I Know Who You Are - Raphael Santiago x female reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Simon manages to sneak Raphael into the institute for you
Words: 2.1k
Warnings: none really
Notes: I'm falling into a shadowhunters phase oof
Y/N’s POV
As I collapse onto my bed in the Institute, the weight of the day’s revelations presses down on me like a leaden cloak, suffocating and relentless. Tears stream down my cheeks,  tracing paths of anguish as the truth echoes relentlessly in my mind, a discordant melody of disbelief and confusion.
Carstairs. Brother Zachariah. My father.
The words, once distant whispers of a past shrouded in mystery, now thunder through my consciousness with the force of a revelation. I clutch at the sheets beneath me, seeking solace in their solidarity as my world trembles on its axis.
Outside my door, Simon’s voice calls out, a lifeline in the storm of emotions, “Open the door Y/N, please let me in.”
The plea in Simon's voice tugs at my heartstrings, a poignant reminder of the bond that binds us together as parabatai. With a heavy sigh, I push myself upright, the weight of guilt settling like a lead weight in the pit of my stomach. Simon knows me better than anyone, his empathy a double-edged sword that cuts through the facade I so desperately cling to.
As Simon’s sigh resonates through the room, a pang of guilt tightens my chest. I can sense his frustration and hurt, his desire to help me, but also his understanding that sometimes, despite our bond, there are wounds too deep for even a parabatai to heal. With a heavy heart, I listen ass his footsteps retreat down the corridor, leaving me alone with my tumultuous thoughts.
Alone in the quiet of my room, I succumb to the weight of my emotions, allowing the tears to flow freely as I sink back onto the bed again. The darkness presses in around me, a suffocating shroud that threatens to consume me whole. Despite my best efforts to push them away, memories of the day's revelations dance behind my closed eyelids, taunting me with their impossible truth. The image of Brother Zachariah, his face a mask of sorrow and regret as he revealed the truth of my lineage, burns bright against the canvas of my mind.
But amidst the chaos of my thoughts, exhaustion creeps in like a thief in the night, stealing away the last vestiges of my resistance. As my eyelids grow heavy and my breathing slows, I surrender to the embrace of sleep, seeking refuge in its comforting embrace. In the quiet of my dreams, the pain and confusion of the day melt away, replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility. For a fleeting moment, I am weightless, free from the burdens that weigh me down in the waking world.
I must have fallen into a fitful sleep as I wake with a start, a cold hand caressing my hair and soft words being whispered. I sit up with a shout of surprise, my heart pounding in my chest as I register the unexpected presence of Raphael. His dark eyes, pools of shadow in the dimly lit room, search my face with a mixture of concern and understanding.
“Raphael?” I whisper, my voice barely a breath against the backdrop of the night, “Where are you doing here?”
He offers me a small, reassuring smile before scooting up the bed to sit beside me, his presence a comforting anchor in the storm of emotions, “Seems Simon has a way with blondie.” He murmurs, his voice a soothing murmur against the silence of the room, “I thought you could use the company.”
His words catch me off guard, a glimmer of gratitude flickering to life amidst the turmoil of my thoughts. Despite our differences and the tensions that often simmer between our worlds, Raphael has always had a knack for offering unexpected kindness in moments of need.
“Thank you,” I whisper, the words barely audible above the steady rhythm of my heartbeat, “I… I appreciate it.”
Raphael’s gaze softens, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken bond that binds us together in this moment of vulnerability. I turn my head to study Raphael, the subtle play of shadows dancing across his angular face in the dim light of the room. There’s a quiet strength in the set of his jaw, a sense of resolve in the depths of his dark eyes that draws me in despite my best efforts to resist.
Raphael’s physical presence is a study in contrasts, a blend of strength and vulnerability that captivates me despite my attempts to keep my emotions in check. His jeans fit him snugly, accentuating the lean lines of his frame, while his T-shirt hugs his torso in all the right places, hinting at the toned muscles beneath. With each movement, the fabric stretches and shifts, offering tantalising glimpses of the chiseled abs that lie beneath.
His jacket hangs casually on the back of the chair across the room, a stark contrast to the precision with which he carries himself. It’s a testament to his effortless confidence, a reminder that even in the face of uncertainty, Raphael remains steadfast and composed.
His pale skin seems to glow in the soft light of the room, a stark contrast to the darkness that surrounds us. There's a vitality to him, a vibrancy that belies the fact that his heart no longer beats in his chest. Despite the absence of a pulse, he exudes an aura of quiet intensity, a magnetic presence that draws me in with an irresistible pull.
His black hair is a little messier than usual, strands falling across his forehead in a disheveled cascade that only serves to enhance his rugged appeal. There's a rawness to him, a rawness that speaks to the depth of his emotions and the complexity of his character.
In this moment, bathed in the soft glow of dawn, I find myself acutely aware of the warmth of his presence beside me, the steady rhythm of his breath, despite him not needing to breathe, a comforting cadence in the stillness of the room. And as I take in the sight of him, something shifts within me, a subtle realignment of my emotions that leaves me reeling in its wake.
Gone is the ache of my shattered illusions, replaced instead by a longing, a hearing for the vampire sitting next to me with a small, enigmatic smile playing on his pale and oh so kissable lips. It’s a realisation that catches me off guard, this sudden surge of attraction that pulses through me like a wildfire, consuming everything in its path.
But amidst the chaos of my thoughts, one thing remains clear: there’s something undeniably magnetic about Raphael, something that draws me to him in a way I can’t quite explain And as I meet his gaze, a silent understanding passes between us, an unspoken acknowledgment of the tangled web of emotions that binds us together in this moment of vulnerability.
With a trembling breath, I reach out to brush a stray lock of hair from his face, the touch of my fingertips against his cold skin sends a shiver down my spine. And as our eyes meet, locked in a silent exchange of longing and desire, I know that this is the moment that can make or break this weird bond.
As I cup Raphael’s cheek in the palm of my hand, feeling the coolness of his skin beneath my fingertips, a rush of anticipation courses through me, singing with the raw intensity of our shared desire. His dark eyes seem to seeping in hue as I brush my thumb across his plump bottom lip, a silent invitation hanging heavy in the air between us.
“If you do this…” He doesn’t finish the warning, both of us knowing, sending a shiver down my spine, a potent mixture of fear and longing swirling within me. There’s a finality to his words, a recognition of the irreversible shift that this moment represents. But despite the uncertainty that tugs at the edges of my resolve, I know that I can’t ignore the pull of the connection that binds us together.
With a trembling breath, I lean forward, closing the distance between us until our lips are mere inches apart. The air crackles with tension, electric and charged with the promise of what’s to come.
And then, with a boldness that surprises even myself, I take the plunge, pressing my trembling lips to his in a tentative kiss. At first, there’s a hesitation in his response, a flicker of uncertainty that lingers in the space between us. But, as if a dam has been unleashed, Raphael meets my kiss with a hunger that sets my soul ablaze. His lips move against mine with a desperate urgency, a silent plea for more as he pulls me closer, his hands tangling in my hair with a possessiveness that leaves me breathless.
As Raphael responds to my kiss with a fervour that ignites every nerve ending in my body, I feel myself melting into his embrace, surrendering to the intoxicating pull of our desires. With a gentle yet possessive touch, he lays me down, his body fitting over mine as if we were made for each other, our limbs entwining in a seamless dance of passion and longing.
His lips continue to move against mine with a hunger that borders on desperation, a silent plea for more as he explores every inch of my mouth with a fervent intensity. The taste of him is like a drug, addictive and intoxicating, leaving me dizzy with desire as I lose myself in the heat of the moment.
I can feel the weight of his body pressing against mine, the heat of his skin searing through the fabric of our clothes. His touch is electrifying, sending shivers of pleasure coursing through me as his hands roam over my body with a reverence that leaves me breathless.
And then there's the scent of him, a heady combination of musk and spice that fills my senses, leaving me intoxicated with lust. It's a scent that I know I'll never forget, a tantalising reminder of the passion that burns between us.
In this moment, with Raphael's lips on mine and his body pressed against mine, I feel more alive than I ever have before. Every touch, every kiss, every whispered word sends waves of pleasure crashing over me, threatening to consume me whole.
And as I lose myself in the intensity of our connection, I realize that I can't seem to get enough of him. He's become my addiction, my obsession, the one thing that I crave above all else.
“I can deal with being a Carstairs if you stay with me.” I gasp, pulling away as unlike vampires I had to breathe.
As Raphael's lips ghost over my pulse point, sending shivers of pleasure coursing through me, I feel my heart race erratically in my chest. His words wash over me like a soothing balm, a reassurance that transcends the weight of my newfound identity.
"I don't care if you're a Carstairs or not. I know who you are," he murmurs against my skin, his breath sending tingles of electricity dancing along my nerves. In that moment, with Raphael's lips pressed against my neck and his arms wrapped around me, I feel seen, understood, and accepted in a way I've never experienced before.
But the sudden interruption of reality crashes down upon us like a wave, breaking the spell of intimacy that had enveloped us. I pull away from Raphael’s embrace, gasping for breath as the need for air overwhelms me. His dark eyes meet mine, filled with a mixture of concern and understanding,
“We should probably get some sleep," he suggests softly, his voice a soothing melody in the silence of the room. "It sounds like Simon and Alec want to tear my throat out currently for touching you.”
A small smile tugs at the corners of my lips at his words, a silent acknowledgment of the complications that come with our newfound connection. With a nod of agreement, I settle back against the pillows, feeling Raphael's warmth beside me like a comforting embrace. As sleep begins to claim me once more, I find solace in the knowledge that despite the challenges that lie ahead, I have Raphael by my side, a constant source of strength and support in a world that often feels uncertain and unforgiving
And as I drift into the realm of dreams, I know that tomorrow will bring new challenges and obstacles to overcome. But for now, in the quiet of the night, I allow myself to simply be, to exist in this moment of connection and possibility, where the boundaries between friend and something more blur and fade into the ether. With Raphael by my side, I know that whatever lies ahead, we'll face it together, bound by an unbreakable bond forged in the fires of adversity.

All Aboard!!
Tumblr media
Welcome aboard the hot mess express. I will be your conductor for the foreseeable future, although I am wildly unqualified. Just some information on your conductor, my name is J, and I am 22 years old. I am an Aries, and my pronouns are she/her/hers.
I am a democratic feminist who is spiritual but not religious. I am also a cancer survivor. I have anxiety, depression, and OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder) so although I am always available to talk, please do not trauma dump on me. I am also a college senior who wants to go to law school, so I do not really care about my sanity and sleep.
Now, some housekeeping information before we leave the station; if you are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, transphobic, or a bigot, then get off the Hot Mess Express. I will not tolerate hate on this train. Also, if you know me outside of being the conductor of this train, no, no you do not.
This train is broken up into three train cars: SFW, NSFW, and Reblogs. The SFW car is available to everyone, and some of the topics are comfort, fluff, angst, etc. The NSFW car is for those who are above the age of 18, and some of the topics are SMUT (until I am comfortable with writing my own, I will reblogging other people's), E.D., S.H., etc. And the Reblog car is for promoting other people's work.
I believe that is all for the time being, but if I have missed anything, I will make announcements.
Now, as we are leaving the station, please feel free to walk between the cars unless you are a minor. If you turn your attention to the right, you will see the topics that I will write:
Stranger Things
MARVEL
Harry Potter and co.
The Mortal Instruments/ Shadowhunters tv show
I will not write romantically for Magnus Bane, Alec Lightwood, Jace Herondale (or any of his other last names, iykyk), Clary Fray, Isabelle Lightwood, Simon Lewis, and Raphael Santiago. I refuse to break up the Malec, Sizzy, and Clace ships; sorry, not sorry. Additionally, I love how Raphael is written as an asexual vampire (when vampires are depicted as being overtly romantic and sexy), so I am not going to change him.
Hero x Villain
Potential: Reign
Potential: Nikita
Potential: Criminal Minds
Potential: H2O
Potential: Red Band Society
Potential: The Purge franchise
Potential: Personal writings I have done for school that I love Obviously, this list is subject to change
Now, if you turn your attention to the left, you will see the topics that I will not write about (but I might reblog):
Anime
Game of Thrones
Vampire Diaries
Twilight
Riverdale (not even stepping 100 feet near that dumpster fire of a show)
Once Upon a Time
In addition, these are the topic areas that I will not write about, but I will definitely reblog:
LGBTQIA+ stories
People of Color Stories
The reason I am not personally writing about these stories is simply that I am a straight, Caucasian, cisgender woman who has obviously never lived the experiences of these communities. I do not want to promote harmful or even just annoying stereotypes about these communities. Just be aware that my stories have a reader as a white woman (I sincerely apologize if you cannot enjoy my stories because of that fact). Instead, I will be reblogging stories about those communities to highlight the amazing work of those authors.
Now, turning your attention to the right is a large forest; this is just a reminder to stay out of the forest and to call your dad if you are in a cult (My Favorite Murder podcast, iykyk).
The MASTERLIST will be here eventually, trying to organize it. Requests are temporarily closed. As previously mentioned, I am a college student. This means that it is highly doubtful that I will be able to follow a posting schedule. So that being said, I am just going to post whenever I can, and that also goes for reblogging.
Thanks to: @theoreticslut for assisting me in creating this introduction!
Now, with this all being said, enjoy the ride! With love, Your Conductor J

Caught making out - Shadowhunters
a/n: I know that Raphael is not one to show affection, but I changed that for this preference. Hope you like it!
Requested on Wattpad.
Jace
You were bored out of your mind, so you had decided to walk around the institute and annoy the living hell out of your fellow Shadowhunters. This got boring too after some time, so you had decided to walk towards the training room to see if there was anything interesting going on.
You stopped right in your tracks in the middle of the doorway as you laid eyes on Jace throwing swords. He looked really focused, so you didn't want to distract him. Leaning against the doorway, you smirked as you watched his arms bulging. He was fit, you thought to yourself. There was something about him that had caught your attention ever since you met him.
As if he felt you eyeing him, Jace turned around to face you with a smirk plastered on his face. He stalked over to where you were stood checking him out, coming to a halt right in front of you.
"Enjoying the view, huh?" he said smugly while crossing his arms over his chest.
"Hmm, you are quite a sight, indeed," you shamelessly flirted back.
Jace let out a chuckle at this, "oh, please. I know I am, darling. But I'll tell you a secret. You are the best sight of the whole institute."
You raised an eyebrow and scoffed. As if.
"No, (y/n), I am serious," Jace said, "you are so damn gorgeous and you don't even know it and- and god, you make me crazy," he added softly.
Your eyes widened at this confession, heart beating faster than usual. Did this mean he liked you? That he was in love with you?
You were so lost in thoughts you barely noticed him pressing his lips against yours. Your eyes widened in shock once again, but soon closed as you wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed your lips against him firmly.
The kiss was amazing, hands down. You were so lost in each other you hadn't noticed someone walk into the training room until they cleared their throat loudly. The two of you jumped away from each other to come face to face with Izzy.
"Finally," she said smugly. "Alec! You owe me 50 bucks, loser!" she ran off after sending you another smirk.
Raphael
The two of you were in the Hotel Dumort, hanging out in Raphael's bedroom, determined to have a bit of alone time. You were lying on his bed, his hands wrapped around your waist and your hands tangled in his hair.
You didn't see Raphael a lot, you being a Shadowhunter and him being a vampire, so being alone with him for once felt amazing.
Raphael stroked your cheek softly and brought his head down to kiss you on the lips. It started off sweet, but you both were so caught up in each other that the kiss soon started to get heated.
"We should do this more often," Raphael said between gasps. You hummed in reply and shut him up by pressing your lips against his firmly.
"Hey, Raphael, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on- oh, holy shit," you were rudely interrupted by Simon, who looked utterly shocked to see you like this.
"Oh, hi Simon," you played it off, "can you save the advice for another time, please? As you can see we were quite busy," you added sweetly.
Simon nodded his head, eyes still wide from shock and sped away quickly.
"I hope we didn't traumatize him too badly," you giggled, making Raphael chuckle.
"Since he knows we are 'busy', why don't we continue what we started?" he raised his eyebrows.
"Sounds like a plan."
Simon
The two of you were walking around town as if you were a normal couple. You loved being able to spend time with him in the daylight. Simon enjoyed every minute of it, especially when he was with you. The two of you had hit it off after you actually bumped into him while leaving the Hotel Dumort. As a Shadowhunter, you had to discuss some things with Raphael, and that is also when you got to know Simon.
From the corner of your eye, you could see that Simon had a smirk on his face and before you could even question him, he grabbed a hold of your waist and started kissing you. In the middle of the pavement.
You pulled slightly away from him after your initial moment of shock, "Simon, someone will see us!" you gasped. You hadn't told anyone about your relationship with Simon yet.
"(y/n), don't worry. Do you have any idea how big this town is? What are the chances of being caught by someone we know?" he smiled.
You let his words sink in for a little while and came to the realization that he was probably right, so you nodded your head and slammed your lips against him once more.
You were pulled away from Simon when someone bumped into you.
"Oh, excuse m- wait a second. (y/n)? Simon?" a voice behind you said. You turned around and came face to face with Jace.
Simon awkwardly scratched the back of his neck while you stood there grinning sheepishly. Jace smirked and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Who would have thought. Anyways, here's an advice. Would you please keep this for the bedroom only? It's kind of disgusting to watch, you know."
Jace left after sending you one last look, making you turn towards Simon and breaking out in a fit of giggles.
Alec
"Darling, you look fantastic," Alec said as he came up behind you, putting his arms over your waist.
"Alec, I just walked out of bed," you giggled as you were brushing your hair. The look on his face made you feel butterflies, he gave you a look so full of love you were afraid your legs would collapse.
"You have no idea how stunning you are, (y/n),  I am so lucky to have you."
"Now you are just being sappy and lovey dovey, Alec," you smiled as you wrapped your arms behind his neck, bringing him down to your level so that you could kiss him. You always had to stand on your tiptoes to reach him.
Alec deepened the kiss and let his tongue slide over your lips, asking for entrance.
"Alec! Something happened in the training room, I need you to come with me right now," Izzy walked in, jaw dropping at the sight before her.
"As much as I would love to tease you about this right now, I really need you to come with me," she said, quickly sending you a wink as she ran away.
Alec pressed one last kiss to your lips before he ran off as well. That sure was interesting.

Idk if this has been prompted/you've talked about it before but u know how maia says she misses chocolate? I'm thinking of all of her partners trying to come up with a substitute and it's a fucking mess and somehow it works out at the end but 💕 cooking shenanigans💕
i have talked about this before briefly here (link) and here (link) but i dont think i went into enough detail so L E T S G O
so like. here's a fact. raphael and maia are the only ones who can actually cook. i dont know if seelies eat but they probably don't have to since they are part demon and part angel, and neither of those have to eat. so, meliorn probably can make themself useful because they understand a lot of the natural properties of plants and besides they have magic, but other than that, they don't really know how to cook
izzy is a certified disaster which rapha already knows firsthand, clary has never touched a pan in her entire life and that's just a fact, and simon can probably like, fry an egg, but usually he only really helps his mom/bubbe cook during holidays like rosh hashanah or purim. he's way out of his depth
so because this is a surprise for maia they are down to half their amount of functional cooks and up to infinite times their amount of disasters because usually if anyone joins them when they're cooking it's simon and he mostly just chops stuff and helps. meliorn sometimes watches like an anthropologist trying to understand their funky lil food. but usually it's just rapha and maia, really
and really it was rapha's idea and he recruited meliorn because their knowledge of plants and their natural properties could be useful and somehow the whole squad is involved now. "i can't lie," meliorn says with the worst innocent expression known to man, and it's all rapha can do to throw his hands up and accept that this is his life now
anyway, they are all super excited about it (even rapha in their own way) so it's cute. rapha mostly asks for them to work as taste testers but of course they all have a billion uneducated ideas that they throw into the mix anyway. some of them are health hazards. the others are insane. eventually they get so desperate they try the insane ones anyway
also rapha just looks cute with his dumb lil apron and his several study books - a cooking book, a book about the chemical composition of chocolate, a study of werewolves' digestive system, a study on the effects of chocolate in werewolves, and an encyclopedia of non-conventional edible plants
(meliorn is offended by that last one. he doesn't need an encyclopedia when he has meliorn, an expert. simon is offended by all of them. just use the internet)
so he knows what the bad chemical that makes maia puke is, the trick is to try to get rid of it while not ruining the taste of chocolate. that's when izzy actually proves herself to be useful because wait a minute, she knows biochemistry. why did no one tell her that from the start?
so with rapha's cooking expertise, meliorn's plants expertise, izzy's biochem expertise, simon's creativity, and clary's cheering abilities, they are actually able to create a pretty dope recipe. it even melts on the tongue and everything and they can actually use it to make other stuff like cakes or other pastries or whatever
maia eats nothing else for a week. raphael spends his whole days baking chocolate stuff for her. he has no complaints, she is so happy and her smile is beautiful. and eventually they release the recipe and werewolf-friendly bakeries start popping up around the downworld and the others can now buy her chocolate, too. all is right with the world

To The Test | ao3.
That was one good thing about having a difficult teenage son. Magnus knew that Raphael would put any of his romantic partners right to the test, even if Magnus wished he wouldn't.
This is my ‘Single Parent’ square for @shadowhunterbingo.
Being a single father of two, Magnus found that it was surprisingly not the toddler that turned Magnus’ potential romantic partners away. There were of course those Magnus would go on a stray date with before finding out they didn’t like kids but Magnus didn’t want those people in his life anyway. It was the other pool of romantic partners, the ones that didn’t hate kids or the fact that Magnus had them, that Magnus had trouble with but again, it was not because of his chubby faced rambunctious toddler.
It was because of his teenager. His troubled, grumpy teenager who was exceptionally jealous whenever Magnus would start spending time with someone else but would not admit it. See, apparently some people found it odd that Magnus had adopted a fourteen year old when he’d only been twenty five himself and those few who were willing to give his unconventional family a chance ended up running away the moment that they actually met Raphael and Raphael did everything that he could to chase them away.
It was intimidating to meet your partner's kids. Magnus understood the anxiety but he especially understood it when it came to meeting Raphael because as much as Magnus loved his son, he went out of his way to make the experience as dreadful as possible.
Magnus had hardly been able to date anyone since adopting his kids. Now, Magnus wasn’t really complaining. He loved his kids and he understood that Raphael was scared of him leaving. He was scared of him getting close to anyone else and deciding that he’d rather be there instead of with their family, as if that would ever happen.
It’s why Magnus had gone so long without dating anyone. When he’d first adopted Raphael, he’d wanted to focus on his son anyway. The adoption process had not been smooth sailing for them and after they’d finally settled in a place where they felt like a real family together, Magnus had agreed to foster Max, who’d only been a few days old when he showed up on Magnus’ door step. Fostering turned into adopting and after a few years, that slow process was finally over and Magnus had his two sons and nothing else to worry about.
Except dating. Magnus hadn’t had much time for dating when Max was a baby either and now… well, now Magnus was more than a little deprived and he was finally at a point where he knew Raphael, beyond his fears and anxiety, understood that Magnus loved him even if he went out one night to go on a date.
That didn’t quite mean that Raphael was thrilled when Magnus continued to go out on dates with one man, who he then intended to introduce to his children. Going out to have fun was one thing but inviting a new person into their lives, someone that Raphael was threatened by, was completely different.
Needless to say, the first time Magnus invited Alec over for dinner, he was a little nervous about how it would go. Raphael was already not thrilled about someone coming over, someone who Magnus clearly had deemed important enough to be brought over in general. Magnus hadn’t liked someone that much in a very long time and the weight of that alone he could tell already had Raphael on edge, which didn’t set the night up to go well.
It didn’t help that Alec himself was already nervous to meet Magnus’ kids. Magnus assured Alec that Max would love him but Max loved everyone. Max loved meeting new people, regardless of who they were. The same could not be said about Magnus’ teenager but if they could get through the dinner without Raphael deciding he absolutely hated Alec, Magnus would consider it a success. They’d work on Raphael liking Alec later. Tolerating was the first step and if they could get there, Magnus could sleep easy at night knowing that Alec and his child might someday get along.
Though, Raphael had already seemed to form an opinion on Alec even before he stepped foot in their house. Raphael had asked how old Alec was and frowned when Magnus had informed him that Alec was a couple of years younger than him. Raphael asked if Alec had kids and then frowned even harder when Magnus said no.
“So, why does he want to date an older man with kids?” Raphael had snapped finally, a question that Magnus didn’t really have an answer for. Most weren’t willing to go on a date with Magnus, after they learned he had kids, especially people who were younger than him. Young people were normally looking for fun, not someone already tied down with children, especially an older child who they had to work harder to get along with than they would a baby.
“Alec likes kids,” Magnus had responded finally but Raphael didn’t seem too pleased with that answer.
“So, why doesn’t he go get his own before he tries to date someone?” Raphael had quipped back. When Magnus stammered to respond, his expression shifted into an unamused smirk, “See, he obviously doesn’t like kids that much. He likes you.”
“He likes me and he likes kids, otherwise he wouldn’t like me that much, would he?” Magnus responded.
“Unless he thinks he can just ignore us until he gets you in bed.”
Magnus held back a sigh and then, he looked up at his son mildly. “He doesn’t think he can do that. He’s coming to meet you because I like him and because you and your brother are the most important part of my life. If he thought he could ignore you, he wouldn’t have agreed to come over for dinner.”
At that, Raphael pressed his lips but didn’t say anything more. Magnus could tell he hadn’t quite convinced his son of Alec’s intentions but Magnus didn’t imagine he would no matter what he said.
“You don’t have to like him,” Magnus said at last. “-but I’d appreciate it if you tried not to be rude.”
Raphael’s gaze tightened into a small glare but he said nothing.
“I think you’ll like him, if you give him a chance,” Magnus continued.
Raphael stared at him for another moment before he rolled his eyes and rose to his feet. “We’ll see,” he murmured before he was walking down the hallway to disappear into his room. Max instantly bounded out of his own room as he saw Raphael pass, chasing Raphael to see what his brother was doing.
Magnus sighed and pulled out his phone to send Alec yet another text about how good of a kid Raphael was and how he probably wouldn’t like Alec but it wasn’t Alec’s fault. After he sent it, Magnus sighed and threw his head back.
He didn’t understand how Alec was still willing to come over.
.
Magnus thought cooking would be a bit too much for their first dinner together. There was no need to put more on the table that could go horribly wrong tonight. Magnus decided to order take out instead. That way, Magnus didn’t have to cook and Alec didn’t have to come over and cook. Magnus would already have the food on the way. Alec would come over. They’d do introductions. The food would get there. They’d all eat together and depending on how horrible the evening went, Alec would say his goodbyes and leave, so Magnus could then send him a rambled text about how sorry he was and how he knew he wasn’t exactly an easy person to be dating.
He might do some damage control with Raphael as well and hopefully reassure him that he was an irreplaceable part of Magnus’ life and that even if he was dating someone, that didn’t mean he was leaving Raphael behind.
Then, maybe someday they’d try dinner again or maybe, Magnus would just continue to see Alec outside of the house, never introducing him to his kids again and hoping that Alec never wanted them to deepen their relationship in any way that would involve Alec becoming a big enough part of his life to have to meet his children for a second time.
One option seemed far easier than the other but Magnus didn’t know many people who would be okay not being involved with Magnus’ home life at all. Alec swore up and down that he’d be patient and he understood Magnus’ son was going to have issues with his presence but Magnus didn’t think Alec really understood how strong willed Raphael could be.
Most didn’t, until they met him. Magnus wondered if it was too late to cancel the dinner all together and then, he decided that it was.
.
Magnus had reservations about the entire dinner and that was before Alec showed up late. Now, it wasn’t exactly Alec’s fault. There had been a car accident on the highway and Alec had been stuck in traffic for nearly an hour. Alec felt horrible about it, if the countless text messages he sent Magnus were anything to go by but that also didn’t mean Raphael was that understanding about the whole thing.
With the food already growing cold on the table, Raphael had settled for staring at Magnus, his unamused expression saying everything his words didn’t need to. Then, when he didn’t seem happy with simply glaring and he’d finally spoken. “He seems really dedicated,” Raphael commented mildly.
Magnus held back the eye roll. “It’s not his fault. He can’t control the traffic.”
“Or he’s just busy with something else and he lied,” Raphael snapped back instantly.
“He’s not lying. He’s in traffic and he’s doing his best to get here,” Magnus insisted.
“Max is going to starve to death before he makes it.”
At that, Magnus did roll his eyes. “Max ate dinosaur chicken nuggets not even two hours ago. I don’t think he’s quite famished yet.”
Raphael fell silent for a moment before quietly speaking, suddenly sounding deeply offended, “I didn’t get dinosaur chicken nuggets.”
“You were asleep,” Magnus explained instantly, before his son could go on about how neglectful he was as a father for not asking if he wanted food when his brother ate. “Maybe, if you slept at a reasonable time and woke up in the morning with us, I could offer you dinosaur chicken nuggets with your brother.”
Raphael scoffed. “Why? If I stayed up later last night I’d still be asleep and I wouldn’t have to sit here and wait for your boyfriend to finally decide to show up.”
“He’s not my boyfriend,” Magnus murmured, pulling out his phone to see another text from Alec, informing him that he was finally turning off the highway.
“Oh, so you introduce us to every man you meet?”
Magnus shoved his phone back into his pocket and looked up to Raphael yet again. “He’s not my boyfriend until you like him,” he said before he could really think through that sentence. It was true. He wouldn’t date someone his son didn’t like but that didn’t quite mean Magnus had to inform him of that.
“Then you’ll never date someone again,” Raphael informed him.
Magnus left out a soft sigh. “We’ll see,” he said, echoing Raphael’s bleak words from before.
.
Alec finally arrived twenty minutes later. When Magnus opened the door, Alec appeared on the other side, out of breath and clearly having sprinted from his car all the way up the steps to Magnus’ loft.
“I’m sorry,” Alec rushed out instantly.
Magnus waved him off, ushering him inside instead. “It’s fine,” Magnus murmured, hoping Alec would leave his apologies at the door before Raphael could hear them and latch onto the weakness. “Come in.”
Magnus closed the door behind Alec, reaching to take his jacket as Alec shrugged it off. Alec turned to look at him as Magnus hung it up. For a moment, they stared at each other, a frantic air hovering between them in a way that had never happened before. Normally when they both met, things were easy between them. Magnus relaxed in Alec’s presence like they were meant to be together but here, Magnus met Alec’s wide eyes with an equally unnerved look of his own.
Magnus wanted this to go well. Alec wanted this to go well and yet, Magnus knew it would not and he was trying to be okay with that. Raphael was going to resist anyone Magnus brought into their lives. It had nothing to do with Alec himself and they’d already had that conversation before Alec had come.
But they both wanted it to go well anyway, even though it wouldn’t. Magnus wished he had managed to be more okay with that fact.
“Let’s go sit,” Magnus said finally.
Alec nodded and turned to follow Magnus as Magnus led him into the dinning room, where Max was happily babbling to Raphael as Raphael sat with his arms crossed. He’d been smiling a second before they walked in. Magnus could tell by the way his face changed. He’d been happily talking to Max but now, his face hardened. He sat stone faced as he watched them both walk in.
Magnus gestured to Alec. From the corner of his eye, Magnus saw Alec raise a hand to wave to them both. “This is Alec,” Magnus said, as if Raphael hadn’t heard Alec’s name a million times by now. Raphael knew who Alec was. That’s why he was glaring in his direction.
“Hi,” Alec rushed out. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Raphael-” Alec’s eyes darted over to Max, who was staring with wide eyed interest at the new stranger. “-and that must be Max.”
Magnus could hear that Alec was nervous. That wasn’t great and when Raphael heard it, his expression only tightened and became a touch angrier. He didn’t seem to appreciate Alec taking an interest in his brother. Raphael had always been protective. “Hi,” Raphael managed to ground out finally.
Magnus shot him a grateful smile. Saying hello was a good first step. “Sit, Alec-” Magnus said as he gestured to the table.
Magnus sat next to Max and Alec came to sit next to Magnus, thankfully leaving the seat next to Raphael empty. Magnus was pretty sure Raphael would have tried to stab Alec with his fork if he dared to sit next to him.
“The food looks good,” Alec said politely as Magnus reached for the dishes and started to plate some for Max and then himself.
“It was better a half an hour ago when it was warm,” Raphael murmured as he reached for the dish in Magnus’ hands.
Alec paled slightly. “I know, it probably was. I got stuck in traffic-”
Raphael cut Alec off before he could go on with his explanation. “I heard.”
Magnus reached for the plate again before he handed it to Alec. Alec seemed thankful to take it and have something to do with his hands.
“Alec’s here now,” Magnus said, smiling tightly across at his son. “That’s all that matters.”
Raphael said nothing to that and he stayed silent as Magnus and Alec started talking about Max and his drawings on the refrigerator. Max babbled happily as he reached for his noodles with his bare hands, chomping as he managed to get one into his hand. Every few minutes, Magnus or Raphael would stick their fork out and offer Max a bite of their own noodles, to make sure he was actually eating and not just playing with the food in his dish.
Raphael seemed more than happy to face away from Alec, focusing on his brother as if he failed to look over to Alec once during the meal, he would just vanish. That was better than being openly antagonistic, so Magnus would take the pointed silence without comment. If Raphael would let them have a few meals where Raphael ignored Alec, at least that was something. Maybe someday, Raphael would look at him and talk but Magnus didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself. The silence was enough for now and it remained for nearly the entire meal.
Magnus tried to engage Raphael a couple of times. He asked Raphael about an essay he was working on for school, prompting him to explain what it was about. When Raphael didn’t, Magnus explained instead.
Almost forty five minutes later, they were done eating and Max was covered in his food. Magnus thought it was good for Max to explore food by himself but that also meant that every single meal ended with his son looking like a disaster.
Magnus rose to his feet, reaching to pull his gooey child into his arms. “I’m going to go clean him up. I’ll be right back. Raphael, could you help clean up a little?”
Raphael nodded simply. He’d always been so polite about doing chores. Once when Max was merely a baby, Magnus had woken up to Raphael almost done cleaning the entire house. Raphael had brushed off Magnus’ thanks as if it was no big deal but Magnus knew it had been. Magnus loved his son. He was such a good kid. Magnus just wished other people could see that as easily as Magnus did.
Magnus left Raphael and Alec in the kitchen as he went to wash Max. He assumed that they’d pick up the dishes and sit in silence until Magnus returned but when Magnus did return twenty minutes later, he heard Alec and Raphael speaking. More specifically, he heard Raphael speaking.
Magnus paused in the hallway, holding Max a little closer as he listened. His toddler was uncharacteristically silent, as if he wanted to let Magnus listen too.
“He doesn’t date a lot of people,” Raphael was saying. “He just stays home with us and if he’s dating you, he must like you quite a lot but Magnus is stupid. He just trusts people and if you don’t actually care about him, then you leave and you don’t call him again. He doesn’t deserve to get strung along.”
There was a still moment in which no one spoke and Magnus did not dare to breathe. Then, Alec said, “Raphael, I really really care about your father. I like him a lot and I’m not going to hurt him. I’m here because I like him so much that I want you and your brother to like me too.”
“Just don’t hurt him,” Raphael repeated. “And we’re fine.”
“I won’t,” Alec promised.
Magnus stood in the hallway for a few more moments until Max started babbling. Magnus straightened up and then, he walked into the kitchen.
“Oh, look at how clean,” Magnus said, as if he hadn’t heard the conversation that had just happened. Magnus moved and pressed a kiss to Raphael’s head, something that made the teenager scrunch his face up and turn away, grimacing. Magnus kissed Raphael’s head sparingly because of that very reason but today, he couldn’t help but indulge himself. “Thank you,” he called as Raphael promptly fled the room, rolling his eyes in response.
Max squirmed as Raphael retreated. Magnus placed his toddler on the ground and he fled the room too, running after his brother as quickly as his little legs would carry him. Magnus met Alec’s eyes and smiled softly. “It went well,” he said.
Alec laughed and he sounded immensely relieved. He nodded. “Yeah. It went better than I expected. I don’t think... Raphael hated me?” He asked, looking anxious for reassurance that Raphael hadn’t informed Magnus that he absolutely despised Alec.
“No, he didn’t,” Magnus assured. Magnus thought about telling Alec that he’d heard what Raphael said but Alec didn’t tell him, so Magnus didn’t mention it. He wasn’t supposed to have heard it. It was a private moment between Alec and his son and Magnus would let them have it. Magnus liked that Alec didn’t tell him too. He liked that Alec didn’t tell him exactly what Raphael said the moment Raphael fled the room.
A lot of people would have but it took someone that respected Raphael to not say anything. Magnus needed someone that respected his children and he needed someone that was willing to put in the effort to get along with them, even when it was not easy.
That was one good thing about having Raphael. He would put Magnus’ partners to the test right away. There was no waiting for their true colors to come out. If they couldn’t handle Raphael from the beginning, then Magnus knew it wasn’t meant to be.
“Thank you, Alec.” Magnus murmured. “For coming and-” Magnus waved his hands vaguely. For trying with him. For caring so much. “For everything.”
Alec nodded. “Of course, Magnus.” Alec swayed towards him, asking hesitantly, “Could I-”
Magnus moved forward instantly, pressing his lips into Alec’s own. It was a blissful moment that Magnus was thankful to have, until Magnus heard Raphael’s voice from the doorway.
“Gross,” he snapped.
Max at his side burst into laughter, probably not understanding what his brother was referring to but finding it all very funny anyway. Max adored Raphael and anything he had to say was the funniest thing Max had ever heard.
Magnus pulled away from Alec, sighing softly.
They said their goodbyes shortly after and then, Alec left. Magnus wanted him to stay but they’d agreed on dinner alone and Magnus didn’t want to push whatever tentative agreement Raphael had made with Alec by asking him to stay. He’d come over again soon and maybe then, he could stay a little longer.
Magnus was surprised when that night Raphael asked when his boyfriend was coming back. Magnus informed Raphael that he wasn’t sure before he stopped and really thought about what Raphael had said. “I told you he wouldn’t be my boyfriend unless you liked him,” Magnus said after a long moment of silence.
Raphael did not respond but that let Magnus know what he needed to know anyway. Raphael had remembered what Magnus said and he’d said what he did on purpose.
Alec had gotten Raphael’s seal of approval, at least for now. One slight slip up and Magnus knew that Alec would lose it but Magnus didn’t think Alec would slip up. If he did, Magnus was sure his teenager was going to have a lot to say about it but for now, Raphael liked him.
That was so much more than Magnus had hoped for.

5 Things to Put in a Pentagram to Summon Raphael Santiago
(Read on AO3) Square Filled: Pentagram for @shadowhunterbingo Pairing: Saphael (Simon Lewis/Raphael Santiago) Rating: Teen and Up  – Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Tags: fluff, fluff and humor  Summary:  Simon, desperate for any hint of what Raphael likes in an attempt to flirt with him, resorts to memes in a subtle attempt to trick the answers out of him.  -------------
Simon sends another one of those ‘about you’ sorts of memes to Raphael - this one is meant to be a list of choose ‘this’ or ‘that’ options, except Raphael doesn’t answer any of them and instead sends a wall of text back about why anyone would choose either of those options, or that he hasn’t even heard of the actors or shows listed, and-
Simon sighs, dropping his phone onto his chest as he sits on Clary’s sofa.
“Trouble in paradise?” Clary asks, raising an eyebrow.
“It isn’t working,” Simon says with another dramatic sigh. “I keep sending him those question memes to try and find out something he likes that I can use, but he just keeps criticizing them instead of giving me anything to work with.”
“You could just ask him,” Clary points out.
Simon balks at the idea. “Oh, yeah, sure, because it’s so simple. Let me just go up to the leader of the vampire clan and ask him what his favorite flowers are so I can get them for him.”
“It’s clearly better than sending him memes that ask if he prefers roses or carnations,” Clary points out.
“Because the answer is neither, they’re both so cliche,” Simon offers. “At least I’m getting a great idea of what he doesn’t like. Soon I’ll be able to narrow it down, right?”
Simon flips through his social media, his eyes catching on another meme - but this one is perfect. It’s practically fate that he finds it now of all times.
“Clary, I got it!” he yells victoriously, jumping off of the sofa to walk over and shove his phone in her face.
“The pentagram meme?” Clary asks dubiously. “Why is this your sudden revelation when all the others failed?”
“Because,” Simon says. “5 Things to Put in a Pentagram to Summon Me. It’s flawless. He’ll tell me five of his favorite things, or at least five things he at least vaguely likes, and I can use that!”
Simon hits send and waits. He knows Raphael is meeting with Magnus so he’s probably too busy to keep checking his phone, but whenever he does get it--
Simon’s phone dings and he opens the message from Raphael immediately.
His face falls.
Raphael- ...why would you need 5 things, you know all it takes is grave dirt to summon a vampire, right? You don’t even need a pentagram.
Simon sighs. “Fine, you were right. I give up.”
-------------
Raphael’s phone buzzes in his pocket and he doesn’t have to check to know that it’s Simon. Again.
“Are you going to see who it is?” Magnus asks. “It could be important.”
“Or it could be Simon with another ridiculous question game,” Raphael counters. He does check his phone because he’s the leader of the Brooklyn Vampire Clan and the one time he decides to ignore his phone would be the time the Dumort ends up on fire or something, but he only proves himself right when he sees Simon’s name and opens the message to find something about a pentagram.
“This is the fourth one this week,” Raphael mutters as he types out the obvious answer to what would be needed to summon him anywhere, which Simon definitely already knows.
“What are they, exactly?” Magnus asks. There’s something about the too-curious, lead-in tone of voice he has that makes Raphael immediately doubt the innocence of the question.
“They’re questions… ridiculous ‘would you choose this or that’ questions, or pointless lists of favorites, or this… honestly, I don’t even know what this last thing one is.”
Magnus hums to himself, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips.
“What?” Raphael demands. He doesn’t like that look at all.
“Can I see them?” Magnus asks, holding his hand out expectantly. Raphael can’t imagine how it would hurt so he hands his phone over, and watches as the smirk on Magnus’ face only spreads the more he scrolls down. “Oh, that poor boy,” Magnus mutters to himself while laughing. “Raphael, I don’t know how to break it to you… but I believe our dear Simon has a crush on you.”
Raphael nearly chokes on the air he doesn’t need to breathe, an instinctive reaction of shock. “I beg your pardon?”
“He’s trying to find out things you like,” Magnus points out, like it should be the most obvious conclusion to draw. “This last one? ‘5 Things to Put in a Pentagram to Summon Me?”
“A ridiculous question, you know that-”
“Yes, yes. But this isn’t meant to be realistic, it’s a silly mundane meme. You were supposed to tell him your five favorite things. And I’ll bet you any money if you did, he’d find a way to get them for you.”
“Why wouldn’t he just say he likes me? Or ask me what I like?” Raphael says, grabbing his phone back and scrolling through the messages from Simon again. With that new idea in mind, he can see what Magnus is implying even if he doesn’t quite believe it or understand it.
“I mean… you are a little intimidating.”
“I am not,” Raphael says, but knows the words are a lie before he finishes them. Perhaps he is a little intimidating, but it comes with the territory. But also, perhaps he’s been a little extra dismissive of Simon lately, in no small part because he hasn’t known what to do with how close Simon keeps trying to get to him. At least now he knows why.
“I should call him and ask if he’s trying to flirt with me,” Raphael decides. The moment he goes to pull up Simon’s number his phone is snatched from his hands.
“Absolutely not, you’ll scare him off forever. He’ll never admit it like that,” Magnus explains with a shake of his head.
“Then what do you propose I do?” Raphael sighs. He’s entirely out of his element here.
“Well,” Magnus starts slowly. “If you’re not entirely opposed to the idea…” he lets the sentence fall off in a question and Raphael groans at the realization that Magnus is going to make him say it out loud.
“I’m not. He’s… endearing. In his own way.”
“I thought so,” Magnus beams. “In which case, you answer his pentagram question. Give him five things to woo you with.”
“Okay. I can do that.” Raphael takes his phone back and considers his answer thoroughly before typing.
Raphael: But if we’re ignoring the laws of vampire summoning, then I suppose my pentagram would be made of my car, a very strong bloody mary, a well-tailored suit, Charlie Chaplin movies, and the smell of my mother’s cooking.
He isn’t sure what Simon is going to do with that information, but at least now he can get on with the actual business he came here to discuss with Magnus.
-------------
It takes Simon a few days to get everything he needs. His timing, however, couldn’t be better. Raphael’s been very tense the last few days, with a new fledgling testing his patience even more than Simon had when he first arrived, tensions with the werewolves again, and that was all on top of his usual grumpiness.
The poor guy needed some time away, or at least a break from the constant pressure he keeps putting himself under. So while he’s out one night Simon gets everything ready for his return in the morning - he got his hands on an entire collection of Charlie Chaplin movies, a batch of bloody marys Maia promises are strong enough to knock even Raphael off his feet, and even though he’s set up a relaxing atmosphere with the piles of blankets and pillows carefully arranged in a pile on the floor in front of the projector, instead of wearing the pajama pants Simon so desperately craves he’s dressed in a very well-tailored suit. In fact, it’s the suit Raphael let him borrow for Alec’s wedding that he may or may not have very intentionally forgotten to give back. And, to top it all off, in the corner burns a candle Simon found called ‘Homesick’ meant to smell of Mexican spices and cooking.
He couldn’t work in the car, because how is he supposed to work an entire car into this definitely-not-a-date, but he hopes that four out of five is good enough.
Simon paces relentlessly, going over what he wants to say in his head a few times. He has a few lines he’s been practicing, about Raphael deserving to be taken care of and to be happy. That’s usually as far as he gets before it dissolves into increasingly panicked rambling about how he’d totally understand if he isn’t the one Raphael wants for those things, and even in his head it usually ends with Simon fleeing before he can embarrass himself too much, which doesn’t really bode well for how things will actually go when Raphael shows up.
All he can do now is wait.
-------------
Raphael is in a worse mood than usual when he gets back to the Dumort with mere minutes to spare before sunrise. He’s exhausted and frustrated, and beyond any limit on his patience after the full night of ‘territory debate’ he engaged in with the local werewolves after thinking they were beyond all of that these days.
“Why does the hotel smell like food?”
It’s the first thing that hits him the moment he steps inside. It’s faint from the first-floor entryway but present to his heightened sense of smell.
“No one knows. It’s coming from Simon’s room but he won’t let anyone in here. Just told me to tell you to go up there when you’re back, so I guess you’re going to be the lucky one to find out,” Lily says with a curious look on her face.
Raphael sighs. He isn’t in the mood for whatever miniature disaster Simon’s got going on right now, but he does at least go up to tell Simon as much before he plans on retreating to his room to decompress for the remainder of the day.
Raphael gives a single courtesy knock before turning the handle and opening the door.
“Simon, I don’t have time for whatever-” Raphael starts, but the words fall silent abruptly at the sight before him. He catches Simon pacing and muttering to himself in front of a pile of pillows and blankets in front of a projector with a stack of DVDs next to it with Charlie Chaplin at the top and a pitcher of bloody mary. The smell from before is much stronger now, and also a lot clearer - jalapeno, butter, cream, caraway, a hint of smoke… It smells like home. Not Brooklyn, but Mexico, where he was born. He can practically see his mother standing in front of him cooking just from the scent of it as he closes his eyes and breathes it in fully.
By the time Raphael’s taken in the little details of everything Simon clearly took the time and effort to gather and set up for him, Simon is already fumbling out an apology over Raphael’s initial outburst of annoyance.
“Sorry. I should’ve asked if you were busy first. I just… shit, just pretend none of this exists, and-”
“Is this for me?” Raphael cuts him off. He knows it is - it’s almost everything he listed out on his text to Simon the other day - but even as he looks at it he doesn’t quite believe it.
“Yeah,” Simon says, the smallest hint of a hopeful smile making its way back onto his face. “You’ve just been so stressed lately, and I thought… I thought I could do something nice for you.”
“You’re wearing a suit,” Raphael observes. “You know, I never did get to see that on you when you borrowed it before. It looks good on you.”
Simon practically beams at the compliment. It’s a short-lived expression that’s replaced immediately with panic at Raphael’s next question.
“Is this a date?”
Simon sputters. “I... I mean, it doesn’t have to be. We can just… hang out. Or I can leave. And you can just relax on your own. In fact, yeah, you do that and I’ll just go now,” Simon says, the jumbled words coming out very quickly.
Magnus was right. Simon was trying to flirt with him. How did he not see it before?
“Simon, wait,” Raphael says quickly, before Simon can get to the door. “I’d like it if you stayed.”
“You would?” Simon asks, obviously surprised.
“I would,” Raphael confirms. “And I wouldn’t mind if it were a date. If you wanted it to be.”
Simon gapes. “Oh. Oh! Okay. Then… yes. This is definitely a date. I would like for this to be a date.”
Raphael laughs. “This might be the nicest thing anyone’s done for me in a very long time, you know,” he admits.
“You deserve it,” Simon tells him simply. “Do you like it? And be honest. I can take it.”
Raphael refrains from telling Simon that if he said he didn’t like it he’s pretty sure Simon might actually burst into tears, though it doesn’t matter because he does like it, much more than he imagined he would. In fact...
“I love it,” Raphael promises. “The suit part was more for me, though. You don’t have to keep that on if you don’t want to.”
“Oh thank goodness,” Simon sighs. “Because it’s nice and all but I cannot imagine sitting through all those movies in this. Be right back.”
When Simon returns in jeans and a band t-shirt they play some of the movies while sharing the pitcher of bloody mary, with Raphael explaining that they’re his favorites because his mother would play them all the time while he was younger. She always loved how universal they were, being silent movies and given that she spoke very little English when they first arrived in the States and that they reminded him of her as much as the smell of her cooking did. Simon tells him all about the ‘homesick’ candle he found called ‘Mexico’ so Raphael can order more for when he’s feeling particularly nostalgic. They laugh at the silly, mindless comedy and by the middle of the day Raphael can barely remember why he was in such a foul mood earlier.
“Thanks, Simon. I really enjoyed this,” Raphael says when the movies are over, the drinks are gone, and they both need to get some sleep.
“Does that mean you’d want to do it again sometime, maybe?” Simon asks hopefully.
“Only if you promise to actually ask me on a date instead of sending me internet quizzes,” Raphael counters.
“Hey, it worked, didn’t it?” Simon argues. “But fine. Will you go on another date with me?”
“Yes,” Raphael agrees. “But I’m planning the next one.”
“Deal,” Simon agrees. He hesitates by the doorway for a moment and Raphael can practically see him overthinking whatever gives him pause. Then Simon moves back into the room to put a hand on either side of Raphael’s shoulders, placing a quick kiss onto his cheek before he turns again and leaves.
Raphael refuses to admit how charming that kiss is. He does, however, grab his phone and send Simon the ‘5 Things to Put in a Pentagram to Summon Me’ meme. He has a second date to plan, after all.
It doesn’t take long for his phone to buzz with a text back from Simon and Raphael’s never been more grateful to be alone so that no one can see the entirely-too-fond look that crosses his face at the reply.
Simon: You, You, You, You, and You.
