"You want me to help you?" A quizzical look befell your face as you look up from your spot under the shaded tree. You sat by the edge of the lake, you were taking a quick break hiding from the younger campers who wanted to train with you as you were a crowd favorite with the new arrivals. You just needed a recharge, a moment away from the energy that overexerted you. "Of all people?"
Leo rolled his eyes, "Who else?"
You snorted, "Cabin 6 is that way." You pointed and nodded your head in the direction of the Goddess of Wisdom's cabin, filled with the brightest minds and much better options to help Leo with his current request.
"C'mon baby, please?" Your boyfriend pouted and lowered his chin to gain your favor with his golden brown eyes that, you were afraid to admit, made you weak.
"But I'm tired and I want to take a nap, using my brain will probably kill me at this point."
He knelt with outreached hands, you allowed him to hold both of your palms in his own, you should have known better. He used his strength to pull you up from the ground and brought you to his chest, his hands settled on your hips.
Instinctively you looped your arms around his neck and rolled your head to the right, tilted perfectly for him to mold his lips to yours. And he did, pecking chaste kisses onto your lips, pleading with you to join him in Bunker 9.
"I suppose I could be persuaded," You nudged your nose against his.
~~~
The moment you arrived inside the bunker and saw his work table, normally filled with scattered tools and mechanical pieces that were in the process of being fixed or tweaked, was now littered with papers.
Leo's homework was divided into five different sections that had their respective piles. "By some miracle, I finished everything else, now all I'm missing is this." He reveals papers that were held behind his back.
"Math." You skim the equations on the document in your hands, nothing on this page was anything you would be able to help him with.
The smirk on his face made you glare at him and fold your arms stubbornly, "Yup," Leo rolled two chairs over to the desk that felt like your new timeout spot.
"Honestly, I feel like I shouldn't be subjected to torture because you decided to take courses over the summer."
"What happened to 'you die, I die'?" He reiterated the phrase you had spoken to him as a sort of mantra during the war. Your jaw dropped at the use of them being thrown back in your face and quickly shut it close.
"In the face of war!" You exclaimed and shrugged it off, "Just for that, you can die alone."
"I did, it wasn't my vibe," He twirled a strand of your hair, and let it fall back into place, stepping back with a hand on his hip leaning the other on the table. "Aren't you testy today?"
"It's been a day, the kids were hard to gather and once I had them riled up they wanted to learn this specific trick they've seen me do but how many times can I let them down gently and tell them they need to learn the basics- drills that they've repeated hundreds of times, that some still aren't getting and will possibly die if they get caught by a monster if they don't get-" You inhale deeply, "So what do I do? I let them learn the hard way to get it through their heads that it's not as simple as it looks and I've only managed after years of fucking practice. And you know what?"
"What?" You wanted to smack the amused smirk off of Leo's pretty face.
"They didn't pick it up like I knew they wouldn't, now they hate me but still wanna train with me because they still want me to teach them. My body is sore, I'm tired and I hate you for making me do homework," You pout.
He approaches you with caution, slowly caressing your cheeks in his hands, he presses his lips against yours that were currently being smushed together by his hands. It was a quick but meaningful kiss, only for him to say "I'm going to fail if I don't get this done."
"Leo!" You push him away from you. "What the hell do you mean, you're going to fail, you've been cooped up in here all summer!"
A sheepish smile and pink-dusted cheeks appear at your sudden outburst, he chuckles nervously knowing he just put the cherry on top of your already bad day. "I've been behind on a couple of assignments and I've finished most of them already, I'm mostly caught up"
"Mostly?" You were going to strangle him. You haven't spent much time together lately because of his homework. He decided to take summer classes to get ahead, and he's been busy ever since. You were constantly teaching the younger campers, and helping out around camp, whether in the infirmary or setting up activities to keep busy and you loved it but you missed your boyfriend.
"But Nyssa had this project she'd been working on and I couldn't help it."
You rolled your eyes and sighed, you couldn't be upset with him- not completely, you understood how hard it was for Leo to stay focused on a task that wasn't something he could physically tinker with, but there had been moments where you wanted to just be with him in his presence and you stopped yourself from going to him knowing that you'd only be a distraction.
"I promise this is the only one left," He takes your hand and leads you to sit on a chair then sits in another one next to you.
"I'm so annoyed with you right now," You snatch the paper and look over the equations.
An hour and a half into the 50-question work packet, you and Leo moved to the mattress lifted by wooden pallets used for shipping crates. 36 out of 50 equations were done, with work shown, Leo had barely any trouble working on it as he was naturally good with numbers you weren't sure you were needed at all.
You solved a couple for him when he got bored and started leaving trails of kisses from your cheek to your neck and shoulder, you were sure the answer was right and took a break, though when he pulled out of his dazed and loving state he looked over it and kissed you deeply.
"What was that for?" You asked in a whisper.
"A reward," He held your chin with his forefinger and thumb, pecking your cheek. "For helping me with my homework."
"Well, if I don't help you get this done, who will?"
"Malcolm and I are pretty tight," Leo has a deep stare on your lips, his thumb swipes your swollen bottom lip. "You've also got eight of them wrong, Mi Amor."
"I did nine of them," You did the math- that you weren't good at in your head, piecing together that you indeed sucked. "Why'd you ask me to help you, if you knew that I couldn't do math."
"I wanted to be around you, it's been a while since we've been alone." He toys with the bracelet he gifted you on your first anniversary, five charms for the five years you've been together since you confessed your feelings at age 17 after the war ended. You met at age 15 when Annabeth brought him to camp, and the rest is history.
"I'm still annoyed at you, you know, just because I've let you kiss me a couple of times doesn't mean-" He cuts you off with another kiss like earlier, catching you off-guard, intense and full of feeling. You immediately kiss back, not having the willpower to not, succumb to the charms he begrudgingly has on you.
You deepen the kiss by entangling your hands in his hair pulling his impossibly closer, it was a synchronized dance at first, the years of being used to the pattern of each other's kiss being shown in the heavy minutes of your mouths moving together in passion. It soon became heated, teeth clashing, tongues moving sloppily, mouths chasing each other after breaking apart two seconds at a time for breath.
Leo gently laid you on your back, breaking apart to take off his shirt, the moment it slipped off you brought him down to you, he fit perfectly between your legs. You gasp at the sensation of him grinding against you. He parts his lips from yours, to which you whine softly. He licks a stripe from your neck to your jaw and sucks until he's satisfied with the way you sigh and rock your body up and clutching onto the blades on his shoulders on his back.
He repeats licking, sucking, and kissing soft kisses as an apology for the spots he bit until you were sore.
You pull away from him and flip your bodies so that you are on top, you grab his wrists and pin them to the top of the pillows to see his reaction and wanting to be in control for a while. You gave him the same treatment and brought your body lower so that you could kiss all over his chest and back up.
You sat up to breathe fresh air, straddling him and releasing his hands only for him to intertwine his hands with yours and play with your fingers. He bucks his hips up playfully, and you jump slightly, your eyes widen for a second, and your lips turn up in a grin.
"You've gotten better at not... you know," You hint at the control Leo's gained with his fire powers. Heated makeouts like this were often interrupted by the smell of smoke or his skin feeling feverish.
He lets go of your hands and places his larger hands on your hips, you ignore the butterflies that flutter in your heart and stomach at the way he rubs up your waist and hips. "My hair was steaming earlier, I was hoping you didn't notice, thankfully you didn't or this would've been awkward."
"It's not awkward when that happens Leo, it's a little funny, to be honest, part of the reason why I love you." You tell him earnestly, "Nothing's awkward with you, you're my best friend."
"I love you," Leo responds with unwavering eyes on yours. "I'm sorry for the time we lost."
"It's okay, we were just making up for it."
I wanna write a Leo Valdez one shot but think I just came up with one of the saddest plots ever…
SPOILERS AHEAD
Did y’all see the look in Luke’s eyes during the betrayal scene? It was HEART BREAKING. It hurt so much omg.
So imagine this y’all, Luke with a biological sister and he betrays camp, leaving Y/N behind because he wants to keep her out of the mess he’s created.
Being Luke’s sister, she obviously has experience with a sword. She goes on to being one of the best sword fighters and Luke is just proudly watching in the shadows.
“Go Little Rock star.”
IT HURTSSSS OMG
platonic liper hcs cause I can.
Leo braids Piper's hair
Piper had an Undercut and Leo helps her trim it (and he's the one who cut it in the first place)
Piper is the only person Leo is OK about letting his guard down around
Building off that last one: Leo feels EXTREMELY guilty abt his Mum, and one night at the wilderness school he just breaks down and Piper finds him and he tells her everything,
They share clothes (both like oversized stuff)
Leo absolutely hates the fact he likes Jason, (his Best Friend's bf. if I'm staying canon compliant)
even after Piper moves she and Leo are still in contact and Iris message all the time
Piper does her best to make sure Leo never finds out what FNAF is because she KNOWS Leo would try to recreate it (I mean, is she wrong?)
people usually assume they're either biologically related or dating
Piper can't cook for shit, Leo is actually really good
they're the kind of friends who text (in this case iris message) so much when they meet up in person they literally have nothing to talk about. that won't stop them though
they do each others nails
Piper helped Leo pierce his ears a second and third time (he already had one for fun)
if Leo has extra metal from whatever project he's working on he makes Piper Earrings
Piper makes sure Leo wears his retainer (he forgets a lot)
they see each other as their sibling. and treat each other as such
Honestly, the most egregious and obvious way that RR favored and inserted Percy and Annabeth as the main characters in Hoo is having them be the ones whose blood woke Gaea.
He wanted to have them be the most important demigods of the seven. If they were facing Kronos or some other enemy from their past that could have made sense. But they weren’t and Gaea had no reason to prioritize these two, but she already made efforts for them to be the ones spared and brought to her in previous books in the series. She only wanted this because the narrative wanted P and A to be important.
But you know who Gaea does have significant history with? Who would have had serious emotional and thematic repercussions at waking her? Who were the two destined to bring her down?
Hazel and Leo.
jason thought he saw a glint of bronze, and stood up on the railing of the argo ii to get a better view. he saw the frame-work of a boat, except that it looked far more than just a boat: the machinery had a certain style to it, a certain edge that could only come from one person.
the realisation sucked the breath out of his lungs, and in his excitement, he made the foolish mistake of still holding loosely to the air reins as he willed the venti to run free. he was yanked along them for a split-second before he left go, which was more than enough to disrupt his balance on the thin railing he stood on: he fell forwards with a yelp, and hit his head pretty hard against the metal exterior of the ship before falling into a roll in the shallow ocean below him.
luckily the ship's motors had stopped, or else it would have probably swept him under. as it already was, when he got up and brushed the sand out of his face, his arm was bleeding. if he'd taken a second more to compose himself he would have realised that a bleeding cut had formed on the side of his head as well, staining his hair darker, and that he'd been controlling the venti for so long that the skin on his arms was blistered and cracked.
but even as he heard concerned voices from the ship, no doubt caused by his loud injury, he could see leo's silhouette. he didn't know how he recognised him from so far, when he could hardly see his features or his clothes: but he knew, with absolute certainty, it was him.
he didn't wait for anyone. he simply ran, not caring as thin shards of rock and glass embedded themselves in his bare feet, or as the rest of the seven called out his name from behind him. he ran so fast that his feet hardly touched the ground; that although he'd seen leo from at least half a kilometre away, he ran for less than sixty seconds before he could see him from up-close.
leo was standing up now, and his eyes were warm and dark, and his curls covered part of his left eyebrow as it always did, and he was smiling in a way that was softer and subtler than jason had seen before. and there was something about his outfit— but he didn't process what, because he'd practically leapt onto leo as soon as he was close, hugging the other boy.
he heard leo's voice, "hey, jace." he couldn't bring himself to respond in words. he just hugged leo tighter, a mixture of relief and something else clumping together until it formed an emotion so strong and simple that it could only be called joy.
when they finally broke away from the embrace, jason couldn't help the wide smile that formed on his face. "gods, i'm so glad to see you."
leo squeezed his shoulder, "man, i missed you too." then he grinned the way he always did before he dropped a joke. "but, seriously, you have no idea how much i could've used some flying—"
jason didn't know what got into him right then. he grabbed leo's face with his hands, and kissed him on the lips. looking back, he wouldn't know what surprised him more: the fact that he'd kissed leo, or the fact that leo had kissed him back.
and now he could finally hear the others coming, and they were calling his name and leo's, but he still couldn't make himself let go of leo. "your head's bleeding," leo murmured after finally pulling apart, and he smiled wider.
jason kissed him again, and this time everyone was there to watch but he found that he couldn't care less because he wanted to keep kissing leo until someone had to drag him away.
A Late Night Escapade
Times in the Wilderness
"Psst, Leo, hey," a soft voice whispered in his ear, making him sit up so fast that his forehead banged against something.
"Ow!" The voice hissed, mumbling something under its breath as it moved a few paces away, rubbing its forehead.
"Piper?" Leo squinted through the dark, trying to make out the shape standing in front of his bed.
"C'mon, up, up, up!" She ordered, and Leo found himself standing, even though his throbbing head and heavy eyes begged him not to.
"What are you doing? Where's Jason? It's-" He paused to look at the clock, "half past midnight!" He finished.
"I'll explain later, cmon, let's go."
"Wait but what about Jason?" He asked turning to look at the back of the blond boy sleeping on the bed next to him.
"I'll explain later," she repeated, and dragged him out into the hall.
He squinted at the sudden harsh light and stumbled after Piper, who was power-walking down the hallway in her purple PJs. She finally stopped in front of the kitchen door, and leaned in to whisper, "Keep watch."
"Wha- Piper!"
But she slipped the door shut and dissapeared.
It took seven minutes and forty two seconds and a moderate amount of crashing and swearing noises from inside before Piper came out again.
"What's that?" Leo asked, pointing at the cardboard box she was precariously carrying in her arms.
"I'll explain later," she repeated. Leo was getting really sick of those words.
"Can you at least tell me where you're going?"
"We. Where we're going," she said firmly, then, "to the attic."
Leo had found the attic one day when he was exploring (for spots to hide from bullies). It was where all the students' suitcases were kept, and students weren't allowed in, but kids snuck in from time to time. However, no one wandered far from the trapdoor. It was dark and dusty there- and people usually left as soon as they could. But the space ran over the entire school building, and was filled with many passages and small rooms- Leo was always finding new areas.
He'd finally found a large room a few months back, after crawling through two passages and climbing up holes, and he estimated that it was right above the cafeteria. The best part was, it had a tiny window. So of course he'd dragged Piper (Jason hadn't come yet) and made her clean the entire place with him. They'd hauled up a few yoga mats from the gym, and Leo had filled it up with odd machine parts- so many that Piper hardly came up anymore, and that was only to call him down or to sit in the corner for a while talking. It was very secret, and took six weeks of knowing Jason before he finally let him in.
"OK...is this a midnight food fest...?"
"Shh!"
Leo groaned quietly, feeling pissed. If she insisted on dragging him into his creepy attic at midnight with a suspicious box under her arm, he at least deserved to know what the heck was going on. Plus, Piper was acting weirdly out of character.
"Go up. I'll hand you the box once you're through. Be careful."
After a lot more swearing and shoving and shouts of "protect that box with your life, Leo!", plus a super fun bucketful of crawling and avoiding rat shit, they finally reached the room.
"Wait here." She grabbed the box from him with a hypocritical amount of violence.
"Wha- Piper- it's dark!" He protested as Piper went through the door, but the lamp she'd turned on in the room was casting a glow into the hallway, and he was never one to disobey the orders of people he actually cared about, so he waited. It wasn't so bad, really.
Well it wasn't...until the lamp went out.
The shadows seemed to elongate, and he couldn't hear Piper moving around inside anymore. He couldn't stop his mind flashing back to a long gone workshop. It was bigger, and didn't smell like decayed wood and rat droppings, but the similarities were surprisingly eerie.
"Piper?" He called as loudly as he dared, trying to block out his eight year old voice calling "Mom?" Into the creepy darkness. Maybe his voice had sounded more scared than he had wanted it to, but, he thought as Piper immediately came back through the door, he couldn't really make himself regret it.
"Oops, sorry, kiddo. Come on in." And she ducked back in through the door.
"God seriously, Piper? What is going ON with you?" He asked, following her into the dark room. "And 'kiddo'?"
But Piper had somehow dissapeared. Again.
Could there be a secret opening in here that he'd never noticed? Impossible. The mashed potatoes in the cafeteria probably had a virus planted in it by an alien from pluto that was making him hallucinate. He'd probably imagined Piper coming to his dorm. Heck maybe she'd never been real to begin with. Maybe Jason wasn't real either. Or wait- maybe HE was the alien. He should've known no one could be that nice in real life.
"What's he doing?"
"Is he in shock?"
"Maybe the ADHD-"
"In three, two-"
"Wait not yet."
"Hurry. He'll snap out of it soon."
"OK, done."
Leo barely had time to register the not-very-subtle whispers before everything turned ridiculously bright. Well not too bright to cause a sensory overload, but still. Bright.
"Wait what I haven't-"
"SUPRISE!" Piper burst out from behind a table and pushed a party hat onto his head, effectively giving him a minor heart attack.
"Happy Birthday?" Jason half yelled, half asked, as he emerged too, frantically trying to fix his lopsided hat.
"Wait what?"
"It's your birthday and you didn't even TELL us!? Really Leo!? If I hadn't seen that file in the principal's office-" Piper started, still having that huge grin fixed on her face.
"You're turning 15! We thought you were our age, Leo! Anyway, you like the decorations? You guys turned up sooner than I expected so it's a bit...well, you know...sorry..."
"Oh, oh, that's, um-" he fumbled for words, feeling tears blur his vision. It was his birthday today? He hadn't even noticed! And they'd- they'd- they'd decorated! And bought party hats! "Ta-da!" Piper threw open the cake box, grinning wildly as Leo took in the simple chocolate cake decorated with oreos, whipped cream, and a lot of randomly placed pieces of chocolate by a clearly inexperienced hand.
He felt a few tears slide down his cheeks.
"Piper- Piper I think he's crying. Dude, are you crying?" Jason asked, starting to sound panicked.
"Huh?"
"I'm so-rr-yyy," he sniffled, "I'm being such a party pooper." He rubbed at his snotty nose and gave a sloppy laugh.
His friends seem to grab onto it like drowning sailors clinging to a buoy. Piper started laughing, and was nervously followed by Jason.
"This is, this is so-"
"Oh my god please don't tell me you hate it."
"No! No! Oh my god this is the sweetest thing anyone's ever done for me! I love you guys so muchhh" He was crying in earnest now, and someone had helped him sit down in a chair.
"Aw, we love you too!" Piper assured him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug.
Jason knelt down next to them a gave him a one armed squeeze. "You're amazing. You deserve it, seriously, man."
"Man? Dude he's 15! He's just a baby!"
"Wow ok-" Leo started to wipe away his tears.
"Cut the cake! Cut the cake!" They chanted eagerly, and he noticed that they'd avoided lighting a candle. He wasn't sure if it was because they'd remembered his fire-phobia, or because they had a spark of common sense that made them realise that the attic would probably catch flames and burn down the entire school, but he was glad. No fire would ruin tonight.
Nothing would ruin tonight. He was happy here, surrounded and protected by the only people he loved and the only people who loved him back.
Everything was perfect.
"C'mon, make a wish!"
There wasn't a candle, but Leo still closed his eyes, and he wished that his nightmares were a lie, that nothing he'd seen would ever actually happen and hurt his friends, and he wished-
"You're talking a huge while to make that wish, kid. Just one, remember?"
He wished that everything would stay exactly the same.
I Got a Bad Case of Loving You
Hey, it's a chiropractor AU! In which everyone is a little inappropriate, tbh.
Written for @writers-choice prompt "kink in neck". I spent some time agonizing over whether I could come up with anything for this prompt and then came up with two things, because I am a giant nerd. Title is from the song Bad Case of Loving You by Robert Palmer.
___
“I’m telling you Nico, you’ve got to go see my back guy! He’s dirt cheap.”
Nico makes a face. “I don’t know, Leo. Isn’t it like… healthcare? It seems like ‘dirt cheap’ shouldn’t be a selling point for healthcare.”
“Look.” Leo bounces onto the couch beside his roommate and Nico winces, lifting a hand to his sore neck. “You’ve been in pain for a week. What are your other options?”
“This guy is a chiropractor?” Nico asks reluctantly.
Leo looks unsure. “I mean yeah, basically.”
“Basically?”
“Whatever.” Leo throws up his hands. “He’s never steered me wrong. He fixed me up after I fell off Jason’s balcony.”
Nico looks at him in horror. “You fell two stories. Shouldn’t you have gone to a hospital?”
“This guy is cheaper,” Leo says, as if this is all the explanation that is necessary.
Nico blinks. Leo hasn’t stopped bouncing on the couch and it hurts.
“Okay, fine. I’ll think about it, okay?” Nico gingerly lifts his arm to look at his watch. “Don’t you have to go to class?”
Leo’s expression abruptly turns to one of horror. “Fuck.”
Moments later he’s out the door and Nico walks stiffly to the hall closet, wondering if they own a heating pad. ___
A few days later, still unable to properly lift his arm or turn his head to the left, Nico is ready to admit defeat and ask Leo for Dr. Apollo’s number. Leo seems unreasonably thrilled. “You’ll be thanking me, just wait!” he crows. Nico makes a face, but calls the number anyway.
The place is just down the block from their apartment, so that’s a plus. The appearance of the office, on the other hand, is… not reassuring. The tiny, dimly-lit reception area is cluttered with salt lamps and crystals and various knick-knacks. The front room is deserted when Nico arrives, and he sits down hesitantly on a wicker chair, glancing anxiously towards a beaded curtain separating the waiting area from the rest of the clinic. The room smells like a tarot card reading place Piper once made him go to with her.
Nico half-considers turning and walking right back out the door, but he’s living on the last vestiges of his student loans and he’s tired of not being able to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Besides, Leo’s been to see this dude before, and he’s still standing.
“Mr. di Angelo?” comes a melodious voice from behind the beaded curtain, and Nico jumps.
“I’m Dr. Apollo, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” the man says smoothly, pushing the beads aside and crossing the small waiting room. He holds out his hand and Nico cautiously shakes it. Dr. Apollo is… a bit blinding. His teeth are positively gleaming, his shirt unbuttoned just a little too far to be considered professional. He has a deep, almost bronze tan and bleached blonde hair.
But Nico rises and follows the man into a back room that’s decorated much like the waiting room, candles flickering on every surface, incense smoke curling towards the ceiling.
“What seems to be the problem?”
Nico tells him, but has the distinct impression that Dr. Apollo is only half-listening, waiting for his next chance to speak.
He’s not entirely wrong. Once Nico is situated on the exam table, the - doctor? - Nico honestly isn’t positive - makes a show of turning on soft music and lighting several more candles, all the while speaking in a soothing tone. But whatever tranquil effect might have been achieved is mostly ruined by the way Dr. Apollo spends the entire (blessedly short) appointment dropping names of supposed celebrities he's treated, none of whom Nico’s ever heard of.
Despite his manner, though, and the seemingly unnecessary flourishes of his hands as he works, Dr. Apollo does seem to know what he’s doing, and Nico’s neck feels better almost immediately. So he supposes it’s worth all the weirdness.
“Aha!” Dr. Apollo announces, teeth gleaming, as Nico’s neck makes a muted popping sound. “That’s it, isn’t it?”
“Um, yeah,” Nico agrees, carefully tilting his head. “That does feel a lot better.”
“Every single time! Tell your friends!” Dr. Apollo beams. Then, “William!” he calls in a carrying voice, turning to the side, “I’m ready for you!”
Dr. Apollo leans slightly forward as he’s preparing to stand, taking a deep inhale.
“Mmm. Has anyone ever told you that your hair smells of petrichor? It’s enchanting.”
Nico blinks.
“Dad!” a voice squeaks in horror.
“What? What did I do?”
“Dad you can’t just - excuse us for just a moment, Mr di Angelo,” says the other voice. Positioned as he is, Nico can’t see the other speaker. The door closes softly and Nico can hear a whispered, heated conversation in the hallway. He only catches bits and pieces of it, but he’s pretty sure he hears can’t just go around smelling people’s hair, grossly unethical and completely inappropriate.
A moment later the door opens again. “I’m so, so sorry about him,” says a young man’s voice. “Obviously I need to have another chat with him about his people skills.”
This voice is softer than Dr. Apollo’s, harassed-sounding at the moment, but sunny and gentle, and Nico turns his head to see a boy about his age, freckled with tousled blonde hair, his face flushed red.
“It’s - it’s okay,” Nico reassures him.
“It’s really not,” the boy says, pinching the bridge of his nose and taking a deep breath. “One of these days someone’s going to sue him, or call the cops or -” he shakes his head. “Anyway. I’m supposed to put some heat on your neck before you’re done. Is that okay?”
“Yeah, sure.”
Nico watches the boy as he moves across the small exam room to a stainless steel cabinet, removing a heat pack and wrapping it expertly in a towel. Knowing that he’s related to Dr. Apollo, Nico can see the resemblance. The boy is like a diluted version of his father, but in the best possible way, his manner mild and unobtrusive, his sandy blonde hair curling softly at the back of his neck. When he turns back to Nico, his smile is like warm light on a soft spring evening. Enchanting Nico thinks, then internally scolds himself. Talk about being completely inappropriate.
The boy approaches the table with the heat pack. “If you can just lift your head a bit, I can put this under your neck.”
Nico does, definitely not making a note of how soft the boy’s fingers are when they accidentally brush his cheek, nor how good he smells.
“Again, I’m so sorry about my dad,” the boy says.
“It’s fine,” Nico shrugs. “The price is right.”
“Yeah, I know,” the boy grimaces. “We moved here from Greece when I was a kid. He was a chiropractor over there, but he never got re-certified in the US. Maybe because of his appalling bedside manner,” he finishes in a loud voice directed towards the hallway.
A door slams in the distance. The boy shakes his head. He turns to set a timer.
The heat on Nico’s neck is actually really nice. Especially now that he’s abruptly free of the pain that’s been trailing him around for almost two weeks. Nico finds his eyes drifting closed.
“Um - Mr. di Angelo?” Nico blinks his eyes open. The boy is standing next to the exam table, closer than Nico expected.
“Oh, it’s - it’s Nico.” Nico holds out his hand.
The boy gives him that soft smile again and god, maybe it's because of the comforting heat on his tired neck or the incense in the air, but Nico's stomach does a pleasant little flip.
“Will,” the boy says, shaking Nico’s hand.
“Will… Apollo?”
“Oh. No.” The boy’s face goes a bit pink. “Will Solace.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“You too.”
They gaze at each other for a moment during which Nico is quite sure that Will Solace’s face goes even pinker. Then he abruptly turns his gaze to his feet.
“Um. You’ve got about ten minutes left,” he glances at the timer. “I’m just going to sit over there and… avoid my dad for a few minutes. Please just rest - feel free to ignore me.” And Will turns to sit at the small desk in the corner, reaching for a textbook.
Ignoring this boy is pretty much the last thing on Nico’s mind, though.
“You’re not a chiropractor?” Nico asks after a moment.
The boy turns in his chair, open textbook on his lap. “God, no. I’m pre-med. My dad was short-staffed today and he talked me into helping out.”
“He’s… interesting,” Nico says.
Will snorts. “Yeah, that’s one word for it. I um… I didn’t grow up with him around. We’re not really close… I don’t know. We have kind of a weird relationship.”
Nico nods. “I can relate. My stepmom is okay, but my dad… well. That’s not a ten-minute conversation.”
Will smiles, setting his book on the desk behind him and closing it.
“Are you a student too?”
“Yeah. Forensic pathology.”
Will’s eyes light up, which isn’t the reaction Nico’s accustomed to when he talks about his choice of career.
“That’s so cool!” Will exclaims. “I thought about forensic pathology too. I’m still not sure about my major, to be honest. I bet we’ve taken some of the same classes, though!”
After that, the conversation flows easily, and the ten minutes pass by far too quickly.
“How are you feeling?” Will asks as Nico pushes himself up. He turns his head experimentally.
“Really good, actually. I guess your dad knows his stuff,” Nico says.
“Lucky for him.” Will rolls his eyes.
Nico hops down from the table, and maybe he’d gotten a little too comfortable there, because his vision goes dark for a second as his feet hit the floor, and he stumbles.
“Whoa there,” Will says, grabbing his arm, and when Nico’s vision does clear, it’s to the sight of wide, blue, blue eyes searching his face. It doesn’t particularly help the dizziness.
“Are you okay? You look a little stunned.” Will says, his brow furrowed.
“Yeah, just…” Nico shakes his head. “Um. Orthostatic… um…”
“Hypotension?” Will grins.
“Yeah, that,” Nico breathes. And somehow Will’s hand is still on his arm, and the candlelight is turning his hair the most gorgeous shade of gold, and Nico can’t look away from those blue, blue eyes, and -
The door suddenly swings open and the two jump apart.
“Mr. di Angelo!” Dr. Apollo exclaims. “How’s the neck?”
“Yeah - um. Good,” Nico stammers, attempting to regain the powers of speech.
“Wonderful!”
Will trails behind them as Dr. Apollo leads Nico back to the front desk.
Nico pays for his treatment, stealing another glance at Dr. Apollo’s beautiful assistant out of the corner of his eye. Dr. Apollo gives Nico his receipt and several of his business cards. Then -
“Oh!” the older man exclaims, glancing at Nico’s file. “You live right down the street! My son’s band is playing at the cafe next door tomorrow night!” He grabs Will around the shoulders and pulls him in. “You should come!”
Will looks mortified. “Dad, please don’t. I’m sure Nico has better things to do on a Friday night.”
But Nico’s heart gives a little leap. “No, actually that - that sounds great,” he says, and he’s pretty sure Will looks pleased. He can probably convince Leo to come along so he doesn’t have to sit there feeling completely awkward on his own.
“Wonderful!” Dr. Apollo exclaims. And then he’s immediately distracted by another patient coming in through the door. There’s barely enough room for the four of them in the waiting room, so Nico makes a hasty exit. He’s standing in front of the little shop tucking his receipt into his backpack when the door opens behind him.
“Hey,” Will says shyly. “I um - I just wanted to apologize for my dad again, and - here.” He hands Nico a photocopied green flier. “That’s for the show tomorrow,” he explains. “You totally don’t have to come, but -”
“No,” Nico shakes his head. “I’ll be there.”
Will’s flushes. “Okay. Cool. Then I’ll - I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow,” Nico grins.
And as Nico watches Will retreat back into the shop, he thinks he might just have more than one thing to thank Leo for.
You swayed back and forth to the boom boom boom beat of the music, sipping the raw, bitter alcohol. Travis's party was just what you needed: shots, random boys you didn't care about to grind on and distract yourself with, getting blackout drunk, and basically anything to make you get your mind off of him.
Just thinking about his name made you want to vomit. You were reminded of walking in on him with that other, terrible, Nemesis girl, the half-assed breakup, never getting closure, and endless nights of sobbing and feeling sorry for yourself. Two weeks later, and his words were fresh in your mind like a fresh cut he had just re-opened yesterday. You drank more, feeling dizzy, praying the alcohol would numb your brain.
Fuck him, anyway. You'd show him you could do better.
"Woah, calm down," a random boy said, approaching you. The darkness and flashing lights of the cabin made it hard to see his face, so you could barely make out his gleaming brown eyes and sepia skin. "You might wanna be careful with that much alcohol."
"You don't know what's best for me," you snapped, your words slurring. The bass pumped in your ears, making your head feel like it was going to explode.
To your surprise, the boy laughed rather than acting offended. "Okay, I guess you're right. I shouldn't be talking, anyway. I just finished shotgunning this beer,” he answered, showing you his tattered-up Natty Lite can.
Lightheaded and unphased, you allowed yourself to plop on the tattered sofa, the boy crashing next to you. His breath smelled of beer and straight tequila, and you only imagined that yours did too.
"Why?" you asked, inching close to him. His hand rested on his thigh, barely grazing yours under your ripped denim shorts.
"Why what?"
"Why do you drink? I mean, we all drink for a reason. We're either mad at someone else, or ourselves."
He paused, tapping his leg.
When you got drunk, you got angry and philosophical. Mad at the world, hyperaware of everything wrong with everyone, the reason why many people couldn't handle you drunk. The reason you usually drank alone.
The boy leaned back, resting his head against the seat. "I'm lonely. I'm fucking tired of being the seventh wheel, and always feeling like everyone's life is better than mine."
"Hey, I'm lonely too."
"You?" he asked. "Once everyone heard you were single again, they all wanted to get with you. Thought you would even be taken by now."
You scowled. You hated your reputation at camp: the pretty girl who everyone thought they could take advantage of just because she was from Aphrodite. You were tired of being treated like a sex object, especially by your ex, and you wanted to prove them all wrong. "That's exactly the point. All anyone ever wants me for is my body. But apparently even that wasn't good enough for... him."
The boy paused, almost looking sorrowful, and like he regretted saying anything. What was that look he was giving you? Pity?
"He cheated? I'm sorry... That's rough."
"Yeah, but it's whatever. That's why I drink, anyway," you said, gulping down more of a Coors bottle someone handed you. He looked concerned.
"You and me, we're opposites. I have to rely on my personality to get me anywhere. All my friends have amazing good looks to rely on.  I have to work for that shit, to even be slightly noticed."
The strobe light shined on him, and you could see his features more clearly this time. Unsure of whether it was you or the alcohol speaking, you noticed his chocolate brown hair, beautiful curls you wanted to pull.
Most guys repulsed you, especially after the breakup. You wanted them to get their hands off of you, because no one felt right the way your ex did. But every move this boy made, every hungry look he gave you, all of that just made you want him more. He made you feel different.
"Then we would fit together perfectly," you said, inching towards him.
He moved his hand to your thigh, rubbing your leg with his thumb. The lights dimmed as the party entered its peak, and the sexual tension between you two increased.
The boy inched oh-so-slightly to the left so that his hot breath was on your ear, close enough to bite it. "Maybe we would."
Agonizingly slowly, he put one hand on your waist and used another to cup your face. You stared into his eyes, mesmerized by his gaze, your ears and head buzzing from the alcohol. Finally, you both shared a drunken kiss. You didn't even think about what you were doing.
He gripped your waist, and you climbed on his lap. He bit your lip, then sloppily put his tongue in your mouth, not bothering to ask for permission to enter. You kissed back, your tongues swirling together, making out like you were running out of time, running away from the world, running away from your ex, running to each other.
Once you slowly started grinding on him, he pulled away and whispered in your ear. "Let's take this to a room."
Once you got to an empty room, the boy twirled you around and pressed me against the wall. He tightened his arms around your waist, and you wrapped your arms around his neck, having to stand on your tiptoes. You pressed your body as close to his as possible, sticking your knee in between his legs for extra friction.
"Jump," he growled.
You did as you was told and jumped up so you were face to face, straddling him. He connected his lips with yours and squeezed your ass as he held you, making you moan into the kiss.
You urgently ran your fingers through his hair, feeling his curly locks. You grinded into him, and he moaned into your mouth.
He set you down and pushed you onto the bed, never letting your lips disconnect.
One you were on the bed, him towering over you and shoving his tongue in your mouth, he finally put his hands under your shirt, feeling and squeezing your tits. He grinded his member against you, and you shivered in delight, running your fingers over his well defined muscles.
He started trailing kisses down to your neck, trying to find your sweet spot. Once he did, you let out a loud moan which you had been holding in, which of course only encouraged him to suck harder. Once he was done covering your neck in red spots, he pulled back, giving you that lopsided grin, then he finally hungrily kissed you again.
Whatever you felt- buzzed because of the alcohol, eager to get a rebound to prove your ex wrong, or solely just sexual attraction, you knew it felt right.
He was taking off your shirt after already discarding his on the floor when you stopped him.
"Wait," you panted. "I don't even know your name."
"Leo. Leo Valdez," he responded, and as he did, you watched his lips, wishing they were back on yours. "You?"
"Y/N L/N."
Leo trailed kisses down your chest, seductivley looking up at you with hungry eyes.
"Y/N L/N, you are a monster from hell."
One-Shot: The Right Thing
Apollo gets separated from Leo and Calypso on his way to Indianapolis.
Apollo stumbled through the cold, dark, damp streets of Columbus, Ohio, his ragged breathing the only sound disrupting the empty alley. It echoed off the wall, amplifying his anxiety, making his heart pound all the harder. Which made his breath harder, which made the echoes worse, which made his anxiety worse, which made his heart pound harder. And so the wheel turned.
And so he was back in a stinking alley.
Studying no longer means student dying---Leo Valdez x Tutor!reader [making out. a lot]
»»————- ★ ————-««
You sipped your apple juice and set the cup down, watching Leo continue to rest his forehead on the textbooks spread out in front of you on the cold concrete floor that you were sprawled across to fight the summer heat. “Are you just gonna go to sleep, or?”
“Why,” he said with a voice that was definitely smirking. It made your stomach feel funny. “You tryna get into my-”
“No, I’m trying to get into your mum’s wallet, actually,” you shot back, and finished your drink, the ice clinking around the bottom of the glass. You knew you’d won the argument and just waited for Leo to remember that he actually needed to pay attention if he wanted to not fail his class instead of bugging him.
The flock of birds in the sky around your balcony both squawked and swooped at each other, acting a lot like you both this late afternoon as Leo tried to put off studying for as long as he could and you made a new playlist as he groaned and flopped about on the pillows you’d brought in from the couch.
You were glad you weren’t the one having to concentrate because you didn’t think you’d be able to if Leo insisted on sitting there in the light of golden hour.
“All you have to do is read this one act, and then answer a few of the questions your teacher set. Then you’re done, okay?” You said a few minutes later when Leo hadn’t moved. “It’ll take twenty minutes at most. Besides, you’re a genius.”
Leo sat up with eyes squinted against the bright and then glared at the dog eared energy drink stained paperback sitting on the piles of worksheets and your laptops.
You glanced at the streaks beneath his eyes and then down to his hands. He had very pretty hands, only his finger-nails had been bitten down til the skin around them was red and torn. You wanted to reach out and squeeze his hand, but you just tried for a comforting smile, “you really don’t want to do this, do you?”
“It’s not that I don’t want to, I just can’t…” Leo said, staring out at the powerlines and tops of trees in front of him. He grinned and waved a hand, “anyways, I’ve got a much better id-”
“If this is another sex joke I’m pushing you off the balcony,” you said bluntly, and then let your tone soften. “Don’t just change the subject, because you can’t change your subjects. You have to do this.”
“I know!” Leo burst, his voice breaking, and then pulled his knees to his chest and screwed up his eyes, arms around his legs. “I- I’m sorry. That was loud.”
You gave him a moment to slow down his breathing and rub his face tiredly before you spoke. “If you can tell me, why do you think you can’t read?”
“I can do it, like, I’m not dumb.” he said defensively, and turned away a little, his chin on knee. “But it’s so hard to just start reading when I know that it’ll take me ages and give me a headache and I won’t get what they’re saying anyway. It’s stupid-”
You reached out and grabbed his hand at that last part, watching him whip around with a red face. “You’re not dumb, or stupid. And, Leo, not everyone’s good at everything. You’re just so math-y that you need a weakness. And it’s not your fault your brain is doing that self preservation thing, it knows that you’ll hate what you’re about to do, so it’s trying to protect you.”
Leo sniffled and nodded quickly, his little grin hidden by his arm as he hunched over. You squeezed his hand. “Don’t be mean to your brain when it’s just trying to look after you.”
“Okay… okay.” he said, and sat up, face red while he grinned harder. The sun glowed behind him like a halo and made his dark curls light up. “...Thanks.”
“All good,” you said, pretending not to notice how he didn’t stop clutching your hand. It made your chest light so you smiled at him. “Now, how about I read one character and you read the other?”
»»————- ★ ————-««
“I brought Starbucks!”
You looked up from your laptop and pulled your headphones out of your ears, the white cords tangling round your fingers as you stuffed them into your pocket. “Hey Valdez.”
“Hey yourself,” Leo said, doing that thing with his face where he tried not to smile. It was endearing, but his smile itself was just as cute. He put the drinks down on the ground next to you and collapsed onto the cushion he’d claimed, digging through his bulky backpack full of robotics club things and pulled out a few pieces of paper stapled together. He was waving it far too happily for you to read anything so you waited for him to burst. “I got a C!”
“No way,” you breathed, and then leapt up and grabbed the paper. It was his essay response you’d helped him study for last week. He got a C. “No way! Dude, that’s amazing!”
“Who knew I could be so good at English,” he smirked, hands in the pockets of his green army jacket. Then he let out a little yelp when you pulled him into a tight hug that smelt like machinery grease and incense and his laundry detergent.
You sat back down and let him pull out his things a minute later, sipping the drink he’d brought over once your fridge had started to complain about its empty shelves. You couldn’t help that snacks were just great for studying. And the chocolate wafers seemed to motivate Leo greatly.
“I thought your English teacher hated you,” you said, not really knowing how that situation had gone down. You didn’t know any of his teachers really, except the principal that had contacted you first, after you’d done tutoring for a few of her other students.
You went to the school a few blocks from Leo’s, but you’d gone to primary school together and only lived a street apart. Teachers preferred tutors from other schools, because then they knew that their students weren’t just copying each-others work. It wasn’t a very full proof plan, but you hadn’t complained when Leo had shown up with a bag over his shoulder and equally as large ones under his eyes.
It’d been a semester and they were still there, but when he grinned at you, it wasn’t fake.
He waved his hand away, “nah, she got fired cause she started selling weed to the year twelves before their exams or something, I dunno. I got a new one, Mr Blofis, he’s kinda weird, but he’s nice. And he brings swords in sometimes.”
“Why didn’t we think of that before?” you scoffed sarcastically, moving your books away as Leo dumped a binder as thick as the dictionary in front of you both. “I should’ve brought weapons to help you concentrate.”
“Shuddup,” Leo muttered, picking up his drink that he probably shouldn’t have considering how much caffeine was in there, but he started sculling it anyway, and handed over the new book his class was studying.
»»————- ★ ————-««
Leo glared at you.
It wasn’t a look you were used to, so you lowered your laptop screen and raised your eyebrows. “Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
He fumed in the doorway leading to the balcony you’d spent endless hours on together, his shoulders bunched up and his bulky backpack slipping from his grip. Then he stormed forwards and held out a sheet of paper in your face, “I found this, today.”
“Huh?” You asked, sitting up and taking the form from him, assuming he’d failed an assignment, but then he’d be mad at himself, not you. You’d hug him and he’d complain about teachers for a little bit then you’d go inside and play Mario Kart and eat chocolate wafers that would get stuck in his teeth.
Your eyes widened as you scanned the document. “...Right.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?!” Leo snapped, “I’ve been wasting your afternoons for ages when my tutoring was over months ago!”
You looked down at your socks and wrung your hands together while you tried to think of what to say. It was true, though. Leo’s mum had stopped paying and the school had stopped sending emails, but apparently no one had told Leo that. Including you. He stood above you, shaking with anger.
Leo screwed his face up, “I’m not a charity case, I don’t need you to lie to me about-”
“You were never a charity case, Leo,” you interrupted before he went on a misplaced tangent as he tended to do. Then you rolled your eyes kindly. “And you never wasted my afternoons.”
“But-”
“It was selfish,” you said bluntly, and tried for a smile. “I just really like you.”
Leo’s shoulders sank, and he blinked stupidly. “Huh?”
“I pretended you had to come over longer than you needed to so I could keep hanging out with you, but I get that I was just forcing you to do schoolwork, it was mean.” You understood that he was going to leave now, he had no fake reasons to stay and lay his legs over your lap and make stupid jokes until dinner time.
At least he’d know he was never a charity case. “You’re getting C’s and B’s in all of you essays now, and you’ve got that grammar checker too, so the school ended the contract.”
He didn’t say anything. You sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“You really like me?”
 “That’s what you got from that?” You raised an eyebrow. Then you patted the cushion next to you and Leo plopped onto it immediately, eyes wide. Then you squinted at him. “What were you even upset about? At the end of the day, you were getting free tutoring anyway.”
Leo shrugged, “I’m sure there was a reason.”
“You’ve forgotten, haven't you.”
“But you like me?”
“You get very fixated, don’t you?” You smiled, and turned to afternoon sun fading over the powerlines and birds flitting around. Then you opened your arm over his shoulder and hugged him. “Course I like you, Valdez. Even if you eat all my food.”
“Not my fault you’ve got good food.”
He was incredibly close. It made you face heat up because his hair was tickling your shoulder and his fingers tapped randomly on the space between you. Maybe it’d been selfish to not tell him, but god, it was sort of worth getting to see him a few times during the week.
Leo was just so pretty.
He glanced at you, “what?”
“Nothing,” you answered quickly, looking away from the little spatter of freckles across his nose and the warmth of his eyes.
Then he poked your side with a curious grin, “what?”
“Nothing!” you shot back, wiggling away from his nimble fingers that tried to tickle you as he laughed. You kicked at his legs gently to scramble back through the pillows, laughing as you did so. “Hey!”
Leo slipped and made an odd yelping sound, then he managed to crash into you.
You rubbed your face, chuckling, at his clumsiness. You sat up. Leo stared up at you with a red face, his shaky arms holding himself up on either side of you. He gulped, eyes moving between yours quickly.
It was at this point that you both should’ve pulled away and laughed, going back to finding snacks and laughing over nothing, but then that window passed and Leo was turner redder by the second. His eyes moved away from your eyes slowly, and you reached to slide your fingers next to his slowly.
Leo’s chest rose and fell quickly. “I, uh… I really like you too.”
“I’m going to kiss you now, if that’s-”
“Yes!”
You paused for a moment as his eyes crinkled and he grinned, ducking his head. Then you lifted his chin up a little bit and you watched his pupils visibly expand.
“God, you’re so-” You cut yourself off, using his soft cracked lips to do so. The first thing you registered was Leo’s hands moving closer to you instantly and the way your eyes fluttered shut without warning.
You pressed your lips to his harder and pulled back, breathless. He blinked up at you, eyes wide, and you reached out to pull him closer again, your fingers sliding along his jaw and holding his face. He scooted closer, kneeling between your legs and clutching the belt loops of your jeans while you pressed kiss after kiss to his lips.
He tilted his head and you gave him a second before you opened your mouth against his, realizing that you really were kissing the boy you’d been daydreaming about for months. Holy shit. It was better than you’d imagined, the way his breath fanned out over you when he kissed your open mouth back, tasting like strawberry gum and softness.
When you took another breath, stealing a glance at Leo’s puffy lips and red face, but he pulled you back into the embrace, your shirt balled up in his fist.
Teeth clashed together. You jerked back at the awful feeling and began to laugh, wiping at your mouth. “Oh my god.”
“Oh my god,” Leo choked, blinking rapidly. He looked around and a grin spread across his face. He was panting. “I’d be getting A’s if you kissed me instead of yelled, y’know.”
“I beg to differ,” you said, letting go of his jaw. Your fingernails had left little dints in his cheeks, but he didn’t look like he cared at all. You rested your hands on his waist and smirked. “I think you’d fail all your classes.”
“True,” he squeaked, breath catching.
You narrowed your eyes at him and slowly moved your hands up a little bit, fingers tracing his sides cautiously.
You’d asked to kiss him, not pull weird sounds out of his throat and have him bury his head in your neck, but that’s what happened. As your fingers caught on the edge of his shirt, you whispered quietly to him. “Is this okay?”
Leo just nodded frantically, his hot breath landing on the patch of skin where your neck and shoulder met. When your fingers touched his warm skin he grinned, his mouth brushing you. You felt the shiver that ran up him under the pads of your fingers, and you decided you liked it.
He pressed his face tightly against you, hands curling around the back of your collar.
Your chest tightened at the feeling of his lips and you dug your nails into the squishy part of Leo’s hips. It was a bad habit but it got you a firm kiss on your neck, even if it was accidental.
Leo pulled back enough for him to look up at you, cheeks dusted with pink and lips puffy. He smiled the tiniest bit, but you could see a question in it and you answered by moving your hands to his back, rubbing circles.
It was only at this point did you realize that he had sharp teeth, but as he chewed at your skin softly and licked it afterwards like an apology, you weren’t complaining.
Neither was Leo, obviously. He left sore spots and his hair brushed your ear. His teeth picked you apart. You felt like rubber under his warm hands and wide grin, but then your hands traced his ribs because he’d begun sucking on a tender spot beneath your jaw.
He insisted on leaving bruises you would have to cover up later. Maybe he’d take it as a challenge. Hopefully.
He pecked kisses along your kissed out skin until he reached your lips again.
