Places We Have Loved: The Pyramid Scheme; Grand Rapids, MI

This has been a popular request and has been on my to-do list for a long time. It was fun to figure out how best to feature Jeff VandenBerg's mural on the side of the building, and I opted to simplify things a bit by including just the first few panels as an homage (yes, there's a window and a door there in real life and the building extends MUCH further back, but hopefully you'll forgive me for taking some artistic liberty).

Places We Have Loved is a spinoff series from Places I Have Lived (more about that here). After I ran out of my own homes to draw, I wanted to continue working in this style just for fun, so I also began illustrating some of my favorite places in Grand Rapids. As a concept, Places We Have Loved may be iconic public places, other people's homes where I've spent meaningful time, or commissions by businesses.

I recall saying this before, but it bears repeating:

There could be a billion trans people in the world and it still wouldn't be a bad thing because being trans is not a bad thing. Even if the rate of people discovering they are trans is "disproportionate" to trends from decades ago, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a natural consequence for there being more trans people being able to stay alive, and, overall, being able to live in a slightly more tolerant world. You'd only see that as a bad thing if you actively didn't want trans people to either live or live a life that facilitates wellness.

#trans #transgender #lgbt #lgbtq #ftm #mtf #nonbinary #like even with there being more OPEN AND OUT trans people there are still more cis people by volume #even in my high school with three trans girls and three trans guys (including me) and a few NB people...#...there were still a THOUSAND cis kids going to school with us. imagine complaining when cis people are still 'dominant'#i don't know what my secondary school's population is because it's a big campus so you can deal with high school stats lol #like thank gd we are beginning to live in a world where the trans population CAN grow #i want there to be more trans people. because trans people will continue to be trans #we will continue being trans no matter what laws you put into place. no matter how dangerous you make the world for us...#...we will continue to be trans whether or not you approve. and that's fucking beautiful. i want us to live. i want us to eat well.#i want us to not worry about anything in this world. and that's going to happen one day. it will happen just like the sun rises each morning #if that is a threat to you then that is your own fault - your own self-destructive and sad thoughts about people and our world #and that is not my burden to carry - i have my own.

do u know that even the size of the different size of vegetables at another country amazed me because from where i came from they are all smaller and scrawnier

#to remind u guys if u're thinking about something naughty stop right there; the different size of the food served is also surprising #twisted wonderland #twst #sebek zigvolt #ace trappola #deuce spade #twst yuu #twst mc #fanart #do westerners go to asian country feels like they are served dwarf's portion #because as an asian; it always feel like we are served giant's portion; not exaggerating bcs we can never finish it #understandable because westerners can grow so tall so they must need more energy to burn #it's like if we order food; we asians always have to have a tupperware to take leftover home #but the price of the food in all the food places is so expensive it's reasonable the portion is big #i might ignite if paying so much we only get rabbit portion #anyhow i am just thinking of this because of the briar valley's big horse post #i do love to think everything is bigger in briar valley #the trees are all so lushfull and majestic like they all have lived a thousand years already #and the vegetables all just grow happily and absorb so much nutrient from the soil they are so big also #i was thinking of drawing e pel too but the space #while to people who born in this country feels things like these are normal #the thought of being able to be born in such a country where the produce all looking so big and healthy is such a blessing to me #it almost feels like they take it for granted; but it's just what they are born to #i have a nephew who is SUPER picky & waste food so much #i am crying everytime #yes y'all have a lot of food and good life here but h e l p #i'm sure the climate also makes vegetables bigger #i think i heard in winter plants stock more nutrients in their produce as stock for spring & summer #that's why winter veggies are better & sweeter and all #my country's vegetables are scrawny because the heat evaporates everything

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it

they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons

and musical instruments

And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses

And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

#yes I KNOW i posted about this the other day but *crying* i just love plant domestication and the history of agriculture #and humanity's positive affect on the ecosystems we live in #mine #image IDs in alt text #hmm. I'm gonna tag this #permaculture #just to pspsps @ that community to look at how cool gourds are please everyone grow birdhouse gourds and give cavity nesters places to live #i don't think mine will become fully ripe before i get my first frost :( next year i need to start gourds indoors #i didn't want to grow them before because i didn't have much garden space but now i do and i need to grow all of them #i might be. a little obsessed with gourds. but also i saw a pair of purple martins flying by the road last year #and i had never seen one before then! and i need to see more of them #i have a few hundred barn swallows but i need more birds flying around my house. more!!#and also i have a ton of invasive cavity nesting species around here. house sparrows and starlings.#gotta make up for those things competing with native birds for nest dites #*sites #the invasive birds very often win :/#that's why they're invasive #i really do need to start trapping them....

outfit ramblings:

first of all that is a Terrible rendition of what Home looks like in my head. i just needed to fill empty space </3

the staff was the toughest part honestly. bc it Had to be paintbrush-themed, but then halfway through scribbling i was like "oh shit. there are only so many ways to draw a paintbrush-wizard-staff and Weevmo already hit it out of the park." so if you're seeing similarities! you're right! i tried to make it as different as i could! there is Inspiration from their marvelous design, however accidental or subconscious! Apologies!

he gets a pointed hood instead of a hat because a) it looks great on him! and b) it has less of a chance of messing up his hair! also c) it helps muddle the difference between Wizard and Warlock. typically hoods have evil/duplicitous connotation - blur the lines! i want his long gloves and forearm wraps to have the same vibe. his neckerchief is a big help in hiding Home's seal!

his layered (loosely apple-themed) capelet (which the hood is attached to) has a nice high collar & hides the details of his loose shirt - eye embroidery! and some flowers on the shoulders but yk, mostly eyes. on one side of the shirt buttons has open eyes, the other side they're closed! there's also one big eye on his back!

his belt buckle is two halves of an apple! he wears tall thigh-high boots w/ low heels to feel Taller! he has a book-holster hooked to the back of his belt, which holds his grimoire! and he has a lil thigh-bag that has been magicked to be Bottomless and warps size! he can fit pretty much anything in there! canvases! paint! apples!

his half-skirt thing (idk what the word for it is!) is really plush, like a quilt - his capelet is the same fabric. soft, cozy. sometimes he'll use the skirt thing as a blanket in a pinch, or as a picnic placemat!

is his outfit a little Complicated? is it annoying to replicate? yes and yes. but im a maximalist at heart and Nothing But The Best for the blorbo <3 layers my beloved <3

#i know ive said it before but whenever i make an au its essentially an Exploration in a sense #and this fantasy au ~Bog Edition~ is basically me going #'so wally and his house huh. whats up with that'#and maybe im taking it a bit to the extremes #since home is pretty much warlock wally's god??? sorta? loosely??#well it literally gave wally life and a body. so.#and it also literally took the place of his heart - wally Cannot live without home #they have a fun 'we cant exist without each other now' codependent very devoted kinda unhealthy relationship #wally sometimes has to do terrible things for home #and home will do terrible things in return for wally. even when wally doesnt want them to #and they both love each other very much <3 what kind of love is it <3 fuck if i know! theyre Weird About It though #its the only dynamic an ancient lovecraftian horror & the puppet they gave life & tethered itself to can have!!!#wally wisely keeps home & his 'warlock' status a secret from his friends for as long as he can #they just dont understand his & home's bond smh #scribble salad #welcome home #wh fantasy au #gonna have to workshop barns....#i need to balance the fantasy + hes a distinguished fella + bard #hence the hat. the hat stays.#gotta find the right vest...#and then everyone else if i feel like it....#outfit design is so Grueling but i refuse to keep it simple #there have to be LAYERS it has to be IN CHARACTER i have to put ALL THE EFFORT INTO IT

I agonized over which side of the building to illustrate since it has two entrances and both of them are extremely cute, but ultimately reasoned that I lived on Lake Drive for years so this was the side of the building I had the most personal attachment to.
