I looked into adoption once and these days you really might as well just build your own kid. Adoption is so difficult and complicated! It's not like the good old days, when you could just find a random kid on the street in Liverpool, make some vague inquires to see if anyone owned him, then stuff him in your jacket and carry him the three day walk home whilst destroying the fiddle and losing the whip you promised to your biological children, and then you just give him a single name and you're set!

(🔥 for the unpopular opinion ask)
Wuthering Heights:
I find Heathcliff's treatment of Linton more appalling than his treatment of Isabella. Other readers often seem to view his abuse of Isabella as his darkest hour and not care as much about Linton because they don't like Linton. But to me, while of course what Isabella goes through is horrible, there's something more uniquely horrible about Heathcliff abusing his own mortally ill teenage son. It doesn't matter that Linton is an unpleasant person: he's still a dying teenager and he's still Heathcliff's own child. This more than anything else is why Heathcliff "stands unredeemed" to me.

Anyway, Nigar’s crush didn’t come out of nowhere.
Magnificent Century live is on Episode 3 and Nigar is already acting kind of like she has a crush on Ibrahim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Granted it might just be fear too since Ibrahim treats her like shit, but it does register as a crush.
I don’t think this was on their mind yet, they probably saw the performance of the actress and decided to make them a Thing later. I think this because Nigar was genuinely happy about Hatice and Ibrahim’s marriage in Episode 14 lol. Maybe she hadn’t realized she had a crush on him yet.

Thanks for responding. That’s definitely weird.
But:
1- As you also said, this is weirdness for the sake of fan-service (as are the dream sequences above). It is not flirting really.
2- It comes from Hürrem to Ibo rather than vice versa. What this person I was arguing with tried to say was that Ibo was flirting with any woman in those episodes, was even worse with Hürrem, so his actions towards Nigar above doesn’t mean anything for his cheating arc. Yeah, I call bullshit on that.

I made this post on Twitter too and someone said to me that Ibrahim had “even worse” flirtatious scenes with Hürrem during these episodes.
So can please someone direct me to these flirtatious Hürrem/Ibrahim scenes in late Season 1/early Season 2? I genuinely can’t remember them but it might be because it is not something I focused on unlike with Nibrahim.
Their nightmares involving the other having a hand in their own execution in Episodes 22 and 24 were a bit weird admittedly, but besides that I really don’t remember any flirtatious scenes between them, at least not ones “worse” than the above. I remember Ibo caressing Leo’s cheek but not Hürrem’s lol.

“Behlül leaned in a little, and no doubt wishing to end this conversation, said in his most rakish tone, ‘you aren’t old enough to be busying your thoughts with the marriages of other people. Until Nihal has grown a little, there is only one person who could persuade me to marry…’
Firdevs Hanım did not allow him to finish. Truly affronted this time, she said, ‘be quiet. I don’t at all like mixing jest into serious matters.’ Then she remembered something else. ‘Ah, I was forgetting one other thing I had to tell you. I talked of this business with Nihal to one other person.’
With a strange expression, she was waiting for him to discover this other person. There was such a piercing look in Firdevs Hanım’s eyes that Behlül could not answer, and with an involuntary weakness, he dropped his gaze. Firdevs Hanım replied, with all the nonchalance she could muster in her voice: ‘to Bihter.’”
(Chapter 17) (italics mine)
I love this part because until this Firdevs had been characterized as “cringe” and “delusional”, especially when she is with Behlül. But here we see that Firdevs actually knows how she is seen by Behlül, knows that this is all a joke, and she only participated in it because she herself enjoyed the joke too. But now it is time for her evil schemes and she won’t stand for Behlül wasting her time by making fun of her with inane sarcasm.

In Seasons 1 and 2 reading the actors’ names in the MC intro wasn’t interesting because it was all the same characters. In the later seasons and especially in the second half of Season 4 it is actually interesting because the dramatis personae changes every episode. It is like a countdown to who will survive to the finale.

Okay I am watching a video essay on sexual asphyxiation (don’t even ask) and I have to say:
1) Being choked so regularly (never in a sexual way as far as we know; and not just by Ibrahim, but mainly by Ibrahim) definitely might have had an effect on Nigar’s incredibly deteriorating psychology after Season 1.
2) Nigar didn’t necessarily have a choking kink. It doesn’t seem to be choking itself that gets her going.
It is the one who choked her suddenly kissing her that gets her going.
On the origins of Nigar’s crush on Ibrahim, there can be two likely theories:
1) She had a latent crush from the start (which is what I subscribe to due to their brief scene together in Episode 3) which became something big after the first time he was kind to her.
2) She was indifferent to him for 17 episodes, then he caressed her cheek randomly in Episode 17 and boom she had a crush.
In either case, the cheek-caressing is the vital part, not the choking. Choking is their current dynamic, the kiss is what Nigar wants it to be. And her eventual actual relationship with Ibrahim seems to be a “tender” one, though this being a Turkish soap opera shown on national television we of course are not privy to the details.
This all is why I don’t like her eventual crush on Rüstem. Ibrahim is hot and cold towards Nigar which is what makes her confused and obsessed. Rüstem is just cold towards her - there are no random moments of kindness and heart eyes followed by violent interrogations with Rüstem like there was with Ibrahim. He mostly does not give even a little bit of fuck about her. Yes Rüstem saved Nigar’s life due to Hürrem’s orders but Nigar iirc starts to truly become interested in him when he chokes her which… reveals that the new writers truly didn’t get Nigar in any way. And she is not even a particularly complicated character to understand, you will just have to pay a little bit of attention to the details and the timeline. They just dgaf. I guess it is difficult to write a script for each week for 30-40 weeks of the year, but I don’t know, why are you even keeping Nigar in the show and giving her so many scenes then? Also, this is your job?

I also tend to use them interchangeably in writing, though I sometimes specify the latter as “Younger Cathy. And in any case it must not be difficult to understand based on the context. My tags are “Catherine Earnshaw” for the elder and “Cathy Linton” for the younger.

The best quote.
[Heathcliff] went down: I set him a stool by the fire, and offered him a quantity of good things: but he was sick and could eat little, and my attempts to entertain him were thrown away. He leant his two elbows on his knees, and his chin on his hands, and remained rapt in dumb meditation. On my inquiring the subject of his thoughts, he answered gravely—‘I’m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. I don’t care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last. I hope he will not die before I do!’ ‘For shame, Heathcliff!’ said I. ‘It is for God to punish wicked people; we should learn to forgive.’ ‘No, God won’t have the satisfaction that I shall,’ he returned. ‘I only wish I knew the best way! Let me alone, and I’ll plan it out: while I’m thinking of that I don’t feel pain.’

An important quote that I value a lot. Heathcliff didn’t naturally hate “culture” and education, he was made unable to pursue it.
[Heathcliff] had by that time lost the benefit of his early education: continual hard work, begun soon and concluded late, had extinguished any curiosity he once possessed in pursuit of knowledge, and any love for books or learning. His childhood’s sense of superiority, instilled into him by the favours of old Mr. Earnshaw, was faded away. He struggled long to keep up an equality with Catherine in her studies, and yielded with poignant though silent regret: but he yielded completely; and there was no prevailing on him to take a step in the way of moving upward, when he found he must, necessarily, sink beneath his former level.

A typical Graeme Tytler essay on Wuthering Heights goes the Goldilocks Way: This set of characters are wrong in this way, this other set of characters are wrong in that way, Cathy 2 and Hareton are just right.
I love his essays even when I don’t always agree with his conclusions. His essays can strike most of you as too prosaic, matter-of-fact and even slightly conservative for a book like Wuthering Heights, but I think this breed of sense is exactly what WH literary criticism needs. I like Tytler’s text-based approach and him according equal value to all parts of the text, Nelly and Joseph’s squabbles aren’t worth less to him than Cathy and Heathcliff’s love. Too many WH essays lose themselves in a couple of passages instead of looking at the whole of the text, and Tytler’s essays are the perfect antidote to that.
He is also from what I could find on the internet a very old man now, and he is still writing a dozen Wuthering Heights essays every year. I find him honestly inspiring, a scholar after my own heart.
Anyway, all fans of Wuthering Heights should read his essays even if they don’t agree with them.
