#please feel free to comment who could be the dark horse this year in either tele or jury vote because I'd LOVE to see one!
Note
hey !! i was thinking about whether this year’s esc winner is already set in stone and the likelihood that käärijä could still manage to bag the win with a majority televote score …
i was feeling kind of nervous about it all but then i thought back to 2021 - (i haven’t watched it in a while so correct me if i’m wrong,) but did måneskin get that many high scores from the jury? I don’t think they got many 12 points there at least? (maybe just enough to get a rather average jury score i can’t remember)… they had some 12’s tho i think.
… obviously måneskin absolutely dominated the televote so i was wondering if there could be a similar situation in 2023 as to 2021, as 2021 had some hugely competitive acts and it was a nail biter up to the last minute ✨ (i’m tryna remain positive to manifest this win ahahah 💆🏻‍♀️)
This is one of those asks that lighted me up with need to answer with a thousand-word essay 😄 My take on why these cases are different and why Sweden is the winner Eurovision 2023 under the cut 👇
How to win with televote
Your arguments about Måneskin winning are correct. Italy got a set of 12 points from the Slovenian (neighbour), Croatian and Georgian juries but their average jury score was only 5,42. Both Italy 2021 and Ukraine 2022 won thanks to televote despite being only fourth in the juryvote. Here’s my explanation.
In 2021 the differences between jury favorites weren’t that big. Switzerland had 267 points, France behind them 248 points, Malta 208 points and Italy 206 points. Juries tend to go for artistic ballads but televote rarely shares that sentiment, so Switzerland’s “flop” was predictable. Malta is the biggest jury favorite in Eurovision history so their lower placing in televote wasn’t a surprise either. France did well in both components, deservedly so, and over all placed second behind Italy by only 25 points.
In 2022 Ukraine landslided the televote by getting exactly 200 points more than Moldova who came in second. They got an astounding average of 11,26 points from every country’s televote, and I don’t think we’re going to see a result like that for a while if ever. I believe that Ukraine would have won last year anyway, but understandably the war had a huge effect on televoters.
Sweden vs. Finland
Juries love Sweden. Or rather, Sweden has learnt to send entries that fit to the jury taste. These are the Swedish results from the last ten years: 2012: jury 1st, tele 1st 2013: jury 3rd, tele 18th 2014: jury 2nd, tele 3rd 2015: jury 1st, tele 3rd 2016: jury 9th, tele 6th 2017: jury 3rd, tele 8th 2018: jury 2nd, tele 23rd 2019: jury 2nd, tele 6th 2021: jury 17th, tele 11th           2022: jury 2nd, tele 4th
Eight times of ten, jury has loved Sweden more than televoters. Of those eight, they have placed Sweden in their top-3 seven times. Of those seven, they have won three times.
However, the juries' attitude towards Finland is very different. Since the juries came back in 2010, Finland has failed to make it to the final thanks to juries three times (2010, 2015, 2017) when the televote would have been enough for qualification. In comparison, here are our results from the last ten years.
2012: jury 12th, tele 12th in semi (NQ) 2013: jury 18th, tele 20th 2014 jury 7th, tele 17th 2015 jury 16th (last), tele 10th in semi (NQ) 2016 jury 12th, tele 15th in semi (NQ) 2017 jury 12th, tele 10th in semi (NQ) 2018 jury 24th, tele 21st (in semi jury 15th and tele 7th, thanks to televote 10th combined and qualified) 2019 jury 16th, tele 17th (last) in semi 2021 jury 11th, tele 4th (in semi jury 6th and tele 1st) 2022 jury 22nd, tele 16th
Why Sweden is the frontrunner
Just going into the contest, Sweden is almost guaranteed jury support. By looking at the results from previous years it is safe to say Loreen is going to be the jury winner. There is a slight possibility that we get a surprise jury winner like Austria in 2018 and North Macedonia in 2019. However, that would require there to be a clear jurybait song with great vocals, most likely a powerful ballad with innovative staging, and as far as I see, there are really no contenders for that this year. Who could surprise us? Switzerland, Spain, Estonia? Maybe Ukraine because their entry this year is so much slicker and more modern?
I'd also like to point out that in 2021 the jury winner placed sixth in the televote and in 2022 fifth. That is not going to happen in 2023. Loreen is a former Eurovision winner, fan favourite, charismatic, great singer and performer, the staging shows something never before seen on Eurovision stage (assuming they’ll bring the led screens with them to Liverpool) and Tattoo is already a huge hit so it’s not going to be too artistic or boring for the casual viewers. Sweden isn't even a country anyone would vote against for political reasons. I can’t see Loreen placing outside televote top-3. She can easily get over 300 points from the juries (average of 8,34).
Can we trust the odds?
There are years when neither the betting odds or fans have no clear idea which country is going to win, but those are in the minority. We’ve had some out-of-nowhere winners like Austria 2014 and Portugal 2017, who only begun to shine during the rehearsal week, but the way I see it that 2023 is going to be like 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2022 when the odds got the winner right weeks or months before the contest. As far as I can remember, the odds have always managed to predict a Nordic winner 😄
People have been pointing out to me that the odds might be wrong and Finland still has the chance to win despite being second in the odds. I do worry that the betting odds are failing us this year, but for a different reason. My concern is that thanks to the Käärijä hype that has been going on in Finland since January has made lot of Finns bet for their own country. In 2015 the night before the first semi final Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät was sixth in the odds to win the whole contest, only to end up in last place of their semi.
It is not often that Finland believes in their own chances in Eurovision, but when we do it sometimes makes us blind for what is realistic. Not everyone making Eurovision bets is familiar with how the juries usually vote and how that might effect the overall result. Not to mention that despite Finland being second in the odds behind Sweden, their winning chance is now 40% and ours only 15%.
Personal prediction
Please keep in mind that I’m not an expert of betting odds nor Eurovision, just a fan with a love for statistics 🙃
As for Finland, just qualifying let alone a placement in top-10 is of course an amazing result for us – hell, we’ve never even qualified more than twice in a row! My wish is that we could somehow crack into top-5 for the first time ever (2006 not taken into account). There is a possibility that we could win the televote (depending on running order) but juries are going leave Käärijä outside top-10, which means our placing is around 6th/7th in the overall results. Juries rarely care about silly upbeat songs especially if they are sung in native language and based on that I see Finland going the same route as Moldova 2022 (2nd in tele, 20th in juries, 7th combined) or Norway 2019 (1st in tele, 18th in jury, 6th combined).
Sweden wins. Loreen either wins both the juries and televote or placing in second/third in one or both of them. We might have a different jury winner (Spain? Switzerland?) or televote winner (Finland? Norway? Czechia?) but it doesn’t matter because they both flop in the other component (still placing in top-10 though).
You can quote me May 14th 2023 🙂

“Are we there yet?” you ask for the thirteenth time in the span of an hour.
It’s the perfect spring day with the temperature outside not too hot and not too cold, the air feeling a little crisp when it fills your nose. The sun’s warmth is hitting your back, and you’re sure that if you could see the sky, it’d be a beautiful, clear, cerulean blue—you can’t see, though, not with the bandana over your eyes as you sit astride a horse, Joel on his own next to you holding his reins and yours to lead you.
His sigh is long and loud, and you can picture perfectly without having to look at his annoyed expression.
“No,” he growls. “The same damn answer as the last dozen or so times you asked.”
“Hey, don’t get mad at me—you haven’t spent an hour literally in the dark with no idea where the hell you’re going.”
“And I’ve told you it’s a surprise,” he rumbles.
“Well, are we close to this surprise?”
He sighs again, and you just know he’s got the fingers of his free hand pressed to his brow. “I swear, you’re just as bad as Ellie—neither of you seems to understand what a fuckin’ surprise is.” He takes a deep breath and slowly lets it out. “Now,” he says calmly, “I don’t know why you’re purposely pushin’ my buttons—”
“You ate the last of the ice cream last night,” you interrupt. “The ice cream I worked hard to make that I was excited to eat as a late-night snack.”
“You gotta be fuckin’ kiddin’ me—how many times do I have to apologize? I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were savin’ it, and had I known, I wouldn’t have eaten it. Will you please forgive me?”
“Did I annoy you enough that the thought crossed your mind to take us back home?”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t because you love me so much you’ll put up with my shit?”
“Yes.”
“Then I forgive you. Can I ask a question that has nothing to do with the distance we are from the surprise?”
He lets out a relieved breath, and his tone softens. “Of course, honey.”
Without fail, every time he calls you a sweet endearment, you melt a little, feeling so soft you might turn into a puddle.
You’re smiling. “What made you choose today to surprise me? It’s kinda random that it’s a Thursday, and you didn’t wait for the weekend when we’re usually off.” You taught at the school, and Joel did whatever he was assigned each day; lately, it’s been a lot of patrolling.
“Do you know what today’s date is?”
The question makes you think because you do know the date, and it’s not your, his, or Ellie’s birthday; it’s not a holiday that you’re aware of, either, and frankly, you’re not quite sure what the significance is.
“I do, but what’s so special about it?”
“What were you doin’ last year around this time?”
“Um, what was I doing? Wait, it’s around when I moved to Jackson.”
“That’s right, and who’d you meet a little after you arrived?”
“A lot of people.”
“Jesus Christ,” he breathes in exasperation. “Baby, when did you meet me?”
“Like two, three days after I moved into the house across the street from you.”
“And what happened when we met?”
The memory makes you smirk. “I seduced you—my sexy, way older, single dad neighbor.”
“That’s true—I was gone on you from the moment you batted those pretty eyes at me, and who were you romantically involved with from that day forward?”
Your eyebrows furrow. “You.”
“Was there anyone else?” It’s a harmless question he knows the answer to and is honestly humorous even to be asked.
You snort. “Why would I have wanted to be with anyone else when I had you? No, of course not, and you were very clear that I was yours and only yours, even if nobody else knew for quite some time.”
Your relationship with him was a secret for many months because he didn’t want Ellie to know—he was worried she wouldn’t take it well, but she ended up being completely fine with it and had figured out the two of you were a thing, pretty much from the beginning.
“So, it’s a year from the day you became mine,” he says, “why would I be takin’ you somewhere special?”
The realization slams into so hard you gasp.
“Are we celebrating the anniversary of when we first met?!”
It’s clear in his voice he’s smiling. “We are—I know we did things ass-backward, and I wish I could’ve courted you properly from the beginnin’, but I consider that first time we met as the start of our unconventional relationship.”
Warmth is spreading through your body at how sweet this is.
“Oh my god, Joel—if I could, I’d kiss you right now!”
“Well, you’re in luck, my love, ‘cause we’re finally here.” Your horse comes to a stop, the animal snorting as its front hooves shuffle in place. “You can look.”
You lower the bandana, and your eyes widen at what’s in front of you: it’s a meadow of colorful wildflowers—the lush green grass overshadowed by the yellows, pinks, purples, whites, and blues blooming thickly everywhere, tall pine trees lining the edges, and snow-capped mountains towering high off in the distance.
You’ve never seen anything so beautiful, and it takes your breath away.
There’s movement out of the corner of your eye of Joel getting off his horse, and you’re too focused on taking in all of the scenery, seeing butterflies fluttering around and birds gliding through the air.
“Well?” he asks, and you jolt at his voice coming from the opposite side of where he was initially. “Sorry for spookin’ ya, baby.” He rubs a hand along your jean-covered thigh, and your head tilts down his way. Joel’s eyes look hopeful, and a small smile is on his lips—he’s wearing a red flannel and has a rifle on his back, the light breeze causing some of his gray strands of hair to dance atop his head. “What do you think?” he asks.
Your answer is to get off the horse, Joel’s hands immediately grabbing onto your waist to steady you as you swing your leg over the back of the animal, one foot landing on the ground, then the other—you spin around, throwing your arms around his neck, and crush your lips to his, swallowing his surprised sound. He’s automatically hugging you to him, and you never feel safer than when he holds you, knowing without a doubt he won’t let anything happen to you and will protect you with everything he has; you’d do the same for him and Ellie, the two most important people in your life.
When you break apart, your breaths come out a little heavier, and with the way he’s gazing into your eyes, you can clearly see his love for you shining through.
His hand caresses your cheek. “A good surprise?” he asks.
Your mouth is grinning as you nod. “The best surprise and worth an hour in the dark.” You hold his face as you lean in, placing loud, smacking kisses over his stubbled cheeks, along his jaw, on his chin, and lips. Joel chuckles at your enthusiasm, and you end with a peck to the tip of his nose.
“There’s more,” he says.
Your eyes go big. “What do you mean there’s more?”
“Let me tie up the horses, and I’ll show you.”
He moves away to do as he said, using ropes to tie around each of their two front legs to hobble them and keep them in place, allowing them to graze.
Joel isn’t kidding about there being more: he removes a blanket roll from his saddle that he spreads out on a patch of grass, and from his backpack, he takes out containers with strawberries, apples, cheese, some smoked meat and to drink, a bottle of apple juice made in Jackson.
He sits on the blanket, his long legs out in front of him, the food on one side of him, his rifle, and your shotgun that’d been holstered in a scabbard attached to your saddle within reach on the ground. He makes you giggle as he pulls you down into his lap, sitting sideways across it, his arms wrapping around your middle, while your hands go into the hair at the back of his head, his eyes locked on yours.
Something hard is poking you in the ass. “Is that a flashlight in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?” you ask with a wag of your eyebrows.
Joel huffs out an amused breath as he gets his hand under you and pulls his sheathed hunting knife off of his belt, tossing it next to the rifle and shotgun.
“Better?” he asks with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes.” You kiss his cheek. “Much better—thank you.” You stare at his handsome face and brush his messy bangs off his forehead—Joel grabs your hand, keeping his gaze on yours as he kisses the skin on the inside of your wrist, leaving behind tingles where his lips touch.
“If Ellie knew how secretly romantic you are,” you say, “she’d give you even more shit than she already does.”
His eyes roll, and he holds your smaller hand in his bigger one, pressing it to his heart.
“Wanna know a secret?” he asks.
“Always.”
“She avoids teasin’ me about our relationship and how I am with you—I mean, if she sees us kiss, she’ll pretend to get sick, but that’s just how teenagers are.” He shrugs. “She slips up every once in a while, and that’s expected; I think her tryin’ her best not to shit on my happiness is her sweet way of bein’ supportive.” He’s smiling fondly. “She’s the one who suggested a picnic.”
Your face matches his. “You discussed your secret anniversary plans with her?”
“Yes.” He nods. “'cause Tommy’s idea of celebratin’ was stayin’ in bed all day naked, and it made me wonder for the millionth time why the fuck Maria married his ass.”
You laugh. “And that’s pretty much a regular Saturday for us when Ellie stays at Cat’s—” Her girlfriend’s. “—for the weekend.”
He’s got an arm around your back and lets go of your hand, reaching to pluck a dandelion from the grass at the edge of the blanket.
“Exactly,” he says, “needed to do somethin’ special, and I found this place a few weeks ago while on patrol and knew you’d love it.” His eyes squint a little as his attention turns to what’s in front of him.
“I do, I love it so much.” You look around at the flowers, trees, and mountains. “It’s so beautiful!”
“Yeah, it is.” You face him again, finding his gaze already on you.
He does this often, where when you seek him out—be it at the crowded bar on a Friday night, the busy mess hall at breakfast before work, while you’re cuddled on the couch watching a movie—he’s already looking at you before your eyes land on his. It’s like you’re the only thing that exists, and you find it both lovely and insane that he loves you that much.
The other person who steals his attention is Ellie—she’s his whole world, and that’s how it should be; she’s his kid, and if Joel’s one thing, he’s a fantastic father who loves his children more than anything.
“You’ve ruined me for anyone else, Joel Miller,” you tell him, clutching his shirt with your left hand. “I love you, I love your daughter, I love the life we have, and I’m sorry, but you’re stuck with me for the rest of your life—you’re mine, and I’ll fight anyone or anything that tries to take you from me.”
“Yeah?” He takes your hand from his shirt and presses your palms together between you, making your own look so tiny with how much longer and thicker his fingers are. “Well,” he starts, your eyes closing when he leans in to nudge his nose against yours, “you’ve sure ruined me for anyone else, too, and you’re it for me—I love you, I love that you really do care about my kid, and how you make our lives better,” he rasps softly. “No one else can have you ‘cause you belong to me as I belong to you, so I see this only goin’ one way.”
“And where’s that?” you whisper.
His hand leaves yours for a moment.
“With you marryin’ me,” he says and slips something onto your ring finger—your eyes fly open seeing he’s tied the dandelion stem to make a loop your finger can fit through, the vibrant yellow flower a pretty substitute for a real diamond ring that are hard to find these days; this is Joel doing something how it was done when he was younger because, to him, it’s the right way, even though nowadays engagements are simply a verbal agreement rarely accompanied by jewelry. Or this is Joel just being romantically old-fashioned; you love it when he’s romantically old-fashioned.
Your cheeks are hurting from smiling so big, and tears are brimming in your eyes.
“If you’ll have me, of course,” he adds, and you look at him. “I know I’ve been alive a long fuckin’ time and that you can do better than someone as old as me, but I promise I’ll give you my everythin’ and the best life I can because you’re the one I wanna spend whatever time I have left breathin’ with.” The truth is evident in his chocolate-colored gaze, seeing the glimmer of hope in the dark pools. “As long as it’s somethin’ you’d want. It’s fine if you prefer we keep doin’ things as we have been without you takin’ my last name—I’m lucky enough that you like me.”
“Ask me,” you say.
His eyebrows pull together. “Ask you what…?”
“To marry you—in all the sweet things you said, you didn’t ask the question.”
His cheeks pink up, and he scratches the back of his neck. “That’s fuckin’ embarrassin’. Not much of a proposal if you don’t ask the question—sorry—let me try this again.” He clears his throat and takes your hand, being careful of the dandelion ring, his eyes seeming to get bigger. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” you answer immediately, and he rewards you with a smile big enough for his very seldom-seen dimple to make an appearance.
Then his large palms are cradling your face, and he’s kissing you like he’s just come home after being away for a while, and can’t believe he’s finally feeling your lips against his once more—he’s savoring every second and being so thorough it makes you go dizzy, your skin heating beneath your clothes.
This is one of those unforgettable kisses that will make you swoon each time it comes to mind in the years to come.
And this man asked you to marry him.
Settling down in Jackson was the best decision you’ve ever made.

Tumblr media
———◐———
Fifteen Years Ago...
———◐———
“It can’t be-”
“Run for the elders! Quickly!
“Red smoke rises from the Luna’s hearth!”
The red smoke was invented by the first wolf known to mate a witch. Legend has it that their bond lent him some of her magic and with it he created a mystical powder that unleashed bloody plumes like knife slashes in the clouds.
It was a distress call.
A wolf in danger or in need could throw the powder (usually into their fireplace) and the red smoke would rise - drawing others to their aid.
No fire was needed and the strange shimmering clouds it produced could even be seen on a moonless night.
“What happened? Where is the Luna?”
The chief elder was still out of breath, having charged over from his chambers to find Isa in hysterics.
“She’s gone! Something scared her! It triggered a half-shift!”
His eyes widened in fear and alarm.
“She’s too young to half-shift. The energy it would take-”
Isa broke into sobs again.
The girl was only five years old. She and her wolf were too volatile to merge safely. The wolf would be frightened - it would run.
Eventually the child might regain control, but she would have no way of knowing where she was or how she got there…
And she would be weak. The effects of the shift were too much for a pup that age.
The chief elder felt true terror grip his heart.
“Call for the alphas - immediately!”
Tumblr media
Although they were technically one of the oldest bloodlines in the village, Park Clan had only five families to its name - all betas.
Except for one.
Park Jimin was the first alpha ever born to the Parks and as such he became the head of his family on the day of his birth - officially the youngest clan leader in history.
When the call for alphas spread through the village, nine year-old Jimin was roused from his bed to serve on behalf of his people.
Clan alphas were required to report, regardless of their age.
“I don’t have to tell any of you what is at stake. Our pack has been entrusted with the Luna’s bloodline. Her safety is our sacred commission.”
The woods were no place for a child. If fluctuating temperatures and possible starvation weren’t bad enough, there were wild bears, packless ferals, rogue witches, snakes, and worst of all-
Unblessed wolves—animals without a human heart. They were by far the most pressing danger to the little girl.
“Surely young Park can remain at home for this,” Jeon Jinseok pressed. The boy was barely older than his grandson, Jungkook, and he was reluctant to endanger another pup needlessly.
Some quiet murmurs of assent could be heard around the elder’s chambers, however the chief elder himself shook his head sadly.
“I understand your concern… but the law is the law. Every clan alpha is sworn to such a task. He took an oath after his first transformation-”
“He was seven-”
“An oath is still an oath.”
All eyes turned to the gentle voice in the corner. The Park alpha looked impossibly small and soft.
But his gaze burned with determination.
“It is my right and duty to seek the Luna alongside all of you.” His round little jaw clenched stubbornly. “I’m not afraid.”
Tumblr media
The sound of bones and sinew shifting filled the air as one by one the clan alphas fell to their wolf forms and took off into the forest.
Until only a small silver wolf remained.
The chief elder sighed.
The boy would not undergo the Change for another six years. The mental link between his wolf and human forms was not yet complete. It was difficult for information to pass from one to the other.
“You are the wolf force of Park Jimin.”
After a moment the wolf nodded.
“You were called here because the Luna has gone missing and you must find her if you can. Search the woods until your wolf force can endure no longer and then return. If you find the child, bring her home as soon as possible.”
The young wolf nodded again and then disappeared into the night.
Tumblr media
It was cold.
The last thing you remembered was a loud noise. It was too close - you panicked-
Then there was heat and pain and running and now this-
Darkness and barren trees looming over you as far as your frightened eyes could see.
“...Hello?”
Your hands were bleeding. Tears began to slide softly down your cheek as your lips trembled.
“H-Hello?”
Tumblr media
Jimin had never been allowed into the forest alone. A myriad of new shapes and odd smells assaulted his senses as he ran.
He had only seen you a handful of times.
Bright silver eyes with a smile that could set even the coldest heart into bloom.
Now you needed him.
And he was going to save you.
It was not a question or a matter of chance in his mind. He was meant to find you. It was as if a thread from his chest was bound to a thread from yours and his wolf knew to follow it without question or thought for its significance.
I’m coming, little Luna. Hold on.
Tumblr media
Your nose was not yet fully developed, but the stench creeping through the air toward you was unmistakable.
Unblessed.
A soulless wolf.
The last time you encountered it was after a hunt. Your father killed one who attacked him and he brought it home for you to scent.
So you could recognize the smell of danger.
Gradually two shining eyes emerged from the darkness, yet unlike the wolves of your village, these were dark and fathomless-
Hungry.
You couldn’t tell much about its age or coloring, it was too thin - too dirty, but the bared teeth and steady progress closer signaled its intent clearly.
“Please,” you whispered, as it crouched back on its hind legs, preparing to strike.
Tears blurred your vision as you heard it leap forward.
But the strike never came.
Another wolf tackled it to the ground before it could reach you. The two of them tangled viciously in the moonlight; a terrifying mass of snarling and claws.
The smaller fighter was already bleeding, but he clamped down on his opponent’s throat in the first hit and hung on to it even as the animal snapped and scratched brutally at his skin.
Jimin could feel his strength beginning to fail him. The pain was excruciating, but he had to endure. If he let go, he was lost-
You were lost.
So he held.
And at last the soulless wolf collapsed on top of him.
For a moment, all was quiet.
Jimin felt the wounds over his hide begin to tug at the edge of his consciousness. Accelerated healing could only do so much... He was hurt badly.
Then two small hands began to push at the unblessed corpse. Small huffs and heaves poured from you as you worked to free him from beneath his defeated foe.
“Don’t be afraid, Silver,” you grunted, “Momma says the healing works best if you can get warm.”
With one final heave you disposed of the beast as best you could, then moved to wrap your body around your injured champion.
“I can help,” you whispered, letting the tears fall freely. His soft whimpers were the only reply you received as you snuggled in closer, running your hands gently over the soft fur.
The young wolf’s eyes were already beginning to lose focus.
“Please goddess,” you begged into the night. “Please save him.”
Then the two of you drifted into a heavy sleep.
Tumblr media
Jimin opened his eyes again just as the dawn broke.
He was still in wolf form, but the pain of his injuries had lessened considerably.
Either that or he was becoming numb.
His eyes dropped to the figure curled up next to him and his heart stirred. You were so pale… and he could feel your small body shivering violently against his chest.
She will not last much longer...
It took nearly everything he had to stand to his feet and nudge you awake.
“Will you bring me back, Silver?” you asked weakly.
Jimin nodded and the two of you stumbled forward into the forest, trusting the vague recollections of his wolf instincts to lead you home.
Tumblr media
Isa was beside herself with worry. Wolves came and went throughout the night-
But there was still no sign of you.
And the odds of a child surviving the woods alone with no heat and no protection were slim at best.
Her hands shook as she gathered feed for the horses from the storeroom near the back of the house. She willed herself to complete the task - any task - in an effort to busy her mind and perhaps achieve a moment of respite.
Her hand closed around the back door handle and she started forward - only to nearly lose her balance over something lying on the porch.
The bucket of feed dropped from her grasp, sending kernels of grain in all directions.
Two bodies lay in a heap at her feet, clutching one another desperately. The Luna and her silver wolf were covered in matted blood and dirt.
But they were alive.
Isa began to scream, drawing out the other two occupants of the house; her husband Roojin and his younger sister, a beta healer named Ryn.
“Oh my goddess,” Ryn gasped, “that’s the Park alpha! I heard some of the elders saying that he hadn’t checked in last night!”
“Get them inside. If we don’t act quickly we could lose them.”
Roojin tried to lift you away from the wolf, but the action was enough to rouse you and you immediately began to kick and scream frantically.
“No! I won’t leave him!” you sobbed, wrapping your body even tighter around the injured pup. “Silver, wake up! Please wake up!”
“Baby you need to let him go! We have to treat him!”
But you were frantic, refusing - violently - to be separated from your rescuer.
Ryn was eventually forced to grab a syringe from her field kit to sedate you.
Isa carried your limp body to the fireplace and began to peel off your wet clothes while Ryn and Roojin dealt with Jimin’s injuries in the kitchen. Blood dripped over the tabletop and puddled ominously on the floor while they worked.
“It looks like he was attacked.” Ryn’s eyes began to water. “What a brave little boy.”
“How the hell did he survive this?”
“I don’t know, but without a healing touch he’ll die.” She ripped her gloves off and rolled up her sleeves. “Stand back.”
Tumblr media
Twenty minutes later Isa and Roojin caught the young healer as her legs gave out from under her. She had poured the majority of her energy into restoring the young Park alpha - perhaps more than was strictly safe-
But he would survive and that was all that mattered.
“I must contact the elders,” Isa murmured as she helped Ryn to a seat near the hearth. “In all the chaos I forgot to tell them that we found her.”
Roojin sighed, letting his eyes drift back to the table.
“That pup brought her back, but I wonder if they’ll even believe it. I wouldn’t - not if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.”
“No...” Ryn whispered from the chair. “You can’t tell them about the boy.”
“Why not? He’s the only reason she’s still alive. He deserves to be recognized.”
“You don’t understand,” she shook her head weakly. “His clan is nothing. They have no power - no other alphas. This will make him a target. The alpha pups will challenge him and the stronger clans will see him as a threat to their influence…”
She pulled herself upright and limped over to the table where the young wolf slept.
“But he's just a child….and small for his age at that. He has no powerful clansmen to protect him from the ramifications of this.”
Her hands clenched to fists.
“When his human form returns, he won’t remember saving the Luna. We’ll take him to his mother’s home at nightfall - make it seem like he wandered back. He may garner some respect for surviving the woods, but then they’ll leave him alone… and he can go on living his life in peace.”
Ryn turned to face them both with a determined expression.
“We owe him that.”
Tumblr media
“Where is the silver wolf? Where have you taken him?”
As soon as the sedative wore off you reached for the boy once again, only to find that he was gone.
“The silver wolf was hurt very badly, sweetheart. Your aunt carried him away to be treated.”
“I have to go with him! He needs me!”
“No, honey - you can’t-”
Isa pulled you into her arms and you collapsed into helpless sobs. The last twenty-four hours had finally caught up with you.
You were too weak to fight back.
“Luna… the silver wolf is in danger. Are you willing to keep him safe?”
You nodded fiercely, letting the flow of your tears soak through your mother’s sleeves.
“Then you must never tell another soul that the silver wolf saved you. No one can know that he was with you in the forest.”
Your eyes narrowed in confusion.
“But-”
“You will tell everyone that you found the way back alone. Do not mention the silver wolf.”
Isa lifted your chin till your eyes met hers.
“Promise me, Luna.”
Your heart squeezed painfully in your chest as you thought of your champion. He had spared you from a gruesome fate and you did not even know his name.
You wanted so desperately to thank him.
Last night, you were so cold - so afraid - that you hadn’t said it...
Now you never could.
So instead you would protect him - no matter what it cost.
“I promise.”
———◐———
Today...
———◐———
“I don’t like him.”
Jimin tilted his head slightly toward his best friend.
“Who?”
Taehyung took a long sip of water then moved his hand to cover his mouth. To an outside observer he would appear to be wiping excess liquid from his lips.
“The senior envoy from the Iron Claw pack.” He shook his head. “Something about him is off. He’s ill at ease.”
All the major packs of the mountain nations dispatched representatives to greet and solidify their relations with the new Alpha.
Any pack who failed to send a proper delegation risked a diplomatic incident.
The first twenty-four hours held great significance when it came to the transfer of power. The official term for the tradition-packed period between the revelation of the Alpha and his ultimate reunion with the Luna was called “The King’s New Moon.”
The new moon was the darkest phase of the lunar cycle and the immediate separation from his mate was meant to be a test of the Alpha’s restraint and bearing.
Jimin wanted to put his fist through a wall.
He missed you.
Fighting Namjoon was nothing compared to the torture of this bureaucratic circus.
As the day progressed he was extremely grateful to have Yoongi and Taehyung at his side. Yoongi agreed to act as interim Praetor while Namjoon recovered and he and Taehyung were quick to fill in any knowledge gaps Jimin had with regards to protocol.
The first round of ceremonial greetings between packs dragged on more than an hour before the bell struck for a brief recess. In fact, until Taehyung’s rather strange pronouncement, nearly every moment played out with boring predictability.
Though there was one notable surprise.
Apparently the Iron Claw pack had just undergone a change of leadership and was now under the command of a female alpha named Azira Kai.
Authority in the Iron Claw pack was traditionally decided through combat, and Azira beat nearly thirty-five challengers to ascend as queen.
Female alphas were extraordinarily rare. Jimin knew they existed, but Azira was the first one he’d ever heard of.
Iron Claw’s senior envoy delivered the news himself at the start of the ceremony and personally conveyed the queen’s well wishes.
Jimin eyed the representative in question speculatively from his corner of the table. At first glance the man seemed much like every other emissary gathered in the crowded hall to fulfil centuries old obligations. But Taehyung had always possessed a strange sense about people.
His instincts could not be easily dismissed.
“I will keep that in mind,” he whispered as he sent the young man a courteous nod.
Tumblr media
The sun had already begun to set when a messenger from the chief elder’s chambers arrived at your door. At long last the ceremonial requirements were drawing to a close and soon the elder’s council would be sending you instructions.
However...‘soon’ could mean anything from twenty minutes to five hours.
“You might as well rest while you can,” Jin teased with a salacious wiggle of his brows. “Who knows what strenuous activity you might find yourself involved in when they finally let that boy loose.”
You rolled your eyes, trying to pretend that your cheeks weren’t burning with embarrassment.
“I will rest, but not for any reason you’re thinking.”
Truth be told, your nerves were a bit… frayed.
A frustration was building within you and nothing seemed to satisfy it. You weren’t even sure what you were wanting, but you definitely wanted it.
“Of course not,” your cousin chuckled as you gathered your gloves and wandered back to the bedroom.
An hour later Jin’s boredom found him snuggled up on the couch near the fireplace reading over an old cookbook from your mother’s pantry.
“Heavens… no wonder Aunt Isa’s kimchi is so dry. This is a disgrace.”
Suddenly the front door began to shake and pound violently. Strange smells carried through the air and his eyes widened.
Foreign wolves.
He drew in a deep breath and immediately growled in frustration.
Foreign alphas.
A small bowl of red powder sat on the mantle above the hearth. Jin just barely managed to toss it into the flames before the door splintered off its hinges.
“Hello boys,” he drawled, unleashing a massive dose of pheromones while the knives strapped to his forearms slid smoothly to his hands. “What brings you here?”
Tumblr media
“I just heard the strangest news,” Min Yoongi narrowed his eyes at the small scrap of paper passed to him by one of the council aides.
“Oh?”
The next set of guild masters were making their way to Jimin at a snail’s pace. It would be several seconds before he needed to greet them.
“One of the healers sent word that Namjoon has disappeared from his assigned recovery room.” He shook his head curiously. “Where do you suppose he’s gone?”
Jimin’s eyes widened.
That mangy mutt. He’s probably bent Yunli over every surface of her brother’s house by now. Goddess above! He couldn’t hold out for six more days?
“I’m sure I have no idea.”
I should have killed him. This is a disaster. He can barely walk, how does he expect to-
“The Miner’s Guild is honored to serve at the pleasure of the Alpha.”
Jimin nodded regally and forced up a pleasant smile.
“The honor is entirely mine, Master Lee. I look forward to-”
A loud crash split the solemn hush of the room as a young member of the council guard burst through the heavy wooden doors.
“Red smoke! Red smoke rises from the Luna’s hearth!”
Jimin felt his heart plummet into his stomach.
Chaos erupted immediately.
“Call for the guards!”
“We must notify the healers.”
“The messengers just spoke to her-”
“Is it an attack?”
“ENOUGH!”
The Alpha’s voice cut across the assembly with authoritative resonance.
Every eye turned to him in expectation.
But he could only think of you.
“Jung, lock the building down. Take your clansmen and seal off every entrance.”
Murmurs began to stir through the hall as Hoseok directed his people toward the access points, but he ignored them.
“Choi. Make for the healers. Have a dozen of them meet us there.”
Jimin was already heading for the door. The deadly length of his claws flashed ominously in the firelight.
“Kim, Min, Jeon - with me.”
The three alphas in question fell in step behind him without a word.
Tumblr media
The scene at the Luna’s home was nightmarish.
Jimin ran to your room immediately, but all he found was a broken window and the lingering scent of your fear.
His wolf howled in anguish as he fell to his knees and screamed in rage.
At the front of the house four badly beaten bodies lay strewn about the kitchen and living room area. Most of the furniture was destroyed and the scent of carnage soaked the air.
“Jin!”
The omega stood at the center of the rubble. There was a nasty slash running up his right leg and another grievous wound near his ribs.
But his arms were wrapped around a massive foriegn wolf with the thin blade of his favorite knife pressed against the intruders throat.
“What happened here?” Yoongi gasped. “And that smell-” he moved his hand to cover his nose.
“Pheromones,” Taehyung nearly gagged.
His eyes fell to the corpses - examining their injuries with a critical gaze.
“Jin, you dangerous bastard.”
The omega simply smiled and forced the prisoner onto his knees.
“I don’t understand…” Jungkook shook his head.
“He flooded them with omega pheromones... These four were unmated.” The Kim alpha let out a cold chuckle. “He triggered their ruts… and they killed each other over him.”
Jungkook’s eyes widened.
Male omegas really were terrifying.
Taehyung’s eyes narrowed and he considered the scene.
“None of this makes sense. The scent markers are clearly from the Iron Claw pack. They didn’t even bother to mask…”
Jungkook and Yoongi began to search the bodies for any hint of their motives or identity when Jimin returned from your room. His fury was palpable in the air around him.
“Why would anyone kidnap a Luna?” he snarled. “The divine bloodline is sacred to all wolves. Who would be so reckless?”
Jin shook his head.
“I don’t know.” His knife twisted into the prisoner’s neck. “But he does.”
Jimin crouched down in front of the foreigner, fighting every urge in his soul to tear the mountains apart for his mate.
“Where is she?”
The prisoner sneered.
“You may be a powerful Alpha, but you are not of my pack or my blood.  I’ll never tell you anything.”
“Oh,” Jimin’s eyes flashed with golden fire, “I think you will.”
Tumblr media
Heavy.
That was how you felt.
Your body was sore (like it had been tossed and carried a long distance) and your mind was out of focus (as if everything around you was moving either too quickly or too slowly - honestly you couldn’t quite tell).
You remembered being drugged; some sort of compound pressed against your nose and mouth.
Glass from the window shattered onto your face…
Then unfamiliar scents and unfamiliar hands closed in on all sides.
Too fast for you to react.
Too shocking for anyone to have predicted.
Nothing like this had ever happened and there was no reason to believe it would.
To harm a Luna was sacrilege.
It was simply not done.
What could drive men to such a course of action?
You should be afraid; terrified even.
But you weren’t.
Your eyes fluttered open to take your new surroundings. You could vaguely see the shape of seven or eight wolves - alphas by the smell of them-
And then you smiled.
It wasn’t your usual impish grin or anything close to soft or inviting.
It was a cold twist that crept over your lips as you watched your abductors set up their camp.
After a moment, one of them noticed your strange expression.
“Looks like the little Luna hit her head on the way here,” he called out to his comrades with an amused snort. “You should have been more careful with her, Mac.”
He shook his head and made his way over to where you were tied up. The young alpha reeked so heavily of sweat and self-importance, you almost gagged.
“What’s got you so amused, Miss Luna?”
It was more of a taunt than a question, but your smile widened nonetheless.
“My mate is going to kill you.”
Shock flickered over his features for just a second before he threw his head back and laughed.
“We’ll be long gone before your sweet little alpha even knows we’re here.” He gripped your chin between his fingers and you snarled. “We masked our scent as soon as we got you - and there isn’t a wolf alive that could track our crew through the woods.”
“You’re wrong,” you whispered.
Jimin’s face flashed through your mind - followed immediately by another memory, buried deeply, but never forgotten—
of a frightened little girl and the silver wolf who braved the forest and fought a monster to save her.
“He’ll come for me - no matter what precautions you’ve taken.” You leaned forward a bit, letting the conviction in your gaze blaze through to the depths of your captor’s soul. “And then - he’ll come for you.”

She looked over at Bilbo, who was stirring, and decided it would be a good idea to prepare him a cup of warm tea with some honey and milk. Y/N remembered Bilbo loved this as a child.
So, her next steps took her to the hobbit's kitchen.
Before she stepped inside, Y/N noticed one - perhaps from the older ones - dwarf, who prepared a steaming cup of tea already.
The dwarf didn't seemed to trust her - of course - but his eyes little softened, because she knew Gandalf and Bilbo.
"What tea is that?" Y/N asked instead, genuiely interested.
"Charmomile, for Master Baggins." Y/N hummed and the dwarf quickly left the little hobbit kitchen. You looked around, more concentrated this time. Then, you looked over the hall, pantry, and living room, where was Bilbo, Gandalf and some of the dwarves.
Baggins', now Bilbo's house, has never been un-practical. Maybe for Y/N by it's size, but other than that, there was everything one would need for life.
When Bilbo catched her eyes, Y/N could clearly see he was uncomfortable, upset and absolutely, absolutely done with the subject.
The dwarves.
But most importantly...
Gandalf.
You shrugged, and decided to leave him his burglar-not-burglar game. Bilbo would not be patient forever, but he was mannered and clever enough to know what to do. You were sure the hobbit would feel his Took side with desire for an adventure again.
And take his chance to escape Sackville-Baginses.
As you walked around, you noticed some of the pictures. They seemed to be new - or at least you didn't remembered them.
You walked closer, and stepped on something. You looked down, and noticed it was a dagger. You've never seen the design before, but assumed it must be one of the dwarves'. You picked it up and studied it, when you overheard a voice next to you.
"Careful with this, it's been just sharpened." You turned to see a blonde, blue-eyed dwarf, with braided moustache. He seemed to have the same twinkle in his eyes as Kili.
"I can handle sharp things," Y/N said and looked back at the knife.
"It's nice. Not too light, but not as heavy either." Y/N was thinking aloud. She completely forgot the dwarf next to her, as she studied the dagger.
"You know Master Baggins," He suddenly said. Y/N turned to him.
What the-did he just-
"I do," You nodded, and placed the dagger to his hand.
What the-no, he just didn't-
"You don't look like you are related," he continued.
"That's because we aren't." You ended the topic. Instead, it was your time to ask.
"Who are you?"
"Fili, at your service m'lady," he gently took your hand and kissed the back of your hand, his eyes not leaving yours.
"Y/N, at yours...Fili," You said.
"Oh, Y/N, can I-can I talk to you, for a second?" Bilbo came and you gladly walked aside with him, while Fili send you a wink.
"Bilbo, to answer some of your questions - no, I didn't knew-"
"I'm not talking about the, the dwarves," Bilbo looked over the room with frown on his face.
"Then what is it, my little friend?" You said quietly in attempt to brighten up the situation. Bilbo was almost adorable with frowned pouty face, hands folded on his chest, patting the floor with his foot...only if you could stand straight in his house. Your back thought the size of his house was not adorable at all.
"Well, um...did Gandalf told you to bring them along?" You looked at him with scrunched face, and rolled your eyes.
"I wouldn't be coming if I knew there were dwarves involved. So, if anything, I share your unpopular opinion." And ruffled his hair. He jumped up.
"I'm not a little hobbit anymore, you don't have to do this," Bilbo said through gritted teeth, and you grinned.
"Well, you still are kind of little," You teased him futher, until a dwarf with sharp blue eyes, long, dark hair, and the biggest grumpy and pouty face you've ever seen (not even Bilbo could do that, when he was angy little hobbit).
That dwarf shot you a glare, and also to Bilbo, who was taken aside by him and Gandalf, again.
You felt sorry for Bilbo.
When he was free, you overheard him muttering something about 'surely not going', 'not going anywhere', 'wizards', and so on. You decided to go to sleep, because all of the dwarves were asleep already, and you needed to be up early.
You woken up quickly. The first thing you've heard was the snoring. You scrunched your face, and quickly packed your things. Then, you walked out of Bag End, and decided to wait for them there.
The sunrise was nice time, especially to prepare your horse for the day.
"Shh," you cooed her quietly. It was beautiful mare, tall, and very, very clever.
"It will be okay. We will find dad, and we will go away, to live far away...everything is going to be just fine," You muttered.
"You ready?" Kili stood next to you with a grin on his face. You jumped up a little.
"I am." You said, and noticed Kili's expression as he looked at your horse. You let out a laugh.
"You've never seen a horse before?" Kili walked back a little.
"Not really," he said and you noticed his blushed cheeks.
"Kili!" You both looked over to Fili, standing between two ponies, who called him.
-
"Do you think Bilbo will come?" Kili asked you.
"That hobbit won't show up," Balin said. He was on his pony next to Kili, so he thought he talked to him.
"It's no surprise. Why would Master Baggins leave his home," Thorin (as was the grumpy dwarf named) said.
"I wouldn't understimate hobbits, and especially not Master Baggins," Gandalf said as he smoked his pipe.
"I am sure he is going to come," He said.
And that's when the bet started.
-
It wasn't even five minutes after you left Shire, when you overheard Bilbo's voice in the distance.
"Waaait!"
You looked over to Gandalf, who was hiding a laugh.
"You planned this?" You quietly asked and motioned to the hobbit, who was breathing heavily.
"Well, perhaps," he said, and you scoffed a little and shook your head, as the dwarves seated Bilbo on his pony.
-
The day was beautiful. It was actually quite warm, just warm so you could put down your cloak.
As the evening was approaching, and the sun was setting into palette of gold and velvet, and the sky was getting darker, Thorin decided it was time to set up camp. After a quick argument with Gandalf, the wizard left to seek company of himself. So, there was nothing easier, than to just finding the best place to place your bedroll.
You, Fili and Kili were on first watch. You laid down on your bedroll, and watched the stars. It was cloudless night, plus the crackling sound of fire, and smell of fresh night air was relaxing.
Bilbo was just coming back from his pony, when a sound in distance made him freeze.
"W-what was that?" He pointed to the distance, while looking at Kili.
"Orcs," he said in low, deep voice. You sat up. Bilbo had a part of Took in himself, but he was not that much of a Took.
"There is going to be plenty of those," Fili said, and, obviously, Kili continued.
"They come at night, no screams, just lots of blood," He looked at Bilbo, and the shadows in his face, along with his deep and low voice made it come out horribly scary. Him and Fili started chuckling, but you sighed.
"The way you two snore would make them run for hills, so I wouldn't be that worried," You said, and noticed Bilbo to relax by the corner of your eye.
Kili looked over at you. You pulled out book from your pack. He quickly recognized it, even in the darkness of the night. It was that book you flipped through back in Bag End.
You sat comfortably down, and looked over the illustrations on the pages, and softly touched them.
"What is the book you are reading about, lassie?" Balin asked. You didn't looked up.
"It's a book with tales and stories my...father wrote down," you answered.
"He used to read them to me," you shrugged.
"Would you read some of them-ow, what was that for?!" Kili whisper-yelled at his brother, who chuckled.
"You're a child, Kee," He muttered to himself, and Kili pouted. But Fili was curious as well, which Kili didn't needed to know.
"Well...this one," You flipped a few pages futher.
"This one is called Strange thief and the stars," Y/N comfortably sat and started reading.
"There was once a man. He wasn't very known by name, but by his eyes. His eyes, deep and dark, with sparkles, reminding of stars. Nobody has ever seen eyes like this before, and people were whispering he has stars themselves in his eyes," You slid the tips of your fingers over the drawing, remembering the precision your father has made into repairing them.
"Many women tried to grab his attention, but anytime they didn't sucsceeded, the sparks in their eyes were less visible, but in his as well. And that is why men has decided to call him 'the thief of stars', or a 'strange thief of stars'. He was wandering through the lands, until he found what, as he realized, was looking for,"
"What happened next?" Bilbo asked.
"That girl didn't want to talk to him. She was very kind and caring, but not naive. One day, however, she found a dragon. Big dragon, who seemed scary, but saved her from orcs. The beast's eyes reminded her of someone, yet she didn't knew of whom." You realized everyone was quiet, listening to you, as you spoken.
"The next day, she met the man. He runned into her, in a rush, in a fear - and asked her "Did you see the dragon too?". The young maiden nodded, and helped him to get to safety, as he was very nervous and scared. Since that day, they became closer and closer. One day, when a few years passed, her father - an old, wise and kind man - said, his daughter will marry someone, who gives her something very special. The young man came the next day in their house they lived in. He said," you flipped the page.
" 'I do not have much to offer - gold, silver, or gems - but I do have this," he took out a notebook out of his coat, and offered it. The girl's father took the notebook, and opened it. It was full of drawings of flowers, animals and people - but mainly of one special maiden, when she was laughing, collecting flowers, brushing her hair, cooking, reading...When she came there, and looked throught the book, her father looked at her, and she nodded. So, he looked deeply into the young man's eyes, and said 'She chose you.' "
You finished the story, and Kili giggled at how interested his brother was.
"Now who's the child here,"

Favorite Tropes Book Recs: Mentors
This is specifically when a mentor slowly becomes a romantic figure to the character. I know, I know, this could get icky if not done right. This isn't a weird student/teacher or superior/subordinate situation either, those gross me out too. This is purely when a character has a mentor figure that they themselves becomes equals to or surpass before becoming romantically involved. It's like a "I'm teaching you how to use magic/fight, oh no, we're falling in love" sort of thing! (If you're still worried/not sure what I mean, read through my recs and hopefully you'll see)
find other similar lists here!
always feel free to comment/send recommendations and suggestions!
Uprooted by Naomi Novik: This definitely fits the 'mentor to lover' thing, and while I enjoyed the novel when I read it, I'm due for a reread. The reread very well may change my opinion (and many people have mixed feelings about the romance in the book) but! I will use my own critical thinking that god gave me. adult fantasy
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: One of my all time favorite books. Set on a fictional island of Thisby, every year, competitors race the magical, deadly water horses in November. Reigning champion Sean Kendrick is expected to win, and Puck Connolly enters the race as the first girl. ya fantasy
The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy) by S.A. Chakraborty: This series is lighter on the trope, but it does come up with the main character and a love interest helping her navigate a new world and court politics. A very wholesome romance founded out of a mutual respect for each other! About a women in Cairo in the 1800s who accidentally summons a djinn warrior and enters a magical city. adult fantasy
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden: Winternight trilogy my beloved. There is quite an age gap, considering the mentor is the Winter King and immortal. But it's so so good and so so well done! adult fantasy
The Naming (The Books of Pellinor) by Alison Croggon: I really can't say much without major spoilers but this series similar to lord of the rings and has very similar vibes as well. A dark lord and music as magic and bards. I read this series so long ago, and I am well overdue for a reread. ya fantasy
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo: The romance of this book/series hasn't really started yet (since book 2 hasn't been released yet) but it is strongly hinted at and please Leigh Bardugo, at least give me a date for the second book!! A murder mystery set at Yale with ghosts and secret societies. The relationship is between two college students, where one is a mentor figure to the other. adult urban fantasy
Graceling by Kristin Cashore: A fantasy world where some people are born very good at a particular skill set. A young woman, Katsa, investigates a kidnapping and questions surrounding a neighboring country. Romance is between Katsa and a man who travels with her and acts as a guide. ya fantasy
Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas: This series definitely fits the trope and happens on more than one instance. The series is generally about a young woman who fights for her homeland against a dark king. young adult/ new adult fantasy
I'm not including any tbr books, because I don't really see any from my tbr that explicitly have mentor -> lover and it's not always a trope that is very apparent!

Summary: The new Mrs. Carlyle learns to navigate her odd place in society and finds unwavering support in her husband and in her friends.
Notes: Complete and utter fluff. This was technically supposed to be a Christmas imagine, but we all know how bad I can be with keeping deadlines, so it’s now a winter one. Oops. Anyway, Phillip is one of my favorites and I hope you guys enjoy reading Zac Efron imagines as much as I love writing them! This imagine was also kind of inspired by Ross and Demelza’s relationship in Poldark. Be sure to let me know what you think!

The night, while cold, was lively and inviting. Snow drifted softly to the earth, lightly dusting your shawl and your skirt as you waited outside the theater house. The street lamps’ golden hallows made your beaming face glow, your smile surely shining brightly for miles. Tonight was perfect.
“Can I give you a lift, miss?” A carriage driver smiled down at you.
“Thank you, but no. I’m sure my-”
“Free of charge.” He enticed further, his stare beginning to make you uncomfortable. “I’m full of holiday spirit this evening, especially for a pretty thing like you.”
“Thank you, sir, but again, I have to decline.” You weren’t used to this kind of attention and you weren’t sure how to politely escape. It was almost funny. This man probably saw you a hundred times on the street before but never bat an eye. You were different then.
The man continued to badger you until another voice interjected.
“I appreciate your concern, sir,” Phillip appeared beside you, laying a hand on the small of your back, “but I have already secured a carriage for my wife and myself.” The man stammered an apology before taking his horses elsewhere. You laughed lightly.
“I was starting to think you’d abandoned me.” You teased. Phillip placed a sweet kiss on your cheek.
“I was caught by the Whiltons before I could escape. I hope you weren’t waiting too long.”
“Long enough to be noticed, apparently.” You laughed in disbelief. “I can’t remember ever being noticed before.” It wasn’t entirely true, of course, for it wasn’t long ago that a certain leader of the circus had noticed you. Phillip chuckled.
“If you don’t want to be noticed, my dear, you are going to have to stop looking so lovely.” Phillip’s blue eyes sparkled as he brushed his nose against yours, bringing your lips to his in a kiss.
A sudden rush of cold air made you shiver and Phillip quickly helped you into the carriage. Your smile outshined all of the lights in the square, your eyes wild and bright with excitement as you watched the city go by. Before, the holidays were harsh and forgiving. A reminder of your place in the world- starving and cold and unloved. Now, in the arms of the person who had shown you love like you had never known, the world was merrier. Even the snow that you once dreaded sparkled as it flitted down through the air.
“What are you thinking about?” Phillip asked, smiling admiringly at your wondrous expression. You smirked.
“How I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it.”
“Get used to what?”
“Being your wife.” You tore your stare away from the snowy sky to look into his eyes. “Just hearing you say it…it’s so silly, but I feel like sometimes I have to be reminded or else I don’t believe it.”
“Would you like me to remind you more often?” He bit his lip and his eyes held a look you had only recently begun to recognize.
“Phillip.” You gasped, having to cover your mouth to stifle your laughter. He kissed your cheek.
“Did you enjoy yourself tonight?” He exited the carriage first, taking your hand as you stepped down onto the pavement.
“It was lovely.” You beamed. Your husband had taken you to the ballet as a belated Christmas present. It was unlike anything you’d seen before, not that you had much experience with finer arts. You used to press your ear against the outer walls just to hear the music. Now you had box seats. Sometimes the changes made your head spin. “They’re all so graceful and elegant and… beautiful.”
With a light sigh, your eyes looked up at the sky again. Somewhere in the distance, you could hear bells. Not heavy church bells swinging back and forth in some chapel. These were light and soft. Phillip’s hand on your cheek brought you out of your trance.
“Do you know what I think is beautiful?” You gave him a small smile.
“I don’t need cheering up, Phillip. I had a wonderful time.”
“I think the way you look at the world like it's a gift is beautiful. Even after the life you grew up in, you still can see things spectacularly.” Before you could say anything else, Phillip pulled you into a kiss. Again, you could hear bells, only this time they were closer. You imagined them as stars having fallen to earth, bouncing lightly down the street towards you.
“Phillip,” You started once the kiss had ended. He smiled affectionately.
“Yes, dear?”
“I believe it’s time we turn in for the night. Don’t you agree?” Your smirk matched his previous expression. Phillip scooped you up in his arms, causing both of you to laugh, and carried you inside.
-
It took every ounce of self control you had not to escape to the kitchens to hide. At least amongst the cooks and waiters you would feel more like you belonged. Here, you felt like, for lack of a better phrase, a circus attraction.
Phillip had been whisked away by P.T. to help impress some visiting family of prominence, leaving you to face the wolves.
“Mrs. Carlyle, I wasn’t expecting to see you here.” Miss Martha Whilton approached you with a less than gracious smile on her face. You put on the most polite smile you could while also desperately searching the crowded room for your husband.
“Miss Whilton, how wonderful to see you.”
“I had the pleasure of running into Mr. Carlyle the other night at the ballet.” Her tone seemed genuine enough that you let down your guard.
“Yes, he took me as a late Christmas gift.” You beamed, fondly remembering that night. Her expression soured.
“I’ve found that the ballet is nothing like it used to be.” She looked at you pointedly. “Too many ugly ducklings and not enough swans.” With that sneer, she sashayed past you to join her other snobbish friends. You wanted to shrink into the floor.
“You shouldn’t pay any attention to them.” From the crowd emerged P.T.’s wife with a kind and knowing face. “Martha is still furious that you snatched Phillip away from her.”
“It’s not as if I expected it to happen.” You laughed nervously. Your marriage to Phillip was just as much of a surprise to you as it was to society. “How do you do it Mrs. Barnum? Survive all of the small talk and backhanded comments?”
“Years and years of practice. And please, call me Charity.” She hooked her arm through yours and the two of you walked about the room together, careful to avoid any more contact with Miss Whilton or her fellow vipers. Eventually, you found your husbands, P.T. with his bright showman smile. Even after he stepped aside as the center of the circus, he still knew how to perform. Phillip had a drink in his hand and his smile was far more strained.
When he saw you, however, his demeanor immediately brightened.
“There you are, darling.” He sounded practically relieved. You leaned in close so only he would hear.
“If you needed saving, all you had to do was ask.” You whispered, causing him to chuckle. He kissed your cheek.
“I’ll keep that in mind for next time.”
“Must there be a next time?” You whined a little louder than you meant to. Luckily, P.T. and Charity just laughed.
“I guess I’ve kept you both here long enough.” P.T. took Phillip’s drink and downed the rest himself. “You two go have a nice evening.”
“Are you sure?” Phillip asked, barely able to contain his enthusiasm. P.T. nodded and Phillip gave him a pat on the shoulder. “Thank you.” P.T. just laughed and Phillip laced his fingers with yours and hurriedly walked towards the exit.
As soon as you were out of the view of prying eyes, he placed his hands on either side of your face and pulled you in for a kiss. There, hiding in the shadow of the doorway, you felt like you were back at the beginning of your relationship, stealing moments after shows behind the stands.
“Mr. Carlyle, someone is going to see us.” You giggled, stepping towards the stairs, but he pulled you back into the darkness.
“And if they do?” He smirked. “They all think I’m a terrible scandal anyway.”
“What did you expect to happen when you ran off and joined the circus?”
“I hadn’t expected to fall in love and yet here we are.” His charming smile grew and you gave him a quick kiss before retreating down the stairs, laughing as he chased you.
He didn’t catch you until you were outside, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you towards him. You continued merrily down the street, hand in hand and listening to the distant ringing of bells.

Gavriel’s hand hit the sergeant’s desk with a thump.
“We need to know where she is, and we need to know where she is, now.”
“I have no information,” Sergeant Nazari said, through gritted teeth. “I’ve told you as much ten times now, I don’t know when it’ll get through your head.”
Sergeant Nazari had been on the Cadre’s payroll for the past five years. He’d been incredibly helpful through the years, had saved all of their asses a million times, but in this particular situation, Gavriel was about to lose his shit.
He opened his mouth, prepared to scream at the man on the other side of the desk, but Vaughan’s hand gently rested on his shoulder.
Vaughan was right.
Nazari had never lied to them before. He was loyal.
If he was saying he didn’t know where Maeve was, he really didn’t know where she was.
“Fine,” Gavriel breathed. “If you find anything out-.”
“You’ll be the first to know,” Sergeant Nazari promised.
With a nod, Gavriel and Vaughan exited the station, pulling out their cigarette cases the moment they stepped out into the street.
“I don’t get it,” Gavriel began, shaking his head. “Someone in this damned city has to know where Maeve has holed herself up.”
He met Vaughan’s weary gaze.
“I know,” Gavriel sighed. “We’re running out of time.”
Vaughan nodded his agreement, his shoulders slumping, but his pace remaining steady as they walked back to their horses. After they mounted their saddles, they were hurrying out of town, back toward the estate.
When they returned, Rhoe and his men were standing outside, smoking, a worried Lysandra pacing in front of them.
“News?” Gavriel asked, before he even hopped off his horse.
Before anyone could answer, a car came speeding up the dirt drive, and Fenrys had the door open before Lorcan had it parked.
“They’re at the old Cartwright Manor!” he yelled, chest heaving, as if they’d been hurrying. Which, with such information, they should have been. “Since Cartwright died last year, it’s been uninhabited.”
The Cartwright Manor was only a few miles west.
“Let’s go,” Gavriel said, readying to mount his horse, yet again.
“We need a plan,” Lorcan said, turning off the engine.
“Like hell we do!” Gavriel yelled. “We’re running out of time!”
“And if we go in there with no plan and create chaos, we’re all going to fucking die!” Lorcan replied, slamming his door shut behind him.
Gavriel knew that Lorcan was right, but it still pissed him off to admit it. “Then what, pray tell, is the plan?”
Lorcan ignored Gavriel’s sarcastic comment. “I don’t fucking know, but I know we need one.”
“Before we all start fighting, because that’s where I see this is headed,” Fenrys began, stepping between them. “I have an idea.”
All eyes landed on him.
“I went to the Cartwright Manor, often, as a kid, Con and I,” he began. “I know the layout pretty well.”
“Why?” Gavriel asked, curiously.
“Is that information necessary right now?” Lorcan muttered.
“Our father was good friends with Mr. Cartwright,” Fenrys answered, plainly. “The servant’s entrance is in the back. There’s this creepy, narrow old tunnel beneath the kitchens, I assume they’re probably being held there. Con and I used to joke that that’s where old Cartwright took his prisoners. Through the servant’s entrance, just to the left, there’s a door. Most mistake it as a coat closet, but it’s a staircase that will lead you downstairs.”
Lorcan nodded, slowly. “We have no idea how many of Maeve’s men are there.”
“True,” Fenrys agreed, and nodded to Rhoe and his men. “But we have them, and plenty of ammunition.”
“So, what?” Gavriel asked. “We break through the servant’s entrance and start shooting?”
Fenrys blinked, shrugging. “Do you have a better idea?”
Gavriel blew a puff of smoke into the air.
No.
No he didn’t.
“We’re all going to die,” Lorcan muttered.
From there, no one said a word. Maybe Lorcan was right, maybe they’d all get shot, maybe Maeve’s men would completely overpower them and everything leading up to this point would be all for nothing.
Elide’s death.
Connall’s death.
Every night they had laid awake, unsure of their futures.
Every anxious day, every agonizing hour, every trip to the hospital or sighting of blood.
But they wouldn’t leave Aelin there, wouldn’t leave Rowan there.
He was their leader.
So Gavriel tossed his cigarette into the dirt and stepped on it. “Let’s reload.”
~~~~~
Rowan had always hated Maeve.
When he was younger, he used to have nightmares of Maeve as an old witch who lived deep in the woods, eating children, like the one from Hansel and Gretel. As he grew older, he felt foolish for ever feeling such a thing, but now, he was right back to imagining her as his living nightmare.
His head hurt, dominantly from the gash on the side of his head. His vision was blurred, blood trailing down his chin. He was fairly certain he had lost a tooth.
Or two.
He could deal with teeth, though. It was the least of what he was about to lose.
Although he had no idea what time it was, he had caught glimpses of the sun high in the sky as he was dragged out of his room with Aelin and brought into a different one. She had cried, screamed as they took him, but he had told her that he loved her, that he would see her soon.
Even though he had no way of knowing if that were true.
He was tied to a chair, weak, weaponless, waiting.
The walls around him were covered in wallpaper, although the windows had been boarded up. He was somewhere upstairs, somewhere in the main living area. There was an oil lamp on a small table not far from him, but aside from that and his chair, the room was empty.
And the old, Persian rug beneath his feet.
The rug that was splattered with his blood.
He groaned, just wanting it all to be over. Everything had gone on for too long, and he was over it, done.
Waiting was the worst part, and all he had been doing for months now was waiting.
He could hear her slow, steady footsteps before she appeared in the doorway.
“Hello, nephew,” she crooned, meandering inside until she was standing only a few feet in front of him.
“Where’s Aelin?” he asked, although his swollen lips had trouble moving.
“Does it matter?” Maeve asked, shrugging. “Wouldn’t stop crying, though. Had to muffle those sobs before I went insane.”
She cocked her head, her eyes glowing.
She had gone insane long ago.
“She goes home.”
Maeve watched him for a moment in silence before a humorless laugh shook her petite frame. “Are you bargaining with me?”
“Let her go home,” Rowan repeated. “Her, and the baby. Let them go home, safely, and I’ll do whatever you want without a fight.”
The room fell into silence, Rowan’s declaration, his promise, echoing in the minimal space.
“I’m beginning to think you’re delusional,” Maeve said, slowly.
“Aelin,” he repeated, a growl underlying his tone. “Gets to go, unharmed.”
“You’ve repeated that, over and over again,” Maeve said, her pretentious grin disappearing. “It’s growing old.”
“Then agree,” Rowan snapped.
“You see, this is where you’re mistaken,” Maeve began, pacing back and forth in front of him. “You’re not in the place to make a bargain. Either way, you die, and Aelin’s safety means nothing to me.”
“Surely you don’t hate me that much,” Rowan said, meeting her gaze. “Let Aelin go free. Please.”
Please. He was sincere when he said it, a word he had never used sincerely with his aunt before. If he wasn’t tied up to a chair, he would be down on his knees, begging, pleading.
Maeve watched him for a long moment, the room going back into silence. Rowan could hear her men walking around downstairs, their boots heavy on the wooden floorboards.
With every step he heard, his heart beat a little faster.
“Maeve,” he growled, when the silence became too unbearable.
Her eyes darkened as her lips twisted into a cruel smile. “Aelin has already been….released.”
There were a lot of different words Maeve could have chosen, but released was one that confused Rowan, pissed him off.
It was a word that could mean so many different things, but every meaning Rowan thought of only made him feel sick to his stomach.
His jaw locked. “Where is she?”
Ps. i kind of suck at time frames, so it’s ‘roughly’ ahahaha
510…ish…
Lucius and Hugh sat tall and proud atop their stallion’s, and the small thing blocking their road had to crane his neck to reach their full heights. He thought them to be out of this world, Gods he could not quiet reach.
“Boy move before you are trampled” the dark haired one barked, he knew him to be Sieur only and could not find the words for his response. He was almost starstruck
“Are you deaf” the other copper one growled, slightly huffing "or stupid”. He eyed the thing with disgust ridden on his face, and encouraged his horse to step closer to the boy with a small kick “Perhaps you wish to be trampled on” he growled
“LUCIUS!” Hugh berated his temperamental brother “do not dare, you are not in Rome any longer” his voice had shot out half as a command, and half in jest.
Lucius smirked over his shoulder “You are right brother, if we were in Rome he would have no head” the boy skated back on his heels, hoping to avoid certain death
“I was here first” his brows furrowed as he looked down kicking a stone out of the path
Lucius had been circling the boy on his horse as if to torment him, though this comment stopped him in his tracks and he shot down from his horse grabbing the child by the shoulders “what did you say” his jaw was clenched, teeth rattling under the pressure and he knelt down to the boys level
“i-“ he stuttered, then regained his composure looking him square in the face “I was here first. You interrupted my path. I was getting wood an-“
His story had been cut off when he felt leather connect to his rear, and he yelped in shock “you best learn manners boy or ill beat them into you” Lucius rose from his couched position, and when the boy looked up he fell back onto his now saw bottom
“Lucius, stop toying with the child and get a move on” Hugh knew better then to interrupt his little brother when he had prey in his sights and wished that he would just hurry up and either kill it or leave it. He wanted to drink the day away, not spend it in the forest.
“what is your name boy” the last word came out as almost a threat, though it was not usually formed in that way
The boys self-preservation had been launched out of the window some years ago and he did not take kindly to men whom used their influence to belittle others. He had not yet been a mature age, but he would not be pushed around by them “what is your name, Sieur” he tried with might to spit the last word out as venomous as the devil in front of him had, and in a decades to come he would manage. Not today, though.
Hugh sucked in the air around him, bracing himself for the impact he would not feel himself. He winced when he saw Lucius draw his hand back and deliver a harsh slap to the boys bum, and had closed his eyes by the time Lucius reached 10.
He was sniffling, though not crying. Not even his own father had punished him so hard, and he had caused far greater mischief at home then he had thar day.
Lucius grabbed his skinny arm and threw him on his horse, and the boy lay on his stomach over the saddle “Next time boy tell me your name” he growled, and aimed back towards the village to return it to which way it came from.
 520…ish…
Lucius’ sword scraped along the ground and the stone bit out an ear piercing screech at the contact “Matthaeus, keep slipping the wood from your shoulders and I will tan your rear” he smirked “no matter how you’ve aged”
Matthews shoulder ached from the constant, unrelenting work he had been subjected to for the past three months. The De Clermonts had demanded requested another part to their stone tower, and his craftsmanship had been sought after. He welcomed the work, and begrudged the barbarian whom had been overseeing the build.
Matthew huffed, disgruntled at the sheer lack of decency by this muck-spouted, quisby fopdoodle. Matthew used every derogatory word in his capability to describe Lucius, and he chuckled thinking of the wonderous foul language
“You jest, please share” Lucius growled, becoming impatient with the runt
“You wish to distract me from my important work, Sieur” He smirked back, using his free hand to wipe a stray bead of sweat “your father will not be pleased”
“speak less of my father and more of what thoughts ensued such joyous laughter” his arms stretched out to emphasize his speech as his voice became mocking
Hugh looked over nervously and had secured his blade within it’s sheath knowing within all of three minutes be would referee his brother and the human. They had yet to come to physical blows, and Hugh knew it would occur soon and hoped his home would be built before his brother murdered the towns best stonemason.
“I cannot speak such thoughts as they bare ill towards my Sieur, and I fear he may redden my ass” he quipped back, tipping his chin higher “perhaps though he looks for an excuse to darken my rear” he chuckled, and the men around let a small laughter escape
Lucius face fell at the insinuation and Hughs eye’s popped out of his skull. His brother was known in every city for being a woman loving, bed hopping whore and this suggestiveness would anger him.
Lucius took slow, purposeful steps toward in the impotent swine and the light of day shuddered in response “What did you say” he growled
Matthew, having been one of two men who dared challenge Lucius (the other only being Sieur Philippe) dropped the wood he was holding and met the man in the middle of the stoned courtyard “I said, perhaps you endeavour to redden my ass as an excuse to see it in all its glory” he bit out. He had grown to an impossible human height, and now matched the vampire in length. Where he did lack though, was the brawn the Roman possessed.
Lucius thought better of satisfying the runt with a reply, and simply patted him on the shoulder. He leant in to whisper to him “you will learn to regret that, boy”
Everyone had been shocked at the calm, collectiveness of Sieur Lucius that day and thought he may have changed.
He had not.
 Three weeks later
It had been a difficult few weeks, and his work never seemed to end. The days had gotten longer and the work excruciating. One solace had been his unrelenting ruler Lucius had not made much comment since the day some weeks ago. He had kept out of Matthews way, and managed to be as polite as he could. That was unsettling.
Matthew made the short walk to his home, dreaming of his awaiting cot and he could practically smell the stew wafting through the streets awaiting for him to return home.
His ears picked up an odd sound coming through his stone walls, and tentatively stepped inside his home. He had almost vomited at the unsightly thing he had been subjected to; his loving, wonderful mother whom he doted on had been ontop of their dining table being entertained by the devil.
He had seen enough; the copper haired bastard had sarded with his mother.
His slammed the door with an ominous thunk, and sank down on the stone wall out of earshot. He would have stern words with his mother, and a sharp knife for him.
The door creaked open and Lucius had looked proud of himself. He thought he had done a good deed, the woman was widowed and short of this months tax payments. Her sons efforts to keep a roof over their heads had been noticed but he felt entitled to ensure she made up the rest of the payments. The added bonus being her impertinent son had seen, and he could not doubt his intentions again.
He made good measure to ensure Matthew had seen him jostling his trousers and tucking in his unruly clothing before approaching him on the stone wall. Matthew rose from his seat, his face riddled with hatred “You utter bastard” his sent a dissatisfying week shove to him, and this ensued hysterics from the blood sucker
He grinned “I was collecting your taxes” he could not manage any anger, he had released his frustrations on the boys mother (and she had accepted them happily and satisfied) “Do not fear boy, you will not have to call me father” he tipped his head back roaring with laughter as he retreated.
As he had gotten further away, Matthew had hoped staring a hole through his head would result in him dying.
It did not.
530…ish?...
Ysabaeu had almost looked sad at the sorrowful state lying crumpled on the floor. Matthew, the bright boy from the village laid broken on the cobbles. She had sensed his bones were no longer in tact and knew if she did not act quick, the world would lose a bright spark.
Lucius grumbled loudly looking at his stepmother whom had a doe-eyed expression. She was about to make it her child. “Perhaps he will be fine” he tried to reason, and gave his leg a quick tap for good measure “see, hardly broken”
Ysabaeu growled, stepping over the broken body to his side “if you do not wish to be in the same sorrowful state, I suggest you leave”
“Now, there is no such need for dramatics” Philippes voice boomed unnecessarily loud and the world almost stood still everytime he spoke “Come Lucius, leave Ysabaeu to her own devices”
He looked to the pitiful sight on the floor and shrugged “all over a woman” he spat “pathetic”. Lucius could not fathom a love so deep a man would fling himself from a bell tower and thought him week to do so. Perhaps he could sympathise the loss of a child, but he could not care for it. He sneered, and left awaiting the arrival of his pitiful new brother.
 Matthews transformation had been far from easy, and with his sickened blood Lucius had found new reason to hate him. He had known Ysabeaus was tainted, but he had to feign a care for her since she was mated to his father. This thing he did not care to like.
He saw an opportunity now Matthew had turned and took great satisfaction in knowing the next time they shared words he could beat him in every way he had dreamed of. No longer a frail human, he would choke him till his heart exploded with joy.
He had been known for a shortened temper, but it was something about this oozing sack of self-pitying puss that truly angered him. As a boy he was self-entitled, in puberty he was utterly impudent and in adulthood he has acted like a degenerate. If it were not for his skills in building, his head would be nicely mounted to a stick in Lucius room.
As the days drew to a close, Ysabaeu proudly presented her son to her family. The celebratory dinner saw him welcomed, though it truly was just an opportunity for Philippe to be centre of everyone’s attention.
Matthew had not liked the crowded feel and had been grateful for his now ‘step-father’ taking up the role of entertainer, host and joker. His mind still burned from the memory of his wife and child and his heart bled in pain thinking of his loss. How he could go on, why he had agreed to go on wounded his thoughts as he betrayed his love and his God.
His eyes met Lucius across the dining table, his own dark orbs to his golden, fiery ones. He could feel the hate burn his veins, and did not once avert his gaze as he would have done as a human.
“Lucius” Philippes melodic voice broke the trance “Come, lets walk our grounds” His arm swung over the shoulder of his favourite son and goaded him into leaving the table
The sweltering, humid air had reflected the conversation at hand hot and stifling. Atleast, that is how Lucius felt “Come now Son, I trust no other with this” Philippe tried to reason. His most trusted, favoured son had a wicked temper but he could not place this into the hands of another.
“I do not understand, why of everyone you burden me with such a task” he growled, though it were more of a petulant child grumble then of a genuine challenging nature
“Ysabaeu’s sickened bloodline cannot be uncovered, nor Matthews affliction. I need you to be his guardian. To ensure he is kept in check” Phillipe tightened the grip on his shoulder and sighed deeply “Please”
He was not one for begging, but his relationship with this boy had been different. In some respects, despite the age gap he saw Lucius as his equal, someone he could admire for his sharp mind. He thought paces ahead of anyone around and even sometimes himself.
Lucius regarded this request, and thought of no other way to make this tolerable “if you expect I take Matthew as my charge, expect I shall not refrain from relentlessly making his life a misery, and beating him” he folded his arms across his broad chest and stood in front of his father holding the upper ground “and so help me God, if he ever does something to jeopardise the family, I will put him down”
Philippe nodded, knowing better to argue once he had set his mind “do try to atleast be friendly with him”
“I attempted so once, I allowed his mother to slip on taxes” he tipped his chin upward patronisingly “he was ungrateful”
Philippe gave his boy a stern look “Sarding his mother is not attempting to be friendly. It is antagonising”
“How does the corpse of his dead wife fair?” He smirked maliciously as his father’s face fell
“You are a very sick boy, Lucius” he shook his head in disbelief. He had known this was said in jest, but the depths of his bleak imagination had been one of the few thigs still to surprise the ancient being.
“No father, Matthew is the sick one. I am perfectly well, perhaps you are losing your mind”.
The clip around the earlobe Lucius received from that comment could still be felt almost 2000 years later.
Part Two
Part Three
The Servant
—1—
Working at the manor was a surprise. The boy himself never imagined he would be taken seriously, specially regarding the job he was meant for; it felt almost like a joke, a silly trick to play the part. So, being hired as a butler for the feared head of the Shelby family was honest to God shocking and terrifying.
The wide windows and open corridors left him in awe as well as the beauty of the barn and the well-kept animals. It was known mister Shelby liked to ride early in the mornings or late past midnight under the deep pitch-black winter.
The first time the servant saw him, mr. Shelby came back to the manor, his steps maintained his powerful stance even when no one was around to see. Charlie’s nanny had been looking for him as the baby kept calling for the man after waking up and while technically being his job to find him, after all those past weeks, he had no idea where the man could possibly be.
Soon, he hurried to greet mr. Shelby by the doors with a sharp nod.
“Charlie has asked for you, mr. Shelby.” The man merely looked with a glint of recognition before storming to find his son.
Later on, he seemed to find little flashes of the head of the house.
Some of them were good. Some of them not so much.
—2—
Hearing the man argue with his aunt was nothing new and still impressive. As he worked in the house, talked to the remain help around it, the cook and the nanny; they all said mr. Shelby was a kept man, stoic and impassive. With a piercing stare that imitated the freezing winter he much so seemed to loathe.
Some said his glacially sight would melt only in presence of his son. Charlie was the light of his eyes, a beacon in the stormy sea guiding him home the nights his memories sinked him deep and low. Mister Shelby may not hear the resonance of the picks and shovels anymore but still saw them in his sleep.
The always compose man had a frown on his face, his lips on a thin line only sharing his distaste for the conversation and stating a couple of orders to the other side of the phone, Thomas Shelby hang up with a soundless huff and placed his hand near his eyebrow to ease the increasing nagging pain growing at the back of his head.
They never got any peace. No one of his family ever got peace.
The servant moved seamlessly in the room, took the empty glasses and spared a glance at the half full liquor sitting the the bottle by the table at the other side.
“Your glasses, mister Shelby,” Having the absolute attention of a man such as Shelby was unnerving, nerve-wracking and worrying and at the same time, heated adrenaline and embarrassment made their way to the boy’s cheeks. A young face taintless of horror and despair.
He left the glasses for the man to hold on top of his desk and took his leave.
Mister Shelby often forgot the use of his reading glasses as he called them, and soon started to orchestrated a massive migraine that left him moody for hours.
The servant shortly after discovered keeping a spare of glasses in the office would do magic for him and mostly salvaged whatever was left of his eye-sight. That man surely liked to be left alone in the dark.
Mr. Shelby accepted the pair of glasses in silent and soon after, lighted up a new cigarette.
“Dinner will be served promptly, sir.” The boy assured his master even knowingly of being ignored, all those years, he have seen the man work, climb, celebrate, scream and even fuck passing walks of beautiful women, but barely were able to make him eat anything. Not even with his son besides him. He had used the pretense of Charlie when the boy was feeling lonely and missed both father and mother; only then mister Shelby seemed to reach for his boy and comfort him.
But for that night it didn’t feel like that strategy would work.
“I won’t be there.” Thomas let him know. “However, you are all free to dine outside the kitchen.” The surprise was cleared in the boy’s eyes, it was such an honor to eat at the table of the family and doing so without the head of said family felt wrong. The young one was about to deny his orders when a piercing cold stared advised him otherwise. “You may tell the others.”
“Yes, mister Shelby.”
Dinning at the large table was surreal. The nanny, the cook, one of the maids and him were sitting in display, all surrounding little Charlie who talked and ate happily commenting on how good the supper was for the day. The growing Shelby told stories about his horse, his ridding lessons and even his violin recital that was yet to come. Charlie wished he could invited them all.
He smiled warmly at the boy sharing the overwhelming sense of care as the other servants of the house, they all loved Charlie.
“You will be wonderful, Charlie.” The nanny mentioned.
“And you can always play for us if you want.” Commented the cook with short courage.
“We will always listen.” He said and retreated after dinner.
Hours late into midnight, the servant was wandering around from the kitchen, the halls were lonely and quiet, candles around created shadows that guide him and about to head to bed he was when he first heard it.
Low, quiet, meek whispering, hushed breaths and silent prayers came from the office. A rush of fear traveled down his spine, fear of someone being inside the house, but shortly after unlocking the door he realized it was only mister Shelby.
The man was resting on the sofa, his coat was hanged on his side and his shoes were neatly placed far from it. Mister Shelby’s features were obscured with memories and ghosts, sweat formed on his forehead as his arms flexed in anger. The boy knelt on the carpet and touched the man heated skin trying to wake him up.
The response was almost immediately. Muster Shelby rose up in a second, smoothly reached under his arm and pointed a gun at the servants head.
The distinguished click of the safe being taken off fired up his heart, the boy could hear it running wild in his ears but he stood tall and still, no sign of breathing until Mister Shelby’s gaze focused on him.
A pair of glazing blue, cold and piercing dilated pupils engraved with long soft looking lashes. Looked down on him leaving him frozen on the spot. Mister Shelby didn’t seem to even blink, placing his eyes on the boy, searching for answers to questions in a wicked curiosity; the man knew what the others thought of him, some feared him, some loved him —and he was strictly thinking about him family and having doubts—, and some other definitely hated him, loathed him and despised him. Even himself, in the deeps of night he would wake up with the sinking feeling of abhor for his persona.
But at that time, pointing a gun at one of his servants who still looked at his eyes and not the machine capable of killing them, Thomas felt curious for the boy. Shelby released the safe into its rightful place albeit never taking the gun down.
“What are you doing here?” The boy gradually started to retreat his hands and left them resting on his thighs.
“You were speaking, sir. Talking in your sleep.” A pregnant silence followed that statement and the younger one feared first time while staying in the manor that he would be hurt in any way. Thomas nodded to himself and lower the gun brushing it slightly to the boy’s face. An innocent touch on his nose to finally rest on his parted lips. The cold feeling of the metal combined with the fleeting smell of powder stirred something within the servant’s blood making him blushed in a fading shade of red.
All under the watchful eye of the crime Lord.
A lick of something wickedly dark sparkled his brain to force the boy near the gun one last time by roughly grasping at the back of his head.
“Do you want to die, Little one?” The warmth pouring from the man’s voice was numbing enough to leave his throat dry.
“No, sir.” The servant was unable to free himself, not out of absolute fear. He knew who Shelby was, he knew who his boss was, he also knew all the stories about the Peaky Blinders, so, no. He didn’t fear his boss out of his reputation. He feared being disrespectful at any capacity and not being good enough to the man’s eyes.
“Alright.” At last, Tom left him go although the boy didn’t move. He had a feeling mister Shelby wasn’t doing alright, then again, nobody not eating and not sleeping would be ok in any circumstances. So instead of leaving his boss alone, he stayed. Silently asking for the gun with both palms bare.
Thomas interest was peaked as he pleased the boy silent request and slowly after was surprised by the skilled hands that disarmed every bullet smoothly and placed them at Thomas’s feet.
“How do you know how to use it?” Shelby spoke rough and easy aching to have a cigarette on his lips. The boy stood with care and wobbly legs, went to man’s desk and searched for the item his master needed. Mr. Shelby rose up an eyebrow but either way accepted the cigar and the warmth that followed.
“My Father.” He simply stated. It was no mystery the tells of war and how many families had been torn apart from it. He, himself was about to be shipped away from his crying mother when news broke and thousands of soldiers were send back. He had been a tad too young to be part of it, but was old enough to recognize the signs and tells from it. He could never know what horrors had mister Shelby seen on those lands and he could only imagine. So he told him much.
“It’s better that you’ll never know.” Thomas groaned as the smoke blurred his face to the boy’s eyes and led him to bed. “Good night, little one.” With an unfamiliar sweetness Tommy left a heavy hand rest on the boy’s soft hair with a brush of warmth forgotten by the time he sat back on his desk.
“Good night, mister Shelby.” After months of work and sunny days, the servant felt courage to shyly smile at the man before disappearing behind the door.
“I don’t know about you but it feels so freeing to be out here like this,” you commented with a skip to your step, Youngjae casting an exasperated look in your direction as he hobbled along with a cane to support him.
“Oh yes, how very wonderful when there’s not a soldier in sight to protect us.”
“Precisely!” You spun around and then grinned at Youngjae. “We could even run away together now.”
“What about Jinyoung? Don’t you worry about his heartache?”
You grinned. “He’ll find me. He did after all these years.”
“You’re foolish to think the Gods above would give you another chance if you threw away everything now.”
“I know, don’t worry I’m joking. Being completely free right now is all a pipe dream. Especially since we’re not without a warrior either.”
“Please don’t go saying because you’ve played with some weapons that you can now protect us-” Angling Youngjae to the tree line, you pointed out the shadow that you had noticed following along twenty minutes prior. “Oh. Not you then.”
“Still, I have my dagger so if anyone tries anything in the village, mark my words, I’ll stab them with it! Fear not, Youngjae!”
“I still don’t feel comfortable with you, but knowing we have Jackson following us puts me completely at ease.”
“Why, because I’m a woman?!”
“No, because you’re used to stabbing trees and stuffed bags, not humans.”
“Come a little closer and I’ll stab you instead!” you grumbled, folding your arms across your chest.
Youngjae chuckled heartily then and with the look in his eye, you called it a truce.
You were grateful for Jinyoung letting you leave the base. You hadn’t thought he would allow you out of his sights ever again, not that you would blame him for being like that. Whilst you craved the world being brighter and fuller than it was within that mountainside, you knew you couldn’t cope without seeing Jinyoung for long either.
Half the reason you were moving so fast, you realised, was so you could get back to him before dark.
Still, it was nice to head out with Youngjae. You liked him a great deal and could tell you complimented one another as friends. You were excited that he was coming along with you on your escape to Nowhere, and were determined to protect him at all costs.
You weren’t joking when you said you would stab anyone who threatened his safety.
It was nice to be doing something outside of the forest boundary line though. If you could pull off this trip to town with Youngjae, then surely you would be up for more in the future. You were hopeful that once settled in your new place together that you and Youngjae could journey to gather supplies more often, and Jackson could do so at your sides, not lurking within the shadows as he had so far.
The trip to the village took most of the morning, and after grabbing the order and a meal at the inn, you headed back in the direction you had ventured from. It was an hour into your journey home when you were startled to find Jackson running out from under the cover of the trees towards you both, throwing Youngjae over his shoulder and grabbing onto your hand. Diving behind a derelict building and the verge of a tree line, Jackson signalled for you all to be silent as he peered out from behind the wall at whatever it was that threatened your travels.
“Must we-”
He silenced your hushed question and continued to look out towards the road. It was then that you heard thundering hooves, and with a glance around Jackson, you saw the flag of the Rebellion held within a couple of the riders’ hands.
They were another battalion. Pressing yourself against the wall as flashes of the day you were kidnapped plagued you, you weren’t even aware they had fully passed by until Jackson was shaking you out of your reverie.
“Y/N, we must hurry now!”
“Why did Jinyoung let me go out if he knew there could be a battalion on the…” You trailed off then, your thoughts racing as your eyes peeled in the direction of the camp. You started to run, panic coursing throughout you.
Jackson caught up with you and pulled you back to his side. “He’ll be okay; it was you he was protecting in the first place.”
“He sent me out because he knew they were coming?”
“We had a spy tell of our plans to leave the Rebellion. Jinyoung knew Argo and his hunting team would come to interrogate. If he found you there then-”
“Then?”
“It doesn’t matter. Let’s just hurry back to safety. Youngjae, come on!”
“Do you know who the spy is?” you asked once Youngjae was at your side and Jackson shrugged. “Well, surely you have suspicions?”
“The ones in the radio tower,” Jackson offered and Youngjae gasped noisily.
“BamBam and Yugyeom?! Surely not. They’re boisterous but good kids.”
“BamBam was the last to be transferred to our base. He’s always been a bit on edge. He’s the perfect suspect to me.”
“Maybe he has a reason. He doesn’t seem like someone who would do it just to have fun.”
Jackson sighed. “Either way, he broke Jinyoung’s trust and he’s not one to be all that forgiving about it.”
“Then we must hurry to-”
“To?” Youngjae repeated at your sudden stillness, reaching out for your hand. “Y/N?”
“They’re coming back,” you murmured, hearing hooves once more.
Darting to glance over your shoulder, you were confused when you didn’t see the horses on the path behind you.
“It’s an ambush. They knew something was up, after all,” Jackson murmured, kicking himself into gear again. “Come on into the trees, the horses will find it harder within here.”
“We can’t expect Youngjae to rush! Jackson, this won’t work.”
“Go on without me,” the latter urged and you shook your head, latching onto his arm and helping him through the bramble and roots.
“I won’t leave you!”
“Nor will I. We’ll stay together,” Jackson announced, eyes peeled towards the road.
It was tough going getting deeper into the woods and yet, it seemed to help you disappear from the army searching for you. Jackson made you hide when it was needed, and then efficiently assisted you both over the overgrown territory.
You could tell this terrain was tiring Youngjae. “I don’t know how much more I can handle.”
“We need to get to safety, Youngjae.”
“You need to, not me. I’m meant to be dead anyway.”
Jackson grunted. “No one’s dying today.”
“Besides, I’m also meant to be rid of this world and here I am. Come on, Youngjae, lean on me.”
For some time, you managed to travel without any intrusion. Being this deep into the forest meant you had no idea if you were travelling the right way, and the lack of lighting made it harder for you to rely on your compass. You were certain you had made it away from your attackers when you neared a road that separated the density of the trees. It was quiet, and Jackson nodded once.
“Follow after me,” he instructed lowly, cautiously stepping out onto the road. You followed, holding Youngjae’s arm in yours.
It wasn’t until you were in the middle of the road when you realised just how deadly this was about to become. The swoosh of an arrow hurtled passed your ear and you pushed Youngjae behind you, trying to find your dagger amidst the open fire. However, Jackson’s scream startled you, your eyes widening as you watch him fall to the ground.
“Well, looky here. I found a wandering shadow. And what’s this he brings into my pathway? It wouldn’t be what that silly cat thinks he could hide from me, now would it? Catch them, boys.”
“Run, Y/N,” Youngjae said with a shove but you didn’t budge, unable to uproot yourself from his side.
You weren’t cut out for this world after all. In the face of danger, your mind blanked and you couldn’t protect either of the men you had grown fond of. You weren’t prepared for anything. Much like the daze you had been in when the fires began to burn all around you in your last home, you were far too easy to catch and incapable of helping Jackson spluttering on the ground behind you as the rough men captured you and threw you on their cart alongside Youngjae.
Gripping at your compass, you closed your eyes and willed your voice to make it to Jinyoung.
He was your only hope now.
Tumblr media
The shock drove you into a dreamless slumber, in which you woke from when you were roughly tossed into some sort of holding cell. Youngjae landed with a cry beside you and you crawled over to his side, trying to check him over.
“How dare you hurt him, you monster!” you cried and the men merely laughed in good humour at your feeble statement.
“Did you hear that Tatum, we’re monsters.”
“Monsters seem to roam these lands a lot. Silly girl doesn’t know her place.”
“Rather be a monster than a prisoner, I’d say.”
“Don’t bother with them, Y/N. They are too rotten in the mind to care,” Youngjae breathed, trying to straighten up.
Your tears were falling freely. “I’m sorry.”
“What for?”
“I didn’t do what I was trained to do by Jinyoung and-”
“There was no way you could have helped either of us in that situation. Maybe if you ran you would outdo them, but chances are, they would have caught you. It was what they set out to do in the first place.”
“We should have never left the camp.”
“It would have been a bloodbath if we hadn’t.”
You heaved out a shaky breath. “It could have still been.”
“Jinyoung is the cat he referred to. That man thinks he’s outwitted Jinyoung in some way. If Jackson is alive, he’ll alert Jinyoung, don’t you worry.”
“That’s what worries me. Jinyoung’s reflexes will react impulsively and we’ll all end up dead before we can escape this hell. We need to try and do something ourselves. If we can meet him in the middle, then maybe we have a better chance of getting away.”
“How? We’re locked up.”
“Not without back up,” you mentioned quietly, hiking your pant leg up just enough to show the hilt of your dagger. Youngjae grinned, reaching to smooth the fabric back down to conceal your weapon.
“What should we do next?”
Tumblr media
“Do you ever wonder what you would do in the face of danger?”
Glancing at the older woman across the room, you sighed. “I’m not sure.”
“You should have a plan, my dear.”
“Why? Those with power will always stamp out the weak.”
“Are you saying you’re weak?” she wondered, coming over with a tray of cut fruit. She set it down on the table and then smiled warmly at you. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for.”
“Maybe, but I don’t feel like I could fight.”
“If it meant your parents could come back?” she suggested and you blinked back the instant rise in emotions. “Or that boy, the one who owns your heart. If it was for them?”
“I wouldn’t hesitate to throw myself in harm’s way.”
“We should always prepare for the worst, and live for the best, my dear.”
“Hasn’t the worst already happened for me? I’m without them all.”
“You still hold onto your life, and that is most precious.”
“Some days…” you started, sighing heavily at her reproachful stare. “Grandmother, I really don’t get the lesson you are trying to teach me right now.”
“It’s okay not to have the answers in the beginning. It’s okay to feel hopeless. But I hope with time in your situation, you will know what your best move will be.”
Thinking of Jinyoung and how he always looked over his shoulder for what-ifs, you shook your head. “I can’t keep thinking like this. If something bad comes my way, then fate can decide if I’m worthy or not.”
“Why should you put such a burden on poor fate like that?!” she chastised, holding out a piece of pear to you. “Use your surroundings to your advantage. Think of what must be done to reach out and hold onto your loved ones again. One day you might be on your own without me in this world, and I need to know you will continue to fight even then.”
“What would I do in the face of danger?” you mused, taking a bite of the pear distractedly.
If it meant seeing your loved ones one last time, you hoped you would give it your all.
Anxious Beauty part 2
word count: 2566
warning: play fighting
the years passed and the three fairies raised Prince Virgil, who they affectionately nicknamed storm cloud, or just cloud for short, in an unassuming cottage in the nearby forest.
Now that the Prince was four, on cool nights like tonight, they left the tots bedroom window open to allow the sweet smell of the peach trees that grew outside to flow inside.
Logan's faithful raven companion croft, landed on a branch outside the open window. When his master had no use of him. Croft often found himself observing the object Logan seemed so fascinated by. But tonight he had a mission to finish. The bird hopped to the windowsill and peered inside.
Cloud rolled over in his crib and blinked his eyes open, hearing the creaking nearby. When he saw his bird friend he shaking stood on his bed and reached for him. But croft flew inside, in a loop, dropping what he carried in his beak before flying out the window and away.
Cloud looked down and saw what the bird had left. A dark old fashion key. In the handle was a purple jewel in the shape of a heart.
The next morning when Patton saw Virgil with the key, he was puzzled. He didn't recall the king giving it to his son when they departed, the others also denied giving it to the Prince. Patton reached to take it away, but once he did, the toddler let out a loud wail. Patton quickly gave it back. " okay, you can keep it." Since that day, cloud always had the key with him or else he was very upset. As he grew up he played in the woods like any child. For a time, the curse was forgotten.
"okay Roman that's all for tonight, it's getting late kiddo."
He took the bowl from the Prince and set it in the sink, he would wash it in the morning. "You can't stop there padre, I haven't even burst onto the scene yet."
"He can continue the story tomorrow Roman, we're filming with Thomas tomorrow remember? We each need to be rested for our performance, we don't need you yawning while the cameras on." Logan chided as he walked up to his room.
The next day every could see how impatient Roman was being, he groaned any time anyone messed up their lines, which made Virgil start messing up on purpose.
That night at dinner Roman are twice as fast as usual when Patton placed the dishes in the sink Logan sighed as said " I can clean up tonight Patton." Roman smiled and practically yanked Patton out of the kitchen "thanks teach!" He called.
Roman sat cross legged as Patton stood before him.
"Alright let me remember where we were..."
Twelve years passed and cloud grew into a fine young man. That morning the three seemed to be trying to get him out of the house. " why don't you go play outside, maybe go for a swim? It's a lovely warm day out." Patton encouraged. Cloud nodded as he slipped on his gray vest over his white long sleeve shirt. Leaving the top button undone. Cloud opened the Dutch door of the cottage and waved goodbye to the three. " have fun. Don't go too far, but don't come back too quickly.." The three called out over each other. Cloud stood his head as he walked off. He could tell when they were trying to hide something. And the lad was always kind enough to play along with their surprises.
The forest was empty today, only filled with the sounds of the forest animals, it was alright, Virgil had perfected how to entertain himself.
Cloud walked between trees swinging himself forward to grab the next trunk. Walking across a fallen tree with his arms out to steady himself. He unlocked his boots and walked through the river, he scooped up a smooth stone and tossed it, the rock skipping thrice before sinking to the bottom. He picked up a stick and swung it around, pretending to fight an invisible foe. His parents often were over cautious when it came to raising him, not letting him eat fruit right off the tree near his home, though he sneaked berries from bushes when he was in the woods. Only remus let him get away with things the others found dangerous, like fighting. " come on you two! He's gonna have to learn to fight eventually if he's going to be king." Remus whispered one afternoon. So they relented and let Virgil have supervised battles with remus.
Not paying attention as he swung his stick-sword, cloud had begun to sing.
" I heard there was a secret chord, that David played and it pleased the Lord, but you don't really care for music do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift, the baffled king composing hallelujah"
Prince Roman and his hunting party were riding back after an uneventful morning, he could tell his mare rose was thirsty having not been watered since they left so he told the rest to go on without him as he slowly rode into the woods. The canopy from the treetops immediately cooled Roman from the sun. Once his eyes adjusted he led rose to the small pond they often visited when he first got her.
As she drank Roman sat on a stone to rest himself, he refilled his canteen and took a sip when he heard a noise. He shot up, hand on his sheathed sword just in case of danger. After listening he realized the sound was singing. Even from this distance Roman was spellbound. He had never heard a sweeter tenor in his life.
" hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
he took hold of his horses bridle and walked towards the noise of the voice. He found boy alone through the trees in the clearing. He held a stick and looked like he was fencing something Roman could not see. Roman smirked and found his own falls. Branch, not wanting to scare the boy away by using his real sword.
(Vpov)
Suddenly someone burst out of the trees and stood three feet away. He called to challenge him. Usually cloud would run from the stranger but seeing that he also wielded a stick let him know he was also playing.
The two slowly circled each other, Virgil tried to remember Remus's lecture on strategies but he almost always tangent off into talking about wounds. So he decided to try and copy the man. When he advanced, Virgil tried to stay swords distance away. When He swung Virgil brought his up and they hit with a deafening whack. Virgil did the same but his opponent ducked before it could make contact. More jabs were taken and all too soon cloud was backed against a tree with the "sword" to his throat.
" Not much for training, but a decent fight anyhow." He said as he tossed his stick to the side.
" well, my um, parents don't like me fighting a lot. They're worried I could get hurt." Cloud mumbled.
Roman waved him off " nonsense. Every man should learn the art of dueling, if the need arose to save a bachelor or damsel in distress." He said proudly.
" ill make note of that."
" how rude of me. My name is Roman." He said as he brushed back his red cape.
Virgil mildly panicked at what to do. He wasn't sure if it was right to tell his name to a stranger.
" you can call me cloud. It's what my parents call me."
" intriguing." A high shinny made Virgil flinch. Roman saw his fear and placed a hand on his shoulder. " fear not. That is just rose. I almost forgot I left her in the brushes." He whistled with two gloved fingers in his mouth and suddenly a white mare with a rose gold mane leapt through the opening and trotted to her owners side. " this is my rose. The best and most beautiful mare in the entire kingdom, in my humble opinion."
"Very humble.." Cloud teased. Roman rolled his eyes. " would you like to go for a ride?" He said, holding his hand out. Cloud glanced around wondering what Patton would say if he were here. He had never ridden a horse before. " I guess so." Roman quickly mounted then reached down to help cloud onto the space behind him. " I'm not gonna fall am I?"
" just hold onto me. Ill keep you safe."
First they walked down the path, Roman making sure Virgil was feeling secure before he clicked at the horse who sped up galloping throughout the trees. Roman laughed as clouds grip around his waist tightened. She slowed to a stop at the edge of the forest in a clearing. They both dismounted and cloud wrapped his arms around him. " I suppose ill think twice about riding a strangers horse." Roman laughed again. They walked a ways until they reached a spot cloud knew well. A tree had fallen years ago but continued to grew horizontally, making the perfect sitting spot. They rested as they watched their surroundings.
" ave you ever watched the sunrise from here cloud? That is truly a magical experience."
" no, but I have a fair view from my home. We can see the village and the castle well."
Roman hopped down and tugged cloud along with him. " what are we doing now?"
" since your fighting skills are pretty dismal, I assume you don't know how to dance either. So I'm going to teach you."
Cloud rolled his eyes but took Romans hand anyway. He pulled the young man close, their chests almost touching. Romans left hand rested around his side and clasped his right hand with his own. Suddenly they seemed to be sucked up into a whirlwind. Half the time, cloud tried to mirror Romans expert steps as they turned in time. The other half he couldn't stop staring into Romans eyes. Could this be what love felt like?
They continued twirling around the forest to their silent symphony until they were both out of breath. They slowed to a stop and their hands fell to their sides but still connected.
" you're quite light on your feet cloud. A plus to both dancing a dueling. But practice makes perfect."
Cloud was still in a daze that he couldn't come up with a snarky comment. " I need to return to my father in town. But may I visit you again, possibly tomorrow?"
Cloud shook himself free " of course. My cottage is close to the field where we met. You can meet my parents."
Roman bent and kissed both of his hands. " I will spend every moment missing you until then, my cloud."
Cloud watched as Roman mounted his horse, after opting out of a ride home, he still wasn't used to riding. And stood there until he disappeared into the trees.
Cloud returned home, he stopped at the door, hearing whispers and shushing from the other side. He wondered what his three guardians had been up to in his absence. He pushed open the Dutch doors calling to the quiet house.
" hey guys I'm home. I-" he paused as he closed the door. Something was different. Laying spread out on a chair was a very fancy looking outfit. It was a pair of black trousers, a purple vest and white shirt. Hanging behind it was a deep purple cape with black stitching around the borders.
Next to it was a small cake, he could tell it was BlackBerry- his favorite.
Cloud jumped back as the three fairies all yelled surprise from their place in the kitchen. They came forward to embrace the boy. Cloud had completely forgotten about his birthday. " what have you done?" He said happily appraising the material of the clothes. Certainly the fabric was not cheap.
" it's your sixteenth birthday and we knew we needed to do something extra special." Janus said.
Patton smiled sadly as he pulled out a second chair to have him sit. " Cloud- I mean Virgil, we also did all this because there's something we need to tell you."
Now he was concerned. They usually didn't call him Virgil unless it was very serious. " alright, what is it?"
" well kiddo, what I'm about to say may come as a surprise. It's not the kind of thing one hears every day, and I suppose we should have told you a bit sooner but we wanted..."
" YOU'RE A PRINCE!" Remus blurted out from behind them. The other two whipped their heads to glare at him.
" crashed that carriage, didn't we Remus?" Janus said
" blue was rambling. Better to just rip it off like a wound dressing!" Everyone including Virgil groaned at that imagery.
" wait, so I'm a Prince." He said as if testing the words on his lips.
" yes. You are the only son and heir of his majesty, king Thomas. I know this is all a lot to take in."
Virgil looked back to the outfit. It's grand appearance suddenly making sense. He shook his head laughing to himself " I wonder how he'll take that News"
"Wonder how who'll take that news?" The fairies all asked.
Virgil rubbed the back of his neck." Oh, well, a man happened through the forest where I was, I was practicing my fighting, but only with a stick. He jumps out of the bushes and wants to duel. But he was just playing" now Virgil was rambling trying to push his innocence.
"What else did you do?" Patton asked cautiously.
" He took me on a ride through the woods on his horse, we talked a lot. He also taught me to dance. We spun so much that I'm still a little dizzy" he said with a smile. " he's coming back tomorrow."
Patton recognized the look Virgil had. He had definitely fallen in love with him. Which would make this next part of the conversation harder.
" Virgil..Unfortunately we won't be here after today. We promised to we would bring you back to the castle tonight."
Virgil was upset. " are you sure we couldn't wait until tomorrow so I could explain to him. I'm sure he mind me being a Prince." Janus stepped forward " son, I'm afraid that's not possible. you see A part of being a Prince is that when you were born, you were also betrothed to another Prince from an allied kingdom, Prince-"
Now Virgil was mad " I don't care what his name is. How could anyone force or even expect anyone, let alone a Prince to marry someone they've never met!"
Remus lightly placed his hand on his arm " now cloud-"
Virgil shook him off. " no! You don't get to call me that anymore. You keep this information from me my whole life. Then expect me to be okay with this. I don't know the first thing about being a Prince. I don't want to go." Tears streamed down his cheeks as he fled from the room. Patton Janus and Remus stood around wondering what to do to help their Prince.
The Demon’s Bride (6)
Yikes, anyone else having trouble posting new posts on tumblr. When I went to write this up literally the only option I got was a text post. Did formatting change on the apps? *shrugs* oh well. Time for the next chapter.
So it’s been a long while since my last update. Work drags me down and I didn’t have the energy to commit to writing the ideas running through my head. (Look forward to more of my Drabble ficlets because of that.).
A couple weeks (?) ago I asked for a vote and I got 2 out of 2 for Demon’s Bride so here’s the next chapter. Enjoy.
Beginning Previous Next Masterpost
————————————
After Damian dropped Marinette off at the hotel she went inside and found a few of her classmates waiting in the lobby.
Nino was the first to see her. Standing up he called out, “Dude. Where have you been? We were so worried.”
Nino, Alix, Kim, and Max crowded around her as she entered.
“Sorry guys. My phone died on me,” holding up the dead phone for them to see, “so I couldn’t call for a ride or taxi. And I thought the hotel was reasonably close enough to walk. Forgot to account for Gotham’s Crime life though.” She added tapping her head with a closed fist to indicate the knucklehead move.
“You’re alright?” Nino asked.
Marinette hearing the unvoiced question nodded. “Fine. I had the criminal handled before the Bat and his brood showed up. Them actually getting there was what took so long.”
“Here Max,” Marinette said taking the glasses from her purse and handing them to the young man. “I also gave him some sugar cubes before and after our trip so don’t let him guilt you into believing I’m starving him either.”
“He tries it every time,” Max said replacing his frames with the pair Marinette handed him. A small ball of light briefly manifested before the small horse Kwamii hid in Max’s open bag.
“So what happened with Bustier after I left,” Marinette asked Nino as the group headed towards the elevator to take them to their rooms. Alix, Kim and Max fell back a step to follow behind the other two.
Nino pressed the call button before answering. “We told her you were still in the restroom before leaving the restaurant and again after boarding we told her you weren’t on. Markov even did a video recording of her reactions as well as a sweep of the bus to prove you weren’t on when we told her.”
Marinette raised an eyebrow. Ms. Bustier had ignored all that from her friends and left her behind anyways?
“She’s even worse here than at home.” Alix voiced what they were all thinking.
“Did you...?” Marinette trailed off.
“Report filled out, sent in and as of five minutes ago reviewed and filed by the Commandant. He’s waiting for a follow up from you.”
Alix and Marinette got off when the elevator stopped. The boys would go to the floor above where their rooms were. “Thanks guys. I’ll do my check in before going to sleep and let you guys know about any changes in the morning. Do we still have a free day?”
“We haven’t heard anything about it changing but Juleka sent a text a few minutes ago that she thinks something might come up for the fashion district based on what she’s heard so far?” Max said.
Marinette whined to herself, “She would choose something I like to try and spoil. Night guys.”
The doors closed on their calls while Marinette and Alix walked to their shared room and opened the door.
Marinette used the washroom to shower first since she had just been fighting an Akuma. While Alix was taking her turn, Marinette opened her now charged phone and started a video call.
“Bonjour Commandant,” she greeted when the call was answered and an older Chinese man appeared on the screen.
“Bonjour Marinette. The team and I expected your check in almost an hour ago and the others on the trip with you hadn’t heard anything.”
Marinette shrugged one shoulder. “My phones battery was already low and Voyage travel tends to be a coin toss on how it affects electronics. When I got back to the restaurant my phone was dead and I had to walk to the hotel.”
“And it took over an hour to get there?”
“Well no,” Marinette admitted. “I ran into one of Gotham’s criminals and had that handled easily,” she said before the Commandant interrupted, “but the Bat-clan showed up and... I ran into an old friend and we took a moment to catch up.”
“You ran into an old friend? After the Bats showed up? This friend wouldn’t happen to be a Bat would they?”
Marinette shrugged but smiled so that the man knew he got it right.
“And you won’t say anything because it could compromise identities.” The Commandant finished for her. “Alright, does it change any plans for this week?”
Marinette paused thoughtfully reviewing what would be happening that week. “I don’t think so. I know him but he doesn’t know about me being LadyBug.”
She smiled brightly, “actually I would love to keep that a secret for now and surprise him with it at the meeting. Oh! Can we get Viperion, Ryuko and Abeille to come to the meeting as well? We can get them to come across using Voyage so travel won’t be a problem.”
“Do they know this old friend?”
“Yes. Well, Viperion, Ryuko and Jiuweihu do.”
“Ah,” he said with understanding at the mention of the others who knew the friend and sighed. “How likely am I to have a revolt if I don’t somehow get this approved?”
Marinette smiled mischievously. “Oh very likely. Viperion will let you know from the start what he thinks about missing this chance but it will be Ryuko you will need to watch out for.”
The Commandant shook his head tiredly. He remembered the last time Ryuko had objected to something and the entire team had faced her wrath over it. “I will do what I can. As for the trip, I would like the team to stay together in pairs or as a small group on the class free days and with the class on the group days. There’s no need to push even your luck in Gotham with the way that the teacher is likely to neglect to take your safety into consideration.”
“Bien Sûr. We’ll be on our best behaviors,” she gave him a cheeky grin and saluted before ending the call.
“You know, if anyone had told me you were like this when we first met all those years ago I would have called them crazy,” Alix commented as she left the bathroom, towel drying her wet hair.
“That’s because you only knew Marinette. Mari is only for family and the team,” Marinette explained as she sat on her bed and pulled out her sketchbook.
Alix tossed the damp towel in the bathroom before pulling out a couple cookies and some carrots from the hotels mini fridge they had stocked that afternoon when they first arrived.
After placing them on the rooms small table two small Kwamii’s flew from their hiding places, one from Marinette’s purse and one from the suitcases in the corner where the girls kept their things.
“So what did the Commandant have to say,” Alix asked as she jumped onto her bed.
“He wants us to stay in the group as much as possible during the trip. Pairs at the very least. And he told me to stay out of trouble. Not in those exact words but the intent was clear.”
“Now why he would think that LadyBug would need orders to stay out of trouble is beyond me,” Alix joked.
Marinette glared at her before turning it on the Kwamii’s where they laughed on the table.
“No respect. I get no respect,” she mumbled humorously before turning the book to Alix. “What do you think?”
“It looks like a traffic light,” Alix observed the costume. “I’ve never seen you use that color combination together.”
“It’s the characteristic colors of the Robin uniform. I don’t know why they’ve chosen those colors but every Robin used them in some variation.” Marinette went back to sketching and adding tweaks to the costume.
“So Robin’s the childhood friend?” Alix asked.
Marinette froze.
She didn’t hear Alix call her name two more times. It wasn’t until a hand in her face had her reacting (and boy would she have to apologize for nearly dislocating Alex’s shoulder for her concern).
“Ouch,” Alix mumbled rubbing her arm. “You could have just said I need to keep it quiet,” she added as she stood up from the bed.
“Sorry Alix,” Marinette apologized.
“Nah, this’s my fault,” she gestured to her arm, “I know better than to startle you or the others on Alpha team. You okay?” She asked. “You kind of spaced out on me.”
“Yeah,” Marinette said. She laughed at Alix’s disbelieving look. She cuddled Tikki and Fluff who had come to her after finishing their foods. “I will be fine,” she corrected herself. “I’m just so used to keeping identities a secret and I’m not sure how Da... How my friend would feel if his identity was outed without his knowledge. We sort of have plans to see each other during the class free days so you’ll probably see him without the mask.”
“I can get that,” Alix said remembering when the team was in the dark about each other’s identities just a year ago. It had been an added stress on top of fighting for them to worry about protecting a secret with no end in sight. If given a choice she would definitely choose what they had today over what they’d had before. She mimed zipping her lips and locking it with an imaginary key that she threw over her shoulder.
“So he’s a hero too?”
Marinette shrugged. “I think so of course but most of the research I did before the trip indicated that the city and the heroes’ themselves mostly consider them to be vigilantes though.”
“Is there a difference?” Alix asked.
Shrugging, Marinette closed her notebook and turned off the light. “Isn’t it an “In the eyes of the beholder” kind of thing. A “your hero is my villian and my vigilante is your hero” thing, at times.”
“Do you trust him?” Alix asked.
“With my life,” Marinette answered immediately. “I’m not gonna keep LadyBug a secret forever. Just timing the reveal for the best effect,” she pointed out.
Alix snorted, “please let me be there when you do. I want to see the explosion on Commandant’s face.”
Marinette laughed with Alix as night finally settled down around them.
Day 4 - Caranthir
@feanorianweek
Day 4- Caranthir > Weapons, People Skills, childhood, Betrayal, Lordship, Dwarves & Humans, Marriage, Appearance
(See bottom for notes.)
. . .
He’d pulled the curtains open so that light streamed in from the window directly onto the bed. She loved the sunlight. She’d appreciate that when she woke up.
And she would wake up. The healers had been very clear on that. Firien would wake up. It was just the herbs the healers had given her that were keeping her unconscious now.
The healers had been much quieter on other matters. Like how fast she would heal once she woke up.
If she would heal once she woke up.
Caranthir clung a little more tightly to the little bundle in his arms.
Useless, all of them. What good were they if they couldn’t even tell him if -
The bundle squirmed, and he took a deep breath. He couldn’t afford to let his temper get the better of him. Not now.
A very quiet knock sounded at the door.
He didn’t want to call to let them in. It might disturb her, or the little one, so he stalked over to the door and yanked it open with his free hand, the other arm still carefully holding his precious bundle.
“My lord.” The messenger kept her voice low as she bowed, and Caranthir appreciated it. “Your brother has arrived.”
He blinked. Relief rushed through him in a wave even as doubt raised its ugly head. “Already?” He’d sent the courier mere days ago. Unless Manwe’s eagles had deigned to carry him, surely he hadn’t reached Curufin yet.
“One of your other brothers, my lord,” she corrected. “Lord Celegorm. He arrived in some . . . haste.”
That could mean nothing good. “Were they pursued?” he demanded. Now, now of all possible times for the Enemy to attack . . .
And if Celegorm had fled here, alone, and not to Maedhros or Maglor, who were far closer -
Quick, harsh footsteps echoed across the flagstones as Celegorm all but ran around the corner in the narrow hallway. He was still covered in the dust of the road, and his hand was on the hilt of his sword.
One of Caranthir’s guards was trailing behind him looking helpless and a little apologetic.
Celegorm just looked relieved. “Brother! There you are. What’s happened? How far away is the Enemy?” He closed the distance between them and raised a hand as if to clap Caranthir on the back, but he froze when he got close enough to see the little bundle in his arms. “And why do you have a baby?”
Oh, good, Caranthir thought dryly. Now they were both confused.
“There was an incursion about two weeks ago, but we took care of that,” he said. “If there’s been more since, I haven’t heard of it. What’s brought you riding in like there’s a battalion of Balrogs on your heels?”
His people looked rather interested to hear that themselves.
Celegorm looked more confused than ever. “Your letter, of course.”
Caranthir wanted very badly to pinch the bridge of his nose against his growing headache, but the baby was squirming around again, and he needed both hands to keep a good grip. “I didn’t send you a letter.”
“No, you sent one to Curufin,” he agreed. “Only he had to cross Maglor’s lands to get there, and I was visiting Maglor at the time - “
“So he just gave it to you instead?” Caranthir demanded incredulously. It took all his self-control to keep the volume at a low hiss.
Celegorm waved this off. “Of course not. But I did ask what had him so quick to leave Maglor’s hospitality, and he told me you had sent him with an urgent request for aid, so we sent him on and agreed that I would ride on as fast as I could with my men.” He paused. “Also, you still haven’t explained the baby.”
It was all starting to make a horrible kind of sense.
“I don’t need military aid,” he said wearily. Firien had, two weeks ago, but it was too late for that now. “If I had, I would have sent to Maglor, not Curufin. He’s closer. I need help with this.” He held the baby out a little helplessly.
Celegorm took him instantly, which hadn’t quite been what Caranthir intended, but if Celegorm hadn’t dropped Celebrimbor during the early years, he probably wouldn’t drop his newest nephew either.
Even if Celegorm’s dust caked tunic wasn’t quite what he wanted the little one cradled up against.
“He’s adorable,” Celegorm said softly before adding with a teasing lilt, “nothing like you at all.”
“Thank you.” He waved his people off. He could handle things from here, and someone needed to go reassure Celegorm’s men that they weren’t all about to be invaded.
Celegorm looked up. “He does, however, look rather like Firien.”
Caranthir nodded.
Celegorm’s eyes widened. “You’re a father? Why didn’t you tell us she was pregnant?”
His neck prickled. It had been too long since he checked in on Firien. He opened the door again quietly and waved Celegorm into the room after him.
Firien was still laying on the bed just as he’d left her. The bandages were still well in place, and she hadn’t bled through them. Good.
He still couldn’t resist going closer and laying his hand on her forehead, just to check that her fever hadn’t risen.
It was steady. That was something.
Not enough, but something.
“We didn’t know,” he finally told Celegorm. “Not until she’d already ridden out with that caravan.”
She had been a traveling bard before she’d married him, despite the dangers of the road, and she’d seen no reason to stay hidden inside the safety of a stone fortress just because of her marriage. He hadn’t tried to stop her. She always came back, after all.
She nearly hadn’t this time.
“They got delayed,” he said quietly. “You know how early the snows came. She was almost due by the time she was getting close to home.”
“And then they were attacked,” Celegorm concluded.
Caranthir had to choke back a bitter laugh. “She had the baby in the middle of the battle.” He shook his head, trying not to imagine it. “The others managed to fight the orcs back, but it was a close thing, and she - well, she couldn’t defend herself. Not like that.”
“Will she make it?”
Caranthir shrugged miserably. “They don’t know.”
Celegorm’s hand closed over his shoulder. “I’m sorry.” He was quiet for a long moment. “I see why you wanted Curufin,” he admitted. “He would have been better at this.”
If she didn’t - If things went wrong -
Curufin would understand how that felt.
And Curufin would know what to do with a baby.
He loved the child so much it hurt, but he didn’t know how he was supposed to do this. He’d been too young when Curufin was born to pay much attention to baby rearing, and there had been enough others to take care of the baby Ambarussa that he hadn’t gotten dragged in until they were old enough for his adolescent self to consider them interesting.
What if he did it wrong? What if he hurt him? What if - ?
Celegorm was bouncing the baby in his arms. “Boy or girl?” he asked.
“Boy,” Caranthir said, pulling himself out of his dark spiral of thoughts.
Celegorm made a pleased noise. “Another little nephew! What’s his name?”
“I don’t know,” Caranthir admitted.
Celegorm looked at him incredulously. “What do you mean you don’t know?”
“Firien was barely conscious when they brought her in,” he said defensively. “She wasn’t exactly thinking straight enough to tell me!”
“Naturally,” Celegorm agreed in tones that suggested Caranthir was being impossibly slow. “But what about his father name?”
Caranthir looked away. “I wanted to wait,” he mumbled. “Until I could talk to her about it.”
He’d never had to name anything more important than a horse before.
The baby was not a horse. The baby was going to have an opinion on whatever he came up with.
“That’s sweet,” Celegorm said, but he continued on with his usual brutal practicality. “But the kid needs a name. If she hates it, she can just call him by his mother name.”
He appreciated that Celegorm acted as if he was completely certain she would be well.
He appreciated far less what came out of Celegorm’s mouth next, which was, “I could help if you want.”
“You named your dog Huan,” he said flatly.
“So? Huan’s a good name.”
“A name that means dog.”
“It means great dog,” Celegorm said, sounding offended.
“That doesn’t change the fact that if I leave it up to you, you’ll probably name him great baby.”
“He is a great baby. Aren’t you, little one? Yes, you are. Yes, you are!”
“We are not calling him that.”
“Well, then you’ll just have to come up with something else,” Celegorm said cheerfully. “Or we can wait for Curufin to get here. Celebrimbor seems to like his name alright.”
That was true. Still. It was his son. It was his job to come up with a name.
“I’ll think of something,” he grumbled. “Now give him back.”
Celegorm did so, albeit a bit reluctantly.
“I wish Atar was here,” Caranthir finally admitted.
Celegorm’s eyes softened. “He would have been thrilled.” He considered it for a moment. “He probably also would have had about two dozen name ideas for you by now.”
“No,” Caranthir bit out automatically, even though that was one thing he didn’t have to worry about.
The baby yawned in his arms, his head snuggling deeper into Caranthir’s tunic.
“I’m going to call you Artanàro,” he decided. “Or Rodnor, where the Sindar can hear.”
Celegorm frowned over the etymology. “What does that mean?”
“Whatever he makes of it,” he said, settling on the edge of the bed and settling little Artanaro’s sleeping form into one arm so that he could reach out with the other to hold Firien’s too warm hand. “Whatever he wants to make of it.”
There were enough dooms in this world already without his son having to bear another one from him.
. . .
(Notes: Those of you are familiar with Gil-Galad’s background might recognize Rodnor and Artanaro as the two forms of his father name.
Those of you are familiar with my Scion stories and How to Train Your (Evil) Dragon would be right in thinking this is not a coincidence. Personally, I consider this a sort of AU of Scion of Somebody, Probably, but feel free to interpret it however you like.
At least according to tolkiengateway, neither of these names has a meaning directly attached, thus Caranthir’s comments at the end of the story.)
my eurovision 2021 ranking (before rehearsals)
hey!! 🤍 i’ll try to keep this short & sweet (and bear in mind some of these are subject to change & depend on my mood) but this is my rough ranking of this year’s entries based solely on the studio cuts <3
dislike:
39. 🇩🇪 jendrik - i don’t feel hate: i knew this would be my last place since i first heard it. he seems like a nice guy but this type of music is just. not for me? in fact i don’t think i’ve ever even managed to make it all the way through since my first listen :/
38. 🇱🇻 samanta tina - the moon is rising: i love love LOVE samanta & think she is an absolute gem but this song & me simply do not go together. that being said i appreciate both her voice & the message
37. 🇵🇱 rafał - the ride: while this is slightly catchy & seems to be an ear worm for me, i cannot take this song seriously. rafał looks ridiculous in those sunglasses in the music video. the lyrics are awful too
neither like nor dislike:
36. 🇦🇱 anxhela peristeri - karma: this is very strange because usually i am the no. 1 fan of ethnic influenced ballads at eurovision, but i just do not get this one. i can definitely see the appeal but it’s not for me
35. 🇲🇰 vasil - here i stand: i think his voice is great however the song doesn’t do much for me. i find it quite forgettable & think he was definitely capable of giving us something better which is a shame
34. 🇫🇮 blind channel - dark side: i enjoyed this quite a bit when it first came out but it’s quickly slid down my ratings. the lyrics are too edgy for me & it’s a throwback to a genre of music that i don’t really enjoy anyway. but i can appreciate that it sticks out & does something different
33. 🇨🇿 benny cristo - omaga: i was a massive fan of kemama last year & while i liked this upon first listen, i have to say its far too generic to really stick out after a while. plus some of the lyrics are a bit creepy lol. having said that i think seeing him perform it live could definitely change my opinion
32. 🇸🇪 tusse - voices: another year, another generic well produced pop song from sweden. should we be surprised anymore? it’s okay, i don’t hate it, but i’m struggling to find anything i like about it. plus the lyrics are the most “eurovision cliche lyrics” i’ve ever heard
31. 🇬🇧 james newman - embers: okay while this is ranked relatively low, i have to say this is better than anything we’ve sent since 2017. it’s a nice song, i enjoy it when it’s on, but i don’t have an urge to play it, if that makes sense?
30. 🇲🇹 destiny - je me casse: i know this is probably blasphemy but i just do not understand the hype around this song. destiny has a great voice but i don’t see how this song sticks out in anyway that it’s the favourite to win? it’s another one that i won’t skip but i won’t seek out to listen to
29. 🇦🇹 vincent bueno - amen: i do enjoy this, but i wish it just had a bit more oomph. the lyrics for the verses are good but the chorus is just lacking something. i do think this could be a dark horse to qualify though
28. 🇸🇮 ana soklič - amen: i just realised the two amens are right next to each other on my ranking lol. anyway, this is only so high because of her amazing voice. the song doesn’t really do anything for me, but you have to appreciate that level of talent
27. 🇺🇦 go_a - shum: this is one i know i’ll appreciate more live, but i just can’t get into the studio version. plus i really liked solovey last year so this one seems worse in comparison
26. 🇲🇩 natalia gordienko - sugar: this is good but i think all “dream team” songs are a little bit dated nowadays. however saying that i love the music video & moldova always improve live
25. 🇵🇹 the black mamba - love is on my side: this has been a big grower. it’s not a favourite, but i think it definitely has its niche, and i can appreciate that
24. 🇳🇱 jeangu macrooy - birth of a new age: grow was in my top 5 last year, so it was always gonna be hard for jeangu to deliver something as good. this has grown on me, but i’m still not 100% on board
like:
23. 🇳🇴 tix - fallen angel: i didn’t like this at first because i was so heartbroken that keiino didn’t win the national selection, but i’ve gotten over it now lol. it’s cheesy but in a good way, i think this act doesn’t take itself too seriously either which makes it more enjoyable
22. 🇸🇲 senhit ft flo rida - adrenalina: it’s fun, catchy, even has a surprise verse from flo rida! probably san marino’s 3rd best entry ever (justice for complice & crisalide 💔)
21. 🇨🇾 elena tsagrinou - el diablo: it’s just a very good pop song. i’m not in love with it but it’s of a very good quality (well. apart from the lyrics). i’m sure the staging will improve it even more
20. 🇬🇷 stefania - super girl: greece is one of my biggest growers from last year, i think this is a MUCH better song than supergirl was. i’m really rooting for stefania
19. 🇪🇪 uku suviste - the lucky one: this has been such a big grower, it’s insane. i can recognise it’s not the best song but i just really like it for some reason.
18. 🇪🇸 blas cantó - voy a quedarme: i’m a sucker for native language ballads, and this is a pretty standard one, but it’s good to me. blas seems like a real sweetheart too, which helps :)
17. 🇨🇭 gjon’s tears - tout l’univers: this is another one of those songs that i really should love, and while i like it, i can’t really connect with it. gjon’s entry last year was my second favourite, and unfortunately this doesn’t scratch the same itch that did, it’s still a very good song & i completely understand why it’s one of the favourites to win
16. 🇧🇪 hooverphonic - the wrong place: i really don’t like hooverphonic as a band (actually it’s mostly alex callier that i dislike) but this is just a good song. i am still upset that luka didn’t get to go to eurovision though :/
15. 🇮🇪 lesley roy - maps: another massive grower! i much prefer this to her song last year. i really hope ireland can get their shit together & give this song the staging it deserves
14. 🇦🇿 efendi - mata hari: this is basically a carbon copy of cleopatra, and i guess i liked that so i like this. however i will say it has dropped in my ranking a bit. i’m ranking this solely on the song, efendi herself is a different matter & i’m not really educated enough on what’s happening in azerbaijan/armenia to comment but from what i’ve seen it’s not the best, let’s say
13. 🇱🇹 the roop - discoteque: i prefer on fire from last year, but this is definitely not a bad effort. i can’t see it as a contender for the win though. another one i will probably enjoy much more live
12. 🇷🇴 roxen - amnesia: i really like the message of this song. i just wish she would work on her english pronunciation, but that’s a minor complaint. but i really like roxen as an artist
love:
11. 🇷🇸 hurricane - loco loco: i love girl groups, and this is no exception. vocally they’re really good, i love that it’s in serbian, & i also just really love sanja vučić lol
10. 🇭🇷 albina - tick tock: i wish this was fully in croatian, but i think it’s a great song regardless. i loved her performance at dora so hopefully they’ll do something similar/even better at esc
9. 🇧🇬 victoria - growing up is getting old: i preferred tears getting sober from last year but this is still really good. the lyrics are some of my favourite of this year, they really resonate with me. victoria is a really interesting artist & i’m really glad she got introduced to me through esc
8. 🇮🇱 eden alene - set me free: the revamp has made this move like 20 places up in my ranking lol. she is so talented & i just hope they have a good staging concept!
7. 🇮🇸 daði og gagnamagnið - 10 years: think about things was good but i think this is even better! i love the retro influences & the lyrics are so sweet
6. 🇬🇪 tornike kipiani - you: i might be one of the only people who adores this song. the lyrics paint such a clear picture of a simple, strong love. and i think it’s quiet but powerful at the right moments. i know i will be heartbroken when this doesn’t qualify :(
5. 🇫🇷 barbara pravi - voilà: i played this too much & ruined it for myself, but i love it again now. very authentically french but without overdoing it (cough 2017 staging cough), just a beautiful song
4. 🇮🇹 måneskin - zitti e buoni: i’m not a massive rock fan, but a song like this i just vibe with. it’s just so good. italy is always either my no. 1 or in my top 5 since they returned (apart from 2012 & 2014) and they’ve done it again. this is definitely a contender to win
3. 🇦🇺 montaigne - technicolour: this song is eclectic but i love it. i didn’t like don’t break me, but this is so much better, and so much more authentic to montaigne as an artist. i know it’s divisive, but i’m on the side that loves it
2. 🇩🇰 fyr og flamme - øve os på hinanden: this is just so fun. i love the 80s vibe, the performance at the national selection was simple but still very engaging. this is one i will play for many years after the contest
1. 🇷🇺 manizha - russian woman: where do i even start. native language, ethnic influenced sound, important message, charismatic performer. this song is amazing. and i’m so glad i’ve found manizha to listen to!
so that’s it!! if anyone wants to chat about their thoughts please message me!! 🤍
Twisted Hearts Chapter 1
Ok so here is twisted hearts, the story of where Sora found himself at Twisted Wonderland
hope you all enjoy, fair warning
this chapter is long
⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙
‘This feels…familiar…’ he thought as he felt himself drifting into an endless abyss, he opened his eyes as he finally felt the ground; he slowly got up as nothingness surrounds him.
“Ah…my dearly beloved”
Sora looks around, searching for the voice. Yet found no one. ‘Another dream?’ he says out loud and starts to walk on the darkness, this feels familiar for Sora but at the same time, it’s also unfamiliar to him.
“A lovely and noble flower of evil”
“Truly, you are the most beautiful of them all”
Sora starts to walk into the darkness to hopefully find something, anything. Soon, he hears horses carrying a carriage, he looks around and sees something in the distance coming his way, he starts to run towards it. As he was getting close, all the sudden heartless start to appear between him and what he can see is a carriage.
“Mirror, mirror on the wall...”
“Who is the most...”
Sora did not listen to the voice as the heartless start to get near him; he summons his key blade, the kingdom key, and starts to fight off the heartless. Striking and slashing the heartless while dodging the heartless from coming at him.
After finishing off the heartless, he noticed something one on the ground at the last heartless he has defeated, hi pick it up in curious, it looks like a pen with a chain that looks like it could be attached to his keyblade, curious, he attaches the chain to his keyblade, the keyblade glows and disappear which made Sora surprised. He tries to summon it his keyblade but nothing happens, which confused Sora, and before he can think about it. The carriage finally arrives in front of him.
A black carriage carrying an ornate circular mirror with glass a deep emerald color, and skeletal horses at the front skeletal horse, it nearly looks like it’s a carriage that goes to a funeral. Sora disperses his keyblade and looks at the carriage warily as its doors open; he looks inside to sees nobody in it, only a mirror. Cautiously, he steps into the carriage.
“Those who are guided by the dark mirror”
“As long as your heart desires, take the hand that appears in the mirror”
As soon as the voice says it, he noticed a strange eerie light coming from the mirror the carriage had, and a hand appeared before him from the mirror. Sora stares at the hand, he could hear his heart beating fast. He slowly takes it.
“For me. For them. For you. We are all running out of time! No matter what, never let go of my hand.”
All of the sudden, the hand-pulled him through the mirror. He starts to lose consciousness, and darkness takes over his vision.
⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙
Sora could hear something banging on something else, he opens his eyes to see that he is somewhere dark, he outstretches one of his arms, only to be met with a wood surface, he starts to feel around and realized, that he is in a box.
He then hears a voice on the other side “Crap, people are coming... Gotta get a uniform while… grrrr! The lid is too heavy!” followed by a rattle from the outside, he goes to knock on the wood.
“Hey, is someone there? Can you get me out?” he attempts to yell, but it seems that the box is too thick, that it can’t be heard from the inside. He thought about using his key blade but, the keyblade would be too big in the tight space that he is in.
“Grrr..It’s no use, time for my secret technique!” Sora then felt the box heating up, he leans to the surface of the box and then it starts to open, making Sora fall off
“Whoaaa!”
“Ffggnnnaaaa!?”
Sora falls to the ground, he groans and looks up to see a grey-furred animal that looks like either a cat or a raccoon, but the creature has blue flames coming out of his ears, it sort of reminds him of Hades from the underworld.
He seems surprised seeing Sora wide awake “Why are you awake? You’re supposed to be asleep!” the cat…raccoon? Creature says.
“A cat?” he wonders out loud, the cat thing? Looks annoyed “Who are you calling a cat! I am the great Lord Grim, y’know!? Treat me with respect, you pitiful human!” Sora tilted his head in confusion as Grim got on all fours “Enough chit-chat! Gimme those clothes! Or else I’ll roast you!”
Sora looks at his clothes, surprised to see that he is not in his regular attire, but in a black robe with gold and purples trim and pattern “Where did I get this?” he checks out his clothes.
“Hey! Don’t ignore me! Fgggnnnnaaaa!” Grim starts to run at Sora, and jumps to pounce on Sora, but Sora side steps, making Grim jump into the casket behind Sora.
“Gyahh!” The demon-cat-raccoon exclaimed when it face-planted to the cushioned casket.
“Sorry” Sora says, but then he starts running away from the room, as he runs, he looks around over where he is ‘am I in another world, that means I can find a way back to Destiny Island’ he thought as he runs through the rather gloomy hallway.
He soon finds himself in a library, where he sees some books are flying “Where am I?” he wonders and soon see a fireball head to his way, but he dodges last second and looks to see that the cat-raccoon animal headed to him.
“Hehehe…you think you can get away from me, you dumb human” Sora looks at Grim and frowns “You again, the cat-raccoon?” he still has no idea what Grim is as he stomps in frustration “How many times do I have to tell you that I’m not a cat or a raccoon, I’m the great and powerful Grim, now gimme those clothes”
“I’m not gonna give it to you, and you're being rude” Sora says, crossing his arms while narrowing his eyes at Grim as the cat smirks “Then it’s time for me to roast you,” the blue flames on his ears begin to grow.
He inhaled and aimed his fire at Sora, but he quickly dodges it and gets into a battle stance but have not summoned his keyblade yet.
“Stop it, you’re gonna burn the place down” he says, but Grim smirks “Then give me your clothes now” he got on all four and jump to pouch Sora again.
And then out of nowhere, there was a sound of a cracked whip. “Eh?! That hurts! What’s this cord?!” Grim cried out, trying to break free from the restraint.
“It’s not a mere cord! It’s the whip of love!” A voice corrected Grim from the shadows. Sora eases his posture and looks behind him to see a silhouette figure that came closer to them.
Sora can see the man up close. He was wearing a top hat that had a little mirror on it; he is also wearing a suit and a cape, on his side has three mirrors and chains of keys, half of the man’s face is covered behind the black mask, but Sora could see the glowing yellow eyes beneath the mask.
“Aah, I finally found you! I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” He sighed, disappointment written across his face. Sora looks at the man in confusion “Umm…I’m sorry?”
The man sighs and crosses his arm, still holding firm to the ‘whip of love’ and look at Grim “Also, having a familiar that you haven’t tamed is against the school rules!” this made Sora and Grim look at each other “He is not-“
“I’m nobodies’ familiar!” Grim looks at the headmaster while continue to struggle “Let me go!”
The man brushes off Grim’s comment “Yes, yes, every rebellious familiar always says that.” He raised his hand which has a golden claw on each finger, he made a zipping gesture “Now, please be quiet and let us have a converse in peace.”
“hhmmpp” Grim’s mouth magically zipped as the man turns to Sora, who just looks confused “However, it is unheard of for a student to be able to open their door by themselves” he looks at Sora with a small frown. “Hold on, I was in there until he opened it by force” Sora says, explaining himself “I see, so the familiar is to blame” The man looks at Grim “Well then, If you brought him here, then it is your responsibility to look after him.”
Sora and Grim look at each other again “But he's not-“
“Ah that’s right. Come, come now the entrance ceremony started long ago! Let us not be later than we already are!” the man says cutting Sora off and ushers the boy leaving the library carrying the still tied up Grim who continues to struggle.
Sora is very confused, where is he? Why is he here? And why did is his outfit change? The last thing he remembers is that he was fighting Yozora in some sort of tower, and then, after defeating Yozora, he finds himself back at final world, but after that it all went blank. He looks to the man in front of him.
“uhh, sir?” Sora called out earning the man’s attention “Where are we exactly?”
The man stops and looks at Sora in surprise “What’s this? Are you still dazed?” he placed a golden claw on his chin. “It appears the teleportation magic has left you disoriented; that is a common side effect; let me give you a brief explanation as we make our way to the ceremony, for I am so gracious!”
Sora tilted his head in confusion as the headmaster continued,
“This is Night Raven College!” he motioned to the school around them. “Magicians that are blessed with a unique aptitude for magic gather from all over the world, here at the most prestigious magical academy in Twisted Wonderland.” He turned back to Sora. “And I’m the headmaster, appointed to take care of this academy by the board chairman, Dire Crowley.” He turned back and continued the way to the ceremony. “Only those magicians seen as worthy by the Dark Mirror can attend this school, chosen ones use the gate and are summoned here from around the world…an Ebony carriage carrying a gate should have gone to meet you as well.”
Now that he mentions it, Sora did remember about something about a carriage in his dream. ‘Or maybe…it wasn’t a dream’ he thought as the Headmaster ushered Sora again; “Come now, we have an entrance ceremony to get to.”
⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙
“—Now then, are the entrance ceremonies and dorm sorting finished?” Riddle says looking at the last first year that has been sorted to a dorm. He stood among the other dorm Perfects as the first years got sorted to their dorm. They’ve already made their introduction of themselves and their dorm.
Riddle looked at Azul who nod and lower the papers that the headmaster is holding “yes, I believe so”
Riddle nods and looks at the new Heartslabyul dorm student “Listen up, new students. I make the rules in Heartlabyul. Anyone who breaks them will lose their heads—do keep that in mind.” He said sternly.
Leona, the Savanaclaw Perfect yawned. “This boring ceremony is finally done.” He placed a hand on his hip as he looked at the first-years. “Let’s get back to the dorm. Savanaclaw, follow me” he said.
“To all the new students, I would like to congratulate you on your enrollment here! I hope each and every one  of you're able to live a fulfilling school life!” Azul says as he took a step forward. He might seem smiling. He folded his arms over his chest. “As the dorm leader of Octavinelle, I will support you as best as I can!”
Vil, the dorm Perfect of Pomefiore look at the others “By the way, where’s the Headmaster? He flew off in the middle of the ceremony”
Azul was about to answer but got cut off by Idia, the Perfect of Ignihyde,  he speaks through his floating tablet “He abandoned his duties…”
Kalim, the Perfect of Scarabia dorm looks curious “maybe he had a stomachache and has to go to the bathroom?” He suggested. But as soon as he says that, the door burst open, revealing the Headmaster.
“Not at all,” the Headmaster says, followed by a student that the dorm Perfects see has a very spiky brown hair. “Oh, he’s here” Riddle says and looks at the boy. The headmaster made his way to the mirror with the boy who looks around the room in curiosity.
“I can’t believe you all, we are missing one new student so I went to find him” the Headmaster says as Sora looks at him ‘wait, student? I’m in a school?’ he thought as the Headmaster turned to him.
“Now, you’re the only one who we have yet to assign to the dormitory. I shall watch over the raccoon, step in front of the dark mirror” he says gesturing the mirror which holds a tight grip to Grim who still trying to break free from the ‘lash of love.’
“Hhmmmpp” Grim muffled as Sora took a step towards the mirror that has a face.
“State thy name” the dark mirror says.
“my name is Sora” he replies, “Sora…the shape of thy soul is…” the mirror says before going  silent for a moment until it finally says:
“I do not know”
“Come again?” The Headmaster says, looking surprised
“Forsooth, I feel a strong wavelength of magic power from thee. The magic that is both ancient but not. The magic that does has been forgotten and no longer exists from this world. Howbeit, thou art’s soul is not eligible for any dormitory.” The dark mirror explained.
Sora could hear many students whispering and muttering about him as The Headmaster looked at the mirror in disbelief “magic that does not exist within this world? How could this possibly have happened?” he wondered; this gave Grim a chance to finally be freed by the lash.
“Then I’ll take their place, I’m even more powerful than some ancient magic, check this out” Grim start to prepare his fire magic “Everyone get down!” Riddle says as Grim start to set things on fire. The fire even hit Kalim’s butt “AH, HOT, HOT, MY BUTT IS ON FIRE” he screams, tries to put the fire out.
Sora quickly make his moves, he uses his hand to use to cast Watera on Kalim and onto the fire to put it out before turning to Grim, “hey stop that!” he says as he uses Stopra on Grim, making the raccoon-cat freeze with a time on his head for around 10 seconds counting down, “he’s frozen in time...” one of the students says, looking amazed.
“only for a few seconds, hurry!” Sora says as Riddle took out his magic pen “off with your head” he raised his magic pen and placed a heart-shaped collar on Grim as the timer reach zero.
“—fgnah Gaaah! What’s this?!” Grim tries to take the collar off, but to no avail.
“Rules number 23 of the Queen of Hearts: You must not bring cats into areas of festivities.” Riddle huffed and crossed his arms looking at Grim. “As you are a cat, trespassing here is a serious rule violation. We will have you leave immediately.”
“I’m not a cat! A cat can’t burn things like-” Sora is getting ready his water spell but pauses seeing Grim fail to start his fire spell. “W—What?! My fire… it won’t work!!”
Riddle just smirk as he put his magic pen away “Until I remove that collar, you won’t be able to use your magic. It will get removed once you’re thrown out of the school.”
“wow, as wonderful as ever, all magic was sealed by your unique magic, Riddle” Azul says praising Riddle “I want it…no I wouldn’t want that cast on me” his tone change midway.
“You must do something; he is your familiar!” The Headmaster glaring at Sora as he groans, “I’ve been trying to tell you, he is not my familiar”
“eh, he’s not” The Headmaster looks surprised but then clear his throat “*ahem* if that is the case, then would someone take it out of the school. We won’t turn you into a stew. For I am so gracious” one of the teacher nods and grabs Grim to take him out.
“Gyaaahhh! Lemme go! I’m definitely, definitely—! Going to become a great mage!” Grim says before the door closes on him, shutting out his complaints.
“Now I kinda feel bad for him,” Sora says feeling a bit guilty “don’t be, with your help, we have stopped the beast from making more damage to the school,” Azul says looking at Sora politely, ‘a magic that able to stop time, what powerful magic he has’ he thought.
“Well…I guess your right” Sora says still looking at the door. “Now that is out of the way, after a whole lot of unexpected events, I shall bring this entrance ceremony to a close. Dorm leader, please show the new students to their respective dormitory”
“Hm? Now that I think about it, I don’t see the Dorm leader of Disomnia, Mister Draconia, around at all” The Headmaster says, looking around for the missing dorm leader. Sora heard many people mutter as the dorm leaders seem to discuss how they forgot to invite Malleus Draconia to the ceremony. ‘Seems like he is very popular’ He thought as one student came up to take the Disonmia first years, and with that, the students, and the dorm leaders left, leaving only Sora and The Headmaster.
⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙⁺˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚⁺‧͙
The Headmaster cleared his throat “now then, um…I’m sorry, what is your last name?” Sora look at Crowley and scratch his hair “I don’t have a last name, but it’s fine to just call me Sora” The Headmaster nods “very well then Sora, as for the term on where you shall stay, I’m sure I can figure something out”
“Uumm… actually Headmaster, I think there has been a mistake, I just really wanted to head back home,” Sora says earning a surprised look from the Headmaster “A-are you certain? The Ebony Carriage has never once made a mistake, you are in a very prestigious school where many students can learn very powerful magic, not taking it would be a waste”
Sora nodded firmly “I’m sure of it, I have made my friends worried about me far too much, and while being in this school sounds exciting, I want to go home and get back to my friends”
Crowley looks conflicted, the boy is carrying ancient magic that is unheard of, with him and Mister Draconia in Night Raven College, it would give a very huge benefit for the school. However, by the look of this young man, he seems to be very determined to go, with a heavy sigh he nods “Very well then, The Dark Mirror will promptly send you back home.”
He guides Sora to the platform in front of the Dark Mirror again. Once the boy stood there, Crowley stood behind him, hand still on his shoulder. “Now, visualize your home very clearly…”
Sora closed his eyes and visualized his home, the beach, the Island, where his friends are waiting for him. The mask in the mirror appeared once again from the green smoke. “Now, Dark Mirror! Guide this child back to the place they belong to!”
The Headmaster cleared his throat in embarrassment. “One more time. Dark Mirror! Guide this-”
“It is nowhere,” The mirror says.
“What?” Crowley drops his hand from Sora’s shoulder as he opens his eyes, he looks a bit worried.
“Nowhere in this world does this one belong. There is nothing.” The Mirror says. Sora sighs, he can’t say that he is not surprised, but he figures that it won’t be that easy. He has disappeared because he used too much of his magic and went past the limit, he figured that getting home would be a challenge.
“Oh my, for all the years that I have been The Headmaster. This is the first time anything like this has happened. I’m not sure what to do...” He looks at Sora “where do you come from?”
“I’m from Destiny Island,” Sora says looking at him “Destiny Island, hmm, I never heard of an  Island by that name before” Sora sighs, “it’s alright, I guess I have to search my way back, I’m sorry for the inconvenience,” he says.
“hold on a second,” Crowley says “there is no way I’m letting a child go on his own, as an educator, throwing out a penniless youth who has no contact with their guardians would just break my heart. Since I am so kind!”
Sora look at him confused “umm ok?” Crowley then says in a bit of a cheery tone “how about you stay in the school for the time being. In the meantime, I will search for anything about your Island”
Sora looked at Crowley surprised. “Really?” The Headmaster nodded, “but of course. Ahh, how kind I am~! Aren’t I such an exemplary educator~?”
‘And as a bonus,  I get to have this student in my school, ah, how lucky I am’ he thought gleefully.
Sora looks at him a bit weird but he smiles, “thank you, I appreciate it” then he looks at The Headmaster curiously “But where can I stay?” Crowley smiles “No need to worry. I know a place where you can stay. It’s a little old, but a tasteful building.”
Helsaweek free space
(I missed a bunch this year because virus-stress has worn down my brain. Might try to write for all the prompts I missed sometime, but for now, have this.)
Words
- One of them standard “soulmate au’s” where whatever your soulmate writes on their arm shows up on yours + two very secretive people who have their own reasons to not want to find their soulmate + hiding your identity because surely you’re not going to just run into them one day without knowing who they are = some very terrible, awkward situations.
- Refrences to Frozen Fever and Frozen 2
- Elsa writing is in italics, Hans writing is bold italics
-----
If he was not a Prince of the Southern Isles, Hans would have been using the words to try and find his soulmate. But the Westergard family discourages, even forbids, royals from marrying their soulmates; they say those feeling only make you weak and vulnerable.
Luckily, the girl whose messages appear on his arm is not offended by this.
It’s not safe for anyone to be around me, she writes. I can’t control it. I’ve hurt people I care about. I don’t want to hurt you, too.
She won’t tell him what “it” is, and he doesn’t push it.
In that case…maybe we can just be friends? Hans writes her, the pen scratching against his arm. My brothers don’t pay a lot of attention to me. It would be nice to have someone to talk to at least.
I guess that’s okay.
What’s your name?
I
Don’t know if I should tell you
I don’t want you to look for me.
Okay
But I need to call you something
What if you make up a name? Like authors do?
She takes a few minutes to respond.
Isa.
Okay Isa.
And you can call me John.
John.
Maybe someday
When
If I ever get this under control
I’ll tell you my real name
 (Hans will wish he had kept asking. At the time, he hadn’t seen a reason to argue with her. After all, the world was a big place, and it was unlikely he would ever run into his soulmate by accident.)
(And if he did…he would know, right?)
---
Isa wrote him about her lessons, missing being able to go outside without fear, worries about her little sister (Isa had nicknamed her “Joan”, after a portrait of Joan of Arc she seemed to like talking to). Hans wrote her about his brother’s cruel pranks, his countries dismal atmosphere, the young foal he had been gifted named Sitron. Isa listened to his complaints even when they felt silly. Hans encouraged Isa in her battle against whatever was tormenting her.
It was nice, for a while.
Then his family found out that he still kept in touch with his soulmate.
“Unless she’s someone we can manipulate, there’s no reason to bother with her.”
“Like Hans would be soulmates with anyone destined for power!”
“But I’m not going to try and marry her! I don’t even know her name!”
In the end, he had to swear to not speak with her anymore.
(But since Hans technically had never been speaking with her anyway…)
I can’t write you as much as I used to, or they’ll notice. We can still keep in touch, okay?
---
Without a constant confidant to keep him distracted from neglect, his heart hardened.
Sometimes, they didn’t talk for weeks.
(One time, they didn’t talk for months. My parents…Isa had written, and refused to say any more.
I’m sorry, he wrote back.)
But still, she was always there, in the back of his mind.
*When I become a hero* he thought to himself *I’ll find her and save her from whatever thing has been haunting her all these years*
---
I’m nervous she had written him, the night before he arrived in Arendelle.
So am I he had written back. I’m meeting someone important tomorrow. I have it all planned out. If all goes well, I might finally be able to escape from my family.
I wish I could escape.
If I mess up tomorrow
Whatever is happening, you’ll be fine.
Tomorrow night, I’ll be telling you all about my brilliant plan’s success and you’ll be telling me about how you were able to control yourself just fine.
(He couldn’t tell her he was planning to get engaged to someone else. Even if they had agreed long ago that they weren’t going to marry each other, it would’ve felt awkward.)
And maybe actually be able to talk to your sister for once.
Okay. Right.
Thank you, John.
 ---
(The next night, Hans was too busy dealing with a kingdom full of panicked citizens and a summer blizzard to write anything to his soulmate.
She didn’t write to him either.
He should have noticed.)
---
John!
I’m sorry, I should have written to you sooner!
Things have been so hectic the last few days
I told her
I told her everything
Everyone knows and it’s okay
I was so scared
I thought I had lost Anna forever
But I finally figured out how to control it
Anna?
My sister
Her real name is Anna
(More words appeared. Hans didn’t process any of them.)
Elsa?
You know who I am
Were you at the coronation?
John?
Hans refused to look at his arm for a week.
---
Of course.
Of course it was her.
The one good thing in his life, and he had almost-
---
Are you afraid of me?
Please John
Just
Answer me
---
He should tell her to stop.
Never speak to her again.
It was torture.
If she found out who her soulmate really was…
---
Don’t stop
John?
Don’t stop talking to me
Please.
Keep writing
I don’t know if I can
I might not write you back
For a long time
And it’s not you
It’s not because of
Your powers or anything
Just please don’t stop
---
It was a self-inflicted punishment, and one he fully deserved.
---
He did write a bit, after that. Mostly just short comments on her stories or funny doodles when he was bored.
She never pushed him for an answer.
Now that he knew, she was a lot more open about everything. She told him her parent’s real names, what had really happened that had made her push Anna and everyone else away, about her creations, about Arendelle and its people, about Anna’s finding her own soulmate, about being a good queen.
(The one good thing about being an official disgrace was that none of his family bothered to try and stop him from reading her words anymore.)
---
I got hit by a snowball today.
Out of nowhere.
I almost though you had found me for a second.
oh
I might have sneezed.
Into a bugel horn.
But you don’t even live in Arendelle
I assumed
I don’t
How
That’s what I’d like to know
---
I’ve been hearing things.
A voice.
---
Arendelle is in danger.
We’re going to the woods.
I don’t know
When we’ll be back
Good luck
With that.
---
Hans was sitting in the stables, trying to read, when his arm started feeling a bit numb.
Then it turned cold.
Then…
Hans watched in horror as faint outlines of snowflakes started to appear.
Elsa
Elsa?
What’s happening?
---
A few hours later, he had scratched his arm open from writing so much and was desperately trying to talk himself out of stealing away to Arendelle’s mythical forest himself when the cold faded away as suddenly as it had appeared.
---
John?
It’s a long story
---
You died?!
---
You’re leaving.
---
You’re running away again, Elsa.
I’m not running away!
The forest needs me.
Anna needs you.
Anna is strong.
She’ll be fine without me.
But does she want to be without you?
---
Hans could care less about family, about “true love”, about soulmates.
So why did he keep arguing with her?
Now Elsa was the one sending curt replies, while he was the one who couldn’t stop writing to her.
How could he have everything he ever wanted, and just throw it all away like that?
How dare she.
---
*Anna didn’t jump in front of my sword for you to just abandon her again* he thought, but did not write.
---
You won’t even tell me who you really are! Why should I listen to you?
You don’t want to know who I am.
You can’t know that!
Believe me, I do.
You would hate yourself. You already hate me.
Yes, I’m mad at you right now
But I don’t hate you
You do
You really do
And you have every reason to after what I
And he said no more.
---
Look to the North.
It was the first time she had written him in three days.
There was a strange light in the sky, glittering like a fresh snowfall.
He took Sitron and followed it.
---
Surely she wouldn’t be foolish enough to come all the way here.
---
She was.
Hans almost didn’t recognize her at first. Her hair was down, her gown glowing white against the night skies and dark cliffs. A horse stood at her side, its colors shifting strangely. There were no ships anywhere in sight.
“It is you.” She said quietly.
“How did you…?”
“I rode.” She gestured to the horse, which on closer inspection was made of water.
(A Nokk, he remembered from her messages.)
“You rode across the ocean?!”
She shrugged, a bit awkwardly. “I didn’t want to take a ship. I didn’t want Anna asking questions and finding out about…” she gestured.
“…Yeah. This.”
He dismounted. Sighed. He was wholly unprepared to have this conversation.
“Okay. We should…do you want to sit down? This is probably going to take a while.”
---
Why did you…
Why didn’t you…
I should have known…
I should have figured it out, but I was so stupid and blinded and desperate…
I should have reached out to you, I knew you were hurting, I should have tried to help you…
---
“It’s getting late.” He finally said. “Or…early, I guess.” They had talked all night, and the sky was already lightening. “I should go back before anyone notices I’m gone. Which might take a while, but still-“
“Wait.” She said.
He waited. She looked him over, considering. Sighed. Stared up into his eyes.
“Hans. Come back with me.”
“What? …You can’t mean…are you crazy?! After everything I…I almost killed you!”
“You said…that you had though about saving me someday, but you never thought you were strong enough to do it. Well, I thought the same thing. About saving you, I mean. Finding a way to bring you to Arendelle, away from your family, but…I was scared of letting you get too close to me. That if we met, we wouldn’t be able to stay away from each other.”
He snorted at that, clenching his fists to try to hide the trembling in his hands.
“Hans…I’m not scared anymore. Of myself, or of you. Please. I want to make this right.” She reached out to him.
And he knew he shouldn’t, could think of a million reasons why (*not good enough not strong enough weak worthless only going to hurt yourself only going to hurt her can’t trust can’t believe in anyone*), but…he was just so tired of it all, and she wasn’t a liar like them, and he wanted.
He took her hand. Something settled, deep inside him.
“Okay. Just one question.”
“Yes?”
He gestured to Sitron. “How do we get a horse to ride a horse across the ocean?”
Her laugh was exactly as adorable as he had always imagined it being.
-----
(And he convinced her to spend more time in Arendelle, and she convinced him that the woods weren’t so bad, and they built a nice little cottage right on the border so they could divide their time equally between the town and the forest, and lived happily ever after the end.)
