😍 Death in the Spires (KJ Charles, author; Tom Lawrence, narrator) - historical murder mystery set in 1905 Oxford - another KJC absolute banger: incredible sense of place, fantastic characters, perfectly done 'whodunnit' tension and a HIGHLY SATISFACTORY resolution. Loved every word

@shark-myths I had to think of The House on Rosewood Lane listening to this

Caroline Crampton's podcast is wholly wonderful, there are also a few episodes about queer themes in detective stories.

I can also wholeheartedly recommend her former podcast srsly - that takes all things pop culture seriously, with her colleague then from the New Statesman, Anna Leszkiewicz.

are you still doing podcast recs? I love shows like Pod Watcher (friends talking casually about random stuff they like), infinite monkey cage, shedunnit, and slightly foxed (nerdy but friendly science/lit themed)

first of, I had no idea the Watcher crew had a podcast ??? so thank you so much for the info

now, I don't listen to much non-fiction when it comes to podcasts but :

Distractible - 10/10 absolutely hilarious, very chill

Gaelic Song Stories - very interesting show, the guests always bring fascinating stories and I love the host dearly

I only listen to the Mountain Goats- even if you don't listen to the Mountain Goats at all, that's such a nice show I'm sure everyone can enjoy it

Apparently great country houses of England being converted for public use was a prevalent fear and occurrence a century after this poem was written:

This podcast episode does point to Manderley’s burning as symbolic of the end of the great country house in general, and indeed in Rebecca there is a minor character who tells to the narrator that these posh houses are coming to an end in Chapter 19.

Unlike Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca or (seemingly - I haven’t yet read that book) his Caribbean equivalent in Windward Heights, Heathcliff does not burn these luxurious houses, nor does he convert them into public use like the rebels in the above poem, but instead he simply owns them. Heathcliff takes advantage of the conventional tools to get his revenge rather than simply employing simple destruction.

Shedunnit is a wonderful little podcast about the golden age of detective fiction. I highly recommend it if you're at all a fan of cozy mysteries, even if you haven't read much of the genre - my only experience is a couple Agatha Christies and some BBC mystery shows. The host discusses a wide range of topics, including specific authors, widely used tropes, famous cases of the day and how they inspired mystery authors, and what sociopolitical issues shaped the genre.

It's smart, engaging, and oddly soothing and nostalgic. I can't recommend it enough!

Hello! I have just binge read all the Lord Peter Wimsey books in the space of a few weeks. Do you have any recommendations of similar style mysteries? I adore the style and characterisation of LPW and crave something similar. People have recced the continuation by Jill Paton Walsh but I am hesitant. Anyway, I would love any recommendations! Also I am very much enjoying this podcast!

It’s so tricky to recommend things similar to Sayers, because the elements of the novels that draw people to Sayers can vary so much, and the things that make her so special to us are also fairly unique! (and we can’t comment on the JPW continuations, as neither of us as read them).

HOWEVER! Since you mention specifically that you’re drawn to the style and characterization of Lord Peter, I (Charis) am going to make a personal recommendation that’s out of genre and period, but in keeping (at least for me!) in character, and suggest the Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whelan Turner ( @meganwhalenturner ). It’s YA fantasy, and if that’s not your usual cup of tea then PLEASE give at least the first to books a try anyway! They begin with The Thief, and continue in The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, Conspiracy of Kings, and Thick as Thieves. The final book, Return of the Thief, is on the horizon.

Mina Murray is an unemployed twenty-something, jigsaw puzzler, and brand new Podcaster. Her life doesn’t exactly make for interesting content. That is until her best friend Lucy falls mysteriously ill and Mina’s boyfriend Jonathan loses contact on a work trip to Romania…" Very creative, very queer, very enjoyable!

🥰 ship-to-ship combat (pomeloquat) - 76K, SuperBat - "Clark, in an attempt to make some spare cash, unintentionally stumbles into the world of superhero fanfiction, becomes a prolific writer for Gotham's OTP, and tries his best to fend off rival fans who want him to convert to superbat instead." - extremely funny and delightful identity porn fic

🥰 Tension and Tonic (Zenaidamacrouras1) - 78K, cellist!Bucky/artist!Steve, one night stand that develops feelings. Mostly hilarious, with some fantastic characterizations, especially of the supporting characters. Fic does go to some pretty dark thoughts very briefly but ultimately the vibe I ended up with was much more on the funny side of the scale.

Hugs. Snuggles with dogs and cats. Spending time with my dog, Elvis. When Elvis puts his paw on my knee or nudges me with his nose to get a pat. Walks. Walks with company. Walks alone. Along the stretch of creek about twenty minutes from my house with the large gums and the bubbling water over stones and the swing bridge and market garden in the sun on a not too hot morning. Reading. Reading cosy books. Reading good books or fic with a fresh mug of tea and maybe some buttered toast. In fact, stories make me happy. Stories and storytelling in all its forms. Stephen Michael King and Alison Lester picture books. The Shedunnit podcast. Curated playlists. Live theatre. Shared jokes. Shared food. Cooking. Cooking for friends and family, especially when it turns out perfectly and everyone is having a good time. Getting lunch out with friends. Getting cocktails with friends on the rare occasion I can afford them. Boardgame nights. Summer fruit. Holidays by the beach. Holding hands. Walks along the beach, whatever the weather. Rock pooling. Exploring. Cosy fireside drinks in pubs after walking along the beach in the middle of winter. Wildflowers. Spring.

This change, and the backlash to it, is all there to be found in the murder mysteries of the period, if you just dig a little below the surface. 😊 Dark Carnivals: Modern Horrors and the Origins of American Empire (W. Scott Poole, author; Enrique McGavin, narrator) - interesting, edifying, depressing. Not as much discusssion of the films as I expected/would have liked - like 70% rundown of USian imperial activities of the last two centuries, 30% horror/scifi film discussion. [In hindsight, should have read this in text, as there were passages I really wanted to highlight/quote and the narration was…weird. Voice sound & tone was OK but there were lots of bizarre pauses. Sometimes when reading a quotes from a notable figure, the narrator did do some very credible imitations of Clinton & Reagan.]

😍 Waking Up Slow (odetteandodile) - 44K, shrunkyclunks - single dad Bucky, living in a isolated lighthouse in Canada, finds an amesiac, just-thawed Steve Rogers washed up on his beach… (reread for stucky bookclub, forever fave!)

😊 for a good time, call… (EvanesDust) - 46K, sterek, omegaverse fake-dating - solidly enjoyable

😊 Maurice (E.M. Forester, author; Peter Firth, narrator) - read this for a discord book club, can't believe I hadn't read it before & it's been 30 years since I watched the movie. Forester's language & turn of phrase is amazing.

🥰 And My Love Life Waits for Me (Bittersweet_in_Boston (author); Alaskan_Outsider (artist)) - 62K, shrunkyclunks soulmate fic - satisfyingly enjoyable, not nearly as dark as the tags might make you think

🙂 Under Alien Skies: A Sightseer's Guide to the Universe (Phil Plait, author & narrator) - The Bad Astronomer paints pictures of what the sky would look like standing on the surface of other planets, asteroids, etc.

😊 Initiation (Sex Wizards #1) (Alethea Faust) - erotic BDSM fantasy - actually a bit more plot & worldbuilding than I was expecting tbh, entertaining

😞 Miss Aldridge Regrets (Canary Club Mystery #1) (Louise Hare, author; Georgina Campbell, narrator) - This isn't a mystery the MC investigates, it's a mystery that happens TO her. She was tediously passive, seeming really rather naïve & foolish (esp given her age and life experience) and entirely in denial about pretty much everything that happens to her (since she's being actively framed for murder). However, the very short interval chapters from the killer's perspective did hook my interest and left me genuinely curious about the mystery. At about 44% I jumped to the end to see how the mystery resolved. I'm counting it as read since I did read over 50% of it.
