The one in the train
About the series: What are you about to read is a series in a sitcom manner. This means the chapters are going to be only briefly connected to each other and you don’t have to read them all (you can start in the middle if you want and you will still understand what’s going on). Just as in sitcoms majority of the stories will have the beginning and the end (something like oneshots). Think of it as if you were watching Friends that I copied the title from.
This series was a request (Could you possibly do a hogwarts au with a slytherin reader and Loki or make it a series with different mcu characters?) from anon and as a hopeless potterhead I had to do it.
AU: Hogwarts
Pairing: Various (for now: Loki x Reader, Tony Stark x Reader, Steve Rogers x Reader)
Chapter summary: September is here and it’s your final year at Hogwarts. You not only meet your best friends at the platform, but it looks like your crush has finally taken interest in you. Could it be the year?
Chapter warninigs: none
Chapter word count: 2000
A/N: Tag list is opened. LEAVE ME FEEDBACK, IT’S WHAT I NEED. Also I want you to create this series with me! Got any idea what can happen to our pals? Tell me! Let's make this series as awesome as we can, together

You stood on your tiptoes, trying to find your friends in the horrible crowd on the platform. Your parents already left, hurrying to work and you were left alone with the truck.
“Where the hell are they…?” You murmured and began to slowly walk around the platform.
You peaked at the clock. The train would leave in twenty minutes and you still couldn’t find anyone. You saw Steve and Bucky and waved to them. Steve still looked so damn good…
Last year during one of your private parties boys mixed a few potions together with butterbeer and Steve was unlucky, or maybe lucky enough to lose a challenge and drink the mix. He turned from asthmatic and skinny boy to a muscular sex god. You even dated for a couple of weeks until his huffflepuffy behavior started to annoy you.
“Looking for me?”
You almost jumped when you heard Loki’s voice whispering to your ear. You turned around and hugged him with laughter.
“Here you are!” You moved at the length or your arms, still holding him. “Your hair is longer.”
He shrugged and smiled.
“Maybe a little. You always said I would look better if-“
“Nat!” You shouted and waved, interrupting him. Red-haired girl turned and smiled when she saw you two, and quickly kissed her mother goodbye before running towards you with her trolley.
“I missed you so much, guys!” She hugged you both at the same time. “How are you?”
“Fine now that I’m with you!” You laughed and pulled her for yet another hug. “The summer was awful, my parents were away all the time-“
“Oh my God,” Nat interrupted you and held your arm tightly.
“What is it?” Loki turned to the direction she was looking but only furrowed.
“Y/N, don’t look, but Tony Stark is checking you out.”
You widened your eyes.
“What?!” You squeaked. “How do I look?”
“Lovely-“
“Dumb.” Loki murmured and you hit his arm. “I just don’t see why you want him to like you so much, I can smell your desperation.”
You had a crush on Tony Stark since fifth grade. He was the smartest, the coolest guy you’ve ever met. He played Quidditch, had the best results in OWLs, had ridiculously rich parents and had perfect hair. His mother was a witch, but his father was a muggle. Not an ordinary muggle, of course, but one of the most brilliant ones. He knew about wizards’ society long before he met his wife, he worked for the muggle government and the ministry. Tony was just as genius as his father and mixed muggle technology with magic. If only he wasn’t Gryffindor…
You dared to look at him. He was talking with Clint, leaning nonchalantly against the pillar with his messy hair and round glasses. He was indeed looking at your direction, but there was no way he was looking at you.
“What part of don’t look you are unable to understand?” Nat hissed.
“He’s not even looking at me,” you murmured, disappointed.
But then Tony’s eyes met yours and he slowly eyed you from your shiny black shoes to the top of your head. And winked. You couldn’t force yourself not to smile but was strong enough not to squeak.
“This could be the year, Nat.” You smiled at her and she widened her eyes before squirming.
“The year?” She held your hands.
“Will you tell me what are you talking about?” Loki sighed, his eyes travelling from you to Nat.
She fixed her ponytail and peaked at you knowingly. You rolled your eyes.
“That’s just girly thing,” you tried to avoid answering and hoped he would let it go.
“I’ve already heard enough about your periods to not be afraid of the ‘girly things’.” He raised his eyebrows.
“Then go and find yourself some male friends.”
“I already have Nat.” She hit his arm and he giggled. “Can you just tell me what the deal with the year is?” He waved his fingers and rolled his eyes.
“The year she’ll lose her virginity-“
“Yeah, speak louder, they can’t hear you in Buckingham Palace yet!” You hissed at her.
“Wait, wait, wait.” Loki turned you to himself. “You don’t mean with Stark, do you? He barely looked at you and you already plan your wedding?”
“I planned our wedding two years ago.”
He just blinked a few times, you could see how hope in you slowly disappeared in his eyes.
“You can do better.”
“There is no better than Tony Stark, I can assure you that.” You held your truck and took a few steps in the direction of the train, but Loki didn’t follow you, so you turned to him. He looked somewhat betrayed, his arms crossed on his chest. “Oh, come on. You are absolutely perfect as well.” Your words seemed to cheer him a bit and Nat pushed him to move. “We need to find a free compartment, I don’t want to ride with someone I don’t know.”
You walked into the train, fighting your way through first and second graders, searching for free compartment. You found it in the middle of the train and heavily sat on the seat. Loki and Nat followed you.
“You know what, I can’t believe you’re still crushing on him,” Loki said after you’ve all settled.
“Can you let it go already?” You sighed.
“And what will happen if you actually start dating and then you would have to kick his ass in Quidditch? You are both Captains of your teams.”
“Then I’ll kick his ass and make it up to him later. Besides, we played against each other dozens of times.”
“Are you jealous?” Nat asked, leaning to Loki.
He furrowed.
“I’m not jealous, what for? I just don’t like him, he’s a douche and a Griffindor. She’s done already too much socializing with other houses when she dated Rogers.”
The door to your compartment opened and Loki’s brother, Thor, leaned on the frame. You liked the Scandinavian nature of the Odinson brothers. Their parents moved to England briefly before the boys got their letters.
“Go away,” Loki said, not letting his brother make a word.
“Everywhere else is full and there is only the three of you in here.”
“We don’t want you nor your Gryffindor friends in here-“
“We do!” Nat sat straighter and poked you with her elbow. You looked up and saw Tony and Clint behind Thor, waiting for you to let them in.
“Yes! I mean sure. Come in. Whatever.” You tried to act cool, but failed miserably.
Loki sighed and sat next to you, freeing the seats in front of you for the boys. You wrapped your arm around Nat’s and leaned to her ear, so no one else could hear what you were saying.
“If I do something stupid just kick me.”
“Got it.” She nodded with a smirk.
“So, Y/N,” Thor started when the train moved, “I’ve heard you were made a Quidditch Captain this year.”
You nodded, surprised he tried to talk to you. You weren’t really fond of him, mostly because of Loki’s influence.
“That’s true.”
Tony made himself more comfortable in the corner and adjusted his glasses. You weren’t exactly sure if he needed them, because he wasn’t always wearing them, but he looked so hot.
“You think your team can beat mine?” He asked with a cheeky smile.
“Oh, I am sure my team can beat yours.” You tugged your hair behind your ear. “You won’t be hugging that cup for long.”
He raised his eyebrows, but the smile on his face was the same.
“You say so?”
You smiled slightly.
“Your team is uncoordinated and you just lost your best two players. They graduated, didn’t they?”
“And you think your team is perfect?”
“They were far from being prefect last year, but now I am the Captain. We’ll win that cup.”
“She’s sassy,” he cheekily smiled at you again and shamelessly eyed you once more.
“Anything off the trolley, dears?” The chubby lady opened the door and peaked through.
“Yes!” It seemed like everyone shouted and moved to look if she had anything new.
*
You were lying on the seats, your head on Loki’s thighs and legs on Natasha’s, lazily eating the jellies. Everyone was bored of the road since you’ve used things to talk about within twenty minutes. Looked like your romance didn’t work out well today. And Loki was pissed off by the presence of the Gryffindors, so naturally he didn’t want to talk to you, it was your fault that they were in the compartment, after all. Even if he was mad at you he was unwittingly playing with your hair while reading his book. Tony was peaking at you again and you felt like you needed cold shower.
“Nat.” You tugged her hand. “We should change in our robes.”
“We have some time-“
“Nat.” She rolled her eyes and nodded.
“You can change here, we don’t mind.” Clint smirked and received a hit with a chocolate frog from Nat. Straight in his face.
You got up, took the robes from your bag and dragged Natasha out of the compartment.
“What should I do, Nat?” You asked her, slightly in panic. “He’s sitting right in front of me and we have nothing to talk about besides Quidditch.”
“Maybe he’s simply not the one?” She walked into the bathroom and you followed her. “Perhaps he looks good and that’s just it?”
“It can’t be!” You cried.
“Then maybe give yourselves some time. You will eventually find similar interests, this was what? The fourth time you’ve ever talked to him? Relax.”
“Maybe you’re right…” You put your shirt and skirt on. “Maybe I am being a little overdramatic.”
She adjusted her tie and fixed her fringe.
“When he’ll see you in that new skirt he’ll go crazy, believe me,” she said, eyeing you.
“I bought it at Madame Malkin’s, I asked her to make it slightly shorter… I looked terrible in the knee-length,” you sighed and wiped some invisible dust from the skirt. “It’s a pity we didn’t go to Diagon Alley together this year.”
“I know.” She took your hand. “And it’s our last year! Can you believe it?”
You shook your head.
“I’m going to miss Hogwarts so much. Miss seeing you and Loki every day!”
“You know, now that you mentioned him-“
Someone knocked on the door fiercely.
“Get out! Others have to pee as well!”
You rolled your eyes and grabbed the clothes before leaving. Some Ravenclaw girl stormed inside, murmuring.
“So what were you saying about Loki?”
“Well, he’s a bit grumpy today, isn’t he?”
“Isn’t he always when his brother is around?”
She shook his head.
“I feel like we ruined his mood when we talked about Tony. I just don’t know why?”
“He just doesn’t like him, that’s all.” You shrugged. He never liked Tony, even though they were never really mean to each other.
“I think there’s more to that.” She opened the door to the compartment and let you in first.
The boys were already dressed and were talking about the feast and how hungry they were, and Loki was still reading his book, completely silent. You sat next to him and put your chin on his shoulder to see what he was reading. The book was in Norse and you couldn’t understand a word.
“Everything okay?” You murmured to his ear, so no one would hear your conversation.
“Perfectly fine.” His voice was cold and you wrapped your arms around his, leaning closer.
“I can see that it’s not. You won’t fool me, not after six years.”
“God, why are you so clingy?” He sighed, but didn’t do anything to move away from your grasp. “I’m just hungry.”
You looked out of the window, at the woods you knew so well. The train was slowing down. You couldn’t stop yourself and smiled when you saw the blurry shape of the castle before you.
You were back. You were at Hogwarts.

Nerves were coursing through your body as you knocked on the door before you. Clenching and unclenching your fists, you tried to keep them from shaking too much. The nervousness surprised you and made you take a deep breath in order to calm yourself. You wondered why this was so difficult, there was nothing to it really. All you were doing was returning something he had lost. He’d be happy with that, wouldn’t he? After all it was a family heirloom. He’d be missing it.
It had been three days since you all came together to watch the wedding video. Three days since you had been trying to come up with a reason to visit Bucky. And finally, Natasha had come to the rescue, offering up a wonderful chance. During the clean up the day after, she had come across Bucky’s watch, the one his grandfather had gifted him at his high school graduation. And she had not been able to bring it by yet. Hopefully, he would be too happy with the return of his watch, that he wouldn’t wonder how you came in possession of it. Then again, there really wasn’t anything strange about Natasha asking you. It just felt weird because you had been searching for a reason.
And yet, as soon as he opened the door, you began to babble. Non-stop.
Soon after your initial knock, the door had opened to reveal a slightly dishevelled Bucky. Immediately you worried that perhaps he had not been alone and you were interrupting. Which had set in motion the mind less rambling, fuelled by the worry that he had in fact moved on from you. Quick to apologise, you turned to walk away again, the watch completely forgotten on the bottom of your bag.
“You’re not interrupting anything,” his voice halted your hasty retreat, his words pulling you back from the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions you had so easily fallen into. Turning back, you realised Bucky had taken a few steps into the hallway, as if to follow you. He seemed utterly confused by your reaction and you could feel your cheeks colouring with the rush of blood. You offered a pointed look and waved at his messy appearance and he chuckled as he looked down to his half buttoned shirt. Running a hand through his locks he looked back at you with a shrug.
“Right,” he said with a smile on his face, “I’ve been packing and I was looking for something,” he explained and waved his arm in the direction of his room, now visible through the open door. Compared to the state of his room, Bucky looked rather put together.
“Shit,” you exclaimed and began rummaging through your bag, “That’s why I’m here.” You pulled out the watch and held it out to him, mentally slapping yourself for almost forgetting the entire reason you had come by.
“Are you leaving?” You asked, nervously gnawing on your bottom lip, as he happily took the timepiece from your outstretched hand. He shook his head and invited you inside for some tea.
Putting on the kettle, Bucky explained that he had received a call the day before from Wanda’s brother, Pietro. Through Wanda, Pietro had heard that Bucky was looking for a more permanent place to stay, just as his roommate got engaged and was moving out. Sipping your tea, you listened intently, finally able to relax again and silence the worry in your head.
“Need a hand with the moving?” You finally asked as he finished his explanation.
“Thanks, but I’m sure I can manage the two cases I own,” he chuckled and you smiled, realising that he obviously thought you had thrown all his stuff out after he left. It was probably time to inform him that you hadn’t. Wondering just how that slipped your mind before.
“True, but maybe it would be good to have help with everything that’s in storage,” you countered, smiling again when he regarded you with confusion written all over his face.
“I kept hoping you’d come back,” You confessed with a blush, “Though, truth be told, I am not responsible for all that’s in it.” You explained, while rummaging through your bag once more and getting a key out. Handing it to him, you gave him the address to the storage unit.
“Who else is responsible?” He wondered and you explained that when his parents had sold their house, his mother had added boxes to it. You could only imagine the wonderful things that had still been at their home by that point. His childhood bed, his old posters and who knew what else. Winnifred Barnes wasn’t one to throw things out and you hadn’t had the heart to do it for her.
“So I might finally get my action man back,” Bucky joked.
“I think that might not have been in your house to begin with,” his joke had prompted your confession and he barked out a laugh that you could only match. So many fights had been fought over that doll when the two of you had been kids. Many threats that neither one would play with the other ever again had been spoken, only to be forgotten the following day.
“So you did steal it!” Bucky accused, laughter still clear in his voice.
“Barbie needed a man,” you defended your six year old self with a bright smile.
“You had Ken!” Bucky exclaimed, trying to keep a serious face and failing miserably.
“Ken wasn’t as cool” you shrugged simply and Bucky just shook his head as he placed his now empty mug back on the desk next to him. He sat down next to you on the bed and wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you into him.
“God, I’ve missed you,” he whispered and kissed your temple. Words evaded you right then and all you could do was lean in to him and hum in agreement. It felt so good to have him back in your life. After all he had been your friend years before he was ever your boyfriend.
***
Two days later, you and Bucky made your way to the storage unit, ready to search through the boxes to figure out which he would want to bring to his new place. To the best of your recollection, there had been about 15 boxes in there, but his mother also had a key and as soon as the door opened it was clear she had made good use of that. Shocked, the two of you looked at the racks that lined the walls and were full of boxes, while the stacks on the floor completely hid the cement look that it had. With just one look, you decided this was not a two man job.
Pulling out your phone, you quickly opened the group app that Bucky had recently been added to again and sent out an sos to the rest. In it, you quickly explained the situation and added a picture of the storage unit to fill in the blanks and convince them of your plight. You already knew Wanda was out of town for a family weekend, and this last minute it would only be logical that others had plans as well. Still, you took a chance to ask.
Maria and Sam quickly replied that they too were out and unable to be back in time, though they were happy to help moving him in the following weekend. And not even thirty minutes later Steve, Natasha and Clint pulled up in the parking lot, laughing loudly at the sight before them. Bucky was lazily searching through a box filled with his childhood toys, happily rediscovering it all. While you stood next to him, slightly exasperated and wondering just how you would get through all these boxes in a timely fashion.
“Okay,” Steve began as the laughter subsided, “Three different stacks; one to bring back home, one to throw away and one stack for things you want to keep here,” true to his nature, Steve formed a clear plan for everyone to follow.
“Sure, but how do we make those decisions?” You wondered out loud, giving Bucky a pointed look. If he took as long with every single box as he had with the first one, the day would not be long enough.
“I’ll help him sort through everything,” Natasha offered and you smiled, knowing you could trust Nat to speed up the process exponentially. Natasha never had any qualms about throwing things out. She was always rather practical about it. Which was why the apartment she and Clint shared was always pristine. There was never any clutter.
“Steve and Y/n will get you the boxes, sort them by whatever is in them and I’ll help until there is a load to take to the trash,” Clint joined in and with the agreement of everyone, the three of you set out to make the first stacks. Soon the space was filled with talking, laughter and banter, teasing and reminiscing.
At some point Natasha had asked Bucky how he was paying for everything and he explained that he had been living on his savings the past few weeks, but thanks to Sam, he would soon begin a new job. The job was at the veteran centre that Sam worked at and would be mostly administrative, not something Bucky had done before but he was perfectly okay with that. Natasha even opted that perhaps at some point in the future, Bucky could help others with his experience and Bucky blushed, telling her he wasn’t ready for that just yet. They all agreed that Bucky would be a catch for the other veterans and were happy that Sam had given him a heads up about the vacancy.
Bucky went on to tell them that the interview process had been absolutely nerve-wracking. Though it had been a good experience and he didn’t need to explain his trauma, or his arm. They had only asked him about his relevant past jobs and his work for the army in broad strokes. There had been zero pressure to talk about anything he didn’t want to share. You were happy that he had such a positive experience. Seemed like life was looking up for him.
After a while, you began to notice that Steve repeatedly checked his watch and finally you asked him why. He was reluctant to speak, though the blush on his cheeks told you plenty already. After some light teasing from Clint, he finally confessed that he had a date that evening and would have to leave by 16.30 at the latest. Clint was quick to add that Steve would not just be going on any date, but a second date. Clint’s smirk told you that he had been sitting on this piece of information for a while and had been dying to share.
“So the first one was a success then, what’s her name?” You asked with a smile, genuinely happy for your friend.
“Sharon,” his hand was scratching the back of his neck and his eyes trained on his feet, the small blush on his cheeks extended to his neck now. Bucky gently smacked his shoulder with a smile and both you and Natasha gushed over his reaction.
“We’ll see where this goes,” Steve said, trying to tone down the excitement of his friends a little. His last few dates had not been very successful and you understood his hesitation. Walking past him, you squeezed his hand and grabbed a new box, ready for the conversation to be steered away from him. Finally you called everyone back to work, since Steve only had a little more than an hour to go. This seemed to work for a moment or two, until Clint suddenly started laughing softly. You knew right then and there that his favourite pastime was about to commence. Teasing.
“Remember when he was dating Lisa?” Clint’s shoulders were shaking with the contained laughter as he spoke those words.
Steve scoffed and tried to offer his friend a stern look, though the corners of his mouth were twitching. You and Natasha could not help but break out laughing as you thought back to the poor girl. Lisa had been so overwhelmed by the friendships in their group and the shared history that was between them. Instead of embracing his friends, she had become insecure. Especially Steve’s relationship with other women was a sore subject for Lisa and she had quickly gotten a little petty over it. It had been years since Lisa had left their life and everyone laughed about it now, but at the time the mere mention of her name was enough to sour the mood.
“Or his little fling with Maria?” Natasha added laughing, bringing them all the way back to their high school years, when the two friends had thought there was more to their relationship. It had not been pretty.
“I was certain they’d kill each other before the year was over,” Bucky chuckled, as he closed another box and Natasha placed it on the pile that Bucky would be taking with him to his new place.
As much as Maria and Steve loved each other, then and now, there was no room for two captains in one relationship. Something had to give. Luckily, they had been able to figure that out before their friendship had been damaged beyond repair.
“Or Sabine?” Clint added fuel to the fire, teasingly winking at Steve.
“Do we have to go through all of them?” Steve asked with a whine, causing everyone to laugh.
“No, we don’t,” Natasha said, taking pity on Steve, “We can talk about Natalia instead,” she added with a wink and Steve laughed loudly, while Clint’s face fell at the mention of his ex-girlfriend.
“Now, that girl was a trip,” Bucky jumped in, his loud laughter joining that of the others.
Natalia had been a daredevil, ready to take everyone along on her destructive path with her. She had been impulsive and a little crazy, though there were some good memories there. At least for the group. Clint didn’t remember her quite as fondly and when he tried to break it off, she had exploded on him. Apparently, three months was enough for her to bank all her future plans on him and she did not take kindly to him walking away.
“It’s a wonder we didn’t give up on love all together,” Natasha joked, opening another box. Everyone chuckled in agreement. They sure had some wild experiences in their combined past. Although your personal dating life had always been rather consistent. Before Bucky, there had been two guys you had kissed. But other than that, it was very uneventful. Not until Bucky’s accident and the subsequent break up.
“But look where we ended up,” Clint finally said in a sickeningly sweet voice, walking closer to Natasha. She batted her eyes at him, pretending to swoon.
“Be still, my heart,” she whispered dramatically and allowed herself to fall forward into the arms of her husband. You laughed loudly at their antics and shook your head as you climbed on an old discarded chair to reach the boxes on higher shelves.
“I just hope she’s nice, Steve” Natasha added with a smile as she stood straight again and everyone jumped in to agree with her. Steve smiled thankfully and the conversation finally truly steered away from his love life. Natasha put Clint to work and he began loading the first stack of boxes that were to be thrown out, in the trunk of your car.
As you grabbed a box from the highest shelf, the chair beneath your feet wobbled and an unattractive yelp escaped you. With the box in hand, raised a little above your head, all you could do was to try and keep your balance. Naturally, if you hadn’t been so scared to fall, you would have thought of putting the box down. Unfortunately that kind of thinking was lost to you.
Luckily, before worry could fully take a hold of you, two hands were placed firmly on your waist to steady you. The sudden chill on one side told you it was Bucky even before you could look down. Your stomach flipped as you glanced passed the box and looked at his smiling face, barely hearing him as he spoke; ‘I got you’.
Reaching over Bucky’s head, Steve took the box from your hands and now free of the weight of it you place your hands on Bucky’s shoulders. Carefully, you stepped down from the still unstable chair. He didn’t let go of your waist, nor did he step back and the close proximity quickly fogged up your brain.
Caught in the moment, you stared deeply into his eyes, feeling Bucky’s arms shift and his hands landing in the small of your back. He kept staring at you with that beautiful smile playing on his lips, his eyes shifting from your eyes to your lips and back. Your breath hitched in your throat and your heart was hammering in your chest. The air between you was thick with tension as you licked your lips, his head was moving closer and you were certain he was going to kiss you.
And that was the exact moment a loud crash broke the electricity that had been building in the short time that his hands had been on you. Shocked, you whipped your head to the left, towards the origin of the sound and found Natasha holding a box that was missing its bottom and its content. The grimace of her face told you that she knew exactly what she had interrupted. With a sigh, you turned back to Bucky, who was still standing close. And though his eyes were still boring into yours, he had now removed his hands from your body. The magic had been broken, the moment had passed.

Catch Up Here
Summary: Bucky and Y/N have been fairly successful at keeping their relationship hidden from the rest of the Avengers. That is… until Nat walks into the kitchen one night and finds Bucky kissing Y/N. While Y/N is relieved that their relationship is out in the open it soon becomes more complicated than she could have ever imagined.
Author’s Notes: Thanks to the lovely @melconnor2007 for the request. Holy mother of confrontations.

I felt the couch shift slightly as someone sat beside me. I immediately knew who it was, and I was happy to act like I was sleeping until the end of time to avoid him. “Y/N,” Bucky whispered softly as he placed his hand on my back. I stiffened at the contact.
“Don’t,” I snapped as I sat up and looked at him. I could tell it was nearing the early dawn hours by the soft yellow light that flooded through the windows.
“Please doll,” he whispered as he placed his hand back in his lap. “I didn’t ask for her to be there. I told her to leave right before you came in,” he explained – desperation dripping from his voice.
“Don’t you get it?” I laughed as I hastily wiped tears away from my eyes. “You did ask for it, Bucky. You slept with her and kept it a secret before breaking it off…” I paused for a moment before turning to him. “Did you even really break it off or were you seeing her when you started spending time with me?” The words sounded much more accusatory than I had meant for them to be.
Bucky blinked for a moment – shocked at the words that had come out of my mouth – before anger flashed across his face. “For Christ’s sake, Y/N! If you would just let me explain what happened!” he answered, exasperated, as he slammed his fist onto the couch.
“I think I can sum it up quite nicely. You fucked my best friend, and kept it a secret from everyone on the team. You then broke it off with her— knowing that she had feelings for you, and began pursuing me. You then did the exact same thing to me,” I muttered bitterly as I looked anywhere but at him.
“Except I didn’t break it off with you – you ran away. Off to some place that I couldn’t find, and refused to talk to anyone. And then when I called to apologize you told me it’s over, and hung up. Let’s not forget about the sister I never knew existed.” Bucky was becoming more agitated by the minute as he struggled to reign in his emotions.
“I didn’t tell you about her because I was trying to protect her!” I shouted as I angrily pushed myself off the couch.
“And why won’t you believe me when I tell you the same thing?” he asked as with a sad sigh. His anger had deflated and he was grappling for words as he ran his hands through his hair nervously. The sight of him looking so helpless and confused disarmed me and I felt my own anger ebb. All the things that Steve had confided in me about Bucky’s happiness and subsequent withdrawal after I had left came flooding back. I sat down beside him softly.
“When did you start having nightmares again?” I asked quietly. In the months that we had been together he rarely had nightmares, and even when he did they were no where close to what he had had tonight.
“Since you left,” he responded just as quietly.
“I’m sorry I left. I know it wasn’t the right thing to do. I should have stayed and talked to you…. I missed you,” I added as I rested my hand over his.
“Then nothing else matters. It’s all in the past. We can move forward,” he responded fiercely as he gazed up into my eyes.
His words echoed back to those of another, who had once said the the same thing—holding me captive with the promise of a better tomorrow for years. I could feel the chill creep into my heart again as I quickly removed my hand and watched Bucky’s face melt into confusion. “It does matter and you know it,” I responded brutally.
“Why? Why can’t we talk about this and move on from it?” Bucky pleaded.
“Because I love you!” I yelled at him as I pushed off the couch once again. I froze at my sudden announcement. I hadn’t meant to say it – I had just been trying to reason my feelings out in my mind and it had slipped through. I looked at Bucky as he sat frozen on the couch. His mouth opened and closed several times; unable to formulate any type of response to me. I turned to leave – it was like I was living my own personal nightmare. I had prepared for this revelation as best as I could, but I had failed miserably in its delivery.
“Y/N, wait,” Bucky breathed as his hand wrapped around my arm – stopping me in my tracks. I turned to look at him again, but still saw the same troubled and terrified blue eyes that I had witnessed when I had accidentally confessed my feelings. “I…”
“Just tell me this Bucky – why did your best friend have to come find me in secret? Why wasn’t it you?” I asked bitterly as tears stung my eyes. Bucky looked down at the ground unable to answer me. “Jesus Christ – I can’t stay here and look at you like this,” I muttered as I yanked my arm from his grasp and turned to leave. As I stepped into the elevator I turned to make sure he wasn’t following me and saw him standing in the same spot I had left him. Just before the doors closed he turned to look at me with tears in his eyes.
I slumped against the wall of the elevator once the doors had closed. I felt like I had had the breath knocked out of me. Tears trailed down my cheeks as I tried desperately to regain my composure. Some of the others would be awake by now and I didn’t want to stir any suspicion. I couldn’t answer their questions – no matter how well intended they might be.
As the elevator doors opened to the common room I rushed through them – determined to dart to my room. In my panic I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings and ran into Steve.
“Woah, Y/N! Where’s the fire?” he chuckled. The humor in his eyes extinguished when he looked at my bloodshot eyes and tear stained cheeks. “What happened?”
“I…” I was finding it hard to speak, and keep my composure. “I walked in on Nat comforting Bucky after a nightmare and I…” Steve visibly tensed at this.
“Go on,” he said as he wrapped his arms around me and brought my head to his chest.
“I… he followed me, and I confronted him… and… I told him I loved him,” I whispered as I buried my head into Steve’s chest. I just wanted to disappear. “And he didn’t say anything, Steve... He just stood there.”
“Y/N,” Bucky’s voice came from behind me. I stiffened at the sound. I didn’t want to be anywhere near him. Steve hugged me tight as he sighed into my hair.
“Y/N, you should head back to your room. I’ll come check on you in a second,” Steve muttered. I looked up at him confused.
“Steve, I can…” but the look he gave me stopped me in my tracks. I swallowed hard before Steve’s arms dropped to his side and I half-turned defensively towards Bucky.
“Y/N, I…” but Bucky’s words were halted by Steve’s fist hitting him straight in the jaw. He blinked once before falling to his knees. He stared at me as I turned to leave.
“What the hell were you thinking?” Steve asked angrily as I retreated to my room – unwilling to participate in a super soldier brawl.
I slumped back to rest my head on my door. I was dizzy from the tale-spin of emotions that I had just endured. I heard Bucky trudge down the hallway with Steve close behind him.
“What are you doing?!” Steve demanded before a door slammed – securing both men safely in Bucky’s room, and making it less likely that they would wake up the entire tower.
“What am I doing?!” Bucky bellowed back. “I’m trying to win my girl back, and you keep getting in the way Rogers!”
“What the hell are you talking about Buck?” Steve asked – astonishment driving his voice to become even louder.
“Every time I turn around you are there with her. How am I supposed to even get a second to make things right when you are always there?!” Bucky yelled back at him before quieting himself – he must have regained enough sense to realize I could hear everything he was saying.
“You’re kidding, right? You don’t need my help fucking things up, Buck. You’re doing great on your own,” Steve answered incredulously. I could tell that Steve was trying to regain control of his anger but was struggling. “She literally ran away from you, and you refused to run after her. If it wasn’t for me she wouldn’t even be here, you fucking idiot!”
Silence lapsed between the two men as I held my breath – waiting for Bucky’s response. There was of course no way I could have known that Bucky would snap and run full force towards his best friend. Suddenly there was a loud crash and a cloud of debris as the two men came hurtling through the wall –Bucky with his hands still around Steve’s throat. I shrieked in response as I scrambled off of my bed and into the corner of the room as the two men crashed onto the floor. They rolled around – jabbing at one another and grunting. After the initial shock wore off I looked at the gaping hole that now adorned my bedroom wall, and felt anger bubble up from within me.
“What the fuck do you two think you’re doing?!” I screeched as I stomped over to the two of them and fruitlessly attempted to pry them apart. The men continued to fight as I yelled at them. Hot angry tears rolled from my eyes as they finally broke apart – realizing suddenly where they were and what they were doing.
Bucky scrambled to his feet quickly – his hair in disarray and he shirt partially torn. “Doll I am so..”
“What the fuck gives you the right to act like fucking two-year olds? Both of you are grown ass men! God! Just get out of my room!” I yelled as I stomped my foot in frustration. Without saying another word both men quickly exited. I groaned as I looked at the gaping hole in the wall near my bed. As Bucky entered his own room I realized there was no way I could stay. Not without seeing him, and hearing him every second – I angrily padded across the room, and grabbed my gym bag before making my way to the gym.
