I'm new to Codywan. Doyou have a list of Must Reads or Fandom Classics or anything like that? (Bonus points for longfic!)

Funnily enough, I'm not sure I'm an expert on Fandom Classics, but I do think that the long Clone Wars rewrites/fix-its are a perfect way to start! (And then you can move on to shorter fics and crazy AUs haha) So these are all longer, and can be fit into TCW continuity, even if they diverge at some point because the writers can't help themselves and will fix canon (as they should).

in our hearts some ancient song by whimsicalimages (@keensers)- Fives discovers the chips, he's on the run and gambles his life on the assumption that there's something going on between Cody and his general, so they would help him. Some amazing lore in this fic. 40k words

Golden Shield of Brightness by NerJetii (@nerjetii)- Soulmate AU, your soulmates' (romantic and platonic) names are written on your wrists. "Only" 15k, but I would recommend it even if you're not a fan of soulmate AUs (=they don't fall into each other's arms just because they're soulmates). Focuses on Obi-Wan, mostly, but we also learn a bit about how the Kaminoans treated the clones.

I am teaching myself how to be free by tattooedgreenhouse (@gershwyndl) - this might be THE Clone Wars rewrite for me because the author has taken upon themselves to literally retell the whole series from Cody's AND Obi-Wan's POV. It's ambitious, I'm pretty sure it's technically canon compliant, but we do get our happy ending. Appropriately, it's 113k long.

i'll orbit your flickering star by sunskippa (@sunskippa) - Also a Clone Wars rewrite (by this I mean that it goes through the events of the series from Cody's POV), also canon compliant, 78k words. Might be my favourite ending in the genre, beautiful. I don't even know how to sell this, but it's a must-read imo

|to failure sweet victor| by littlekaracan (@cillyscribbles)- 20k words. In case you've read all those rewrites and you just want to skip to the part where Cody leaves the Empire and they find each other again on Tatooine *with a twist*

you read my mind, I'll read yours series by sospes - This is very much canon divergent. Starts off as a mission fic, Cody and Obi-Wan discover an artefact that creates a Force-bond between them. Misunderstandings ensue. Look at the tags/ratings, some of the works later on are spicier/angstier. But you could also read the first one and call it a day if those aren't your jam. (The whole thing is 166k long at the moment.)

will you be an anarchist with me? by a_alene (@birdiedoessw) - an outsider POV (Rex's) on Cody's and Obi-Wan's relationship. With the extra twist that they can't stand each other at the beginning of the war. This is something I would've loved to read when I was getting into codywan, it's a great way to start. (25k words)

shoulder the sky series by Night Fury (@shootingstarpilot) - Last but not least, an ongoing series (all but two works are finished, more than 200k words atm). You'll have to "get through" the first work to read the more codywan-focused fics (and I don't mean this in a bad way because the story is a m a z i n g. Just so you know.) To be honest, I think it might be a bit confusing to read at the moment because as far as I can see a work was removed from the series, but it's still up? I'm not sure what happened there, but I suppose you could simply read all the author's works in chronological order :D This series is pretty much Obi-Wan AND clone troopers focused and relies a lot on the Jedi Apprentice series (which isn't canon anymore) but you're gonna be fine if you haven't read it.

Cody, on the other hand, hasn’t the Force whispering into his ear – so, with a voice too quiet and too dry from sleep, Obi-Wan calls out to him.

I have a question, do you have any fic recommendations where Obi Wan is an active rebel WITHOUT Jedi Order bashing? Preferably with Cody but I'm not picky....

Or even any active rebel Jedi? Not just Ahsoka or my boy Kanan?

Looks like I have a few, yeah! I tend to go more for fix-its where Order 66 just doesn't happen, but I've managed to dredge up a few where either Obi-Wan or another Jedi is an active Rebel. If you've already read all of these, then let me congratulate you on your wonderful taste. If you find something new in here, hopefully you enjoy!

|snow on red sands| series by littlekaracan: This is one of my favorite fics (it's a fic from Cody's POV and a companion fic from Obi-Wan's). Very very sweet, we don't get to see a LOT of Obi-Wan being an active Rebel even in the fic from his POV, but the theme is in there and I like it, so. There it is.

The Crime of Grief series by kj_feybarn: This is another one where it was clearly a one-shot that gained itself a midquel companion fic and I think now it's an incomplete series, but it's AWESOME. Heart-wrenching, of course, but very good. DEFINITELY Jedi friendly, just like everything I've read by this author.

grow bold in a barren and desolate land by blackkat: This one is a Mace Survives AU, and technically there's a mention that Agen Kolar survived, too, so I assume he'd also be an active Rebel.

hours and armies couldn't keep me out by blackkat: This one is set JUST post-Order 66 presumably, so counting as "active Rebel" is possibly stretching the definition just a tad, but this one is Aayla and Luminara and that's rare enough on its own to let it slide.

old words die out (new melodies break forth) by silveryink: And yet another Mace Survives AU where he's taken to Polis Massa by Bail and meets up with Obi-Wan and Yoda there. It focuses on Mace, but it does count as Obi-Wan being an active Rebel, too, even if we don't actually get to see him doing any missions himself.

Reva survive and is found by Yoda and Obi-Wan when they come to the Temple before trying to defeat Palpatine and Anakin respectively.

Then, Tatooine exile.

The strugle of two jedi in hidding, on a desert planet. One, an ex-councillor with trauma. The other, an ex-initiate with also trauma.

Obi-Wan is actually Obi-Wan instead of a cartoonish version of a grieving man, "here insert PTSD". He is Obi-Wan in all his complexities, with his qualities, his warmth, his relentless will to provide and protect the vulnerable, his natural ways ot teaching, and his flaws, his fear, his brooding, his at-times blindness, his certainity in things not really founded in anything concrete but born from negative feelings…

And Reva… Finally, Reva as an actual child instead of a cartoonish angry child, "here insert vitriols that everyone has to bend over backward to sooth regardless of if she's right or not". An actual child, with the expected sadness related to the murder of her family and destruction of everything she has ever known. But also one with dreams, questions, idle curiosity and games, thoughts and chatter, friends from the neighbourhood, childish absolute certainty but also wise reflections… Just… a child, a good one with her struggles and her own strengh.

I love how we see everything from her eyes.

The change in perspective, at times more simplistic or perceptive, is just great.

I love all the exploration of Tatooine like a kid.

I love how she try to adapt and want to be a jedi, even if a new different kind of one in this new era where they are hunted; while also taking the time to just... be a kid.

It was just… a lot. Simple, complex, aching, sweet, heavy, uplifting and just… T_T Yeah.

Perfect.

Read it.

Leia takes her first steps in the belly of a Corellian freighter they’ve stowed away on. She wobbles between Padme’s outstretched hands and Obi Wan’s knees and boxes of smuggled luxuries. When she falls down, Obi Wan surges forward, heart in his throat, but Leia laughs. -

There’s so many ways you can rate fic, bc I’ve truely read so many amazing fics this year. I’m gonna go by how much brain space these fics took up, and how many times I’ve gone back to reread them. I’m also not counting anything I’m betaing for since like it’s my job to reread and let those fics take up a lot of brain space, and also bc in my mind betaing a fic isn’t really “reading”. If I was counting them though they would make the list.

6. |a leap in faith| by littlekaracan

Star Wars, codywan. 10k.

I’m an absolute sucker for wing fics. SUCKER. And this fic just has such a lovely level of intimacy, but with just a smidge of repression & pining that makes it very compelling. It’s an incredibly comforting and comfortable read and I find myself coming back to it now and then when I want something soft. Littlekaracan is one of my fav Codywan writers and they write Cody so well I’m always very compelled by the way they represent him!

5. Stalker’s tango by crashing_meteros

Star Wars. Bobadin. 7k

I was and still am very taken by the nonlinear structure of this fic. It’s incredibly well done and remains not just coherent but very expertly builds the plot. I’m always very intrigued by Boba and Din have met before aus and this fic’s take on that idea is just so unique and compelling. I support bobadin’s rights to be total and utter shitheads.

4. The wrong stars by tciddaemina (@ticddaemina)

3. While Mighty Oaks Do Fall by witchofendor (@a-witch-in-endor)

Atla. Zukka. 155k

This fic’s premise, incredibly oversimplified, is atla but Zuko is a lawyer. And I LOVE IT. It has this incredible blend of theology, law and political manuvering. I love some good old politics but I don’t know a lot about religion and law. This fic not only made me care and be invested in fantasy theology and law, it made me care more about real life theology and law which I think is a major accomplishment. The author clearly knows their stuff and it makes the fic way more compelling. The fleshing out of institutions like the firesages and the theological practices of other nations is incredibly well executed and compelling. I deeply care about WMODF zuko and literally just every time I re-read chapter 15 I cry.

2. War Games by Lovely_Elbow_Leech (@lovelyelbowleech)

Atla. Zukka. 271k

This one wins the “OC character most likely to tempt Flynn’s aromanticism” award. Everyone and their grandmother goes on about how much they like Shen BUT OH MY GOD I LOVE SHEN. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!!!! While I love love love War Crimes (this fic’s prequel) War Games does such a stellar job balancing so many moving parts, characters and plot lines that it’s incredibly impressive. It’s handling of the aftermath of War Crimes and the kind of damage that does to Sokka and Zuko is Very Very Good and feels realistic & grounded and not torture porny. This is also maybe my fav characterisation of Suki like ever. I can’t wait to see how this fic unfolds and comes together.

The rest of the fics on this list are very close together, with little separating them between ranks. This fic is the exception. 2022 has been the year of AST for me in a lot of ways. I can’t go into all the things I love about this one or we’d be here all day. It has crept into the fibers and seams of my mundane life in a way only few things have been able to. It’s helped me keep time, to know what day it was relative to updates. It’s let me examine parts of myself I didn’t know we’re there. It’s kept me entertained, and thinking, and given me the ability to reflect and grow as a person. There’s not much you can do to top that.
