Any comment on the recent casting news for the Kent family in Superman (2025) ?
Two camps with reaction to the news: either Gunn is casting no-names and revealing it this lately because he plans on using them in the future more, and thus doesn't want expensive options, or the Kents will barely be in the movie (and will probably die). I personally think that Pa is definitely going to die as the emotional climax of the movie, evoking All-Star.
Tumblr media
Superman will have to choose between his Pa or saving everyone else, and he'll of course choose to save everyone else. But losing his father will give the audience a reason to emotionally care about the big CGI battles with the Engineer or Ultraman or whatever.
As for the casts themselves, I'm fine with them. Ma looks like you'd expect, Pa on the other hand definitely evokes a Midwestern farmer more than Pas typically do. Let's hope that if Gunn does opt for a "wise old Pa consoling Clark" scene that it manages to pull that off without infantilizing Clark. It could easily go bad, I've seen soooooooo many people asking for basic bitch pep talks where Clark comes home crying that Lex called him a slur and Pa gives a speech about how life is hard but you gotta keep going. Ugh, spare me from that please. I trust Gunn to do something more compelling than that.

My DC Cinematic Universe: Superman (Part III)
Tumblr media
Chapter Three: American Gothic
We're gonna start this one by breaking into my idea for my movie, set to introduce a new Superman to a DC Cinematic Universe of my making. James Gunn, who's currently writing his Superman film, has been saying pretty ardently that this won't be an origin movie. And that's wise, in my opinion. We've had two Superman origin films, so why have a third in the docket. I think some of that should apply to the other members of the Trinity (Batman and Wonder Woman), but let's not get to far ahead of ourselves. In fact, I'll just say this: the origin story extent within the Trinity is gonna be on a three-part spectrum. Batman won't get any origin story stuff at all, Wonder Woman will get a LOT of origin story stuff (because I'll be changing some things significantly, compared to the Jenkins film), and Superman...well, he's in the middle. But OK, enough preamble; here's how this is kicking off.
Our film is going to take place mostly in Metropolis, from the jump. Because of that, there won't be much or any of the Kent Farm outside of brief scenes. In fact, the first time we see our Kents will be when they come to visit Clark in his Metropolis apartment. He'll have gotten a fairly new apartment, due to an improved status and salary at the Daily Planet, and that'll be an excuse for the Kents to visit their son (whom they're constantly worried about). I'll talk about what happens to the Kents over the course of this theoretical film as we go along, but just know for now that we'll be seeing them interact with Clark for the first time in Metropolis, not Smallville.
Since we're meeting the Kents now, let's talk about them right quick, one at a time, starting with...
Tumblr media
Jonathan Kent: Farmer Until (Inevitable) Death
The Kents go WAY back to the Civil War, and are some of the first settlers of Kansas, according pervious DC Comics lore. Having settled the Smallville farm at least 100 years ago, they're the very definition of the American farmer. Because of this, Jonathan Kent is a dedicated farm-man, and has all the trappings of such. A traditionalist in some ways, and progressive in others, Jonathan believes in truth, justice, and the American way whole-heartedly, and his moral compass is a major influence on Clark's moral compass as an adult. It's pretty safe to say that ever Jonathan Kent is a hero to his adopted son, and I understand why. He was a good and loving father, who only wanted the best for his son, while also being aware that his son was meant for greater things.
But that said...Jonathan's characterization has danced around those points pretty considerably. In my opinion, the core tenets of Jonathan Kent are as follows:
He will do anything for his wife. Jonathan and Martha are one of the most loving and enduring couples in comic books, and their relationship is what Clark (and most other people) see as the ideal middle-aged/elderly couple. Jonathan takes his wedding vows as seriously as his life, and his love for his wife is still deeper than the ocean depths. It's sweet.
He will do anything for his son. Jonathan would be proud of Clark no matter what he did, but the fact that his son is a successful reporter and Superman makes him the proudest father that's ever lived. Only the fear of ruining his son's and Martha's life prevents him from shouting his son's secret from the mountaintops, just so the universe can love his son as much as he does. Oh, and one more thing: Clark is his son. Period.
His moral compass is as lawful good as you can get. You know how I said Clark would and should be aware that morality is in greyscale? Yeah, Jonathan believes in black-and-white, right vs. wrong, full stop. His moral compass is as monochromatic as it gets. Maybe that's him being old-fashioned; maybe it's him being isolated from larger populations...who knows? But to Jonathan Kent, right is right, and wrong is wrong. Period.
He has pretty severe heart problems. ...You'll see.
Tumblr media
While I'd love to go into Jonathan's interesting comic book history, I'll save it for myself. However, if you're curious, my favorite Jonathan Kent story takes place mostly in Adventures of Superman #500 (1993), which happens in the fallout of The Death of Superman story, as well as being the first issue of the Reign of the Supermen story. It's also one of the few comics I physically own, and I treasure the SHIT out of it for various reasons. Anyway, check it out if you're curious! However, the first time you Jonathan in that issue, it hints as a recurring theme of his...and I'll get to that.
OK, so, Jonathan Kent adaptations real quick! Technically, Jonathan first appeared in Superman: The Movie, played by Golden Age superstar Glenn Ford. While he wasn't in the film for very long, the main thing he's remembered for is giving Clark advice about his role on Earth...and then dying of a massive heart attack immediately after that. This prompts a young Clark, eventually, into becoming the hero his dad dreamed he could be.
After this version of the character, DC rebooted its continuity in Crisis on Infinite Earths, bringing the Kents back to life in the universe's present day. Oh, uh...did I forget to mention that the Kents are fucking dead in the original comics? Yeah, we only met them in Superboy comics, which is...another story entirely. Anyway, after this, the Kent also appeared in media again. They were in Superboy and Lois and Clark, but the most famous incarnation of Jonathan Kent came in Smallville.
Tumblr media
John Schneider's Jonathan Kent, to me and many, is THE Jonathan Kent. Still the family-oriented farmer, this Jonathan Kent comes with a few less years, a grudge against the Luthor family, and a massive anger issue. Still the supportive father, and still proud of Clark no matter what, he was a little more soap-opera-y than most versions, since...well, that's what Smallville was, to be honest. Financial issues, marital problems, etc. But still, he was a great father and a good man. So dedicated to his family was he, that he went to save his son from himself while Clark was being taken over by a supplanted Kryptonian version of himself (fucking...FUCKING DO NOT ASK), and made a deal with Jor-El in the process. This deal granted him power equivalent to Clark, because Smallville doesn't make sense. And in the process...it gave him heart problems. Time travel forward to episode 100 of the series and...yeah, Jonathan dies of a heart attack.
Seeing the pattern? Well, we haven't gotten to the dumbest example.
Tumblr media
...Fuck you Man of Steel. This stupid-ass movies ruins Jonathan Kent. Played by a piece of cardboard given sentience by the Blue Fairy by accident, AKA Kevin Costner, This version of Jonathan wants to protect his son by sheltering him until the time is juuuuuuuust right for him to come out, like a fucking souffle. A Souperflee, if you goddamn will. Because of this, there is a point in this film when, while talking to his young son, he argues that maybe, just maybe, Clark should've let a SCHOOLBUS FULL OF CHILDREN DROWN, just to keep his secret. Yeah, Jonathan would NEVER suggest that. Absolutely not. And then, to top it all off, the man stops his son from saving him from a FUCKING TORNADO, and dies in a manner so unintentionally funny, it has a Know Your Meme page about it. #stopmyinvincibleson.
Tumblr media
Well. In summary, Jonathan Kent is a farming man with strong morals and an intense devotion to family. And he always dies, or at the very least, almost dies. More of that later. For now, that's basically the summary. Now, let's talk about Mom.
Tumblr media
Martha Kent: More Than a Farmer's Wife
Ever since Crisis on Infinite Earths, Martha Kent has been a part of Clark's life in the past and present. Like Jonathan, she loves her son and her husband endlessly. However, where Jonathan's morality is unbent by the world around her, Martha is traditionally a bit more practical. She's the grounding presence and the heart of the Kent household, as well as pretty much being the traditional stay-at-home mother character. Her core character traits, to me, are as follows:
Martha is a caring mother and wife. 'Nuff said.
...Shit. That actually might be it.
Yeah, unfortunately, Martha both does and doesn't get a lot of attention in the comics. I guess I could just say that Martha is compassionate and caring, for anybody who needs her help. She's taken in most people positively affiliated with the Superman mythos, especially Superboy (Conner Kent) and Krypto the Superdog, for starters. Other than that, though, you can play around with Martha a bit. And that's what the various adaptations have done with her.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, even though Martha's appeared in Superman: The Movie (played by Phyllis Thaxter), and Lois and Clark (played by K Callan), Martha hadn't had a lot of import in the mythos, outside of usually being the person who made Clark's iconic Superman suit. But then, Smallville came along with Annette O'Toole in the role, and this made the character WAY more dynamic. Now from high society Metropolis originally, she became a college-educated working mom, who started the series by managing the financial details of the farm. By the time the series ended, a widowed Martha Kent had been a United States Senator, a leading member of the covert-ops government agency Checkmate, and had remarried Perry White! Martha Kent is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated characters Smallville ever produced. And even though she was able to do ALL of those things, she never dipped into Mary Sue territory. She was just always...honestly, she was just always a good mom.
Tumblr media
And honestly, so is MAARTHAAAA...sorry, Diane Lane as the character in the Snyderverse films. Infamous in name specifically, Martha "WHYDIDYOUSAYTHATNAME" Kent remained on the farm, and is an independent woman who loves her son, while recognizing his importance. Not entirely my Martha Kent, but definitely not a bad version of the character. Better than Jonathan, anyway.
With all of that said, Martha is sort-of an open book as these characters go. My version will be the caring mom who grounds Jonathan and Clark in reality, while allowing and inspiring them to reach for the stars. Also, she'll be involved in town matters, taking the politics angle from Smallville a bit more proactively.
And now, with THAT said...
Tumblr media
My Jonathan and Martha Kent
As I said before, in my theoretical film, the Kents won't interact physically with Clark until they get to Metropolis. We'll see the farm itself, possibly while Clark and the Kents are on the phone with each other, talking about their upcoming visit, but the Kents will visit Clark in his new apartment, both alive and well. They'll also serve as a part of Clark's personal journey of discovery in this film, because they represent his earthly origins. See, we'll find out early on that while Clark does know a bit about Krypton and his origins, he's almost entirely in the dark about much of his past. There's no Fortress of Solitude, no communication from the dead, not even the names of his parents. So, a visit from the only parents he knows is welcomed.
But then, while the Kents are in Metropolis, the main villains of the piece strike. These villains, whose names will remain unsaid until later posts, have a weapon that SUperman has never seen before: Kryptonite. And yes, I know that Kryptonite has its own over-usage, but we'll get to that later. But Kryptonite, in this case, is meant to be a symbol of a piece of home that Clark doesn't know about or understand. Somebody else understands it, and has armed out villains with it. After a big climactic fight, Clark's going to be in recovery, cared for by his parents. While in recovery, Martha will give Clark an early homecoming present. They'd found it in his old room recently, and had forgotten about it. Said item is a crystal-laden necklace, which was the only thing he had on him as an infant in the ship. And when the now-adult and injured Clark makes contact with it, the device activates and creates an electronic pulse that rattles the apartment and shuts down all electronics. And detecting a comatose Clark, it also beams a message into his own mind.
And with that...it's time to talk about Krypton. Hoo boy.

Dust Storm | W.H.B.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: You and Billy get caught up in a dust storm while on a horse ride.
pairing: William H. Bonney x fem!reader
includes: slight angst, fluff, you and billy are engaged, not a lot of warnings 🤷‍♀️ let me know if i missed any !!
a/n: i had this sitting in my drafts for a billion years 😭 my bad bookies
Tumblr media
It had been days since that last dust storm blew in and the spirits in the small county of Talihina, Oklahoma were high. However, there was no rain insight. And with no rain, it left many farmers with empty fields, covered in dried-out dirt and sand. It especially hit the Ashford farm and ranch the hardest.
The Ashfords were the wealthiest family in Talihina. They were well known for being able to run a horse ranch and a healthy farm. The father, James Ashford, was in charge of both the ranch and farm, making sure everything ran smoothly. His wife, Josephina Ashford, better known as Jo, was known for helping around the town and giving to those in need. Luckily for the couple, they had two children who helped them with their work. They had a daughter and a son. You were the eldest Ashford child, and you had a bright future. You resemble your mother in all ways. You were the kind of woman to make young men turn their heads just by walking by. Unfortunately for them, you were happily engaged to one William H. Bonney. On the other hand, your younger brother looked like a replica of your father. Adam Ashford was eight years old with the same determination as his father, hoping to take over the farm and ranch when he got older.
But because of the dust storms starting up two years ago, it was harder to tend to the crops that would grow and bring the horses out of their stables. Before, you would help your father to tend to the horses when you weren't doing volunteer work, but with the constant dust blowing around the whole country, he banned you from leaving the house unless it was absolutely clear from dust. And for the first time in two years, James let his daughter out of the house. Only to run her mother’s errands, of course.
“In case of emergencies,” James tied a red bandana around your wrist as you took your mother’s list and woven basket from the kitchen table. “Wrap this around your head and cover your mouth and nose. I don’t want you to get hurt. And remember to come straight back from the markets—”
“Pa, I’ll be fine.” You squeezed her father’s forearm, kissing his cheek. “I’ll be back before you know it.”
He sighed and shook his head, “Okay.”
You squeezed his arm again before leaving, silently reassuring her safety. You took quick strides to the town center and watched the dust kick up with every step you took. The walk going to town wasn’t bad. The only downside was that there was no shelter for any incoming dust storms. Fortunately, the blazing sun was beating down on the earth and the wind was seemingly absent.
Upon reaching the town center you smiled at the sight in front of you. You found children running around with wooden toys their fathers made and their mothers gossiping about the recent family who left for California. It felt normal. For the first time in years, it felt normal to see mothers scolding their children for messing with drunkards sitting outside of the bars.
You shook your head before entering the town’s only grocery, the bell above the door ringing to alert the storekeeper. “Mr. Taylor?”
“Miss Ashford!” The storekeeper beamed at the young woman. “What brings you into town? I haven’t seen you and your folks for a while.”
You gave him a tight-lipped smile, “With all this dust, I would hardly expect anyone to be hustlin’ ‘round town.”
“What can I do for you?” He dismissed the comment.
“I’m in need of some of your delicious Fuji apples. My ma s'been craving them ever since Adam read a book about them to her.” You looked around the empty store. “Other than that, I can grab the res’ of the things myself.”
“I’ll be right back.” He knocked the wood on the counter, heading toward the back of the store. You watched him leave before heading into the different aisles, glancing at the brands and prices of the different items. In fact, you were so immersed in deciding which brand of vegetable oil would be best that you hadn’t realized someone new had entered the store until a pair of strong arms wrapped around you and spun you off the ground.
“Oh my god!” You clung onto the stranger’s arm, not wanting to fall face-first onto the ground. You glanced back at the stranger before gasping, eyes lighting up at the male. “Billy!”
“Afternoon, gorgeous.” He put you down and kissed your cheek.
You felt your face warm at the name and action, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear. “What are you doing here?”
“My ma sent me into town to get money from the bank.” Billy followed you around the store, his gaze flickering across your face. “Then I saw my favorite woman walk into town. I decided I could spare some time to talk to her.”
“Uh-huh.” You spun on your heel and peered into his eyes. “Did you get the money for your folks? Or did you forget?”
“You think so low of me, sweetheart.” He tilted your head up with his finger. “Of course I got the money.”
You hummed, giving him a proper look now. William H. Bonney was once a lanky boy in grade school. But he had definitely grown into himself. He got stronger and taller over the course of two years. The loose clothes he once wore now perfectly fit him, making you flush red each time you saw him. Your eyes then traveled from his fit shirt to his tattered, dust-covered boots. You frowned at the state they were in, but no one could do any better from the current weather the states were currently facing. Finally, you shifted your gaze to meet his eyes once more. His crystal blue eyes were such a beautiful contrast to the dust coating his dark jeans and his wavy brown hair. You swore you could get lost in them if it weren’t for him pulling you back to reality each time.
“You’re staring, gorgeous.” Billy grinned, earning a small scoff from his beloved.
“You’re impossible.” You shoved two bars of soap into your basket, heading toward the counter where the apples were waiting.
Mr. Taylor suppressed a laugh at the young couple, taking the basket from your arms. “That all for today, Miss Ashford?”
You hummed as you took your wallet out of your dress pocket, “How much?”
“$3.42 is the total.” He read off the cash register as you handed him the exact amount, trading it for the baskets of groceries and apples.
“Thank you, Mr. Taylor.” You smiled at him and moved to grab Billy’s hand as you left the store, intertwining them. “What’ve you been up to since I’ve last seen you?”
“Since last week?” Billy pulled you closer to him, squeezing your hand. “ Not much has happened since I visited your place. Just helping my ma in the fields like always.”
You nodded and looked toward the ground, watching the dust cling onto your leather boots and the bottom of your maroon dress. “The dust storm affecting your folks’ farm badly?”
“It’s affecting everyone, sweetheart.” He pulled you away from a stampede of running children. “No one can get any crops.”
“I know…” You muttered, rubbing small circles into his palm. You peered up at the bright sun, squinting at the beam. “You know what I wish for?”
“What?”
“I wish for everything to go back to normal.” You adjusted your hat, the Ashford ranch coming into view. “The dust storms have ruined everyone’s crops. I can barely step foot out of my own house. There hasn’t been any rain since god knows when. My pa won’t let me tend to the horses. It’s madness, Billy.”
“M’sorry, sweetheart.” He kissed the side of your head. “I can’t promise everything will go back to normal, but in the meantime, I can find a way to ride horses with you. ”
“William, what’s that supposed to mean?” You squinted at him, his piercing gaze meeting yours. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably not a good idea—!”
“Come on. We can ride the horses and be back before your folks worry.” He pulled you into the Ashford stables, taking the baskets from your arms and tucking them safely in a corner.
You bit your lip, looking at the groceries and then back at the brunette, cursing him for being so convincing. “Fine.”
Tumblr media
Laughter filled the air as you raced Billy through the back trails of Talihina, the generated wind blowing through your hair. It felt like you were both young teenagers who had no idea they were in love with one another, doing reckless activities until they were caught by one’s parents.
“Pick up the pace, Bonney!” You shouted as you saw Billy catching up, urging your horse to move faster.
A huge amount of dust kicked up with every stride the horses took, and if you looked back, you wouldn’t be able to see anything. Billy shook his head with a smile and copied you, finally riding beside the pair.
“Sweetheart, you know I can beat you in any horse race.” He chuckles as he brings his horse to a stop, wiping the sweat off his forehead. “You feel any better?”
You nodded and glanced to your left as you tugged on your horse’s reins, meeting his blue eyes. “I do feel better. Thank you.”
“Anytime.” He tipped his hat in your direction. “Ready to go back?”
Your smile slowly faded but nodded, “Yeah.”
“Hey, we don’t need to rush. We can take as long as we want to go back if you want.”
“I’d like that.” You guided your horse to head back toward the ranch. “In the meantime, you can tell me all about what you’re gonna do when your ma finds out where you’ve been all day.”
“I can tell her I’ve been with my girl all day.” He bit back a smirk when he saw your cheeks tint pink. “I think my folks love you more than me.”
You shoved his shoulder, your engagement ring glistening in the sun. “They should love me more than you. I think my Pa loves you more than me.”
“Impossible.” Billy took your hand and kissed the back of it.
The young couple took short strides on their horses as the sun slowly faded away. One could argue that the sun was setting, but it was still much too early for the sun to set.
“What time do you have on your watch?” You looked back at the darkening sky, picking up the pace.
“3 PM,” Billy muttered, looking into your panicked eyes. “We gotta go.”
The both of you started to rush your horses back as the wind picked up, dust blowing around them which impaired your vision. You hastily removed the bandana from your wrist and tied it around your head, keeping your balance. Billy kept one hand on the reins and shoved his own bandana up, covering his nose and mouth. The sky was now covered with dust clouds and the wind blew harshly against your backs, the mix of dry dirt and sand hitting their exposed skin.
“Are you okay over there?” Billy shouted over the blowing wind. “Y/N?”
“I’m fine!” You blinked away tears from the dirt that stung your eyes, squeezing your legs to make your horse move faster. You could just barely make out your family’s farm, but with each passing second it became more and more obscure.
“Sweetheart, we have to go to the stables! It’s closer to us than your house!” He veered his horse over to the left.
“I can’t! My folks will worry and—”
“Y/N!” He snaps you out of your spiraling thoughts. “Please!”
You quickly followed him and turned toward the stables. Billy slammed the front doors open, causing chaos to erupt inside. The other horses stood on their hind legs, thrashing as the harsh wind blew the dust inside. You raced inside as Billy jumped off his horse and slammed the stable doors shut, grabbing bales of wheat and shoving them by the front. You took deep breaths as you tried calming your own horse, resting your forehead against the head of your horse.
“This dust storm ain’t gonna go away anytime soon.” Billy rubbed dust off his face, removing his mask. “We’ll be fine in here.”
You nodded weakly, combing your fingers through your horse’s dusty hair. “We shouldn’t have gone out— I-I promised my pa that I’d be back—”
“Hey, look at me.” He went over and took your fidgeting hand. “They’ll be fine. We’ll be fine. When the storm eventually calms down, we'll head over to your place.” He slowly helped you off the horse and held your dirtied face in his hands, slipping your bandana off and wiping your muddy tears. “Okay?”
“Okay.” You took a breath, holding onto his wrists, following his breathing pattern. You rested your forehead on his, shutting your eyes. “Okay.”
Tumblr media
The dust storm only accumulated as time progressed. The field and crops were covered in piles of dust once more and the automobiles were suddenly buried underneath the dried dirt. Those who were inside any buildings had dust seeping through the smallest slivers, despite the taped downed windows and towels blocking the doors. It was as if the storm would never stop, deeply worrying the Ashford family for their daughter’s safety.
“James, you can’t leave!” Jo whispered toward her husband, arms crossed over her chest in disbelief. “It’s late and you wouldn’t be able to see anything with all of that dust blowin’. Adam worries for his sister, but imagine the grief if he lost his pa and his sister?”
“I can’t sleep without knowin’ if my little girl is fine, Jo,” James argued, tightly tying a handkerchief around his head. “If Adam wakes, don’t tell him where his pa went—”
“James!” She held his arm in desperation, holding eye contact. “The storm might end soon, don’t risk it.” She looked between his eyes as he glanced toward the backdoor. “Please.”
His gaze softened at his wife’s demeanor and pulled her into a hug. “I’ll wait.”
“Thank you.” She murmured, wrapping her arms around him. “When the storm dies down, you can go. I won’t stop you then… I worry about our little girl too.”
Tumblr media
The storm kept blowing until early morning. The crops were now either torn out of the ground or buried deep within dry dirt and families had given up on keeping the dust out of their homes. James and Josephina Ashford fell asleep at their kitchen table waiting for the storm to pipe down while you fell asleep in the stables in the security of your lover’s arms. William H. Bonney, on the other hand, stayed awake. He was constantly listening for the winds to quiet to let you know you could head home. In the early hours of the new day, Billy gently shook the woman beside him awake.
“Sweetheart, wake up.” He brushed the dust off that had fallen on you overnight, watching you shift closer to him. “Gorgeous.”
“Give me a minute, William.” You groaned, using his government name as a threat.
He chuckled and sat up straight, bringing you along with him. “The storm stopped, you can go home now.”
Your eyes shot open and you looked over at the male incredulously. “You should’ve said that first, idiot. Let’s go.”
Billy smiled as he stood, helping you up. He shook the final bits of dust off as best as he could and moved the hay bales away from the doors. Billy tilted his head toward you, silently signaling you to head home. You grinned and picked up your dress, racing over to the house without stumbling. You burst into the house and discarded the dust entering as well, finding your parents standing by the kitchen’s backdoor. James had his handkerchief tied across his face, triggering your tears.
“Y/N.” Her father let out a breath of relief and engulfed you in a tight hug. “You’re safe. You’re okay.”
“I’m sorry.” You sobbed into your father’s shirt, clinging onto him. “I’m so sorry, pa.”
“Why are you crying, sweet girl?” He rubbed your face. “What’s wrong?”
“I didn’t go straight home. I wanted to be out more, so I-I rode on the horses with Billy an-and then the storm started up. I shouldn’t have gone. I should’ve gone home right away. I should’ve stayed home. I shouldn’t have—”
“Hey, you’re alright.” James sat you down in one of the wooden chairs, removing his handkerchief from his face. “You’re safe. You’re home.”
You sniffled, looking up at your mother who had tears in her eyes too. “I’m sorry, mama. I didn’t wanna worry you…”
“My baby,” She knelt on the ground, taking your hands in her own. “I’m just glad you’re safe. The worst didn’t happen. You’re here. You aren’t hurt.”
Billy knocked on the side of the wall, making his presence known. In return, all heads whipped over to him. “I brought the groceries your daughter bought the other day.”
“William, come over here.” Your father beckoned him over.
“Yes, sir?” Billy stood by your side, removing his hat.
James sighed, putting his hand out. “Thank you for watching over my daughter.”
“Anytime.” Billy shook his hand, bringing him in for a hug. “I would risk my life for your daughter every single time.”
You lightly sock his arm at the mention, lacing your hands together. “Thank you.”
“I mean, now that you’re here, why don’t you help clear the dust out of our house? I’m sure my daughter has brought in heaps of it from runnin’ in here.” Jo patted her future son-in-law’s shoulder.
You flushed red as Billy chuckled, feeling him squeeze your hand at the comment. “Of course, Mrs. Ashford.”
The young couple got to work clearing out the dust while Jo and James started preparing breakfast for the day. It would be a while until all the dust would clear out of the house completely, but it wasn’t the worst problem they had. The dust storm that day might have ended, but little did the Ashford family know that it would only be the true beginning of their hardships.

FIRST DANCE SONGS
DC various x Reader
Tumblr media
Just some of my favs and what I think their first dances at their wedding would be like. What song they would choose, if they’d cry or not, etc.
Reader is gender neutral.
Contains: wedding dances, romantic relationship between character and reader, a shit ton of fluffy mushy thoughts, DC men are allowed to cry because yes.
Tumblr media
Clark Kent — Easy choice; Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley. I can imagine this song being Jonathan and Martha Kent’s song when they got married. He has a 60% chance of crying; 70% if he catches a glimpse of Ma and Pa holding hands, softly singing the lyrics to each other. There’s also a game that wedding DJs will sometimes do to see which guests have been married the longest (if you aren’t familiar, they’ll call up all of the married guests to dance, and they’ll periodically say, “if you’ve been married for X amount of years, sit down.”), so I can imagine At Last by Etta James beginning to play after your first dance, and you and Clark would be smiling as you watch the last couple standing; Jonathan and Martha Kent.
Bruce Wayne — Just Breathe by Pearl Jam, and he’s 100% crying. That’s what happens when you make eye contact with a misty-eyed Alfred. He wouldn’t do any fancy spinning or dipping with you because he’s too busy holding you close (both to hide the fact that he’s crying and because he never wants to let go). Other songs that may start playing afterwards range from Check Yes, Juliet by We The Kings and Super Bass by Nicki Minaj (a surprise for the both of you). Also, a picture of your first dance may or may not end up on the cover of some tabloid magazine, despite any of your efforts to keep your wedding from the public’s eye.
Hal Jordan — No one was surprised to hear Stand By Me by Ben E. King start playing for your first dance. However, what they were surprised by was how watery Hal’s eyes were. He has a 50% chance of crying during your first dance, though he’d cover it up by laughing as he let you goofily twirl him around. The last minute or so would just be you two with your arms around each other, foreheads touching, eyes filled with love and adoration for each other… and then the beginning of Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey would cause you two to collapse into each other with fond laughter. Expect to see Hal absolutely shred the air guitar.
Dick Grayson — You’d probably have to get through a few ABBA songs before your first dance (because Dick is The Dancing Queen™), but it’s worth it when All of Me by John Legend starts up. I’d love to think that the two of you have slow-danced to this song under the stars as a date, so of course you two would agree on this song. Has a 75% chance of crying (despite crying earlier during the actual ceremony) because you’re just so stunning to him while you sway in each other’s arms. He’d probably want a more upbeat song to play afterwards, like La Da Dee by Cody Simpson or Sugar by Maroon 5, and he’ll absolutely dramatically sing the lyrics to you.
Jason Todd — A lot about your wedding may differ depending on if Jason is comfortable with an actual ceremony or not, but one thing that stays consistent is Falling Like the Stars by James Arthur as your first dance song. He’d probably have a 30% chance of crying in front of other people, but if your wedding something more private, that number easily spikes up to 80%. Be prepared to be held tight against him. Heck, he might not let you go even after the song ends. If you have a traditional wedding, he’d have an arm around you as the two of you sit down and watch everyone else dance to Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen.
Tim Drake — I can see First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes being your song. Tim’s not exactly a dancer, so it may be the two of you just swaying back and forth, but he’d gladly let a spin or two happen if it makes your face light up. The odds of him crying are pretty low at 25%, meaning the most you’ll probably see is the slightest shimmer in his eyes (but Cassie, Bart, Kon, and Dick are 100% in shambles as you two dance). He’ll stare at you with complete adoration, contempt with just being with you, along with a giant smile gracing his lips for the duration of your dance. Something punk-rock/emo like Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down by Fallout Boy has to be the follow-up song. I don’t make the rules.
Wally West — Because I imagine your first date being a Disney movie marathon, Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John fits perfectly. He’d probably hum the melody while bringing your foreheads together, eyes sparkling if you hum along with him. Be prepared to be twirled or dipped unexpectedly (he loves catching you by surprise). I’d say there’s a 50% chance of him crying, since he might be able to hold it together until something preppier plays like Shut Up and Dance by WALK THE MOON (and yes, much like Dick, he’ll dramatically sing the lyrics to you). You two will do so many goofy dance moves together, I can guarantee it.
Victor Stone — “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is an underrated movie date idea, which is why I declare your first dance song to be Moon River by Audrey Hepburn. Slow dancing with Vic is so soft; he’ll gently sway with you and hold you so delicately. Not a big crier, so you’re at a 40% chance of that, but it’ll easily jump up to 60% if you rest your head against his shoulder or chest. Afterwards, I can totally see something like Without You by David Guetta playing. The energy on the dance floor would go from 0 to 100 when the chorus hits, everyone jumping on the dance floor like it’s a concert, while you and Vic spin each other around with warm laughter.
Kara Danvers — A few Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson songs later, you’d find yourselves dancing to Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. It’s a classic, and I can totally see you two having your first kiss at an ice cream parlor with this playing in the background. I’d say there’s a 45% chance of you seeing happy tears in Kara’s eyes. There’d be a big smile on her face as she let you spin her, your arms wrapping around each other. And of course Teenage Dream by Katy Perry plays afterwards. Clark will come up to you two with a teary congratulations, and you’ll start doing a goofy three-way dance, and that somehow evolves into a giant conga line with Clark in the lead.
Jaime Reyes — I have this feeling that Jaime gets really insecure about himself, so Corazón Sin Cara by Prince Royce is the natural choice. It’s a reminder that you’ll love him as he is, just as he’ll love you as you are. While there’s a 60% of him full-on crying, there’s a 100% chance of him getting teary-eyed at the lyric, “solo sé que yo te quiero así” (I only know that I love you like this). He’s big on hand holding — he loves to rub his thumb over the back of your hand — so he’ll have at least one of your hands in his through the entire dance. After Royce fades out, I can see either Kiss You by One Direction playing, or Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley (you both forgot about the conversation you had about how funny Rick Rolling your guests would be… effectively Rick Rolling yourselves).
Zatanna Zatara — Like I’m Gonna Loose You by Meghan Trainor has that swing sound that Zee loves to dance to. She’d get a little playful with dips and spins, but that’s only to cover up the fact that she’s at a 75% of crying; you can tell by her breathy chuckles as she rests her head against your shoulder. I think it would be really cute if she did a spell to make the air sparkle like fireflies around you two near the beginning of the song. And she’ll definitely whisper an I love you backwards to you, something I’m sure you’d be familiar with in your relationship. Also, Magic by B.o.B was suggested by you as a joke, but Zatanna was like, “that’s actually so good,” so that’s the song playing afterwards. Whoops.

“Fast and Fabulous: A Driven Love”
---- A love story between a Formula 1 Driver and a Supermodel
Chapter 2 (Prev. Chapter) Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5. Chapter 6
Pairing: Carlos Sainz!Formula 1 Driver x Famous Supermodel!Reader
Words: 727 words
Warnings: Fluff, major plot twist at the end hahaha, mentions of F1, timeline in the story starts at 2021, translated filipino :>
Proofread!!
Summary: An Evening with The Dela Cruz Family
Pots, pans, and utensils clatter around the kitchen of the Dela Cruz house. Your mother groaned, putting down the knife she used to chop the potatoes. You could see the anger in her eyes when your father came home to work as he entered the house.
"Hi, honey."
 Your father grins nervously as he smiles at your mother. You and your brother turn your heads from the TV as you look at your father, holding your laughs. You could hear the nervousness from your father's voice.
“Ano ba yan Jean! Ilang beses na ah! No shoes diyos ko! (What is that Jean! How many times already! No shoes my God!)”
Your mother loudly scoffed, approaching your father and glaring at him.
 "I know, mon amour, and I'm so sorry, and I am also sorry for being late."
 Your father chuckles nervously, approaching your mother. He hugs her, rubbing her back, trying to calm her down.
"Now, mon amour, care to tell me why you're so mad? Other than me?.” Your father flashed a bright smile.
"Pretty sure all you, Dad."
 Mark laughed, sitting up from the couch as he patted his father's shoulder.
"Mark!" Your mother glared at him, making him laugh even more.
"Ay, I'm sorry, ma.; here, let me help you cook." Mark smiled softly, heading to the kitchen to continue his mother's left-off cooking.
"Sometimes I forget mama is half Filipino and half Spanish."
 Pao snickered, watching you and your Kuya James (older brother) play F1 21'.
"Isa ka pa Paolo! (You are another one, Paolo!)."
Your mother pulled away from the hug with your father as she glared at Pao.
"AH! Ma! You are the most beautiful woman, and I love you very much."
Pao's eyes widened at his mother's yelling; he sat up, approached her, and hugged her.    Your mom snickered, wrapping his arms around Pao and hugging him.
"You know I don't like you coming home late." Your mother pouted at your father, still hugging Pao.
"I know, mon amour, and I'm sorry, we just had so many meetings."
Your father apologized, kissing your mother's cheek and making your mother smile.
"Oh hey there, honey." Your father smiled, seeing you, sitting next to you.
"Hi there, father." You giggle, smiling, putting the PS4 controller down.
"Ah, playing F1 21'?" Your father smiled at you and James.
"Our little girl is excited to finally attend her first F1 race." James chuckled, pinching your cheek.
"Well, it's good honey that the race we're attending is at Monza; I picked it out for you cause I know you're such a Ferrari fan."
 Your father smiled, opening his arms. Smiling happily, you bury your face in his chest, sighing contentedly.
"Thank you, Dad." you smile, looking up at your father.
You couldn't be happier; you've been an F1 fan for many years, yet you've never attended a race. The reason you always gave was that you were busy, especially as a supermodel, which is true, but you were scared. More than worried, you never knew why. This was how you always felt, but that didn't matter anymore; attending your first race is great, and now you're excited. Your brothers attended races except for Pao; it was both your first.
The Dela Cruz family is a complete sports fan, except when picking teams to support, especially in Formula 1. Your father and three older brothers supported Mercedes. They always have and always will. While you were a Ferrari fan, solid, as in, and then Pao, who is the complete polar opposite of you. He was a Red Bull fan, which is crazy, and you keep saying that to him.
Soon, Your thoughts were disturbed by a long, loud flush of the toilet coming from the bathroom, causing everyone to look at the door. Laughing as they saw your other older brother, Kuya Dan (older brother), come out of the bathroom, chuckling nervously.
"What's up? Oh hey, dad,"  He laughs, noticing your father as he smiles, sitting beside him.
“Tagal mo tumae boi (you took so long to poop boi)”
“Aba sino ka dyan, tagal mo din mag cr (Ah who are you there, you take long in the cr too) Dan rolled his eyes, sticking his tongue out at Pao.
“O sya tama na yan, let’s eat! (Oh that’s enough, let’s eat!) Your mother laughs.

Skyfall | Kylian Mbappé
Pairing: Kylian Mbappé | OC
Tumblr media
As she gazed out of the window, her eyes lingered on the sprawling cityscape of Paris below, a tapestry of lights and shadows. With a resolute heart, she made a silent vow to herself - to live fiercely, to be the champion for those silenced in the shadows. The path ahead was fraught with challenges, but her resolve was unyielding, a debt of honor to the one who believed in her when doubt cast its long shadow. He had been her mentor, her guardian; he had taken her under his protective wing at a time when skepticism clouded her every step. His unwavering presence had been her fortress, standing valiantly by her side, a solitary defender against a sea of naysayers in those echoing halls of judgment that was the Assas.
A solitary tear, a crystal testament to her inner turmoil, traced a path down her cheek, caressing her skin like a whisper of the past. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, inhaling deeply, though the city's air was tinged with the bitter notes of reality, but mostly pollution (and was that piss?). A sudden, sharp cough, rattled her body, breaking the spell of her reverie. A rueful smile touched her lips as she mused on the cinematic trope of the enigmatic lawyer, solitary and contemplative, gazing out over a city - a scene far more inspiring in a James Bond movie than in real life.
With a finger raised towards the dark sky, the young woman whispered a prayer into the night. 'Vae victis,' she breathed, her words a soft caress against the chaos of the world, 'woe to the conquered.' Her whispered incantation rode the winds, a spectral force, stirring an unseen tremor that resonated through the city, a silent herald to those who would stand against her.
Chapter One
August 12th, 2023
Parc des Princes
8:00 p.m.
One hour before kickoff, Laila was seated in the office of President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, wishing he would just get to the point. She had to admit, Kylian Mbappé possessed an almost uncanny ability to send the club's president into bouts of extreme hypertension. The obsession with the young French star seemed borderline obsessive to Laila, almost creepy. She often marveled at how Mbappé managed to maintain his composure and resist the urge to confront the old geezer. From a business standpoint, however, she could grasp why the PSG president was so adamant about retaining the French prodigy; after all, money makes the world go round.
Despite her desires to be anywhere else, fate had different plans. Her late mentor had insisted that she start her so-called mission with the French football club for reasons he didn’t entirely foreclose. It was in these moments, she felt a deep kinship with Harry Potter who also had a mentor who seemed to leave the world with more questions than answers despite the world going to shit. Even from beyond the grave, he seemed to enjoy watching her struggle in this unexpected role. Being a lawyer for PSG was far from what her teenage self had envisioned for her future. But such was life.
“Je ne peux pas croire qu’après tout ce que nous avons fait pour ce connard, il ne veut pas renouveler. Il veut quoi de plus put-” the president grumbled in his accented french.
The words tumbled out of Laila before she could stop them, her frustration with the president's incessant complaints reaching its peak. Sometimes, he acted like a petulant child.
“Et alors, c’est de ma faute ça ?” President Al-Khelaifi retorted defensively.
(As usual, the president didn’t want to discuss anything that put him in a bad light)
“Peut-être que la première chose à faire serait de lui dire qu’il ne sera plus dans le loft?”
“Oui, oui, dis-lui qu’il peut revenir, mais je veux qu’il reste. C’est compris?”
“Sí, señor,” she replied sarcastically, exiting the room swiftly as she noticed President Al-Khelaifi’s eye begin to twitch.
As Laila stepped out of the president's office, she let out a deep sigh and made her way down to the Salon Louvre. Truly, Nasser should’ve been smarter than this but money does have a way of blinding a person. Regardless, she had a job to do and if it meant that she had to play Nasser’s little games, she would do it. Laila knew exactly what the end goal was and she wasn’t going to get distracted.
As she made her way to the Salon Louvre, where Chef Arnault had promised to reserve some of his renowned crème fraîche and caviar deviled eggs for her, she couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement for the match. Parc des Princes always pulsated with infectious energy and passion, which she adored. The stadium itself was incredible, and the Ultras knew how to light up a stadium. Every time she scrolled through Twitter or Instagram, she saw the tifos they made. The huge banners were truly works of art, and she deeply admired and respected the fans for the effort they put into them.
Her thoughts drifted to her three musketeers, her closest friends, and how carefree they had been before life's harsh realities had intruded. She reminisced about that summer night of August 14th, 2021, when they had come to watch PSG vs Racing Club de Strasbourg, the first match after COVID restrictions were lifted. How different things were back then. She yearned to reconnect and mend the fractures time had caused, but deep down, she knew it was perhaps a futile wish. With her eyes brimming with unshed tears, Laila wandered through the hallways leading to the salon, lost in her memories. Absorbed in her thoughts, she didn't notice the figure in front of her and walked straight into what felt like a very warm wall.
“Tabarnak-,” she swore, instinctively rubbing her nose.
“Pardon, mademoiselle,” a voice apologized.
Startled, Laila looked up and found herself face to face with the French captain. Flustered, she took a step back, momentarily at a loss for words. Kylian Mbappé stood before her, and she couldn't help but notice how strikingly handsome he was. Dressed casually in a white Dior t-shirt and paired with stylish brown pants, which complemented his athletic build. His confident posture and the easy smile playing on his lips added to his striking appearance. He naturally carried a certain air of charisma that left her with a dry throat and a racing heart.
And God, those dimples...
How was she supposed to argue with this living reincarnation of big dick energy? Much less, convince him that he would be better off staying in a club where it was quite unlikely that he would ever win a Champions League, forget a Ballon d’Or. Her professor was so lucky to be lounging in the afterlife, because when she did find him, she would make him pay for putting her in this situation.
Kylian's gaze met Laila's, a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes at her evident surprise. "You okay?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.
"Yeah, just... wasn't expecting a human roadblock," Laila joked, trying to mask her nervousness. The corners of his mouth twitched in a smile, those famous dimples making a brief appearance.
"I've been called worse," he chuckled. Kylian's smile took on a knowing edge, his gaze sharp yet playful. "So, Laila Soltani, the lawyer Nasser has brought in to convince me to stay at PSG, eh?"
Laila's eyes widened slightly,  her eyebrows arching in surprise."Yes, that's me. How did you know?"
Kylian leaned in slightly, a playful grin spreading across his face. “See, now I’m more inclined to be offended. Athletes can read too, you know?” he teased, nodding towards her badge.
Laila felt her cheeks warm. “Oh, n-no, that’s not... I mean, I wasn’t—” she stammered, her words tumbling over each other in her fluster.
He laughed, a light, easy sound that seemed to echo around them. “I’m just messing around with you. Besides, it’s not every day the president hires someone specifically to deal with me. You must be quite persuasive.”
Laila laughed, a sound more relaxed than she felt. "I'll take that as a compliment, Mr. Mbappé. But yes, that's why I’m here, in part. Though, convincing someone of your caliber to stay... that's a tall order. My greatest adversary so far."
Kylian's eyes glinted with amusement. "Greatest adversary, huh? Sounds like you’re ready for battle. Just remember, I'm not so easily swayed."
"Oh, we'll see about that," Laila retorted, her own eyes sparkling with the challenge. "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve."
He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Looking forward to it, Mademoiselle. May the best person win."
With a final chuckle, Kylian turned and strode away, leaving Laila to ponder the intriguing encounter. She shook her head, a smile lingering on her lips, and continued her journey to the salon Louvre. As she entered, she was immediately greeted by the buzz of fans, whose enthusiasm seemed to infect her immediately. The modern design boasted a sleek and refined look, with geometric light fixtures casting a constellation of warm, ambient light across the polished floor.
She found Chef Arnault behind the mini bar, a silver-maned sage in the world of haute cuisine. With the twinkle of seasoned joy in his clear blue eyes, he beckoned Laila over with a broad grin that seemed to know more than it let on.
"Well, well, if it isn't our lawyer," he teased, the light in his eyes matching the mischief in his tone as he took in her flushed appearance. "You look like you've just spent the whole evening sweating in a sauna. Let me guess, Mbappé charm in action?"
Laila rolled her eyes, but the corners of her mouth turned upward involuntarily. "Is it that obvious?"
"Only to those who know," he chuckled, presenting her with a plate of deviled eggs, each a small culinary work of art with creamy filling and a crown of caviar. "Here, I made these just for you. They might just give you the boost you need for the evening to deal with the capitaine."
Laila decided to just brush off Arnault's teasing and, not wanting to wait another second, she tossed back a whole deviled egg. The taste was amazing—so good it almost made her moan right there at the bar.
With a quick thanks to the chef, she slipped through the crowd of fans as she heard Michel Montana's voice encouraging the Ultras to cheer for the team. Their chatter was just noise against the hum in her head as she moved to her seat. It was pretty close to the president's spot, giving her an incredible view of the field.
She dropped into her seat, taking in the low buzz of the stadium and the distant echo of the players getting their game faces on. The excitement was kicking in. This wasn't just another day at the office for Laila; it was like stepping onto a chessboard where every move counted. The match was about to start, and she wasn't just thinking about the football. It was game time on all fronts.

What did Caitriona say about Christian Bale after working with him?!
Dear Christian Bale Anon,
I just wrote 'notoriously difficult'. I never implied she said anything along those lines herself. But your OTT reaction immediately unmasked you, dear Stan Militia Anon.
It took me exactly 30 seconds to Google find the most interesting public statements she made about working with Bale and Damon on set:
Namely, a Sarina Bellissimo podcast for the Irish radio station Spin FM, on November 19, 2019:
This statement resumes it all - but it still makes for an interesting listen (has it been posted before? I suppose it must have, her Stans will post every single shred she ever uttered):
Tumblr media
Plus, on the very same day, an interview for Steven Weintraub's Collider (https://collider.com/caitriona-balfe-interview-ford-v-ferrari-outlander-season-5/), which reads along the same lines:
Tumblr media
And then, you have this:
youtube
Bale is mentioned around the 0:23 mark and I have to say, the contrast with all the rest of the interview is palpable. She is tense and a bit uneasy. Body language is a bitch, I know.
That being said, remember (LOL) these are public statements. What exactly did you want or expect her to say? And, if I may add, what exactly did you want or expect me to say, too?
Ignore your submission? Lie about it - and give you the opportunity to brownnose me in public?
You probably don't know me, Anon. Also, use your logic: she sounded very enthusiastic about her experience with him, on set - I'll give you this and again, this is absolutely polite, civilized, normal, expected (insert anything you want here, really). But it takes two to tango, don't you think?
Well...How about this cast Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival's screening (September 10, 2019)? I think the real dynamic is showing and mind you: he never mentioned C, his screen wife. Who stood almost next to him, on stage: her expression is interesting to analyze, perhaps halfway between being starstruck and keeping a brave face:
youtube
Not a single time. And barely, if at all, in all the other interviews. And I am not very sure he even looks at her while she's talking (he isn't reacting to her infectious laughing, so long for the fish). This guy presents himself as a sociopathic boor.
Sidenote: funny thing that a new bride talks about the importance of marriage teamwork and mentions Ma and Pa. I rest my case.
Back to our topic, I have to say the Irish press didn't seem to like Bale at all. Irish Central, for example, is very kind to C, but less so to Bale (https://www.irishcentral.com/opinion/caitriona-balfe-ford-v-ferrari):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I gave you enough attention for today. Now go take this answer elsewhere. On your own page (remember the address?) or as an Anon to the Amateur Eugenicist. She loves those slap-a-shipper, cheap gossip wares. She'll probably publish you.

Ok but Krypton!lives au but clark isn't some jerk alien prince, he is a brat no doubt but he's also just so oblivious to everything. Have some of my headcanons for this:
•I imagine it starting with kal el dropping down on Kansas farm [grown up and shit] being found by the Kents as they patch him up and take him down on the guest room, he wakes up freaks out a bit speaking in kryptonian and just floating around the house being overly careful of everything, ma and pa kent are confused and so is Kal, he tries to communicate with them and they finally find a common ground and after a month clark finally learns the human language.
•zod has managed to exile kal from his home planet, suffice to say kal el is currently heartbroken and looking for help
•Kal just saw some random pair of glasses and thought they were so cool so now he just wears them whenever he's in casual clothes but is in no way trying to hide his identity, people are just that dumb.
•Does not get social cues at all and will unwillingly say the wrong thing at the wrong time, he's just a happy little guy who wants to explore this strange planet and then go home
•he particularly likes rock music despite his personality, he finds hardcore metal music soothing
•he once tried to eat Batman's ears, in his defence they looked edible to him,
•Diana loves to fill in kal with false information about the human race, kal is not stupid enough to belive them but follows them anyways just because he thinks it would be funny
•Bruce has a very subtle crush on him and kal notices this immediately, he's confused as to why Bruce pretends to hate him
•The whole league [escpically bruce] is overprotective of him, lex Luthor doesn't stand a fucking chance
•Kal el has no filter and will call you out with a bright innocent smile and float away moving on with his day
•Kal lives in the watchtower only visiting earth for league business, he rarely works alone
•he floats near the Zeta tubes almost everyday hoping to see bruce and when he's not there he's disappointed
• he refuses to walk, he thinks he's done enough walking for a life time and bruce has to tug on kal's cape to make sure he isn't floating above his seat
•he is way more capable of communicating his emotions in kryptonian then in English, he will switch to kryptonian when he's ranting or angry
•Diana and Barry are the ones who suggest he make a civilian identity, and thus is born reporter clark kent.
•He still visits the Kents here and then bringing them souvenirs from space
•Does not understand when someone is flirting with him but will bring bruce random animals he finds in the wild as gifts because "I heard from Jason you like adopting tiny lonely beings"
•he's still pretty good at hiding his identity somehow and at this point as learned all social cues and slang thanks to lois
•yet he still decides to fuck with the league, he gives batman forehead kisses, he once called green lantern a thot ["does that not mean thoughtful?"] And will very knowingly insult anyone who even looks at his loved ones the wrong way
•while bruce is more open of his protectiveness [and possessiveness] of clark, Clark himself is more subtle and quiet about it, but not forgetting he's still technically a spoiled prince of Krypton cannot share. He snatches bruce and gets pouty whenever bruce is talking or flirting with anybody else
•it takes them five years to get together but it finally happenes and they start dating
•the kryptonians finally find clark and force him to go with them but clark now refuses even if his exile is over.
•unfortunately he really can't leave his planet behind and has to leave [he and bruce have a long sad conversation and clark breaks down]
•A month later bruce is handling another team meeting when Clark finally comes back
•he offically leaves Krypton to his older cousin Kara and moves in with bruce
•his favourite movies are the James bond movies
•The batfam all adore him
•Basically I want a Au of sweet innocent clark that's oblivious to innuendos and shit while bruce suffers in silence and the evolves into clark being a little shit who pretends he doesn't know what he's doing when pulls bruce close and whispers in his ear about smth knowing damm well he's doing things to Bruce.
Also-
Diana: Batman if your done fighting with your boyfriend, we need to leave
Batman: wha- kal is NOT my boyfriend!
Kal: (has only be in earth for a year) I'm not?
Batman: I-
Kal: Am I not your friend?
Batman: no kal I never said-
Kal: am I not a boy?
*jla snickering in the back*

Can I get a letter from 40s Bucky? Like an enemies to lovers one. Where he lists all the things that annoys him about her and then confesses that he actually loves them and her? A little angst to sweet sweet fluff?
Tumblr media
Love>Hate
Hope this is what you had in mind!
40's Bucky X Female Reader
600+ words
No warnings except for lovesick Buck
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Little troublemaker,
      You asked me why I hate you so I’m gonna tell ya. I’m gonna try to keep my cool and not curse, but dammit doll, no one makes my blood boil like you do. And before you go and call me chicken for not confronting you in person with this, I’m only writin’ you ‘cause I don’t want to catch heck from Steve.
Okay, here goes, right outta the gate, when we first met, at the age of 8. When Steve introduced you. “Bucky?! What kinda name’s that? Sounds like your ma & pa named you after a dog.” You then started giggling, Stevie joining in with ya. “It’s a nickname, short for Buchanan, my middle name.” I told you, a smirk on my face. And you just smiled at me.
 Even then, so young, but such a know-it-all. The way you talked, like you know everything, rattling off facts left and right, Ol’ Stevie just listening to ya like you’re the smartest person alive or something. “Did you know that horses and cows can sleep standing but only dream when lying down?” you’d look so proud, waiting for me to say something. “Yeah, that’s really something sweetheart.”
 Speaking of Steve, don’t think I didn’t notice how you worked your way into his heart, by the time we were starting middle school it became Y/N & Steve this, Stevie & Y/N that. Stevie said you always asked about me, wondering why I was around much, but I think you were just looking to tease me about something.
  That summer, between middle & high school? The trip the 3 of us took to Coney Island? Not only did you chase away Betty McIntosh (she was a real cookie! 😍) but you won that stuffed bear, THEN gave it to me! Jesus, doll, I wanted to win one for you!
  I’m not even going to start in on prom. Every girl I asked, every one, said no way, that I was too hung up on you. “Y/N?! Are you nuts?” then they’d say “Yes, y/n!”  I honestly don’t know what you told them to say that. But you must’ve said something.
    And now, the way you go out with these guys, active duty men, I nicely warn you about them, ask you where they’re planning on taking ya. And you get all feisty with me “that’s none of your concern Bucky!”  Just me looking out for you, and you’ve gotta get all upset with me. Just being a gentleman and all I catch is flak.
  Doll, I’m gonna be a bit honest here, you kinda stunned me with what you said. “Bucky, why do you hate me?” a look on your face like I ain’t never seen before, something like concern, maybe heartbreak? And me, hate YOU? That is most certainly not something I could ever feel for you.
  From the first time I saw you, when Stevie said “ this is y/n y/l/n, she’s new in town.” I knew. I was hooked. Doll, you are everything to me and more. But how could I ever tell you just how perfect you are? Not when I’m so… so not perfect. So I pushed you away. For your own good. Convinced myself you were better off without a mess up like myself.
  So hate is not what I feel towards, for, you. Love, adoration, deep affection, definitely. You are amazing, gorgeous, so amazingly smart, generous to a fault. How could I not adore you, doll face?
  Now before you start screaming at me, cut me some slack. I know I’m a dope, Stevie lets me know that every chance he gets. I’m crazy ‘bout you sweetheart, so maybe my brains a bit fried.
 How about you let me take you out? Little dancing, a quick bite to eat, try my damndest to make it up to ya. Because y/n, you are IT for me. The endgame. ‘Till the end of line doll.
  My love, always
Don’t mind me, just feel like sharing the Barnes family that lives in my head
James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes: The oldest sibling, hella protective of his siblings (only they are allowed to make each other miserable, anyone else will suffer). Huge nerd, loves sci-fi, good at most of telle things that he tries, he loves his family more than anything, it’s that simple
Steve(n) Grant Rogers: is one of the Barnes as far as anyone is concerned, most people actually believe that because of how much time he spends with them and how close he is with all of them. He and Bucky are the closest and know each other by heart, but he’s also really good friends with the girls and sometimes jokingly calls Winnie and George “Ma”, “mother”, “pa” and “father” usually when he’s being a kiss ass to piss of the siblings. Honestly he pretty much lives at their house at this point. He’s a Barnes sibling, not up for debate for any of them.
Mary-Anne “Annie” Charity (Sheldon-)Barnes: She’s aboit a year younger than Steve and two and a half years younger than Bucky, but honestly, she’s probably the most mature out of the bunch. She’s the mom of the friend group (yes the siblings are also pretty much a friend group, they love each other. Unrealistic from my experience but leave me alone) and she’s also the most helpful around the household. She’s the only Blonde in the biological Barnes family, which often helps Steve to blend in with them. She and Steve are besties, she had a huge crush on him when they were kids but got over it eventually, she likes to joke that Steve is her favorite brother when she’s messing with Bucky. She’s usually the one reasoning and lecturing the others but often ends up being the one to cover for them when the others are doing something stupid. Bucky used to call her “MAC” because of her initials to piss her off, and got her to tear up on her wedding day when he called her “MACS”. She got married to William Sheldon as soon as she was old enough to get married and had a son called Charles (everyone called him Charlie), Steve was his godfather.
Rebecca “Becca” Marjorie (Proctor-)Barnes: she’s three and a half years younger than Bucky and is the sibling that annoys him the most. Bucky and Becca are always finding ways to mess with each other and make the other miserable (figuratively speaking, they would never try to actually hurt each other). Annie is usually the one to split them up when they’re arguing. She looks a lot like Bucky and has a ton in common with him, and they both hate it and use it to annoy the heck out of each other. Later on she gets engaged to Arthur Proctor who asked for George, Bucky and Steve’s blessing to marry her. They got married after the war. She became an activist for civil rights and peace after the war. She and her husband Arthur died in a car crash in 1960. They were the Winter Soldier’s first mission.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Madeline Barnes: depending on my mood, she’s between 16 and 10 years younger than Bucky. Either way, she’s the baby of the family. She’s the sweetest kid alive, and looks a lot like her siblings. She was one of the many people who believed that Steve was a Barnes, and broke down crying when she accidentally discovered the truth at the age of ten, running to Steve and begging him not to leave her even though he never had any intentions to do so. She’s a very smart kid who hangs on her older siblings’ every word. She trusts them never to lie to her, even when the truth is ugly, they do their best to explain things to her in a way she can understand (and not get traumatized by in the case of the war).
George Barnes: is their father, he lost his middle and ring finger of his right hand during the Great War, and the idea of war terrifies him though the first years of Bucky’s life were hard on him, he usually managed to ground himself with the presence of his children. His family is Jewish, and his uncle Randolph is a total dickhead that is not allowed near his children ever since that one time.
Winnifred “Winnie” Barnes: she’s the mother, she and George love Steve like one of their own, she’s an amazing cook and loves when Steve and Sarah stay over for meals, she’s very generous and especially during the depression when everyone was in need, she never hesitated to give up things to others who needed it more. She’s catholic like Steve and Sarah and raised her kids to know her religion, though they picked more up from their father
Sarah Rogers: is Steve’s mom, she doesn’t get to spend as much time with the children due to her need to work for a living, she loves how close Steve got to that amazing family and is always reassured that he has someone behind his back when he does something stupid and has another family to rely on when she’s at work. She and Winnie pretty much share custody of the kids, they love seeing her whenever she has the time
Anyway, just some personal headcanons that no one asked for!
Hank & Gracie
Another holiday, another @inklings-challenge. I missed the deadline for the Christmas challenge, but I can revisit that next year. This is my entry for the 2024 Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge. This is a retelling of Hansel & Gretel. As always, I do appreciate criticism and suggestions. Enjoy!
I’m Hank. I live with Ma and my li’l sister Gracie. We live in an apartment in the middle of the city. Sometimes there’s a dog or a cat, but it’s mostly just us. Pa used to live here, but Ma said he ran off after some hussy. I don’t know what a hussy is, but I don’t like ‘em. I don’t like Pa, either. I miss him.
The apartment is on the second floor of a tall brick building. I think I counted thirteen floors on the building. I’d look in the elevator, but Ma won’t let us go on it.
“That’s for folks who need it,” she said. “Don’t you let me catch you playing on it.”
I tried climbing the stairs to the top instead. They went on forever! But me and Gracie, we made it. The door said 14 at the top. The door below said 12. We looked all over for 13. Spent all day, but somehow it was missing. Gracie cried. She does that a lot. Ma found us while we was still looking. We got in big trouble.
“Henry James, you know better than to fool around and get lost while looking after your sister! What are you gonna do when you get lost for good? Huh? Now dinner’s cold!”
Ma sure yells a lot. She says I’m the man of the house. I have to be big and look after Gracie. I’m seven, and she’s only four. I say it ain’t fair, but Ma says it ain’t fair she have to work, but she does it anyway. It’s hard to get past Ma. She knows everything. I wanna be like her when I grow up.
Ma works hard. Sometimes she’s home, cleaning up the apartment and cooking supper, but most times she’s gone. During the day, it’s some office. At night, she’s waitin’ at some tables. That seems easy enough, but when I asked if I could wait at the tables, Ma just laughed.
“Thank you, child, but you ain’t old enough yet.”
“But you could stay home and be with Gracie, Ma.”
Ma just looked tired, shook her head, and drank her coffee. She drank a lot of coffee.
“Someday, maybe. Just not today.”
As much as Ma worked, she didn’t have a lot of money. Bills and rent, she said. She’d always talk about the bills and rent when we got holes in our clothes or made a mess or asked for a piece of candy. Bills and rent. They just keep going up and up. Sometimes it gets hard. Sometimes Ma can’t get nothing but the roaches in the cabinets. We’d go to churches more, then. Sometimes they have free food. Ma would cry every time she got a bag of somethin’. She’d cry more at home, when we was supposed to be asleep. You’d think she’d be happy. Ma does strange things sometimes.
The other day, Ma was at the office. She told us to behave and be good. It was payday, so maybe she would bring us home something nice. We didn’t have no food for a couple of days. I was hoping for some chips from that new shop that opened down the street. Some big white guy named Pete opened it and named it after himself. He was a little fat and covered in hair. He sure liked to laugh a lot, especially at Ma’s jokes. Ma said he was trying too hard. His store sure was nice, though. All sorts of candy and chips and soda, more than I’d ever seen in my life. Not even the grocery store has that many. Pete certainly didn’t have a bin of celery. Yuck.
Sometimes, when Ma wasn’t looking, Pete would slip me and Gracie a piece of candy.
“On the house,” he whispered with a wink. “Our little secret.”
We’d pocket that candy and hide it when we got home. When Ma was asleep or away, we’d eat it. It was real good. The candy smelled nice, too. We’d save the wrappers and smell them, especially when we was hungry. We’d dream of something nice to eat when Ma got paid. It’d help us hold on for just a little longer. We’d stash those wrappers under our mattresses. Ma would have a fit if she saw them. She might wonder if we stole them from Pete.
Since Ma was getting paid today, maybe she was gonna get that special something from Pete’s. But that was a whole day away, and we was hungry, and it was hot out, and we didn’t want to do nothing. But we was hungry. It was gonna be a long day. Then Gracie came up with a great idea.
“Hank, you go hide!” she said. She went to a corner and started counting. So, I went and hid behind the couch in the living room. It felt cooler back there.
“Ready or not, here I come!” she yelled.
I heard her go through the kitchen and her room and my room. I tried to hold my breath, which was hard to do because I was trying not to laugh. Then my belly growled really loud.
“Found you!” Gracie said. She crawled behind the couch and tagged me.
“No fair!” I said. “You heard my belly!”
“Still found you. Now you go, and I’ll hide.”
“Okay, okay.”
I crawled out from behind the couch and went to the corner.
“Ooooone…twoooooo…” I started. I have to count real slow for Gracie. She gets mad if I go too fast. It doesn’t help her much. She giggles and laughs while she’s looking for a place to hide. I know where she is, but if I go too fast, she’ll get mad. She gets mad if I take too long, too. I play at looking around in other rooms first before I find her, and then she laughs and calls me dum-dum for taking so long, but she isn’t mad. Gracie is as strange as Ma sometimes. Can’t please nobody.
This time, Gracie hid under the kitchen sink. I stomped down the hallway to Ma’s room.
“Where’s Gracie? Is she in Ma’s room?” I open the door to Ma’s room real slow so that it creaks real loud.
“No, not here,” I said, quickly closing Ma’s room. Ma doesn’t want us to go in. She has a way of knowing even if she ain’t there. I stomp to my room.
“Is Grac–”
She screamed and fell out onto the kitchen floor. I ran to see what was happening.
“What is it? What is it?” I said.
“It’s on me! Get it off! Get it off!”
I saw a roach crawl across her shirt. I didn’t think too much about it. I got up and swat the thing. It smacked against the wall and fell on its back. I got up to it and stomped on it, and again, and again, and again. I’m sure it was dead, but I gave it a couple more just to be sure. I swept it into the dustbin and closed the door under the sink.
Gracie cried and cried. I looked around her and pat her clothes in case there was another one that was hiding. I sat by her and held her.
“It’s gone, Gracie. I got it.”
“Did you kill it?”
“Yeah, I killed it.”
“It tried to eat me, Hank!”
“It’s gone, Gracie.”
Our bellies growled. It was gonna be a long day.
After a while, Gracie calmed down.
“I’m hungry, Hank.”
“Me, too.”
“Can we go to Pete’s?”
“We ain’t got money.”
“Aww…”
We sat for a minute.
“Do you want to go hide again? Somewhere without bugs?”
“Okay…”
“I’ll count to a hundred so you can make sure it’s real safe. If it ain’t, you yell, and I’ll take of it. Okay?”
“Promise?”
“Yeah.”
She got up, and then she got this grin on her face.
“Okay, you count to a hundred!”
So, I did. I went to my room and counted loudly to a hundred. It takes a long time to count to a hundred. I figured Gracie might have gotten bored, because she stopped giggling after a while. I heard doors open and close, but there was no screaming. Ain’t no bugs gonna get her this time.
“Niiiiinety-eeeeeight…niiiiinety-niiiiiine…oooooone huuuuuundred! Ready or not, here I come!” I called out. She opened and closed a lot of doors. She must have hid in a closet. She wasn’t giggling like she usually does. Maybe she fell asleep waiting, or got mad waiting for me. I don’t know, but I put on my act just in case. I stomped out into the hallway…
…and the front door was wide open.
I ran and looked out the open door into that hallway. Nothing but a bunch of doors to other apartments. I closed the door and went to the living room closet. She wasn’t there. Kitchen closet. Nope. Under the sink. Nope. My closet, her closet, Ma’s closet, under Ma’s bed, all nothing. I got real scared. Ma’s gonna really let me have it if I can’t find Gracie. My bottom can already feel the paddle.
I ran out into the hallway.
“Gracie! Gracie!” I called out. One of the neighbors told me to shut up. I ran down the stairs.
“Gracie!” I called out again. The old landlady was standing in her doorway, eating some kind of pudding.
“She went out a little bit ago, hon,” she said, pointing to the outside door. “Ain’t your momma home?”
“No, ma’am,” I said. “Ma’s in the office.”
“Mm-hm,” she said, going back into her apartment.
I ran outside.
“Gracie! Gracie!”
I looked left, and then right. The street was empty. There wasn’t anyone walking out. It was too hot. There was a parking lot next to our building, so I looked there first. Not a lot of cars. Everybody’s out to work or something, so there weren’t a lot of hiding spots. I looked, but she wasn’t in any of them.
“Hey!”
The landlady called me to the outside door.
“Your momma’s on her way. You better go find your sister,” she said.
“Where did she go?”
“Don’t know, hon, but you better be lookin’,” she said.
“Oh, no…” I said. So, I ran. I ran down to the corner, watched for cars, crossed the street, and kept running. I slowed down by another parking lot. Ma told me I better watch for cars or I’d get knocked into next week. I saw that happen to somebody. I waited to see them next week and the week after, but they never showed up. I don’t want to end up like that.
Then I saw it. A candy wrapper. It looked like one of the ones Pete would slip us. I smelled it, and it smelled kinda good still. It felt a little wet. I think somebody licked it. And then I saw another down the sidewalk. And another. And another. It was a trail of candy wrappers. Looked like there was some in the street, too. They was leading somewhere. And so I started running again, following the trail. I picked up each wrapper along the way. This went for a couple of blocks, and then it ended, right in front of Pete’s.
There are a lot of tall buildings around with lots of apartments, but Pete’s was a house with a garage. He turned the garage into his little store. Lots of people normally come by to buy something from him, but it’s too hot today. Ain’t nobody around. Pete was sitting at his counter with a fan blowing in hairy face.
“Oh, it’s Hank!”
“Hi, Mr. Pete,” I said, trying to catch my breath. I bent over and coughed. Pete pointed his fan at me. It felt good after running in that heat. His store was full today. There were shelves of chips and sweets and drinks and other stuff. My belly growled hard. Pete put a trash can in front of me, so I threw the candy wrappers away.
“Looking for a snack?” he asked, laughing.
“No, sir,” I said, still breathing hard. “No, sir. Gracie. Did Gracie come by here?”
“Oh, your sister? She’s fine! She’s inside having a snack!” He laughed some more. “Why don’t you pick yourself something out? Get a drink, too. I’ll put it on your mom’s tab.” He winked at me.
“Ma’s coming home. I need to get Gracie,” I said.
“Now, now, don’t you worry. Hey, take a look at this!” He got up from behind his counter. He grabbed my shoulder with one of his massive hands, and then he pulled me over to a box with little bags. The box looked new. The bags said “fried pie” on them. I could smell them.
“Just got these in today. They make the dough and pie filling at the factory, put ‘em in a fryer until they’re nice and crispy, and then coat them in a sugary glaze. They’re something else, and I got a nice, cold Coke to go with it. You’ll have that down in no time.”
I shook my head yes. That sounded amazing. I really wanted that.
“Now, don’t you worry about your momma. I’ll be watching over you two and explain everything to her when she comes by,” he said, laughing.
“Yes, sir. Thank you, Mr. Pete.”
“Don’t you worry about it, Hank. Here,” he said, handing me a fried pie. He led me to the fridge and handed me a cold Coke. He then pointed to the door to his house.
“Go on in,” he said. I was so hungry, I couldn’t wait. I went to the door and opened it carefully so I didn’t drop the Coke or the pie. I stepped in, and then there was this big pain in the back of my head.
-----
I woke up. I didn’t know how long I was asleep, but it was much later. Probably sunset. I was on Pete’s kitchen floor. I don’t remember falling down or going to sleep, only that I had a Coke and a fried pie. I looked for those, but they weren’t there. The back of my head hurt real bad. I felt around. It was kind of sticky. I don’t think it was that pie, though. It didn’t smell like it. I think it was my blood.
Past a door was the living room. It was hard to see in the setting sunlight, but I could make out Pete. He was crouched in front of a fireplace. There was a fire lit. He looked like he was sweating from all the heat.
“You keep behaving, and I won’t have to hit you again,” he said. “You’re gonna fetch a good price.”
He laughed, but this laugh made me shiver. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at someone else, someone who was next to him. There was a moan, like someone who wanted to cry. He was fiddling with something, and then he had a shirt in his hands. It was Gracie’s! He threw it into the fire!
“What did you do to my sister?” I yelled. He jumped to his feet like he was ready for a fight.
“I think you need another nap,” he said, getting a bat. It looked like a bat, but a little smaller.
I got up and ran into the living room. He brought that bat down on me, but he missed. I got something from a bin next to the fire, a little shovel. He swung his bat again. He hit my back. It hurt. It hurt a lot. It was hard to breathe. He swung again. I made myself move out of the way. I grabbed that little shovel with both my hands and swung it hard, not thinking too hard where it might land. It struck him right under his belt just as he tried to swing at me again. He cried out, and then he tripped and landed head first into his fire.
I never heard a person scream so loud in my life. His arms flailed, flinging burning wood into his living room. The room started to smoke up. Some of the paper lying around caught fire, and the curtains, and the couch. Lying in the middle of the floor was Gracie, without her shirt. It looked like someone punched her a bunch of times. Her eyes were black, blacker than our skin. There were bruises and rashes all over.
“Gracie! Come on!” I said.
“I can’t. It hurts,” she said. I picked her up the best I could and got out to the garage, and then through the shelves of Pete’s food. And then we made it outside.
“Henry James!” Ma yelled. “What–Gracie Joy! Who did this? What happened?”
“It was Pete, Ma! Pete tried–”
“You’re dead meat, kids!” Pete yelled. Black smoke came out of his house as he stumbled out. His hairy face was now red and burnt, and some of his body, too.
“What happened to you, Pete?” Ma said.
“These little shoplifters–”
“Shoplifting?” she said, looking at Pete like he was crazy.
“He burned Gracie’s shirt in the fireplace! He beat her up!”
“What?” she said, glaring at him with the full wrath of God.
There was a gunshot. A policeman stood in the street, and the pistol he shot up was now pointed at us.
“Nobody move,” he said. Another cop was in their car on the radio. There were sirens approaching.
-----
It was after dark when we got home. Ma held Gracie in her arms as she led us in, turned on the lights, and closed the door.
“Go fill the bath, Hank,” she said.
I looked down. I knew what was coming and I just couldn’t wait for it anymore.
“What’s the matter, son?” she said.
“Aren’t you going to paddle me?” I said.
“Why would I do that?” she said.
“‘Cause I lost Gracie, and then all this happened, and Mr. Pete…”
Ma laid Gracie down on the couch, and then she knelt down and held me. I cried.
“This all started because Gracie snuck out,” she said.
“But…I could have paid more attention,” I said.
“We could all do better. Be thankful that you both made it out okay,” she said. She didn’t say anything for a minute, and then she let me go, held my face, and wiped my tears with her thumb.
“Ain’t enough paddles in the world to replace what happened today. Mr. Pete was an evil man who did evil things. You don’t understand the half of what just happened, but you will, and there won’t be enough paddles in the world to replace that.”
“Ma, Gracie’s all beat up,” I said.
“And you rescued her. You took responsibility. You looked for her, found her, and even after Mr. Pete fooled you, you wisened up and fought him for your sister. You know where you screwed up, and you took responsibility. Son, you don’t need the paddle.”
“I’m sorry, Ma.”
“I’m sorry, too, son. If things were better, I could be at home, and none of this would happen. It ain’t fair, but it’s what we got. You might not feel it right now, but you did good. Now go fill the bath. We need to clean Gracie up.”
“I’m hungry,” I said.
“When we all get cleaned up, we will go to the diner,” she said.
“Really? Yeah!”
Maybe I was too happy about it, but Ma didn’t shush me like she usually did. She said I already grew up a little too much. My bath felt good, like a bath never did before. The burger and shake was real good. I slept hard that night.
I miss Pa. I wish he’d kick Mr. Pete.
But he ain’t here.
Meeting the Parents
Alex Cloudmill/Maya Dew
Ao3 Link <- Consider leaving comments/kudos here!
Butterflies brawled in Alex’s stomach, and she wiped her hands on her pants again. For like the fifth time in the past ten minutes.
No, it wasn’t Garnok rising or Sabine or Katja or—
“They’re going to love you, Alex.” Maya smiled and interlocked her fingers with Alex. “You have nothing to worry about.”
Alex shifted in the dining booth and nodded with false bravado. “I’m not nervous.”
“You don’t have to lie,” Maya said. “It’s okay to be nervous.”
Their booth in the Coffe Pot Café overlooked the Dundull bay and in the early morning, Alex could watch the fishermen set up their sails for the day.
“Okay,” Alex said. She smiled at Maya. Her warmth was so infectious, and Alex never wanted to be without it. “I’m nervous. But not as nervous as I was a few minutes ago.”
“Good,” Maya said. “Now, imagine how I felt when I had to meet the Mayor of one of the biggest and busiest cities in Jorvik because he was my girlfriend’s brother!”
It still made Alex giddy when she heard Maya call her her girlfriend. It was a novelty, okay? And even if it became habitual, Alex didn’t think her happiness at that name would fade, anyway.
“Technically, Mayor Peanut is Fort Pinta’s mayor. You just met his assistant.” Alex brought their entwined hands up and kissed Maya’s. “Besides, James is all bark and no bite.”
“To you! He immediately started quizzing me on every detail of my stay in Fort Pinta until he found another opportunity to make money.”
“He is nothing if not dedicated.”
“I think that runs in the family.”
Alex laughed.
“Maya!”
Alex straightened. Maya’s parents had arrived. They shared Maya’s green eyes, but not her red hair. As they exchanged hugs and hellos, Alex stood to the side glancing anywhere but at the family. She wasn’t used to such overt familial affection, and the brawling butterflies in her stomach had graduated to a full on fight ring.
“Ma, Pa.” Maya took Alex’s hand and smiled at her. “This is Alex.”
Alex inclined her head with an awkward smile. “Nice to meet you both.”
“Us too!” Mrs. Dew beamed.
They all sat down in the booth and continued their conversation.
“Your mother was so excited, I don’t think she spoke a single word about anything else the whole bus ride,” Mr. Dew complained.
“Well, Maya had told me so much about you, Alex, that it was hard to wait!” Her mother began to scan the menu. “Though, you must forgive me, but it’s slipped my mind what you do for a living.”
“Oh, well, I’m in druidic training at the moment,” Alex replied. She was sure it was not what her girlfriend’s parents wanted to hear—that she was joining a secretive religious sect, but there wasn’t much truth Alex was able to tell Maya’s parents. So, she was trying not to lie when she could. If everyone knew about the true danger and magic of the world…maybe it would be better. But, alas, Fripp would have her head. Not that he doesn’t already have a million reasons to be mad at her, anyway. “But, I help my brother out at Fort Pinta sometimes, too.”
“Druidic training?” Mr. Dew asked. “That’s…”
“Remember our blacksmith back in the day, honey? He was a druid.” Mrs. Dew pointed out.
“Alex is great at it, too, guys,” Maya said. “She’s even on this task force that helps out across Jorvik.”
“Oh! Didn’t you say you had picnics with…oh, what was their name? One of Alex’s colleagues.” Mrs. Dew said.
“Yeah, we have picnics with one of my, um, co-workers in the Forgotten Fields,” Alex said.
“That’s so darling,” Mrs. Dew said. “Do you like it in Jarlaheim?”
“Oh, Jarlaheim’s a beautiful city, but I don’t actually live there,” Alex said.
“Oh, I must have heard Maya wrong, then,” Mrs. Dew said. “Where do you live?”
“I have a house in Valedale, but I do often stay with Maya in the Harvest Counties. It’s easier that way.” Alex fiddled with the napkin in her lap. “Plus, I have a good friend in Jarlaheim that will let me crash if need be.”
“Oh good, good,” Mrs. Dew said.
The waitress came to take their drink orders and then was off.
“This Dundull weather is beautiful, isn’t it, Ma?”
“Oh, yes. I love the sea breeze,” Mrs. Dew said. She folded her napkin in her lap. “Alex, do you like Fort Pinta, Jarlaheim, or Valedale best?”
“There’s great things about all of Jorvik, of course. But, I do really like living in Jarlaheim. It reminds me of home. The music scene is really great.”
“What kind of music are you into?”
“Hip-hop. Some rock. What about you?”
“Ooh, I like Jazz,” Mrs. Dew said. “The blues.”
“She plays it non-stop,” Mr. Dew added. “Where did you say your hometown was?”
“Jorvik City.”
“We live there now! Which part?” Mrs. Dew asked.
“Governor’s Fall. I really did love it, but at some point, my family just couldn’t afford to live there anymore,” Alex said. It was bittersweet but Alex was glad for the memories she made there.
“You both will have to visit us next time in Jorvik City,” Mrs. Dew said.
“Ma, I don’t like the city. I can’t bring Elli with me.” Maya pouted. It was funny. Maya was completely at ease, as she should be with her parents, but Alex felt like she was currently acting the most professional and polite she ever has.
“I’m sure your horse will be okay for a few days alone.”
“No, she won’t.”
The conversation devolved into a light-hearted argument about Elli being able to handle some alone time that was interrupted by their waiter taking their drink orders. The dinner continued in a similar banter, and the tension that Alex had held slowly dissipated.
By the time they were exchanging goodbyes, Alex really felt close to them.
Once they were gone, Alex and Maya started walking to the Dundull stable.
“They really like you a lot, you know,” Maya said. She squeezed Alex’s hand.
Alex knew she had issues with parental figures. It was an obvious consequence of her childhood that manifested in both avoidance and over-attachment to her older mentors. Especially with Elizabeth gone, Alex felt like she had to re-confront all her mental struggles all over again.
She was glad to have Maya by her side, and a small part of her hoped that one day, just maybe, she could call Maya’s parents her own.
Tumblr media
The smile never left my face I sat in my corner in the tailor shop, picking up where I left off this morning with Polly’s dress. I know she didn’t need it right away, but I wanted to finish it, mostly so Polly could wear it and show off my work, drumming up more business for myself.
I was tired riding my parent's coattails; I needed my own clients. Upon returning to the store my parents were working on what appeared to be more suits for the Peaky Blinders. The man requesting new suits ever couple of months. My mother had asked about my whereabouts this afternoon, the note Polly leaving clearly vague. I explained to them that I spent the last two hours with Mrs Gray and immediately the questions stopped.
My brother, James had come home early from work at the factory and after he cleaned himself up at home, he joined me in the shop as I worked on the black cotton dress. This was our normal routine most days, he would busy himself catching up with me before leaving for the evening only returning in the early hours of the morning.
“So come on, what’s that smile for?” James asked reclining himself as best he could on the uncomfortable wooden chair. He crossed his feet at his ankles, his legs stretched out across my workspace.
Glancing up from my work I shook my head feigning cluelessness as best I could, but the smile never left my face, making him to laugh. “Seriously? You literally can’t stop smiling. It’s a guy, isn’t it? My sister has finally stepped out of her comfort zone and got herself a man. I heard you went to the Garrison today, is that where you met him?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about and how did you know I was at the Garrison?” I questioned turning my head to look at him, only to find him staring at me joyfully. He had been wanting me to branch out for months.
“Few guys from work were there for a midday pick me up. They saw you there with the scary witch” He shrugged referring to Mrs Gray.
“She is not a scary witch James. She is truly nice once you break through the cold exterior.” I tell him with a playful eyeroll. “However, if you want to discuss relationships let’s talk about who are you sneaking off to see until all hours?” I asked, placing my hands on my lap ceasing my stitches as I raised a curious eyebrow at him.
“You noticed that huh?” He asked chewing on his bottom lip trying his best to fight off his grin.
“It wasn’t hard, plus the smell of perfume on your shirts was a giveaway” I giggled lifting the fabric to continue placing a few stitches. Hearing him sigh happily, I glanced to him through the side of my eye.
It was nice to see my brother smiling for a genuine reason, that reason not being over money. His gambling habits seemed to stop now all his time was taken up by this new woman in his life, if only she had arrived earlier, it would have saved our family a lot of strife, but it also would have meant I would have never personally met Thomas Shelby, the very reason for my own smile.
“You caught me. She lives over in Artillery Street, near nan. Her name is Martha, Martha Worthington. She teaches down at the school. I’ve been seeing her for the last five weeks.” James grinned, looking down at his feet, his cheeks turning red as he spoke. “Don’t you be saying anything to ma and pa though. I don’t want them to know, not yet.”
“Your secret is safe with me." I tell him softly with a nod. After the incident a few months ago with Arthur Shelby my parents were unforgivably hard on James. They never let him forget that they were forever in debt to the Shelby’s because of him. Even after my brother paid back what he owed my parents in full, with some extra, they didn’t let up. Instead demanding to know where he got the money before handing it back to him insisting, they didn’t want his dirty money.
“What about you? I don’t think I have ever seen you smile like this. What’s going on? Is it a guy” He asked but before I could answer, the door to the tailor shop opened the cold air swooping into the shop taking whatever heat the room held with it.
The entire place fell quiet as Thomas Shelby walked into the establishment taking in his surrounding before removing his peaked cap, rustling his hair as he placed the cap in his coat pocket. I felt my heart, beat wildly in my chest as his blue eyes found mine, the feeling of his lips ghosting over my own from earlier this afternoon. I couldn’t stop myself as I began to chew on my bottom lip, craving the feeling of his pink plump lips on mine again.
“Mr Shelby, just in time.” My father spoke breaking Thomas’s eye contact with me so he could turn to face my father who had approached the front desk upon his arrival. “Your suit is ready if you would like to follow me” Thomas simply nodded, taking one last look over his shoulder at me before following my father towards the back of the store to his workstation.
“What was all that about?” James asked looking between myself and Thomas, his eyes settling on my face as I held my head down to my chest focusing on the soft lines of the dress. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say Thomas Shelby has taken a liking to you and you him. But you wouldn’t be stupid enough to get involved with the Shelby family, right?”
“Right” I respond, maybe a little too fast. Turning my head to hide my face as he could always tell when I was lying, I made myself appear busy by looking through the wicker basket next to me for a piece of random fabric I knew I didn’t need.
“Always a pleasure Mr Shelby” My father spoke once more breaking the deathly silence that had fallen over that shop as he walked towards the exit, Thomas just behind his new suit over his arm ready for him to take home.
“Your window, who’s repairing it?” He asked looking past my mother, towards the wooden panel that covered window at the back of the room. Everyone’s attention went from Thomas to the window and back again. The Peaky Blinder waited for an answer, the power simply oozing from him as he stood there, demanding the attention of the room.
“Edward Stone sir” My father responded closing the door he had opened for Thomas thinking he would leave once he got his suit.
“Stone? You will be waiting all year for Stone.” Thomas sighed shaking his head, his hand entering his coat to fetch his cigarette case, running one of the thin sticks between his lips before settling it at the corner of his mouth. “Your daughter can come with me, I’ll fetch my men, they will have it done within the hour”
“There is no need…” My father began to speak but for the first time in her life my mother had interrupted him. The look on my father’s face was priceless, he couldn’t believe his wife had just disrespected him in front of a Shelby no less.
Looking over at my brother, his eyes were watching the scene unfold in front of him, suspicion in his mind as he looked between Thomas and myself.
“We appreciate the offer Mr Shelby. Anastasia, please go with Mr Shelby” My mother spoke, a small smile gracing her lips, but the smile did not reach her eyes. In fact, her eyes held fear as she looked at what some people would consider the devil in front of her.
“I am sure James is more than capable of showing your men to our shop Mr Shelby, surely he would be more suited” My father protested, his arm extended towards my brother whose face fell at the thought of having to spend any time with a Shelby.
“After what happened with Arthur, William I am not sure that is a good idea” My mother spoke, her voice quiet as she walked up next to my father, placing her hands on his arm. Her voice was that quiet, it was almost a whisper, afraid her words might offend the man that could have us all killed by a click of his fingers.
“Again, accept my apologises for my brother behaviour. He has no control when it comes to matters of business.” Thomas spoke up, annoyance evident in his voice as he held a match up to the cigarette in mouth, smoke filling his space instantly.
“No need to apologise Mr Shelby, we understand. Anastasia get your coat.” My mother directed, her eyes pleading to follow her order. Everyone knew it was futile to go against a Shelby, they always got what they wanted in the end. Nodding my head, I gave the dress to my brother who looked at me, slightly asking me not to go.
“I’ll be okay” I whisper to him with a nod, walking around the table and taking my coat off the rack, I put on the warm fabric, standing next to Thomas, just waiting for his word so we could leave. Looking up at the man, my hands went calmy as he held his famous stoic face, his eyes glanced over to me.
“Expect my men in the next hour. Good evening Mr and Mrs Adler, James” Thomas spoke confidently, taking the peaked cap from his pocket and placing it on his head. After a quick nod in my direction he held the door open for me, leaving the tailor shop together.
Nothing was spoken between us as I followed behind the man in front leading me towards Watery Lane. The betting shop coming into view; however, he never went through the door. Instead, he went through another, two doors down once again holding it open for me to enter. Unsure I quietly thanked him standing in what looked to be a small hallway of a home. This was the Shelby home.
“Excuse me a moment yeah?” He spoke not waiting for an answer as he left, walking up the flight of stairs to the left of us. Standing by the door, I played with my fingers as I thought about what I would say if any of his relatives were to come through door. Especially if it were Arthur, I don’t think I could hear him call me a high-class prostitute again, the words were just too hurtful.
“Who are you?” A young boy no older than ten years of age asked coming from what I could only guess was the living room of the home. “Are you a whore?” He asked bluntly, the question had me choking on my own saliva. How does this young boy know what a whore was?
“No, no I am…well I…” I stumbled over my next words. What exactly was I? I wouldn’t say I was friends with the Shelby’s, and I am certainly not attached to any of them in a romantic sense. Would a ten-year-old boy know what an acquaintance was?
“Finn, what are you doing here? Didn’t Polly send you round to Mary’s for a study lesson eh?” Thomas’s voice rescued me from answering the question. He was marching down the stairs, his long black coat flying out from behind him.
“The lessons are boring Tom, can’t I stay here and play with you and her” The young boy pleaded shoving his small hands into the pockets of his shorts, twisting his body from side to side to appear more innocent.
“No Finn, off you go and don’t let Polly catch you” Thomas spoke sternly to the young boy, placing a hand on his shoulder and shoving him towards the front door next to me.
"Who is she? Is she your girlfriends?" The young boy asked, looking past Thomas to me, a cheeky smile growing on his face.
"No Finn, now go" Thomas insisted, pointing a finger at him. Finn clearly wasn’t happy, muttering under his breathe he opened the door and disappeared into the busy street.
“He is cute.”
“It runs in the family” Thomas smirked keeping the door open, nodding his head towards the street for me to leave. Stepping forward I looked over my shoulder at him, my eyebrow raised at him silently hoping he would continue. “He's me younger brother, the youngest Blinder.”
“Surely, he isn’t involved in your business Thomas. He is much too young” I spoke sternly forgetting who I was speaking to for a moment.
I watched as Thomas' eyebrow rose in question, my eyes widened when I realised what I had said and who I had said it to. He didn’t seem to mind my words though. The words had the opposite effect, reaching out he grabbed my hand pulling me back into his family home, closing the door with a bang behind me.
I felt my breathing quicken at his actions, fearing the worst I closed my eyes. No one spoke to Thomas Shelby like that and got away with it.
My eyes snapping open when I felt his soft plump lips against mine for the second time today. Smiling at the feeling, my eyes fluttered closed while my hands ran up his sculpted chest, resting on his shoulders as our lips moved as one. One of his hands was resting against my hip, the other hand hovered over the side of my face before moving to tangle itself in my hair. Feeling his tongue against my lips, I tried to pull back but with his hand in my hair it was impossible.
“Just go with it Stace.” Thomas whispered against my lips before returning back to my lips. The next time I felt his tongue press against my lips I followed his advice and went with it.
Without really knowing what I was doing I opened my mouth slightly allowing his tongue to enter, it quickly swept over my own, claiming my mouth as its own as it moved around my mouth. The feeling was new, but it felt incredible. I felt what I could only describe as an ache between my legs as my hips bucked forward, they had a mind of their own, banging against his searching for some contact.
I felt Thomas smile into the kiss before pressing his hips hard against my own forcing me into the door behind me. A foreign noise left my throat as he rested his hips against mine, pleasure washing over me.
Whimpering quietly when Thomas’s pulled away, his forehead resting on my own, his breathe mixing with my own. His hand left my hair caressing my face until I opened my eyes. My breath hitched in my throat at the closeness of him. I could count the number of freckles on his face, I could see every single emotion swirling in his blue eyes.
“We gotta get going, we don’t want your brother coming after me, eh?” Thomas spoke softly, pulling his body from my own. It was highly unlikely James would ever seek out a Shelby, even if I happened to be kidnapped by one. He would probably say, good luck Ana, see ya. He was simply that terrified of them.
When Thomas pulled away completely, I was saddened by the loss of contact, I couldn’t help but pout as he pulled on my hand moving me from the door, only to open it once more. “There will be plenty more of that, don’t worry love” Thomas winked ushering me out to the street just as his Aunt Polly walked towards the door.
“What’s been going on here then?” She smiled looking between the both of us, the same knowing look she had earlier on her face. Feeling self-conscious I looked at the ground beneath my feet instead of her hawk like gaze that felt like it was penetrating my soul and reading my mind at the same time.
“I will be back later Pol, got to speak to Curly about fixing a window” Thomas spoke completely ignoring the question his aunt had just asked.
It must have been a family thing, only answer what you wanted, ignore the rest.
“Very well. John has called a meeting at the Garrison make sure you are there. It’s important, he wants your blessing.” His aunt spoke with a sigh in her voice, her eyes shifting from Thomas over to myself. Holding my gaze with her knowing stare, I looked over at Thomas for some help, but he hadn't noticed. He was busy pulling out his silver cigarette case from his pocket. I had never seen a man who could smoke as much as the one in front of me.
“My blessing for what eh?” Thomas asked lighting yet another cigarette, his attention on the thin stick rather than his aunt.
“Guess we will find out” She nodded taking a final look at her nephew before moving between the two of us. “I’ll be seeing a lot of you it seems Anastasia” She called walking down the street disappearing in the direction of the Garrison.
Thomas being a man of very little words nodded his head forward walking in the opposite direction to his aunt, the smoke of the cigarette flowing behind him as I followed behind like a lost puppy trying hard not to step in the grimy puddles only to stop when Thomas had stopped in front of me, an amused expression on his face as he waited for me catch up to him.
“You know boots would be much more practical” He spoke once I reached him, his eyes trained on my chosen footwear. The thought had crossed my mind, but I simply didn’t want to part with my shoes. The T-bar shoes was the first pair of shoes my grandmother had brought me as a little girl, telling me that they are lady shoes. Every lady should where them and you would find yourself a good hard-working man. It was the only shoes, I ever had.
“Well Mr Shelby, I wasn’t expecting to be following you around Small Heath tonight, so you'll have to excuse me” I huffed out a little annoyed with how much dirt and grime my shoes had saw over the last few days.
“Mr Shelby again, eh?” He laughed, a magical sound coming from his throat as his fingers took the cigarette from his lips to toss it across the street into a puddle. “You’re not too attached to them, are you?” He asked pointing to my shoes, as we took off walking again only this time, he slowed his paced so I could keep up.
“Well, they are certainly my favourite pair of shoes. Why do you ask?” I questioned once he came to a stop outside what looked to be a scrap yard. Looking inside my eyes immediately widening, there was no escaping the mud in there.
“We have to go in there” Tommy smirked enjoying the predicament I faced. I had tried really hard to keep my shoes in good condition, but I knew if I stepped a foot into this dump they would be ruined.  “What wrong princess? You afraid to get a little dirty?” He chuckled teasingly as he walked into the yard leaving me alone at the gates.
Grumbling to myself I had an internal battle. I knew I wasn’t a princess, sure I liked to take care of myself but that didn’t mean I couldn’t get ‘dirty’ as Thomas had put it. I just didn’t want to ruin my favourite pair of shoes.
I didn’t understand why, but I didn’t like the idea of Thomas assuming I was some kind of presumptuous, princess. The thought that I was had gotten to me.
Surprising myself I took a step forward the mud making a disgusting, squishing sound as I took the step, closing my eyes I could feel it slipping into my shoe. Reminding myself that I was doing this to prove a point, I willed myself to move forward my other shoe suffering the same fate. I was just grateful for my skin toned stockings for creating a barrier for my skin.
“Oh, dear Miss, your feet yeah, there all mud” A man gasped running towards me with a limp, a pair of men’s boots in his hands. “Oh dear, that’s no good yeah, no good” He mumbled to himself, one of his hands clamping down on his head as he spoke, his eyes widen as he looked at my now mudded feet.
“It's quite alright, I will be fine, it can be washed off. Please don’t worry” I tell him placing a hand on his upper arm in a supportive manner. Just as I did, Thomas came around the corner another man by his side, who was slightly taller and a lot thinner.
“I was too late Tom, she moved from the gate” The first man spoke his hand still holding his head as he looked between myself and the two men that had joined us. The taller man looked confused; he was, trying to figure out what was going on whereas Thomas had probably one of the biggest smirks on his face.
“These are the men who can fix the window I presume?” I speak not wanting to bring up the mud currently drying into a hideous crusting mess against my feet.
Instead, I chose to ignore it.
“Indeed, Anastasia meet Curly and my uncle Charlie” Thomas introduced the heavy-set man, holding the shoes first. I reached out hand for him to shake which he quickly accepted, whereas the other taller, leaner man who Thomas referred to as Uncle simply nodded in my direction.
“Nice to meet you both. I hope this isn’t too much of an inconvenience, but Thomas insisted”
“Indeed, I did” He nodded patting the taller man on the shoulder. “I will leave you in their capable hands yeah?” He asked waiting on my answer before saying his goodbyes leaving me alone with his two men.
Damian était assis seul au fond de la salle et remuait nerveusement sa jambe de plus en plus. Il en avait assez. Il voulait partir et broyer du noir. Mais Anya avait insisté pour qu'il soit là et il n'avait pas pu refuser. Ils venaient d'obtenir leur diplôme. Après toutes ces années à l'académie Eden, ils étaient enfin diplômés et Becky voulait fêter cela en organisant une fête. Toute leur classe était présente. En particulier James, pensa Damian en fronçant les sourcils.
Ce garçon l’énervait au plus haut point. En particulier lorsqu’il se montrait trop proche d’Anya. Lors de leurs premières années à l’académie, Damian n’avait jamais vraiment fait attention à lui. Ils étaient dans la même classe, mais ils ne s’étaient jamais véritablement parlés.
Un jour, alors qu’ils avaient douze ans, James et Anya s’étaient retrouvés en binôme pour un exposé. Cela les avaient rapproché. Ils parlaient, ils riaient, ils passaient leur temps libre ensemble. Bien sûr, Becky était toujours avec eux, mais Damian était bien trop jaloux pour la remarquer. Même à ce moment précis, ils étaient ensemble, entrain de rire. Ewen et Emile se mirent devant lui, lui bloquant la vue d’Anya et de James.
« Damian, pourquoi tu restes tout seul ? Demanda Ewen.
-On est diplômé ! Viens t’amuser ! Continua Emile. »
Tous deux affichaient un immense sourire et ils voulaient que leur meilleur ami profite de la soirée. C’est vrai qu’il était diplômé et c’est vrai qu’il devait fêter cela. Pourtant, il avait cette boule à l’estomac qui l’empêchait de s’amuser. Mais ce n’était pas parce qu’il était de mauvaise humeur qu’il devait gâcher la fête de ses amis. Il se leva soudainement.
« Je vais y aller, dit-il. »
Il se dirigea vers la sortie, ignorant ses deux amis qui lui demandaient de rester. Il sortit et l’air frais le saisit. Il pouvait sentir la différence de température comparée à la chaleur qui régnait à l’intérieur. Peut-être qu’un peu d’air frais l’aiderait à calmer ses nerfs.
« Damian ! »
Il sentit son cœur s’accélérer. Anya ? Qu’est-ce qu’elle faisait là ?
« Est-ce que tout va bien ? Demanda-t-elle. Tu es parti tellement vite.
-Ça va, répondit-il en feignant l’indifférence. »
De toute façon, pensa-t-il, comment pouvait-elle savoir s’il allait bien où pas, puisqu’elle passait tout son temps collée à James. Anya écarquilla les yeux comme si elle était surprise. Est-ce qu’il lui avait répondu trop brusquement sans s’en rendre compte ? Il voulut s’excuser, mais Anya le coupa.
« Pourquoi est-ce que tu n’aimes pas James ? »
Pendant une seconde, Damian ne sut quoi répondre. Il s’attendait à tout, sauf à ça.
« Qu’est-ce qui te fait dire ça ? Réussit-il à demander.
-Tu n’es pas très gentil avec lui. Même si tu n’es pas toujours très gentil avec tout le monde. »
Damian grimaça en repesant à la manière dont il avait traité Anya quand ils étaient enfants. Mais elle ne lui en avait jamais voulu et était devenue son amie.
« Avec James, c’est différent, continua Anya. Je vois bien que tu ne l’aimes pas. Si tu apprenais à le connaître... »
Damian leva les yeux au ciel. Elle voulait qu’il devienne ami avec James, mais c’était quelque chose qu’il refusait.
« Tu verras qu’il est très gentil.
-Laisse tomber Anya.
-Je suis sûre que vous pourriez devenir ami.
-Je t’ai dit de laisser tomber ! »
Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle insistait comme cela ? Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle ne comprenait pas qu’il ne voulait pas devenir ami avec James ? Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle ne voulait pas voir ce qu’il ressentait ? Il sentait la colère et la tristesse monter en lui. Il porta sa main à sa poitrine et serra le poing, espérant faire passer la douleur. S’il devenait ami avec James, il devrait supporter de le voir avec Anya et cela lui était impossible.
« Pourquoi est-ce que tu réagis comme ça ?
-Anya, arrête.
-Aide-moi à comprendre.
-Parce que je t’aime ! »
Le silence s’installa entre eux. Les mots de Damian résonnèrent dans leurs oreilles. Il avait l’impression que son cœur allait exploser. Il n’aurait jamais cru lui avouer qu’il l’aimait de cette façon. Anya le regardait, surprise. Elle ouvrit et ferma la bouche plusieurs fois, avant de dire :
« Attends, tu m’aimes ? »
Damian soupira et s’ébouriffa les cheveux. Cela ne servait plus à rien de le cacher.
« Je t’ai toujours aimé. »
Étrangement, il se sentait bien. Bien sûr, il avait peur de sa réaction, mais il se sentait aussi libéré de lui avoir avoué ses sentiments. Même s’il aurait voulu que les choses soient différentes et qu’il ne lui ait pas dit qu’il l’aimait à cause de sa jalousie envers James. Il observa Anya qui était perdue dans ses pensées. Il l’entendit marmonner :
« Je comprends mieux ce qu’il y avait dans tes pensées.
-Quoi ? »
Anya revint à la réalité et écarquilla les yeux, comme si elle avait été prise la main dans le sac. Ce n’était pas la première fois qu’elle agissait ainsi, pensa Damian.
« Rien, répondit-elle.
-Tu n’es pas obligé de me répondre quoi que se soit.
-Pourquoi est-ce que tu ne me l’as jamais dit ?
-La peur d’être rejeté, de te perdre et que les choses soient différentes entre nous.
-C’est pour ça que tu étais jaloux de James ? »
Il fallait encore qu’elle parle de lui. Comme si elle savait à quoi il pensait, elle lui prit la main pour le rassurer.
« Tu n’as pas à être jaloux de lui. C’est mon ami, comme Becky. Et même si tu es aussi mon ami, ce que je ressens pour toi est différent de ce que je ressens pour Becky ou James. »
Elle rougit et sa main trembla légèrement. C’était la première fois que Damian la voyait ainsi. Il se demanda si elle aussi ressentait la même chose que lui. Il sentit l’espoir monter en lui. Il lui serra la main, espérant lui transmettre ce qu’il pouvait ressentir. Sans à ce qu’il ne s’y attende, Anya se mit sur la pointe des pieds et posa ses lèvres sur les siennes. Cela n’avait duré qu’une seconde, mais pour Damian, cela avait été la plus belle seconde. Anya s’écarta légèrement.
« Je t’aime aussi. »
Elle l’embrassa à nouveau et Damian répondit à son baiser. Il passa timidement ses bras autour d’elle et la serra contre lui. Plus rien ne comptait à part Anya. Il l’aimait et elle venait de lui avouer qu’elle l’aimait aussi et c’était tout ce qui importait.
