part ten: shadowed skies.
Martyn meets the survivors.
We made it to the end of part one! part two is where stuff really kicks in, and I hope you'll enjoy what my friend and I have been cooking, the following arc really is somethin' special <3
The world was dark.
The temperature was freezing, yet Martyn felt no cold wind.
He couldn’t feel anything at all except for the chill that encapsulated his whole body. He opened his eyes.
The sea prince was in front of him.
It still had that intent stare, its eyes locked on Martyn as it tilted its head, as if trying to understand the human in front of it. Martyn’s head told him to flee, but he remained frozen, locked in the staring contest. His fingers twitched, but he couldn’t move any more than that.
Somehow, it felt oddly calming.
The sea prince’s eyes glowed in the abyssal ocean, shining a spotlight on Martyn as a low rumble escaped its throat. The very water shook as the creature swam closer, and soon enough its face filled his entire vision as Martyn’s heart pounded out of his chest.
He wanted to scream, but no sound escaped him.
The sea prince opened its mouth, the light from its eyes revealed the row of sharp, man-eating teeth as it spoke.
“MARTYN…”
How did it know his name?
Its voice was both familiar and unfamiliar. He wasn’t sure why.
It formed a sinister grin on its face. Martyn saw his reflection on the monster’s teeth as it loomed above him.
Martyn could only widen his eyes in horror as the demon opened its mouth and shut it around him, trapping him in the warm darkness as it swallowed.
—————
Martyn screamed.
He jolted up, holding one of his hands to his chest as he gripped his shirt. It was dry. He was dry. He focused on his breathing.
He wasn’t in the water.
He looked around the room. It was dark, but the walls were dimly lit by warm lantern light and candlefire flickers, the windows filtered the starry night sky into the room. Martyn felt the slight tremble of the ship as it passed through the ocean, sounds of the water lapping against the wood and metal walls as the familiar smell of salt filled his lungs. Martyn narrowed his eyes, seeing the wooden cabinets with glass doors that held bottles and bandages, and the counters strewn with all sorts of medical equipment and tools. The operating table lay in the center of the room, thankfully not freshly used. There were a few empty beds near his sides, and four chairs that faced his bed.
Ah, he was in the sick bay.
Martyn turned his head to the door as he heard the sounds of footsteps. He sighed and smiled as he saw Lizzie enter, holding a small lantern. She hung it on a nearby hook and approached him.
“I see you’re awake,” Lizzie sat on one of the empty chairs. She tilted her head, “I heard the scream. Are you alright?”
Martyn sighed. “I’m alive, at least,” he glanced at the porthole window and narrowed his eyes. “What time is it?”
“Late,” Lizzie shrugged, covering her mouth as she yawned. Martyn must’ve woken her up. “The others are taking shifts outside, the Kites don’t seem keen on going to sleep.”
“The Kites?”
“The survivors. They’re… a lot to handle, but after you passed out and with the amount of damage on the ship, we’re heading to the nearest island.” Lizzie smiled, Martyn could see the fatigue on her face.
Must be another hunting crew, then.
But what were they doing near the border? Martyn had assumed people avoided the area. There were all sorts of stories and ideas that came out of it, ones that scared people enough to never want to sail even remotely near it, but this crew had seemingly been sailing this area on purpose. He remembered they didn’t even want the Canaries' help at all, even after their ship was destroyed. What was up with that?
“That makes sense.” Martyn scratched his head.
He looked at the ground. He wouldn’t have passed out if he had listened to Grian. If he wasn’t so impulsive, maybe they could’ve taken on that sea prince. Maybe Martyn wasn’t sure what would’ve happened if they did fight that sea prince. That oddly pretty, elusive sea prince.
“I’m sorry for acting up.”
Lizzie sighed, shaking her head. “Don’t apologize to me. I wasn’t there,” she glanced at the doorway, “Grian’s outside, but I don’t know if he’s up to talking yet.”
Martyn bit his lip. He didn’t know how to address it to Grian. Would Grian be mad at him? Upset? He didn’t know the extent of Grian’s feelings, especially after he’d said Jimmy’s name in his outburst. Martyn stayed quiet, and the two looked away from each other as the night breeze flowed into the room, an uneasy chill wafted over them.
Lizzie finally stood up, giving Martyn a small smile as she began to walk out of the room, “Just get some rest for now, okay? It’s a first for anyone to see you like that. Must have shaken you up bad, whatever it was….” She held the door frame and hesitated, her eyebrows furrowed. Martyn could see the concern on her face. “I will,” Martyn nodded. He couldn’t remember acting like that towards the others before. The thought of being vulnerable was weird. He had to be strong. He needed to be. He should– He would be fine after some rest. He smiled back, “Goodnight, Lizzie.”
“Goodnight, Martyn.”
Martyn laid back on the bed, pulling up his blanket as he tried to rest for the night. He slowed his breathing and closed his eyes. He wanted to rest, but he could feel the sea prince’s presence as if it was still there. He could hear its thundering heartbeat, still feel the chill against his body, and he could see the way it looked at him.
It didn’t eat you.
Yet Martyn could still imagine his reflection on the monster’s fang. It was incredibly large, but Martyn felt an ease of calmness and stillness from it. There was some grace in its movement Martyn couldn’t figure out. He didn’t want to.
He shook his head. Stop thinking about it. Just stop thinking about it. You need sleep.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
When he shut his eyes, he hoped for a dreamless sleep.
—————
The sounds of sea birds calling to sunrise woke Martyn up. He rubbed his eyes and ran his hand through his hair. Daylight lit up the whole room and Martyn could faintly smell the smoke coming from the unlit lanterns. Someone must have came down to blow them out recently. He sighed, at least he didn’t have another nightmare.
Best to get up now.
Martyn got out of bed and stretched his arms, yawning. Everything looked normal. He got his bag and knife and stashed it on his person then exited the sick bay. His eyes squinted to adjust to the morning light, blinking several times as he popped his head out of the lower deck to scan around.
He wasn’t the only one awake, but that didn’t mean everyone was up.
Martyn saw Joel and Mumbo by the steering wheel, and Bdubs was polishing some of the harpoons, but no sight of Grian, Lizzie, Cleo or Scar. There were a couple of Kites awake too, minding their own business as they lingered on the sides of the ship and talked amongst themselves. Martyn walked up to Joel and Mumbo. The two smiled when they saw him.
“Good morning,” Martyn smiled back at the two. “How are you two doing?”
“Doing fine. How was your sleep?” Joel glanced at Martyn. “No nightmares, I’d hope.”
“Lizzie told you?”
Joel shrugged, “Of course she did,” he put a hand on his chest and smirked, “It’s my duty as a captain to keep everyone sane.”
Martyn chuckled and rolled his eyes, “Oh yes, honorable captain.” He gave a mock salute as he, Joel, and Mumbo shared a laugh. Both Joel and Grian never let their authority as captains rule the ship. They were all treated as equals, which Martyn appreciated. They were all friends outside of hunter work, no reason to have any changes here.
Unlike some other group, Martyn thought bitterly. Those Kestrels… they never treated him like a friend, maybe it hurt less when he left because there was no one he cared about other than Ren.
Martyn hoped his standing with Grian didn’t change. It didn’t look like his relationship changed with Joel at all, but Martyn wasn’t sure. Grian likely told Joel, given that they were brothers.
Martyn sighed. Joel dropped his smile and raised an eyebrow, nudging Mumbo as he gestured to Martyn in a clear indication for him to start talking.
“What happened down there?” Mumbo asked, tilting his head as he looked at Martyn, “What did you see?”
Ah, there it is.
It made sense for them to ask him, but Martyn still wasn’t sure how to answer. The image of the sea prince burned in his mind, but articulating it was a whole different story. His throat seemed to tighten.
“I saw…,” Martyn stared outwards, furrowing his eyebrows together as Mumbo leaned in. “I… saw… I don’t know.” He lied, shaking his head.
Why was talking about it so hard? Martyn rubbed his forehead as he leaned against the railing. Mumbo hummed before his eyes widened and leaned closer to Martyn.
“It’s a new beast?” Mumbo grinned and opened his notebook, looking at Martyn expectantly. “Now you have to tell me.” One of Mumbo’s eyes twitched. The man loved his research, but maybe it was something Martyn could discuss with him when he actually understood what he’d experienced.
Martyn waved his hand, brushing the thought away, “It’s hard to describe it,” he looked away. “Just… let me process things first.”
Joel spoke, but his eyes were forward and his voice low, “That beast must’ve really gotten to you.”
“Yeah, it did,” Martyn crossed his arms. “The rumors of the world border being a place with dangerous beasts was true.”
And the thought of a sea prince being there was true, too.
“Just so long as you don’t forget. We can explore it more later. We’re heading back to shore for now,” Joel looked at Martyn and Mumbo, then gestured forward. “There should be an island this way.”
“Oh, good,” Martyn sighed. It wasn’t uncommon for the Canaries to take a stop once in a while, but they had people on board. Martyn wasn’t sure what the Kites would do, but he wanted to make sure they were well-off before they parted ways. More hunters out at sea was better, especially before winter sets in. “I’d want to talk to those Kites a bit and see what their deal is.”
Joel laughed, “Goodluck with that,” he rolled his eyes. “Most of them really don’t like us.”
“With my charms? I think I’ll win them over,” Martyn grinned. Joel and Mumbo looked at him with barely veiled amusement. “I’ll see you later!” Martyn called as he waved and left, looking at some of the unfamiliar faces as Mumbo and Joel resumed their previous conversation about their favorite foods, smiling and laughing as they teased at the other’s food choices.
Martyn walked down and stood against the railing, wondering who to approach first.
It seemed like the Kites wanted to approach him instead.
“Hey, you, guy with the bandana!” A boy called out. He had brown scruffy hair and brown eyes with a red bandana and vest, a light brown collared shirt and a lime green sash tied to his waist. Martyn’s eyes widened as the boy approached him, the dusty-rose haired Kite following a couple steps behind him. The boy looked up at Martyn, his hands on his hips, “What happened to you back there? I thought you king’s hunters were good at what you do.” He crossed his arms with a smug look on his face.
“We are good at what we do! There’s no monster attacks now, are there?” Martyn cracked a smile, trying to keep his tone light. He tilted his head, “And my name’s Martyn, what are your names?”
“Tubbo, and this guy’s Bek,” Tubbo gestured to himself and Bek. “Still, it's pretty sad if you climb out of cold water and the first thing you do is pass out.” He raised his eyebrows.
Don’t get upset. They’re frustrated. It’s better to deal with them than with the Kestrels.
“No it isn’t,” Martyn spoke quickly, trying hard not to put any malice in his tone. “It’s a justifiable reaction! Anyone would after experiencing that.”
“Not us! We’re Kites, we live for the fight,” Bek grinned manically, one of his eyes twitched. “You jumped off and stabbed the scuttler straight through its scales! That’s awesome! You should be proud of it, not up and collapse.”
Martyn shook his head, forcing a laugh. “I’m not saying I’m not proud of it, but it was a risky move.”
It also caused Grian to be pretty distraught. Martyn glanced away and bit his lip, rubbing the back of his neck. Hopefully they could make up later, he didn’t want to grow any distance between him and Grian.
It didn’t feel right.
“Embrace the risk! You can’t live in safety forever– live a little!” Tubbo gave Martyn a little nudge with his elbow and grinned.
Martyn raised his hands, “That’s not really how we operate–”
Bek groaned, “Oh come on. You’re the king’s hunters, you get spoiled, so you don’t try anything new. That’s so boring.”
Martyn felt himself bristle. Being the king’s hunters meant they were the best of the best. Martyn was proud of himself and his crew for getting that far, so to be told they were spoiled brats like the Kestrels were forced a small groan out of him. It wasn’t his fault the king chose the best of the best, and it wasn’t his fault that the best of the best just wasn’t the Kites. The Canaries were capable of handling dangerous missions– they were a better crew for missions the king sent hunters on- the best!
Bek wrapped their arm around Tubbo, “Let’s go, Tubbo, clearly he doesn’t get it. Later, Martie.” He rolled his eyes and waved at Martyn before walking away. Tubbo stuck his tongue out and the two approached other Kites instead.
“It's Martyn!” Martyn crossed his arms.
They weren’t going to be there for too long, he tried to console himself, once they got a new ship and arranged for some supplies, Martyn wouldn’t have to deal with them anymore. Hopefully that won’t be too far from now.
“Tough crowd, huh?”
Martyn flinched at the sudden voice. He turned to see the cooperative survivor. She looked at Tubbo and Bek before looking back at Martyn and giving him a smile, “Don’t worry about them, they aren’t used to being helped,” she placed a hand to her chest. “I think what you did was amazing. It must’ve taken a lot of heart to dive into a whirlpool just to kill the thing.”
Martyn smiled, “Thank you, you’re…”
“Katherine. My name’s Katherine. It’s nice to meet you too, Martyn.”
Katherine leaned against the railing, propping her arms against it as her body faced the sea. “I’m not going to ask about… that, as you don’t seem to be keen on sharing,” she motioned to the ocean and back to Martyn. “But how are you feeling now?”
“Honestly? I feel good to be alive, I’ve never felt so… helpless, before.” Martyn’s eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the floor. He’s been training to be a hunter all his life, so he knew to be prepared for certain situations. But that situation was so unlike any other he’d faced before.
Who would be prepared to suddenly stare a sea prince in the face?
“You look like you’ve been in the hunting scene for a while now,” Katherine laughed. She raised an eyebrow, “And you’re telling me you’ve never had that feeling before now?”
“Not exactly,” Martyn shrugged, “I’ve been training to be a hunter my whole life–”
“That’s a lot of hunting,” Katherine smiled, “Where does your passion come from?”
“What do you mean?”
Katherine blinked. She stayed quiet for a couple of seconds before giggling, “Your passion! What drives you forward! Something that helps you realize how great you’ve been doing,” she waved her hand, “Riches, fame, love… any of that.”
“I… I don’t know,” Martyn paused. He leaned his back against the railing and looked up at the blue sky above them. After a long moment, he turned to Katherine, “What’s yours?”
“How do you not know?” Katherine’s eyes widened, but still had a playful smile on her face. “You’ve been hunting for years, even the king thinks you’re great hunters– and there’s nothing pushing you forward?” She didn’t wait for a response. “But fine, I’ll tell you mine,” she shrugged and rolled her eyes. “My girlfriend waits for me. Rather– she travels, I move around a lot, but we always end up seeing each other. I miss her every day, but she knows I’ll come back for her.”
Just like a certain someone.
Scott was always waiting for Martyn back on the isle. Martyn wondered what the ginger got up to whenever Martyn left with the Canaries. Did Scott miss Martyn as much as Martyn did Scott? He blushed at the thought. The thought that Scott missed him made Martyn feel warm.
“That’s nice, I do have someone like that, then,” Martyn chuckled. “At the end of every month, I come home to see this guy, and it hurts my heart to leave him all the time.”
“Then stay with him longer,” Katherine shrugged. “The monsters can wait.”
“That’s the thing, I can’t–”
“Can’t, or won't?” Katherine raised an eyebrow and smirked. “If the guy cares for you, and you care for him, you have to sort something out, you know?”
Martyn scratched the back of his head. He sighed, “It’s… complicated.”
“Love is complicated, trust me. But I swear, the motivation to see the person you care about the most will cause you to do crazy things,” Katherine chuckled, staring into the ocean. “You can’t be an effective hunter if you can’t catch your prey, you know?”
“What?”
“Humor me a bit, Martyn!” Katherine pushed Martyn with a giggle. “You’re passionate about hunting, and you aren’t sure why, but this guy consumes your life the moment you see him again. You want to return to him, don’t you?”
“I do,” Martyn nodded. “More than anything.”
“And you almost died, right?”
Martyn paused. He looked at the ground and placed his hands in his pocket. “...right.” His eyebrows furrowed at the thought.
He almost died.
He would’ve broken Scott’s promise.
That must never happen.
He can’t imagine how Scott would react to his death. He didn’t want to imagine it.
Katherine placed a hand on Martyn’s shoulder. “Then channel that. You’re going to come home to him, and you’re going to fight for it.”
Martyn smiled back. “I will,” he turned to look at Katherine. “But why are you giving me this talk?”
“Because I like your spirit,” Katherine removed her hand from Martyn's shoulder and stretched. “And to really be a hunter, you need that drive.” She smiled at him.
Martyn nodded. The sooner this was all over, the sooner he’d get to see Scott. He would do whatever it took to go back home to him. Maybe it was stupid to only realize his drive now, but that sea prince encounter would change his life forever.
“Anyway, I’ll leave you to think about it,” Katherine shrugged. “I’ve got a letter I need to start writing. I’ll see you around!” She gave Martyn a small wave, and he waved back. He watched Katherine walk downstairs, then he turned back to the open sea behind him.
The wind rustled through his messy blonde hair as he let out a sigh. He inhaled the smell of the salty sea and listened to the sounds of the water against the ship’s wood and metal frame as white, puffy clouds passed them by. He turned to face the front of the ship, where he saw the island they were about to dock at.
Multiple tall, spiraling rocks towered over the water like a stone forest. The clouds overhead were no longer small and white but instead dark and stormy. Thick mist wrapped around the island like a veil, secluding it from the outside world.
It didn’t look like it was a friendly place, but it was the closest island they could seek refuge on. They’d never ventured this far south before, so maybe there were better options, but it was too late to turn back now. Martyn heard the sound of muffled, distant conversations, either between the Kites or his crew, he wasn’t sure. Martyn lingered on his talk with Katherine.
Whatever might end up happening on this island, Martyn swore he’d come back alive. It looked dangerous, but his priority was returning to Scott. He was going to come home alive.
Not even the sea prince could stop him.
“I’ll keep my promise, Scott. Just wait for me.”

Alkaid's White Day Poem
1 teacup, 2 teacups,
and another teacup.
Teacups now 3.
I’m counting away the time
until you and I both
can finally be set free.
It’s a red pill or blue pill kind of question.
How do I separate the lies from the truth?
The answer remaining is just me and you.
What was broken can be rebuilt.
An Eden of our own visions.
As long as you have me,
you won’t be lonely.
You are the coming of spring
with all the promises yet to come.
You are the first of many firsts,
a new beginning.
Give me all the starry night skies,
Aurora borealis Northern Lights,
a forest of fireflies,
and a cozy home with lantern light.
Give me a home safe, warm, and bright
where we belong.
A traveler, an astronomer,
a photographer, or a mage.
An actor masquerading in person or on a stage,
a lonely bird trapped in a self-made cage,
a mysterious agent, or an elegant rose elf.
I don’t care what you are when you’re with me
as long as you be your true self.

How does everyone’s room look like…?
*AHEM-
*Tongbei’s room is filled with night-skies and galaxy colors as well as glow-in-the-dark constellations, just like every bedroom in the Palace, Tongbei has a purple king-sized bedroom with a see-through curtain that resembles a starry night, to contrast the galaxy-covered room, his furniture is mostly white with him not needing a lantern as he can just use the glow-in-the-dark light. It also has a small space for his books in potion making*
*Macaque’s room is stylized in traditional Chinese with a hint of modernity to it.*
Tumblr media
*Something like this except with less light and more shadowy-like theme. Also remove the plants. He has a separate space for his puppetry and arts and crafts, as well as a personal radio*
*Wukong’s room is a little more simple, actually Wukong never customizes his room, he mostly stays by and leaves, so it looks bit like this*
Tumblr media
*Rumble and Savage have a more modern looking room, with a twin-sized bed separated from purple to red. One space is for Rumble and one space for Savage, Rumble’s side is filled with posters for games and Savage’s side is filled with bookshelves*
*Chikao’s bedroom looks like this*

Creating a Magical Atmosphere: Fairy Light Backdrops for Outdoor Weddings
Tumblr media
Outdoor weddings have an inherent charm and beauty that can be elevated to enchanting levels with the right decor. One of the most popular and bewitching decor elements for outdoor weddings is the fairy light backdrop. These delicate, twinkling lights can transform any outdoor venue into a magical wonderland, leaving guests spellbound. Here's how you can create a truly magical atmosphere with fairy light backdrops for your outdoor wedding.
1. Choose the Perfect Location
Selecting the right location is crucial for creating a magical atmosphere. Consider natural settings like gardens, beaches, or forests, where fairy lights can blend seamlessly with the surroundings. Trees, arbors, or open skies can serve as the perfect canvas for your fairy light backdrop.
2. Create a Fairytale Entrance
Guide your guests into the enchanted world of your wedding by lining the entrance with fairy lights. Draping them along pathways or framing doorways with cascading lights can set the tone for what's to come.
3. Magical Ceremony Backdrops
Exchange vows under a breathtaking fairy light canopy. Hang strings of lights from trees or a wooden arch to create an ethereal backdrop for your ceremony. As you say "I do," the soft glow of the fairy lights will add a touch of magic to the moment.
4. Dining under the Stars
Fairy light strings placed above the dining tables can illuminate your reception area. The cozy and welcoming atmosphere will give guests the impression that they are dining under a starry sky. The effect will be extremely enchanting when combined with candles and lanterns.
5. Dance the Night Away
With a covering of fairy lights, your dance floor can be transformed into a fantastical world. Your dance floor will come alive with a shimmering glow as the sun sets and the stars come out, making the night unforgettable.
6. Personalize with Accents
Don't hesitate to add personal touches with fairy lights. Hang polaroid photos, mason jars, or other decorative elements amidst the lights to infuse your unique style into the decor.
7. Light Up the Night
Keep the magic alive by extending the fairy lights throughout the night. A grand exit under a tunnel of twinkling lights will be the perfect conclusion to your enchanting outdoor wedding.
The power of fairy light backdrops to turn outdoor wedding photo gallery settings into enchanted wonderlands is unmatched. You may create a fantastic ambiance with imagination and attention to detail that will not only leave a lasting impression but also make your special day a fairytale come true. Therefore, embrace the romance and let fairy lights dazzle your outdoor wedding.

A story about coming of age and community, The Moth Keeper is filled with magic, hope, and friendship. “Expressing quiet resilience, this story lifts up nature’s symbiotic relationships and the power of community.” –Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Review:
A gorgeous and heartwarming story about finding your place in the world. the power of community, hope, and friendship. This was a absolutely charming and heart warming story about a village that has a tradition of having a Moth Keeper, someone who is the protector of the lunar moths that allow the Night-Lily flower to bloom once a year. These flowers help the village continue to thrive and now it is Anya’s turn to become the new Moth Keeper. Anya was excited to be given such an important and honored role in her community, but the job is not what she thought it would be like. Night after lonely night, she wanders under the dark starry skies with her single lantern, guiding the moths. The loneliness grows and Anya’s yearning to prove her worth to her community and show her thanks to her friends and village might come at the cost of her own growing loneliness and sadness. Anya yearns for more but there are consequences to keeping all your emotions locked up and not asking for help, and this could impact not only the moths but her entire village. Can she save herself and her village before it’s too late? This was truly a touching story, filled with gorgeous artwork and a whimsical and enchanting feeling that would make a perfect read for Studio Ghibli fans!
*Thanks Netgalley and Random House Children's, Random House Graphic for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Ford/Reader, "My doctor says I'm lacking vitamin U."
Fandom: Gravity FallsPairing: Ford/ReaderSFW?: yesNotes: Pre-Weirdmageddon; Stan hires you for whatever reason, idk man
-
You had seen him by chance one day, and from that day, you were set on getting the seemingly stoic man to smile. He was always so busy, always so focused on something just outside of your line of sight… as if he were seeing things in a way you just couldn’t. It was frustrating. So, once you scored the job of cashier at the Mystery Shack, you decided that you would absolutely be able to do it.
You’d be able to get the man to crack a smile.
So one of the rare times where he emerged from his super secret yet not very secret lab entrance behind the vending machine, you set down your phone and met eyes with him. He looked away first, after a few seconds, and you realized that he might not be used to human interaction. Which was fine. You weren’t really, either. But you were a woman on a mission, damn it, and you were determined!
“Hey, Ford. Didn’t think I’d see you while I was here,” you said easily, sending him a smile, and he cleared his throat into a tightly closed six-fingered fist.
“Yes, well. Was there something you needed?”
Ouch. Okay, not doing so well, Gotta step it up a little.
“Actually, yeah. See… I went to the doctor the other day--” at this his brows furrow, and you’re not sure if it’s in irritation, or concern… but the way his mouth settles into a frown is definitely not the direction you were wanting, so you continued quickly. “--and they said that I have a severe vitamin deficiency.”
“That’s unfortunate… I suppose there are some things I could pull together to try and help, if that’s what you’re asking… What vitamin did you say it was you were deficient in?” He was already mumbling under his breath, pulling out a notepad and pen and jotting down notes as his eyes seemed to scan over you. You felt yourself flush a bit at his intense gaze, but it became obvious rather quickly that he was just jotting down ‘symptoms’.
“Ah, the most important one.” His hands scribbled furiously. “They said I’m lacking in Vitamin U.”
His hands stopped moving, frown deeping on his face as he muttered it under his breath, very obviously thinking this over in his head. It wasn’t until he stopped cold, a flush rising to his cheeks, that you felt yourself release the breath you hadn’t even realized you’d been holding.
He opened his mouth, then closed it again. Opened it, then let out a soft wheezing sound instead of words, and he cleared his throat, turning away from you.
“Well…” he finally was able to say, his frown twitching at the edges, and you’d worried if maybe you’d overdone it… but when he glanced back at you, you just smiled brightly at him, and then you saw it. It was small, really, but it was enough that you could tell from behind his hand, the way it reached his brown eyes. “I suppose we’ll...need to do something about that, won’t we?”
Heat rose to your face, touching the tips of your ears, and you couldn’t help it. You laughed. Not in a mocking way, but in a relieved kind of way, and he must have been able to pick up on that, because then he was chuckling with you, and your heart felt a hundred times lighter than it had only a moment ago.
Footsteps came from down the hall and that smile and laughter quickly disappeared from his person, and he gave you a curt nod before heading out the front door of the Mystery Shack. And you would have mourned the loss of them, but you were just so elated to have seen them in the first place…
You filed this memory away as something precious that you would hold onto, for when worse times came.

College Ford x shy! male! reader
Hi! Dedicating this to @lantern-light-and-starry-skies and @guilty-pleasures-abound for the great idea!  I hope my writing suffices, it’s a lil angsty ;n;
Title- Hopes for the Hopeless
Pairing- Ford x reader, Backupsmore Ford x reader
Characters- Stanford Pines, You, Fiddleford McGucket, unnamed professors, unnamed students
Summary- You live in your own little world, full of fantasy and surprises.  What happens when campus genius Ford Pines makes his way into your bubble?
Tags- Heartbreak, angst, sorry guys it’s sad, male!reader, though nothing’s specifically pointed to you being male, it’s fine, shy!reader, fluff, Ford x reader
Backupsmore University was a land of missed opportunities and disappointment.  If you were gifted, it didn’t matter.  You were in the deep, dark maw that was Backupsmore and there was almost nothing you could do about it once you were enrolled.
Almost.
If you partner up with the college’s 2+2 program, it got you out of there within two years with the credits necessary to take the next level of courses in your major somewhere else.  It was a win-win for both the college and the students, for obvious reasons.
That’s why you were here.  You double majored in Art and Creative Writing, which always seemed to bore more than half of the people who asked (most being family).  You always assure them, however, that you are the best in class.  After all, you were told so by the one and only brainiac on campus; Stanford Pines.
When you first met him, he struck you as a bright-eyed, wildly curious geek.  Not to say that you weren’t a geek yourself-- the Tolkien books weighing down your book bag certainly proved that.  But the way he challenged the professor at least once every class period struck you as both odd and fascinating.  You had always wondered what it was like to be that enthusiastic and curious, like many were once.
So when Stanford had been urged to observe his classmates as per instruction (don’t just pursue yourself, compare yourself, Pines!), and had leaned in to glance at your work, you were surprised by how much interest he had taken into it.  “This linework is impeccable, how did you manage to get that consistency with that pen?!” or “Your shading style compliments the negative space of the page very well!”
It was safe to say that after that, you were smitten with him.
Your desires to transfer to another school were slowly being abandoned with the hopes that he would notice you, poor ol’ you, in any way possible.  You tried wearing something other than your jeans and sweatshirt for something a little catchier, but he didn’t seem to notice.  You tried casually flirting with him, which turned into you just blabbering on and on about naked mole rats, which was awkward for the both of you.  You even tried to read up on books that could potentially teach you how to ‘catch a man’, but anything like that was classified as cheesy romance novels that all the middle-aged professors and freshman girls were checking out from the library, so you were left in the dust.  To simply daydream in your own little world, what it would be like to hold his wonderfully weird hands, to see him smile just for you, to lean in for a kiss at the same time and feel the affection radiating off of him…
“Y/N?  Are you with me?”  Your thoughts were interrupted by Ford, who was walking beside you up a short flight of stairs.  You flushed red, and quickly reassured him that you, in fact, were.  And totally not dozing off.  Not at all.
The genius chuckled, “Well, I certainly hope not!  I wouldn’t want you passing out, especially on the stairs!  What an awful place to fall...”  You nodded, your cheeks a pretty pink now.  That’s right, you were going to Ford’s dorm.  Not for anything scandalous!  The two of you were studying for quite a while at your apartment just off campus.  And seeing as though you didn’t want him to stress about his term paper that ‘still needed reworking’, you wanted to drive him back. You’ve been there, totally stressful…. Although you couldn’t help but wonder what may have happened if he decided to stay the night?
“Glad ya’ could join me, Ford, at…”  A southern voice sounded from the darkness of the room, “... 1:47 in th’morinin’.  Where’ve you been all darn night, huh?”  “Certainly not at any jug-band concerts, I’ll have you know.”  Ford responded hastily, turning to set up the table in the corner to continue his term paper.
You turned to Ford’s roommate, offering a small wave of hello.  He perked up at the sight of a guest, and smiled fondly.  “You’re Y/N I presume?”  You’re cheeks went pink again, and asked the man how he knew you.  He laughed, “Ford talks about ya’ sometimes!  Y’seem like a real nice fella’, is all.”  He reaches out a long-fingered hand for you to shake, “Fiddleford McGucket.  Pleased t’meetcha!”  You nod in agreement, a few moments later finding yourself looking around on Ford’s side of the dorm before quickly saying goodnight to the both of them and exiting.
You had become more embarrassed by yourself than you ever had before.  You had imagined all sorts of both innocent and lewd situations with the brainiac and yourself there in his dorm… They were all so vivid that you could almost reach out and make them all reality.
You came to a logical conclusion.
You were gonna get a haircut.
It wasn’t all that intense, really.  Before, your hair ended at about shoulder-length and was often unkempt, but now it widened out, exposing your ears and brushing your bangs off to the side ever so carefully.  You looked in the mirror that afternoon and finally decided on what to do… You were going to tell him how you feel.
The following day, when 9:30 rolled around for Drawing and Painting class, you wore your best duds-- high waisted slacks with a button up shirt with two, no THREE, buttons undone from the top, and the sleeves rolled up to your elbows.  All complete with sleek, dark shoes and a casual belt with a silver buckle, you felt like you could do anything you wanted!  It had to go positive when you looked this good, right?
“I’m sorry… I’m afraid I don’t feel the same.”
You leaned away from Ford.  What did he say?
“I… I don’t feel the same, Y/N.”
Shit, you said that out loud?  Fuck.  Why did this happen?  Why does this always have to happen…
You always get your hopes up with a guy, don’t you?  You always end up being disappointed by what you can’t have-- Correction, by what you’ve never even had in the first place.  You really thought it could be possible to love someone, even after your last breakup?  Stanford was different, but apparently not, according to the situation at hand.  Fuck, how could you be so stupid?!
“Hey.. Hey, please don’t-- Don’t cry.  I’m sorry, I really am!  I’m not looking for a relationship right now… I thought you knew that, please don’t cry.”
You both stood there now, outside the classroom, 3 feet apart from where you were; your hand was on his arm, the other hand close to your chest.  Now they were both clenched against each other, trying to find some way to escape your body as hot tears flew from your eyes like someone turned on a sprinkler.
You hadn’t even realized you were crying until he pointed it out to you, to which you turned away from his gaze and avoided it.  You apologized, too, mostly on instinct, and promised that you’d never bother him again, quickly turning to leave.
Ford suddenly grabbed your arm after a single moment of hesitation, “Y/N, wait!”  You turned to look at him-- your eyes beginning to puff up and turn a shade of pink, letting your tears drip down off your chin, you waited for him to say something (anything!) before shaking him off and running to your car.
After throwing yourself in the driver’s seat, you started up the engine, both hands clenched on the wheel.  After holding in everything from the previous moment to the wheel, you finally let go.  Wailing and weeping, similar to a child.  However, you would think that would be associated with selfishness or with tantrum.
No, you cried like a child who’s dreams were crushed.  Who’s hopes were burnt like the cheapest wood in the forest.
You wondered how long the heartbreak would last this time.
If you made it to here, I thank you!  This certainly isn’t my first time writing but it was fun to do!  Leave a comment or a like and I’d love to talk to anyone about our favorite boy!

For Peter, Narnia was soaring towers and summer blue skies. It was the smell of horses and fresh bread and polish and leather. It was the wise murmuring of centaurs, the laughter of dryads, the wild dances of the fauns, the haunting melodies of the naids. It was silken, billowing tents of royal purple and lion gold, the clash of steel on steel, the smoky-sweet smell of a campfire. Narnia was racing through a forest, faster-faster-faster, heart thumping, blood rushing, wild glee bubbling up behind your throat. Narnia was flags flying, lions roaring, the distant beating of drums, the joyous satsifaction of knowing you've won - the image disappears and he's back home but Peter is beaming.
For Susan, Narnia was starry nights and crystal caves. It was tracing unknown constellations Tarva-and-Alambil and charting unknown seas. It was delegations and dignitaries and the grandest of balls and feeling oh so grown up. Narnia was running barefoot through stone corridors, the smell of perfume all jasmine-and-myrtle-and-nighttime-mist, secretive smiles and laughing eyes, a myriad of unexplored chambers, the flickering light of a fiery torch, the fairy-light touch of curling vines on her bare shoulder, the softest of fabrics pooling around her, falling to the floor, emerald green vivid against the warm buttery stone. Narnia was the straining pull of a bow string, the gleaming tips of arrows, the reassuring weight of an ivory horn in its place at her hip. Narnia was wind and winter bringing far-off friends to her doorstep. Narnia was crossing mountains and oceans and visisting exotic lands and learning foreign tongues. Narnia was dancing away the night with her dearest friends, swaying and twirling and spinning-spinning-spinning, the refracted light of the chandeliers scattering broken rainbows like beads- the memory fades and she's back home but Susan is shining.
For Edmund, Narnia was wet earth and dappled sunlight and fresh grass. It was picnics in golden fields, hanging upside down from aging rafters, cool water soothing wounded hands, four well worn coats folded in a trunk. It was obsidian chess pieces and marble chess boards, curling silver and intricate gold crowns, whorling patterns carved into leather saddles, a single lone lantern rising high above the surrounding forest. Narnia was magic and enchantments and making the impossible seem easier than breathing. Narnia was plumes of coloured smoke and sparks of metallic fire and the birth of hope and light. Narnia was ice and snow and an oppressive castle with sharp towers and terrible smiles and cruel whips and loss and loneliness and quiet sorrow Narnia was summer and life and Lucy playing the pianoforte in the evenings and Susan and Peter sparring in the mornings and Edmund buried under stacks of old books from dusk till dawn and Phillip scolding him for not getting enough sleep in one breath and badgering him for apples in the next- the dream is broken and he's back home but Edmund is laughing.
For Lucy, Narnia was a world in a world in a world. It was flying higher and higher and higher on the backs of griffins, and falling down down down to swim with the merfolk and going three rounds at the Battle of Beruna and emerging victorious, hair sweaty, face flushed. Narnia was ruby-red-umbrellas and coal-black-horses and crystal-clear-oceans and bright-joyful-laughter. Narnia was strong, supple boots and flowing white dresses and soft pink flowers caught in riotous golden curls. Narnia was dancing flames and fauns playing flutes and the softest golden fur imaginable. Narnia was home and hope and unconditional love and- the door opens and she's back home but Lucy is smiling.

‘A Rite of Hallowing for the Working Ground’
“Required for this rite are the following: A large nail of iron, an iron knife or a staff of blackthorn, some means of marking out the circle and of making a fire, the horse hair scourge, a cup or horn, a good drink, an incense containing dragon’s blood resin, some charcoal and a suitable vessel to burn it in.
The walk to the secret place should be a silent, meditative act; breathing and drawing deeply of the spirit essence of the land as the rite’s participants go.
Upon reaching the place, one should begin by quietly clearing the earth that is to form the area of the working ground, before visibly marking out the
circumference of the circle, and go about gathering wood for a small fire. Again, these should be meditative acts in which the spirits of place are acknowledged and silently called upon. The gathered wood is placed, for the time being, with the items for the rite in the east, where the lighted lantern burns and the incense smoke arises from the coals.
The iron knife, or blackthorn staff, is now taken up, and is used to trace the circle’s edge, sun-wise from the east and back to the east three times whilst a charm is spoken:
Thrice be conjured Compass Bound,
Devil’s Acre, Dancing Ground,
Marked and hallowed Castle moat,
Blessed field of the goat!
Meadow of the Hidden Flame,
Hallowed in the Horned One’s Name!
The knife or blackthorn staff is then used to mark the equal-armed cross in the centre of the circle; its four arms aligned to the four cardinal points. About this sign, in stillness and silence, those of the spirit presences and essences of the place in inner communion, so as to become one with the physical and spiritual reality of the locus.
The iron nowl is now brought to the centre of the circle, and held aloft to the heavens in the right hand. Within a covine rite, this is done by the company together. As the nowl is held, a charm is spoken to draw down the divine fire from the heavens above:
Horned Father of the Wise,
Serpent-fire of the skies,
Let fall to earth that ancient flame,
Azazel, Tubal-Qayin!
By thunderbolt and starry shower,
To tend and turn the Horse of Power!
When the nowl is felt to burn bright with the fire of the heavens, it is switched to the left hand and brought down to the cross marked upon the earth, and pushed or struck deep into its midst. Within this act is reified the bringing of the spiritual light into matter and manifestation, and the union of spirit with the elements of the manifest world.
Dark Bull of the coal-black ground,
Hallowed of the witches ’ Round,
Stir the serpent of the deep,
Arise earth’s fire to our keep.
Set the fertile plot ablaze,
To turn the mill and work the maze.
With these words having been spoken in preparation, the small fire is now to be built upon the cross and lit, and the Devil’s Scourge is taken up in the right hand. A sun-wise mill dance is now begun about the fire, the earth symbolically and rhythmically scourged to raise the serpent of the earth, bring fertility unto the rite and to drive the ‘steed of power’onward. During the mill dance, a charm is used, such as the following. After a while, the charm may develop into a chant using the last two lines only:
Serpent turn, awake, arise,
About the fire the Mill be trod,
Enflame the Circle of the Wise,
By scourge, by broom, by dancing rod.
By Cauldron-cup and iron blade,
Tread the mill about the fire,
By Serpent-seed and powers bade,
Stir and raise the Serpent higher!
When the potency of the inner fire and that of the working ground are felt to have been raised to a high intensity, the participants are to drop to their hands and knees in order to give the raised power unto the encompassed earth. After a little while, the cup is filled and brought, with the iron knife, to the centre of the working ground. Held above the fire, the knife blade is lowered into the cup and its content blessed:
By the Old Serpent’s fire, above and below,
By the quarters crossed where All is One!
Hallowed and blessed,
So shall it be!
A little of the cup’s content is poured into the fire before the participants of the rite partake. The rite is now closed by the cup being carried around the circle’s edge against the sun, from east back to east, pouring a little drink upon the earth at each of the cardinal points. The circle may be opened by being traced, as it was before with the blade or staff, but against the sun. All is now cleared away, and the place departed with no visible signs of the rite being left. After three days and three nights, the nowl is retrieved from the earth at the working ground’s midst.”
