“I have always walked in the dark,” Elrond says at last.
“Of course,” Fingon says, his Quenya very old, his eyes very deep. “Where else do people have need of the stars?”

First Meetings~
At last, Lord Elrond let go and stepped away. He repeated his original question: “Are you lost?”  Miserably, Beetle shook her head, tucking her hands behind her back. She wasn’t. She still remembered the way back to their rooms. “I was looking for water, my lord. I’m sure I can find it. I thought maybe-- the fountain--”  “To drink?” She nodded, still staring at her feet. “For my friend.”  He put a hand on her shoulder and turned back toward the main path. “Come, then. We’ll find Lindir. It’s still a little while before they’ll serve the next meal. We expected your company to sleep a long time.”
-- And the Stars Shine the Same, Chapter 1 - Beetle
I am once again drawing this scene. I did it again because first of all I love them and second of all I wanted to do a proper illustration for it, rather than just a doodle here and there. So here it is, with flower symbolism because I can't help myself.
Beetle's Side
Baby's Breath - innocence, purity of heart
Starflower - courage
Cinquefoil - beloved daughter
Elrond's Side
Queen Anne's Lace - safe haven
Anthurium - hospitality
Middle
Daffodil - rebirth, new beginnings
I'll probably do more of these but for now, here's chapter one :)

I've been working on another story for The Wives Don't Die au, and thanks to @nighttimepatrons it's spawned it's own au where
Arwen and Maeglin decide that the best way to do research for their high school middle earth history class presentation is to tour the country, so they run away together and hitchhike around and get all kinds of first hand account from the little people that nobody cares to talk to when making history books.
Elrond and Eöl team up for a bit to find their kids until Elrond realizes Eöl is a piece of hot garbage, then he's racing to find the kids before Eöl does.

"So what are you writing about currently?"
Well I'm trying my hand at high(ish) fantasy - yes, elves and shit! Epic quest, swords and sorcery but a little more modern magi-techy. But, well, really I'm writing about characters I originally created for d&d games that either ended prematurely or I felt have more potential than I can really explore in that medium. Self-indulgent passion project. But, well, I guess I'm trying to do the Star Wars prequel trilogy better, what if the temptation of Christ had worked, what is it to be a chosen one and have your personhood stolen, but really the character I'm exploring that through originally came from a place of using gods and powers beyond comprehension to explore the loss of personhood in a toxic relationship and how a person can reclaim that. But, well, it's me, so really it's all about complex interlinking yet contradictory Irish identities (even though there is no Ireland in this setting, I'm working that kink out), both the political elements of that and the personal, generational trauma aspects. But really it's about my own family's generational trauma, it's about squaring a loving marriage with an abusive one, it's about forgiving, it's about grief, grief, grief, it's about watching my grandmother die as I fall down this new rabbit hole, it's about the last conversation with my nan being about why I'm not my cousin, it's about knowing someone loves you but also that you're just the walking embodiment of their failings, it's about loving someone I barely knew and working to love people I knew too well, it's about family, family, family. But really it's about necromancy.
"Elves and shit."
"Nice!"

okay i finished watching nocturnal animals (2016) like an hour ago and. jesus-
it was one of rob's first roles (with an otherwise pretty great cast, too) so i don't think he was even in a position to choose which roles he did and didn't want to do yet.
after i finished the the film, i texted a friend "phew, i think i need a break from his emotionally heavy charactes" because he played this horrible person so so well. and he plays all the bad/dark/heavy guys so well. i've watched the empty man and galveston and antebellum and the exit plan and behind her eyes and each time he was incredibly convincing.
and then i saw a saved tiktok of rob - being his usual sweet nd shy self - and it struck me (once again) how talented he truly is and how most of you are sleeping on him.

LEGENDS OF THE QUENDI
Private commission, from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Pen and ink, watercolor, 24 K gold.
Gandalf/Olorin, Cirdan, Celembribor, Gil Galad, Melian, Galadriel, Elrond, Arwen, The Elven Rings, The Elessar, and a symbolic Belt of Melian.
No, I'm not playing hooky on Good Omens, I get about 20 minutes a day to work on other stuff.
I was getting a half hour a day, but even that's too much at this point.
And yes, at roughly 25 minutes a day, a piece like this takes a really long time. Months.
I'm a big believer in making sure you pick at something else even while working on a big project, even if you only use that time for warm ups. Keeps you from crumbling under the weight of the main project.

I was watching LOTR with friends the other day and someone pointed out that a major reason film!Elrond is upset about Arwen being in love with Aragorn is because of Elrond's own broken relationship with Isildur.
In the films Isildur and Elrond are kind of set up as....a broken failed parallel to Aragorn and Arwen?
Arwen reassures Aragorn that "he is Isildur's heir, not Isildur himself," and "is not bound to his fate"-- but Elrond disagrees, confident that Aragorn will be just like Isildur.
Film!Elrond is so certain that trusting in mankind is a mistake that will only lead Arwen to misery because he once trusted in mankind, and the man he trusted ended up failing him. His ally from the line of Elendil ended up falling to the power of the Ring and dying; he believes Aragorn may do the same thing. He doesn't just want to save Arwen's life and keep his daughter by his side; he wants to prevent Arwen from experiencing the same betrayal/heartbreak he experienced. Film!Elrond is very stoic and unsentimental, but there are all these hints at Elrond and Isildur's past relationship throughout the series. Everyone likes to make the joke "why didn't Elrond just toss Isildur into the fire?" but to me the answer is, partially, because he cared about Isildur. They were allies who fought side-by-side. After describing what happened in Mount Doom all those years ago, Elrond tells Gandalf that "It should've ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure." And I think it's interesting that he goes into passive voice for a moment, instead of saying that Isildur specifically allowed to evil to endure--because he's also blaming himself for allowing evil to endure, blaming his own failure to be harsh with Isildur and take the Ring from him by force. He's regretting that he was merciful and didn't "just toss Isildur into the fire."
youtube
His complicated emotions about Isildur also appear again in the Two Towers. After insisting that Arwen needs to give up Aragorn as a lost cause and travel into the West, Elrond has a conversation with Galadriel where she guilt-trips him for abandoning Middle Earth/mankind. When she asks him "do we let them stand alone?" Elrond walks into the study, and spends a long moment looking at his mural of Isildur.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He then, in the film's canon, agrees to send military support to one of Isildur's descendants."I don't care about Isildur anymore, men are weak," Elrond says, standing in front of his elaborate mural of Isildur and his shrine dedicated to Isildur's sword.
And yes this is all, again, a drastic departure from his characterization in the book-- most of the Aragorn-Arwen-Elrond stuff in the films is a drastic departure from the book. The films radically alter their dynamics, including eliminating stuff like Elrond being Aragorn's adopted father and all the "their bloodlines are related" stuff and etc etc etc etc etc. But honestly, now that I see it, this interpretation makes the film!Elrond-Arwen dynamic engaging in a way I hadn't recognized before? In some ways it puts Isildur into the role that Elrond's mortal brother Elros played for him in the books, because Elros is cut from the films entirely. Isildur is the reason film!Elrond knows what it's like to have some kind of close relationship with a mortal and then watch them die. When Elrond angrily speaks about the folly of trusting men, or insists to Arwen that Aragorn "is not coming back" so she should just get over him, he's speaking from experience--he's projecting his own weird failed broken betrayal-ridden Thing with Isildur onto Arwen and Aragorn. And in this context, his hopeless monologue about how Arwen will regret staying by Aragorn's side also feels like it's partially from his own experience. "If Sauron is defeated, and Aragorn is made king, and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality." When he fought three thousand years ago Sauron was defeated, and Isildur did become King, and yet... TL;DR : Film!Elrond had a nasty kind-of breakup with a mortal man 3000 years ago and instead of dealing with it he decided "Men Are trash Weak" and began projecting all of his drama onto Arwen

Social Media headcanons
Aragorn
Has an official Instagram and Facebook accounts as a head of state. He also has a private account that his friends follow him on: strideranger alternatively strangerranger or rangerdanger on tiktok. His insta consists solely of pictures of his horse, Arwen and occasionally videos of cool plants or wildlife. He captions thing like an old man. His Tiktok is tracking tutorials and again nature videos. He hates twitter and isn’t on it.
Legolas
All the social medias his names include princeofmirkwood, andmybow, and legolocks. Has over a million followers in insta, tiktok and twitter. He posts lots of glammy photos of himself in the woods and tutorials of how to keep your hair and makeup intact in the battlefield. He also edits slow mows of himself shooting orcs. Doesn’t have Facebook because he claims its “for old people” despite being the second oldest member of the fellowship Posts his random thoughts in twitter and gets like thousands of retweets every time
Gimli
anmyaxe, lordofglitteringcaves, gimlet, are some of his names. Posts angry rants on twitter and faceboo. Regularly gets into internet fights with trolls. Posts videos on tiktok of his various stone projects and his workout routine (the latter gets a lot of views) Everyone loses it when he and Legolas team up for a “elf braid vs dwarf braid” youtube video. Oh yes he also has a very popular youtube channel where he explains how to of various craft trades.
Pippin
Has made foolofatook his name for everything and also a hashtag. Huge on twitter and twitch, he also has insta and tiktok and a youtube channel with Merry. Said Youtube is very popular and involves pranks, media reviews, and him and Merry doing stupid shit
Merry
Does a lot of work on the channel with Pippin. Also has a twitch and twitter. Insta king people think he’s really cool. He is the kind of person who shares his progress on candy crush and duolingo. Tried to make merrychristmas his username but it was taken and so went with theweedprofessor. His tiktok is more popular than Pippin’s but Pippin’s twitter is more popular
Sam
Not huge on social media mostly got it because his friends peer pressured him into it. Has facebook and always says happy birthday to people on it but gets annoyed by all the politics. His instagram is samnotsowise alternatively gardeningamgee. Its super wholesome, lots of pictures of his plants and pets and him and Frodo. Sometimes he’ll post a poem
Frodo
Frodo would be on tumblr tho. Username is bagginit on insta and frodoninefingers on twitter which he never uses. His tumblr is ringringhello. He also has insta but rarely posts anything except occasionally a picture of Sam. He has a linguistics Youtube channel where he talks about elvish history and language. Actually the most political on social media this is because Frodo has a very strong moral compass and wants to get the word out about important issues.
Boromir
He’s a twitch streamer I’m sorry. He also has twitter at hornofgondor. Likes everyone of Merry and Pippin’s videos and posts and reposts them with captions like “love these guys!!!” Mostly shares memes on twitter and facebook very much dad vibes
Gandalf
Posts weird shit that no one understands on facebook and instagram at thegreywizard
Bilbo

Eowyn
She has a podcast and everyone has been a guest at some point. She highlights inequalities in middle earth. Lots of reposts of feminist events and programs. Badass pics of her with her sword on her insta and tiktok. She does lots of tiktok challenges. Her username is iamnoman on tiktok and eowinner on instagram
Arwen
Like legolas is all over insta posts lots of glammy photos in the woods as well. But she also shares a lot of Eowyn’s posts. Posts lots of inspirational quotes and stuff. Is really into yoga and posts about that as well. Her name on all social medias is evenstarwen

You know that thing Elrond says about how "though all the mighty Elf-friends of old, Hador, and Hurin, and Turin, and Beren himself were assembled together, [Frodo's] seat should be among them"?
If LotR teaches us anything is that hobbits are irresistible to heroic Big Folk, so I'm sure if they ever met, all four of the mighty Elf-friends of old would be tripping over each other to be Frodo's new best friend
But like. Can you imagine Turin's reaction to a helpless-looking creature saying "Yeah I had to leave behind every home I have ever known after my family pissed off the Enemy. But I found the darkness that followed me to be such a burden that I began to lose my very self in despair and now there is no healing to be found on Middle-earth for me"? Turin might just kill Sauron at the Dagor Dagorath out of sheer pity-and-justice-and-Projection™️

I just realize something that made my blood boil.
You know how a lot of people in the fandom hate how Maglor had mercy on Elrond and Elrond and raised them as his own?
And how they try to twist and pervert that relationship into something abusive, selfish, and/or manipulative?
What if it was Maedhros?
And why do I feel like if it was him, everyone would be at his defense and write fan fictions, draw fanart, and love this family dynamic more than when it was Maglor?
Why does Maglor seem to have the most issues in the Silmarillion fandom, more than Maedhros?
Why do many people try to make Maglor into an even worse person than Maedhros despite what- albeit little- canon lore said about him?
Lastly, why did Tolkien make so many changes and switch so many things about those two in order make their characters consistent? Not to mention actually giving them character arcs…
You know, I’m staring to think that if Maedhros had found Elured and Elurín- and quite possibly raised them- the whole fandoms would’ve equally supported that dynamic.
I’m also guessing by the reason the fandom seems to like and defend Maedhros so much is because he is the ‘hot ginger’ out of the two brothers.
After all, you can project whatever you want out of a ‘blank page’, but you can’t touch the so-called ‘masterpiece’.
I’m not attacking anyone, I don’t want to attack anyone, heck maybe I’m wrong and all of Tolkien’s words are misleading from his true vision. I’m attempting to defend and respect the material that he worked so hard on, and sadly never finished.
Oh and just to be PERFECTLY clear, Maglor is not a good person, neither is Maedhros!
I just want the facts to be made clear. Maglor is a son of Feanor, a fierce killer, who committed 3 kinslayings! That is not the topic I’m discussing.
This is about the guilt, sorrow, and compassion he expressed for two orphaned boys at the end of the last kinsalying.
“For Maglor took pity upon Elrond and Elrond, and he cherished them, as little might be thought, but Maglor’s heart was sick and weary with the burden of the dreadful oath.”
- J R.R. Tolkien

Wait, what's going on with Neil Gaiman rn???
Joined Amazon's "if they don't like Rings of Power they're racist" campaign.
Which it's not true. Amazon massacred the lore and the worldbuilding, but since they're having CWs Batwoman (1,8 millions in the first episode last time I checked. Those are CWs Batwoman numbers) levels of rating they need to get Twitter to talk about them I guess.
Got into discourse over Lenny Henry's hobbit (the dude who said "WE are the ones telling the story now" when the critics about the show not following Tolkien's work started). Then got into Twitter fights with some fans who reminded him he had previously said "it was wrong to alienate the fans with changes in the story" (not with arguments, but directly mocking them) and then for some reason Elon Musk got involved (I don't like Elon Musk, I'm very wary about him, but how on earth is the billionaire saying "This show destroyed Tolkien's worldbuilding" but the writer is saying "you're either racist or never read Tolkien" if you critic this???)
They insist and insist and insist it's racism. It's not. It's the lack of beards in female dwarves. It's the elves not being the ethereal angelic beings they're supposed to be. It's Galadriel being a Captain Marvel with vulcan ears. It's Elrond, heir of at least 3 different elven kings, being treated as a nobody. It's Celeborn not even being in the show because fuck Galadriel's husband who cares about him hahahaha????
It's the fact that Lord of the Rings' fans are not only fans of the Middle Earth, elves, dwarves and hobbits. We're fans of the man behind it. JRR Tolkien and his wonderful life and his love for trees and his wife and his children and languages and who told nazis to fuck off and then reminded England they wouldn't be better than them if they kept attacking the surviving germans after the war was over. We are fans of TOLKIEN.
And Amazon has said again and again Tolkien was just not important enough to respect his vision on his own creation. Gaslighting about how much "he'd love it". The same dude who rejected a movie project because a tower had an extra stair he hadn't put in his book.
And that's what happening with Neil and honestly???? NEVER follow your favorite writers in Twitter.
