Pagan Discrimination

Discrimination towards Pagans mainly started with the rise of Christianity. Christians believed the practice of witchcraft was devil worshiping and associated Pagan deities with the antichrist (the Celtic deity Cernunnos is a major reason Satan and demons are often portrayed with stag antlers)

They turned things like Pentacles and Pentagrams that represented balance to things that represented evil. Deities like Cernunnos that represented nature and wild things to representing devils. The whole practice of witchcraft was turned into devil worshiping when we didn't even believe in their devils.

By demonizing witchcraft, society's views of witches have been very deluded. Usually people picture cranky old women with warts and hooked noses (which is racist btw) instead of the actual witches just trying to practice their beliefs.

A lot of it is also very misogynistic, as Pagan cultures valued both their women and men equally and women could hold positions of power.

And during the witch trials, more women were accused and executed because they were "more likely to be tempted by the devil." Especially widows and outspoken or activist women.

In Europe, an estimated 50,000 people were killed for suspected witchcraft. How many of these were actual Pagans is irrelevant because it's impossible to know, but the goal was still to eliminate witches.

To this day, there's still stigma around witchcraft and witches are frequently misrepresented in media.

It'd be bad if that was it, but it's not.

There's still plenty of stealing our holidays and traditions.

Christian holidays were placed around the time of Pagan holidays to make conversion easier. Christmas is during Yule and took a lot of Yule traditions, St. Brigid is based on an Irish god and her feast is during Imbolc, All Saints Day and now Halloween is during Samhain, etc.

St. Patrick's day isn't based on any Pagan holiday, but it still manages to erase Pagans. St. Patrick is famous for converting Ireland to Christianity, and driving away the "snakes" (which were a metaphor for Pagans).

What's even funnier is that today we associate the day with images of Leprechauns, which are a type of Celtic fae (Pagan creatures from another realm). But of course that isn't recognized.

Many types of fae have been separated from faeries (elves, dwarves, and many others). But I could talk about that for hours, let's save that for another post.

Christians managed to demonize Pagan symbols, deities, and traditions they didn't like, and take the ones they did for their own religion. Effectively erasing people's idea of Paganism and Pagan traditions and practices.

This is why it's so important to spread awareness. To share Pagan traditions and practices so people know what it really is. And to spread awareness as to how Christians buried us. Please reblog if you care about Pagans.

Hey thanks for your perspective! I like seeing what other people think of a piece of media I engage with, and I can take in what another person’s perspective can be compared to mine. I always thought it was tough to keep up with HS^2, and before Yiffy it was boring. I read the prologue for HS^2 and it was nice, but ultimately pointless.

You make a good point about Jane, and I gotta describe the surreal decision for how they builded up to Jane’s villain arc.

So there is a series of snapchats from 11/11/2016 to 12/31/16 (I think) showing conversations between Jane and Roxy (calliope is there) discussing the celebration of the return of the gods on Earth C by blowing up the moon. Jane has her transportalizer hijacked by the felt, run by Jack Noir and Jane’s account now gets post updates from felt members. Roxy and Calliope attempt to get help but Jane successfully defends herself against the felt and enslaves Jack Noir with a tiaratop, and then puts Clover in charge of her snapchat account. She escapes before the moon explodes.

So the buildup to Jane being racist was her being kidnapped and then giving her social media to a leprechaun, who worked for the main bad guy of Homestuck who is last seen on his knees with the evil red Betty Crocker thing around his neck.

Yeah I can see why Jane became evil, she was the CEO of a corporation, and running corporations just make you literally irredeemably cruel to everyone. (If you can’t tell I’m being sarcastic)

To give credit to epilogues/postcanon apologists when they argue that the story’s character’s are not acting out of character, just rather changed over time or were always like this, but just didn’t have the unrestricted worship and authority Earth C gave them, they are in a sense, correct.

What postcanon apologists forget to argue is if the execution of this change in character works within the media it is produced under, and I gotta say, an obscure set of snapchat posts released after the credits that were only dug up by fans following the Homestuck Pinterest account which preluded a character’s villain arc by having her kidnapped and unkidnap herself was a poorly executed start to a vaillain arc, maybe they should have done more with the whole Jack possessed by the tiaratop thing and Jane running the most powerful corporation on Earth C, but I don’t write Homestuck.

The tiaratop thing only gets elaborated on in Homestuck^2 later on when in panels you can see tiaratops on Crockercorp soldiers in the April 2020 updates, nearly a whole year after the epilogues dropped. Before that I’d just assumed all the people decided in unity to be racist because Jane said so and most people can’t think for themselves actually, and just believe what a nice looking authority figure says. That last part might be true considering how well James Roach has gotten along with the Homestuck fandom.

So what is the moral of the story to all this? Well being a CEO of a corporation makes you a fascist because being in a position of power makes you think you’re better than everyone else and that they should be sorted into categories you consider lesser and better by your standards.

Sure there is actual human history to the rise of fascism and why some aristocrats and corporate businessmen supported the cause but I ain’t reading all that, my hypothesis is simple to understand and affirms all the premonitions I have about the world around me, so it must be correct!

So basically the Homestuck snapchats predicted Elon Musk buying Twitter and retweeting conspiracy theorist tweets because Elon Musk is the CEO of 5 companies now.

And look out for Disney CEO Bob Iger, he’s making bad and boring Disney movies with minority lead actors ON PURPOSE to radicalize fans of old, better cinematic franchises to bring about the 4th reich!!!

Funny enough, the aim for Jane Crocker being the villain in Homestuck 2 was also to make her an allegory for DONALD TRUMP. Even the bonus story for these random nothingbuger OCs made by WhatPumpkin, were suppose to be people getting BERNIE SANDERS to become President. They even advertise support for Bernie Sanders on the official HOMESTUCK TWITTER ACCOUNT. Of course, Bernie Sanders dropped out of presidential election. HS Twitter had to delete it and WhatPumpkin had to cancel that side story. Needless to say, the force of politics in Homestuck 2 was that bad.

Ok it’s been AGES since I watched The Luck of the Irish, might do a kind of live-blog of it…because it’s already pretty wild. This kid’s parents are super a-okay sounding hella racist (by today’s standards, a very ‘I don’t see color’ attitude that was common in the 90s) by insisting “they’re Americans, and that’s all the heritage they need” to cover up the fact that the mom is (iirc) part leprechaun. Rewatching the Talons of Weng-Chiang

Oh boy. This turned out long.

Very hard to write about this one. On the one hand, it’s among the best of the Hinchcliffe-Holmes era in so many ways. The plot zips along, the dialogue is witty and quotable (“sleep is for tortoises”; “Eureka is Greek for ‘this bath is too hot’”) and it brings Victorian London to life even on a shoestring budget.

On the other hand, it is so, so racist. Even at the time – or near enough – it was being criticised for racism, with TV Ontario declining to broadcast the story in 1980 following complaints. This was the era when the BBC was still producing The Black and White Minstrel Show, which was exactly what it sounds like, and Talons was racist enough to raise criticism even in that context.

A thankfully dwindling number of Doctor Who fans make the argument that it was of its time (it wasn’t), that yellowface was necessary given the lack of Chinese actors (there are Chinese actors in this story), or that the story merely shows Victorian racial attitudes as they were (it does, but the Doctor goes along with those attitudes).

Given the egregiousness of the anti-Chinese racism, it feels churlish to reference the writing of Casey-the-Irish-stereotype, the ‘pixelated leprechaun’ (he is pixie-elated, or bewildered, not low-resolution) – but that’s not great either.

It’s almost worse that there are some glimmers of light: Li H’Sen Cheng is a brilliant, compelling character; the racism of the Victorian police is highlighted (although again, the Doctor seems to agree with it); and Cheng’s line that “I understand we all look the same to you” is bitterly comedic in the light of being delivered by a white man in yellowface. Why couldn’t Robert Holmes, writing all of that, see the problem with the rest of it?

(Then again, the BBC didn’t see the problem with Sherlock’s The Blind Banker in two-thousand-and-fucking-ten).

OK. More on the racism in a moment. For now, a few other thoughts:

This is delightfully dense with ideas that are, at best, adjacent to the main plot. The source of the Peking homunculus. Time Agents. The genetic disruption that makes the rats gigantic. It makes the story feel rich and vivid even as most of these threads go nowhere.

Does Victorian London look particularly convincing because a lot of 70s London looks grim and grubby to modern eyes?

The Rodents Of Unusual Size are extremely cute. This story was widely criticised for crappy special events and I think – as with Invasion of the Dinosaurs – it’s improved with distance because basically all the special effects of 70s Doctor Who look crap now, so it doesn’t stand out so much.

As an advert for Robert Holmes’ scriptwriting, this wasn’t improved for watching it immediately after Caves of Androzani. Oh, a villain with facial deformity who hides behind a mask and preys on young women, is it, Robert? How original. (OK, the script is overall a work of genius).

Litefoot and Jago are fabulous from beginning to end. Full marks to Litefoot, being a gentleman and eating with his hands so Leela won’t feel uncomfortable.

Leela is wonderful in this. It’s noticeable, for all its misogyny (“where’s that girl Leela got to?”) 1970s Doctor Who often gives companions a lot more to do than its modern equivalent. Sure, Martha goes off and saves the world when the Doctor is out of action, but when he’s around, she mostly stands there and asks audience stand-in questions. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane goes off and interrogates politicians and Leela stabs people with Janus thorns.

Tom Baker is so good that it feels almost weird to observe it. He’s not good at being the Doctor, he IS the Doctor.

So in trying to square this being both one of the best Doctor Who stories and one of the most racist Doctor Who stories, I find myself wondering: how would I fix it?

It’s arguable that it’s not fixable. Its core idea, that a foreign menace has come to Britain’s shores and murdered innocent young women for its own evil ends, is inherently racist, after all. (On the other hand, the idea that a British menace has come to foreign shores and murdered innocents for its own evil ends is most of the history of the 19th century). But here’s my best attempt.

Add more Chinese characters. Specifically, replace Jago. Our brash theatre owner could now be a brash Chinese immigrant theatre owner, happy to exploit the Orientalist thrills of Li H’Sen Cheng’s performance, worried about the spate of missing women near the theatre, knowing he can’t possibly go to the police himself.

Give us a bit more historical commentary. Maybe Leela can ask why there are so many Chinese people in London addicted to opium. Maybe our new Jago – or the Doctor – can explain. (Is this too much for a kids’ TV show? Not if you already have them going into an opium den, it’s not).

Weave some of that history into the plot. Perhaps Greel was trapped in the Old Summer Palace, and inadvertently released when the British burned it down.

Make Litefoot a Sinophile. As things stand, Litefoot is the personification of the British Empire, a gentleman who, despite being brought up in China, throws out racial slurs left and right and describes the Chinese as “a mysterious lot” and “odd sort of people”. Maybe, instead of feeling himself superior to China and everyone in it, he misses living there. Maybe he bonds with Jago over a shared appreciation of Chinese culture.

Ditch the yellowface. Obviously. For pity’s sake.

I'm not sure whether that would really be enough? But it would help.

"Everyone is a little bit racist", no one likes to admit that but you aint wrong. People LOVE to praise the Japanese all the time and see them as a "prodigious" people and act like their country is 100% perfect and nothing bad ever happens there and everyone wishes they could be Japanese. I've also seen people who claim they hate racism and all non whites should be protected but as soon as a Japanese person says something a bit outta line it's a 180 from them and they'll talk about how bad racism is in that country. People will unironically say all Russians are homophobic, and all Germans are nazis but racism against whites doesn't matter because "all white people are born racist and dont have systematic oppression" or some shit. It's ok to call irish people potato munching, car bombing, drunken, leprechauns but it's a problem to call black people melon eating, poor, savages who will steal your bike. No one cares if you mock Europeans. I'm half spic, but people still can't comprehend that Spaniards are white, i get told im not because im not super dark and because i cant speak the language, hell I've been told to fuck off by other Hispanic people because i can't speak the language, i was just never taught. People will act like you are less of your race because you don't act like it and somehow people don't see this as racist because it's so normalized. But whatever i know people will discard whatever i have to say because i am mostly white and i could never understand because of my genes

They unironically enforce stereotypes for the sake of progressive activism. It's crazy how little self awareness those kind of people have.

What REALLY Happened on Diwali? (written 10/27/2022, revised 12/11/2022)

Informal Script/Screenplay.

Setting: the felt are all wearing ethnic clothing while being interviewed by an unnamed journalist. The video’s perspective is through a shaky camera that goes in and out of focus at times and shows the recording length in the corner

die: well, i w-w-w-w--wwas just trying to celebrate diwali, you know the, holiday we celebrate in our home planet, Clower offered me a samosa but I declined, you know, I was p-p-p-p-p-putting the l-l-l-lights up, And then i saw... One of THEM... (slow zoom in on his face, blurry) Interviewer: Can you tell us more about what you saw? Die: (squeaks and hides his face) II-I-I- shouldnt like to keep talking now. Please turn that off

(cut to the next felt member)

Fin: You know, i saw it coming. I knew they was coming here but I didnt mention it to the others cus I didnt want to ruin everyones day! But I knew! Trace: (holding on to him and snuggling him) You didnt tell me neither... fin: (is also holding trace) No trace... No i didn't... Interviewer: So you knew they were coming? did you see them doing anything? fin: Yeah but i figured, maybe I should have a little fiath this time, maybe they celebrate it too. WRONG! Interviewer: what did they do? Trace: (wrapping his tongue around fins tongue) fin: (holding tace closer) Trace: (breaks off) excuse me, will you turn off the camera, this is a PRIVATE MOMENT.

(camera out of focus before zooming on Eggs face at a weird angle) Eggs: They were so mean to us, they dont want us to be happy. They bullied us on diwali. Interviewer: How did they bully you? Eggs: I was iwth biscuits and puttig, rangoli on the floor so we went in to put the rangoli in the hallway. I use my timer to make a lot of it. And we saw graffiti on the wall. Noboydy in my gang makes graffiti beucuse crowbar would kill us so we knew this wasnt one of us, it was spades slick and his gang.

The graffiti is shown: "YOUR SHITE AT CRICKET" "YOU'RE KITSCHEN AND CLOTHES SMEL BAD LIKE REALLY BAD LIKE A DEAD ANAMAL, PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU ARE SO RETARDED AND EAT CURRY" "I AM BIASED AGAINST YOUR RELIGION"

Eggs: (crying because hes so upset) They hate us and they were racist to us on diwali . interviewer: Thank you for sharing your experience so bravely

Clover: HEE HEE HEE! (dancing) BEFORE I CAN TELL YOU THE TRUTH ABOUT DIWALI, YOU MUST PROVIDE THE ANSWERS TO MY RIDDLES THREE!

(Almost immediate cut)

crowber: they RUINED diwali. interviewer: who? crowbar: YOu know... THe crew. The midnight crew. I know on derse they practice that other religion, they wear tthose headscarfs and stuff. I dont really get it. They’re not civilised people. interviwer: How did they ruin diwali? Crowbar proceeds to tell the only coherent story thus far detailing various scenes about the crew cartoonishly ruining the felts diwali playground bully style. His dialogue fades away as it shows the scene happening in real time: Hindu party music is playing before the crew busts in and a record scratches and islamic Allah worship music starts playing. Boxcars smashes a light on the wall causing all of Eggs time travel duplicate lights to become destroyed and go out at the same time. a close up shot of Slick spitting in the curry and the spit travelling down the curry in slow motion while droog pours dal down the kitchen sink. Deuce stacks several rectangular boxes of indian sweets on his head with his hat on top wihle flailing his arms around

After the showing of this skirmish the final interview is with spades slick himself who briefly talks about the event from his perspective and goes on in a thinly veiled india vs pakistan rant except its derse vs leprechauns. the end. And actually some time after i wrote this i realised it would be infinitely more fitting for it to just be prospit vs derse but its ok.
