"Oh,” Steve says. Then again, “oh,” a little quieter. His expression changes; from confusion to something pained almost. “Mr Munson, I don’t…” he takes a deep breath, his voice a little shaky as he continues. “I don’t think he…I don’t think he likes me like that.”

He doesn’t say “it’s not like that.” Neither does he say “I’m not like that.”

or: Dustin has the annoying habit of just busting into Eddie's trailer at ungodly hours. One morning Eddie's not alone though.

Between them, Alec finally gets a chance to realize that the world doesn't begin and end with being a Shadowhunter, and there's more out there for him, so long as he's got the courage to reach out and grab it.

Salvation lets their wings unfold by HopeSilverheart

Alec is frozen and, when she spots what has him looking so horrified, so is Clary.

Above the fireplace, hanging on the wall like some sort of divine offering, rest a pair of huge, black angel wings, so similar to Alec’s own. The mere sight makes him want to throw up and curl his wings around himself to make sure all his feathers are still in place. He can’t even begin to imagine life without the pair of extra limbs every Nephilim has to deal with. To be faced with the reminder that some people want nothing more than to tear those wings off his back is…

“What the fuck, Alec?” Clary whispers, her voice choked up and angry and alarmed. “Alec, what is this?”

Or: Alec, Clary and Magnus go on a mission to a warlock's home. What they find there leaves its mark on both shadowhunters.

Star Wars

As it turns out, no one ever taught Luke how to tie a little green baby to his back one-handed, but Luke thinks he's pretty gods-damned good at problem-solving under pressure, thank you, and the baby is at least semi-cooperative. When he's sure the kid is strapped in as tight as he can get, Luke pauses, and reaches back. His fingers graze the wide point of the baby's fuzzy ear. "Well, kid," says Luke, and his voice is a little rough, but not bad, all things considered. "Carrying you on my back while getting the absolute banthashit kicked out of me, at least this feels familiar."

The baby coos in his ear, and then kicks him hard in the kidney. Yoda used to do the exact same thing. Somehow, it's a lot more endearing now.

Or: Luke Skywalker solves a number of life-or-death problems, makes some new friends, falls abruptly in love, and gets shot into space, all in the same day.

Clone Wars

"New orders.” Cody hands the data pad over, and Waxer takes a minute to absorb the screen contents.

“Are we—” He stops, his voice hushed with something like awe. “Do we get to hit Dooku's... the kriff do the natties call it...” He snaps his fingers and points at Wooley for some reason. “Vacation home. Are we gonna burn down Dooku's vacation home?"

Or: Six weeks after Obi-Wan's funeral, the 212th reunites with their general.

All-time Sam/Gabriel recs

Five Times Sam Gave Gabriel the Kiss of Death (and One Time he Didn't) by ScrollingKingfisher

Summary: Everybody Sam kisses dies, right? That's his curse. So he figures that if it works on his lovers, it should damn well work on his enemies, too.

Only this is Sam Winchester's life, and nothing is ever easy like that.

Envy’s notes: Not placing these fics in a particular order but this one deserves to be first because of the amount of times I go back to it. Sam thinks the people he kisses are cursed and so at Mystery Spot decides to kiss Gabriel when he thinks he’s the enemy. He does it again in Changing Channels and eventually falls in love with Gabriel, now Sam is scared Gabriel’s gonna die because he kissed him.

Hoo-Doo Yoo-Doo by Violet Hyena

Summary: Sam's secret is that he's a drag queen. Gabriel meets his alter ego, Doe Adeer, and they hit it off very well. Sam is nervous about telling Gabriel who he is, but Gabriel might figure it out himself first.

Envy’s notes: Very lighthearted and sweet, NoHunting!AU, secret identities.

In Memory Of... by MonPetitTresor

Summary: "Over the years, Sam had become quite intimate with the concept of loss and he'd developed a few different coping mechanisms to help him deal with it. He learned to honor the memory of those he'd lost and he made sure to never forget them. Remembering them gave him the strength to keep going on. To keep fighting."

Only, for the first time, someone that he lost - someone other than his brother - comes back, and Sam's forced to confront just how much that being actually meant to him.

Envy’s notes: Sam gets a tattoo in honour of Gabriel after he dies, Gabriel luckily does not stay dead and eventually finds out about the tattoo when healing an injured Sam.

The French Mistake 2.0; or, Gabriel Being A Dick by LPCollins

Summary: "Hey baby, I got you flowers." "CAS?!" "Ahh yes, because that never gets old, Jared. Anyway, how was your day, baby?" "Me? ... Dude, I married fake Cas." "Actually it's Misha, you know, just in case you didn't read the marriage license when you signed."

Envy’s notes: Sam and Dean get thrown back into our world. Except that Misha and Jensen are married, so are Jared and Richard. Sam and Dean have to try getting back to their universe without disrupting this one.

Spoiler: Jared and Richard are having marriage struggles, Sam slept with Gabriel without knowing this

"But why would Rich want to? He knows they're fighting," Misha argued.

Sam's eyes grew big at the realization that Misha was right. "That doesn't make any sense."

My theory is that Richard is secretly Gabriel and has lived in our universe since Gabriel’s “death”. This fic is still ongoing and has 21k words right now, very excited for it to update (I have hope that it will).

Highway of Love (Or: How Sam Winchester Learned to Stop Worrying and Relax Already) by Jassy

Summary: AU. Sam noticed a few things weren't quite right after they killed the Trickster. After going back to check things out, his life will never be the same.

Envy’s notes: Sam realises the trickster did not die and returns to the lecture hall to look for him. Gabriel has the ability to stop time and takes Sam on a bunch of dates. A very romantic and sweet fic.

Spoiler: Gabriel saves Sam from the reaper when he gets stabbed by Jake, that’s also when Dean finds out about their relationship.

Last Words by Miniatures

Summary: He feels Dean’s eyes on him, but he can’t bring himself to meet his brother’s gaze. His mouth is cotton, his chest scraped raw. He draws back his sleeve and stares, breathing ragged, at the sharp black lettering along his forearm—the last words he’ll ever hear his soulmate say.

Envy’s notes: The last words your soulmate say to you are written upon your skin. Happy ending.

Summary: Sam gets cold in the bunker, wakes up, and goes to grab some coffee. On his way back, he ends up finding a really warm room. Is there anywhere better for him to sleep?

Envy’s notes: Sleepy and cold Sam goes to Gabriel’s room to steal all his warmth with a cuddle. Comfort!fic.

Envy’s notes: Cas and Dean are loud. Sam gets back at them with Gabriel’s help.

Envy’s notes: Fun and lighthearted. What better way to seduce Sam than to put him in a dating game with only you in it?

Envy’s notes: You know that scene where they have sex in ‘About Time’? Imagine that but it’s Sabriel and Sam remembers.

Summary: Gabriel wants to spice up the bedroom but Sam is against the idea, at least until he learns he's vanilla. Sam, as a last resort, summons Balthazar to help him because he's not very knowledgeable on lady garments. He then he proves to Gabriel he's not that vanilla.

Envy’s notes: Sam wants to prove he isn’t vanilla and tries crossdressing as a surprise for Gabriel.

Trustfall by DawnOfTheRoses

Summary: Next thing Sam knows, Gabriel’s fingers gently tug at Sam’s wrist and pull his arm over his head, closer to the cuff at the top left corner of the bed. Sam peeks at his arm curiously, and if Gabriel minds him looking, he doesn’t tell him off for it.

“I’m going to tie you up now, Sam. It’s important that you’re honest with me about your colours in the next few minutes, do you understand?” Sam nods, not trusting his voice, but Gabriel is not satisfied. “Use your words, Sam.”

“I understand, sir.”

OR Sam and Gabriel scene for the first time.

Envy’s notes: Very underrated, Gabriel is a soft dom in this and comforts Sam throughout their scene.

While others might not think this was the right thing to do, in Alec’s mind, it was the only thing. He wasn't going to let Magnus suffer. Not for this - not for him. He'd make it right, whatever it took.

Thoughts: i like this one.

i think this fits in with Alec’s character and works well with the other characters as well.  

i know its not practical but i also love when Alec gets immortality to be with Magnus but also doesn’t lose the parabatai rune...

i will say i wish the fic finished up with Clary being found and an all around happy ending but mostly the author just glosses over Clary as a whole so...

I genuinely have no idea where this ship came from, but it is pretty cute, and I was curious to read a couple fics of them. Besides, I’m currently on season 13 and we deserve more Gabriel content in this time of stress. All of these also have Destiel in them, but which one the fic is focused on varies. I hope you enjoy them!

Rewriting the Book by MonPetitTresor on AO3. (37,224 words).

He never could’ve predicted what Sam might find there – or what he might bring back home with him.

Notes: The trauma in this was written so well, and it is part of what made this amazing. It was really respectful, realistic, and clearly well researched. And, as a bonus, an excellent plot!

Side effects include pain, disorientation, and uncontrollable new appendages for the Winchesters. A disgruntled Castiel and a delighted Gabriel show up to help. Hunting (and life) gets interesting when wings are involved.

Notes: Okay this was literally adorable and you can not convince me otherwise. Every time I read a fic with everyone’s favourite archangel, I miss him just a bit more.

Black Swans by omphalos and Wolfling on AO3. (66,455 words).

Description: A post-apocalyptic road trip with a still recovering archangel wasn't how Sam had envisioned the aftermath of their big plan, but it sure beat a lot of the alternatives.

Notes: This was absolutely brilliant, so well written, and the plot was phenomenal! The misunderstanding was painful, and the original characters were great.

Description: It starts with headaches, and it ends in a clusterfuck. So, business as usual, Apocalypse-wise.

Notes: I know it says Good Omens as well, but it is just a brief mention of Aziraphale and Crowley, so you don’t need to know anything about it! And this fic was written beautifully. Is it bad that I miss the apocalypse days?

That One Time Sam Winchester Googled Something Weird and It Had Pretty Awesome Results by quitepossiblyjanuary on AO3. (2,587 words).

Description: In which Sam Googles something and his curiosity doesn't kill the cat. Or him. Or anyone. It's a pretty awesome feeling.

Notes: This was so adorable! Gabe was so sweet, and his mind reading skills made me laugh.

Bing Crosby’s Pennies From Heaven by twentysomething on AO3. (9,613 words).

Description: Sam always asks inappropriate, poorly-timed questions, so what comes out of his mouth doesn't exactly surprise himself. "Where were you?"

Notes: This was brilliant - the little gifts that Gabe left for Sam were adorable, and I burst out laughing at the image of trying to get Bobby’s wheelchair on top of a toilet.

‘Star Wars is Overrated’ by leftdragonpainter on AO3. (38,186 words).

Description: In which Dean has the hots for a librarian named Cas, Cas may or may not have the hots for a mechanic named Dean, and Gabriel joins Sam in the peanut gallery in the hopes that he might just get to do a horizontal tango of his own.

Notes: Damn, the misunderstandings in this were so unbelievably painful. Overall, though, it was very funny and quite cute. Also, I love the idea of Gabe owning a sweet store.

Bring it On Home by lilyleia78 on AO3. (34,482 words).

Description: When John sells his sons to Heaven in exchange for the Colt, Dean and Sam find themselves separated from each other and in the care of two very different angels. Dean and Cas work together to find out why Heaven wants Sam and how they can reunite the brothers - all the while growing closer every day. Meanwhile Sam should hate Gabriel and his endless string of conquests, but Gabriel's twisted sense of humor and attractive smile inspire something much more complicated.

Notes: First of all, I would like to say that John absolutely does not deserve any redemption or forgiveness in this fic, but okay. The idea - especially the Sabriel side - was a little creepy, but it was executed fairly well.

Notes: This was fairly cute, but a bit short for my tastes.

Notes: This was probably the first Sabriel fic I ever read, and honestly I just didn’t understand it. I mean, not complaining, because I’ve read Mystrade fics before and we all know they don’t even share a scene, but I was still confused. Then, I read a really nicely done thing on Instagram explaining it, and I kind of got it. So I read this, and I really enjoyed it, and now I ship Sabriel. 

So, they may be this fandom’s crack ship, but I hope you enjoyed this edition of Destiel + other ships. I’m thinking that I might do a Saileen one in the future, because she may have only been in one episode I have watched but oh boy she was an icon, and it’s good for my heart to ship things that actually happen (I think. No one tell me otherwise. I will cry).

Loki’s expression quickly melted into one of amusement. His lips curved upwards, and his eyes were bright with mirth. “All it takes to snag the infamous Ms. Stark is a simple sandwich?” Pursing his lips, Loki shook his head and made a low tutting sound. “I suppose we’re lucky there were no ingredients for dessert. The Norns know what might’ve happened to you then if your palate is so simple.”

There was so much fake pity in Loki’s voice. The kind that could be masked as something else, if one wasn’t able to see the way his lips twitched, or see the laughter in his gaze. Toni saw both of those, and it only made her grin all the more. “Or maybe my palate is refined enough to recognize greatness with even the simplest of things. I don’t propose to just anyone, you know.”

They were interrupted by JARVIS, who was a complete and total traitor, outing her entirely by saying “Of course you don’t, Ma’am. I’m sure it was someone else who proposed to Lt. Col. Rhodes when he made pancakes. Or to Dr. Banner when he made gumbo. Or to…”

“Enough outta you!” Toni cut in, affecting a look of utter betrayal on her face. Inside, she was laughing. Loki was chuckling, too. Turning back to him, Toni put one hand over her heart and widened her eyes in a pleading look. “Don’t listen to him. Those other cooks, they mean nothing to me. Your food is the only food I want.”

Loki gave another shake of his head. “The truth wills out. A truly fickle heart beats within your breast. How can I know you will not abandon me for better food one day?”

“Keep making things like this, and you’ll never have to fear,” Toni promised him.

The Cage was never meant to hold a human. It was meant for one archangel, not two, and definitely not a human soul. Little by little Sam's soul was being destroyed by the torture the Cage inflicted on it. Lucifer and Michael joined together and, with their combined grace, pieced together Sam Winchester's soul and sent him out of the Cage and into the past in the hopes that he can stop this whole thing before it even starts.

Only, when Sam lands, things don't quite go so well. He's not all that sure that this isn't another torture the Cage has provided for him. He's in the past, right after Dean got out of Hell, and he's nowhere near the same man he was before. He can barely remember how to function as a human. It's going to take his family and a little help from a surprised archangel for Sam to start to recover. He doesn't have much time, though, because the apocalypse is still coming and the angels are fighting to get Lucifer free. Can one broken man manage to change the past? Or are they doomed to repeat their same mistakes over and over again?

so i've read a lot of fanfiction bc frankly i don't do much with my time

i decided i should impart my knowledge aka share some of my top fics

today: malec. not the ship that got me into fanfics, but the one that kept me there (is that weird to say? i've read a lot of malec fics. i've gone through like a good 1000 pages of search results at this point.)

so anyways here's the list

1. a cold night for good deeds, by theprophetlemonade. this one is definitely my all-time favourite fic, hands down. settle in for 500k words of neonoir superhero slowburn, i promise it's worth it. such a good story (like legitimately well written), it's exciting, it's intriguing, and all round a good read. i just started my fourth(?) reread. i cannot praise this fic enough.

2. Families of Choice, by MonPetitTresor. another one of my all-time favourites, this time featuring fluffy family time. canon divergent pre-canon, loosely based on shameless (as the tags informed me, i myself have not watched it), and featuring two characters from another show (the magicians? i think) as warlocks, who you will instantly fall in love with. the main draw of this one: a very awesome, super cool, totally thoughtful and accurate, queerplatonic relationship- arguably it takes more precedence than the actually shippy ship.

3. the A Fine Institution series, by clottedcreamfudge. read the whole series, it is absolutely amazing. clottedcreamfudge is one of my favourite authors, the series also features a full compliment of podfics and a clean edition of the series. the basic premise sounds incredibly odd, but honestly it’s so good: the institute is sentient, and she likes alec. alec is like a son to her. and she is fed up with him and magnus not getting together, so she takes matters into her own... hands? metaphorically speaking. 

rating: varies story to story, everything from gen to explicit (available entirely gen), no archive warnings apply.

4. The Lonely Hearts Hotline, by Fatale (femme). this is a funny one. in short, alec is a phone sex operator to afford living with his unpaid law internship (boo, capitalism). someone, *wink wink nudge nudge*, calls the phone line and just wants to talk about music. bonding ensues.

5. Universally Acknowledged, by astudyinfic. a pride and prejudice fusion. (i have not read pride and prejudice). it’s historical-y, it has several balls, and almost nothing goes horribly terribly wrong. i’m pretty sure nothing on here will have an unhappy ending, so fear not. i am weak of spirit and dislike even bittersweet endings (not a fan of la la land, for comparison).

6. Names, by Oumy. in this fun twist on regular soulmates AUs, everyone has three soulmate names on their wrist- friendship, love, and an enemy. alec only has one. go figure. also he’s about to become emperor, which sounds like the perfect time to meet his one name. it’s pretty sweet, and has a good plot, and i’ve read it at least a couple of times. and it has assassins, and politics, if that’s your thing.

7. Flawed Design, by GoldenDaydreams. another soulmates fic, this time with extra soulmarks for notable events. it begins with adorable baby alec, and stays that great. soulmate words, misunderstandings, and general saltiness abound. there is also a shorter companion fic focusing on heline in the same series, which can be read after or alongside (or before but possibly with some spoilers).

rating: mature, graphic depictions of violence.

8. One step ahead, by apathyinreverie. a different first meeting, almost pre-canon, changes a surprising number of things. in all honesty i haven’t read this one in a while, but i know it’s good (i download Really Good fics and it’s in my downloads so). from what i remember, it’s a nice, catch-all fix-it of show canon.

9. and finally, Sixteenth Sunset, by Miss_Shiva_Adler + nhixxie. a short(er, still 29k) one to finish this post (there will probably be more, because there are several almost-entirely-smut fics i didn’t feel like fit in here). it’s astronauts and relationship development and mutual pining and cuteness. throw in some tasteful flashbacks and space things, and bam. sixteenth sunset.

as i said just there i’ll probably do more posts like this but a) they’re long and hyper-specific and probably won’t interest most people (hence the keep reading button), and b) it took forever to curate this and i need to stop and go to sleep now but i’m still going to stay up reading a cold night for good deeds because it’s that good and you should all read it it is Good Literature (and i’m and english nerd).

Only, for the first time, someone that he lost - someone other than his brother - comes back, and Sam's forced to confront just how much that being actually meant to him. @thequeervet, this stands as my favorite fic by you so far. I have read it more than any other fic and it always reduces me to a puddle of emotion, sobbing into my hands as I peek through my fingers so I can keep reading. I just want to paint everything.
