It took Rhodey by surprise just how happy it made him to see Sam, to know that he was capable of still feeling like this after everything. His grief was expansive, making him swollen with it, like all the tears he hadn’t shed transformed the whole of his body into his own internal reservoir.

I'm not surprised by the pattern because I'm somewhat aware of it when I write, but it was fun to look at it directly like this instead of letting it happen almost instinctually. For the most part, I go with an observation or realization the POV character has that sums up or sparks the core of the fic (and that reveals a lot about who they are or what their mindset is like). Sometimes that truth (their truth) is shattered, and sometimes it's reaffirmed. Very rarely does the thought come in the form of dialogue, though if it does, the dialogue acts the same way and serves as an impetus.

"Puppet Master" is the rare exception; that aberration comes down to the nature of the fic, which deals with Tony's disorientation and loss of agency over his body and mind. There was no other way to capture that fear and confusion and situate the reader in that instability except to start in medias res.

I tend to be a visual or sensory writer, so usually I sneak some description or a metaphor or simile in early on, and no matter what, I'm all about setting the mood for the story.

First lines are really important to me! I go by feel, and they have to feel right to me by tempo and by sound, by their gravity. That doesn't necessarily mean they have to be serious (my crack-ish AvAc fic, which isn't on this list, has a goofy first line), but they have to have weight. They have to feel justified; why this line(s) and not something else? I can't start writing otherwise because the first lines so often set the tone, direction, and meaning of the entire story for me. Sometimes this is the root of my suffering because I end up rewriting and rewriting the first paragraph until I finally find my way out. :')

posting an old rhodeysam meta for @redwingsupportgroup in re to my latest ask. wrote this a few years ago but i’ve never seen anyone talk about it so here!!

listening to sam talking to steve about losing riley drew parallels for me about rhodey’s accident in civil war.

sam tells steve that he and riley were pararescue, meaning both of them had falcon suits and took on falcon’s duties during their tours. when he tells steve that someone shot riley out of the sky, he claims “there was nothing i could do about it. it’s like i was up there just to watch.” the amount of pain sam would’ve harvested due to losing riley and not being able to do anything about it is momentous. he would’ve sat on that shit for years, though about it for days on end. losing his best friend because he wasn’t able to save him? sam, a pararescue, not being able to do the one thing he was put in the field to do; rescue. it would tear him up completely.

marvel do a good job of ignoring sam’s possible ptsd from the war/losing riley other than mentioning his work in a va support group briefly in captain america: the winter soldier. other than that, correct me if i’m wrong, we don’t really see much of it. sam willingly joins the avengers because “captain america needs my help”, but the idea of his ptsd resurfacing is completely untouched. it’s not normal— sam wouldn’t have been able to go back into it so easily and lightly like he did. there would be moments off camera where his ptsd plays on him, where does missions like in tws/iw and these thoughts about his tours come back to him. he suffers. he does.

and rhodey’s accident in civil war would be one of them. that beam from vision was meant for sam, not rhodey. vision meant to hit him, not rhodey, yet rhodey took the fall because sam’s survival instinct kicked in. as rhodey falls from the sky and sam flies to try and save him, in his mind— it’s losing riley all over again. of course this close of a parallel would trigger sam’s ptsd and the reoccurring event would play on his mind. he tries so desperately to save rhodey as he falls because he couldn’t save riley when he fell. sam wasn’t prepared to lose another person he called a friend, despite the stupid feud in civil war, and it hit him hard.

ultimately when rhodey is injured, the civil war is stopped immediately, and sam even goes to check that he’s okay. if the writers remotely cared about him... they’d have let him stay with tony to see if he was okay. because it meant something to sam in that moment of panic. it meant something because it hit hard with him that yet someone else was falling from the sky and he couldn’t do anything to save him. the line “it’s like i was up there just to watch” comes into play so poignantly and perfectly once again— because ultimately? sam does watch riley fall to his death. he watches rhodey fall to paralysation. he can’t do anything about either of the situations.

and this entire situation playing out once again for sam is probably one of the most painful parallels marvel has indirectly pulled. yet sam continues to fight. he continues on to infinity war, his friendship with rhodey mends itself because it never was sam’s fault in the first place. sam and rhodey could easily have one of the best friendships in the mcu but aren’t given the screentime or the time of day by the writers. there’s unspoken quips from the writers in lines like “the hotels weren’t exactly five star”, the shared look between sam and rhodey in infinity war. they could be THAT duo, rid of toxic masculinity and full of care and love for one another. but marvel stay silent

Once upon a time, there were two fairy kingdoms with two crown fairy princes: the Shield Fairy Kingdom with crown fairy Prince Samuel and the Rhodium Fairy Kingdom with crown fairy Prince James.

Taking Your Love With Me Wherever I Go

Being with Sam felt like the sun breaking through. Rhodey knew it was only a temporary reprieve, that it wouldn't fix everything because that wasn’t how grief worked. But for now, all he wanted was for the moment to stretch to infinity, to be at the diner they had always gone to back in the old days, talking over breakfast like they always did.

This is my @marveltrumpshate fic for @betheflame. Thanks to Infinity War, I unexpectedly found myself shipping Rhodey/Sam, and thanks to flame, I was able to write a story for the ship. Flame asked for post-Endgame Rhodey/Sam which was exciting for me. I think there's a lot for Rhodey and Sam to talk about because of their shared/similar grief and uncertainty about their place in the world moving forward, and this is just the beginning of that conversation and their evolving relationship.

A tiny Sam/Rhodey rant

Angsty and like feels. Watch out!

Mmmm I’m not sure where to start so I’m just going to dive right in.

In Winter Soilder Sam alluded that he watched his wing man and best friend fall and die. There was nothing he could do. “It’s like I was just up there to watch.” Sam said to Steve after his group session at the VA. Also he stated that he had trouble finding a reason to be over seas after Riley died. Which has led me to believe that it had a profound impact on him beyond what we may have thought at the time.

Now let’s flash forward to Civil War.

Rhodey got zapped by Visions beam and fell because Sam moved. (Totally not blaming Sam BTW.) And low and behold Rhodey started to fall from hella high up. Now where does that sound familiar from? Yeah that’s right! How Riley died. Sam could have kept going but, he turned around to try and save Rhodey cause he’s a beautiful little bean, and a decent human being and that’s just what you do. Anywho. Tony was also trying to get there in time and yet they were both seconds too late. In short seeing Rhodey fall like that was all too much like how Riley fell.

I’m sure Sam thought he was going to lose Rhodey like he lost Riley. Maybe even yank up some old PTSD? Proof there dating? Yeah I think so. Marvel make them canon ASAP.

oooh! Winteriron, 72: 'They're going to love you, don't worry!'

“They’re going to love you, don’t worry!” Tony said. 

“They’re going to hate me and I’m going to lie in the floor and die.” Bucky said, not giving up his death grip on the car door. “My pie is going to taste horrible and I probably put in salt instead of sugar and I’m never going to be able to show my face in-”

“Rhodey made a bet with Sam that we’d be late.” Tony said and Bucky stopped and blinked at him. 

“He what?” Bucky said indignantly and Tony hid a grin. Rhodey and Bucky were at each other’s throats from the moment DUM-E had wandered out once again at MIT and came back with a baffled Bucky who didn’t seem too bothered by a sentient robot that acted like a puppy or the word vomit that came out of Tony’s mouth when he didn’t sleep for over two days. Their ridiculous ‘bets’ had ended up with plenty of blackmail material on both of them so Tony was more amused than anything. 

Bucky snatched up the pie and marched towards the door, muttering angrily under his breath. Tony threw a couple hundreds at the startled driver and started after his boyfriend, who realized again where he was and turned to send a panicked look at Tony. 

“You going to stand there all day?” Rhodey said, throwing open the door. 

“I’ve been here two minutes Rhodes, and I’ll have you know that-Ma’am!” Bucky squeaked the last word as Mama Rhodes hipchecked Rhodey out of the way and gave a full body hug to Bucky. He nearly dropped the pie, but it was rescued by Rhodey who vanished back into the house. 

“You must be the Bucky that has our Tony all aflutter!” Mama Rhodes said, releasing Bucky to give Tony the same hug. He melted into her arms with a happy sigh. He was taller than her, pretty much everyone was, but no one gave hugs like Mama Rhodes. 

“I’m not aflutter over anything.” Tony grumbled on principle. 

“Yes yes, you say that.” Mama Rhodes said, ushering them inside. “Come in! James set the table and the lasagna has just finished, Tony’s favorite of course.”

“You spoil me Mama Rhodes,” Tony said, pressing a kiss to her cheek. 

“Tony!” a blur cannonballed out of the nearby room and slammed into Tony. He staggered back, but gave the teenager a hug. 

“Hey Nettie.” Tony said and the girl huffed. 

“It’s Jeanette.” Jeanette informed Bucky before tilting her head at him. “Hey! You’re the boyfriend!”

“Yes, so please don’t break him.” Tony said, sliding his hand into Bucky’s and tugging him along. 

“She calls you James?” Are the first words to come out of Bucky’s mouth as he stares at Rhodey and Tony can see how he wants to facepalm when he realizes what he said. 

“Hey, only my Mama can call me that.” Rhodey said, stabbing a soup spoon in Bucky’s direction. “You don’t get first name privileges Barnes.”

“James, don’t tease him.” Mama Rhodes said, but there was a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “Tony’s got everyone calling you Rhodey, Jeanette even called him that the other day. Half the students at MIT were calling him that after two months of meeting Tony.”

“He likes to joke he’s collecting all the James’,” Bucky said, relaxing a little bit as Rhodey started to serve dinner. “And none of them actually go by James.”

“It’s true,” Tony said, glad to see that Bucky had started to relax.

“Of course, there was that incident about three weeks back...” Every single happy thought about Bucky vanished. he was going to murder his boyfriend at the dinner table. 

“Don’t you dare!”

“See, he was trying to come up with nicknames and -stop pinching me you menace!” 

(Hours later, Bucky was trading hair care product tips with Jeanette and chattering away with Mama Rhodes about the newest wrestler on TV and even managing to get a decent conversation with Rhodey. 

The pie, of course, was fantastic.)
