Nico Di Angelo was born around 1932. the beginning of WW2 was 1939, this is probably about when he came to the USA. Do you know what else happened in 1939? Detective Comics #27, now you're probably wondering 'batcaves why does this random comic matter?' It's matters because that comic is the introduction of Detective Comics newest story, following the adventures of 'The Bat-Man'. It is fully possible for 7 year old Nico DiAngelo to have read the first few issues of Batman comics, do with this what you will.

I get people liking fics where Nico and Percy have made up and are all buddy buddy.
But their relationship is so interesting and to me, making them all buddy buddy just doesn't work. They have too much of a history.
I find it was more fun for them to not be friends, they don't trust each other, not really, not after everything. So they stay away from the elephant in the room. They team up for Capture the flag and if they have to go on another fetch quest together then fine.
But they're not friends. They'll never be able to be friends.
Sure they aren't trying to kill each other, but their ongoing "prank war" has some pranks that are nearly lethal, lethal enough that if it was for anyone else that person would get hurt. But Percy and Nico emerge with only a few scratches and the need for vengence.
You look at them and they're kinda friend shaped, but it's like fitting two puzzle pieces together that don't quite fit because even though they look just about like they should fit, they're from two separate puzzles. You can smush them together but things will be bent and there'll be something a little off. They'll never fit together perfectly, they'll never truly be friends. At least, not for a very long time.

I just think that Hades, a god he is, might not actually do everything Nico asks because there’re rules and stuff and he’s a responsible god
but at the same time, he would definitely not do anything that hurts his son, either.
Hades wouldn’t put Nico in danger if he isn’t sure that his son could take care of it. And after that he makes sure Nico heals well.
Hades wouldn’t do those that upset him. He wouldn’t lie to him (hiding, maybe, but def not lying). He asks for his consent. He respects his wishes and above all, he values his happiness. The world be damned if Hades has to jeopardize that.
Same goes to Hazel, btw. For the love of everything holy on earth, he lost Bianca, he can’t afford to let another down.
Hades has a line and that is hurting his children.

I thought a lot about the Percy Jackson books and the Harry Potter books lately.
I think that, for the first, it’s because of the new TV series, and for the latter, because of its infamous author… So, I thought about it a lot: my relationship with those books, this gut feeling that made me think about them no matter how much I changed or grew, and how the world around me changed and grew with those books. I kind of wanted to say some things about them, just to get it out of my chest, once and for all…
Harry Potter, everyone knew it. “What do you mean you haven’t read Harry Potter? Everyone has read Harry Potter!” everyone would say to me. Just like its protagonist, there was this aura around them, something that made them feel almost… holy. It was then hard to explain to people that I had seen or heard about its author only once, on Wikipedia, and upon seeing her photo thinking: “This is not a good person.” I’m not the type to like making rash judgements, but my feelings towards J.K. Rowling were something deeper, a gut feeling, something that was telling me that this woman would do no good. But she gave to charities, and she wrote an amazing book series, didn’t she? So, nobody believed me… I was right in the end. She is not evil, but she does no good.
I read the Percy Jackson series first. I did not buy the book on a whim at a bookstore when I was eight, no, my mother had actually bought The Lighting Thief first… for herself. She would nag me to read it, telling me I would love it, but like any child receiving suggestions from their parents, I didn’t want to listen to her. The first movie had come out by then, and in my eyes, Percy Jackson was just another book about popular kids doing popular kids stuff and being brave, loved, confident and… everything I wasn’t at the time. No one I could have related to. One day, my mother left the book on a chair before leaving to buy groceries, and, as if I was committing a crime, I took it and hid in my room to read it.
“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.”
First sentence in, and I knew it would be for life. Before I had realized it, I read a third of the book by the time my mother got home, searching for the book frantically until she realized where it was. She smiled to me, “Do you like it?”, “I do,” I replied, ashamed of my previous prejudices about the book. It would then become months and years of being the one to nag my mother so she would buy the next book, wait for her to finish it so I could read it myself and then… Well, at some point I stopped waiting for her to finish them to read them myself. Nico di Angelo was my favorite character, Percy Jackson, my hero, and Annabeth Chase, my role model. When I learned about the Heroes of Olympus series, I bought them the moments I saw the covers in the bookstore.
“What about Harry Potter?”
There was the question again, the holy book, the one everyone knew, and everyone had to read. There wasn’t malice, just… it seemed obvious, for everyone. But this gut feeling again… this woman would do no good. I ended up reading them. Just the first two books, actually, got bored later, went back to Percy Jackson, re-read it again. Then I finally read Harry Potter, seriously this time, like those books were parts of a study about humanity that I was making.
They were good. I couldn’t deny it. The story structure was incredible, characters? Well-written. Universe? Fascinating… Yet… I couldn’t get into it, something wasn’t right. Something wasn’t making me feel like Percy Jackson made me feel. Harry Potter wasn’t my hero like Percy was, Harry was… and annoyance. Someone I had to go through to progress in the story. I didn’t dislike him per se, but he just wasn’t someone I felt I had a connection with.
Years later, I think I understand why. I understand why Percy Jackson, and not Harry Potter. Why Nico di Angelo was my favorite character, and why I couldn’t even remember the names of the Harry Potter characters. And why I had this gut feeling…
Harry Potter… didn’t have the anger that Percy Jackson had.
I realized it upon hearing the Percy Jackson musical, there was something the books that I only realized then… God, they were… full of angst, traumatizing pasts, and… anger! “Mom and Dad are too busy being gods”, “I just wanted to be a good kid!” I never realized those were actual parts of the books. And then, I did realize it. It was, it even was why I loved the Percy Jackson books actually.
Percy wasn’t just funny, he was… relatable. He was angry. He was surrounded by incompetent adults who were established as being incompetent. He was loved by his mother, but hated at school for no other reason than the fact that he was different. He wanted to live his life and then he became the hero of a quest he never asked to be a part of. And he knows it.
That’s what mattered in Percy Jackson, Percy knows he is not treated right.
I knew I wasn’t treated right.
I was angry. I was surrounded by incompetent adults. I was loved by my parents but hated by my sibling and my classmates because I wasn’t like them. I was asked to grow up, to just take it and leave the others out of the problems they had put me in, act like an adult when I was… When I was only a child. And I knew it.
Meanwhile, in Harry Potter… Adults were incompetent, but no one would have dare even acknowledge it. School was an awesome place where you would have friends and learn amazing new things. The world is unjust, but who cares? It’s magical. And you want it to stay this way, right? Harry Potter was glorifying a life that had transformed me into a cynical depressed twelve years old whose greatest wish was to jump out of the classroom’s window and die.
A life that had taken everything away from me, a system that had took everything away from me, who took the child in me and threw it in a dumpster before setting it on fire. Harry Potter was mocking me, from behind the doors of this system he could thrive in. He was enjoying it, alongside all the others, who, as good accomplice, would only watch the thousands of kids who just like me, could not express their anger at this world… But Percy Jackson would throw himself in the dumpster, he would grab our arms and pull us out, shout at us to get a grip, to be angry, to hate this world we asked nothing of, to ask for love, to ask to be allowed to be different…
I think that’s the thing Rick Riordan understood as he wrote for children, for bookworms more specifically: that we were angry at our inability to do anything. We were angry, not because we wanted to be adults, but because we weren’t allowed to be children. It doesn’t matter if we are in a place that finally accepts us, it’s not enough, it won’t take away the years of ignorance and suffering. We want change. We want respect. We want love. We want that, not just for the lonely child we used to be, but for all the other lonely children who cried alone in their room because they had no one to rely on.
Harry Potter told me “If you find a place to thrive in this pre-established system, isn’t that enough?”
Percy Jackson told me “Screw the hierarchy, screw the pre-established systems and worldview, screw this world who treated us like we deserved nothing… Let’s make something greater. Let’s make something everyone will be able to thrive in.”
The Harry Potter books were great escapism, but the Percy Jackson books made me want to live.

Thoughts on Percy Jackson and the Olympians, episode 3:
(Disclaimer: I loved everything about the episode except, mostly, Annabeth herself. So if you're going to get offended because someone doesn't like the same fictional character, because that's what Annabeth is, and if you're going to try to turn the argument into something else, please don't bother reading.)
So. This is a bit difficult because I feel very conflicted/wary about what's to come, mostly because Disney has not been historically good at girl power or badass female characters. Let me just say this; while I used to love the CW's Flash, it quickly went downhill when the Flash took a backseat to his own show for the CW's half-assed "girl power" message. I fear the same might happen here.
Let me be very clear about something. It makes sense why Annabeth would seem like the more formidable opponent at the start of the story. She was more or less that in the first two books because, not only is she the daughter of the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy, but she'd spent a lot of her life training for quests, studying about the gods, and she just knew more than Percy did. I didn't like Movie Annabeth for most of the first film either for the same reasons I'm about to list below, please keep that in mind.
My issue will come here; if Percy starts to take a backseat to his own show just so we can highlight how great and awesome Annabeth is and girl power rules and whatever, I'm going to be very, very miffed. Again, it's fair for me to worry about this now because Disney is all tell and no show when it comes to women. Just like they did with Marvel, just like they did with the most recent Disney Princesses, it's more important to them to show how woke they are instead of caring about the actual stories they tell. And I'm Middle-Eastern, so don't even try any of that self-righteous white woman racial crap with me, okay?
I know I'm saying what a lot of people probably think but aren't allowed to say, but -- call me crazy -- I want the show based on the Percy Jackson books to focus on Percy Jackson. To be honest, I've never loved ANY of Rick Riordan's female characters, save for Ana from Daughter of the Deep, as well as the other female characters in that book, but that's not even in the Percy Jackson world, so it doesn't count. And I ONLY say this now because, again, Disney has SUCKED with their female characters. It's all pandering and nothing but pandering.
The first book especially always frustrated me with the way Grover never really seemed to defend Percy against Annabeth's snobby behavior, so this aligns fine. I'm not really saying anything against the character either (not yet), as this frustration with how unfair and snobby she is towards Percy very much aligns with the book. I guess I was just hoping that since I always hated Annabeth in the books and she was actually likable in the second episode, that maybe the show would be better about her portrayal. I was actually thinking how cute they would be as a couple in the second episode, but now? I'm kind of back where I was with the books, I don't see why she deserves him, not yet.
Much like Grover was in the episode, I was just looking at a lot of her behavior as Really? The guy had NO reason to invite you on this quest, you NEEDED him to pick you, and you still act like he's the idiot for caring about his mom and not knowing anything about this world that he's just found out about, and it's so freaking entitled, I --
I've been part of the Roswell, New Mexico fandom since season 1, and I know just how ridiculous people get when you DARE criticize a character who HAPPENS to be played by a black actress. I don't give a crap. I'm critiquing the CHARACTER here, and I'm disappointed, not with her, but the writing itself. It's too soon to tell, I know, but I do hope Disney is better about Annabeth's character than the books were, because I saw Book Annabeth as rude, selfish, and unfair, it bothered me that everyone in the story still idolized her despite how toxic her behavior was (save for Percy, but just in the beginning, and then he was fine with her hitting him and calling him stupid all the time), and I saw glimpses of that in episode 3, so I'm hoping for better.
Also, that whole, What are you afraid of? conversation felt so weird and forced. They JUST started the quest, Percy is throwing in suggestions, Annabeth treats him like he's stupid for it, and then demands to know why he's scared of who he is, and I'm like ?? What warranted that question? He hasn't used his powers yet, he hasn't refused to use his powers yet or talk about his father or anything, so why would he seem afraid of who he is? It just makes no sense.
Honestly? At this point, I just feel bad for Leah because Annabeth is a very difficult character to make likable in my eyes, and it's made worse when the writing won't allow her to be any better.
Aside from that, I really did love the episode a lot. I wish Grover had done more to defend Percy in the beginning, but he did the same thing in the book and he eventually did step in. Medusa was actually great. I hated the actress's character in the Flash, so I was wary, but she really knocked it out of the park. I love some of the extra details they put in, like Percy giving her a chance because of his mom and kindness (fatal flaw, if you know you know), I LOVED the consensus song, and YES! I was SO worried they wouldn't have Percy send Medusa's head to Olympus, but they did and he was perfect and it was AMAZING! When Annabeth said that what Medusa said isn't what happened, I would've liked an explanation of what actually did happen. Then again, it feels like there's a bit too much exposition already, to be honest. Like there were more creative ways to explain Thalia, there were more creative ways to explain Annabeth and Luke finding camp, and I don't know if it's because I've memorized the books at this point, but it feels like so much of the episode is just dedicated to explaining things that don't really need explanation or could be saved for later to show through flashbacks or something. I don't know, just more creative than standing and sitting there while someone explains everything.
It works great sometimes, like with Sally and Percy, but other moments just feel very... exposition-y.
I love this show. It's the highlight of my week. I maintain that we are getting the best possible adaptation. It's just because I love this story so much and it's so sacred to me that I can't help but critique. I don't think the books are flawless (i.e. the female characters), so it stands to reason that I won't find the show completely flawless either. Is it still sacred to me? Absolutely. Percy Jackson has always been too important not to nitpick, I think.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians spoiler for the show/book:
Episode 1:
So I really liked how they began it how the book opened, that was a really nice touch!
I also really liked how we saw Percy growing up and seeing things, focusing in the mechanical rhino was a nice set up for the second book. I also enjoyed how you saw the subtle training, like from Grover with the cards.
Speaking of Grover though, now, I won't focus too heavily on differences from the book and show, as I know there needs to be differences, but a huge part of Grover is his legs/walking difficulties, so Grover walking fine in shorts? I disliked that.
Another thing I disliked was Mrs. Dodds, she didn't take Percy somewhere private, Chiron just gave Percy Riptide, and Percy didn't have this awakening battle with her, it was just played off as an accident.
Two other character changes I disliked were Gabe and Sally. Gabe is no where near as bad, he is kinda timid, Percy isn't shown to be scared of him, he is way too accommodating, and kinda the main point of his character that is crucial to him, his smell, isn't noted at all. Then yes, Sally. She was just off the whole time. She shows herself being vulnerable in front of Percy, something she never does, she stands up to Gabe and back chats him, she gets angry, also she is way too open and transparent when her whole point is trying to keep everything secret to protect Percy, her character was just off.
30 minutes was way too short. They have to cram so much exposition and such into the episode, at one point they explain like 6 things back to back! I thought it coulda been paced out. Which to combine two points, Sally tells Percy everything, which again, she doesn't want to do, but also this means Percy sorta discovers nothing in Camp Half-Blood which ruins why that place was so incredible, I also think it woulda helped the first episode being less expo heavy having Percy discover everything at the camp.
Last thing I wanna say is Sally really wasn't that sad about losing Percy. Like she eventually gets choked up, but in the book, it clearly explains why Sally kept Percy, why she kept everything secret, and why she doesn't want him going to Camp Half-Blood. But until the final moment she shows almost no sadness about losing Percy, and there's just nothing to show her keeping everything a secret or wanting to be selfish in keeping Percy.
Episode 2:
So I really liked the detail of the beaded necklaces! That was a nice touch, the show was full of small details like that, like Luke's scar and such!
Another thing I like is the series includes Clarisse! It is so nice seeing her character unlike in the movie!
I really did not like Luke telling Percy about Thalia/Annabeth. In the book this is a huge thing and a huge mystery, also, nobody wants to talk about it as it hurts too much, but in the show Luke just says it all. I did notice this generally, all these quietly painful moments don't exist, the show just screams everything and takes away all the characters pains.
I love that they included Annabeth's hat! Again, vital thing that is nice to see included this time!
So, eh, I wanna word this carefully. I do not care at all that they changed the characters, as long as they have the personality and the relationship, who cares. However, one thing I found lacking was the lack of the Gods in the kids. In the book, it's sort of a big thing that they all share similar traits, so not only does this help you/Percy identify characters, but it shows who is related and how to separate characters. But in the show, they've just done nothing to the characters, so you have no idea who is who or what God they belong to, I kinda wish Annabeth's eyes were grey, or that Hermes' kids have upturned eye brows, or that Percy's eyes were green. They are meant to have a single same parent, biology dictates genes, I wish there was more shown to connect them to their parents and each other.
I really like the detail of Clarisse's electric spear, and the fact she made the comment about losing dessert privelages!
Another change I disliked is Percy discovering his power. Again, throughout the book there are SSSSOOOO many things hinting towards Poseidon, and one of those things is Percy being drawn to the water, being drawn to his dad. So the fact he has no intention of going near the water, noticing he is stronger in the water, and Annabeth just pushes him in it? Poseidon proudly claims him after he uses the water to show his power! It just was lacking.
Then the final thing I quite disliked, Grover telling Percy about his mum. Again, a huge secret pain is that Percy keeps it hidden the reason he accepts the quest is to save his mum, as he thinks he can get her from the Underworld. So needing to be told he can get her, that she isn't dead, and Grover tells him this? Again, they took a quiet pain and just screamed it.
There were other things like Percy having Riptide, Mr. D sorta solely being played for laughs and not showing his power/danger. Like, there were other changes that bothered me but again, I accept the show can't be entirely faithful, but the ones I mentioned just bothered me a lot more. I think the art style of the credits is super cool, I love the characters are more age appropriate, I know Rick likes this a lot more and is more involved, and there were positives. I just, yeah, wished pacing and dumbing down were different. The minotaur looked cool
