If you are a vampire fiction fan, a folklore nerd, or have gotten caught up in the dracula daily fun, PLEASE listen to the two part vampires episode of the Ologies podcast from last October. The guest is a professor who teaches a class on vampires in folklore and fiction and it’s such an outstanding and informative interview I’ve listened to it several times.

My media this week (24-30 Dec 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*delighted* this show went straight to full musical episode in only the second season. amazing.
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Hither, Page (Page & Summers #1) (Cat Sebastian, author; Joel Leslie, narrator) - reread; christmas-set post WW2 cozy mystery (vibes are basically 'agatha christie but queer')
🥰 The Missing Page (Page & Summers #2) (Cat Sebastian, author; Joel Leslie, narrator) - reread; the further adventures of Leo & James
😍 We Could Be So Good (Cat Sebastian, author; Joel Leslie, narrator) - reread; this was one of my fave books of the year tbh; loved the setting and the characters and the vibe
😍 Bells Are Ringing (A We Could Be So Good Holiday epilogue) (Cat Sebastian) - so grateful that Cat S gifts us a holiday epilogue every year!
🥰 The Things We Hide (ThePirateStorm) - 109K, stucky no powers omegaverse/accidental mpreg with fantastic amounts of pining and a great cast of fully realized supporting characters; I fucked up my sleep schedule to finish reading this and had zero regrets.
🥰 I'd Swing With You for the Fences (nontoxic) - 86K, Schitt's Creek AU with MLB player Patrick and David (who's still mostly canon David) - very warm and sweet and absolutely DELIGHTFUL
🥰 Third Eye (Felicia Day, author; full voice cast) - comedy fantasy audio drama about Laurel, who 15 yrs ago was the Chosen One and who…failed. Now her life is sad but she gets a 2nd chance when a terrible teen (who may also be the Chosen One) cannonballs into her life. Had a lot of fun listening to this, great voice cast featuring FD, Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton, London Hughes
💖💖 +186K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
[PODFIC] A Nativity of Oranges (Tanouska) - MCU: stucky, 9K - great podfic, reread, great Stucky holiday fic
How The Elf-King Stole Khuzmus (DeHeerKonijn, PointlesslyPoetic) - LOTR: 1.3K - a The Hobbit/Dr. Seuss mashup, very clever, great art
[Podfic of] Spaceships & Laserswords (blackglass, klb, luvtheheaven (VioletEmerald), reena_jenkins, Shmaylor, silverandblue, wordsaremyfaith) - Star Wars: finnpoe, 4K - great podfic of a short but hilarious & very sweet fic - modern AU where weirdo hermit Luke joins the (college-age) 'kids' D&D game & volunteers his sister to DM
[Podfic] Mission Impossible (quietnight) - MCU: shrunkyclunks, 20K - hilarious shrunkyclunks fic, great podfic version of it
flow through (rainbow_nerds) - Stranger Things: steddie, 6K - a gift for me! I requested @rainbow-nerdss continue in the universe created by sharp temporary walls and it was everything I could have wanted!!!! 💜

I love most Ologies episodes but oh my god do I hate it when Alie interviews an old dude who keeps interrupting her and doesn't follow social cues at all

i love ologies because from the episodes i’ve listened to, the guests on the show are usually like “yeah i’ve always had an interest in this thing i’m now pursuing professionally”. our younger selves are perhaps the most in-tune version of ourselves and we should look to them when we’re lost.

- 🫶🦇🤍✨
Hi, Hey, what’s up!!! got some answers for you!!
3 & 9 instead of 10 & 15
Ask Game based on Ologies Podcast AMA episode
3 Have you always been this amazing or did this develop over time?
i have never been amazing haha i was always the forgotten kid in school, the one no one wanted to be friends with so i definitely wasn’t amazing when i was i kid, i don’t think im amazing now either so like idk 🤷🏻‍♀️
9 What is your favourite cryptid?
sirens and the chupacabra. being from farmland mexico, i 100% the chupacabra is out there and he killed my favorite goat. 😭 hes oddly my favorite. He’s just a funky thing out there. Sirens luring men to death, hell yeah. idk i think it’s cool 😂
11 What’s your favourite flower and why?
Im not much a flower girl to say i have a favorite. i can tell you which ones i hate though hahaha i strongly dislike sunflowers. i see one i run. Hang on, a while ago i said i liked a flower, let me see if i can find it *insert per aspera ad inferí as hold music* mmmmm i can’t find it. Would it be weird if i said my favorite flower is a dead rose????? like i love the aesthetic of it. 🥀
21 What’s something you regret not doing?
oh uh. mmm. i don’t think i regret anything major? i regret a lot of little things. like i shouldn’t have had that extra chocolate piece cause now my teeth hurt kind of things. i’ll regret the little things, then get over it so quick haha I don’t know, i don’t think there’s anything i regret not doing really 🤷🏻‍♀️
27 Would you rather be a bear-sized chipmunk or a chipmunk-sized bear?
chipmunk sized bear hands down. I love being smol. Smol and cute! yes pls. 🐻 someone could have me as a pet to love and care for hahah

I'd fallen asleep with the light on and woke up two hours later, panicking about other people. Did I cross a boundary by hugging that person two months ago? Is someone mad at work because I was more lenient toward someone else? When someone publicly praised me and didn't mention other people who equally deserve praise, did I handle it badly? Does everyone resent me?
Earlier, in the office alone while stuffing envelopes, I listened to most of the Ologies podcast episode on Quasithanatology. It shifted my perspective. I started thinking about witchcraft, which at one time I thought I would practice but it never settled right. I thought about nature, and the universe, and the feeling that sometimes we really can feel what other people are feeling because we're all connected.
And then I tried reading a chapter of I, Robot and fell asleep with the light on, then got up and watched The Green Knight.
I didn't know this was a Christmas movie.
Tumblr media
This was like a scene out of Shadow of the Colossus. This is when I started getting interested, when the confinements of the city spread out into the vastness of nature.
He's moving out of the red, into the green.
I especially loved that speech, where red is emotion and green is rot. And everything is connected.
This is one of those times when I feel like the universe is trying to tell me something. Or maybe listening to an existential podcast episode put me in the mood to seek out a film I knew would be existential. I like it very much.
Tomorrow I'll be alone in the office again, and there will be more envelopes to stuff.

Rose
rose— do you believe in soulmates? why or why not?
No I don't, and I think the idea of soulmates can be a dangerous one. I'll allow Benjamin Karney, professor of social psychology at the University of California specializing in the study of marriage, to explain. I've felt this way for a long time, but he has a better way of saying it.
This is from an interview he had with Alie Ward on her podcast Ologies. (Wonderful podcast BTW)

My media this week (21-27 Jan 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Cat Person (The_She_Devil) - 72K, shrunkyclunks - Bucky's the SHIELD agt tasked with bringing newly defrosted Steve up to speed on the 21st century - there's really hot sex in a secluded cabin PLUS feelings. All around deliciousness.
😊 Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire (W. Scott Poole, author; Enrique McGavin, narrator) - interesting, edifying, depressing. Not as much discusssion of the films as I expected/would have liked - like 70% rundown of USian imperial activities of the last two centuries, 30% horror/scifi film discussion. [In hindsight, should have read this in text, as there were passages I really wanted to highlight/quote and the narration was…weird. Voice sound & tone was OK but there were lots of bizarre pauses. Sometimes when reading a quotes from a notable figure, the narrator did do some very credible imitations of Clinton & Reagan.]
😍 Waking Up Slow (odetteandodile) - 44K, shrunkyclunks - single dad Bucky, living in a isolated lighthouse in Canada, finds an amesiac, just-thawed Steve Rogers washed up on his beach… (reread for stucky bookclub, forever fave!)
😊 for a good time, call… (EvanesDust) - 46K, sterek, omegaverse fake-dating - solidly enjoyable
😊 Maurice (E.M. Forester, author; Peter Firth, narrator) - read this for a discord book club, can't believe I hadn't read it before & it's been 30 years since I watched the movie. Forester's language & turn of phrase is amazing.
🥰 And My Love Life Waits for Me (Bittersweet_in_Boston (author); Alaskan_Outsider (artist)) - 62K, shrunkyclunks soulmate fic - satisfyingly enjoyable, not nearly as dark as the tags might make you think
💖💖 +190K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Own Me series (nrnyx) - TW: Jordan/Derek /Stiles, 62K (series) - Stiles gets picked up by husbands Jordan & Derek at the club and what starts as a very hot one night stand becomes so much more. Very werewolfy omegaverse stuff. Hot quality smut but also action-y plot!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Goncharov (berlincorpography) - Goncharov (1973): OFC / OFC, 6K - very clever & funny fic featuring disaster lesbians, film criticism & academia
Once Upon a Time (softestpunk) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 14K - just so soft & warm, pure delight! They're both single dads! Falling in love! Dream is a children's librarian!

winter is harsh, but some things still thrive, if you know where to look
If you are like me and get desperate for green things in winter, I highly recommend the Bryology episode of the Ologies podcast. Learn about a really cool little plant from an expert scientist (Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer) who researches moss professionally! And then go outside and look at some moss
