I am so bored with the trope of the poor character constantly trying to emulate a rich character, negatively comparing themselves to the rich character, wishing they could be more like them.

Like, where's my poor girl who doesn't care how her secondhand cardigan measures up against the rich girl's Balenciaga sweater? Where's my poor girl who doesn't gush on and on about how graceful the rich girl is while disparaging herself for how she occupies the same space?

Why does the poor girl always have to hate herself and be embarrassed about her background? Why does she have to idolize her wealthy counterpart?

Why can't authors imagine someone coming from poverty who doesn't feel the need to put on the mask of class privilege? Who doesn't wish they could perfectly imitate and perform an extremely limited view of sophistication? Who doesn't automatically see those with more privilege as being automatically better than themselves?

I'm just so freaking bored with this stock Poor Kid Character. I know there are people born in poverty who desperately wish to be accepted by a higher socioeconomic class, but there are plenty of us poor people who don't care about their acceptance of us. And I wish more authors knew that.

Nico referring to his mom as "Mama" implies he most likely at least used to refer to Hades as "Papa" and i 100% headcanon he still does but mostly in the manner of him having the entire Underworld wrapped around his finger for being the baby of the family

supernatural movie reboot but its a ghostfacers mockumentary about their attempt to make a “serious film” about sam and dean winchester. opens on ed and harry going “CUT!” and the camera pans to a guy that looks kind of like jared padalecki pulling off a party city wig. turns out the finale was actually part of the ghostfacer’s retelling of supernatural. Sam Dean and Castiel spend the entire movie chasing after ed and harry trying to stop the thing being made. (its a huge commercial success and they screen it at the destiel wedding)

Broke: Acknowledging that a character who is an objectively terrible person is also a complex and intentionally well thought out individual with different levels of nuance you can empathize with in some ways while not in others is immediately “woobifying” or “poor little meow meowifying” them.

Woke: “This character is a bad person” and “this character is still a person” are two statements that can, should and do coexist and admitting that they exhibit nuance and depth and are more than just their bad actions doesn’t immediately excuse or condone their bad actions or mean that you’re ignoring or trying to soften the canonical version of the character.

Bespoke: That’s the whole point, that’s always been the point, to be made to empathize with horrible people so you can understand that they can be anyone, that bad people can be likeable, can be interesting, can be human, are human, and it’s scary to think about all the ways they’re just like you and all the ways they’re just like everything you hate, forcing the use of critical skills in media analysis, forcing a confrontation of the duality of man.
