Today's lesson was practice with various basic Korean words. I liked applying what I knew about the basic consonants and letters to sound out each word. Surprisingly, I knew how a lot of the basic words were said already. This is probably because I watch WAYYY too many kdramas haha. Anyways, it was fun learning to spell these words and practicing the pronounciation for each one.
Another thing that helped make this lesson interesting was the use of doodles! As you may have noticed from the pictures, I love to draw little things to help me remember what I've learnt. However, I also like taking breaks in between the lesson to draw something a bit bigger. On the first page I chose to draw a picture of a young girl, which was one of the words (sohnyuh). On the second page I drew Luffy because I am an avid anime fan and thought of him when learning the word hat (moja). #1 tip: DONT HESITATE TO DRAW WHILE LEARNING!!!
I found it interesting how many korean words are extremely similar/ the same as english words, but just said with a strong korean accent. For example pasta becoming " pa suh tah". I noticed that this was a trend for many foreign words. This was cool to see because I have noticed this happen in my native tongue, Malayalam, as well. Certain words just don't exist in the language, or are obsolote, because they are never used. Instead, the english word is integrated into the native language, but just with a strong accent placed on it. I guess this goes to show how important and pervasive English is. I can't wait to learn more about what other words may be pronounced similarly!
Anyways, thanks for tuning in to my korean journal journey once again! See you guys soon!

💌: inside-my-phone format is back!🍃 do you agree/disagree with my MTL rankings? what motivates you? 👀
i can be a more empathetic, understanding, and supportive person who makes sure to only cuss people out in languages they don't understand so that their feelings aren't hurt ❤️
i can talk to more people who will probably think i'm an idiot because of how badly i speak their language 👄
i can nurture my self-confidence/-esteem as long as i don't think too hard about how much i don't know 🥰
i can read more books, articles, people arguing on the internet, etc. 📚
i can travel to foreign countries more easily until someone asks me to translate something important and i mess up and land us both in prison or something ✈️
i can unlock new work opportunities until someone asks me to translate something important and i mess up and land us both in prison or something 💼
i can multitask better even though i shouldn't even be doing it in the first place 🤹‍♀️
i can watch my favorite shows/listen to my favorite songs without subtitles/translations so that my brain rot can continue in peace 📺
i can, on the other hand, stop losing brain cells?? 🧠
i can eavesdrop on more people, probably at the grocery store 🙉
i can show off at work and other places where it is appropriate to show off irrelevant skills ✨
sex appeal?? 🥵

2.18.2024 — 오늘 제 여동생의 방에서 공부해요. 저는 너무 바빠. Besides the chapter quiz, which should really only take 십오 minutes or less, I’m literally taking the day off of work and studying to run errands and clean. 근데, 저는 책상을 샀어요. I’m sort of excited, mostly to decorate my space. It’s pretty small, but I’ll make it my own. Midterms are this week along with normal course work, so here we go!

How Do Korean Celebrate Seollal
What Koreans do for Lunar New Years.
1. Seollal
Tumblr media
Seollal is a very important celebration and holiday for Koreans. It is the first day of the first month according to the lunar calendar of Korean. Lunar New Year is celebrated in many culture across Asia and usually is celebrated between late winter and early spring
2. Going To Hometown
Tumblr media
New Year’s Day is a time for family members who may be living in different areas because of work to return to their hometowns. During this time, so many Korean travel that it’s jokingly called a “a great migration” There are many people heading to their hometowns, so traffic is very bad.
3. Going To Family Home
Tumblr media
During the Seollal holiday, KTX train tickets are very hard to buy. Korean people book discounted tickets on the Korail homepage days in advance. Tickets sell out in a flash and it’s a fierce battle. Some people even sleep outside Seoul Station to get tickets.
4. Ancestral Rites
Tumblr media
During Seollal, Korean practice ancestral rites called jesa during the day. Everyone in the family is busy preparing food the day before Seollal. The supermarket and marts are full of people buying fruits, vegetables, meats and other ingredients for Seollal foods.
In Korea, married women return home the day before Seollal to help their mother-in-law prepare food and help wash dishes. On the other hand, Korean men often rest and enjoy their time at home. But now, that Korean society is changing and gender equality is increasing, there are many families where men and women both help prepare meals.
5. Rice Cake Soup
Tumblr media
The food you can’t leave out on Seollal is tteokguk or rice cake soup. It is said that you gain a year in age when you eat it on New Year’s. Tteokguk is a traditional Korean food made by cutting rice cake into thin slice and boiling them in broth. It’s topped with egg, meat, and other ingredients.
6. Bowing
Tumblr media
Koreans wish their elders a happy new year by performing a bow called sebae. Usually, the elders of the family sit, and the children go in front and bow to them to wish them good luck in the coming year. then the elders give their children money to symbolize their blessings. For this reason, Seollal is an exciting day for the children to get some extra spending money.
7. Traditional Games
Tumblr media
Yut Nori is a traditional game that many still play. It’s played by throwing four sticks and different combinations correspond to different movements, like a board game. A game adults like to play instead of traditional games is Hwatu. Sometimes, they make bets with small amounts of money while playing, so it can lead to a fight.
8. Visiting Ancestors’ Graves
Tumblr media
In Korea, after the ancestral right are performed on the first morning of Seollal, they go to their ancestors’ graves to greet them and tidy up the graves. When they are done cleaning the grave, Korean pay their respect and gratitude to their ancestors by bowing. Then, incense is lit and wine or alcohol is sprinkled three times on the grave.
