Places I Have Lived, No. 12: 2024-????
I'm a homeowner now, so this series gets a new addition. Excited to go live in the woods. <3
Places I Have Lived
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In September 2021, I decided to draw my childhood home on a whim (this illustration has since been revisited). What resulted was a digital illustration that had a dynamic woodcut-and-watercolor aesthetic that I quite enjoyed, so I decided to turn it into a series and draw every place that I'd ever lived in (including my college dorm, and a friend's live-in art studio that served as kind of a halfway-house of sorts). Unexpectedly, while I worked on each of these, I was able to get into the mindset of my own past selves. There were some homes that were difficult to illustrate because of negative feelings and memories attached to them, and some that I was able to give extra loving care and attention because of their associated nostalgia. This series will be in progress as long as I keep moving and until I unknowingly find the home where I will live for the rest of my life. I am certainly not the first person to illustrate houses, but these are uniquely mine.

Happy Earth Day, earthlings.
When you see Earth Day posts from corporations today, remember that they don't care about you or the planet, and reversing or controlling climate change is not the responsibility of individuals like you and me. 💙🌎

My studio mates at Dinderbeck were kind enough to let me add a mural to their collection. I've been working on this on and off since February, and it's based off of an illustration I did back in December. If you've ever been to Dinderbeck you know its interior walls are completely covered in artwork, so it's cool to have this piece included among the greats. It was good mural practice and a good way to use up a lot of leftover paint.
Would love to put more art like this on people's walls, so hit me up if you like my style (especially if you're in West Michigan but I'll travel all over the midwest to do a mural, idc!).

Places We Have Loved: The Pyramid Scheme; Grand Rapids, MI
This has been a popular request and has been on my to-do list for a long time. It was fun to figure out how best to feature Jeff VandenBerg's mural on the side of the building, and I opted to simplify things a bit by including just the first few panels as an homage (yes, there's a window and a door there in real life and the building extends MUCH further back, but hopefully you'll forgive me for taking some artistic liberty).
Places We Have Loved is a spinoff series from Places I Have Lived (more about that here). After I ran out of my own homes to draw, I wanted to continue working in this style just for fun, so I also began illustrating some of my favorite places in Grand Rapids. As a concept, Places We Have Loved may be iconic public places, other people's homes where I've spent meaningful time, or commissions by businesses.
Prints of select places and information about commissions can be found at studiohromi.com/shop. Prints of this illustration coming soon!

Places We Have Loved: Cherie Inn; Grand Rapids, MI
I agonized over which side of the building to illustrate since it has two entrances and both of them are extremely cute, but ultimately reasoned that I lived on Lake Drive for years so this was the side of the building I had the most personal attachment to.

We must strive for no less than freedom for all 🍉
Ref used from here
As soon as I learned about the Palestinian sunbird this week, which became Palestine's national bird in 2015 after Israel failed to rename it, I knew I had to paint one. What a beautiful bird to symbolise Palestinian hope.
