introduces him to soccer/British football and they play it whenever they get the chance. First time Jack plays as goalkeeper he caught the ball with his mouth.
Octavinelle
Azul
He's very tempted to make sambal sotong from this guy.
Azul gets along with Ice because he's a very chill person to get along with. Also Gempa because he reminds him if his mom, too. Mama Gempa is best Gempa. Fight me.
Jade
Suspicious. Boboiboy is tempted to make an eel dish out of this guy.
Thorn and him gets along splendidly. Thorn excitedly making secies of mushrooms and fungi that can't be found on Sage Island or on certain conditions. The other elementals sides eyes Jade whenever they hang out.
Floyd
At least being hugged by an eel is better than being hugged by a cactus alien (Gurunda cactus people) and a flaming rock alien (Roktaroka).
Floyd finds every elementals interesting. He likes to tease Blaze the most because he's very similar in temperament to Riddle. Thunderstorm is no fun because he always dissapear when Floyd comes.
Scarabia
Kalim
Rays of sunshine. Please wear two sunglasses like Commander Koko Ci to recent yourselves from going blind. Kalim is probably the closest thing Boboiboy would have to a sibling, next to his elementals.
Thanks to Kalim, Boboiboy now has an abundance of ingredients to use.
Jamil
Suspicious person number two.
After Jamil's Overblot Jamil's bedroom is filled with praying mantises. No one knows where they came from except for a certain element who used to belong to King Balakung.
He's chill with every elemental, honestly. Surprised by Frostfire's existence when Boboiboy offers Jamil how to cook Tom Yam Sakti (using Twisted Wonderland ingredients) using elemental powers (or magic, in this case).
Pomefiore
Vil
Thinks Vil is a girl and got confused. Whenever Vil gets fussy Boboiboy calls him Mak Cik (auntie).
After the Overblot Vil reminded him of Yaya and Ying. Except for the study crazy part, of course. Always talks about how round Boboiboy's cheeks are.
Rook
Scary person. Suspicious person number three.
Rook gets along with Thorn simply because of how random they both can be. Rook is also one of the few people in school who knows that Boboiboy and Crewel are NOT related.
Epel
Thinks Epel is a girl, too.
They bond over riding bikes and magic wheels. Epel is very excited to hear about Boboiboy's adventure across the galaxy. Thinks he's very manly.
Ignihyde
Idia
They only meet in the hallways before.
Surprisingly, Idia likes Cyclone the most. For some reason the wind element makes him happy since he wanted nothing more than to be free. Solar is a close second due to his knowledge.
Very surprised to see Sopan because Cyclone and Solar are nothing like this rhyming gentleman.
Ortho
Please wear heavy eye protection when he, Boboiboy and Kalim is around. I mean it.
Ortho is curious about Boboiboy. His scans show him that Boboiboy isn't really human. Not fully human, but then again he is from another world, so maybe it's different there?
Ortho is very curious about power spheres, and wanted to meet Ochobot. Ortho thinks that Boboiboy and Ochobot's relationship is similar to him and Idia's.
Diasomnia
Malleus
Malleus come across Thorn first. Then came across the others later. He doesn't know about his elemental split, and thinks that they're all the same person (which, they are)
Very surprised when Boboiboy splits into seven.
He likes every elemental, but he likes the original the most. Because he's the full set.
Lilia
Maripos, that's you?
Reminded Boboiboy of Tok Aba. Old people who is really good in doing young people things. Lilia is not allowed in Boboiboy's kitchen. He had been banned and blackmailed multiple times.
Silver
Sleepy person. Like Ice.
Silver can sometimes be seen sleeping on Ice's water spheres. Thorn sometimes make a flower crown and a full jewelry set when Silver's asleep.
Sebek
Loud.
He and the more hot-headed elementals gets into a screaming match. Which then escalated into a full-on brawl.
He and Gentar are at odds with eachother. Both being too proud to accept eachother faults.

Word Count: 3000+ (oneshot)
[AO3]
Genre: Friendship/Crime
Characters: Ice, Heath, Lavana, their Pokemon
Summary: After fleeing Altru Tower, Ice, Heath, and Lavana rush to escape Almia amid the chaos caused by the Incredible Machine's activation. However, in order to make a clean getaway, they'll all have to make amends with the starter Pokemon they've neglected in favor of their criminal careers.
Written for the @captureonzine
~0~
Ice had never considered himself a bad guy. Criminal, definitely. Not nice, sure. But not a bad guy.
Lavana was self-important and more than a little sadistic. Heath, reckless and shortsighted, had never matured much past adolescence. Ice himself was pragmatic more than anything else. At least, that was how Ice had always viewed the Sinis Trio.
Joining Team Dim Sun had been just another practical decision. If someone was going to dominate the world, of course he wanted to do whatever he could to not only be on their side, but be top dog in their ranks. Anybody would want the same thing, and anybody with some backbone would try it.
How could he have foreseen this?
The Incredible Machine should have lived up to its name: granting them all control over the world’s Pokémon, the likes of which nobody had ever imagined. Likewise, Ice had never had a problem with Gigaremos: it just wasn’t efficient to capture, bond with, and train so many Pokémon. So he had traded his Pokéballs for laptops and...heavy little mailbox-coffeemaker-vacuum cleaner looking things.
It was nothing personal. Someone, however, clearly thought otherwise.
“Agh, come on!”
Those black eyes narrowed resentfully at him, before dissolving back into red film and retreating back into the Pokéball.
Okay, maybe trade hadn’t been quite the right word. He’d released his traditionally captured Pokémon upon joining, but of course he’d kept his starter, his partner, through it all, even if he didn’t show her off to his coworkers. Her Pokéball had been tucked protectively into an inside pocket of his coat since the beginning, but that show of loyalty didn’t appear to be enough for her.
“Forget it, Ice!” yelled Lavana, ducking behind Heath as his fist connected with the jaw of a wild Machoke that was trying in a mad rage to pummel them. “We need to go, if you want to hold us back we’ll leave you behind!”
Ice was sure. Fortunately, this was why he was the brains of this outfit.
“Yeah, good luck starting my boat without my keys.” Before Heath could decide that it would be easier to just tear his arms off and take the key, Ice repocketed the Pokéball and bolted through the forest after them. “The dock is this way, let’s move.”
He wondered if this was what it felt like to be a Pokémon under the thrall of a Gigaremo. There was a buzz in the air, a shakiness between his skull and his brain, that made him want to either tear his own head off or punch someone else’s in. No wonder it had made it so easy to sic Pokémon on anyone they pleased: he began to think he’d do anything, obey any command, if only it would relieve this awful feeling in his head.
Without realizing it until it was done, he smacked aside a shrieking Joltik leaping at his face, shuddering at the electric shock it sent through his bones. It would be better once they weren’t out in the open anymore. It had to be.
“There! Go through the bushes, the thick ones on the right! There’s a cave, and we can take the tunnels to the dock!”
Both Heath and Lavana yelled assent, and veered right...into a pile of rocks.
“Ice!” Lavana shrieked, and several Pokémon in the distance shrieked along with her. “Are you screwing with us!”
Ice ground his teeth, looking up at the bellowing Bastiodon knocking rocks around on the mountain ledges. “No. But they might be.”
Heath didn’t waste time squabbling. Upon seeing the boulders blocking their way, he grounded himself in a fighting stance, pulled back one huge fist, and threw his whole body into slamming it into a load-bearing rock near the bottom of the pile. For a moment, Ice was relieved to see his strength.
And that relief evaporated when Heath’s punch only put a shallow crack in the stone, instead of breaking it.
Both he and Lavana let out noises of frustration, but Heath only looked quizzically at his own hands.
“Hmm...is not working. Think I will need stronger fists.”
“Yeah, no kidding,” Ice and Lavana said together.
“Good, you agree.”
As his teammate had no pockets in his outfit, Ice wasn’t sure where he could possibly produce a Pokéball from, but produce one Heath did.
“...Oh,” said Ice, intelligently. “So you kept yours too?”
“Of course! Everything I learn about strength, I learn from partner.” Heath rubbed the Pokéball like a genie’s lamp. “I just hope he forgive me for neglect, yeah? Go!”
Heath tossed the Pokéball, and from it burst the last thing Ice had expected.
Well, maybe not the last thing. But an Electric-type wasn’t what he thought Heath would be keeping so close to him.
Lavana looked supremely unimpressed. “A Plusle? Really?”
Heath scratched the little Pokémon between its long red ears, smiling as it squeaked affectionately. “He does not look like much, I know. But he gets through much to be where he is today. He...what is play quote? ‘Though he be but little, he is fierce.’”
Ice swallowed a sigh. “All right. How about you prove it to us?”
“Of course!” Heath bellowed, striking a pose that his Plusle immediately copied. Their show was cut short when a powerful rumbling of the earth made them stumble. All four looked up to the top of the Incredible Machine, and could just make out a white-topped black figure, standing out even against the darkness.
“...Maybe not time to show off. Plusle! Thunder!”
Plusle shrilled assent, and raised its stubby arms. “Pluuuuuu-SLE!”
Ice could smell the static in the air and see Lavana’s hair start to frizz, just before a wicked thunderbolt split the sky and, fortunately, the boulders, too. The stone shattered like glass, and Heath bellowed triumphantly, Plusle shrilling along with him.
“Yes! We still got it, little buddy!”
“Plusle! Plusle!”
Lavana was already tugging on Ice’s sleeve. “Great, wonderful, we can celebrate later, when—”
A blast of sound and malice shook the sky and nearly knocked all four of them off their feet. Ice thought he recognized the silhouette of the Pokémon enveloped in the roiling storm clouds, and he truly, deeply hoped that he was wrong about it. From the looks on Heath and Lavana’s faces, he got the impression that he wasn’t.
“—if we make it out of here,” Lavana amended as they ducked into the mouth of the cave.
It was darker than dark in here, enough to give Ice the impression that if he just reached out and grabbed, he would be holding a fistful of crushed-velvet black. He knew that he knew the way, but guiding his teammates now was more difficult. Usually there was a Pikachu or an Electabuzz he could grab to light his way...
In their stead, Heath’s Plusle was on the job; it darted through their legs to take the lead, letting off Flash after Flash, and Ice immediately saw that there were pros and cons to this:
Pro: they were more than bright enough to light the way forward, and Ice knew he could take it from there.
Con: they were also bright enough to reveal all the Zubat and Sandshrew darting out of crevices and dropping off the ceiling and gunning for them.
Sure, they were small Pokémon, not much of a problem on their own, but a whole horde of them? And Incredible Machine-crazed, to boot? Yeah, this was trouble.
Heath skidded to a stop to command Plusle, calling directions and attacks with every Flash. But while they were busy with Quick Attacks and Thunder Waves, their progression through the cave system had slowed to a crawl. Ice had a brief fantasy of the Pokéball in his coat pocket springing open and its inhabitant leaping to defend him, but it remained stubbornly shut.
Lavana, it seemed, was taking a more proactive approach. One Flash, she was fishing around at the base of her ponytail; the next, she was fixing a Pokéball in her palm with as intimidating a glare as she could.
“Listen, you might be mad at me, but this is more important, all right?”
She tossed the ball to the ground, and when it popped open, out came a sleek and shimmering Ninetales in a graceful pouring of light. Ice couldn’t get a clear look at its face, but its disdain was palpable.
“Don’t give me that. I haven’t made you do anything you didn’t want to, have I? I just need you to light up a little fire so we can get out of this stupid cave, all right?”
She received a spiteful hiss and flourish of tails in her face in response.
“Oh, come on! I’m sorry that I made you stay in your Pokéball for so long, and that I didn’t listen when you tried to tell me Dim Sun was bad news, and that none of their Pokémon food was up to your standards! There, is that enough for you?”
Ninetales sat down and turned its long nose even higher up in the air, even closing its eyes to pretend its Trainer and her predicament didn’t exist.
Lavana stomped her foot in frustration. “Ugh! You’re ridiculous! I don’t know why I even kept you around!”
Ice, finishing up spraying a shrieking Zubat in the face with Repel, took a second to give her a flat look. “Don’t suppose you’ve got any more cooperative Pokémon?”
“Like you and your giant kiddie float can talk! Listen, Ninetales, I...” Lavana huffed and rapidly tapped her foot in a way that most would call irritable, but that Ice recognized as nervous. “If you don’t want to help me, fine, but...would you do it for my teammate’s Plusle over there?”
Ninetales opened its eyes, casting a supercilious glance over its shoulder.
“Yeah, look at it, all tiny and pathetic over there. How long is it supposed to keep this up? Are you really just going to sit there and let it do this all by itself?”
A thoughtful hint of a growl bubbled up from Ninetales’ throat. It considered Lavana’s plea, considered the way Plusle was starting to pant, considered Ice, who was now trying half-blindly to kick an attacking Sandshrew in the face. Fortunately for all of them, it didn’t take very long for it to come to a decision.
A fierce howl reverberated around the cave, and in the blink of an eye it was all awash in pinwheels of fire. Ninetales made short work of the smaller Pokémon nearby, and then lit a smaller, brighter flame, suspending it in the air above its snout like a lantern.
“Attagirl!” crowed Lavana, as they all surged forward again. “Just keep running, we know exactly where we’re going! Ice, tell her where we’re going!”
Ice rolled his eyes, but shared the lead with the Pokémon lighting their way, calling out the directions he had memorized as if he were driving a sled. Down, down, right, left, left, right, hard right, all the way down, and a slight left...
All the while the fire at Ninetales’ paws and Plusle’s electrified little body viciously smacking anything that moved kept their attackers at bay. When they finally burst out of the caves and onto the little crescent of wet sand that Ice had kept prepared for just such an occasion, the freezing night air lashing their skins and the scent of saltwater rushing up their noses. Both Pokémon’s tails flashed burning white, and they shot up in the air to knock the rocks above the opening down, filling up the exit so no human or Pokémon could follow them.
A bit preemptive, but Ice didn’t care: their ride out of Almia was right here. A modest white motorboat, more than big enough for three in his opinion, tied at the end of a short and creaky dock. He liked it well enough, though his teammates seemed to have misgivings.
“Is...so little,” Heath observed, rubbing his chin.
Lavana quirked an eyebrow, and it seemed to Ice that her Ninetales was somehow doing the same. “Are you sure it can get us all the way to the next region?”
“If you’d prefer to swim, be my guest,” said Ice, loping across the beach and down the dock. The boat swayed back and forth when he jumped into it, but it still held strong. “But as soon as I get it running, it’s going, so you better be on it if you want out the easy way.”
He didn’t look behind him as he made for the driver’s seat, but he was pleased to hear both of them and their Pokémon scrambling onboard. He fished the key out of his pants pocket, rammed it into the ignition, and turned it, eagerly awaiting the deep roar of the engine.
Krrrr-errr-err-ru-rur.
Ice’s mouth twisted, and he turned the key again with more vehemence than was really necessary. More puttering and clanking, and the boat still wouldn’t come to life.
His teammates, surprisingly, had the grace to keep quiet as he leapt from the boat. He didn’t miss their judgmental looks, though, as he sloshed through knee-deep water.
It didn’t make sense. No damage to the sides or bottom of the boat that he could see, the motor seemed to be all right, and in any case he had double checked the whole thing just a few days ago, preparing for the Incredible Machine’s activation and all the ways it could (and did) backfire. And yet the boat was inexplicably dead, their hopes of escape dashed just when they had come within reach. Just their luck — just their rotten, awful luck!
Ice swore louder and longer than he ever had in his life, his fist slamming against the side of the boat hard enough to dent it. And what did it matter, anyway? They were screwed, so much more than he had ever intended. He could barely hear the distant blasts in the sky over the scarlet roar of rage in his head.
Heath blinked in surprise, and Lavana just stared: neither of them had seen their leader lose his composure like this before. Even after his faltering on Altru Tower, after that stupid Ranger kid had blundered his way into another victory, he hadn’t betrayed anywhere near so much real emotion.
Ice breathed hard and slow through his nose, scraped knuckles still pressed against the side of the boat: the useless hunk of junk, he figured he ought to call it now.
“...Sorry, guys,” he growled through clenched teeth. “I don’t know what I overlooked, but...I don’t think we’re getting out of Almia tonight.”
The two glanced at each other — Heath’s Plusle chittering in distress on his shoulder — before Lavana spoke, hesitant for maybe the first time in her life.
“That’s, uh...that’s okay, Ice. But if it’s all the same to you, then...maybe it’s time to try the kiddie float?”
Ice snorted. “Even if that wasn’t the dumbest way possible to bring that up, she wouldn’t listen to me, anyway. Didn’t you see her, back in the forest? She hates me, just like your Ninetales can’t stand you.”
Lavana bit her lip and glanced at the floor of the boat, Ninetales looking almost surprised. Heath put a hand on her shoulder, his fingers thick enough to cover half her upper arm too.
“Ice, might be worth a try. Your starter, correct? Such a special bond, not easily broken.”
Ice couldn’t outright deny it. In the world of Pokémon Trainers, that was as basic a fact as the color of the sky.
“...Fine. But don’t get your hopes up.”
Reluctantly, he took the Pokéball from his coat and threw it into the water.
People sang praises of Lapras’ mild temperament and human-level intelligence, thinking that the former meant that it was universally friendly and forgetting that the latter rendered it capable of anger and grudges beyond that of the average Pokémon. Ice, certainly, was more intimidated by his partner’s glare than he would be by any human.
“...Hey. I...guess you heard about our problem?”
Lapras, floating on the shallow waves, looked back at him cold and unperturbed. He was going to need to do better than that.
“Ah...yeah. I know I screwed up, I know I shouldn’t have left you out. We’re partners: we always have been, and...we always should be. So I promise that I won’t let things get so out of hand again, and that I’ll include you in everything from now on like I should.”
Ice waded the distance between them. Lapras’ glare didn’t soften, but she allowed him to lay his hand on her nose just like always. The thick hide was cold and clammy, but familiar enough to be comforting instead of unsettling.
Always, it brought back the blurry hours of his childhood, splashing through the gray shallows of the lake, trying to catch up with her enough to grab a flipper. Back before he had realized how small and powerless he really was. Before he had hardened and become Ice.
“You’ve got to know I’m not so bad a guy that I’d forget you, right?”
Lapras eyed him harshly for another painfully long moment. The next moment, though, water was splashing up his stomach and there was a hard, damp head nuzzling his chest and face. Ice couldn’t remember the last time he had smiled, but he sure was smiling now.
“...I missed you, too.”
~0~
Much faster than the motorboat, Ice thought, even if it was a bit of a tight squeeze.
Shooting off across the open ocean, they watched the dark mass that was Almia grow smaller and smaller. Through the smoky clouds, Ice thought he could see flashing lights, but didn’t give much thought to what they could be. His only priority was whatever waited for them on the far shore.
He felt quite sure that they would be sticking together, at least for now. His teammates were tucked between the knobs of Lapras’ shell: Heath was stroking Plusle’s ears to soothe them both, and Lavana sat with her knees tucked up to her chest. Ninetales laid with its rear to its Trainer, but was allowing Lavana to tentatively pet a tail.
As for Ice, he laid back against the back of Lapras’ long neck, stroking its side with the backs of his fingers. Soon, Team Dim Sun would be nothing more than a misstep in their past. Whatever they did next in their team of six, he was sure it would be worlds better.

Trying to figure out the gym circuit is proving extravagantly difficult. The Go-Rock Quads are our only approved gym, they’re going to co-run a steel-type gym in Linlock City, an old mill town on the west coast. I’m trying to get Chairwoman Erma to approve letting the Sinis Trio each run gyms of their own, but she’s not too happy about the decision to open Almia up to trainers in the first place, so it’s not easy-going.
I might see if Dad wants to take a grass-type gym up at Partner Farm, but I don’t think he’d want to. Isaac might also start up an electric-type gym/personal lab instead of using the Ranger Union.
But even if all that works, we still need three more gym leaders, and there aren’t a lot of people here who even know how Pokémon gyms work, much less have the ability to run a gym. I do at least have ideas for where the others can go when we find the people.
So this ends up leading to this as our prospective gym circuit:
Ice running an ice-type gym in Hia Valley (there’s an arena in the castle already, so we might just use that)
Lavana running a fire-type gym out of the secret harbor in Boyleland
Heath running a ground-type gym somewhere in the Haruba Desert
The Go-Rock Quads running a steel-type gym out of Linlock Town
Isaac running an Electric-Type gym… somewhere. Probably in Pueltown, so he’s close to his family
Someone running a ghost/psychic/dark-type gym in the cave system under the Chroma Ruins
Someone running a flying-type gym in Peril Cliffs
Someone running a grass-type gym in the Vien Forest
We won’t have an Elite Four until trainers start to complete the circuit, but as far as I’ve read that’s pretty standard for newly-opened regions. Tory has already volunteered to be one.

What started as a doodle at work but I loved it so much, I had to finish it! Her name is Clarity and she's the youngest daughter and child to former Sinis Trio member Ice and his beloved Rebecca! She's a Pokemon Ranger that makes her biggest splash when she travels to the Oblivia Region. Hope everyone likes her!!

Hey, check it out. We hacked into those Rangers’ blog. Wanna mess around a bit?
Eh? On our day of vacation? And where did you get those sitting chairs?
Oh, come on, it’ll be fun! Let’s answer some questions of our own--why not?
Then, it’s settled. Until we get booted from this server, we’re going to answer as many questions as we can!
...Do I get a sitting chair, too?
