These reblogs explain their dynamic really well. But if you'd like to take a step back...

At it's core, I genuinely believe that codywan is about giving Obi-Wan a happy ending. The dude has been through a lot. He lost so much. Why not have his onetime friend/comrade pop up in the desert to spend the rest of his days with him? There's not much in canon to contradict that. (If it happens after the events of the Kenobi series.) Cody's there in the background just as he was during the Clone Wars. To uphold this claim, I would argue that a good amount of fics are very focused on Obi-Wan and his character arc, but this is of course debatable.

Also, Cody is pretty much a clean slate of a character. Sure, he has a few lines and appearances in canon, but there are as many interpretations of him as there are fics, and authors do take liberties. It's the perfect opportunity to make up whatever they like. Case in point: I'm pretty sure I've come across authors who have stated they haven't watched TCW. And their fics are more than fine. Exhibit B: people are already disagreeing within this thread, because their-just as valid-interpretation is wildly different.

Objectively, I think this is why codywan got this popular. Like disproportionately, compared to their little screentime together. Subjectively, the fics are just that great.

What is the story behind Codywan? I don't know anything about this ship that's dominating the poll!

I don’t think I’m the right person to ask. I’m not anti-Codywan or anything, I just know nothing about the ship.

However @creativside did a really good explainer in the replies of Round Nine. I’ll copy + paste it here:

Caveat: I don't ship it, but I don't ship-shame and I get the appeal. So imagine there are these two people, thrown together in a really awful war. They fight side by side, both responsible for leading others into dangerous and sometimes certain death situations. Everyday is very frightening, every day coukd be their last. One of them has magic powers, he's basically a superhero, constantly putting himself at risk to protect (more coming )

2/ the other and his men, though they were all told they're expendable. He always, *always* uses their chosen names. In spite of all this power, the magic one is constantly dropping his magic sword, and so the field officer is always keeping an eye of out for it. They often brush hands when he passes it back. They often share cramped sleeping quarters where they don't sleep much, kept awake by war. They keep each other alive, (one more)

3/ remind each other to eat, and are always looking for ways to show the other they care, since every day could be there last. Of course, it's a love that can never be. Good soldiers follow non-fraternization orders, good Jedi follow the Code of non-attachment.

Handle with care by K_R_Closson - Qui-Gon survives & Stewjoni have wings in this AU, which makes for some interesting worldbuilding. BUT to be fair, this is more codywan with taking Ahsoka as a padawan on the side but it does happen this also happens later on, so minor spoiler alert Rated M (mostly for language, though, if I recall correctly), 75k, completed, fix-it

Bitter Dregs by Livsy - AU in which Anakin goes undercover during the Rako Hardeen arc. Ahsoka and Obi-Wan grieve and try to move on. Bonus small moment between Ahsoka and Cody, 5.6k long one shot

Alpha-17 Would Like A Fucking Break by BitterChocolateStars (@bitter-chocolate-stars) another AU in which Qui-Gon survived. It's told from Alpha-17's POV which makes it h i l a r i o u s but also both codywan and Ahsoka-as-Obi-Wan's-padawan are on the side. 15k long one shot, fix-it.

I'm new to Codywan. Doyou have a list of Must Reads or Fandom Classics or anything like that? (Bonus points for longfic!)

Funnily enough, I'm not sure I'm an expert on Fandom Classics, but I do think that the long Clone Wars rewrites/fix-its are a perfect way to start! (And then you can move on to shorter fics and crazy AUs haha) So these are all longer, and can be fit into TCW continuity, even if they diverge at some point because the writers can't help themselves and will fix canon (as they should).

in our hearts some ancient song by whimsicalimages (@keensers)- Fives discovers the chips, he's on the run and gambles his life on the assumption that there's something going on between Cody and his general, so they would help him. Some amazing lore in this fic. 40k words

Golden Shield of Brightness by NerJetii (@nerjetii)- Soulmate AU, your soulmates' (romantic and platonic) names are written on your wrists. "Only" 15k, but I would recommend it even if you're not a fan of soulmate AUs (=they don't fall into each other's arms just because they're soulmates). Focuses on Obi-Wan, mostly, but we also learn a bit about how the Kaminoans treated the clones.

I am teaching myself how to be free by tattooedgreenhouse (@gershwyndl) - this might be THE Clone Wars rewrite for me because the author has taken upon themselves to literally retell the whole series from Cody's AND Obi-Wan's POV. It's ambitious, I'm pretty sure it's technically canon compliant, but we do get our happy ending. Appropriately, it's 113k long.

i'll orbit your flickering star by sunskippa (@sunskippa) - Also a Clone Wars rewrite (by this I mean that it goes through the events of the series from Cody's POV), also canon compliant, 78k words. Might be my favourite ending in the genre, beautiful. I don't even know how to sell this, but it's a must-read imo

|to failure sweet victor| by littlekaracan (@cillyscribbles)- 20k words. In case you've read all those rewrites and you just want to skip to the part where Cody leaves the Empire and they find each other again on Tatooine *with a twist*

you read my mind, I'll read yours series by sospes - This is very much canon divergent. Starts off as a mission fic, Cody and Obi-Wan discover an artefact that creates a Force-bond between them. Misunderstandings ensue. Look at the tags/ratings, some of the works later on are spicier/angstier. But you could also read the first one and call it a day if those aren't your jam. (The whole thing is 166k long at the moment.)

will you be an anarchist with me? by a_alene (@birdiedoessw) - an outsider POV (Rex's) on Cody's and Obi-Wan's relationship. With the extra twist that they can't stand each other at the beginning of the war. This is something I would've loved to read when I was getting into codywan, it's a great way to start. (25k words)

shoulder the sky series by Night Fury (@shootingstarpilot) - Last but not least, an ongoing series (all but two works are finished, more than 200k words atm). You'll have to "get through" the first work to read the more codywan-focused fics (and I don't mean this in a bad way because the story is a m a z i n g. Just so you know.) To be honest, I think it might be a bit confusing to read at the moment because as far as I can see a work was removed from the series, but it's still up? I'm not sure what happened there, but I suppose you could simply read all the author's works in chronological order :D This series is pretty much Obi-Wan AND clone troopers focused and relies a lot on the Jedi Apprentice series (which isn't canon anymore) but you're gonna be fine if you haven't read it.

Hi! I’ve read lots of CodyWan, and nothing is hitting anymore. I like very specific things, and I’ve read all the popular fics, but if you could recommend me stuff with this criteria loosely…

IMPORTANT

-With or without smut

-over 30k words,

-complete fics preferred, but if it is ongoing it has to have been updated less than 3 months ago.

MAIN POINTS:

-forbidden romance, like Cody and Obi-Wan have to sneak around to stop people from knowing

-must have happy ending. Doesn’t need to be a complete fix it but I just want them to end up happy

LESS IMPORTANT BUT I STILL LOVE:

-Sith Obi-Wan. Enemies to lovers never fails.

-Cody doesn’t have rapid aging, or it’s mentioned that it stops eventually or the chip fixes it.

-good brother relationship between the vode, especially between Cody and Rex

-clones speaking mando’a!

DO NOT INCLUDE:

-major character death

-too much angst

-any 212th/obiwan, cloneship, or poly ships including Obi-Wan or Cody. Just the two of them.

I know this is quite specific but I need a fic rec that I haven’t read before, and CodyWan was the ship that brought me to AO3! If you can’t find anything that’s okay but if you have any good recommendations, please tell me!

Hmm… Honestly, I can see why it’s hard to find fics that fit these criteria.

My first thought was The 212th Medic Skull Has Had Enough series by ihathbenobiwankebobied. It’s a colection of shorter fics, but overall more than 50k words long and there’s lots of sneaking around (and whump but they’re pretty fluffy at the same time!).

Regarding the Sith!Obi-Wan fics, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Name of the Game by esama and I got my head checked by frostbitebakery, but you might’ve read them already.

Since you said you’ve read a lot of fics, I checked ao3 for works I have not read yet, but you might be interested in them:

Peace in the Realm by Rosawyn: looks like a really intriguing medieval AU, completed, 85k, rated M, Cody and Obi-Wan are in a secret relationship

No End in Sight by TreeOfTime: rated T and up, completed, 31k, Sith!Obi-Wan, and seems promising in terms of sneakiness, since Cody’s Qui-Gon’s commander and Obi-Wan fights on the side of the Seppies.

The Good Sith series by sonnyrain: It’s long and ongoing, but it was recently updated (and 8 works are already completed) It’s a time travel fix-it, and as far as I can tell, Cody and Obi-Wan are forbidden from loving each other at first and will only get together later on.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

here are my suggestions :) as always, additions are welcome, if anyone has any, especially because I might have interpreted cowboy AU a bit laxly, depending on what you're looking for

on the river someday by Redminibike1 (@redminibike1) [locked for logged in users] - 20k long, rated M. In this AU, Cody has to leave his home with his little brothers, and thet run into Obi-Wan, the sheriff of a small town. I wholeheartedly rec this fic, it's beautifully written.

mid-autumn, post-script by cafffine (@cafffine) - a 16k long modern AU, rated T. It's more of a small town setting than western, but Cody is a mule packer. It's also an epistolary (mostly via letters from Cody to Rex), and overall it's just really funny and heartwarming.

Is that another whispered plan? by vhetin [locked for users] - 16k long, rated T, and they're both cowboys. Obi-Wan comes to work with Cody's team, and they quickly realize that there's a spark. So. Much. Flirting. It's a great read, the author did some research and it shows

Still No Rest by t4tlambert (@t4tlambert) - 5k long one shot, they're both cowboys, and it's very sweet apart from some angsty flashbacks. Usual idiots in love dynamic, haha

Hi! I’m looking for fics where Cody is a father figure - preferably to Rex, but really to any kid would also be fine. Rating doesn’t matter much but for the length if possible over 10k? (If there arent any, shorter fics are totally fine!!) , fluff or hurt/comfort or something with a generally happy ending is preferred. Thank you!

Hi, sorry, this took me a minute :)

So, first off, there's some adorable art by @ccorthal depicting Cody as a dad to Rex, and fortunately, the artist has also written a fic called love hanging on. It's a one shot (~6k words) but it's absolutely adorable :)

Saint Valentine by Trixree (@trixree) is also a modern AU on the shorter side (6k). It's rated explicit, so parenting isn't really the main focus (which is Cody's one-night stand with Obi-Wan), but it is very much part of it. Rex is one of Cody's half-siblings he's raising.

Apart from this, however, I can't really recall fics in which Cody is Rex's dad. Although it could totally happen (especially in a modern AU), Rex and Cody are usually closest in age and their dynamic is more brotherly. And sometimes there's a kid, but the father figure is mainly Obi-Wan... That doesn't mean these fics don't exist, of course, so if anyone knows any, please don't hesitate to share!

Having said that, here are my suggestions involving other kids:

so I'll take the night shift by a_alene (@birdiedoessw) is an AU in which Cody is a bounty hunter post-Order 66, he finds Luke on Tatooine and takes him in, and Obi-Wan eventually catches up with them. Cody and Luke's relationship is gold, they have their own routine and everything. As a bonus, Cody is Force-sensitive, which might be a hit or miss. It's 30k long, there's some angst but it ends happily.

I stand here right beside you by Sarcastic_Writer (@morganwrites-starwars) ~40k long AU in which Darth Vader finds Luke when he's little and tasks Cody (still mostly under the chip's control) with raising him. There are some very sweet father-son moments between the two, some complications, but it ends happily.

a glimpse of what I call home by Sunfl0wer78 (@buckytheboss) a modern AU in which Cody is a sort of father figure to Boba. Boba is a teenager, so this one might be a bit of a stretch if you're more interested in kids specifically, but I really liked their dynamic. Boba's POV is very fun to read, but who can blame him when his older brother/father keeps being embarrassing... Overall, it's 27k long, really sweet and fluffy, oh and there's also dinboba in there.

Okay, I was so ready to recommend a WIP, The Truth That Once Was by @goddammitjim – An AU in which Obi-Wan and Cody are Broadway actors performing Les Misérables. Don't get me wrong, I'd still recommend it, it's really good so far, but I can't seem to find any other fics like this, so I'm starting to think that this is the one you're talking about?

And in that case I'd like to share this one with the crowd, maybe someone has some suggestions I'm not familiar with!

Other than that, however, there's

Rhapsody in Blue by kckenobi (@kckenobi) - another modern AU in which Obi-Wan and Cody are still performers (but in an Orchestra). You might like this one if you enjoyed the above-mentioned fic, there are some similarities in that they're all colleagues and there're plenty of secrets and flashbacks to Obi-Wan's past – admittedly, it's less focused on Cody, but I don't think it's that big a stretch and it's a great read And there's this huge mystery thrown in there too (which really keeps you on the edge of your seat despite knowing who the bad guys are).

AO3 Comments are SO SO SOOOOOOO important because you can only leave Kudos ONCE. You add to the hit count ONCE (every 24 hours).

So whenever someone updates their fic, the ONLY way an author knows who their regular readers are is if they comment on each chapter. And we WANT to know who's still reading.

Believe it or not, some of us think about the name that pops up constantly in the comments and go "omg I can't wait to see what they think of THIS SPECIFIC SCENE cuz I KNOW they'll say something about it!!!"

Cody’s with him, of course, mainly disgruntled because they were supposed to be on leave and now he’s stuck doing paperwork – but when Obi-Wan gets caught up in the Kingdom’s internal politics, it’s up to his commander to get him back.

My thoughts: OH MY GOD I got rec'd this fic on the "send me your codywan fic recs" post that I made and it's AMAZING OH MY GOD. There's a Force-Bond, there's pining (so much pining, oh my god, the boys are idiots in love with big emphasis on both the idiots and the "in love" part), there's literally nothing to not love. The rest of the series is also incredible (Forget Me, Forget Me Not is my personal favorite of the sequel entries) and I feel like it's a must-read if you're a Codywan fan.

on the river someday by Redminibike1 (@redminibike1) [locked for logged in users] - 20k long, rated M. In this AU, Cody has to leave his home with his little brothers, and thet run into Obi-Wan, the sheriff of a small town. I wholeheartedly rec this fic, it's beautifully written.

mid-autumn, post-script by cafffine (@cafffine) - a 16k long modern AU, rated T. It's more of a small town setting than western, but Cody is a mule packer. It's also an epistolary (mostly via letters from Cody to Rex), and overall it's just really funny and heartwarming.

Is that another whispered plan? by vhetin [locked for users] - 16k long, rated T, and they're both cowboys. Obi-Wan comes to work with Cody's team, and they quickly realize that there's a spark. So. Much. Flirting. It's a great read, the author did some research and it shows

Still No Rest by t4tlambert (@t4tlambert) - 5k long one shot, they're both cowboys, and it's very sweet apart from some angsty flashbacks. Usual idiots in love dynamic, haha
