Interstellar, Ch 16: Everglow
"I think it’ll be safer to set up one of our holding cells for the test. We minimize the risk to Mundanes, and if anything goes wrong that has us opening up a demon portal or something it’ll be in a controlled area flanked by plenty of Shadowhunters to deal with it.” Izzy snickered. “Guess my brother’s on board after all!” She gave him a playful pat of his shoulder on her way towards the main elevators. “I’ll go get a cell set up for the test. Text you when I’m done?” “Likewise,” he replied with a nod, moving to one of the armament panels lining the Institute’s control room. As he retrieved a bow and fresh quiver of arrows, he grumbled, “Let’s go catch us a Ravener.” “‘Catch’?” Alec’s eyes widened. Alarmed, he swirled around to intersect what he knew would be an at-best awkward situation— —but the other Izzy already had her bracer leveled between his mother’s eyes, lips pursed so tightly they’d nearly turned white. Beside her, Magnus’ arm mirrored hers, though his sported a split hand to expose an embedded blaster humming with swelling energy. An intense, yellow glow consumed his eyes, though it remained clear they focused upon a small, blue dot the other Izzy’s bracer projected upon Maryse’s brow. “Isabelle?” Maryse was murmuring, hands raised and anxious gaze fixated upon the bizarre and unsettling version of Magnus staring her down. “What’s going on?!”

But talking about unhinged Alec, can you believe how we were robbed on the third season??? One of the writers shared this huge board with post-its about an episode that was later scrapped.
It was after Magnus lost his powers and borrowed Lorenzo's magic.
Alec would see Magnus failing to use some dishwasher, and there would be a cute scene between them. And in that moment Alec would be certain that man was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with (and not because of some health scare) and went to ask Maryse for the Lightwood ring. BUT on his way back to the Institute, he was going to be kidnapped by vampires. It's after the massacre on the Jade Wolf, so the vampires thought that having the HoTI of NY as a prisoner would be a good leverage lol and then a vampire would EAT THE LIGHTWOOD RING.
Meanwhile, Magnus would take Jace to talk to Jem 🥹 Jem and Magnus would talk about Will to Jace. And then there would be a little moment between Magnus and Jace where Jace noticed Magnus isn't well, and Magnus would ask to not tell anyone. That it's Lorenzo's magic and that he would ask Lorenzo to take it back (it would've been nice if it were by Magnus' choice)
Meanwhile, Simon would sneak into Dumort to save Alec. But Alec had already saved himself 😂 He is in a rage after the vampire who ate the ring and he wouldn't leave without his ring to propose to Magnus dammit.
There would also have a scene with Izzy and Aline talking, and Clary and Maia training together.
WE MISSED UNHINGED BAMF ALEC HUNTING A RING IN A VAMPIRE'S BELLY, AND JEM AND MAGNUS TALKING ABOUT WILL 😭😭😭😭
JUSTICE FOR UNHINGED ALEC!!
Also this is why we have fanfiction 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

Hi may i request a lightwood family fanfiction where they had a sister but she was kidnapped at birth and they meet her years later and if you do can you include maryse a lot thank you so much if you do this
Reunited
Hey, sorry it took so long. I had it almost done, then it all deleted and I didn't have it backed up anywhere. I hope this is okay and thanks so much for my first request :)
This focuses mostly on Maryse and her kidnapped daughter (Ophelia Lightwood)
Everyone knew about the three Lightwood kids. But what people didn't know about, was the 4th.
Born 2 years after Isabelle Lightwood, black-haired, blue-eyed, star shape birthmarked Ophelia Lightwood was not even half an hour old - and had just been named - when she was snatched out of a sleeping Maryse Lightwood's arms.
Soon after, Maryse woke up to empty arms. She assumed the doctors had taken her for something. When almost 3 hours had passed, she realized something was wrong.
Eventually the doctors discovered that Ophelia wasn't even in the hospital anymore.
That she had been kidnapped.
When Maryse heard the news, she was devastated. She would never see Ophelia say her first word or take her first steps. She would never attend her rune ceremony.
And so, that night Maryse cried and cried for all she would never get to see. She didn't even know if Ophelia was still alive.
Robert had been out on a mission and when he got back, he was furious. When he learnt what happened, he blamed Maryse for it. And eventually she began to blame herself.
Izzy was very young and so didn't know Ophelia existed. All she knew was that once every year she would walk past an empty room and hear her mother's sobs.
Alec however, knew what had happened, and so every year like clockwork, when Ophelia's birthday came around, Maryse would clutch on to him as if he was the only thing grounding her - and maybe he was.
She would sob and sob.
It broke Alec's heart knowing he could do nothing and it broke Izzy's heart not knowing why her mother sounded so pained and heartbroken.
So when a transfer from the London Institute arrived, saying her name was Ophelia, Maryse walked out of the room almost immediately.
Ophelia turned, confused, to Izzy. "Did I do something?" She asked. "I don't think so." Izzy replied, equally as confused.
Alec sighed, knowing it was only fair that Ophelia should know why his mother was acting like this. And so he explained everything.
Ophelia thought it was a coincidence at first, but more and more coincidences started appearing.
She had always wondered why her parents were brunette with brown eyes, and she was dark haired with blue eyes. In finding out that the kidnapped Ophelia and her not only shared a name but a birthday, she had to admit it was a bit suspicious. The icing on the cake was when she saw a baby photo of Ophelia, taken just before she was kidnapped.
Ophelia gasped.
That baby was identical to her baby photos.
And that's how she found herself outside of Maryse's office. Deep breaths Ophelia. You can do this.
She raised her hand to knock, but the door swung open andshe stood face-to-face with Maryse.
"Ophelia. Come in." Maryse said, forcing a smile as she stared at an exact replica of her kidnapped daughter.
They both took a seat. "Um... Alec told me about your daughter." She started off nervously. Her hands shook and beads of sweat dotted her forehead.
"And?" Maryse snapped, glaring at her. This was obviously a sore subject for Maryse, but her attitude was not helping the girl in front of her who was trembling like a leaf. Maryse's gaze softened a bit before she gestured for Ophelia to go on.
"Um-uh- well... I think I'm your daughter." She blurted out. Maryse opened her mouth to say something, but Ophelia beat her to it.
"Just think about it. I look like a Lightwood, our birthdays are the same day, and my baby pictures look exactly like Ophelia in the one you have."
Maryse was about to snap at her, when she mulled it over.
"I suppose it does make sense." She admitted. "But I have to check one thing."
She lifted Ophelia's arm, inspecting her shoulder. Maryse saw the star shaped birthmark and tears filled her eyes.
"It is you." She said softly. "Mom?" Ophelia replied, tears filling her eyes as well. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. It's all my fault." Maryse said over and over.
Ophelia pulled her into a bone-crushing hug.
"I don't blame you for me getting kidnapped. It's not your fault. Who said it's your fault?" Ophelia wiped her mom's eyes. "Robert blames me." Maryse admitted.
"Mom?" She choked out through the lump in her throat. "Yes?" Maryse wiped tears from her eyes.
Ophelia choked out a laugh. "Your husband's an idiot."
Maryse pulled her daughter back into a hug and they stood there in each others arms just crying.
Mother and daughter, daughter and mother. Reunited.

Hello! It's great to have you back. Hope changing cities went as smooth as possible 😚
Yet again, the way you describe emotions is so detailed and realistic, wow.
Magnus considered it a privilege to see Alec like that.
Simp.
“You’re allowed to move on if something ever happens to me.” Alec said after an hour of silence.
Magnus: are we really talking about it now? If the sex was bad, you could've just said it.
Whooooo, miscommunication, the cornerstone of fanfiction (affectionately). It annoys sometimes but also reminds that it is easy to judge people when you're not in the situation like them. It is easy to talk about the things that aren't triggering or don't make you feel insecure and unsafe. Communicating is an ordeal which is why I choose not to communicate.
What's with your characters and getting engaged to people they don't love. Only Imasu is selfish enough to do something for himself. I guess your fav fic trope is fake marriage/dating.
"You want the man back and you won't even go say hi to him."
I smell hypocrisy. But magnus is pretty so he gets away with it. Pretty privilege for magnus.
"He's my Alexander, Magnus."
Low blow, imim!Alec would appreciate if only Imasu didn't propose to magnus.
"Okay. I'm coming." Magnus disconnected the call.
Yeah, my sweety, go! You know, I really love all this romantic grand gestures at the expense of your future but they sometimes seem toxic to me. A very important part of your life is at stake. If a person loves you, they would understand your choice. Especially Alec, judging by what he said earlier.
Lightwoods are little and big (Maryse) shits and the greatest malec shippers. Good for them. Oooh, and the awkwardness i anticipate...
Thank you for the chapter! And I hope it is really the last time you update the chapter count. Have a good day, night, or whatever time you are reading this :)
Hi again.
“If the sex was bad, you could’ve just said it” SCREAMING AT THIS BRO.
I completely agree about the big gestures thing. We’ve seen time and again how Magnus keeps on making these big sacrifices for Alec in timeline I. This is why Magnus decided to go for that meeting in timeline II. This is growth for him. He’s learning that he doesn’t always have to be there. He can put himself first too—it doesn’t mean he loves Alec any less. And even Jace and Izzy understood. If Alec was awake, he would have too. He would have been proud of Magnus for doing that in fact.
Also yes, get ready for some awkward times bb. Thank you. I always love hearing your thoughts. 🌻💚
P.S. I have to catch up on the last two chapters of the vampire au. I’ll find you soon with my reactions.

Shadowhunters
Here are some of my favourite Shadowhunters fanfiction.
Summary:
"When Jocelyn agreed to take Alec off Maryse’s hand when she was escaping Valentine she never truly realise the implication of raising two shadowhunter children but with one of them having warlock abilities on top of all that it was a struggle to keep the whole shadowworld a secret from both of them. Alec’s magic was both extraordinary and flipping annoying because she can’t remember how many pieces of furniture she had to replace because of some accidental magical burst when Alec was a toddler and don’t get Jocelyn started on trying to train Alec to control his magic. To this day she was ever so grateful for Dot for being by her side throughout the whole of Alec and Clary’s childhood.
AU: Maryse gives Alec to Jocelyn when she escapes Valentine and Alec grows up living an mundane life until Clary's eighteenth birthday when they discover the shadowworld together."
Summary:
"He grunted in pain and looked down at his injury. Seeing the sliced flesh he huffed angrily. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a pen-like object, without releasing her wrist he brought it up to one of his many complicated tattoos. It flared to life, his wounded skin knitting back together easily.
She was still crouched there with one wrist limp in his hand, her mouth open wide.
“So? How can you see me?”
She gathered herself and snapped, “More importantly, what the fuck?”
He rolled his eyes at her, “That’s a pretty open question, ‘what the fuck’ to what?”

What-If Clary and Alec had met before the start of the series."
Summary:
"Magnus is turned into a dragon and appears to be stuck that way. (This is not how he pictured his Tuesday going.)
Alec is called to handle a disturbance that involves a dragon and meets a creature that is scared and in need of protection.
Within minutes of meeting each other, they are inseparable, with Alec taking responsibility for the small dragon, and Magnus taking advantage of the protection offered by the shadowhunter.
Neither of them is expecting a convenient arrangement for them both to evolve into something much, much more."
Summary:
"When Magnus found out a shadowhunter, of all things, was taking care of a warlock child, well, to say he was shocked would be an extreme understatement.
Centuries of experience with shadowhunters had taught him that they were not to be trusted. They were cruel, and had killed many of his kind simply for existing. The other thing that scared Magnus was that the shadowhunter was a Lightwood, and of all the shadowhunter famillies he'd met, the Lightwoods were by far one of the worse.
-
Or: Author wanted a cute single dad Alec fic where he adopts Madzie and Magnus sees them together and falls in love with Alec because he's a single shadowhunter parent to a warlock child."
Summary:
"What if Alec and Magnus had already met during that Pandemonium scene in the very first episode?
-
Or, how things might have gone if Magnus and Alec had just had a few extra days to get to know each other, before Valentine’s schemes, Clary’s various crusades, Lightwood family history revelations and Clave-Downworld politics made everything more difficult for them than it really needed to be.
It truly might have made all the difference in the world."
Summary:
"Alec Lightwood, grad student at NYU, gets hired by Magnus Bane, CEO of Edom Enterprises, as the new caretaker of the latter's three kids, Max Rafael and Madzie.
Alec has a temper.
Magnus is rude.
Both have a past that they'd like to forget
Magnus' past includes an arranged marriage, heartbreak, cheating and Camille Belcourt while Alec's past... oh well, only Alec knows about his past.
They resent each other, until one day...they don't."

Five Times Maryse Lightwood Realized She Was Wrong (And the One Time She Admitted It)
Read on AO3
3- In the Doorway
Maryse Lightwood and 'The Time She Went to Tell Alec to Get Some Sleep But Found Magnus There Already Doing It For Her'
or 'The 100000000000000000000000000th time that Malec was cute'
______
Alec had thrown himself into everything he did with as much energy and enthusiasm as he possibly could. It was what he had been trained to do, since he was a child. And becoming Head of the Institute was no different.
He had taken over at the worst possible time, Maryse Lightwood knew this, and she hated Imogen Herondale for it. For making every effort she could to throw her son under the bus, to let him taste his future, before she ripped it from his hands.
But Alec was not one to let himself fail, and she was proud, knowing that he was doing everything in his power to prevent Imogen from having any excuse to replace him. Alec was smart; Alec knew that he above all others had to be the perfect leader.
It was why Maryse Lightwood was on her way to Alec’s office at this very moment. Because Valentine had been recently imprisoned in the Institute’s basement. And she knew there was much still that Alec had to do to make sure that he stayed there. To make sure he could settle the stirrings of a Downworlder uprising that Imogen and the Clave had created, but had somehow become Alec’s responsibility to stop. Maryse Lightwood knew her son well, and she knew that it had probably been two days since he had slept.
She was going to make sure he learned how to take a break before he worked himself to an early grave.
Decades of Shadowhunting had taught Maryse how to stay silent in stilettos, and the training kicked in the minute she heard voices coming from Alec’s office.
“Darling, I’m serious,”
“So am I. I’m fine, I don’t need to sleep.”
What was Magnus Bane doing at the Institute at two o’clock in the morning? Maryse asked herself as she peeked around the corner of the doorframe.
Alec was sitting at his desk, his chair spun around to face Magnus, hand still hovering over the tablet in which he stored his documents. His elbow resting on the stack of files he still had to finish signing.
“You haven’t slept in two days, and stamina runes can only keep you going for so long.”
“I’m not tired.”
“Because you’re running on pure adrenaline.”
“I am not.”
“Alexander Gideon Lightwood, do not give me that bullshit,” Magnus chastised, pointing a single ringed finger at Alec, who frowned in shock. Maryse bit back a laugh, covering her mouth with her hand at the thought that Magnus Bane was feeding Alec the same spiel she would have given him. That there could be so much love and care in his voice, and so little room for argument. And maybe it was the fact that she had seen Magnus with Alec a few times before, that she no longer found herself surprised that Magnus could find exactly the right tone to make sure Alec was paying attention.
Magnus dropped his hand, he softened his posture, he ran a hand through Alec’s hair. “I know that you are under a lot of pressure to do everything perfectly. I know how scared you are of losing the only thing you’ve dreamed about your entire life because you’re dating me.”
“This isn’t your fault, Magnus,” Alec replied automatically, as if it were something he had learned how to say on autopilot.
“Well, regardless, I know how important this is to you, being Head of the Institute, and you know as well as I do that you are a phenomenal leader. You deserve this, Alec, you deserve every minute of leadership. You will do great things for the Shadow World. You’re doing everything you can to make a positive change, and I am so unbelievably proud of everything you’ve done to try to bridge the divide between Shadowhunters and Downworlders. But, angel,” Magnus tucked a strand of hair behind Alec’s ear, and kept his hand resting on Alec’s cheek. Alec pressed a brief kiss to Magnus’ palm. “Good leaders make smart decisions, and you can’t make smart decisions if you are exhausted.”
Alec sunk back in his chair, and Maryse could tell this was hitting too close for comfort with Alec.
“I know you know this,” Magnus pressed. “You aren’t going to be very helpful to anyone if you are too tired to focus, or if you drop in the middle of combat because you don’t have the energy to stand up. Alexander,” Magnus paused for a second, taking the opportunity to sit in Alec’s lap. Alec’s arms automatically going from where they sat on his paperwork to wrap themselves around Magnus’ body. And Maryse thought for a moment that for some reason it looked like the most natural thing in the world. Alec and Magnus, together. How had she not believed it before?
“The first step to being a good leader, is taking good care of yourself,” Magnus continued. “Valentine is in a cell downstairs, I am back in my own body.” Alec pressed their foreheads together at that. “The world is not going to end just because you let yourself take a break for a few hours and let your body rest,” Magnus said as he kissed Alec quickly before jumping off his lap and holding out a hand in offering. “Besides you don’t even have to leave the office. You can just sleep on the couch. God knows it’s more comfortable than your actual bed, and anyone who sees you will think you are the hardest worker they’ve ever come across…which is true anyway.”
“I don’t have a pillow,” Alec crossed his arms over his chest, a challenging smirk on his face.
“Alexander, do you so easily forget that you have a magical boyfriend who can summon you a pillow? Or, an incredibly handsome boyfriend with a lap that is perfect for laying your head in?”
“Well if I had known that offer was on the table I would have gone to bed much earlier,” Alec smiled, grabbing Magnus’ hand and allowing himself to be pulled out of his chair.
Magnus embraced Alec for a moment, kissing his forehead. “Let’s give that beautiful brain of yours a chance to rest.” They walked hand in hand to the black leather couch, Magnus taking time to sit before guiding Alec down after him. Alec curled on his side almost immediately upon laying down. A yawn contorting his face. Magnus smiled to himself, a small smile, a private one, one of uncontainable bliss. Something meant for no one but himself. A smile that Alec was completely oblivious to. Magnus twisted around to grab the blanket that was hanging off the edge of the couch. He splayed it carefully over Alec’s body. One hand entangling itself in the dark black strands of Alec’s hair, playing with it absentmindedly.
Alec hummed happily, reaching out with one hand to take Magnus’ free one. Magnus took it readily, drawing circles on Alec’s skin.
“I love you,” Alec murmured, sighing contentedly, as he snuggled deeper into Magnus’ lap, as if he had found safety in it.
“I love you, too,” Magnus replied.
And it was something Maryse believed whole-heartedly. She could see it now, she could see how good they were for each other, could see the way Alec’s confidence had grown under Magnus’ careful care. How Magnus had seemed happier too, in the brief moments she had seen him. How there was a new light in his eyes, how he was much more tolerable when it came to matters of business. How much he cared about Alec, about a Shadowhunter, a Lightwood no less. And what had she been doing trying to convince herself of anything else? Magnus would not break Alec’s heart. Magnus and Alec loved each other. And maybe, maybe Alec had started to show her that it was okay to find love in the arms of a Downworlder. That maybe it wasn’t so wrong, that maybe it was time to get over her bias, and her prejudice. To admit when she wrong.
She looked back at them once more, at the sound of Alec’s gentle snores, and nearly jumped in shock when her eyes met Magnus’ brown ones. He sent her a small smile; how long had he known she was here? How long did he know she had been spying on them? She could feel the slow pooling of heat in her cheeks, blush a too obvious sign of her embarrassment at being caught. She forced a small nod, the best approval she could think of in the moment, before turning on her heel and fleeing into the comfortable darkness of her own room.

IDRISNNET’S SECRET SANTA EVENT - merry christmas to harlow! <3 @redlipclassc
“No, Alec, you’re holding it wrong again,” said Robert, adjusting tiny Alec’s grip on the sword. “You can’t fight like this. When will you finally learn how to be a soldier?”
Alec swallowed. Why couldn’t he remember? It was his second lesson already. Focus, he ordered himself.
He slashed the sword from left to right horizontally and widely, curved its hilt towards himself, pulling it until it reaches behind his ribs and struck forward. Well, that was marginally better, he thought.
Robert pursed his lips, but before he could get a word out, a barreled into him.
“Isabelle! It’s dangerous,” Robert chided. “Where is Maryse? Why isn’t she taking care of you?”
"Aye want Aaaaaaa neck,” she screamed. Robert frowned, and left the weapons room, presumably to complain to Maryse.
Alec admired his baby sister a lot. A LOT. She always managed to get what she wanted by her sheer force of will.
He wondered if she knew Robert hated her screams - was it a tactic?
“I was having a lesson,” Alec said. He didn’t mean to blame her. He was just stating a fact. Did he sound like Robert?
She crossed her arms. “Do oo want eem ter come back? Do oo want me ter go?” she asked.
Should he tell her the truth as in what he actually wanted? Or the truth in what he was supposedly to do?
“Of course I don’t want you to go,” he said carefully.
“Oo are not good weeth sorts,” she said.
He grimaced. Now, if anyone would ask him how it felt like to be roasted by a four-year-old, he would know. Not that anyone would ask. Not that he had any friends.
“I want a shield,” he told her. “You must think it’s not cool.”
Izzy made a face. “Hoo carr ‘bout nawt cool?”
Alec suppressed a laugh. How could Izzy be so smart when she couldn’t even speak clearly?
“Oo will be cool. ‘cause shield shields or ugly clothes,” she continued.
He hugged her close. “What if they are disappointed in me? What if they don’t want me?”
A small hand tugged his shirt. “Aye want too. Four ever.”
It was enough. What ever he would not have, he would have his sister by him.
```
When Robert and Maryse arrived at the weapons room, both looked like they had gone through a shouting match. Robert was red in the face, and Maryse’s veins were pulsing on her neck.
Izzy declared to them that Alec look velly velly bad with swords, and demanded Maryse to help him choose a new weapon.
“He doesn’t have to learn how to fight now. He’s only six,” she hissed under her breath to Robert.
“Of course he has to. The earlier he starts training the better, or else he will lag behind,” he retorted.
Maryse looked like she was about to explode, and Alec did not know what to do. What should a child do when his parents argue? Should he mediate? What should he say? What if his family fell apart precisely because he didn’t say something here and now?
“Mom, I want to,” he said quietly. “Help me?”
She took a deep breath and opened the weapons vault. She showed him a bow and some arrows. She told her he would not have the strength to pull the bow now, but if he would work on building some arm muscles, she would teach him how to use it. Later.
He looked over to Izzy, to see if she was thoroughly bored, but she only looked smug and proud. Robert, obviously, had left the room, muttering something like “what an unconventional choice.”
He looked back at Maryse, who told him how archery, unlike swordfights, would be less suitable for short-distance combat. In other words, it would be ineffective for the fighter who went in front, but very useful for the one who covered everyone’s back. She told him about runes that could enhance his performance, like accuracy runes, but he also had to hone his archery skills. And of course he would go through arrows as fast as he drank a glass of water, but they could be retrieved after the battle.
He felt like she knew part of him, and that made him feel a little bit better.
To Break Any Curse
Fandom: Shadowhunters
Relationship: Magnus Bane / Alec Lightwood
Words: 2,148
Sneak Peek:
Alec lunged to catch him as Magnus’s eyes rolled back and fluttered shut, as his legs gave out from under him. A hand came to cradle the back of his head, easing the warlock down, holding him gently in his arms. He was so still. To see Magnus—someone who never stopped moving—so still, was a terrifying thing to witness.
“Magnus,” he tried, his voice tremoring in panic, a hand coming to touch his husband’s cheek. “Magnus!” His gaze came to Asmodeus, seeing the greater demon had collapsed, gasping, to the floor. “What did you do to him?”
A shockingly unmalicious smile crossed Asmodeus’s expression, and he lifted his gaze to Alec. “A curse,” he uttered, “and a test… This will allow you to prove just how much you love him.”
sacrifice (i would have loved you all my life)
The fic based on a prompt from @thelightofthebane is finally here! It will be posted in four chapters, this being the first <3 I hope you enjoy!!
Read on AO3
Alec took a deep breath and willed his hands to stop shaking. He didn’t have much time.
The half-written letter on his desk glared at him, and Alec sighed. No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t find the words. How was he supposed to tell his family that he would never see them again? It was feeling more and more like an impossibility with each minute that ticked by.
“Right,” Alec muttered to himself. “I can do this.” He picked up the pen once more.
Jace,
By the time you find this, I’ll be gone. You’re going to lose your parabatai rune. It’s going to feel like I’m dying, but I’m not. I can’t explain everything, but I’m doing this for Magnus. You didn’t see him at the loft, after I tried to propose. He was devastated. Heartbroken. He can’t go on like this, without his magic. He needs it back. This is the only way. I’m sorry. I love you and I wish I didn’t have to do this.
Please don’t look for me. I know I’m making the right choice. It’s hard, but it’s for the best. Watch out for the others. Don’t do what you always do and get yourself killed. Clary and the others are there, if you’d just let them be. Please let them, Jace, for me.
I’ll miss you. You’ll be okay, Jace. Everyone will be.
Remember that our rune is just a symbol of what we have. When it breaks, we won’t break. We’ll always be parabatai, even without the rune.
Alec
Alec exhaled shakily and folded the letter into an envelope, scrawling Jace’s name on top of it. There. That would have to do. There was so much more that he wanted to say to his parabatai, but he didn’t have the time. He still had to write letters for Izzy, his mom, and Magnus.
Alec took a deep breath and reached for another sheet of paper. He didn’t regret his choice, but he was starting to realise just how much he had to give up. Magnus, he reminded himself. This is for Magnus.
With that, Alec steeled himself and started to write once more.
Izzy,
By the time you find this, I’ll be gone. I’m not dead. I’m not being coerced into writing this. This is my choice. Please don’t look for me. Tell Jace not to look for me, too. Things are going to be bad for a while, but this is the way it has to be. I’m sorry.
I can’t explain everything right now; I’m running out of time. But just know that I’m doing this for Magnus, because I love him and because he deserves so much more than I could ever give him. Please take care of him for me, Iz. I know this won’t be easy, but it’s for the best.
I’ll miss you, Izzy. It’ll be alright, I promise. You’ll be okay without me. I love you, little sis.
Alec
It took all of his willpower to keep from breaking down. This was Izzy, this was his little sister, this was the person that he had watched over and taken care of since he was five. Leaving her felt a little like leaving a piece of himself behind, and Alec had to wonder how many pieces he would have left at the end of all this.
His shoulder burned for a split second, and Alec looked back just in time to see another rune disappear from his skin. He sucked in a deep breath, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. He had to keep going. The curse was working faster than he was.
Alec wrote Izzy’s name on her envelope and set it to the side with Jace’s, reaching for another sheet of paper. He had to hurry.
Mom,
By the time you find this, I’ll be gone. I can’t explain everything, but please know that I am alive and safe. I can’t promise you’ll see me again, but I can promise that this is for the best and this is my decision and mine alone.
I know you won’t understand, even if you figure out the truth, but all I can say is that I love Magnus and there is nothing that I wouldn’t do for him. One day - maybe with Luke (and yes, I know) - I hope that you’ll understand.
I love you, Mom. I wish we had more time together, to fix things. As it is, I’m counting on you to do right by Jace and Izzy. I know you haven’t always seen eye to eye with them, but they’ll need you. Take care of them for me.
I’m sorry.
Alec
Alec blew out a harsh breath and folded his mom’s letter, giving it the same treatment that he’d given the others. The letters were forming a pile now, a little stack of white that made dread settle in Alec’s stomach. They were the last of him that his family would have, and that thought made him want to collapse to the floor and weep, mourn everything that he was going to lose and everything that he would miss and all of the people that he was letting down. But he knew he couldn’t. His runes were steadily disappearing and he still had work to do.
Feeling sick, Alec grabbed one final sheet of paper and prepared himself for the last letter he had to write. Magnus’s letter.
Dear Magnus,
By the time you read this, I’ll be gone. Please don’t come looking for me. You can’t interfere. Please leave it alone. I promise that I will be okay.
I can’t possibly begin to explain this to you, but I know that I have a responsibility to try. Magnus, when I saw you break down like that in the loft, it made me realise something. It made me realise how badly you were hurting and how much you were suffering without your magic. I’m so sorry that I didn’t realise before. I was so caught up in saving Jace and stopping Lilith that I never stopped to think about how much you might be hurting. I’m sorry.
I had to do something after that, and this is me doing something. I won’t explain it all to you, because I know you’ll try to come after me and undo what I did, and I can’t let you do that. I won’t let you go back to a life without your magic. It was killing you.
Magnus, you deserve so much - you deserve someone that will always make you a priority and never put you in second place. You deserve the world. You don’t deserve me. I will never be good enough for you, Magnus.
I know it’ll be hard, but please try to move on. Find love again. Get married. Have kids. Love your life like you used to before everything got so complicated. You deserve that. You deserve everything.
I love you more than words can say, and I will miss you so much. I’m sorry, Magnus. Please, please choose again. Choose somebody better. I’m not your choice. I’m sorry.
I love you.
Alec
Alec folded the letter with shaking fingers, ignoring the teardrops that splashed onto the paper. He stuffed it into an envelope and just managed to scrawl Magnus’s name on top of it and toss it onto the pile with the rest of them before he broke down in tears.
Memories rushed into Alec’s mind, unbidden - his first kiss with Magnus, at his wedding, and the way Magnus had kissed him back like he was air and Magnus couldn’t fucking breathe. His first mission with Jace, and the way that they moved together so fluently that they just knew, right from the very beginning, that they were destined to be parabatai. When Izzy was born, and Alec had slept beside her crib for three nights afterwards, whispering promises into the air about always protecting her and keeping her safe.
Alec choked on a sob and desperately tried to pull himself together. He felt the burn of his deflect rune disappearing, and that made him dig his fingernails into his palms, hard. The extra bite of pain grounded him, centered him in a way that nothing else could at the moment. That was the rune that Magnus had always loved, always said was “placed perfectly, Alexander” and always damn near worshiped in bed. Losing it was like losing a tie to Magnus, and Alec had to grip the edge of his desk so tightly that he feared his fingers might break in order to keep himself under control.
Right. He had to snap out of it. There was still more to do.
Alec glamoured himself invisible and slipped out of his office, letters in hand. He stopped by the training room to grab his bow and quiver before he made his way to Jace, Izzy, and Maryse’s rooms to slip their letters under their doors. By the time they woke up in the morning, Alec knew, he would have no idea who they were. That thought alone made him want to break down again, but he shoved his emotions aside with practiced ease and continued on.
The cool night air was a welcome change from the Institute’s stifling atmosphere, and Alec took a deep breath, trying to appreciate the sights and sounds of New York before his last rune disappeared.
By the time he made it to Magnus’s, Alec only had four runes left - his glamour, his iratze, advanced hearing, and his parabatai rune. He shivered, trying not to think about it. His parabatai rune, he knew, would be the last to go, and all Alec could do was hope that the other runes would take a few hours to disappear so that the breaking of his bond with Jace wouldn’t wake the other boy up. He at least wanted Jace to be awake, maybe have Clary with him, something. The hardest part of all of this was leaving the people he cared about behind.
“See that Mr. Bane gets this tomorrow morning,” Alec instructed the boy who worked at the front desk of Magnus’s apartment building, slipping him a 20 for good measure. With that, he walked out of Magnus’s building for possibly the last time, and headed for the park.
Alec wasn’t sure what made him choose the park, of all places, to lose the last of his runes, but the feeling of the gardens settled something in him when he sat down on the park bench. This would be the last time he sat in this park as a Shadowhunter, the last time he would look down and see the physical representation of his bond with Jace marking his skin. Finally, for the first time all night, Alec put his head in his hands and allowed himself to cry.
Remember when I said writing a more in-depth version of the two hour finale for Shadowhunters would involve the sad “if we can’t save him, I’m staying there” conversations between Alec and his family? Well, I’ve posted that chapter now.
I recently wrote a new fic! It’s some of the missing scenes after Clary is presumed dead on the Shadowhunters tv show.
The Children of Flames, Chapter 24: Close My Eyes Forever
“I don’t… know what else to do. I don’t want an all-out war with your family - I don’t want any of you, or anyone else, to get hurt. But Caine is back, and he’s taken Cyd, and I’ve no doubt they’ll try to reach Ignis. Cyd’s faith in us may hold, but if we don’t act fast and get to them I don’t know how severely Caine and Ignis may retaliate, and I don’t know if Cyd would be able - or willing - to keep them at bay.”
Alec met Malina’s eyes. She’d stilled, a rapt intensity shining in the dungeon’s harsh lighting. He could tell a thousand thoughts raced across her mind, and he could only hope they landed in his favor. “Please, Malina,” he implored her. “We have to find them, and we need you and Mitomi to do it. Help us find her, help us bring her here - where I can protect her.” He pulled out Liandra’s stele, and hoped his eyes adequately conveyed the anguish he felt at the options laid before him. “Please don’t make me use your rune.”
Story:
Maryse pushed into the large abandoned office, struggling with the large cooked ham she was carrying. She peered inside and stood in awe of Kadir’s work while she was cooking. They had both spent all Christmas morning cooking and sprucing up the old room up for a family meal. Kadir had chosen the room with an out of use fireplace, the reliable Shadowhunter even got working earlier on in the day.
“This looks amazing,” Maryse complimented while making her way to the decorated large meeting table; they had draped a red table cloth with a festive white snowflake pattern and placed some candles down the middle. “Did you get firewood?”
“Yes,” Kadir pointed to a neat pile by the lit fireplace. “I think I am about done as well with the tree. What do you think?”
Maryse set the food down on the table and turned to face Kadir and the tree. She looked at all the ornaments and garland wrapping the pine and smiled. Maryse let her eyes drift up to the shining soft yellow star on top and tried to recall the last time it was peaceful enough to entertain the idea of a shared holiday meal. She had mentioned her thoughts to Kadir in passing after a hunt and was surprised with Kadir’s insistence that maybe it would be a good time for them to ease her children into the idea of their relationship.
Their relationship was still new to them. Maryse wasn’t searching for anyone; they were at a time of constant skirmishes and near death. She didn’t have the time to think of things like that; her children needed her. Still, before she knew it, Kadir had found a place next to her. He was reliable and balanced, a compliment to her sometimes rash nature.
Maryse hadn’t realized when she started to rely on him for things outside of Shadowhunter’s duties. The dance between them was a slow one; they recently had put a label on it themselves. Maryse and Kadir had Blueberry to thank for that. Babysitting the energetic warlock had pulled them closer rather than separate them as Maryse had feared.
She felt Kadir walk up behind her and wrap his arm around her waist. Maryse turned and rested her head against his shoulder. They were both out of their standard Shadowhunter gear and in a pair of odd sweaters Clary had assured her were part of the mundanes’ Christmas traditions to wear.
“They’ll be here soon. I should go get their presents,” Maryse sighed, taking in the decorations Kadir had carefully strewn around the room to make it look festive and welcoming.
“I’ll go get them. It’s better if you are here to greet them, in case they are early,” Kadir volunteered.
“My children early?” Maryse laughed and smiled. “Alright, you can go get them. I’ll finish setting up the food.”
Kadir smiled and pulled away, placing a chaste kiss on Maryse’s cheek before he went off to retrieve the gifts.
She looked around the room and decided she should put up the fireplace protector in place. Maryse didn’t want Max getting any ideas while the get together was going on. She hopped the enchanted train set she had purchased from the Shadow Market would keep the little warlock entertained. Rafe was still a wild card on what to get; she had to question her son-in-law through some drinks on what her newest grandson liked. Magnus had mentioned Rafael’s love for Spanish lullabies and light up sneakers. Maryse resolved to find something in the Shadow Market as well. She was pleased when she passed a Seelie’s booth with music boxes; of course, she got it checked over by Magnus and Catarina, but purchased a light metal box that played the tune of ‘Arrorro Mi Niño.
A fire message shot through the air, snapping Maryse from her thoughts as her hand reached for the small paper.
‘Is portal good, or would you rather we made a Lightwood-Bane entrance? -Magnus Lightwood-Bane’
Maryse sighed with a smile and sent back that a portal would be fine. Her son-in-law had taken pride in using his full last name whenever he could. Maryse could recall how boldly Magnus had written his full name on the Shadowhunter documents.
“Hey, mom, look who we found,” Jace called out as Clary walked in, carrying two presents. Jace behind her had more than ten, and close behind him was Kadir balancing even more gifts. “Wow, you went all out!”
Maryse walked over and pulled Clary into a hug, and greeted them. “Of course, I did. Honestly, Jace put the presents down; you are going to fall or something. How are you, Clary?”
“No fair. How come Clary gets a nice greeting,” Jace pouted and went with Kadir to start putting the presents under the tree. “Is Alec here yet? He’s the one that texted me not to be late earlier.”
“You almost were if he hadn’t texted me too,” Clary reminded him as she smiled at Maryse. “This looks lovely, Maryse. I can’t believe you did this all by yourself.”
“Thank you, but I didn’t. Kadir helped me out,” Maryse confessed with a small smile. “He set up the room whi-”
A portal opening behind her cut off Maryse’s words, followed by a curse from Jace.
“Got it,” Kadir called out before Maryse and Clary could fully see what had happened.
“Sorry!” Max’s voice called out.
Maryse watched as Max was now on his uncle Jace and Kadir was balancing even more gifts than before.
“Maxie! Dad said we couldn’t just run through portals,” Rafe scolded his brother as he passed through the portal.
“But Rafe, I saw Uncle Jace! It was safe!” Max fought back with a pout.
“Dad still says no, Maxie.”
“Boys,” Magnus’ voice follows as the warlock passes through accompanied by Alec, who is shaking his head at his children. “We are here to have a meal with family, no fighting on holidays, remember?”
“Sorry, Ayah.” both boys responded.
“All good boys, just remember good children get hot chocolate and movies before bed,” Magnus added, reminding them of their promised reward if they behave.  “Maryse! What lovely decorations, look darling a mistletoe.”
Maryse looked over to Kadir, and both raised a brow; neither remember putting up mistletoe in the decorations.
“Are we late?” Simon called out from the door holding Isabelle’s hand. “Sorry, we had patrol before this, so we had to clean up. I don’t think ichor would be a nice addition to the menu.”
“Si,” Izzy sighed and smiled as she walked forward to hug her mom. “It smells so good in here. I can’t wait.”
“Kadir, are you joining us?” Alec asked as everyone had settled inside.
Maryse walked over to Kadir and stood by him. She looked up at him as her children’s and their partners’ eyes watched them both.
“We actually have an announcement to make,” Maryse answered for them both. “Kadir and I have been seeing each other for some time now.”
“Was it before you babysat Max?” Jace asked first.
“No, we were still trying to figure things out at that point,” Maryse answered as she felt Kadir squeezed her hand in his. The support allowed her to keep going. “It is all still very new.”
“That means,” Simon started and stopped as he looked to be in deep thought. “Clary wins!”
“Wins?” Maryse and Kadir both asked, confused.
“Shame. I was planning to get some free babysitting days from winning,” Magnus chimed in with a sigh. “I was betting it takes you both till New Year’s.”
“Excuse me?” Maryse asked again. She was aware that her children were prone to different types of bets, but she wasn’t aware that some would involve her. “Did you all bet on this?”
Isabelle and Jace looked immediately to Alec, knowing that tone of voice from their mom.
“We want you to be happy, mom,” Alec started as he discreetly glared at his younger siblings. “We knew Kadir was someone worth your time after we picked up Max. I know how many  accidents  can happen when babysitting Max. Still, he shook it off.”
“So you did bet on this,” Maryse concluded as she sighed. “Please don’t bet on my life events.”
“I don’t think it’s so bad,” Kadir said, wrapping an arm around Maryse pulling her closer.
Maryse looked up slightly and blushed at his words. She heard the not so quiet giggles and whispers from around her and cleared her throat.
“Alright enough about my love life! Let’s get ready to eat before the food gets cold.”
“It’ll be great to have you, Kadir,” Isabelle smiled before hooking her arm around Simon. “My brothers have told me some about you, but it will be nice for us four to have a conversation later. Come on, Si, I think mom made baked macaroni. You have to try it.”
Maryse shook her head, slightly mortified at the idea that her children might attempt to give Kadir the shovel talk.
“This is… not as bad as expected, “ Kadir mentioned to Maryse as they stood to the side watching the festivities take place “not as chaotic,” Kadir smiled, placing a hand on Maryse’s shoulder.
Maryse leaned into the touch, “well, of course, these are my kids.”
“Maryse,” Kadir chided her playfully.
Maryse sighed. “I know, I know, I’m surprised as well all the chaos in our lives, this is nice.”
She took his hand and pulled him to the table where their family awaited.
